Introduction & Episode Overview

00:00:04
Speaker
Well, hello and lo welcome to this week's episode of the Purple Door Podcast, a friend's rewatch pod. I'm one of your hosts, Alistair, alongside Deanne. Deanne, how are you today?
00:00:15
Speaker
I'm an awesome, Al. I'm awesome. Fantastic. You know what? Go ahead. just thankful i have not been stung by a jellyfish. Me too. Me too. I've thought quite lot about the jellyfish since we talked last I've seen them. I've seen them on the beach, but i like you, never been stung.
00:00:35
Speaker
Yes, but are you going to carry meat tenderizer in your beach bag from now on? You know what? If nothing else, I'm going to carry it so I can send you and your good husband a photograph of me posing with it on the beach like men do with with sharks when they go deep sea fishing. Yes.
00:00:54
Speaker
That is going to happen with a Costco-sized meat tenderizer photograph is coming to the Woolison household. Excellent. Yes. Excellent. Well, we're going from jellyfish to a more domestic animal this week. It is the one with the cat, Season 4,

Trivia Game Part 1

00:01:14
Speaker
Episode 2. And as always, we're going to start off with some bamboozled trivia. It is an even one. and And every week I think, oh, this is easy, I've remembered. I think because it's even, that means it's me.
00:01:30
Speaker
Yes, sir. Yes. All right. Take me to season four. We're slowly getting there. I'll forget next week, but we're locked in today.
00:01:40
Speaker
My first question for you is what is the name of the cereal Joey is eating in the opening scene? Okay. It looks just like Captain Crunch. It does. does not say that at all.
00:01:57
Speaker
And I wish I would have gone back and read that box because it's like lots of crunch or something like that. You are so close. Am I?
00:02:09
Speaker
then I should have gone back and I didn't. So. The answer is love that crunch. Dang it. Yeah, you were. That that was close.
00:02:21
Speaker
Wow. Okay. This one's pretty easy. So you say? Oh, no. I feel like I shouldn't even ask it because I, what's the cat's real name?
00:02:40
Speaker
It's the wonderful Julio. Yes. so I it. Julio, get the stretch. I love it. they And again, we need to, one of these days we'll get in touch with somebody behind the scenes. There's a repetition of names and it's like, and yeah. talk about Julio a lot.
00:02:59
Speaker
Yeah. This time it's Julio the cat. Yep. Yes. All right. So my question too for you is where did Monica initially run into Chip?
00:03:12
Speaker
Oh, at the bank. Yes. you are You are off the mark here. All right. Excellent. All right. What is Chandler drinking in Central Park?
00:03:24
Speaker
Oh, that's a great question. Cause that, and that you could be a, like it could be a bluff here, but that tells me it's, Oh, you know what? It's not you. hoop but I remember it being something I swear was unusual.
00:03:42
Speaker
ah what could it have been? And it wasn't just coffee. It must have been No, I can't think. i'm trying to think what else it could like plausibly be. It's not going to be a glass of water. It's not going to be a glass of milk. it's again Is it just a bottle of water?
00:04:02
Speaker
No. All right. What was it? It was an espresso. Because he's got the tiny cup. Oh, he's got the tiny cup. Yes. Yes, he does. That's different because everybody always has the big, either the big coffee mug or the big cappuccino mug. Yes. And he had a tiny espresso cup.
00:04:22
Speaker
That's right. Ah, yes. All right. My question three for you. and I'll need ah just a little detail here that's given in the episode. What kind of wood is the entertainment unit made out of?
00:04:37
Speaker
Is it oak? It is. It's the finest oak ah east of the Mississippi. Indeed it is. Yeah, it is. That's the detail. Good Italian craftsmanship. It's so good. So good.
00:04:54
Speaker
All right. So Chandler is drinking espresso from the tiny little espresso cup. What color is Joey's mug?
00:05:11
Speaker
Is it dark blue? No, but the one sitting on the table in front of the couch is. Okay, that must be it. I was thinking of the mugs, and thought, I remember seeing a dark blue mug.
00:05:24
Speaker
Yeah. Okay. Well, Joey, do you want me to tell you or do you want to guess? No, you just tell me. I didn't get it. Oh, okay. It was yellow. and he was Yellow. hello mag Yellow mug. Well, speaking of Joey, how much did the newspaper ad cost him? $300. $300. You are on a roll.
00:05:46
Speaker
Yes, $300. All right. Now, this one's kind of hard, but I feel like it's going to be fine. Because you get a point

Trivia Game Part 2

00:05:56
Speaker
if you get either size or the actual number. Okay. But how many people from high school does Chip Matthews still hang out with? And you can't catch count the wedgie guy.
00:06:09
Speaker
Yeah, that would be we can't that'd be terrible. We can't do that. That would be terrible because they are not hanging out. I will tell you in my notes, I've written all the names down and had to rewind that scene like seven times, but I'm not going to look and I'm going to guess. Okay, I've said seven in my head, but I think it might be a tiny bit more. Six, Could be six or seven. yeah I'm going with eight though. Eight is my answer.
00:06:39
Speaker
Okay, so it's 11. Oh, I missed several. 11. Dang.
00:06:45
Speaker
well, that's... ah that's a Yeah, I'm going to have a look at those names. That's a great question. that's a No, that's a great question. I mean, like said, I wrote down all the names or most of the names at some point.
00:06:59
Speaker
um My favorite question, because I just noticed this this when I was looking for something else. What does the Magna Doodle say when Chandler comes in to discover they've been robbed?
00:07:12
Speaker
I have no idea. don't know. It says, thanks for all your stuff. Wow. Right.
00:07:23
Speaker
Dang. Yeah. I thought that was that was a ton of fun. Wow. All right. So in the opening scene, whenever they're going back and forth and he says, well, you know,
00:07:41
Speaker
what are you going to tell them? And he opens it up and the chicken, the duck are inside of the cabinet. Yes. Name two things that are in there with them. Okay. There's um the little set of almost like the Christmas lights, different colored lights. And there's a disco ball. Nice.
00:08:02
Speaker
Yes. I know there's a few other things, but I can't quite picture what they are. Yeah. But the little disco ball is amazing. I just so much fun. Well, we are ah continuing where we left off a resounding three, two victory for you in this week's, this, this week's episode. So I've still got some work to do.
00:08:25
Speaker
um It appears. No, I was, it was a, that was fun though. Those I've got one, think one extra. Yeah, I've got one extra and then I did just scribble down the names of the what the the people from high school I heard.
00:08:41
Speaker
um Let's see. My extra one for you is what two items does the thief initially steal?
00:08:50
Speaker
Oh, I think we have lost Wilson temporarily. So we are back. And I was asking, dia what two items did the thief initially steal? yeah.
00:09:03
Speaker
It was a stereo and Chandler's computer. Indeed it was. Yes. Yeah. Yep. Yep. Okay.
00:09:15
Speaker
Do you have any extra for me? We're just playing. Oh, yeah, I do. i do Okay. What is Chip Matthews phone number? Oh, it's in my notes. I'm not going to look. It's something like.
00:09:32
Speaker
it's funny like i feel like i can almost picture on the phone something like 555 definitely yes then like like 6263 oh close yeah how yeah about 9323 ah there we go yeah sort of close sort of not but that's it yeah and then just for fun how many people can you name the chip went to high school with Oh. Maybe none. It's something that starts with a Z. i think it's Zana. Right? And then he sees Goldie sometimes. Yep. And then there's, what, Spindler or something like that. Yep, Spindler. that's You got three. That's pretty that's pretty good going.
00:10:19
Speaker
And then there's... And I've got them in my notes. Yeah. um
00:10:29
Speaker
Is there somebody Robbins? There is. There's a Simmons. i think that's the closest one. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know.
00:10:40
Speaker
i don't know who else. Yeah. It became just that people it became as a challenge to to get them 11 to be exact. 11. not Richard Dorfman because that doesn't count.
00:10:55
Speaker
yeah

Trivia Game Finale & Episode Reflection

00:10:56
Speaker
hes He is not on my list. yeah all right hey I have one for you. all right yes How many pages is the report that Rachel has to read?
00:11:07
Speaker
But she's afraid she might fall asleep. Okay. So it's it's shorter than that the front and back. 18 pages front and back my head says eight but i don't know if they'd go from 18 to eight it is eight okay head yeah trust it trust the gut all right yes okay and then i have one more wonderful all right how much would they get if they returned julio
00:11:40
Speaker
$200 split five ways. Nice. Very good. Yes. Yeah. There we go. All right. um Yeah. not not not I like these questions. i don't know what I don't know what it is about certain episodes. I feel we get good questions.
00:11:56
Speaker
Yeah. Right, let's get stuck into this. We start off in the boy's apartment. Chandler leaves his room and rips the arm of his suit. Oh, we're going to have a small technical issue.
00:12:10
Speaker
yeah And we are back. yeah Chandler rips his the suit sleeve as he he fails to turn and slide. um Yes. Fails to turn and slide. What does he say? like, wow, that That was so nice. It was that pause there. It made me laugh. was like, oh my gosh, how frustrating.
00:12:34
Speaker
You know? Yeah, Joey is just just like, you're just turned and slide. like it's It's obvious that that's what you should do. Yeah, sorry. Joey is very unbothered by by what's happening. It's an easy solution. Turn slide.
00:12:54
Speaker
Yes. Well, and it kind of makes me laugh because, you know, later in the episode, whenever they take out the cabinet and everything, you can see that Chandler's door is still cut completely. Yes. Yeah. bit I'm surprised he's just, he has, he's going to have to replace it at some point. They rent this place. So at some point that door will need to be repaired. It's it's funny. He hasn't done it yet. Yeah. um but chandler does say you throw it out and joey's like no i can't i built that thing with my own hands and uh chandler comes up with a creative solution of selling it which joey reluctantly agrees to well after you gotta tell them the chicken the duck yeah that you're gonna do you mind we take you in another cabinet
00:13:48
Speaker
ah They're okay with it or whatever. Yeah, yeah. It's so well said. I'll tell you at the end and tell our listeners at the end, I did find out the whole premise of this storyline. There's a reason that the apartment so suffered a thievery and a robbery. It was deliberately done for a particular reason. So if I forget, remind me to share that bit of information.
00:14:15
Speaker
Okay. We go to the girls' and apartment. Yeah, it was surprising to me. We go over to the girls' apartment, and as you said, we found out that Chip, his phone number, 555-9323, had left a voicemail for Monica after they'd bumped into each other at the bank. um The way she talks is is brilliantly done. you know The way she talks to listens to Chip on the phone, rather, like ah ah ah yeah a just smitten.
00:14:43
Speaker
oh yeah they had the best conversation oh gosh and then oh it's so painful it was so painful to watch uh the whole ross and rachel bit oh gosh it was it was painful i was so embarrassed for her Tell me something. I've got this in my notes later on, but I think it should come up here. I can't figure out if Rachel is really mad with Ross or if they're just kind of like she's kind of mad at him but still loves him.
00:15:19
Speaker
Like, I don't know. I can't quite figure out what emotion she is portraying towards Ross um because it's almost like they're kind of playing with each other. like I don't know. i It was a thought I had later on in the episode and I feel like we kind of see here a little bit too.
00:15:38
Speaker
oh I'd be curious as to what you think later on. yeah i think it is brilliantly done. that oh that's right. He called Monica. That's going to be embarrassing. Yeah. Well, and and he tries.
00:15:55
Speaker
He tries to let her off. Right? Because he's like, well, actually, and then she cuts him off. And he's, you know, I wonder.
00:16:05
Speaker
and she's yeah just trying to make him jealous. Right? That's interesting that you say that. And I'm going to have to process that. And we'll talk about it later. but Yeah.
00:16:19
Speaker
Yeah. Because he's like. Yeah, because he tries to tell her. He's like, well, actually, because he's going to tell her that Chip actually was calling Monica. And then she just kind of takes a dig at him.
00:16:36
Speaker
oh Yeah. And, um yeah, and now... That was funny. Hang on. I'm sorry. Oh, you're fine. Yeah, I just, I'd be interested. Yeah, just, I couldn't figure out. It was like they weren't still together, but mad at each other or something, just the way they interacted. I don't know.
00:16:55
Speaker
Yeah.

Episode Highlights Discussion

00:16:56
Speaker
To me. um we go to send, oh, sorry, go ahead. you He's just so petty. i Oh, yeah. minute Oh, that's all right. He was calling to ask out Monica. Yeah.
00:17:10
Speaker
that that's gotta to be embarrassing like yeah ah it's funny because it is it's like kind of classic ross in a lot of ways but he gets kind of a pass because he did try to tell her uh-huh it's like well she wouldn't listen to him i don't know it's uh it was treats her like he would monica because he yeah totally would have done that to monica absolutely you know yeah to be a jerk a jerky brother Yeah. but
00:17:41
Speaker
Yeah. We go to Central Park. Phoebe is playing. And before we get into the whole scene, it did get me wondering, what was the last thing you bought off? Nobody buys anything at the newspaper anymore, but say Facebook Marketplace.
00:17:58
Speaker
I'm not sure if you frequent that too much. I do not. Right. I really don't. um I know last summer I was looking for a,
00:18:13
Speaker
and like a ah float to pull behind the boat. Yeah. That I ended up destroying during the snowstorm this last year. It's fine. Yeah.
00:18:29
Speaker
The last thing that I bought. Yeah, I don't know. Fred recently bought ah electric, um, skateboard so that was pretty cool that's fun yeah it seems so dangerous it's got a remote control so like he was on it and i was driving him and that's so terrifying that's that's kind of wild to be somebody else controlling it yeah yeah for sure and then he got off of it whatever handed it to george so
00:19:06
Speaker
Right. that just Okay. and What about you guys? cause you know so i we do like We go through phases of like, you know, we're we're looking for one or two particular things, so we will...
00:19:20
Speaker
um look on the I will say what I was going to buy a few weeks ago um was a set of headphones. I've always bought cheap headphones. These ones are $5 headphones. But I really wanted to get a decent pair for listening to podcasts and music and all of that. So I was looking at like beats on Facebook Marketplace, seeing if I could find some that were... cheap, but my wonderful bride surprised me at graduation with a ah brand new pair. so so
00:19:55
Speaker
So I was looking for a few weeks trying to fit where i pull the trigger while I do this. And she ends up getting, I do get, ah ah I've gotten a decent amount of camping stuff from there. That's, you know, people are cleaning out their garage and just want rid of all of it. I go and often I'll get some outdoor stuff. um But Joey, he's put ad in the paper, selling the unit. As you said, that there's the finest oak east of the Mississippi, his Italian craftsmanship, um all of that, $5,000.
00:20:29
Speaker
Yeah. But where did you get the finest oak east of the Mississippi? nah ah Not until you tell us where you got the prettiest lake in all the land. Oh, my gosh. It's Geppetto, the lines from Chandler in this scene. Yeah.
00:20:54
Speaker
Chandler's going to change it to $50. So it's going down to 1% of the price um or best offer. Well, and if you really want to...
00:21:04
Speaker
Think about that. They're actually going to paying 250 because he paid 300 for the ad. Right. And again, you kind of translate that into today's money. and mean, I don't know what that is going to be, but it's five, $600 at least, I would think. That's an expensive ad yeah to run. today, like,
00:21:26
Speaker
um call so yeah yeah but today like That would have been the only way. Like, you're not going to have Facebook marketplace. or craig Is Craigslist even still a thing?
00:21:41
Speaker
So, I remember I looked at it like a year ago or so, and it still existed. i have no idea if you know what the popularity is these days. Yeah. um But it' it does still exist.
00:21:54
Speaker
it's somehow Somehow, it still exists. Yeah. I think they had a great business model. I remember reading a thing about it a few years ago. Their overhead and all that was so low and it was so popular.
00:22:06
Speaker
And I don't really know how they made money. I'm sure they had banner ads and things, but they only had like a few employees and stuff. Like it was, um yes, it's just a a model that others should have looked at apparently.

Central Park Scenes & Character Humor

00:22:21
Speaker
Well, you go. So go ahead. Isn't this,
00:22:25
Speaker
probably one of the very first times that that joke pops up where nobody knows what Chandler does for a living I did wonder if this was the first time okay because this is the first time that we've really like we've seen Chandler's office we know that they do things we know about weenuses and all of these different things and but this is really the first time i think where everybody's like i i don't know what you do yeah nobody knows and i do love that that's a running thread throughout the the whole series yeah transponder that's oh that's that's one of the best one-liners yeah rachel yelling that even a word
00:23:17
Speaker
Well, he doesn't call himself him i wast an accountant, a mathematician. but was this What does he call him Yeah, he goes, and you call yourself an accountant. And he's like, no. No, I don't.
00:23:30
Speaker
um and This is the moment where the cat runs into Central Park and kind of sniffs around Phoebe's a guitar case. She picks him up and she feels a connection, a higher force, some sort of energy spirit and believes that this her mom.
00:23:47
Speaker
do i have a missing scene uh yes it sure is okay because she freaks out like it is a whole thing where she's like freaking out about this cat inside and gunther comes over as she goes she's like gunther there's i a cat inside of my uh guitar case and he goes be quiet or else everybody will want one. And then he smiles and laughs at his own joke and then walks off. That's brilliant.
00:24:22
Speaker
And so then she's like, oh my God. And then that's it pops up with her going, get out, get out, you know? And then she picks him up. That's fantastic. Yeah. That's completely cut. She just picks him up. Yeah. And immediately has this bond with the cat. Yeah.
00:24:42
Speaker
I feel like i need to or we need to get like ah a buzzer or a bell or a gong or something that you can hit whenever I skip over a bit that you have that I didn't. Whoa! I've got a buzzer on my desk. I'm going to have to remember to bring it home. Yeah, yeah something like that I think is going to be required for as we upgrade the podcast. We're going to need something. We go up to the girls' apartment and Rachel...
00:25:07
Speaker
confronts Monica by going out with Chip Matthews. I do like Monica's response to what are you going to tell me now? um and Rachel's Rachel's is upset too strong of a word in the beginning, um with Monica, but I think she quickly finds out or figures out that, you know, Monica is coming from a good place. They went to different high schools, even though they went to the same high school.
00:25:34
Speaker
And I think Rachel very quickly comes to the the right conclusion. And it's kind of sweet, actually. It is. In my opinion. It's like, oh, okay.
00:25:47
Speaker
I don't know. i don't know. i guess it doesn't matter, right? Like, what does it matter? yeah it's been that long and it was high school and all that kind of stuff yeah like who cares yeah but um yeah i don't know i was gonna ask you what was the girl's name that he cheated on rachel with i've got that i i don't know if i would remember but it was amy welsh or welch
00:26:18
Speaker
Welch, like our friend Sarah. Like our friend Sarah Welch. Shout out to Sarah Welch, one of the best teachers and human beings there is. Dude, and I got the best picture of her and Fred whenever they did the the senior walk.
00:26:34
Speaker
She took her day off and she came to Belle and watched that group of kids walk. And it was sweet. And like Fred is overwhelmed with gratitude.
00:26:48
Speaker
for her love that amazing teacher i love it that's just so good but um no relation to our sarah no no not a relative of amy welch definitely not definitely um because sarah well yes sarah would have kept amy in line i think oh um We stay in the girls' apartment and um people have been calling. I love this so much. I don't know why. But people have been calling about the entertainment center. But Joey doesn't think it's going to work out because not everyone's qualified to own wood and nails.
00:27:28
Speaker
um I think it's just a fantastic line. Oh, I may have lost Wilson again. Oh, are you there? No, I'm here. okay I'm sorry. I'm trying to figure gear out.
00:27:40
Speaker
why i put this in my notes. Well, I will finish this little bit while you finish that off and then jump in. um Yeah, Joey apparently has ah a very high bar, a screening process for people who are going to purchase this entertainment center.
00:27:56
Speaker
um Phoebe still has the cat. And this is where this was the moment I kind of felt that Rachel isn't so mad at Ross as she's almost... playing with them or toying with them because she kind of messes with them about having to be right and ends up with the line about Jurassic Park could happen. And I'm not saying that I'm right with that. It's just, I couldn't quite figure out where it landed.
00:28:22
Speaker
Okay.

Joey's Entertainment Unit & Robbery Twist

00:28:23
Speaker
So, and here is something got cut right here too. Okay. So something got cut earlier because I put in my notes, Monnie cow. And that's nowhere in, like, that's nowhere in the script.
00:28:38
Speaker
So that, I don't remember why I wrote that down. but Right. But whatever. Yeah. Okay, but in this scene, whenever they're going back and forth, ah back and forth, and she's like, you know, maybe you you just have to always be right.
00:28:56
Speaker
Like, don't start and all that. Yeah. And then he's like, I don't always have to be and okay okay. And then she says, Jurassic Park could happen.
00:29:09
Speaker
Yes. And he looks at her and he smiles and he shakes his head and he says nothing. So then she goes, you know, Kirk is... actually I've always thought Kirk is smarter than Spock.
00:29:23
Speaker
And then that's whenever he just kind of starts to say something and then turns around and walks out the door. And then... As soon as he leaves, and then she kind of giggles to herself, and then Chandler says to her, you're just kidding about that, about the Kirk and Spock thing, right?
00:29:46
Speaker
Right. And that's not here at all. No mention of Star Trek. and this is it like I feel like Ross is almost trying to leave and Rachel keeps messing with him to keep his attention. If she was genuinely mad at him and done, I don't think she'd be doing that. She would just be kind of silent, hoping he leaves.
00:30:09
Speaker
Yeah, but she is not. She is not. She's trying to hook him back in. That's what I'm i'm thinking here. um We go over to the boys' apartment and it's two guys have come over who offer to trade a canoe. I love that they're in the same situation. You got to take the canoe.
00:30:28
Speaker
um And then Chandler tries to just give them the unit and throw the canoe out. But the guy who built the canoe is there. And Joey, of course, yeah, you was whatever he says, like, stay strong. yeah Good for you Good for you. And he just walks out.
00:30:46
Speaker
um And we'll talk ah we'll talk about the canoe at the end. But that's it's worth more than the entertainment center. Oh, yeah. Yeah. And you got two oars.
00:30:57
Speaker
Right. Yeah, that thing's a work of art. um We go back to Central Park. Rachel has found the missing cat poster. The cat's name, as we discussed in Bamboozled, is Julio. There's a $200 reward.
00:31:12
Speaker
um The one thing that jumped out to me this season is Ross is going for dinner with Ben. and We just don't hear about Ben for most of a season, i think. Yeah.
00:31:23
Speaker
I couldn't tell you when Ben's name was last mentioned. Yeah, I don't know. I think they may have forgot. No, you know what? Okay, whenever the ski trip.
00:31:34
Speaker
Oh, that's true. Yeah, Carol Susan. Yeah. ah ah But yeah, I don't feel confident that that and we've heard about him since then. Yeah, maybe once or twice this entire season. I think you're right. yeah um Phoebe comes in with the cat and they all kind of try to tell her, but nobody can even start and with the flyer. um The one thing that just jumped out at them I thought was odd was Monica calling Joey Joe.
00:32:07
Speaker
Like, I don't think anyone ever calls him Joe. Maybe they do. Now I'm saying it out loud. But she kind of goes, what was that, Joe? I'll be right there. when she's sitting on the i don't know why just yeah add odd she doesn't want to tell phoebe yes yeah when she she doesn't want to be the one joe channel says joe that's right you time that's right he does um yes a state joe freakin yeah yeah you're right um
00:32:41
Speaker
let's I don't know. Again, another line that kind of lives in my head if I ever see the words not yet. We're in the girls' apartment. There's a knock at the door and then Monica shoots along the back. Not yet, not yet, not yet, not yet. um Again, no real reason, but it cracks me up, that line.
00:33:00
Speaker
Yes. Whenever she runs by, was her hair done? You know, i don't know if it was done. From what I recall, she had like a... Towel or something. Yeah, some kind of towel. and So she she must have been must have gotten ready really quickly in the bedroom, I would imagine.
00:33:20
Speaker
Yeah, I don't know. That doesn't seem right. No, and she's so organized and on top of things. Yeah. um But Chip shows up and Rachel immediately acts really weird at the door. She's like overcompensating.
00:33:35
Speaker
oh yeah. Yeah. Trying let him know what a great life she now has. um And he's just... asks about amy welch yes Yeah, so she takes him a second and then he kind of goes, is Monica ready? Moving on. Yeah.
00:33:56
Speaker
Dork. Yeah. Yeah, and then it's the unfortunate entertainment. Yeah, we're back in the boy's apartment. Joey is trying to sell the unit to this guy. Tells he can fit in it. His roommate bet him five bucks. The roommate's not buying it.
00:34:14
Speaker
They shake on taking $5 off the price if Joey can't. And yeah, Joey climbs in and this guy immediately grabs the hockey stick, locks him in.
00:34:27
Speaker
What's he steal? What do we see? The the stereo and the laptop. um He goes, now I'm trying not to be like... you know, pull the magic away, but there's no back on the entertainment center.
00:34:41
Speaker
So couldn't Joey have just like, yeah, everything would have smashed the wall. Yeah. Push against the wall. You know, yeah was my thought. Um, better to have everything kind of smash and bump your head, but not get robbed.
00:34:57
Speaker
Um, you know, yeah, mean but that thing, it must be really, really

Phoebe's Reincarnation Belief & Emotional Layers

00:35:03
Speaker
heavy. Right. Yeah, it did take, what, like four or five of them to lift it. Yeah, so I don't know if you'd be able to leverage enough to knock it over. That's true. But I bet you could at least break the door, right? ah The only thing that's making me second-guess this is, you know he's probably in there really cramped, so he doesn't have much...
00:35:28
Speaker
you know, room to maneuver when he's, he is locked in the cabinet. But yeah, I think he could have somehow gone out. Um, yeah just my thought, um, we go down to the street and this is where we see Monica and chip together.
00:35:44
Speaker
Um, she gets a lipper from chipper. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, gross. Yeah. he's he's He's just a kind of icky human being. Yeah. I mean, nothing wrong with him, I guess, but just just not somebody I would enjoy spending any time with.
00:36:02
Speaker
No. You know, he's basically exactly the same guy as Monica says, in as he was in high school. hasn't Hasn't changed at all. um We end up back at the boys apartment and Chandler comes in and sees that they've been robbed. Again, to me, it's kind of iconic when he throws the keys and they just they just hit the floor and it takes it takes him a second to realize what's happening.
00:36:30
Speaker
And then it's like, what, what, what? Yeah. it' just I do love that the first thing Chandler does is, are you all right? You know, he um he wants to know that Joey is okay, even though all of his stuff is, um all of his stuff is gone.
00:36:50
Speaker
Well, because you would think, you would think that somebody made him get in Right. Yeah. You would think that this is not a good.
00:37:03
Speaker
oh yeah. Okay, wait. No, I would. It was the next thing. No, you're fine. You're like a hostage, almost. Like he's been locked in there. and Yeah.
00:37:17
Speaker
yeah But then he says and he said he didn't think it was big enough to fit a grown man. and he's like, wait a minute, you got in there voluntarily? Right. Oh, he's so mad.
00:37:31
Speaker
Oh, he i mean, and I get like, he's, yeah, livid. As he should be. um We do find out, I think, in the next scene that they don't have renter's insurance.
00:37:42
Speaker
um Nope, that's not the next scene. We go into we go to Dot. i was going ask you the name of the restaurant. Okay, that's what I was just going to say. then I was like, oh wait, no, this is right after that.
00:37:55
Speaker
Yeah, if we go to, was it Dot Spot? Yes. And then, gross. It's just. Like dating an 18 year old, I think. Yeah. I mean, the whole thing. Oh, I can stay. I'm staying. What's he say? Like I live my parents' basement, but can stay out as late as I want.
00:38:13
Speaker
Yeah. and Yeah. ah Because she says, yeah, because he's like, well, you know where I work. Yeah. you're A bunch of times. You get me popcorn and candy and I can get your posters.
00:38:27
Speaker
Yeah. She's like, do you still live with your parents? And he's like, yeah, but I can stay out as late as I want. It's so icky. It's just. Yeah. It's sad.
00:38:38
Speaker
yeah I feel for him. Yeah. Yeah. And then there's this scene, like there's a little bit that was cut out of here where he's telling her another story about one of his friends who went out with a girl and got to third base.
00:38:54
Speaker
And she's just like, and that's, he's telling her about that. And then she asks him, do you still live with your parents? And he's like, yeah, but I can stay out as late as I want. And then she drinks her drink, you know?
00:39:11
Speaker
Yeah. Have you ever seen, um ah you must have seen, we must have talked about Napoleon Dynamite. Oh, yes. And I love it, though. i yeah i love it. He does remind me of Uncle Rico a little bit. This guy who peaked in high school.
00:39:28
Speaker
Oh, yeah. He's just kind of never moved on. And Chip Matthews kind of gives me... like He'll end up being that guy who, when he's 40, still talks about his high school football career and all of that.
00:39:41
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Making videos of himself throwing a football in the desert. Yeah. Yeah, it kind just gives me those vibes a little bit. For sure. We find out in the boys' apartment the thieves have taken the, I think it said the TV and the microwave. Phoebe and Rachel are both in there with them. I mean, they've took taken a bunch of other stuff as well, of course, but I think those get mentioned.
00:40:06
Speaker
um Monica comes in and Rachel asks how the date went and she says that, you know what, she got to dump Chip Matthews, which I think is the best way this whole thing could have worked out.
00:40:19
Speaker
Everyone, wait well, not Chip, but both Monica and Rachel, that situation closes where they're both feeling really good. Yeah. And it's sweet, you know? It is. Yeah. Yeah.
00:40:34
Speaker
And then that's whenever we find out there is no insurance. So stop calling you. I don't know why you keep calling me. It seems so out of character for Chandler to me to not have, you know, renter's insurance or, so or so you know, somehow his stuff covered, you know, living in Manhattan, all of that, you know, you're surrounded by people.
00:41:00
Speaker
You would think that he would have had that, but apparently not. um Ross comes in at that point and shows Phoebe the flyer that shows the Julio the cat. It's a,
00:41:14
Speaker
what it say, a garland Soho, I think, is missing her cat. um Phoebe kind of gives a little pushback, right? Says that she should respect the cat's decision. Yeah, and then they're all like, yep.
00:41:29
Speaker
except yeah Except for Ross. Yeah, and even when Ross is kind of in the right, he still feels like he's in the wrong sometimes. Yeah, well, she makes them, and it's I think it's a legit thing, right?
00:41:43
Speaker
Yeah. Because she's right. Like you have no idea how she feels. Right. So be a little softer with her, a little more gentle.
00:41:55
Speaker
This is a a tough situation for Phoebe, especially given the news she just found out about her birth mom the previous week. Yeah. um Or two weeks ago. Ross does end up apologizing to Julio, which is is is a great scene. Yeah, it is. And I love that it's, and Rachel, it's just her poking at him. again, right? She's not mad at him. she's just She's just kind of irritated and wants to needle limb and I think... right yeah Because he embarrassed her earlier the shit Matthews thing, right? yes and then And so it's like, yeah, apologize to Phoebe's mom.
00:42:37
Speaker
You know? And so he does because it's the right thing to do. But... Yeah, you know i know, it's the right thing to do, to be a good friend. It really, you know, like, what's it matter to you?
00:42:55
Speaker
But it means a lot to her. It means a lot to her. That's what counts. But you that it's killing him because... you know The spirit is not inside of the cat and that does not track with him at all. No, no. it' ah Yeah, it goes against everything he believes, I think. um One

Canoe Scene & Production Insights

00:43:18
Speaker
of my favorite lines. Oh, sorry. Go ahead. No, go ahead. Go ahead. Oh, it's one of my favorite lines of the whole episode is ah and ah how he says it exactly. as a Phoebe, if your mom could come back as a couch, we'd really appreciate it. Yes.
00:43:31
Speaker
Oh, God.
00:43:34
Speaker
It's so well-timed. Yes. Okay. Did you notice while... um Wait. Hang on.
00:43:45
Speaker
No. While he's talking to the cat, did you notice what the cat was doing?
00:43:53
Speaker
No, I know it was on top of the entertainment center. um No, I don't think I did. Yeah, I was... I don't know why, but i was, like, laser focused while Ross was um talking along to her, you know, saying Buffet, blah, blah, blah.
00:44:11
Speaker
Um... I was watching the cat. They had very obviously put something on the top of there because that cat is just licking the heck out the top of that entertainment center.
00:44:26
Speaker
No, I missed that. Lick, lick, lick, lick, lick the entire time. And I was like, that's to make sure he's not moving. Like that the cat's not going anywhere. Right. No, I missed that. um yeah Yeah. Even just the way Roscoe misses Buffet, this just just the way he says it, you tell he's... It's that internal battle of this is ridiculous, but yeah try trying to be a good friend.
00:44:50
Speaker
Yeah. Clearly, you are also the reincarnated spirit of my friend's mother. Clearly. Yes. Yes.
00:45:02
Speaker
That's correct. Yes. And we kind of end this scene, right? Ross offers them a futon, but Joey immediately thinks he's bragging because he's got an extra futon.
00:45:14
Speaker
um yeah We finished this episode. is Joey and Chandler just sitting in the canoe, staring off into space. To me, this is where we really see the canoe. That's a gorgeous... I don't have a canoe. I've never bought a canoe. I've been in a handful. I don't know anything really about them.
00:45:33
Speaker
That's a beautiful piece of ah craftsmanship, this this canoe they have. That, I assume, would cost thousands. Right.
00:45:45
Speaker
um
00:45:48
Speaker
Yeah, I would think so, because it is very nice. Very nice. That's not the kind of thing that this guy just built in his apartment for no reason.
00:46:00
Speaker
A bit like the, you know, the entertainment center that Joey knocks together in a day or two or whatever. is This is, this is gorgeous, this thing. Yeah. yeah It might be ah the finest oak this side of the Mississippi.
00:46:17
Speaker
It could just be. Or the finest oak floating down the Mississippi. this thing I was just looking at it and I was like, there's no way that thing is less than 5,000. Like, in my head. i mean, and maybe I'm completely wrong. if If anyone out there knows lots about canoes, let us know. But it's...
00:46:37
Speaker
Yeah, just just gorgeous, that thing. And again, I just love the way they've got no TV to watch, nothing to do. They are just... They're just sitting there staring. Staring into space.
00:46:48
Speaker
And that's how this e episode ends. um All right, who would be... Oh, there's more. well did you notice? Okay, so on your thing that you saw, did you see between the extra futon and the canoe...
00:47:05
Speaker
It was in memory of Dorothy Kaufman. No, no, I didn't see that. Oh, okay. yeah So it was in memory of Dorothy Kaufman, who was, would you care to guess?
00:47:23
Speaker
I would guess that's Martha's mother, Martha's mother. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, that's, that's a lovely touch. Yes. Well, and she had passed away on September 10th.
00:47:37
Speaker
1997. Right. And this episode aired on October 2nd. Ah. So like not even a month later.
00:47:47
Speaker
How sweet. Yeah. Yeah. It is sad. And then it had the mom thing with Phoebe. Of course. what What an episode to have that.
00:48:00
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, it is a wild thing. Yeah, that really is. um Oh, that's right. I would tell you the whole premise of the the thievery.
00:48:12
Speaker
um Yes, please. So the whole reason for it was they needed to get rid of the two black chairs, Joey and Chandler's black chairs. Because we're going to end up with brown chairs. Yes, it was the fact that they were black. um i was I was reading an article that they put them in and they were in a couple of episodes or an episode. The lighting and the camera of people hated them because the the there was always reflections from the black surface of all the overhead lights. So they had to keep changing all the lights and the angles and the camera had to be a certain way to avoid it bouncing off the chair. Wow. So they said to the writers, we have they have to go.
00:48:58
Speaker
We can't do this show with these black chairs, with the lighting and the cameras we have. They have to go. ke You need to have a story where these chairs disappear. So that's where the whole robbery came from. Wow.
00:49:13
Speaker
Yeah. hu Interesting. Yeah, because like the foosball table left, like everything's gone. Yeah, and this again, we've talked to this numerous times, the amount that the de the decor changes.
00:49:30
Speaker
Every week there's a new something on the wall, there's a new something in the background. it changes all the time. We never see them buying much to to decorate the apartment. They don't really seem like they care too much, but there's always new stuff hanging on the walls.
00:49:45
Speaker
Yeah. New stuff going up. Yeah. That's interesting because I remember they're going to end up with lawn chairs. Yes. ah You know, and and then they'll kind of work their way.
00:50:00
Speaker
Yeah, into Rosita and all of that. Yeah, and Stevie the TV and all of that. Yeah, it takes takes a little while.
00:50:13
Speaker
But yeah, it was all because of the color of the two chairs.

Episode Rating & Preview of 'The One With The Cuffs'

00:50:17
Speaker
um they had the The chairs had to be written out. Unfortunately. I guess it's better than pushing them down an elevator shaft, right?
00:50:27
Speaker
Indeed. All right. Well, who would be, let's see, your Gunther Central Park for this episode? ah Phoebe.
00:50:39
Speaker
Right. Phoebe. Yep. Phoebe. She's working through her stuff in a Phoebe-esque kind of way. And, you know...
00:50:52
Speaker
I don't know. I just love her. Yeah, i'm I'm right there with you. Phoebe was mine. I was going between her and Chandler because just some of his lines are great. Yeah. But now that we, when we looked over season three, I realized that I tend to default to Chandler a lot. I'm not going to let that influence me, but if it's a tie, I'm giving it to i'm given it to Phoebe this time because it was such a Phoebe-centric episode. And again, very funny and then very sweet at times too.
00:51:22
Speaker
yes all right well let's see what are we going to measure with this week good ah we italian made woodwork uh furniture only if it's the finest oak east of the mississippi oh how about pieces of the finest oak Yes, pieces of the finest or how many pieces, planks of wood would you give this episode?
00:51:53
Speaker
um Eight. Eight. I feel like it was a good, strong, funny, quirky kind of episode. Yeah, mattte you and I, are we're both Phoebe and I've got eight as well.
00:52:07
Speaker
I think it would be a little lower if it was just the storylines. but again, some of Chandler's jokes and the interaction with him and Joey brings it up. So a good, a good solid eight as well for me.
00:52:21
Speaker
ah um Yeah. Well, let's see. Next week it is. It's the one with the cuffs. The handcuffs are coming. Oh, yes.
00:52:32
Speaker
Okay. Again, there's an iconic... We'll see Rachel's boss again. Yes. Isn't it? Yeah, Joanna is coming back. Yeah, she And one of the greatest improvised scenes, I think, in Friends history is in this episode.
00:52:51
Speaker
Okay, I don't know what it is. We'll get into that. I don't know, because I don't know what it would be, what... And knowing that that a scene at the end of episode or the season three, the episode with um Billy Crystal and Robin. Oh, that opening. Yes, that that that's in the league all of its own.
00:53:19
Speaker
That all was improvised. That's ridiculous. That is in a league all of its own. that All by itself. Yeah, so back next week, Season 4, Episode 3, The One With The Cuffs. And as always, thank you, everybody out there, for listening to The Purple Door Podcast.
