Introduction and Movie Discussion Break
00:00:07
Speaker
Good morning, gents.
00:00:13
Speaker
Good morning, gents. We're back with another episode. Today is Sunday. Hoodie-hoo. Hoodie-hoo. Good morning. Good morning.
00:00:25
Speaker
We're feeling good. It's been a long week. We're all kind of burnt out, exhausted. So we wanted to have a little bit of a lighthearted episode in between this ah suicide and depression series that we're doing.
00:00:38
Speaker
So today we're just going to shoot the shit a little bit, talk about movies and the things we love about them and some of our favorites. ah But first, how are we doing today?
00:00:49
Speaker
You know what? We're doing good up here in and the great white north. That's right. It's really white. We just got about a foot of snow over the last day and it's not letting up. I feel bad for my ah friends and family downstate because they're getting a lot of ice right now. So keep them in your thoughts and prayers. a lot of power outages. But up here in northern Michigan,
Tactical Medicine Training Experience
00:01:08
Speaker
we're doing good.
00:01:08
Speaker
Brandon, I'm wondering if you've seen any wooly mammoths. Not a wooly mammoth, but I think Bigfoot sticks out back sometimes. ah What about you, Caleb? How you doing? I'm doing good, man.
00:01:19
Speaker
I'm doing good. I blew guys up with pictures over the yesterday and this morning. Took a TACMED course. Really was care under fire. So got to shoot and move, communicate, apply some nasty tourniquets, high and tight tourniquets.
00:01:37
Speaker
Got to get up there and higher. The higher, the better, dude. You get right up on the elbow. Oh, or the armpit. I got to put my knees in femoral arteries and right up in between the biceps and triceps and make make people scream as I'm putting all 195 pounds them. And then...
00:01:53
Speaker
and then i hate I had the the enjoyment of being a very, very, very combative victim.
Co-host Mac's Absence
00:02:02
Speaker
So and anybody who tried to tourniquet me, ah they got a handful.
00:02:07
Speaker
I started stripping people's kids, dude. I was throwing magazines and fucking combat shears. i was grabbing people and, like, smushing their faces. Yeah. So I had a great time.
00:02:18
Speaker
Physically a little beat up because one of the lead instructors, he's he's one of the top SWAT guys in the nation. And he he he got me as a victim and I made it rough on him.
00:02:29
Speaker
And he made it rough on me. It was about a seven-minute scramble. So I would have died for sure. i would have bled out. But it wasn't the point. I wanted him to know I wasn't a bitch.
00:02:42
Speaker
and Well, that sounds like a lot of fun. And the pictures look really good. We're ah unfortunately missing Mac again for a second consecutive week. He is UA or MIA. Work, man.
00:02:53
Speaker
He's work. Yeah, it's ah it's unfortunate, but we all understand. We love and miss you, Mac. We do love you. We miss you a little bit. But we're looking to ah looking looking to have him back for our next episode when we talk more about ah depression and
Childhood Movie Memories
00:03:10
Speaker
But for this one, it's all lighthearted and we're just kind of shooting the shit. And ah so we're going to talk about some movies because that's that's a fun topic. So first, what was the first movie you guys ever saw?
00:03:24
Speaker
And then also as a part B, what was the first r rated movie you guys ever saw? First movie i ever saw was The Lion King in theater. Hell yeah.
00:03:34
Speaker
I do remember this because I remember vaguely now as an adult, but we played the Simpsons arcade game. ah do remember that. um Honestly, i wasn't a big fan of The Lion King until I got much older.
00:03:47
Speaker
ah was more of an Aladdin fan as a kid, but my first R-rated movie I ever saw was Congo. and My parents did not know that I watched this movie, but the configuration of the house that I grew up in, my bedroom was right in line with the TV and I could lay on the floor, lay my head out behind the door jam or out in front of the door jam and had a clear view. So I would lay there and watch movies as my parents would watch whatever late at night. and that was the first time I did it. and That was the first time I saw Congo scared the living daylights out of me.
00:04:20
Speaker
congo was the the gorillas right yeah yes oh man i love that movie dude i uh oh so as a child my favorite movie it was jurassic park like the original oh yeah um like i was watching that when i was like four years old i literally destroyed the vhs i watched it so many times that and the mask i i love i love og jim gary uh i'll be the first to admit it like 90s jim carrey is where it's at i respect that i don't know what the first movie i ever saw was but yeah like all those early 90s movies jurassic park anything steven spielberg um man lion king was awesome that was my shit you see i still have my little fucking simba for one
00:05:08
Speaker
um But my earliest memory really is having the Star Wars VHS tapes and just falling in love with them instantly. And then you know my parents. Oh, yeah.
00:05:19
Speaker
No kidding. Right. Surprise. My parents bought me all the little toys and ah it was just I fell in love with it. But really, the cool thing about it was I fell in love with filmmaking because of it.
Influence of Star Wars and Favorite Movies
00:05:32
Speaker
um It wasn't just the enjoyment of watching movies. It was like the magic of how special effects are made and how you can you know get this intergalactic world out of nothing. People just are so creative at how they make this stuff. And i fell in love with George Lucas's work because of that. And it made me want to become a filmmaker. So it was really cool.
00:05:52
Speaker
um But I wanted to see what thoughts favorite movie is, or you can even give me a top three, top five, and what you, what is a movie that you hate?
00:06:05
Speaker
Okay. I'm going to have to think a little bit on the hate one. um Because it's not something I commit to memory. Like, i absolutely despise this. Because...
00:06:17
Speaker
right i'll give you a top few right jurassic park remains in my top the whole anytime a new installation of the series comes out like i don't care if it's michael bade up i know he's not part of it but like you know if it's super over the top cgi'd and ridiculous i don't care i just love the entire series so jurassic park um another favorite is um sicario absolutely love sicario have to watch that yet oh man if it's i love the first one and the second one yeah it's good um no country for old men oh yeah coen brothers man yeah hell or high water and then the the last one is is not a specific movie but it's a genre right you throw lone survivor
00:07:02
Speaker
um the Chris Kyle movie, you throw the covenant, americans anything that's, yeah. Anything that is G watt esque. Yeah. um i Well, you say that, but then, but then I see like all these horrible, horrible, cringy G watt movies on Netflix that like should not be there.
00:07:22
Speaker
I don't disagree, but what I'm saying is like your top tier GWAT-esque movies, right? you like get your yeah You're you' big ones. For non-veterans, by the way, GWAT is global war on
War Movies Discussion
00:07:32
Speaker
terror. Yep, so where we've been in, basically movies replicating our military experiences since 2001. A little outside of that, Black Hawk Down and Tears of the Sun make my top list as well. Yeah, yeah we're going to have to get into war moves because that's that's going to be a whole other debate.
00:07:50
Speaker
that Yeah, that's that's going to be so had brand movies. Oh, sorry. Movies I hate. And this is a weird caveat is I used to absolutely despise dude. Where's my car?
00:08:02
Speaker
But now but now I think it's pretty funny. um The movie i I currently right now despise is Casa de mi padre. The Will Ferrell Spanish one where he's like I'm there with you.
00:08:16
Speaker
where it's like him saying like, yo, Quito Taco Bell. And then like on the bottom, it has like a full paragraph of English title or of ah like subtitles. So like, it's like him, it's him faking speaking to Spanish, dude. And it's, it drives me up the wall. I can't stand it. That and Land of the Lost. There's a period there where Will Ferrell put
Opinion on Will Ferrell's Movies
00:08:35
Speaker
out some fucking trash and I can't stand it His new movie?
00:08:39
Speaker
His new movie with ah Little Blonde Chick. um Damn. Reese Witherspoon? His new movie with Reese Witherspoon? It's pretty good. I enjoyed it. But there was a period there where Will Ferrell's shit was just actually absolutely bad.
00:08:53
Speaker
I have to agree with you. i I know exactly that era that you're talking about. And yeah, you're fucking 100% correct. like I don't know what happened there, but that period of time was just terrible.
00:09:05
Speaker
um Go ahead, Brandon. So let's see here. One of my all time favorite movies, which is probably going to be one yours too, is Big Lebowski. Oh yeah. I can watch that one over and over again.
00:09:16
Speaker
Um, another one that I like too is, uh, Blood In Blood Out. Wow. Another one that I like too would be The Godfather. The first one. i'm not a big fan of any other one.
00:09:27
Speaker
And then i also like Apocalypse Now for a war movie. Um, and then one of my favorite, another favorite, and I'm kind of going through genres here a little bit, but, uh, It'd be like horror comedy is Tucker and Dale versus evil.
00:09:39
Speaker
Oh, I know that movie. Yeah. A movie that i I despise or dislike. I don't know. i I'd have to go through maybe some of those. like Also, I didn't care for Casa de Padre.
00:09:53
Speaker
I never saw it. I sat through it didn't like it or for it. What else? And there's so many good ones, though, too. I like Waterworld. ah but I can keep going, but let's see what yours are.
00:10:07
Speaker
All right. So a lot of people ask me this just because of you know what I'm into and what I do for a living. But I can't really nail which one is my like top number one favorite. So I kind of have like a list of five that I would say are like my favorite.
00:10:25
Speaker
So... I would say in no particular order. Saving Private Ryan, The Big Lebowski, um The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. yeah ah Star Wars.
00:10:36
Speaker
And that's mainly including the original trilogy. um If I had to choose one out of all of them, it would be Empire Strikes Back. And i would say I'll throw in a comedy and I'll say Superbad.
00:10:48
Speaker
thought, dude, Superbad was... You know, I miss, like, the 2000s comedies. Dude. Early 2000s. Unrivaled. It's crazy how long ago that movie came out, too.
00:10:59
Speaker
I know. Or... Dude, along the lines of Superbad, like, the movie of, like, my, like... teenage youth is a like American Pie. and Oh, yeah.
00:11:10
Speaker
Love those movies, dude. all All those like early 2000s or late 1990s comedies. Teen drama comedies. ex Excellent. Yeah.
00:11:20
Speaker
All right. so Supposedly there's a new American Pie installment. heard that. It's American Funeral. Yeah, it's the death of Stiffler's Mom. Yeah. Oh God, it's going to hit me in my feels. I know. I can't wait. All right.
Theater vs. Streaming Debate
00:11:38
Speaker
So first, is there any movie coming out that you guys are like super excited to see? Death of Sifflers, mom. like Okay, anything else than what we just told you? So I think that's ah that's a good question.
00:11:52
Speaker
Because we've hit this weird period where people have ditched cable and gone to streaming services. yeah So you don't get as many movie posters or commercials or advertisements of like, hey, this is what's coming out, right? Like, I remember growing up, like,
00:12:07
Speaker
Dude, you saw a commercial, like you wanted to be in the theater to see that. Nowadays, like you only see the commercials that are on your streaming services and then... from there, like that, that's what you get. Like maybe some Facebook ads or something like like that. But like, i don't know. I, that I couldn't tell you what's coming out. You know I mean? It's so, depressing to me because obviously as a filmmaker, like my dream is to see my movies in the theater and it's, it's a magical experience to go to a movie theater and watch a movie.
00:12:35
Speaker
And you just don't get that nowadays. Like we're not, we're not encouraging it enough and they're not doing enough to draw people into the theater. And even if they do, it's a very limited theatrical release, and then they instantly shit it out on all the ah streaming services.
00:12:53
Speaker
So anytime I get to actually go see a movie in theaters and, like, it's actually, you know, worth your time, like, it it's like a magical experience for me, and I couldn't recommend it enough, but...
A24 Films and Filmmaker Empowerment
00:13:03
Speaker
i I want to see warfare.
00:13:05
Speaker
Yes, dude. A24 movies, first off, are like, if I ever make it in Hollywood, I want to fucking make movies for A24. They shit out some amazing movies. And those filmmakers, they they actually give a lot of power to the filmmakers in creating like their vision.
00:13:22
Speaker
So warfare is created by an Iraq war veteran. And he is telling ah his direct experience and it looks incredible. And i am absolutely excited to see that movie.
00:13:36
Speaker
Oh, yes, I agree with that. The trailers looked awesome. Oh, dude, they look sick. Honestly, movies of late, though, just have not piqued my interest. Yeah, a lot a lot of them have not.
00:13:47
Speaker
um You know, we're in this age, not only of the the streaming services, which we'll get into, but i I hate the the studio system is robbing filmmakers of creativity and it's not giving the filmmakers the power and they only care about money.
00:14:07
Speaker
They're focusing on how to make a quick buck. We look at Disney. for example, with they have unlimited resources and they can make anything they fucking want.
00:14:18
Speaker
Yet they're shitting out these soulless cash grab remakes of beloved films. Oh, I know. Devoid of life like Snow White just came out and it's got like a one star rating out of 10 and people are absolutely destroying It'd be Dragon Ball Annihilation.
00:14:37
Speaker
Dragon Ball Evolution for evolution yeah has a higher rating than that. And that was one of the worst movies of all time. So it's just like, it's fucking sad that they're not giving filmmakers the freedom to do what they can with their talents and just like let them do their thing. That's why that's why the seventy s was the golden era of filmmaking.
00:14:59
Speaker
And we started with the rise of, you know, the blockbusters in ah with Jaws in 1975. Because they the the studios just let these kids out of fucking film school do whatever the fuck they wanted, basically.
00:15:12
Speaker
Dude, I'm not going to lie. like I like Sam Remy, the Evil Dead, man. but i know the The Evil Dead films are great, too. Oh, yeah, lot you're onto something there, dude. The early eighty s into the 90s. Man, it was a great time for movies.
00:15:28
Speaker
You know, I kind of feel nostalgic here. I always miss coming soon to VHS, you know? like Absolutely. I am... yeah i I love the remake scene for the fact that wherever we are with technology and ability, that if ah afraid of creative creative freedom was ah was allotted, wicked they could crush it.
00:15:51
Speaker
They could absolutely crush it, right? Like, there's such good stories that could be remade even better, but nobody wants to allow it. Yeah, there's a select few filmmakers who are taking old ideas or films and reworking them.
00:16:10
Speaker
um Like, look at the remake of Nosferatu. Robert Eggers, who also does films for eight twenty four like fantastic filmmaker and that guy has so much talent but we we need more of that like if you're if you're gonna pay homage or like do something new to an old idea like you have to really like pay respect to it but have the creative freedom to do what you need to do. And like the studios just don't allow that anymore. Like it's very rare.
00:16:41
Speaker
So it's depressing for me as like a filmmaker and trying to, you know, make it through Hollywood. That's like independent film is where it's at when it comes to being able to do what you want to do.
00:16:52
Speaker
And there is one positive though, like this, ah this film that won Best Picture was basically an independent film and they won a shit ton of awards. um So and all their speeches like they just praised independent film and encouraged it and said like this is what we need more of.
00:17:11
Speaker
So that there is some signs of hope. um I'm hoping with these sudden losses in revenue Disney finally wakes the fuck up and is like maybe we got to stop this fucking garbage.
Critique of Disney and Movie Remakes
00:17:22
Speaker
This drivel that we're we're releasing and the other studios will follow suit. It'd be nice. i feel like we're I feel like we're living out an episode of South Park right now where they're trying the boys are trying to steal the Indiana Jones. and No, they're trying to steal the Indiana Jones originals and the Star Wars originals so they don't remake them or they don't take stuff out of them. like We're trying to save good film here, folks.
00:17:46
Speaker
Yeah. all right. How was, did you watch Nosferatu? I did. And it was, it was kind of like mixed reviews. I really liked it. I think you kind of have to love horror gothic films to ah like fully appreciate it.
00:18:02
Speaker
It is a very artistic film to say the least. There are some things that could be considered like really funny in it, but you just have to appreciate them for what they are. It's a strange film, but it's filmed so well.
00:18:15
Speaker
The original is strange. The original is a strange film. I haven't watched it. I heard, yeah, I haven't watched it. I heard good things, though. And i almost watched it on the airplane now. Yeah. um All right.
00:18:26
Speaker
If you had to make a list of the best war film, you get, I'll say, five to ten slots. What do you choosing? I'll say five. Five slots.
00:18:37
Speaker
Five. Black Hawk Down. Okay. Black Hawk Down. All Quiet on the Western Front. Which one? one Okay. The newer one. Yeah. The one that just dropped, right? That shit was so good.
00:18:49
Speaker
um I'm a sucker for 13 hours of Benghazi, but that's that's like personal bias because I have a deployment related to it, right? Like it's...
00:19:00
Speaker
um Oh, man. um What's the one? It's a World War Two movie. More recent. um nineteen seventeen 1917. That was World War One.
00:19:12
Speaker
World War One. That's the way that's the one where he's running the message independently. Yes. Yes. Yeah. 1917. Yeah. nineteen seventeen um and then this one's gonna be funny it's not that i'll save it as my token six um saving private ryan but my token six my token six is full metal jacket oh okay there's nothing wrong it's not it's it doesn't really fit the war category though it takes place in like i don't make it a war movie like there's very little combat in it yeah but it's it still counts
00:19:44
Speaker
Does it? It does. Yeah. Okay. All right. That's my token six. All good. But you got to think about this, Caleb. All good war movies are just a character story.
00:19:56
Speaker
Yeah, that's true. And that's what Full Metal Jacket really is. Oh, yeah, that's true. That's true. That's I mean, that's that's straight up character story, like straight beginning to end character story. Yeah.
00:20:07
Speaker
The war is the bad drop. I hate that you gave me five, dude. Hurt Locker, Shawhead, God, oh! Hurt Locker is so overrated. Fuck, don't get me started on ka Catherine Bigelow's fucking hey best picture. the army now, Pauly Shore. I was gonna say that one.
00:20:26
Speaker
The Glendale Waterboys. If you want to go 10, we can go 10. No, bro. 5 is good. 5 is good because i that there's honestly โ it's probably the one category that gets the most um the most deliberate action from, I think, the studios as to trying to do them right because they know that they can they can make an ass load of money, and but they also know that if if they do it poorly โ it will get terrible fallback like fallout right like you do a war movie bad and like people talk yeah so my five these may catch you off guard but i'll start with the first one that's going to be torah torah torah nice i love it um i do like um last samurai yeah um we were soldiers no nice stripes and uh you know i
00:21:17
Speaker
what You're funny. You're funny, dude. I love how as soon as like you're about to go, i'm just like, his answers are going to be so far out there.
00:21:31
Speaker
man. But then, like, I don't know. I do like the first blood. don't know. Because it's, I mean, it's not really war, but it's focused around the
Favorite War Movies
00:21:41
Speaker
veterans. Rambo? Yeah. Yeah. Rambo, first blood. very first first Rambo movie. Yeah.
00:21:47
Speaker
I was trying to think of another one. of All right. I'll take that. take that You'll take that five? What about you? all right. So obviously, same private Ryan's on the list.
00:21:58
Speaker
I would consider that the best war film of all time. Here's my little debacle here. Do we consider miniseries like Band of Brothers in the Pacific as ah film or are they just TV?
00:22:10
Speaker
Like they were off of you that they were they were on TV, but like they're they're basically fucking a big film. It's a 10 hour movie. Yeah. Yeah. I think those series, Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Generation Kill. Yes. I would include because they're done by studios like HBO and not done by like a Netflix. like Exactly.
00:22:32
Speaker
So I'm good with that. Oh, by the way, though, since we're on this topic with I would i would loop those three in there. um I don't know if you guys saw Masters of the Air, which was made by the producers of Band of Brothers and the Pacific. But it fucking I I hated it.
00:22:49
Speaker
I thought it sucked. It was such a letdown. um All right. Let's see what else I would say. The deer hunter. Oh, baby. Oh, yeah. Great film.
00:23:00
Speaker
Yep. Russian roulette scene. Classic. like
00:23:05
Speaker
um if i had to include a global war on terrorism film i would probably say lone survivor i love that movie it was done so well um it's very rewatchable i think that the scene with them just like uh where they're just about to get into the firefight and then everything up to like when they're falling down the mountain it's just fucking done so well it's just so incredible It's probably the first or like one of the best scene or like pre firefight through duration like that. That entire scene is like 15 to 17 minutes long. It's long, long scene.
00:23:46
Speaker
Like when he clicks the safety off right when the first like that. Well, first of all, like the little Afghani kid like jumps and takes off running. yep And it's from there. Until like he passes out till he's till he goes into the water and then goes and wakes up like, yeah, afterward.
00:24:03
Speaker
It's a long scene. It's so long, but like it's one continuous combat scene, which is amazing. And you don't see that in very many films at all, like if any.
00:24:14
Speaker
yeah i don't know so i i'm with you that's that's an amazing yeah and uh i just like how real it was like they used real stump people when they were falling down the mountain and you could just feel the pain as they're just tumbling and breaking their fucking bones like oh my god it just hurts to watch but i love the quote right as they're about to get the firefight he's like i think it's about to time to to punch that time card Right as he's aimed sights on this dude's head, like, oh, gives me goosebumps every time.
00:24:45
Speaker
um If I had to give one more, i would probably say Platoon. ah do Great movie. I love Willem Dafoe in that movie. Willem Dafoe, dude. I mean, just amazing actor in general, but he really was a bright spot in that movie.
00:25:00
Speaker
There's so many actors who started their careers with that movie, too. You got Kevin Dillon from Entourage, ah Johnny Depp, Forrest Whitaker, bunch of other people.
00:25:11
Speaker
But that's a great one. Honestly, Platoon, Band of Brothers, St. Private Ryan all used Dale Dye as a military advisor, and he really is the the A standard for...
00:25:26
Speaker
wartime, like war film accuracy. um You know, the guy was a Marine Corps veteran himself in Vietnam, and he got into the business in film and is, you know, this amazing military advisor. And he's the gold standard. Like, you watch all these inaccurate films that don't do any homework on the the fucking topic that they're doing.
00:25:48
Speaker
And, you know, any kind of veteran will watch these shit war movies and just pick out all the inaccuracies. And it's like, it makes you not want to even watch them. But his movies, like, you know that they're done with this realistic approach.
00:26:01
Speaker
And, you know, when I filmed my war movie, I was like, I want the Dale Dye approach. I want to do as much homework as possible and get this right because these guys deserve it. And this story deserves it.
00:26:12
Speaker
the hug was good thanks dude not not fanboying over you here buddy but but you wanna you wanna talk about ah cast go look at the cast of Black Hawk Down Black Hawk Down had a great cast, dude.
00:26:25
Speaker
Orlando Bloom. Josh Harnett, Eric Bana, Ewan McGregor, Tom Hardy, Tom Sizemore, Orlando Bloom, William Fitchner, Jason Isaacs.
00:26:36
Speaker
Like, um the dude that plays in Game of Thrones. Also in Shop Caller. Also in Shock Color. Yeah. Nicolaj Coster-Walloo or whatever. Yeah.
00:26:47
Speaker
He played Jamie Lannister. Dude, it had Kim Coates. had um Richard Tyson. ah Who else? I'm looking. time Ty Burrell was the medic inside the helicopter. He becomes it on Modern Family. Yeah. dump Dumpy. Like, what? Yeah.
00:27:08
Speaker
Great cast. I would say the only thing that rivals Black Hawk Down's cast is Band of Brothers cast. Yes. Oh, yeah. um And Saving Private Ryan. Go back and watch Saving Private Ryan. Dude, you've got a sneaky... So you stole many people.
00:27:23
Speaker
You've got some sneaky people in there that blow up to superstars later on. Yes. like Yes, you do. Yeah. Great, great cast. um Okay. I've got a weird hot take that I want to pivot on. Is Forrest Gump a war movie? Oh, shit.
00:27:37
Speaker
yeah I would say no. um Okay. I think so. this This is kind of like the the debate of is is a Christmas movie a Christmas movie if it doesn't really... What makes a Christmas movie a Christmas movie, right?
00:27:53
Speaker
Because like Forrest Gump has war in it, but is it about Christmas? Like, is is it fully centered around Christmas or is it just like ah simple backdrop?
00:28:05
Speaker
So are you in the Die Hard is not a Christmas movie? No, I do consider it a Christmas movie, but but. but Forrest Gump, the war scene is so if if the whole movie essentially was like in Vietnam and it was just him on his crazy hijinks. Yes, I would consider it a war movie, but it's such a small moment of the film.
00:28:25
Speaker

Romance and Rom-Com Favorites
00:29:42
Speaker
had Rom-com or like straight romance? It can be either rom-com, romance, and whatever. Pretty Woman. See, dude, Pretty Woman's not bad.
00:29:53
Speaker
i I like Pretty Woman. Pretty Woman's good. um I mean, American Pie fits rom-com. Yes, technically there is. At least the first one. But it's not really like It's more comedy.
00:30:06
Speaker
Yeah. It's more comedy. um I'm a sucker. I'm going to kick it back to the like 90s and 80s. Like you can't buy me love with Patrick Dempsey. um Dirty dancing. whos rush in i'm not a I'm not a huge dirty dancing. Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Yeah.
00:30:22
Speaker
Fast Times at Ridgemont High, i would I would consider a rom-com of its day. And that's, dude, I love i love Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Yeah. um Oh, man. Oh, man. I'm about to get judged so hard. Yeah. try me brother uh i'm a sucker for the original twisters movie and there's a romance level to it and i am a slut for the new twisters movie and there's some romance to that as well oh yeah for sure i mean shoot man my mom was always watching like romance movies dude so like
00:30:56
Speaker
Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride. um What else is there? dude that's Julia Roberts all over it. She was a Hallmark girl too. so its like Always Hallmark movies on, man. I don't even know the names of them. they're just all Of course you don't because they're fucking...
00:31:13
Speaker
They're nothing. They're all the same movie. it's It's literally all the same plot. Guy finds girl, finds guy. guy i I love shamelessly watching Hallmark movies, but like just making fun of them.
00:31:24
Speaker
and Dude, if I was to get into Hallmark movies, I would make so much money. It's sad that I don't just like pursue that because it it's such it's such an easy venture. um i guess I'm about to be shamed here.
00:31:36
Speaker
Would True Lies be considered a romance movie? Yeah, with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Arnold. Maybe. Not really. ah Hey, A Star is Born and was really good.
00:31:48
Speaker
That counts. I enjoyed that. That's a good movie. yeah that's good Which one, though? Because it's that that movie has like six variations. Dude, you know me. I'm i'm a a modern person. Bradley Cooper. so bradley cooper yeah Absolutely.
00:32:02
Speaker
All right. I'm about to get shamed here. I would say i do love Dirty Dancing. And honestly, I also love The Notebook. I was just about to say. And my wife's favorite is Sweet Home Alabama.
00:32:16
Speaker
Oh, dude, i watch Sweet Home anytime it's on. Anytime it's on. Bro, I'm ah i'm ah all for that.
00:32:24
Speaker
It's a good one. Dude, you got like Sleepless in Seattle. There's so many good ones, dude. All right, I got a good topic
Is Rose from Titanic a Villain?
00:32:30
Speaker
here. Is Rose the true villain of Titanic?
00:32:34
Speaker
yeah but um Yes. Yeah, I don't like Rose. That bitch. That bitch. Now that I'm an adult. First off, old bitch goes her whole life without telling people shit.
00:32:48
Speaker
Hides the fucking, the diamond. the the The fucking diamond of the ocean. This whole time, this dude is, dedicates his life to finding this She comes in contact with them, goes along on this little adventure, tells her whole life story.
00:33:03
Speaker
She met this homeless dude on a boat, slept with him one time, leaves her husband, steals the diamond, lets the homeless dude die, makes it back. There was room on that raft. There was enough room on the door.
00:33:16
Speaker
And if you want to argue buoyancy, well, they could fucking take turns. They could make a life raft out of some bodies. They could do something. She lets him die. She makes it back. And then bitch throws the diamond in the fucking ocean and then dies in her sleep.
00:33:33
Speaker
Doesn't fucking let the guy have the diamond who's been searched for it his whole life. She dies and then goes and dances with the fucking ghosts. Like... i I hate her.
00:33:45
Speaker
I hate her. She's evil, dude. We have not touched on... So we went romance and war, but we haven't touched on one that blends the lines. oh Pearl Harbor.
00:34:00
Speaker
Oh, boy. That one is... All right, listen. So Pearl Harbor is ah decent movie. I like... I think Michael Bay is an okay director if it's just a popcorn flick you're looking for.
00:34:15
Speaker
He's not the pinnacle of a war. Like, he's not who I would consider a great war filmmaker. He has done, like, 13 hours in Benghazi. He actually did a really good job with that.
00:34:28
Speaker
I was kind of surprised. um Pearl Harbor is not very historically accurate with most of the film and its portrayal. But as a romance film, it was pretty good.
00:34:40
Speaker
What do you think? Yeah, definitely a romance. It's it's it was more romance. I mean, yeah, there's a pretty cool like there's the raid on Pearl Harbor scene. And, you know, he Josh Harnett flies to go bomb in retaliation and crashes out.
00:34:56
Speaker
ah Yeah. I mean, there's some there's some scenes there, but that that movie was about the book about the girl. I will say as a kid or like a a young boy growing up, I enjoyed watching it more than I enjoy it.
00:35:09
Speaker
Like it was a good film as a kid. Same thing with like, have you ever seen fucking Windtalkers? Yes. That movie sucks. Dude. do Oh my god. It is terrible. Go back and rewatch that movie. It is, I believe, who is it? John Woo who made it, right?
00:35:29
Speaker
I believe so, yes. Yeah. That movie is ridiculous. Fucking Nicolas Cage running around with a Tommy gun with infinite ammo, and he single-handedly wins World War two And there's so many like insane explosions just going off, like Japanese getting blown up left and right. Okay, okay so now I'm going to blend the lines again
Review of 'Enemy at the Gates'
00:35:50
Speaker
Cool. Enemy at the Gate. Love Enemy at the Gates. Not very historically accurate with a lot of it, but great fucking movie. I love it.
00:36:02
Speaker
Yeah. Vasily Saitsev is a badass and Rachel Weisz is so hot. ah dude, i love The Mummy. And I love how they basically took that movie, the Stalingrad, like, intro, and remade it into ah Metal... or was No, Call a Duty Finest Hour for PS2 when it first came out.
00:36:21
Speaker
Like, way back in... What was it? 2003? Awesome game. um So, getting into, like, the whole street shit. um Happy Gilmore 2 is coming in. Oh, dude, i'm I'm ready for it.
00:36:33
Speaker
I know it's probably not going to be that great, but... as As a 90s kid, it is my obligated civic duty to watch this movie and semi-enjoy it. I agree.
00:36:45
Speaker
i fucking love Adam Sandler movies, especially, you know, the early ones, Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore. Big Daddy. What wedding singer? All those. Oh, God.
00:36:55
Speaker
Yes. He met his wife on. that But and he puts her in every film since I just love him. He's such a down to earth dude. But Happy Gilmore is my favorite of his movies. And I'm just praying, praying to God it doesn't suck.
00:37:10
Speaker
Like, don't don't make us wait 30 plus years and then it just be horrible. You know, for a flop. Have you seen have you seen Uncut Gems? Uncut Gems was awesome.
00:37:20
Speaker
Yeah, dude, seeing him in that role was crazy. yeah Yeah. He really can do dramas really well. Oh, yeah. So we doing another genre here or what? What do you got? You got anything?
00:37:33
Speaker
Go ahead. You guys are free to chime in here. i don't have to lead this whole time. I was going to ask... Are you the kind of person that only watches movies for plot and substance? Or are you okay with a popcorn film?
00:37:44
Speaker
Right? Like, Oh no, I'm good with popcorn flicks. Oh yeah. Same here. So that, that's, that's kind of like my pet peeve is like, people are like, that
Fast & Furious Franchise Criticism
00:37:51
Speaker
movie's trash. I'm like, okay, what did you expect? It's transformers 14 made by Michael Bay. like You don't go for the, you don't go for the plot. You don't go see fast nine for the plot. You go see it for CGI and ridiculousness entertainment value. i I am pretty let down, honestly, about, like, the Fast Vs and what they turned into. Like, everything after Fast Five, I just didn't give a fucking rat's ass about. Like, I love the original Fast and the Furious. Like, me and my brother can quote verbatim the entire movie, and they they just became so unrealistic and outrageous that it's like,
00:38:27
Speaker
they're they're basically superheroes now yeah that's yeah it's not that's not what the the vision was and i'm like if they're so there's this popular thing online now that it's like they want jurassic world and uh the fast movies to like make a crossover film vin diesel's like out running a fucking t-rex in a car like a dodge charger oh my gosh I don't got dinosaurs. I got family. God damn it.
00:38:57
Speaker
The original is so good, dude. It's so good. Oh, it's the best. But it's it's also super inaccurate. Like, gearheads hate it because of, like, the original, like, the the first street race scene where, like, it's got, like, pressure in the manifold across his computer and then the floorboard falls out of the car. Like, what the fuck? How does that have anything to do with the manifold? less Exactly. exactly It's just like spitting washers from underneath screw the dash. Screw the gearheads. As a kid, I was obsessed.
00:39:24
Speaker
No, so was I. I love it. I love it. i I honestly don't care for Too Fast, Too Furious that much. like the time I like it. It's just more of comical. It's a buddy comedy.
00:39:37
Speaker
And Ava Mendez. Ava Mendez. And Cole Hauser, dude. That's Miami Vice Cole Hauser. Ejecto-cito, cuz. Cuz. But yeah. aya I liked Tokyo Drift because it had a ton of car scenes in it versus bullshit
Impact of 'Friday Night Lights'
00:39:57
Speaker
I agree. I was going to say Tokyo Drift. Oh, man. we went with We went with top movies, bro. Didn't we? We addressed top movies. Oh, yeah. I fucked up.
00:40:08
Speaker
we i didn't know why Friday Night Lights, the the movie is in my top 1000%. one thousand percent Like i was playing high school football, like playing in the playoffs when that movie came. like around that genre like or that time period.
00:40:22
Speaker
I actually missed one. Go ahead. yes That's what we're here for the The Shawshank Redemption. Oh, oh, oh, it's perfect it's a perfect film. It is a perfect film.
00:40:33

I don't know. I can't pin it down, dude. he's He's got good stuff in the olden days. And even some of his newer stuff, not newer, but like he does a really good job in the Sonic series.
00:42:53
Speaker
Like I watch him with my kids and like Jim Carrey is killing, i mean killing the game as a Sonicer. But then, like, you watch The Grinch at Christmastime, like, Jim Carrey's Grinch. Like, dude, he crushed that. oh Like, I know he's in makeup, but, like, like no there's very few people can put in that suit and, like, actually portray The Grinch.
00:43:13
Speaker
Did you ever see that picture online of um Jim Carrey as The Grinch standing next to the Nutty Professor because they were both on the film lot filming their movies at the same time, so they took a photo together?
00:43:28
Speaker
You gotta look that up. It's hilarious. But did you know that the director of Liar Liar and um Bruce Almighty and all those early like earlier Jim Carrey movies um absolutely loves me?
00:43:44
Speaker
Really? He loves you. So when I interned out in Hollywood, he was making a movie with the film ah production company that I was working for. And they were doing all of the post-production work on the film.
00:43:57
Speaker
So he brought me in and showed me his editing process with his editor. And we were just shooting the shit. And he was just the nicest guy, Tom Shadyak.
00:44:08
Speaker
And He was like praising me for like my physical fitness. He's like, how many pull-ups can you do? And he just started asking me to do pull-ups in front of him. He's like, dude, you're so talented. He's like, want to go for want to go for a bike ride with me? Let's go hang out. Like he was just so down to earth.
00:44:23
Speaker
Awesome guy. But it was really cool. the jim A Jim Carrey movie my wife and I liked was I Love You, Philip Morris. don't know if you ever watched that one. I have watched it. It was weird, but we just liked it together.
00:44:37
Speaker
um Me, myself, and Irene. Oh, dude. Dude, the cow scene gets me every time. it Every time. I love the diner scene when the kid's looking.
00:44:48
Speaker
He just lays into that little kid. Ace Ventura, another Tom Shadiac movie. Oh, God. So was he on like with like Earth Girls Are Easy and Once Bitten? or I don't know.
00:44:59

00:45:03
Speaker
Oh, dude. I'm not into the genre that much, man. No? I can't really speak to it. Dude. I'll tell you, I like i like slasher films, but then like I like the remake of It, and that's man that's about it.
00:45:13

Dude, I'm a... b-rate horror man like there's a movie that my wife and i watched it was called monster man it was it was so dumb all i remember there's rosebud he's like driving by this girl who's really hot yells it out the window then like they're just getting slashed to pieces i mean but horror i love horror i love the horror genre you know like old frankenstein boris carloff yeah freaking dracula Oh, man.
00:45:42

Horror Movie Night Enjoyment
00:45:59
Speaker
And we're always trying to find like new ones coming out. And it's just so fun just like getting into this genre. I mean, obviously, there's a bunch that I've seen before, but we're getting into like new shit.
00:46:10
Speaker
And I love I just love like the thrillers, the shit that makes you think. Did you guys see the new movie Heretic? No, it was really good. You got to see it. It's not really a horror. It's more like a thriller, but it's on HBO. You should definitely watch it.
00:46:24
Speaker
OK, so ela you guys were part of my worst experience with a horror movie ever. the one we made no what no what we were on one of the pre-work cycles on the ship and we were sitting in that stupid office that was way past the tack log and it was like that little hangout room we had oh yeah the supply room i don't know or like the whole it was the office the one where i fell asleep on all the chairs Yes, that one that was deep.
00:46:51
Speaker
Like you would pass the tack log up and you'd have to hang a left down a hallway and you'd come down. Yeah, yeah, yeah. The office. Yeah. So we were in there and we watched The Conjuring. it was i remember this.
00:47:02
Speaker
It was after dark, bro. So the entire hallway was illuminated with the red lights. Yeah. And it was late as fuck. So there was nobody. And I had to get back to the rack, dude. I was running. Yeah.
00:47:14
Speaker
Jumping, jumping through that to the knee knockers. Dude, I was hurtling through the knee knockers. And you're so tall. You're probably like bumping your head and shit. Hey, I had to like bring my head down and my feet up. It was like it was like watching Mario in real life. Oh, That's good.
00:47:35
Speaker
i was like, ah, dude, I'm going to die. Yeah. and since I think the the last last like series horror series that I watched with when I was on EMS to my paramedic I used to work with him and I would watch horror movies together was hatchet the Victor Crowley stories.
00:47:53
Speaker
never saw it dude. It's B right. It's not great but it'll pass the time dude and we just had fun doing it. No I love fucking B movies. They're so fun to make fun of.
