00:00:04
Speaker
Well, hello and welcome to this week's episode of the Purple Door Podcast, a friend's rewatch pod. I'm one of your hosts, Alistair, alongside Deanne. Deanne, how are you today?
00:00:16
Speaker
I'm awesome, Al. I'm awesome. the As of ah one o'clock this afternoon, the kids are on summer break. Very exciting.
00:00:28
Speaker
Not a billion degrees. um And I was on time and ready to go for our recording. I'm super proud of myself. Look at you go. You should be. We we said six o'clock and 559, not 601.
00:00:40
Speaker
not and five fifty nine not six or one Six o'clock.

Excitement for Friends Season 4

00:00:44
Speaker
you are on yeah But Al, it's just because I'm so excited to start season four with you.
00:00:51
Speaker
Yeah. I'm so excited. like I feel like this is monumental. It's like a deal. This is like the stuff of lo and legend you know and the French universe. Yes! And I, and we'll get into it, but like I had at least one new thought about Friends in this episode, something I hadn't considered before. Interesting. And and like yeah, I'm super excited to get stuck into into this the season with you.
00:01:22
Speaker
um Yeah. little I mean, a little sad, because we're in season four already, but... We're not even halfway to the finish line. Exactly. Lots of time. Lots of time. Lots of time left.

Trivia Game: Bamboozle Begins

00:01:36
Speaker
But before we get stuck in, of course, let's do a round of bamboozle. Kate has just looked over the questions, given them her seal of approval.
00:01:46
Speaker
We are ready to roll. But it is episode one. And of course, I can't remember. Okay. So here's the question, Al. This is the question. Right. Stick with odds and evens because the last season ended on episode 25, which means that I did the question. So it is actually your turn to start.
00:02:10
Speaker
If you so wish, I'd like to start us off for season four. No, I would like to continue as we have been because this system works. Okay, great.
00:02:22
Speaker
And consider this like one of your your many awards you should get for demolishing me last season. i haven't counted up the score, but I know it was a a resounding victory in the Woolison household when it came to Bamboozled.
00:02:37
Speaker
I don't know it's. If didn't win them all, i don't feel like I won. Ah, right. um All right, but I'll start. Question number one of season four.
00:02:49
Speaker
Yep. What's the name of the guy that Phoebe knew that talked to his hand?
00:03:00
Speaker
That guy is called Cindy. Uh-oh. I thought it was Stanley. okay. Well, you know what? I thought... I don't know.
00:03:12
Speaker
yeah Okay, I will find it. Go ahead and ask, and then i'll it'll be great. Well, it's funny because my first question is, what did we find out Phoebe was doing when she was 18? it's a very similar, it's ah in a similar vein.
00:03:35
Speaker
Living on herself? Well, she was with this guy whose name we're going to figure out who talks to his hand. It is Cindy. It is Cindy. in a gremlin.
00:03:46
Speaker
Living in a gremlin. There you go. Yeah. All right. So there you go, Al. You won. Well, I got a point for Cindy and then you get a point for living in a gremlin and and you knew the rest.
00:03:59
Speaker
Well, yeah, but I was looking, so it didn't count. So i don't get it. Sorry. See, I would give it to you, but the competitive nature of Deanne Wilson won't accept that charity. It is because of the integrity here. The integrity that we talk of. The integrity at the Purple Door podcast. That's how operate. Okay. All right, Al, here we go.
00:04:23
Speaker
What were Joanne Chandler drinking when they were talking to Monica at the beach house and Phoebe came back into the beach house? I'm looking for a specific name, not just a type of beverage.
00:04:37
Speaker
Okay, I don't know, but I know at some point they're out of soda. Oh, you know what? Was it, um um
00:04:47
Speaker
what is it? Corona? It was Corona. Okay. I remember briefly seeing it, but not seeing the name and thinking that looks like Corona, but I i didn't see. All right.
00:04:58
Speaker
Sure. has Off to a strong start. All right. What time does Ross start reading the letter?
00:05:08
Speaker
5.30 a.m. He does indeed. And you are on the board. Okay. All right. How did Ursula know about Phoebe senior?
00:05:21
Speaker
That was in this alleged suicide note. Yes. Very nice. She evidently just scribbles down a copy of it.
00:05:32
Speaker
um Alright, my third question for you. your real mom lives in Montauk. Montauk, the end. What four things do Phoebe and her birth mom have in common?
00:05:49
Speaker
Puppies are cute. Yep. They're both hungry. That was the tricky one. They both don't have their umbrella and they both like pizza.
00:06:00
Speaker
Oh, you've given me one that I don't have. And then I've got one that you didn't mention. The umbrella I didn't catch. Yeah, because she goes, oh, it looks like rain and I don't have my umbrella.
00:06:14
Speaker
And then she goes, oh, me too. I would be very curious if that's in the cut scenes. Oh, no. It might be. bit And then she says, um I'm hungry.
00:06:28
Speaker
and then um she goes, oh, now you're just doing you're just doing this to be crazy. Yes. I think they cut that tiny bit of the umbrella. But you've got it. there was what There was one more. And it was a musical group they both like. Oh, the Beatles. There you go. Yes. Yeah.
00:06:45
Speaker
Okay.

Friends' Beach House Recap

00:06:47
Speaker
Alright, you have got three out of four so far Alright Who all knew the trick about peeing on a jellyfish sting?
00:06:59
Speaker
Okay, so Joey Joey knew it because he saw on the Discovery Channel Then Chandler said, yeah, there's ammonia in that And Ross knew it because he saw Yes, alright But just so we all know, here's a PSA.
00:07:19
Speaker
Don't pee on a jellyfish sting. See, I thought about looking it up. do you You know about this, evidently. I do know about this. I know a lot about jellyfish sting. We'll talk about it in a minute. Let's finish bamboozles, and then I will give you all the knowledge that you need.
00:07:35
Speaker
I am on the edge of my seat. All right, my know fifth question for you. when When Monica Chandler and Joey are on the beach, how far away are they from the beach house? Two miles.
00:07:49
Speaker
Ding, ding, ding. Two miles. And Joey's so tired from digging his hole. He's been digging the hole. Okay, but do you dig holes whenever you go to the beach? You know, i I don't know if I have, but I'm not, I don't go to the beach often.
00:08:05
Speaker
It's got to be said, but I could see that being an enjoyable afternoon. I don't know. why Yeah. I don't know why either, but that is always something that we do.
00:08:16
Speaker
Right. Always dig a giant hole and go in it. I don't know. for you It's weird. I don't know. But now I really, really want to go to the beach. Like now that the kids are on summer time for the beach.
00:08:29
Speaker
You're ready. I love it. All right. Let's see if can get five for five in the in my you know this this first episode. Wait, no.
00:08:39
Speaker
No? Oh, yeah. Wait. No, I started.

Ross, Rachel, and Bonnie's Awkward Encounter

00:08:45
Speaker
oh let's see. Maybe I just didn't so write one down because you had four of five.
00:08:51
Speaker
Let's see. One. One, two, three. asked you what's the name of the guy, and you got that. I asked you what they were drinking and you knew that.
00:09:03
Speaker
How did Ursula know about Phoebe? And you got that. Oh. yeah No, I'm. Let's see. I think you're right. I think I wrote down a thing wrong. I think you're right. Hang knocking on. Hang on.
00:09:19
Speaker
No. I've only asked you four questions, but I thought I started.
00:09:27
Speaker
hmm maybe it was the gremlin i don't know but give me the fifth question and we'll just go with it okay well i can't really ask you this one because what time was it when ross returned to rachel's room
00:09:44
Speaker
was that well you can say what time did he return to her room
00:09:55
Speaker
I remember 2.30 being mentioned, but I don't know if that's it.
00:10:01
Speaker
Well, okay, wait. What was your question? What time did Ross start reading the letter? Uh-huh. ah Which you answered. returned to the room and she gave him the letter.
00:10:13
Speaker
Oh, that's right. So that was 5.30. 5.30 as well. Ah,

Phoebe's Emotional Moment with Birth Mom

00:10:18
Speaker
yes. So that didn't really work well. Okay, let me ask you this question. Because that question, that one I shouldn't ask, is the same question.
00:10:28
Speaker
Yes. Okay, what was Ross's hint that it was getting very late? Very, very late. Oh, they saw the...
00:10:41
Speaker
I know it's got to do with Bonnie's head. But I can't remember if it was like the moon reflecting on her head or it was, what was it? Because I love the way they both covered their mouths and kind of shake their head.
00:10:59
Speaker
Oh, what was it? It was,
00:11:04
Speaker
could see, yeah I could see the moon reflecting on her head. No, it was the five o'clock shadow. That's it. Ah, yes. Which I thought was so funny.
00:11:17
Speaker
Yeah, and I love how funny they both found it. Yes, yes, yes. All right, well, we fit both finished four out of five on that I think that's a strong showing. It is, and I'm all out of questions, so. All right, I will throw a couple at you. According to her song, how many colors does Phoebe have in her bedroom?
00:11:37
Speaker
Sixty-six. Look at you go. And then my last one for you. How how long were Ross and Rachel apart? Is it four months? It's four months indeed. Nice.
00:11:50
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Look us go. Strong, and strong start. There you go. we did awesome. We did. All right, let's get stuck into this. We start off in a very unusual way with Joey giving us a recap of the story, like directly to the camera.
00:12:07
Speaker
um I like it. Like, I like the way this is starting off because, of course, it in when this was on air, it's been months um since, you know, think it ended in the spring and then starts again the fall. So four or five months. Yeah.
00:12:22
Speaker
And I just liked where he's like, so then this was, how I don't really know what happened there. And then this was going, but I don't really know what happened there. he just doesn't, he just has bits and pieces. Yeah. he doesn't my laugh He doesn't have the whole story of any parts of this at all. he needs Chandler's help.
00:12:41
Speaker
Yes. Yes. And he was like, let me go get Chandler. Yes. And I thought that was so fun. I liked it a lot. Yeah, it's different. you know You know, they kind of thought about, will this work? This is a different thing, having Joey talk to the camera. I like it.
00:12:57
Speaker
I thought it was a and a different way to start off ah ah start off an episode. um We go into the beach house and we find out that Ross was going into, rachel or he goes into Rachel's room, but Bonnie's in there too.
00:13:12
Speaker
yeah Well, okay. And so that's what I thought was so funny about it. Because... i I did not remember which room he went into.
00:13:25
Speaker
Right. I didn't remember. And so then he whenever he walked in and they were both in there, i was like, that was that was a very wild choice.
00:13:40
Speaker
You know what I mean? Because it could have been either one of them. It could have been either one of theirs rooms. And so it it was kind of a fun, like suspenseful, shocking thing.
00:13:55
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Great to end the season. Yeah. Who's in whose room right now? Yeah. No, I like the way they did it. Yeah. Because when you see Rachel and Bonnie in there, you're not, in my head, you're not sure whose room it is.
00:14:11
Speaker
It plays out for a little until clearly Bonnie leaves. And um so this this was the thing that I hadn't really thought about before. And tell me if I'm misjudging this situation a little bit. So but Bonnie leaves. she got a sunburned Rachel's helping her out. And then she leaves. Ross and Rachel gets. And then he kind of stops because he has to break up with Bonnie.
00:14:36
Speaker
Now, we are both on Rachel's side of the whole we were on a break, Chloe debacle. Yes. Rachel, at this point, is quite happy to kind of be the other woman in this situation because Ross is dating somebody.
00:14:52
Speaker
Right. it's it's it's I'm not saying it's the same, but I was like... But is it not? I don't know. Yeah, like, sad for somebody who was condemning Ross, and rightly so, she's quite happy to make out with him even though he's dating somebody else.
00:15:10
Speaker
he's the He's kind of the one that stops and says, and you know, I need go break up with her. A little too late, I might add, but. Well, and, yeah.
00:15:22
Speaker
Yeah. I didn't think about that before. um You know, if Rachel's, I don't know, I'd be interested if any listeners want to share their thoughts on that. It would be interesting.
00:15:35
Speaker
You know, I don't know. I was very much with Rachel and now it just just kind of muddies the waters at a touch for me. um Yeah. Yeah. So he stops because he says he's got to go break up with Bonnie. Rachel's like, what now? And yeah, he he needs to um go and talk to her. Mm hmm.
00:15:56
Speaker
We go over to older Phoebe's house um and the two Phoebes are talking about what happened and how older Phoebe got pregnant. The three of them were a couple and Phoebe doesn't know how that would work, which I quite like. um Older Phoebe definitely wants to get to know her, but our Phoebe storms out and forgets her purse and has to come in with her eyes closed or her eyes covered, which I just thought was fantastic.
00:16:28
Speaker
Yes. Yes. That was funny. Okay, so I want to ask you, why why did she come back in with her eyes closed? Oh, it's because she said, I never want to see you again. is that right? Right. But why did she have to come back in?
00:16:44
Speaker
She forgot her purse. Yeah, she left her purse in there. um yeah that was it was It was well played. liked that like that's a lot.
00:16:56
Speaker
I did too. It made me laugh. I thought that was just really cute and and funny. Yeah. ah Yeah, and then did you get how old Phoebe was?
00:17:08
Speaker
You know what? I saw that she was older. Phoebe was 18. She I was 18 and scared or something. And then Phoebe is 29.
00:17:20
Speaker
Do i have that right? Yeah. So that puts her 47, something like that. She looks a lot older than 47. She does. it wait When I see people that are really close to my age, I go, do I look that old?
00:17:35
Speaker
She looks a lot older. Am just not seeing? Yeah. Yeah, like, what the heck? Not seeing.

Beach Antics: Jellyfish Incident

00:17:44
Speaker
But then again, I remember seeing something about, like, the golden girls and the ages they actually were and things. And they were still older, but they were, you know, they looked much older. Not as old as, yes.
00:17:56
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. yeah um We go back over to the over to the beaches. I i love this story. This this running plot between Monica and Chandler. I do too.
00:18:08
Speaker
It's very just sweet and kind of wholesome. And um Monica that says they're out soda and Chandler's like, I'll get some for you. Nope, because I'm not your boyfriend.
00:18:20
Speaker
It's just, i I can't quite put my finger on why I like it so much. It just feels wholesome. Because you know what's coming. You know what's coming. And it's all of this little, and Monica. Who's the control freak is just like, no, no, no. Yeah. And yes, honey. Yes.
00:18:37
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. and There's just such a good friendship foundation. i just love Phoebe comes back in and tells them what happened that, you know, Montauk lady is actually her, her birth mom.
00:18:51
Speaker
And then everyone started lying. But she doesn't want to talk. She's just going to go upstairs and then ah calls Monica at the last minute. Obviously, Monica didn't quite catch that cold. that It's ah just time for some girl talk.
00:19:07
Speaker
Okay. Here's a thing that was taken out in the in the same in the in your episode because there was a scene or just a short little exchange between Chandler and raw, um, Chandler and Joey.
00:19:23
Speaker
So she's like Monica. So then Monica goes up and Joey's like, Hey, so what would it be like if you found out that your mom wasn't really your mom?
00:19:36
Speaker
He goes, but your new mom was really hot. So Chandler sits there for a minute. And then he goes, uh, you're talking about your mom. And he goes, no, I'm not. I'm talking about your mom.
00:19:50
Speaker
No, I didn't see it. Yeah, no. mean, I'm following along with the script in my notes. Right. So that's something that was extra on mine.
00:20:00
Speaker
But it was such a funny exchange. And it just kind of landed where you're back. It reminds you who Chandler and Joey are. you Right. And I thought that was so funny. so that makes And that was another way.
00:20:16
Speaker
you actually saw the word Corona on the on the bottle. Oh, on the bottles. Yes. And so like you knew that those were Corona bottles earlier in the scene, but in that exchange, which makes sense now because I see that you did not have that part.
00:20:32
Speaker
Yes. yeah i did We did see them and that blue-white label is quite distinctive. I was just trying to... i couldn't make out if it was Corona or Corollo or something. you know They made up a a similar name yeah nah that's corona no all right all right let's see where are we we're still in the beach house but we're back upstairs we're in rachel's room ross has broken up with bonnie it took a long time if i had asked you what color is rachel's notebook would you have known
00:21:05
Speaker
i would have I would barely have known she had the notebook, except for the fact she wrote the letter. Purple. We'll go with purple. Oh, it was red. It was red. Ah, well, yeah, would have had no idea.
00:21:17
Speaker
um I do love that that. Now that you've told me what I remember, the five o'clock shadow joke, it's the way they shake their heads and cover their mouths. It's just good combat comedic timing there. um And then one of the most famous...
00:21:33
Speaker
Guess we could call it a prop or just lines. You know, there's 18 pages front and back that Rachel's written. he's ah Kate's sitting on the other side of the desk. I just heard her go, front and back. Yeah, i mean got I mean, top five famous friends lines, if not if not the top.
00:21:56
Speaker
Front and back. That is one that's said at our house a lot. Joseph... says it a lot. Yeah, if there's any opportunity for a good old front and back, you've got to take it. Yes, absolutely.
00:22:12
Speaker
So Ross ends up, we we kind of cut to the beach house downstairs again in the kitchen and Ross is face first in the letter. Hand around coffee mug. I did write down what was on his coffee mug, but that didn't seem like... that was one my questions. That question, number one. It was big old lemon.
00:22:30
Speaker
that Okay, so that's that's the why you had to get rid of it, because I had it in my ah in my spares over there. um You know what? I haven't written this down. When was the last time you fell asleep somewhere that you shouldn't have?
00:22:47
Speaker
Like, unexpected. Because I was just thinking, i' ever just fallen asleep like that with my head on the desk, and I can't think of a time. Yeah. ah Yeah.
00:23:01
Speaker
Probably in church, right? That seems like it it seems like a place you would. Yeah, yeah yeah if you're sitting and and just kind of sitting. Yeah. um Yeah, I guess that's my answer. Yeah. What about you? i don't know.
00:23:17
Speaker
i would have to, where I've fallen asleep where I shouldn't have. I can't think of anywhere off the top of my head. You know I'll doze off if we've got a movie on or something.
00:23:27
Speaker
But that doesn't count. You know, you're on your own couch. Oh, no, I will fall asleep at the movie theater. That is good quality sleep. yeah Wow, that's expensive sleep, Al. It is. it is it's It's a great internal struggle of good sleep and then spending money for it.
00:23:46
Speaker
ah oh Yeah, so it better be a good sleep because that's not cheap. no Man, I want to go to the Cosm. So bad. Have you seen that Yeah, I've never been. with um I've heard nothing but like good things about the actual experience told us very expensive, like drinks and food are very expensive.
00:24:10
Speaker
Well,

Deanne's Jellyfish Sting Story

00:24:11
Speaker
okay. So what Joseph was telling me is that it's half price. Like if you buy your tickets the day of. So like a Broadway show, you know how like if you wait and get like whatever seats are left over.
00:24:22
Speaker
that you can get a much more reasonable price. But they've got Harry Potter, the first one there right now. You have to go. oh I do. my One of my friends who went said like, and I don't know if it costs much more. Actually, it could just be the same. But they said getting a good seat like in the middle nearest the front really does make a difference.
00:24:45
Speaker
Because then you are truly so. similarmer no Yes, there you That's the word. If you're kind of on the edge, it's still very cool. But that yeah you know there really is a difference if you get a good seat. yo You have to do that report back.
00:25:01
Speaker
Yes, I will. I will. But we're going to do it during the week. So I think I got to wait a couple more weeks until I'm completely off of work. and then Absolutely. Maybe by the time that we're actually playing this episode, it will be time.
00:25:16
Speaker
That's right. Yes, we are recording and um a little bit in advance because I am going... You have your big cross-ocean friend. That's right right. Going back to Scotland for four weeks. So we're we're getting ahead so we don't miss a Thursday. We wouldn't want to leave people without the Purple Door podcast on a Thursday. So we're getting it done. Yeah, Ross wakes up with the letter kind of stuck to his face and bit discombobulated and...
00:25:46
Speaker
I do think it's weird that Rachel just, well, first of all, that he left to read the letter. I guess that was she wanted. She told him Did she tell him to? I can't quite recall.
00:25:58
Speaker
did. Because right before she says um and um he says, she says, well, I'll be waiting for you. Just come back. when Oh, that's right. Yes.
00:26:10
Speaker
Yeah. And then he's like, I'll be up in 18 pages. Front and back. Very exciting. Yes. So, oh, yeah.
00:26:23
Speaker
ah ah There's something about this scene that I'm just, Rachel, you're better than that. Like the the writing of the letter or the whole does it?
00:26:35
Speaker
Does it. The whole does it. Yeah. Because I get, like, it had to be funny and it had to be, you know, something that he... ah clearly has no idea what's happening right right but it's so passive aggressive like yeah it's kind of like come on Rachel but yeah it sure is funny that it is um he hesitates look over the page yeah go ahead yeah oh no yeah he hesitates he wants to give it one more you know thorough look or something even though he says he's read it twice and then takes a gamble shoots his shot and he gets it right by saying that it is and rachel is uh is is one happy lady um
00:27:26
Speaker
We head back over to the beach and I did look this up just to make sure because there was such a gap um between the last episode and this episode. Monica's hair is different and Chandler's hair. He's dyed his hair between getting to the beach house. Wow.
00:27:46
Speaker
Yeah, i did not notice that. Hers she apparently cut for Scream 2 and he just died his over the summer or whenever they had met and they actually had a break. They didn't film all of this beach stuff at this, you know, at one time.
00:28:01
Speaker
It's odd that they wouldn't have put the hair back. Yeah. Yeah. i mean, it's just got like blonde highlight. I know nothing about that, you know, doing hair, but I assume you could just brush in some brown and it would take his hair back to the way it was.
00:28:15
Speaker
But his hair is quite different, as is Monica's. um yeah the thing i read said that phoebe's mom's hair was different to in this episode than the last one like she'd had to cut but i don't know if that's true or not um i don't know yeah but chandler keeps asking monica did not even notice well i didn't notice rachel's dress that you loved last week so it's yeah she and she had it on again i love that dress yeah um chandler and monica they're sort of lying down on the beach and he is think he brings up one of those a nuclear holocaust um he's got ken he's got canned goods yeah he does yeah uh and this is where joey has very proudly dug a hole dug a hole here Yeah, you're right.
00:29:07
Speaker
I'll be interested to see what Kate thinks about that. About digging a hole? Ask her, yeah. Yeah, I'll ask her right now. If digging a hole on the beach would just be a satisfying thing to do. No.
00:29:20
Speaker
What? No, she's not team dig a hole on the beach. Oh my gosh, Kate. Maybe she's just not ever gone to the beach with me and my family.
00:29:32
Speaker
She feels it would just crumble in. Just no. Wait, no, no, that's no, it doesn't. And that's why it's so cool. And then if you dig deep enough, you end up in the water.
00:29:45
Speaker
right, that is quite cool. I know. Something about that might get on board. And when we're finished I will float that idea. You got to keep digging until you make it down and then the water down there.
00:29:57
Speaker
Like without the water, like washing up and going in. Right. so That's pretty cool. Well, the speaking of washing up and washing in this is what happens. The wave comes in and just fills up Joey's hole he spent so much time on. But the jellyfish stings Monica.
00:30:15
Speaker
And okay panic ensues. And I am going to get comfortable while you give us all a lesson on the wonder this is jellyfish. All right. So we have to start off by saying, you know, Joseph grew up in way South Texas, 30 minutes tops from South Padre Island. So he grew up going to the beach a lot. So that's like a normal thing for him. Yeah.
00:30:46
Speaker
And so whenever we got married and then the first trip that we took to go to the beach, he was like, oh yeah. And we got to get some meat tenderizer. And I was like, meat tenderizer for what? And he was like, jellyfish. And I was like, well, jellyfish are disgusting. And if I see a jellyfish, I'm not going in the Cause they look like plastic bags. oh yeah They're like, they're so gross. Like, no. And he's like, well, hopefully we won't see any, but no, like in our boots bag, we always have to have meat tenderizer.
00:31:19
Speaker
but And I had never heard that. And I'm like, that's super weird. So we have a bat a little like container of meat tenderizer that goes in our bag. Well, then, you know, we're talking along at some point and didn't,
00:31:35
Speaker
Don't know if it's because of this episode or what, but I was like, you know, if you get stung by a jellyfish, you're supposed to pee on it. and Like that's what you do.
00:31:47
Speaker
And, um, and he was like, no, no, that's an old wives tale. Don't do that. And so i was like, really? And he's like, yeah, no, the meat tenderizer, that's the way to go.
00:31:59
Speaker
You put that on it and it, it calms everything down. I said, okay. Well, then i had to look it up, right? Because I'm like, I remember one time we went to Galveston with drill team whenever I was in high school and a girl got stung by the jellyfish and she was like freaking out and crying and oh my God. And then that's whenever I decided no. Like if I see one, i will not be going in the water that day.
00:32:26
Speaker
No, thank you. No, thank you. No need for that. No. Well, And so actually you do not pee on a jellyfish sting because that actually introduces all kinds of bacteria and will actually create more problems than Okay.
00:32:47
Speaker
And then, then I learned and Joseph does not believe me. He does not care what Google says or what Mayo Clinic says or anything. But meat fertilizer actually does not do what,
00:33:02
Speaker
He thinks it does. it it It doesn't do anything substantial. Okay. Okay. What it can do is actually go in and create more stings.
00:33:14
Speaker
But I've got a friend and she went to
00:33:22
Speaker
um one of our Texas beaches. I don't remember if it was Corpus or Galveston, um but she got stung. And um whenever you get stung, they like stick like ah like porcupines, right? like But they're much smaller. Right.
00:33:41
Speaker
Hang on.
00:33:46
Speaker
I'm going to pause recording for two seconds. Wilson's having a coughing fit over there. And we are back. Wilson has recovered from the coughing that almost took her out. Barely. I mean, whoa. But anyway, she got stung.
00:34:02
Speaker
And then over time, like days later, like the pain never went away. and she had done like all the things and it kept hurting and kept hurting.
00:34:13
Speaker
ah She ended up going to the er and she had gotten stung by a man of war. She didn't know that there was a difference. And I mean, how would you? They're disgusting plastic bag looking things.
00:34:27
Speaker
But what those do is like they'll sting you. They put in their tentacles. And then the tentacles shoot off more tentacles. so like They had to go and they had to like remove the tentacles out of her leg. That sounds horrific. Yes.
00:34:46
Speaker
So, I'm like, I need to know what you do for man-o-war stings as well because, oh my gosh. Okay, but for the jellyfish, all you're supposed to do is rinse it with the seawater and then you can put vinegar on it.
00:35:02
Speaker
Or really hot water, like 100 to 120, 130 degree water on it. And it'll it'll clear it out. Then you put lotion and everything to help your skin heal.
00:35:20
Speaker
Now, but with the manowar sting, because it actually has the tentacles that shoot into your leg and all the, or I'm assuming you got stung on your leg. I

Return from the Beach and Secrets Revealed

00:35:31
Speaker
don't know why. But wherever it's stung, you've got to remove the tentacles.
00:35:37
Speaker
And you actually have to do it very, very carefully and not with your fingers because your fingers can cause more tentacles to shoot off, but then also can introduce bacteria, which will create infection.
00:35:55
Speaker
So then you have to remove the tentacles. Then after that, then you can treat it. But anyway... So meat tenderizer, old wives' tale.
00:36:05
Speaker
Peeing, old wives' tale. What you need to do is have hot water, vinegar, and patience. There you go.
00:36:17
Speaker
I love it. I feel like I just got an education. Now we're ready the beach. Yes. You can follow my advice. And if you see a stupid plastic bag, nasty thing, don't go in the water.
00:36:29
Speaker
And there you go. And then you can't get stung if you're not anywhere near them. If you're not anywhere near them. They're stupid and they're gross and ouch. Yeah. One of those things you look at and you're like, what what purpose do they serve in, in you know. It's like a mosquito.
00:36:45
Speaker
For what? Yeah. What's the purpose? For what? yeah Gosh. Jerks. Jerks. Well, they the no it's two miles back to the beach house. So, um yeah, that's ah that's when Joey suggests they pee on it. But we do go back to the beach house. Phoebe is about to leave.
00:37:05
Speaker
um and she sees ross and rachel together on the couch which is great but not for bonnie oh go ahead oh i'm sorry yes no no no so you know ah whenever he says you know don't don't blame me i saw it on the discovery channel and then the channeler's like you know what he's right well that's right there's ammonia in there and whatever yes and then she's like freaking out it doesn't hurt that bad and then she's like crying and everything And then Joey's like, well, if you want some privacy, you can go here in my hole. That's right. See, this one, I need you to jump it because I skipped over that. Yeah, you can always use the hole. It's so funny. Yes, because it's a great hole.
00:37:46
Speaker
Gosh, it's giant great hole. It does make me want to pack up my buckets and spades and go to the beach. Yes, I know. yeah yeah Yeah. We'll bring Kate over to the fun hole digging site.
00:38:01
Speaker
I'm just saying, you get a good shovel, she'll have a good time. That's right. love it But we'll have to have a challenge. well um that will get her invested correct um right so bonnie's gone we'll never see bonnie again i don't suppose um ross and rachel together on the couch um joey chandler and monica then walk back in i just wrote down that they were all sheepish and they're all going for a shower oh yes yeah and i thought it was so funny right because they walk in and they're like Hey! And, you know, they're cuddling, like, trying to show off or whatever, you know? Yes. And I thought it was so funny because Monica's like, or Rachel's, you know, how is the beach?
00:38:46
Speaker
and Nothing. I don't know. and I don't know. Nothing. I gotta take a shower. yeah me too, me too. you So weird.
00:38:57
Speaker
and so was so well done yes um And at this point, I've just scribbled down that Ross realizes what he committed to. think at that point, right, he read the letter and then was like, it so does not.
00:39:11
Speaker
Because right as soon as before she leaves to go pack or whatever it is, right before she leaves, so she's like, so it really does. And he's like, it does. yeah It truly does. And then as soon as she leaves, he's like, goes back and reads that last page and a half.
00:39:32
Speaker
and it does that' not freak out yeah yes um well we we end up immediately back at central park and ross is now telling joey and chandler about the letter how unfair it is and i feel like man chandler's right chandler's right yeah like i feel like he gives him some good solid advice Yeah. Solid advice. Like, you've got what you want. Like, why? joe don't ruin it. Don't ruin it. Exactly. She's the best thing that ever happened to you. You got let it go. You screwed up.
00:40:09
Speaker
Like, just let it go. yeah I think... I think he's right. i I start having a tiny bit of sympathy. Not sympathy. It's not the right one.
00:40:20
Speaker
When Rachel and Ross are lying in bed together. Like, I don't know if he's going to take responsibility for which he should. If she's getting back together with him, just sitting there kind of, oh, my mother said this. um You know, that stuff, which we'll get into. um yeah You know, that's not good for him either. But yeah, Chandler, good advice. Ross, you should take responsibility for what you did and just shut up, basically. You've got what you want when you kind of shouldn't have.
00:40:52
Speaker
So... Yeah, we end up in a... feet oh I like that last line, though, in that ah one scene. Whenever they they keep asking, like, so what happens at the beach? Yes. Between us and the and the sea.
00:41:09
Speaker
Us and the sea, Ross. Yes. It's so good. um We end up in Ursula's hallway just for a little bit. And Phoebe goes over to tell her about their mom. But Ursula already knew.
00:41:24
Speaker
You're not going to invite her in. Yeah, no, just we're going to stand in the hallway and then shut the door on your face. And I'd like to know more of the backstory. I don't really know we're ever really told why they fall out or why they fell out. and I think that's because Ursula sucks, right? she She does. There's not any redeeming.
00:41:46
Speaker
the There's things we find out about and things we know about. ah None of that's redeeming. Okay, we haven't had the episode yet. where people start recognizing Phoebe thinking that she's Ursula, right? Correct. We've not had that yet. Yeah, because, I mean, and I thought of that whenever she kept shutting the door in and her face. I was like, man, that's so rude. And then I was like, oh, but if that's what's going on, yeah, that makes sense.
00:42:18
Speaker
Yeah, um yeah, Ursula, not a fan. um She already knew there was a note and a poem left by her mum, but Phoebe didn't see either of them.
00:42:31
Speaker
But Phoebe, Ursula scribbled down you know, I'll miss you, P.S. Your mum lives in Montauk. so yeah and let's see we we go back to the girls apartment this is my my my favorite scene man this just builds up and builds up um so chandler monica and joey are eating breakfast barely talking phoebe comes in yeah we can talk to phoebe
00:43:03
Speaker
if she doesn't really want to give you thousand dollars to talk to yeah and uh i just it just i don't know maybe this scene is three minutes i don't know but the way it builds up and builds up um ross and rachel come out from somewhere i don't know if that was the bathroom or the balcony but from that direction and say, hey, how about we make that beach trip an annual thing?
00:43:28
Speaker
Monica, Joey, and Chandler, absolutely not. And Rachel has had it. What happened on that beach? And you know you knew it was going to be Joey. Joey's always the one who breaks because he can't keep secrets.
00:43:40
Speaker
like he's just got As he said, he's just got to get it out. um I could even think how to write notes about how good this, I don't know what we'd call it,
00:43:53
Speaker
a trial log, the three of them talking kind of over each other and continuing the sentences. Um, it's so good. It's, oh, it's one, it's one of my favorite scenes I've seen in a long time. Um, like it's, it's kind of read in this dramatic way, finishing each other's sentences. And then when Joey says he gets stage fright, like the actor gets stage fright. Um, It's too much pressure. Just brilliant. um Although he does declare if he had to, he'd pee on any one of you. But then, well, except I couldn't.
00:44:35
Speaker
um Just absolute gold, that bit of the scene. um and then we end up, is this? No, not quite the end, of

Phoebe's Heartfelt Connection with Birth Mom

00:44:44
Speaker
course. We end up in Central Park. Phoebe's singing about it. Wait, wait, wait. Are we just going to skip over the fact that it was Chandler?
00:44:52
Speaker
Chandler who did it. Oh, so yeah. Yeah. and Go ahead. Do it now. it now. it now. And then he's like, sometimes late at night, I can still hear it.
00:45:03
Speaker
And then Joey's like, yeah, that's me. I do that. I yell it through my wall to freak you out. And that, the that was the perfect end for that scene because it was, it was so great because they're building and building and building on it. And then I love the fact that,
00:45:21
Speaker
that it ended up being Chandler, the one that was, you know, you you'll, you know, would you date me and, and all of that, you know, I, you know, there's that nice closing at the end of this episode for that.
00:45:37
Speaker
Yes. You know, you know how we, we know what's going to happen. We know what happens. Yes. Yeah. But I love it. I think it's so funny. And I also overlooked, mean, it's just one thing, but Chandler sitting with his head in his hands, screaming into his hands. Yes. Like the the trauma. attic Oh my gosh.
00:45:59
Speaker
Yes. So funny. Yeah. So funny. So well done. Oh, and there was, there was a, um there was a cut scene right here Yeah.
00:46:14
Speaker
And and just then, you know, Phoebe goes, man, like this has really been something. Maybe you should talk to somebody about it.
00:46:25
Speaker
And then Monica goes, who? Like there's a group for people like us? And Phoebe goes, actually, yes, there's this man. His name is Owen. i think I have his card. And so she starts digging through her purse looking for a card for somebody to give them help to work through this.
00:46:47
Speaker
Which I thought was fun. Of course she knows somebody who had helped. people who had to pee on each other of course so i'm I've already kind of decided I'm not going to watch the DVDs with the extras you know while we're recording this for the next few years but as a reward to myself when we're finished I am then going to go back and watch them all because I don't want to do it I quite like finding out these things from you yeah these things that are cut out I like doing it this way but yeah all these extra little scenes are kind of fantastic
00:47:19
Speaker
Yes. Yeah. um Phoebe's in Central Park. She's singing about all the colors in her bedroom when birth mom walks in. and I quite like this scene. I'll say now, I i wish we saw more of um Phoebe Senior, you know, the the mother.
00:47:40
Speaker
I think this could this dynamic could have grown into something. um I'd like to have seen that friendship develop between the two Phoebes. um Because she came and told her that she has regrets of giving her up.
00:47:55
Speaker
and um they they find out that they've got lots of things in common i love the line about you came looking for family and i'm it and i think that kind of that kind of did it for phoebe you know our phoebe she was like yeah yeah that's that's exactly what happened um yeah i wish we had seen more of her um I don't know. I just thought there potential for really nice ah a really nice friendship to develop.
00:48:25
Speaker
I don't think we ever see her again. i mean Spoiler alert to Phoebe's wedding. you know Do we ever see her?
00:48:35
Speaker
I don't know. Because whose funeral is it that they're at whenever she meets her dad?
00:48:47
Speaker
Is that her grandma's funeral? It is, right? So then her grandma is whose mom? That would be who she thought was her mother.
00:48:59
Speaker
The lady who committed suicide. That lady would have known, right, that her daughter didn't really have a baby. Right? Right. Oh, that's a good point. Yeah, Grandma would have known that.
00:49:14
Speaker
Unless she just said that she was Lily's mom and she was really Phoebe's mom. Yeah. to Phoebe Senior's mom.
00:49:26
Speaker
I don't know. Yeah, you're absolutely right. Grandma was on this. Yes. mean, she would have to be, right? grandma was in on this yeah i mean she would have to be right Yeah, I mean... yeah We'll have to pay attention really close whenever Frank... um Or whenever... Yeah, Frank Sr. comes into play.
00:49:52
Speaker
Well, wait. has grand Grandma's not died yet. No, she's still pregnant. Yeah. So, hmm. don't know. Yeah, um we

Ross and Rachel's Argument

00:50:04
Speaker
see... We do see her one more time.
00:50:07
Speaker
um And of course we do. do you know that I see it, I know what it is. Do you remember when we see her again? Uh-uh. It's... um When Phoebe is considering being a surrogate, she comes in and says, look, had to give up a baby. And she brings the puppy. We'll get to that in the about 10 episodes time. Okay. Okay. Yeah. That's the last time we see her. ah Terry Gar was her name. She passed away two years ago, which is ah sad to read. But, um yes, was amazing. That's super, super interesting. um ah but that that that weave That weave, that web that was weaved.
00:50:51
Speaker
um Didn't think about that. Yeah, but she lived, she was 80 years old. yeah got good A good long life. Good, good for her. um We end up in Rachel's bedroom. This is pretty much, no, it's not quite the last scene. Ross and Rachel are in bed.
00:51:11
Speaker
I don't know. I just, I don't really like Rachel in this scene. It's not that she does anything wrong. And again, we're very much the Ross was in the wrong, but just how much he's grown. Yeah. She's just having word vomit.
00:51:25
Speaker
Yeah. And like doing, if he's going to take responsibility, let him take responsibility and kind of move on. it was just that kind of, Oh, this is what my mom said. Like, Nothing good comes from that.
00:51:38
Speaker
um you you you know You know, yeah. um Yeah, no good from that. And he should get me, it's just he should give himself some credit and he's grown.
00:51:50
Speaker
um but ross isn't having it and yells pretty loudly we were on a break um monica chandler and joey must have just have been coming into the apartment yeah suddenly monica's cleaning yes got a gloves on cleaning and a dress what in the world That that seems like a a bold choice. That one does. But they don't they don't get out of the apartment in time because this argument of Ross and Rachel kind of spills into the living room.
00:52:23
Speaker
And again, one of the more famous lines. Sleep. One of the more famous that you feel, sleep. um And it's it's just such a man alive, like...
00:52:36
Speaker
I'm trying to think of the word to describe the argument. They're just throwing shots at each other. Like there is nothing constructive here. Considering they were all lovey-dovey 30 seconds before. it's like What in the world? What is happening here?
00:52:51
Speaker
Okay. So this part where Ross is like, or she's like, we are so over. And he's like, fine by me yeah it always makes me think of dwight whatever he's like i missed him i yeahm and then false false yeah yeah it's so funny to me don't know if yeah when they kind of switch the mood like that that's exactly put those two together but that's exactly right um
00:53:23
Speaker
Yeah, Ross ends up leaving. Rachel's yelling at him down the hallway. I mean, it is just the wheels have fallen off very quickly um of this relationship.
00:53:36
Speaker
But we do end on a lovely note. We're back in the girl's apartment. I don't know why I love it so much. Monica and Chandler playing cards and she says gin and Chandler's like, we're playing gin.
00:53:48
Speaker
Like he just, oh, Something, ah go ahead, go on, and then I'll tell you what cut. Okay, you jump in. um And I love the way she tells him, what does she say? Something like, you're smart and you're funny and I love you, but you'll always be the guy who peed on me.
00:54:06
Speaker
And it's yeah it's just, it's just ah it's it's a funny but lovely and sweet moment to run this episode off. Yeah, it is. Okay, no, the way that I had my screen, it looked like that last line wasn't there.
00:54:20
Speaker
And I was like, oh my gosh, that was like the best line of that ah whole episode. Right. where She's like, I think you're great. You're sweet. You're smart. And I love you. But you will always be the guy that peed on me. Absolutely. And y'all will be married.
00:54:41
Speaker
So calm down. Yes. It's all going to be okay.

Episode Reflection and Teaser

00:54:45
Speaker
Yeah, it will. Well, this, feel, a good, strong start to a season, but who yeah would be your Gunther Central Park?
00:54:55
Speaker
Chandler, because he's the MVP. That's it. Yeah. He's the MVP. Yeah. yeah For me, it had to be Joey Chandler or Monica because of that. I'm calling it a trial log. I'm making up warrants. I don't know what we call it. So I had to pick one of them.
00:55:13
Speaker
And then I love the Monica and Chandler dynamic in this. And for the same reason as you, he's the one who was able to pee on the jellyfish jellyfish sting.
00:55:24
Speaker
Yeah, I've had I've had to go with Chandler as well. um How many holes are we digging this week for this episode? Oh, OK. Yeah, I put 10 or ah it's holes that we are digging
00:55:43
Speaker
pages front and back you know what that might win 10 pages front and back but i like the digging holes too so i'm just actually gonna put both why not well and then we could get philosophical and can you dig half a hole you know if one of us was going to score this half a point but don't worry um Yeah, I think i'm you know amma im I'm going between eight and a half and nine. This this is a strong episode for me. is. like this a lot. It's tough.
00:56:18
Speaker
I will share with you why I put 10. Do you want tell you? You know what? I'm going to make a decision first. Oh! Okay, sorry. I'm not trying to influence. No, no. You're fine. I'm going to go eight and a half um just for the fun of having half a whole or eight front and backs and then one side.
00:56:38
Speaker
This is such a good episode. But please tell me your 10. I'd love to hear this. Okay. So, I went through and i On season three, i went through all of my episodes and I put like, you know, what I rated each one of them. And I gave one 10.
00:56:59
Speaker
a ten And for me, this episode is better than the one I gave. wow So I was like, you know what? I good.
00:57:12
Speaker
I feel good about that because this is, but if We got the lines in there, the front and back. And then, hoo-hoo, fine by me. And I mean, there's so much from this episode and it's so funny. And it's it's just, it's such, ah in my opinion, it's darn near perfect.
00:57:32
Speaker
It is good. Yeah, I'm just looking back now at my season three notes and there was two that I gave a nine to and it's it's right there with them. it's right The one where nobody's ready. My goodness, that was a funny episode.
00:57:46
Speaker
um But yeah, this one, it's different. It's fun being on the beach at different location, things like that. In fact, we don't actually go into the boys' apartment at all, do we?
00:57:58
Speaker
In this episode? Yeah. No. So yeah, just it's different. It's a season premiere. and And I think it's just superb.
00:58:09
Speaker
A wonderful job. um Well, on that note, Eddie, final quick thought before we wrap this one up. Be sure to pack meat tenderizer if you're going to the beach. Just cause.
00:58:23
Speaker
Just cause. Even though it's no wives. It'll make you feel better if you do. Maybe that's it All right. Well, we will be back next week with the one with the cat.
00:58:37
Speaker
The one with the cat. It's going to be good. It's going to be good. Rachel. can't wait. But thank you, everybody out there, as always, for listening to the Purple Door Podcast.
