Weather Talk

00:00:04
Speaker
Well hello and welcome to this week's episode of the Purple Door Podcast, a Friends Rewatch Pod. I'm one of your hosts, Alistair, alongside, as always, Deanne. Deanne, how are you today?
00:00:16
Speaker
I'm a awesome, Al. Woo, woo, It's been a yeah great day. It has. i have no idea when this episode comes out, but the weather was so nice today. And ah it felt like spring.
00:00:29
Speaker
And yeah it's not going to stay that way. But yeah I don't know. It sure was nice. That's right. Next, this this episode, we're recording a little in advance. This comes out a week on Thursday.
00:00:42
Speaker
And next weekend, I think it's meant to be really cold. Possibility. Really cold for us. um yeah Below freezing most of the time. Possibility of snow flurries and such.
00:00:54
Speaker
I read. that we'll see. See what happens. We'll see. Because I'll tell you, my parents were on a trip to Waco and they weren't supposed to come back until today. And um they came back yesterday because they were so they had gotten an alert on their phone that we were going to have snow flurries last night.
00:01:13
Speaker
Right. And they didn't want to drive in that. Right. Yes. But then we they ah they came over today for a little bit and we were outside talking in the beautiful weather. And my mom's like, yeah, it didn't snow at my house. Well, they live literally two minutes away from us. And I'm like, I was like, yeah, we got a little bit of snow here.
00:01:37
Speaker
i know But no. it's But no. no. whenever I went out and spent most of the morning inside puttering about, but went out for a nice walk this afternoon. Just glorious weather.
00:01:50
Speaker
Yes, yes, yes, yes. Yes, absolutely. Well, let's see.

Introduction of Bamboozled Quiz Format

00:01:55
Speaker
This week the one with the football. And if you didn't listen to last week's episode, first of all, why not? But second of all, you may not know, we have changed the format of Bamboozled and we're now doing five questions each. We are keeping score and we are going to compete season by season for the Geller Cup.
00:02:14
Speaker
Very appropriate for this episode. Yes, yes. Seriously, like how random was that? That that just randomly popped up and everything. And then today we're recording this episode. Meant to be.
00:02:29
Speaker
Obviously. is So, yes, we're going to, well, we, your good husband, is going to help assemble a Geller Cup. It will go back and forth between our houses each season.
00:02:42
Speaker
And I'm excited. This brings a nice little wrinkle to Bamboozled. Yes, it surely does. See, and then, but now I feel like, yes, we are all about the integrity over here at the Purple Door podcast. And so I'm not going to look at my notes.
00:02:59
Speaker
This is going to be straight from memory. But then I got nervous that maybe I was making my questions too hard. Right. So i don't know. if If Kate said it's all good, kate is kate is like the commissioner. She is the bamboozled commissioner. She makes sure that we are being fair.
00:03:20
Speaker
Indeed. She reviews both sets of questions, makes sure there's no duplicates. And also she's just casting an eye over how difficult they are And she felt that some of yours were tricky, but then so were some of mine.
00:03:33
Speaker
so Done! all right we will see we will see i'm sure that um yes she's she's quite she shows a great deal of integrity too so she does i think it's going to be all fair here let's say you started last time i believe yes i sure did so now it's your turn so now it's my turn well i'm going to open up with a a question that does require three answers No.

Chandler's Comedic Goals

00:04:02
Speaker
Yes. Okay.
00:04:03
Speaker
I do feel a little unsure whether if you get two out of three, if we should if you should get the points, should that be the rule? I don't really know. Okay. Well, let's just go and we'll figure it out. I like it. All right. My question for you is what are Chandler's three goals now that he and Janice have broken up?
00:04:23
Speaker
He's going to do three things. Oh, my God. And it's whenever he's sitting there and he's looking all sad and out. um was he
00:04:37
Speaker
and it's like loser-y things it is and this is why i think getting two out of three is a is a good thing because getting three is quite tricky golly and he says i want to come ah like come and get fresh air Yep, it's during that conversation.
00:04:57
Speaker
Oh my gosh. Al, is it like eat more, do less, breathe less?
00:05:08
Speaker
it's It is it' just not its is not. It's a little more specific. ah Mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm.
00:05:22
Speaker
not we're starting off tough is it about no kidding goodness
00:05:31
Speaker
hang on yeah okay he's gonna i ah yes do do do dos right doo do is he gonna drink more that is what you've got one of the three yes great okay we're gonna go with oh my god and he's
00:05:53
Speaker
Sleep more? no no. No, okay. I have no idea, Al. All right. He's going drink in the morning. He's going to wear his bathrobe all day. hi yes.
00:06:05
Speaker
And then eat peanut clusters. Nice. Okay, great. Great. Yeah. No, that was hard. No, us we start off with the tricky one. Okay. Then I'm going to ask you one that has three parts. I like it.
00:06:19
Speaker
What do losers do?
00:06:24
Speaker
Wow. Okay. Just like you, i can remember where that was. What do losers do?
00:06:35
Speaker
Losers. You know, I'm not going to get it. I've got nothing, even though I can kind of get that you a hint. I'll give you a hint. Okay.
00:06:47
Speaker
Monica says something. Ross says something. Chandler says something.
00:06:55
Speaker
Right. Oh, I can picture the scene. It's, oh, losers talk. Oh, losers walk, losers talk. And then Chandler says losers.
00:07:09
Speaker
No, i do I don't have it. I don't have it. I don't, i I'm not going to get the point, even if I've got two, because you give me. Dang! Oh, it's though. Losers rhyme.
00:07:21
Speaker
should have got it. That was so funny. Oh, that's right. i was and I even said the rhyming words. All right. So we're not off to a great start here. No, but that's okay.
00:07:36
Speaker
All right. My question for you, my second one is, in what Geller Bowl did Monica break Ross's nose? Was it 85? 85? It is not 85. You know what? That could have been the year.
00:07:50
Speaker
Okay. but it is It's a number. you know It's like you know Super Bowl II, Super Bowl XXV. It is a number. 14? It's Geller Bowl VI. It's Geller Bowl VI. Okay. All right.
00:08:05
Speaker
All right. We're not off to strong start. We are not. All right. So in the Thanksgiving Day football game on the TV... Who's playing? Okay. Do you know both the teams or one?
00:08:22
Speaker
Both the teams. I know one and I think I know the other. it's The Giants.
00:08:32
Speaker
Are they playing the Vikings? No. oh They're playing the Bills. The Bills. And I can tell you, like, Ross is drinking from a Bills mug.
00:08:46
Speaker
And so you've got, yeah So anyway, yes. But it's the Bills and the Giants. Bills is it. Ah, so, all right. We are 0 for 4 between us. But this, this is where you're going to get, you're going to points on the board. I'm feeling it.
00:09:03
Speaker
And it's another three-parter. Oh, gosh. Yeah. Again, i think two out of three will get it. When when they're playing football, all of the girls' shirts say something different. Can you tell me what their shirts play?
00:09:17
Speaker
Yeah, I sure can. I sure can. Okay, Rachel's is green. Yep. And it says something boxing. and it's got like the boxing And it's got the boxing hanging down.
00:09:31
Speaker
Yes, it says girls boxing. You get that one. Okay. And then Phoebe's shirt has Mary Tyler Moore and it says that girl. Wow, I had no idea that was Mary Tyler Moore, but knew it said that girl.
00:09:43
Speaker
Okay. And then um Monica is wearing a giant sweatshirt. matt You are off the mark. Look at you go. All right, let's see if I can keep pace with you. What have you got for me?
00:09:58
Speaker
All right.

Geller Cup History

00:10:00
Speaker
How many years has it been since Monica and Ross last played for the Geller Cup? ah Yeah, I don't know. so I'm going to have to make an educated guess at.
00:10:15
Speaker
Oh, no. All right. So I'm going to guess they were young, you know, young te teenagers. I'm going to go 12 years. That would be a correct, very good thing to go with. Nice job. Nice job.
00:10:31
Speaker
That was not me playing coy. I really didn't know. It was like it seems like a reasonable number. All right. I love that we both have dogs in the background because mine are driving me nuts over here. Yeah. Bellatrix just walked in. She said hello. And my two have decided to wrestle on the ground beside my feet. Great. Excellent. All right. My fourth question for you is, can you complete this line? 42 21 points.
00:10:59
Speaker
And you don't have to get it one for one. 42 21. Ross. Oh, God dang. I even typed it out because I knew that that was so funny to me. Ross is going to lose
00:11:20
Speaker
something. And then he says about ah being a compulsive eater. Yeah, like cheater, cheater, compulsive eater or something. Yeah, that's exactly what he says. 42 to 21, Ross is... Oh, my God. oh
00:11:43
Speaker
I mean, you you already know this, but you're in the right area. but
00:11:51
Speaker
Now, I'll give a small hint. This is a Thanksgiving episode and and there's a... Oh, like buses yeah the Ross, wait. 42 to 21, like the turkey, Ross is done. Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. Dang, but you gave me hint. No, I think it's I gave you a very small hint. You get that point. Small hint. I don't know how I feel about that.
00:12:17
Speaker
Well, let's see if it ends up being important or not. like Oh, okay. yeah all right How many questions do we have left? ah You need to give me two. You've had four and you got two, right? I've had three and I've got one. So you need to give me another one. And then it's one more each.
00:12:35
Speaker
Okay. All right. What is the woman in the window doing? Like, there's the woman in the window? Yes. So, what I noticed was at one point she was watching the game, but then she was on the phone.
00:12:51
Speaker
Yes. Yes. Very good. All right. So, we're four questions each, and it's two each. Wow. So, my last question for you is going to be a close. What TV show does Chandler say Joey will have to watch because Marga, the Dutch lady, chose him? He said Joey will have to, like, stay in on Saturday night and watch...
00:13:18
Speaker
There's a panicked look on Willison's face over there. Yeah. Oh, I don't know. Cause he said all the crazy things and then she was like, nah, I'm good.
00:13:29
Speaker
Yeah. Uh, stay in and watch. oh Oh, Oh, Oh, was it 60 minutes? It's not 60 minutes. Have another, have another guess. Okay. Cause it's like a news show.
00:13:45
Speaker
Isn't it? I don't know, to be honest. I don't know. I know of this show. It's not anything too niche. I think it was very popular, but I don't know when it came out.
00:14:00
Speaker
Was it entertainment tonight? It's not. No, I don't know. It is ready, set, cook. Oh, I wrote that in my notes too. Dang it. Yeah, have no idea what that is.
00:14:15
Speaker
ah feel like it's, you know, they they're given a bunch of ingredients and they've got like 30 minutes to come up with a dish or something. Yeah. i think That would be so fun. What a great show. It would be.
00:14:28
Speaker
All right. What snack... Does Rachel go and get whenever she goes long? I believe that's a pretzel. And?
00:14:39
Speaker
Oh, no. Oh, no. I remember holding a pretzel in her hand. That's one of the two things.
00:14:49
Speaker
Oh, my goodness.
00:14:54
Speaker
ah yeah yeah A pretzel and a churro. no oh No, no. Do you want me to tell you? i mean, she's got something to eat. She needs something to drink. Oh, she has. I mean, I've already lost. I didn't get it. A bottle of water.
00:15:15
Speaker
Bottle of Yoo-Hoo. Oh, no, I don't remember seeing that at all. Because I was like, what is that? It's you who. Now, my question for you is we tied again at two each. Do you have any more questions? Did you have a backup?
00:15:30
Speaker
Do you want to leave as a tie or like sudden death and we do another question each? We can do sudden death. I feel like if you don't get this one, I would be shocked. All right, go for it. It's a pretty easy question. All right. So how were captains picked for the game?
00:15:48
Speaker
I've never seen this before, but Bunny Up. Right. I had never seen that either. All right. by I've got two, so I'm going to go with, I think, why I'm not going to say the easier of the two, but one that I think is okay. Why can't Rachel play in the NFL?
00:16:08
Speaker
Oh, because she works Monday night. She does work Monday night. yeah Look at us go. I've got one more question. do I have one more as well. so Keep going.
00:16:19
Speaker
Sure. Let's see what happens. All right. Okay. So who are the two players wearing Giants gear and what are they wearing? Okay. So Monica is wearing the Giants sweatshirt.
00:16:33
Speaker
And if I recall, I feel that Chandler is wearing a Giants hat. That's correct. Ding, ding, ding. It's just not foreshadowing, but noticed that, and I like the fact that we know spoilers. They end up getting together. And i like the fact that the two of them are wearing the giant's gear. Yes, yes, yes.
00:16:53
Speaker
All right. I think it's only fair. I'm going to give you one. It's a numbers question. The answer is a number. okay I'm going to give you one number either side. Okay. Okay. so if it's not exist So if you're one off, you still get it. How short of the end zone was Rachel when she caught what she thought was the winning? Five feet. There you go. We are destined to tie again. That's right. Another tie. Okay.
00:17:17
Speaker
Okay. I love it I love that we tied even with the bonus questions. Yeah, I'm all out of questions. Yes. I just did five and then just two extra and then Kate was going to work her magic that she didn't need to.
00:17:32
Speaker
but there you go. All right. All right. Well, let's get stuck into this. I'm excited because it's what Steve, our good friend Steve, affectionately refers to as a semi-bottle episode. A bottle episode being one that's just in one scene, you know, one location the whole time, like the one where nobody's ready, which he, of course, graciously graced us with his presence.

Thanksgiving Football Episode

00:17:54
Speaker
Yeah, he did. Go, this one goes Steve. Go, Steve. Semi-bottle episode is a phrase that he coined, and it makes me smile whenever I hear it because, yeah, it reminds me of all the the good times we've had doing podcasts. But, yeah, so we do start off in the girls' apartment, even though we we spend most of our time outside. The girls are really prepping the meal. They're getting Thanksgiving ready and the boys are watching football.
00:18:19
Speaker
I do love this bit. Rachel sticking the marshmallow up Monica's nose. Yes. You know, and because Monica wants them in concentric circles. Is that right? Yes. And what does that mean?
00:18:32
Speaker
Is that smaller, bigger, bigger, bigger, like different circles? can Is it? I would think so. That was, I don't know, but to me, that's what concentric circles are.
00:18:43
Speaker
like Yes. Yeah, start off with the small arcs. Okay, it's ah circles, arcs, or other shapes which share the same center, the larger often completely surrounding the smaller. Yes. So, yeah. There we go. Yeah, okay.
00:18:58
Speaker
Makes sense. All right. Yeah, but I love that you want to do that. No, no, you want that way. You want it. I want to do this. Yes. It's so funny. Well, Phoebe decides she's going get into football, but as soon as she does, it's halftime.
00:19:16
Speaker
i like Joey's idea. Let's go outside play. Get some fresh air. Throw the ball around. Chandler not feeling it He's still down in the dumps about dear Janice who broke up. They broke up in the last episode.
00:19:27
Speaker
um but this is where we learned about ross and monica's heated rivalry the geller cup what happened when they played football and they're not allowed to play we're not allowed to play football mom said so i think yeah says who your mom and they're both like yes yeah yeah well and then and and um and it got cut out but rachel's like What do you mean?
00:19:56
Speaker
like Like, she's terrified. you know? That's fantastic. Yeah, it's clearly we're we're opening some old wounds here. Ross had his nose broken by Monica when they were playing. And so nobody got to win the Geller Cup that like that year. got thrown into the lake, which seems a bit dramatic on Jack and Judy's part to to throw it into a lake.
00:20:21
Speaker
But... i don't I don't know. i might be, well, ah you got to think about like how dramatic this is. Like she broke his nose and then it's Jack who got all mad is what i I took from it. Yes. Yes. Was because he was the one that was all mad and then he threw it in the lake. And so I imagine it's, it's not fun watching your kids fight.
00:20:50
Speaker
It's just not. And then if it's escalated to the point that one of them has a broken nose. Yeah. Oh, why? She's brought her toy in now. Please i say take your unicorn and go on. Bellatrix is the official mascot of the the podcast.
00:21:09
Speaker
You need to take it. Okay. Okay. You're good. If we need to pause, you know, just let me know. umm Yeah. Let's pause just real quick and I'll get it. And we're back. Bellatrix has been banished outside of the recording studio over at Woolison HQ. Right? found us. what What was it? What kind of toy does he have? It's a unicorn. Currently, it's a faceless unicorn because she's eaten the face off, but she's just squeaking it away. so Well, in a nice little moment of serendipity, the unicorn is the national and national animal of Scotland, don't you know?
00:21:45
Speaker
Oh, that's nice. Yes, because they used to put them on their shields back in the day to scare the English because then the English would think there was some wacky animal um in Scotland that looked like a horse with a big spike, whatever it is that unicorns have.
00:22:02
Speaker
Horn. Yes, horn. That's the word. Yeah. Yeah, that's where they's where they came from. So it's the official national animal of Scotland. Oh, that's nice. I like it. everyone Yeah. um But the gala's yet that Ross and Monica, they've decided, as we said in bamboozled, it's been 12 years and they have decided it's

Sibling Rivalry Dynamics

00:22:22
Speaker
time. They can play again. They're grownups now.
00:22:25
Speaker
Or are they? as we will Or are they? was going to. Oh, go ahead. Oh, no. I was just thinking, you know, my brother and i we ah we get along well. But man, there's something about that brother-sister relationship that like if you allow yourself, you will become a kid again. And you know like yeah i will I will fight with my brother, not like physically. Of course. Right. yeah But I can, ah we can pick at each other and he'll say and do things and, you know, just to get me going. Not often, not often, but enough to wear it. And it'll get me riled up real quick.
00:23:15
Speaker
to Press the buttons. He does. He really does. How rude. It's so funny. Yeah. Cause my sisters and I, we've never really been competitive, but I think often it was not long after Kate and I got married. We've been married 10 years.
00:23:31
Speaker
We all went on like a family reunion kind of thing. And she was playing Jenga with one of her brothers. And it was like, you could have heard a pin drop. in that room the vanderays are a competitive bunch and the game got so close that they decided to shake and just call it a tie and i was like didn't you want to win because i know how competitive she can be with her brothers and she's like more important than winning is not losing so it's really an interesting little dip into the side you know winning's good but you can't lose to your brother
00:24:08
Speaker
Right, right. hu Yeah. yeah they They have some good, friendly competition, the three of them. Yeah. You get me and my brother like in an escape room.
00:24:20
Speaker
Right. Or a scavenger hunt. Or ah anything like that. We were talking about joining a jigsaw puzzle championship. We've talked about that, right? Right. But I was, I did not, i feel like maybe I've told you this. So maybe nevermind. But i so I did not invite my brother to be on my imaginary team because I told him, I said, I don't want to be bossed around. Right.
00:24:50
Speaker
I can take direction from anybody but my brother. Except your brother. that That I can understand. Yeah. I like it. well They all decide they're going to play I was going to ask you how long does Monica have until she needs to baste again? that the premise of this time? Was it 28 minutes? You would have got it. Yes. Oh, man! yeah Okay, I've won! You win!
00:25:17
Speaker
um They end up picking teams. Let's see. I've got down Monica, Joey, and Phoebe initially on one team. Ross Chandler and Rachel on the other. Doesn't end up that way, but that's where we start off.
00:25:29
Speaker
um They're playing from the trash can to the light pole to hand touch. And then I couldn't understand what the thing that they said after. Was there another rule in there? i don't There was, and I feel like he said three.
00:25:47
Speaker
but right i don't i don't know yeah maybe it has oh maybe you misses nothing i've got it nope actually um two hand touch will kick off this waiting is what he said okay that's right and then they attempt to kick off and ross what's he does he kick chandler's hand i don't quite remember now and they end up Yeah. Yeah. um I just, I like it when there's, we see not only scenes, but but really this whole episode in a new setting, you know, yeah it's kind of fun to look around and see how this, this park is set up. Joey scores a touchdown straight away.
00:26:27
Speaker
um I'm just gonna going to go through my little notes here. Cause we're all in that one scene and we get the first time where Rachel is just told to go, go long, go long. I know. Poor Rachel. Poor Rachel in this situation.
00:26:43
Speaker
Yeah. She's not trusted to throw, catch, run, do anything. Yeah. But she keeps a good attitude for for pretty much all of it. She wants to contribute. Yeah.
00:26:56
Speaker
But the ball ends up rolling along and then a lady who stops it with her foot who we find out, I believe it's Marga. I forget quite how it's pronounced. Yes, something like that. Because they kept saying it. Mara, Mara. Marga. I've got issues with this later on because there's some some inconsistencies as far as I'm concerned. But we'll we'll talk about that. Yeah.
00:27:23
Speaker
As we meet Marga, Ross and Monica, they start to become a bit unraveled here. They start to fight. But the main focus is Joey and Chandler. They both want Marga's phone number. They both want to ask her out. And then Joey, oh, Joey, goes, you know, I'll let you have her.
00:27:41
Speaker
Which that's that's that's not nowhere near as gracious as he's trying to be. Right. Well, and I feel like... um I don't know. Maybe he didn't mean it like that. That's what I'm thinking. He's a good guy, is Joey.
00:28:00
Speaker
And he's just saying, like I'll let you have her. like I'm not going to compete with you. Not meaning i would definitely win, but just saying, i'm I'm bowing out. You can do your thing.
00:28:14
Speaker
That's the way i took it. and chat But Chandler's probably a little fragile still. Yeah. That's the word. Fragile for sure. Yeah. So he probably takes it as Joey.
00:28:25
Speaker
as Unintentionally. He doesn't mean it like that. okay But that sets off this whole storyline of who is going to, who would she choose? So, okay. I'm looking here and it was actually cut out why she was staying.
00:28:44
Speaker
Because she she was saying she can't go home right now because her roommate is is with a a man. Ah, right. Yeah, we didn't see that. No, it just kind of looks randomly like she's like, okay, can I stay and watch?
00:29:02
Speaker
And, um but that's, that was just a piece that they got, they cut. I don't know why. Right. Yeah. Cause I did find it interesting that there would be a, a Dutch lady, whether she lives or is visiting in New York on Thanksgiving day, just at a park by her. Well, I say by herself, I didn't see the dog in the beginning, but then she does have a dog.
00:29:24
Speaker
Right. Well, and then there was a man, there were other people sitting on that bench and then those people went away. Right. Uh, But a fun fact about that park, yeah the park is obviously not really a park. Right. But it's inside, and they still did it with a live studio audience.

Filming the Football Scene

00:29:43
Speaker
And then the picture, is so there were 300 people in the audience watching as they were doing that set. Yeah.
00:29:53
Speaker
And um the, you know how it looked like they were in the city because they, you know, there was the facades, but then behind it looked like there were more buildings and it was actually a picture that they had blown up and then they had light shining on it. So it looked real, wow but it wasn't.
00:30:16
Speaker
Mm hmm. Right. The only thing I noticed was, I think it was where Chandler kind of, Phoebe's flashing him and he falls into like the bush or something. I think it's that scene you can see like what's meant to be obviously like a concrete wall or blocks or something. It moves a little.
00:30:33
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Yes. Yes. It's so well built. Like if... you know We may have talked to this. I've got no desire to ever really be on you know TV or an action, nothing like that. But the set building and how it's all done, I find that really interesting.
00:30:48
Speaker
Yeah. like How they come up with it all and how they do it. like i could I could be a behind-the-scenes set guy. and And make it look so real. you know like You don't question the fact that that they're outside.
00:31:05
Speaker
like It looks like they're outside. Right. Yeah, yes so I'd love to know all the inside tricks of the trade. um it's a bit It reminds me of like a yeah off topic here, completely, but Elf, the one of the opening scenes where Buddy's like sitting in the classroom and he's obviously so much bigger than all the others. Oh, yeah. And it's like that's some visual trick. He's on a platform and they use cameras at certain angle because all the actors are actually the same height as him.
00:31:32
Speaker
And things, I find that stuff really interesting watching it Yeah. um Yeah. Oh, that is interesting. I just figured they did it with computers. Yep. No, he's sitting in a room with them all, but it's all to do with he's on a platform and it's the angle which they shoot it makes it appear like that. There's a a YouTube, I'm sure, but it's a, I find that stuff. That stuff's super interesting. um Chandler's still kind of annoyed at Joey and I don't know if this is why he rips his shirt if it's on purpose or an accident, but he rips what I believe Joey then says is his favorite shirt.
00:32:07
Speaker
His favorite jersey. Yeah. um Little fun fact about the jersey. Let me see where I've got that written down. That was a very deliberate jersey choice.
00:32:18
Speaker
that Yeah, why? it was. So it's a maroon number 22 jersey. It's the same one that the 1984 Heisman Trophy winner, a Doug Flutie, who played for the NFL for years and years, played for Boston College. Both Doug Faluti and Matt LeBlanc are from the the same small town of Newton, Massachusetts.
00:32:39
Speaker
Oh, that's so cute. Matt LeBlanc's like hometown hero kind of thing. So it was a yeah tribute to his hometown. It was that 22 Maroon shot. Wow. That's so cute. Yes. Because of where we live, it looked to me like ah like a Texas A&M Aggies show. Right. And that's what made me look it up. cause it' I wonder why that's why that number and that color.
00:33:01
Speaker
ha Yeah. Tribute to his hometown. Okay, so fun fact about that ripping the jersey scene, they only filmed that like once, just one time. They talked about the dynamics of it and how it was going to look like in rehearsal.
00:33:20
Speaker
But whenever they did that, they only did it one time because they said that they they wouldn't be able to get the same reaction from the audience if they did the gag more than once.
00:33:31
Speaker
And I think they're right. Yeah. That's interesting. So Chandler, you know, Matthew Perry would have had to grab it in. I always assume that the judges cut, you know, very precisely to make the rip happen.
00:33:45
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. That's interesting. I like that we only did that once. Yeah. And this is where they start to argue about Phoebe's touchdown. did Was the ball hiked off before the buzzer, after the buzzer? But regardless, good for Phoebe. um You know, she didn't have the normal childhood, getting to play in the park and all of those things. So gives me some joy when she has childlike joy, like riding a bike in another episode. And when she gets to do these things that other people did as kids.
00:34:18
Speaker
Yes, yes, absolutely. and And it is. It's so sweet and fun and she's so excited. and then it's frustrating because the buzzer goes off and they're zoomed in on that. So like we don't even have an opinion about whether or not. So what do you think?
00:34:38
Speaker
I choose to believe that it would have counted. Like this they hanged off right when the buzzer goes off, you know, just before it went off. Yeah. I think that's because I want Phoebe's touchdown to count.
00:34:52
Speaker
Okay. That's fair. Yeah. Do you have a thought on it? No. um
00:35:00
Speaker
No. No. All right. No. No, because I could see Monica just doing it anyway. That's true. Yeah, this is true. Yeah, she would. she would Yeah, because it's not really bending the rules or cheating, but you're going to argue that, yeah, it was done. You know what happened would favor her.
00:35:20
Speaker
um But this is where we do nip back up to the girl's apartment for a minute because she has to baste, as we know. And she reveals that she has she fished it out of the lake.
00:35:32
Speaker
Yes, she She's in possession of the Geller Cup. Yes, she is. Yes, which I love. And um I don't know if they were initially just going to play for that 28 minutes and then it got competitive. So they went to play again or quite what happens. But they end up back in the park for pretty much the rest of the episode.
00:35:52
Speaker
Yes. Again, I choose to sort of believe they were just going to play for half an hour and then go back and watch the rest of the Thanksgiving Day game. But emotions got high. The competitive ramped up.
00:36:07
Speaker
And forget dinner. Forget forget the rest of the the NFL game. They are going back to play. Yeah, they are. The Monica and Ross, they start arguing, they're playing rough, and i just wrote, it descends into chaos. It's these little scenes, if I recall, of just... Uh-huh.
00:36:27
Speaker
Yes. Yeah, because they they're looking at all of that and um just kind of starting to lose it, right? Right. They're all just and getting starting to play dirty is is what happens, you know?
00:36:45
Speaker
ah Because have they have they switched? Did they switch and give up? Did they switch the teams yet? I don't think so. I don't have it written down exactly when that happened, I think that's a little later A little bit later. Because I've written down what happens to Monica and that's a little later on.
00:37:05
Speaker
Okay. Because it was tied 21 to 21, right? Whenever they, and then ah with, ah whenever they said that it didn't count, I don't know. Yeah. And then everything kind of descends into chaos. And then that's whenever we're really seeing that Rachel's not doing anything.
00:37:25
Speaker
Like she's got, she's playing with her gum and she's standing by the wall and, you know. That's right. So I think there's that. And that's when Ross blames the fact that Monica's team is winning on the fact that she got to choose first. So that's when they trade Joey for Rachel.
00:37:46
Speaker
um Yeah. And because Joey's like, oh man, i was just up by that much because he's now losing by, I don't know, 20 odd points, whatever it is. um I think that's what happens there. um Okay. Yeah. And then, yeah, whenever Monica, because they start playing really rough, Monica tackles Chandler and then Chandler tackles Joey and, our Joey.
00:38:14
Speaker
Yes. and then and And then Chandler just tackles Joey and then starts dancing. Yes. And then that's whatever Phoebe goes and she like grabs Ross and then just starts running in circles. because That's right. but that's Yes. Yes. Okay. It all becomes farcical somewhere in there. Chandler asks Joey where Dutch people come from, which I do love this little bit. Oh, me too.
00:38:42
Speaker
And I think he says like, he's like the Netherlands. He says it's where Tinkerbell and Peter Pan come from or something. Yeah. Yeah, well, he asks, yeah, where do Dutch people come from? And then he says, ah you know, well, the Pennsylvania Dutch come from Pennsylvania. And he's like, yeah, but ah whatever about the Netherlands, right? It's over by the Netherlands.
00:39:05
Speaker
And then that's whatever he says the thing about Peter Pan and Tinkerbell and... One of my useless pieces of knowledge that probably drives Kate and insane, but I find it interesting, is that, you know, the Pennsylvania Dutch, it's got nothing to do with Dutch.
00:39:21
Speaker
It's a mispronunciation of Deutsch, which is German for German, because the Pennsylvania Dutch speak German. They all came from Germany. Right. The Netherlands and Germany are pretty next door. So I'm sure those two words somewhere along the lines came from the same thing. But it really was, it should be Pennsylvania Deutsch.
00:39:42
Speaker
because it's just up but Well, there you go. Every day's a school day, right? That's the useless piece of trivia today. um But ross and Ross is out of line here, where I think, where calls her Heidi, or whatever he does, because he hasn't, I don't know,
00:40:00
Speaker
like call her by a proper name but heidi to me is and is like swiss or switzerland i don't know right yes you know i could quite pinpoint why i think that if i just think it's a swiss name or if it's from yeah you know something yeah i don't know i don't know but i think the same thing but yeah yeah something like that and he's like you know tell Heidi I can't remember what he says about you know go back to a windmill or something it's like I don't know seems like seems like low-hanging fruit you know for for Ross and comedy there like he should he should he should do better than that um
00:40:42
Speaker
But yeah, Ross calls her Heidi, and and but then but would say I keep pronouncing her name wrong. Marga? Is that right? Yeah, I don't know. think it's Marga. We'll talk about this at the end. Yeah. This is interesting backstory to this lady. Oh, okay, good. Yeah, but she says she would choose Chandler, and then he basically ruins it with his celebration and rubbing it in Joey's face. Mm-hmm.
00:41:08
Speaker
she's done you know she's she doesn't want to uh choose either of them in the end i think chandler's bothered for a few seconds but he gets over pretty quickly um because ultimately she chose him because she chose him and he doesn't really want to date her no not at all um He just wanted to win. Again, it's ah almost like sibling rivalry a little bit. He just wanted to beat Joey.
00:41:34
Speaker
Yeah. I think in that moment. um i love i love the fact that Phoebe flashes Chandler. You know, she uses her strength. I find that very funny in the way he covers his eyes and ends up in the bush and all those kinds of things. Yes. Yeah.
00:41:50
Speaker
um Again, I've just, because there's we're not changing scenes, I'm not sure if I've got my notes in the right order. ah Rachel gets the ball at one point and then she kind of panics, runs outside the fence and then basically smacks Monica in the face with the ball. Yeah. Yeah, she tosses it straight into her face. Right.
00:42:12
Speaker
like And I was like, that's even if you know you're acting, unless it's a foam ball, that's going to hurt a bit. Yeah, it is. Yeah. And then how does Courtney, car how you I imagine it's tricky to act surprised when you know that's coming. You know that's going to hurt a bit getting hit in the face with a ball.
00:42:31
Speaker
um a But she doesn't yeah appear to prepare for it. you know Yeah. Hats off to her. On the commentary like that I was watching about this one episode, um the director, he was talking about how this is one of the his favorite episodes for Courtney Cox because she's having so much fun.
00:42:57
Speaker
And then they went in this whole big thing talking about how this episode was so much better than what they had pictured in their head whenever they wrote the script. Because they all just kind of really got into...
00:43:13
Speaker
playing and and doing the the whole bit you know and I thought that was so good but like there was one part where she's running and then she's like telling off Ross and he's like just the absolute joy and how much fun she was having while they were recording was amazing I love that because, we'll yeah, we'll talk about this at the end, but there's not a whole lot that actually happens in this episode, and yet it's kind of iconic. Like, it's one of ones everybody knows, and that probably ties into what you're saying about the characters, just the actors having so much fun.
00:43:52
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I love it. um We end up, we we're kind of at the last play of the game now where Monica throws the pass and Rachel catches it. It's a great moment.
00:44:04
Speaker
But then she drops the ball, throws it down, celebrates. But she was five feet short of the lamppost. So the ball is still alive. Now, hang on. I have a question because... Because... um whenever they go into like right before that, that thing, don't they say that like they're two points behind or something?
00:44:34
Speaker
Yes. it And i ah so if they were 21 42, um,
00:44:42
Speaker
And they would, like, we were watching, and then they would score, and that was seven points. How did they get two points behind? So I thought about this also. There's going to be no field goals or extra points. there's not So to me... And a touchdown is just seven points, so... Right.
00:45:05
Speaker
So how do you get two points behind? I don't know. thought about that also. Like... you're either I wonder if they did a, like a, like a, what's it called? Whenever they tackle you in your own end zone.
00:45:17
Speaker
I like a safety. Yes. Yeah. Safety. So maybe that could be it. Yeah, I guess that's possible. That could be it. But I had the exact same thought. Okay. um yeah How do you end up down by that specific amount? um But I do love that Rachel catches it, but she, yeah, she panics, or not panics, she celebrates, drops the ball, and suddenly, well, they all realize, but really Ross and Monica realize that the ball is live, and they but whoever gets possession of it, Well, and it's not. reach r Phoebe's the one who brings it up.
00:45:54
Speaker
The one who doesn't even know how to play football. You know? Because it's like, and you know, Chandler's like, funny thing. You didn't score it. And then it's Phoebe who points out that, well, if nobody touched Rachel, it's still live. It's pretty observant for Phoebe.
00:46:16
Speaker
Mm-hmm. Yeah. Who didn't appear to know any of the rules half an hour ago. Right. Yeah. yeah Yeah, interesting with that one. And Ross and Monica, they end up jumping, both grabbing the ball at the exact same time, which again, i think that's got to be difficult as actors to do.
00:46:37
Speaker
you know, so like good on them to be able to both jump down and realistically grab the ball at the same time. Like I wonder if that was one take or if it took many to sort of throw yourself down like that and grab up grab the ball. just Just well done on both their parts, I thought.
00:46:54
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Yes. And then we end up last scene where they're in the girls' apartment. Everyone except Ross and Monica, they're enjoying their Thanksgiving dinner. This is not the last scene. Sorry, that's right. You see, I don't know what happens, but I just saw that there was another scene. And I didn't want to read it. I wanted you to tell me what happens. I've got no idea. Oh, good. Okay.
00:47:19
Speaker
So on the TV cut, on the HBO version, they're eating. And they said, like, I think but ah Phoebe says this is really good. Should we take some down to them? They say no, and it cuts back outside of the park where it's dark, and Ross and Monica still on the ground, haven't moved, neither willing to give up the ball. But that's not the last scene on the DVD version. And then it starts snowing, right? Yes, yes. And then they go back to fighting. Okay, so then then you're in
00:47:51
Speaker
a hallway Inside and they're carrying Ross is carrying the Geller cup and Monica is carrying the, um, the football and she is like stuffed up. Like she's, you know, the episode where she's like, I'm fine. It is like, you put a D on the end of, okay. And so she's talking like that. And so they go into this room and they're just going back and forth about how cold it was And, um you know, Monica realized that there's just more important things in life than beating Ross and like feeling her feet.
00:48:31
Speaker
Right. And so together they go and they throw it down the trust shoot. Right. Then they turn around and they leave the room.
00:48:44
Speaker
OK, and Ross turns, you know, to the left to go down the stairs and then Monica turns around and goes ah right back into the room, opens up the trash thing and yells, did you get it And then it's Phoebe. And she goes, yeah, I got it. Okay. And so right before, and anyway, so she's like, did you get it? And she, I got it.
00:49:11
Speaker
And then you hear her go, Ross, what are you doing down here? Yes. And then he goes, oh, nothing. And then that's how it ends. See, I love the fact that you get extra scenes and I try, and i don't want to watch them because I like when you bring them up. This one, I'm going to have to, I've never seen that scene before.
00:49:31
Speaker
Oh, it's so funny. It's so funny. And like, they agree that everything is a tie and, you know, it's just more important that they spend time, you know, and it's very sweet. Yeah.
00:49:44
Speaker
And then, no, no, they're still competitive. That competitive edge. Yeah. That's fantastic. Well, I found out two interesting, well, three interesting things for me in this episode. One was Joey's shirt.
00:49:57
Speaker
Yeah. little nod to his own time. Second one, near the beginning, when they're in the park, there's two parents, as i assume, and two kids on the swings. Yeah. Those two kids are Marta Kaufman's daughters. Yeah.
00:50:13
Speaker
Oh, that's nice. They got to appear in an episode. So that was really cool that they were on the swings. But the thing I want to kind of tell you about, which I just thought was interesting, was the the actress who plays Marga.

Marga's Accent Story

00:50:27
Speaker
She's been in one or two other things, not a whole bunch.
00:50:31
Speaker
um But she's American with an American accent. Oh. When she auditioned for the part, she decided to put on an accent. that's where this whole Dutch line thing came from. The producers never knew that that was not her real accent.
00:50:51
Speaker
off camera kept it going which i think is brilliant that's fine and they wrote that based on the fact that they just thought let's make her dutch even though again i did some googling into this and people are correct and without sounding really nerdy the accent isn't a dutch accent you know smart it's more it's more of a russian accent but that's because she made it up she just made up an accent and they said all right we're gonna you know, say this. that Go with that. Sounds great. Absolutely.
00:51:20
Speaker
But none of the crew nor the casting directors, anyone found out until afterwards that that was not her real accent. Wow. That that I just love her name is. She's got a great name too. so It sounds like a, a wrestler's name, Susanna midnight.
00:51:36
Speaker
Her real last name is midnight, which I think is a great name. Hmm. Um, That is a great name. so Is that her born name? it an Indian name? Like what on earth? I like that. I just know I like it. If somebody said I'm Susanna Midnight, I'm paying attention.
00:51:56
Speaker
You know, something about that name is pretty cool. um so i just love that this that she pulled this off uh i've sent her a message on instagram but it doesn't appear she uses it but i would love to hear more about this so if i happen to hear back i will that would be awesome I'll let you know but I just like that's the coolest thing ever to just put on an accent and then get the part and then you got it reminds me it's something Joey would do you know he'd put on a fake accent and then gets the part like where he pretends to be able to dance and things like that and then you've got to see it through right and not forget whatever it was that you said
00:52:40
Speaker
exactly exactly well i did i i am excited i've loved and loved this episode i've really enjoyed re-watching it let's think and 10 i mean we could do 10 basted turkeys because that's one of the main things oh yeah that's a lot turkey it's a lot of turkey but if you were getting how many basted turkeys would you give this episode eight and a half Eight and a half.
00:53:06
Speaker
I think that's a very solid choice. I am also coming in at eight and a half. Which is nice because we've had a little difference of late. the Eight and a half. I think and it's a combination of i think I think the acting in it is great. The storyline isn't particularly anything to write home about. But that doesn't matter because the acting is great. And there's some level of nostalgia to this episode.
00:53:32
Speaker
I don't know quite know what it is, but it lives in friends lore. It lives in the the history of the show, them playing football together. I love that. Yeah, yeah well for sure. and it's a thing.
00:53:47
Speaker
is' ah it seems like a very wholesome American thing to do on Thanksgiving Day is watch football and play outside. Absolutely. And if we yeah think about the Geller Cup, it really just gets mentioned twice and it's shown for seconds. And again, that lives in, that's Friends fandom folklore.
00:54:10
Speaker
Oh, yeah. Everyone knows the Geller Cup. Absolutely. Great episode. How about your Gunther Central Park of the week? My Gunther Central Park is Monica.
00:54:23
Speaker
She's just solid. as She's funny. And, you know, and she was going to be, i think, my Gunther Central perk. And then whenever I watched the commentary, that just kind of solidified it.
00:54:36
Speaker
Because right it's she she's funny. she's um It's just good. Really good. Very nice. I was torn this week.
00:54:49
Speaker
But I think I'm going to, don't know if it is bending the rules, but we're going to see. i'm You can bend the rules. You can. It's okay. I am going, my Gunther Central Parks, plural, are Ross and Monica together.
00:55:02
Speaker
There you go. Because for me, yes it was either going to be Ross and Monica together or Phoebe. But I just love the moment where Phoebe catches the touchdown. I just, that's one my favorite. I love that childlike stuff we talked about with her.
00:55:17
Speaker
But Ross and Monica, make it's it's this whole episode is about their rivalry. And without one, to me, you don't have the other. So I couldn't separate them in my mind. So I decided to to split the Gellar Cup down the middle.
00:55:31
Speaker
Half the Ross, the Monica. love it It's just a two-by-four nailed to a troll doll. That's all it is. That's all is. I love it. I think that that's perfect, though. that's Love it.
00:55:46
Speaker
Yes. This time, Ross and Monica and eight and a half. Basted turkeys out of ten. And yeah, it is fun because it's Thanksgiving, but again, it's not really about Thanksgiving at all. We have much more Thanksgiving-y Thanksgiving episodes in the future. Right.
00:56:03
Speaker
Yes. yeah Yes. Yeah, this one just stands alone. Well, let's see. If we look forward to next week, we have the one where Rachel quits. huh Oh, good! Yep.
00:56:16
Speaker
Yeah. Yes. I like to think. This is whenever Mark starts showing up. Right. I don't remember. It might well be. i can't quite picture where Mark starts.
00:56:29
Speaker
Uh huh. The only thing I feel i remember about this episode is Joey talking. You know you don't have the fear. You got to have the fear, you know, because she she needs to quit.
00:56:41
Speaker
Yeah. good That's all. That's all I remember off the top of my head for the one where Rachel quits. Yes. I like it. All right. Any final thoughts about this episode, the one with the football?
00:56:55
Speaker
Yes. Today would have been a great day to go outside and play football. You know what, though? I feel like it's normally snowing in New York in November, isn't it? i would I would think so. i'm trying I've never been up there for the Thanksgiving. I've been up there at Christmas time. I've been up there in February and March. And it's very cold and often s snowing. Yeah. um You know what? But it did snow at the end. But, ah yeah, I've been to New York in November, like that week of Thanksgiving. And it was so cold.
00:57:31
Speaker
it's So cold. It really does get bitterly, bitterly cold. Yeah. yeah Although we we did go, it was very romantic in the end. We went up for spring break. Kate's brother lives just outside of the city and we stayed at his house. And then we went into the city to see Wicked. And it was, there was a ah foot of snow on the ground. So we got the train in and we were surprised the trains were running. But they weren't. And we went in.
00:57:58
Speaker
And it was it was it was like a Sunday morning. And we were going to we actually went to do a behind-the-scenes Wicked thing, which was super cool, at the Gershwin Theatre. Then we went to see the matinee. But there was nobody around. So it was Manhattan, kind of midtown, all the buildings, all the famous stuff, snow on the ground, and just so quiet. It was such a great experience. Wow.
00:58:22
Speaker
I bet. Nobody around. um So absolutely fantastic. Would highly recommend New York. I mean, it is cold, but New York when it's been snowing is a a special kind of magical, I think.
00:58:35
Speaker
Yeah. Pretty fantastic. But yeah, next week, the one where Rachel quits. I'm pretty excited to get in into that one too. um But yeah, on that note, it's been another wonderful episode. Thank you, Deanne, as always. Thank you, Al.
00:58:52
Speaker
Absolutely. And thank you all out there for listening to this week's episode of the Purple Door Podcast.
