Introduction and Episode Overview
00:00:04
Speaker
Well, hello and welcome to this week's episode of the Purple Door Podcast, a friend's rewatch pod. I'm one of your hosts, Alistair, alongside Deanne. Deanne, how are you this evening? Super awesome, Al. It's just a great day, isn't it? It is ah a little toasty. Summer is here, but it's a great day indeed.
00:00:27
Speaker
Let's see. Well, this week we are going to be reviewing the one with the
Storylines and Overlaps
00:00:33
Speaker
ballroom dancing. This was one of those ones that I could remember the main story, but couldn't remember the ah the subplots, the B-plots, all of that. Couldn't remember what went on. So I'm excited to dig into this one with you this week. So how about I remembered every single one of the subplots.
00:00:54
Speaker
Like I remembered all of the storylines. Right. But I did not put those storylines together. Which so weird because they overlap. They do. That's funny.
00:01:06
Speaker
ah Yeah. So I don't know. But whatever. Yeah. I enjoyed it. i did too. And we quote this one all the time. Right, right.
Bamboozled Segment Preparation
00:01:17
Speaker
Yeah, it's it's got some good lines in it. Trigger, you know, i'm I'm glad to see him and he gets a lot lot of good lines in this episode. I'm excited to get stuck into it.
00:01:30
Speaker
Yes, yes. But beforehand, as always, we've had our our bamboozled questions vetted and checked by Kate. So we had no duplicate and I think we are ready to go.
00:01:44
Speaker
It's an even episode. It's your turn.
Quiz and Episode Humor
00:01:48
Speaker
It's on me. All right. Well, my first question for you this week is, what does the sign say above the garbage chute?
00:02:00
Speaker
Now, there is a small sign that did. i did and Because it says, like, no hazardous waste. Or something along those lines, right? It's not exactly it but that is good enough. Absolutely. ok It says no disposal of hazardous materials. Dang it.
00:02:21
Speaker
Okay. But you get that. You got it. I don't know. I think so. Because read it and I saw it. Dang. Okay. All right.
00:02:32
Speaker
What did Traeger's mom tell him that he was when he was younger? This is potato with legs and arms and a head. How mean.
00:02:45
Speaker
then you look at him and you're like, huh. Kind of get it. Yeah, that's not nice. Yeah. i just There's something I love about the fact that he specifies he's not just a potato, but he has arms, legs and the head. He's Mr. Potato. oh Poor Mr. Poor Mr. Trigger, indeed. and My second question for you is how many times a week does Chandler try to go to the gym?
00:03:16
Speaker
Four. Four it is. Yeah, but he's missed the last 1,200 times. That was going to be one of my questions that I thought you were going to ask me was how many times has he missed it?
00:03:29
Speaker
That's so fun. Yeah, dang, me too, buddy. All right. So what's the name of the lady that Traeger wants to dance with?
Ray Barry Pizza and Nostalgia
00:03:39
Speaker
Traeger wants to dance with.
00:03:41
Speaker
It's in my notes, I think. Oh, is it Marge? It is more. All right. Yeah, good I had like Margie and things in my head. All right. We are both two for two. Yeah, we are. See, I don't know. I'm so curious what Marge looks like because she goes from being this tiny petite thing to like a lady with big blue hair.
00:04:08
Speaker
I just don't know. it's There's something in that name because you may or may not know my car's name, Madge, because she is she's not the best looking thing. She is industrial. She gets the job done.
00:04:21
Speaker
and it comes from it comes from um in the office. Michael Scott, I think, thinks the lady who works in the warehouse is just Madge. So there's just something kind of manual laborish about Madge.
00:04:34
Speaker
And then Marge is pretty close. Poor old Madge. Poor old Madge.
Rachel and Traeger's Garbage Dilemma
00:04:38
Speaker
But then Simpson. That's true. and With her tall blue hair and she's tall and thin and oh with her raspy voice. That was not a good impersonation at all. but I was buying it. I was buying it.
00:04:55
Speaker
Okay. All right. My next question for you. Speaking of Trigger, this is a tricky one, but you you may have it. What's his apartment number? zero it is well done i thought that might be a tricky one yes because it has zero i thought at first i saw that and i thought it was the eye hole like the peak the people and um because it also says like maintenance on the yeah the door and and i was like no that's a zero man yeah and i It seems like I would have put that question, but I didn't. Yeah. It seemed like one you might.
00:05:36
Speaker
All right. So what's the name of the pizza place that the pizza box is from? Oh, we we are going to be discussing this.
00:05:47
Speaker
This is Ray Barry. It is. It is. had to think about through it um because we it's a real, it was a real place.
00:05:58
Speaker
Really? We're going to talk, and it's not the first time we've seen Ray Barry pizza in Friends, I found out when I did a little digging. Oh, fun. Okay. But we'll
Chandler's Gym Membership Struggles
00:06:09
Speaker
we'll get into that. I'm excited to learn something new. Yes. All right. So you are you are four for four. Nope.
00:06:17
Speaker
Nope. Nope. Three, two. ah Yes. That's right. Ray Barry. It's three each. Because I'm asking you your fourth now, which is what is Phoebe's boss's name?
00:06:35
Speaker
Oh, no. Is it? is it Oh, no.
00:06:46
Speaker
I've got two names in my head. All right, let's go. And it's in my thing. Miss Lisa or Miss Cooper. is neither one of those is right. Miss Carter.
00:07:00
Speaker
oh no. yeah now yeah you have the second syllable, right?
00:07:09
Speaker
You're so close. You've got the second syllable kind of there.
Phoebe's Workplace Crush Escapades
00:07:14
Speaker
Potter. Mrs. Potter. It is Miss Potter. Man.
00:07:24
Speaker
Okay. What color is the rag that is in Mr. Trigger's back pocket? That is a fantastic question. i have absolutely no idea.
00:07:38
Speaker
Can I ask, are you just looking for one color? Yeah. but And it's in his pocket um at the very beginning, like whenever he's yelling at Rachel and then whenever Joey goes down to talk to him and then whenever Joey goes back and talks to him again. All right. Is it red? Mm-hmm.
00:07:57
Speaker
It is red. It's kind of like... It is red. i was It's probably nothing to do with but was thinking red like a rose. He's going out for a dance. Maybe it's some kind of subtle thing, so just took a guess.
00:08:08
Speaker
Yeah, that was a random guess because he's in his work clothes. He's in his cupboards. Well, let's see. My final question for you is how did Rick injure his sciatica?
00:08:23
Speaker
Oh, uh... A sit-in for Greenpeace, like 16 hours. sixty You've got all the details. Yes. Yes. Excellent. Yes. Okay. Well, speaking of the massage place, what is the poster that's hanging on the wall while Rick is getting his massage?
00:08:46
Speaker
That's a great question. I don't know if it's there. I just know I've seen somewhere. It's like the human body with all the different muscles, but I don't know if that's there.
00:08:58
Speaker
No, what is it? florida It's a body part. Oh, it's a, okay. Well, I haven't got it, but so it's a poster of a body part. here ah with Oh, go ahead. I was going to guess like a leg.
00:09:15
Speaker
You're close. An arm. No. No. we Closer whenever you said legs. Closer. Torso. Nope. You're going the wrong way.
00:09:28
Speaker
Foot. ah Yes. There we go. Yes. Foot reflexology. That's fantastic. I missed that all together.
00:09:39
Speaker
Well, I scored the We Got 4 out of 5 each, which puts us and then another time for a third week in a row. That's crazy. Yeah, that's kind of nuts. i think I've got two extras for you, if you'd like I've only got one. All right. but Yes, I would like both of yours, please. Okay, this is a three-parter. What does Joey think about to distract himself?
00:10:06
Speaker
Sandwiches. Yep. baseball and Chandler. Ding, ding, ding. That's it. Yes. Yes. All right. What is the name of the massage place that Phoebe interviews at?
00:10:23
Speaker
Oh, I thought you were going to say that she works out and gets fired because I know that one. I do not know where she interviews. Man, that's the one that I thought you were going to ask me for sure because you see the top of it.
00:10:37
Speaker
right before like you go into the interview it's Laura and Jen's massage I missed I completely missed that all right my final extra bonus question what nicknames does Chandler give Mr. Trigger uh bunny rabbit bunny rabbit indeed all
Joey Saves the Apartment with Dance
00:11:00
Speaker
yeah bunny rabbit I love it Well, let's get stuck into this one. I will. Let's see. We start off in the girls' apartment and Chandler got a new wallet. And then but really the focus of this is Rachel puts an empty juice container right back in the fridge. And Monica calls her out for not taking the trash out and basically doing her part.
00:11:28
Speaker
So Rachel ends up taking a bag of trash and an empty pizza box to the garbage chute. From Rayberry Pizza. So Rayberry Pizza. Let me copy and paste something over. This says, Rayberry Pizza was a notable chain of New York City pizzerias started by Sicilian immigrant Joseph Barry, who purchased an original Ray's Pizza in 1973, which Renowned for its classic New York City style slices, the chain famously exp expanded to several locations, including Third Avenue, before permanently permanently closing all storefronts.
00:12:06
Speaker
Kate had a look at, I think it was early two thousand s 2011, she found that the last one shut. But Ray Barry's Pizza has featured in several episodes, most notably in the one where Ross can't flirt, where they get several pizzas delivered. It's Ray Barry's Pizza.
00:12:27
Speaker
Oh, wow. Okay. So, I mean, as far as I can tell, it's just a sort of ah a paying tribute, you know, to a real New York pizza institution. But I thought that was pretty cool.
00:12:39
Speaker
um Because again, I thought that might be a question you ask. I saw it, Googled it and went down that rabbit hole. nice yeah very nice well speaking of nice tell you who wasn't nice was mr trigger when she tries to yeah yeah put that now she shouldn't have left it there but he kind of goes off on a little bit about being a spoiled whatever it is with you know daddy buy me a pony have the the cast of cats sing happy birthday to me Like, all of that stuff. um he He yells at her. He's not very nice to her. um
00:13:18
Speaker
I don't know. I think he goes overboard quite a bit. Yeah. in that But he had just spent, what, a half hour unclogging a trash chute? This is true. Let's honest.
00:13:31
Speaker
ah Like, and he was probably kind of grumpy, feeling a little underappreciated. and Annoyed with the residents and... Yeah, and then she turned around and did the exact same thing. Yeah, so I kind get it.
00:13:47
Speaker
But bed still, no excuse for being and mean. no no need for that. um She goes back to the girl's apartment and then...
00:13:58
Speaker
I can't quite remember the order of everything, but Joey's going to defend her honor. Joey, the best friend of all of them, I think. He's going to handle this. He's going to go and talk to Trigger about this.
00:14:10
Speaker
Oh, my gosh. But Rachel got so super dramatic about it. that's right. Because Monica's like, just let it go. And she's like, whatever, you're not the one who just almost got killed. That's right. Are you kidding?
00:14:25
Speaker
Like, calm down. Right. Calm down. Not that big of a deal. Not that big of a deal. um And the sort B plot starts here. Monica sees that Chandler has a gym card. and um But he's missed, as we discussed in Bamboozled, tries to go four times a week, but he's missed 1,200 times. Yeah.
00:14:51
Speaker
He's, yeah, he's not not one for going to the gym. Ross asks him why he doesn't quit. And this starts this whole hilarious story. He says it's too hard to quit because they bring out Maria.
00:15:03
Speaker
And you can't say no to her. She's a, what is she, a spandex lycra gym treat? treat yes lycra spandex covered treat yeah so ross is going to go be strong for him they're going to go and quit together which is uh just just kind of fantastic okay so just for funsies because you know that's a just slightly crazy do you know that if he had missed the last 1200 times
00:15:36
Speaker
how long he's at least had this gym membership and he's been paying $50 a week. All right. Let me think this through. It's going to be. Well, 600, 300 days. 300.
00:15:52
Speaker
days earthre suddenly the mental. You're doing a great job. i use my calculator. You want me just tell you? Give me just a second. Okay. three hundred week I'm going with it just over six years.
00:16:07
Speaker
Oh, 5.76 years. Okay, i went the wrong way slightly. 9,2,3,0,7,6,9,2. Yeah, of course it is. Yes. Yeah, that's it.
00:16:19
Speaker
That's fantastic. That's a lot of And $50 a month is more than that's a lot more than I pay for my gym membership now. And I know it's Manhattan, but it's also 30 years ago. Right. How much do you pay? Because I see Fitness Connection is only $19.99 month. I pay 24 and change, call it 25 at Planet Fitness, but that's for the black card, which is like their top level, because then I can bring Kate so she doesn't need her own membership. So it works out, you know, because we. Wow, so that's like $12.50 a month.
00:16:54
Speaker
Exactly. And we get to use their massage beds and all the bits and pieces. They have some fancy things. Because I'll go by myself sometimes. Kate usually goes with me, so that works out best.
00:17:07
Speaker
Okay. For us to do it that way. Yeah. yeah and it's only five There's two within a five-minute drive. So it's pretty nice. Yeah.
00:17:18
Speaker
See if they want to sponsor the podcast. We'll get Planet Fitness on board. There you go. Let's Planet Fitness. Let's do it. All right. We get the first glance inside the mysterious world of Mr. Trigger's office.
Joey's Negotiation with Traeger
00:17:32
Speaker
Side note, we never find out his first name, do we? It's just Mr. Trigger or Trigger.
00:17:38
Speaker
yep Mr. It says, Joey goes and confronts him and Trigger's not having any of this and basically says, I don't need this headache. They are living there illegally. They've sub it's beat they've been subletted, the apartment, by the grandma and was rent control. i was I would have bet decent money that you would have asked me um about the Rent Stabilization Act and what year it was.
00:18:03
Speaker
Yep, I thought about that, actually. That was the one I thought where they said that. 1968, which I guess means... I guess the whole idea is the grandmother is kind of grandmothered in. So she gets a ah stable rent of rate as long as she lives there.
00:18:22
Speaker
But because she's subletting it, she shouldn't really be doing that. So Trigger's not having it. He's like, I don't need this headache. I don't need this hassle. I've got toilets to unclogged and garbage chutes to take care of. They're out of here. They're done. Mm-hmm.
00:18:40
Speaker
ah So Joey, Joey being the honorable guy that he is, did the right thing, but it doesn't quite doesn't quite pan out. No. We go back up to the girl's apartment. Phoebe doesn't want to go to work because she's got the hots for this guy, this this client, Rick.
00:19:00
Speaker
um she yeah I've forgotten quite how it develops and who notices what, but just as she's leaving, Suddenly people notice her nails are done and she's got a toe ring and an anklet. Is it an ankle bracelet?
00:19:17
Speaker
Yeah, um she's got an yeah an anklet and a toe ring. She's had a pedicure. And yeah, but then it also made me laugh whenever she had talked about her oath that she took. Yes. and it's oh I should have asked you that.
00:19:36
Speaker
At that part, I was like, oh, that'd be a good one. Like, what is involved in Phoebe's oath? Right? Basically, not to fool around with clients and always be prepared.
00:19:48
Speaker
There you go. Yes.
00:19:52
Speaker
What does Phoebe say it is? She's like, it's something day. That's it. Arabian princess day. Arabian princess day. And then she gets all mad and leaves.
00:20:03
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Oh, that just leave me alone. And then she leaves. Yes. Yes. That was Arabian princess day. She leaves and then Joey comes in and kind of, you know, just basically says to go, yeah, he's going to kick you out. Bye. And tries to leave and um tells Rachel what happens. And then they, Rachel and Monica tell him that he's got to go figure this out. He needs to go downstairs and make this right somehow. Yeah.
00:20:34
Speaker
yes yeah which which of course he does we will get there but we go over to the gym next chandler and ross chandler's trying to quit i want to quit the gym yeah well and ross is like pumping him up before they even go in you know no all right you know and you don't want washboard abs and he's like no i want a flabby gut that's right man
00:21:01
Speaker
It's so good. ah You know, and Ross doesn't have a whole lot to do in this episode, but i do he's been he's been a good friend almost. Like, I guess he was just bored that day to suddenly go, yeah, I'll down to the gym with you and help you quit. That's big... That's a good friend thing to do. It's a good thing. Yeah. Yeah, a quiet day for him. And they cut out a scene with him.
00:21:24
Speaker
And I can't wait to tell you about it whenever we get to that part. I am looking forward to this. um But he's sent to see Dave in the office. And when Chandler goes to see Dave, which is for members only, so Ross isn't allowed to go, they bring Maria out, um yeah who to me couldn't look more stereotypical of the time.
00:21:47
Speaker
just oh yeah with the big hair and spandex tights that look like her legs yeah yes yeah couldn't be more staring i don't does she even talk does she maybe say hi to ross i don't even remember that's hi i think like i don't know in my head she did yeah that's what i was thinking she said something but maybe she didn't um So yeah, that that Maria was a result of the guy at the desk trying to talk Ross into a membership. I'm pretty sure Ross does end up going to the gym. We don't ever see it, but I think he talks about it That's the part that gets cut out.
00:22:27
Speaker
Okay. Okay. Yeah. Is it in this scene? um No, no, it's in a minute. Okay. yeah I am looking forward to it. We go over to Healing Hands where Phoebe is massaging Rick.
00:22:43
Speaker
um It is Rick, right? That's his name? that is Rick. and that she you His sciatica is hurting. and Yeah. Now we're sitting for Greenpeace.
00:22:56
Speaker
That's right. Phoebe almost whimpers. She's falling for this guy. and then she bites him. Yes. What the heck? What are you thinking, Phoebe? um we We go back over to Trigger's office and this is where Joey's kind of like, I'll do anything, I'll do anything.
00:23:14
Speaker
um Can't kick me out, what would you do with the chick and the duck, I think is in this scene. And that he thinks pretty quickly for for Joey, where he says that that's his and and Chandler's nicknames for each other, I think he says. Yes.
00:23:28
Speaker
um And then he it says, I would have thought it was the other way around. Right. there was a chick And Joey was duck, but whatever. And I love the way Drew Grassom to be his dancing partner. Joey's responsive. It's not prison lingo, is it? Right. Yes.
00:23:47
Speaker
That's a that's a great line. that that okay So then right here is where the scene that got cut is. Right. Is this right after that? He's like, you know, it's not prison lingo, is it? Well, then it goes back to the gym and um ro our Chandler is sitting in ah Dave's office.
00:24:08
Speaker
Okay. And he's like, I want to quit the gym. I want to quit the gym. and then um the guy's like, you know, are are you not happy with your body? And he's like, nope, I'm happy with my body.
00:24:22
Speaker
And then he goes, well, most days. And so he's kind of, you know, he's like, everybody has their days. And so then the guy goes on and he's like, um and he's like, Chandler made some comment about, and then I remember what a nice smile I have.
00:24:39
Speaker
Right. right And then, um so then the guy's like, okay, well, you know, if you give us up, Did you know that we were voted best equipment in all of New York City for the last two years?
00:24:52
Speaker
And then the phone rings and he picks up the phone and he says, oh, okay. All right. Thanks. And he hangs up the phone. And then he goes, besides, you don't want your friend to have to work out alone, do you? And then he pulls like the blinds, the blinds go up and Ross,
00:25:11
Speaker
It has his like tie thrown over his shoulder and he's riding a bike. And Maria's standing there like leaned on it, talking to him.
00:25:21
Speaker
yeah he's like ah And then, and then they go um back over to Central Perk. And then that's whenever they're talking to Monica and Joey are talking and everything. And then Chandler and Ross come in.
00:25:39
Speaker
That's fantastic. Yes. All right. And I'm really sad it got cut out. Yeah, that's a great scene. It was a great scene. And it was so funny. And it didn't make it.
00:25:51
Speaker
I don't know. It gave some context. Yeah. What happens next? Absolutely, yeah. I'll need to go and look that scene up. But as you said, we go over to Central Park and Joey is telling you Monica and Rachel about Mr. Trigger and the deal that he's made.
Super Ball and Dance Practice Finale
00:26:07
Speaker
and He wants to impress Marge. I do love the name the Super Bowl.
00:26:12
Speaker
like it's such a simple joke but it's just i don't know why it makes me smile i just picture the sign the super bowl and uh all these know building superintendents uh you know i don't really what they talk about share war stories i'm sure of you know trash shoots and all of that stuff and getting clogged and yeah yes and it's who want their birthday happy birthday sung to them by the entire cast of cats that's right that's right i just love this image of them all gathering together like i assume building maintenance people they they work in their building and they don't talk to each other why would they but there's this underground community of building superintendents who all sit around and talk about their woes
00:27:01
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. I kind of hope that that does exist. And that is true. Yeah, I think so. Yeah. i think it has to, right? Like that. I would imagine being a building superintendent is a lot like any other profession where if you find people who have the same.
00:27:22
Speaker
yeah Woes and things that they get happy about. you know, and and share good locksmiths and whatnot. Exactly. That's true. they And, you know, yeah, good plungers, you know, all of that. I want to look and see if there's a Facebook group.
00:27:38
Speaker
I bet you there. Now I'm intrigued. Absolutely. So, um yeah, Rachel, Joey tells Monica and Rachel that Trigger's wanting to impress Marge. Ross and Chandler come in, and this is where I found out that Ross has joined the gym because Chandler can't leave him without a spotter, so they're both members now.
00:27:59
Speaker
um Rachel finds the fact that Ross goes to the gym, we'll start, hilarious. Um... but i've no you know there's a few times ross has had his shirt off in the show he's always looked to me like he goes to the gym like he is he's he's a fit healthy guy okay just walked past me as i said that and made the funniest look it won't come across in the podcast she went like she went like that oh yeah Again, terrible podcasting with my visuals of of what she did. um But yeah, it it doesn't seem that far fetched that Ross would go to a gym, I don't think. But they've decided they're going to cut the gym off at the source. They're going to go to the bank, um close their accounts, then the gym won't be able to get them.
00:28:52
Speaker
uh phoebe comes in and tells tells the gang what she did and this is where joey offers his sage advice have you got to think of things that distract you sandwiches baseball chandler and then what possibly my favorite line of the episode where chandler says thank you oh no thank you um bill just just the delivery of it is uh is so good um We go back to Trigger's office and they're starting their dance lesson here. Mr. Trigger spins Joey straight into the door, which is just fantastic. And this is that great line of, mum just says, I'm a big potato with arms, legs and a head, or however he phrases it.
00:29:40
Speaker
Poor old Mr. Trigger. Because we we like him, right? I like him. he seems like I like him too. Yeah, a little grumpy, but lovable guy, I think. Yeah. Yeah, because he's a nice guy. he is a nice guy. Yeah. yeah i think so.
00:29:56
Speaker
um So let's see. my so My notes for the rest of that scene of kind of disappeared. um I think I've just written written that Joey's being a good friend again.
00:30:08
Speaker
you know he's looking out for Mr. Triga. He pumps him up a little bit. you know And then he's like, come on. like Let's do give it another go. It's probably my fault. I'm not used to dancing with a dude. yeah know And then like then they found their rhythm.
00:30:26
Speaker
That's right. And it was cute. They did the little spin jump thing. That noise that Joey makes, the kind of woo-hoo. when yeah You know, it's just great. yeah yeah Yeah. Joey's default is to look out for other people. And I think that's such a great quality. Yes, absolutely.
00:30:46
Speaker
um We go back up to the girls' apartment. Quick note in that scene. Monica is sitting there drinking not a diet Snapple like I have in my hand, but a diet Napple. The S has been scored out of this very drink.
00:31:01
Speaker
wow i'm glad you didn't ask me that yeah she's drinking diet napple which is just a funny name joey dances in the apartment um and rachel monica tease him i can't remember what they calls a bit call it but he corrects them that it's a pas de bourree Yes, a little dancey thing.
00:31:23
Speaker
dancey thing. Do you know where we've heard? Have we had it already where we hear pas de bourree before? Yes. Yes, I do. In tap class with the other Monica. That's right. Now, do you know what a pas de bourree So, i you know, I didn't.
00:31:42
Speaker
I quickly looked up how to spell it and it told me and I've already forgotten. okay. So, it's ah like ah it's almost like a like a you step back and it's like a ball change where you kind of shift your weight.
00:31:56
Speaker
So it was um originally a ballet move, a ballet move, but then it kind of has, it wormed its way into jazz and across all your different kinds of dance mood or dance style. Well, that would explain the reference I know it from is where Joey, do you remember he lies on his resume, says he's one of the Zoom kids, all of that stuff. And then he has to teach the class because the guy's silly. And he goes, Ron Deshaun, Ron Deshaun, whatever that is, Padrebury, Padrebury. Right. Yeah. I love that it's popped up again, you know, for the yeah the third time. um ah ah like Yeah. And then he ran away.
00:32:40
Speaker
Yes. i'll Again, I love the joy, you know, yeah, he kind of plays it off a little bit that it's manly like a sport. He's also not afraid to just he loves the debt loves to dance. Yeah. um Yeah, I think it's kind of makes me sad, right?
00:32:59
Speaker
A little bit sad. I don't know, because he obviously very much likes it. Yeah. Very much. And then he's obviously very good. He doesn't know how to lead yet But... um like it just i i don't know i feel like maybe he should have gone into musical theater or something is is this i wasn't sure whether we'd talk about this or not but the one line that causes controversy because it didn't age well is he comes in and monica goes how was dance how was dancing gay yet
00:33:32
Speaker
Oh, yeah. And i wonder if there was still, you know, in that at that time, if there was there was indeed, you know, that's a stereotype. So Joey wouldn't be willing to embrace it as much as he should.
00:33:46
Speaker
Yeah, and I think that's probably still a type of a stereotype, which I, I don't know. It just makes me sad because dancing is fun. And right like It shouldn't make a difference one way or the other what your preference is. Exactly. If you enjoy it, you should do it. Exactly.
00:34:08
Speaker
Dancing for everybody. Dancing is for everybody. Remember whenever all if that was a big deal for like all the, oh, maybe you don't because you didn't live here. And football players aren't the same thing to me and you. But it was a real big deal probably in the early 90s and maybe a little bit before, but that football players were taking dance classes to work on their like agility and flexibility and things like that. So it was like a huge deal.
00:34:41
Speaker
Right. They were taking these ballet classes and dance classes for that. yeah but yeah i did not know that. Yeah. um Yeah, we we now go pop over to the bank. Chandler and Ross are trying to close their accounts. and They want to quit the bank. They want to quit the bank. They run into the same problem. Miss Lambert is the lady who handles the closures. Karen Lambert.
00:35:08
Speaker
And you can just see it on Chandler and Ross' face that this isn't going to go well. um We go back over to Healing Hands where Phoebe is at this this moment still employed. She's struggling to concentrate. This was the one I was going to ask you. I would ah no i would have sworn you were going to ask me. About the time?
00:35:30
Speaker
The time's on the clock. Yep. Yeah. So I wrote them down in anticipation. 1.15 and 3.30. That's the one. Yeah, wrote them down.
00:35:41
Speaker
Because I'm like, even though we don't look at our notes, we have integrity as we talked about here. I always think if I write it down, will help lock it in my brain. remember it. Yeah. Yep. Me too. So she is struggling to concentrate. shes So she massages this guy for for at least over over two hours.
00:35:58
Speaker
um Yeah. And basically she ends up telling him that she's got a massive crush on this on him. And as they are embracing, Mrs. Potter comes in with the next client.
00:36:12
Speaker
Which is so wild to me. Yeah. Everything about that is so, I mean, obviously so inappropriate. But even if you took away the inappropriate and she...
00:36:25
Speaker
Just being that bold. And that I'm just like, wow. Just bursting in. Because my thought was, even if everything was above board, Rick is probably still going to be getting dressed. And things like you just knock on the door.
00:36:39
Speaker
Right. Yeah. Do you recognize the guy who... No, but he's really weird looking. He's very weird looking. He plays another tiny role in Friends in one scene.
00:36:53
Speaker
Oh, have we already seen it? We have not. You know, when you just suddenly can't remember where in the world, um like certain episodes are, let me just double check very quickly. Da-da-da-da. Oh, my This is terrible podcasting again.
00:37:18
Speaker
ah Here. Let me talk about... No, it is season 10. I knew it was later on, but i wanted to make sure. and We see him in season 10.
00:37:28
Speaker
He, I believe, i believe it's this scene at Estelle's funeral. He's the guy that eats paper. It's the same actor that plays them both. Excellent. Yes. Because I was like, I know that face and that voice. Like it's, it's peculiar.
00:37:46
Speaker
Okay. His voice wasn't what was peculiar. It was his mouth. Right. Yeah. Like, I don't know. a interesting interesting yeah same same extra um well mrs potter tells rick that his uh his or tells phoebe that his wife has called three times wondering where he is and uh rick's been caught red-handed at this point yeah not a good move rick um
00:38:18
Speaker
So let's see, we go from there into the girls' apartment. Chandler and Ross end up coming in with a joint checking account. It's just getting worse and worse. They're going use it to pay for the gym, though. So that's I think that's kind of fantastic.
00:38:34
Speaker
And while they're kind of lamenting over that, Phoebe comes in and announces she has been fired. um Yeah, she did things you can't do as a masseuse. And then ended up walking around the streets asking people if they want a massage.
00:38:50
Speaker
Again, probably not it's a great move. Yeah, and then some policemen. And then that just didn't go. It's just a bad day. Yes, it's so funny. Just so funny. and It's like, what in the world?
00:39:07
Speaker
Well, there you go. Poor old Phoebe. Yeah. But Triga shows up. He's going to take... We're going to have one more lesson. But Triga has an idea, which I just... I love this, where this story goes now. They end up going up to the roof. They need some more room.
00:39:27
Speaker
And there's something kind of... It's not really romantic. It's just wholesome. It's a throwback with the kind of steam coming off the roof. you know the Yes. Whatever pipes it is on the roof.
00:39:40
Speaker
Yes. um they managed they nailed the dance. Whatever one is they're doing, they it's just Trigger's ready. He's ready to go and get the bus and go and find Marge.
00:39:51
Speaker
But he's not going to leave Joey behind. Marge has a girlfriend that's about his size. And so Joey politely declines. Okay.
00:40:02
Speaker
Yes. Two questions. So whenever they were dancing, that was the Foxtrot. Okay. hey and Okay. um But the song, and here's the deal. Do you do you know who sings the song I mean, I don't, so I would just throw out like Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra. Okay, which, there you go. You're 100% correct. Okay. So it's Frank s Sinatra singing, but it was written by Sammy Davis Jr. and Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.
00:40:33
Speaker
Okay. Okay, and the Rat Pack, right? I feel like we've talked about them before. We definitely have, and I don't remember what context, but we definitely have. I don't remember either, and I know, though, I feel like it has to have been the background of another song on another episode.
00:40:54
Speaker
But anyway, I just, I thought that that was a fun little thing. Yeah, just another. Because the song is called Night and Day. Right. And you obviously know that, like, from the song. However, there is a more famous Night and Day song from the same era.
00:41:14
Speaker
And it is... um Sammy Davis Jr. Okay. And who did I say a minute ago that helped? Not Sammy Davis Jr. Who's the blind the blind guy?
00:41:27
Speaker
Ray Charles? Yes. yeah That's the other song, Night and Day. Okay. It's by him. And it's one that if you hear it, you're like, oh, yeah, I've heard that in a lot of things. and But this one is just another fun song. So, anyway, that's all.
00:41:45
Speaker
Yeah, I just loved it. I just loved the change of scenery, being up on the roof. We're only there now and again. Yes, and it's so good. It's just good. And it's good dancing.
00:41:57
Speaker
Right. they do They both do a great job. And then Joey kind of dancing by himself at the very end, like on the roof. He's he's obviously really enjoying it.
00:42:09
Speaker
um The final scene of this episode, what did you say this place was called? laura Laura and Jen. Laura and Jen, the massage. I'm not convinced this is not Estelle's office, just redressed. It's like, okay, I thought the same thing. Okay, right.
00:42:28
Speaker
I sure did because of the window and yeah, and the door and everything else. Yeah. Yeah, I didn't look it didn't look it up, but I thought it just looks very similar to Estelle's office, which I adore. um Phoebe's too honest in the interview when she ah when she's asked why she left her last job.
00:42:48
Speaker
And she gets the kiss of death in an interview when, ah you know, we'll call you if something comes up. Yeah. And and that's that's probably not going to go well.
00:43:00
Speaker
um I think we can safely assume... I think that, yeah, somebody probably should have coached her. That's probably not why, or that's probably a better way to say the way reason that you left your last job.
00:43:16
Speaker
Maybe. Yep. I think so. do You can just say, yeah, just come up with something a bit more neutral. Yeah, absolutely. Well, that's the that's the end of this episode. That was the final scene this week. Um,
00:43:33
Speaker
Let's think, who would be your Gunther Central Park? Easy, Joey. Yep. Yeah, just a funny, great friends. Timing was on point, and it just he just his awesomeness was really on display.
00:43:51
Speaker
I couldn't agree more. they Instinctively, I get, or something, I want to give it to Trigger because I just like him, but but the fact is, Joey outshines him in this one for me. I think it's just because we don't see Mr. Trigger too often and I like his character, but yeah, Joey, good friend to Rachel, then a good friend to Monica, and then a good friend to Mr. Trigger as well. So, yeah, definitely. um Let's think how are going to measure it this week? don't know. Bicep curls or checkbooks or I don't know. membership cards? Just gym membership cards.
00:44:33
Speaker
memory Yes. Oh, we have a suggestion from Kate. Let's hear it. Dancing shoes. Dancing shoes. How many pairs of dancing shoes? Because then if we want to do a half, we could. nice. Okay. Okay. Well, I do not have a half, but it is.
00:44:53
Speaker
How about eight pairs of dancing shoes? Eight pairs of dancing shoes. Well, we've come in again, i think, with the same Gunther Central part and the same rating. Dang! Yeah, I think that's two weeks in a row we have tied Bamboozled and then the same ratings. Oh my goodness. I really like the dancing storyline.
00:45:16
Speaker
Outside of that, it's kind of... like There's funny moments, but the rest of it, for me, there's nothing much happening there. But I just like... all the dancing, all the stuff with Trigger and Joey. I think that's just superb. um All right. Next week, next week, I do know what this one is and it starts a fairly big storyline that goes on for a few episodes, I think. um It's the one with Joey's new girlfriend. Oh.
00:45:50
Speaker
And this is, a her name is suddenly going to up my head. is it Kathy? Kathy yes I'm sure that next week is where Kathy enters the picture okay yeah so we'll have to dig into dig into that Paget Brewster right that's who plays Kathy who went on yeah she starred in ah in a Criminal Minds for years and years I think oh yeah yeah yeah okay I think that's her isn't it
00:46:22
Speaker
um So yeah, we'll get stuck into the one with Joey's new girlfriend next week. Any final thoughts as we wrap up this week's episode? Um, no.
00:46:34
Speaker
Uh, mm. Yay, gym memberships, because now now i want to join a gym. So there you go. There you go. You want to join the gym. I'm going to think about it.
00:46:47
Speaker
I'm going to give myself 24 hours before I purchase. I think that's a great decision. Great decision. Trying to be more responsible with my spending. Good for you. Good for you. Thanks. All right We will be back next week with the one with Joey's new girlfriend. But as always, thank you, everybody, for listening to the Purple Door podcast.
