Speaker: Well, hello and welcome to a very special edition of the Purple Door Podcast, a friend's rewatch pod. I'm one of your hosts, Alistair, alongside Deanne. Deanne, how are you this evening?
Speaker: Great, Al. I'm great. Fantastic. Yes, all is good here. All is good. Yeah, we've just had a good catch up off the air. Everything good in both of our lives.
Speaker: And I'm excited to get stuck into a season three review. This will be a shorter episode than usual because we'll just be looking over the season as a whole before we get stuck in next week to season four opening with the one with the jellyfish.
Speaker: Season 3, I mean, Friends is great in every season. All of them are good, but Man Alive Season 3 had some big hitters. I thought before we get into it, and looking at our favourite episodes and such, I would read just a quick season review.
Speaker: So at the beginning of season three, Ross and Rachel are happily dating, but tensions grow when Rachel leaves her waitressing job at Central Park to pursue a career in fashion at Bloomingdale's. Ross becomes increasingly jealous of Rachel's co-worker, Mark, creating strains in their relationship.
Speaker: Their argument eventually leads to the famous, we were on a break situation. when Rachel suggests taking a break from the relationship and Ross sleeps with the other woman, Chloe, from the copy place.
Speaker: Rachel is devastated when she finds out and the two break up in one of the series' most emotional storylines. And meanwhile, Monica Geller struggles to move on from Richard and later in the season begins dating wealthy businessman Pete Becker.
Speaker: Although Pete genuinely does care for her, the relationship falls apart when he becomes obsessed with with becoming the ultimate fighting champion. Meanwhile, Joey's pursuing his acting career and develops feelings for fellow actress Kate Miller while starring in a play. Their romance, however, is short-lived after Kate leaves for a role in Los Angeles.
Speaker: Joey and Chandler also adopt a chick and a duck, creating some of the season's funniest moments. Phoebe Buffay discovers more about her unusual family history. She reconnects with her half-brother Frank Jr. and eventually meets her biological mother Phoebe Abbott during the season finale.
Speaker: And the season ends with the gang visiting a beach house where lingering feelings between Ross and Rachel start to resurface. Ross has to choose between Rachel and his new girlfriend Bonnie after Rachel admits she still loves him ending the season on a cliffhanger.
Speaker: That was such a nice little recap. Oh, yeah, thank you. That was very nice. And as i'm I'm looking through, like I made a list of like all the episodes, right? And then put in the names and then like what we, I, I scored them and then who my favorite character was, but,
Speaker: Man, a lot happened in this season. A lot. Right. I mean, the Princess Leia fantasy and then the one where nobody's ready, where we had Steve, where this seems like a long time ago.
Speaker: sure does. There's so much in this season. um Yeah. Yeah. I'm looking forward to finding out kind of what you think about everything that happened. Yeah. um Let's see, why do we start off with our Gunther Central Parks for the season.
Speaker: Okay. you, I think I've just tallied mine up and just taken that as my Gunther Central Park for the season rather than reinventing the wheel. Where did you land on this?
Speaker: Okay. So I was actually really surprised because, you know, as it goes, this is months long that we spend doing this. And then it's like, I don't really remember. So I was going through and I did not have Chandler as a Gunther Central perk for an episode until episode 13. 13 out of And there was one episode.
Speaker: in the tra and and there was one episode It was the one with a a duck. where I couldn't decide between Ross and Chandler. So I like half, right?
Speaker: So even though Chandler was not on my list anywhere until episode 13, he came out as my top one with four and a half episodes that he was won with me.
Speaker: That's kind of fantastic. yeah um i'm just I've tallied mine up. I was just looking. yeah In the first half of the season, i only had Chandler in there twice, i think. the one with The one with the metaphorical tunnel and then where Chandler can't remember which sister, which I think is still in the first half.
Speaker: ah Those are the only two, i believe, where I chose Chandler. So that's that's really interesting we have a similar pattern there. Yeah. Yeah. Okay.
Speaker: So, and then Joey was my number two because he got four. Right. Right behind. so that is So, Chandler is my for the whole season.
Speaker: Interesting. It is because with the exception of the nubbin, don't know. I don't feel like...
Speaker: Well, whenever he was dating, he had a lot of side quest stories. Yeah, yeah, a lot this. But that's really his main storyline.
Speaker: Yeah, I agree. um A lot of kind of the B plots that we talked about, um i think, feature him. So it was Chandler number one for you, and then Joey came in came in second?
Speaker: Like right behind, with a half a point left. Now, I'm curious. I don't like to you know dwell on the negative, but who got the least amount? Out of the main six characters, who got the least for you?
Speaker: Oh, okay. I was like, well, Pete got one and Vince got one. Yes, yes. So they don't count. Would you care to guess? I'm going to guess Phoebe.
Speaker: Oh, hang on a sec. Yeah. I forgot to count Rachel's. Ah. Oh, but no. Okay, you guessed who? I'm guessing Phoebe.
Speaker: No. No. Ross. But Phoebe is right next to him. Ross got one and a half because of that one. Of course it's Ross.
Speaker: Of course it's Ross. Yeah. what That was a foolish mistake on my part. Come on now. Yeah. Do I even know you at this point? Yeah. Well, hang on. Rachel was, she got four as well. So, so it was Chandler with Rachel and Joey right behind.
Speaker: Nice. Nice. Well, we've got some similarities and some different, Oh, you know, i mean who got one? Were there any honorable mentions? You mentioned Pete, right? And then Vince. Yeah. um Was there anyone else in there?
Speaker: Janice got two. Janice got two. I love it. Yeah. um Janice is so funny. She's great. And we haven't seen her in a long time. Right. Don't worry.
Speaker: Coming back. If there was an argument for a seventh friend, I think we may have talked about that too. Without a doubt, i would add into the mix. Yeah. Would be Janice. Well, we've definitely got some similarities and then some differences. Yeah.
Speaker: I ended it up with a tie for number one, which I was surprised with. And it's both Joey and Chandler. They came in tied for me.
Speaker: um Perhaps even more surprising, Phoebe only got one vote from me the entire season. Wow. Which I love Phoebe. Phoebe's a great character. i'm not I don't know why, um but that's the way it worked out. She only got one vote.
Speaker: Maybe in her strong episodes, there was just somebody that was stronger, you know? Yeah, it was the one where Ross and Rachel take a break. I had Phoebe as my my Gunther Central Park. um But she just got the one vote. And i got I've got three honorable mentions, I believe. I think I've got Mr. Heckles, Pete, and then Carol. Was Mr. Heckles in this episode?
Speaker: let me Yeah, I was just thinking, he's that was that was season two, right? I've just realized I've written that down. Where did I get that from? Oh, yeah, the one always with the flashback. Oh, yeah. Yeah, that's right. Because that is the last time that we see him. Yes, he is. The one with the flashback. Yeah, and neither one of us, you gave it to Mr. Hackles, and I gave it to Janice.
Speaker: Yeah, isn't that funny? And I gave it, I scored it low, too. Yeah, that's interesting. because Yeah, Janice is a huge favorite of mine, that character. um Let's look at trivia because I've tallied up our trivia. We decided like a quarter a quarter of the way through to start keeping score. So this doesn't add up to 25 however from many episodes are in the season. Yeah.
Speaker: but Let's see. So it will come to no surprise to our listeners that you comfortably won. Comfortable is even a little too light. You demolished me. You came away with 10 victories.
Speaker: We tied five times and I won a measly three. Room for growth on my end. Wow. Yeah. Five times. five times. That's awesome. Yeah, out of the 18, we tied five. Okay.
Speaker: We came away with 10. So it's on this season, though. I'm warmed up. I'm ready. We'll see what happens. See what happens. Season four. And before I go any farther, I will end up forgetting um we've got some trivia we've got some season three trivia which we usually start with but we're doing things a little differently because this is a review so we were sent uh five questions each and we're this one's just for fun we're not going to keep score with this one because it's so yeah please don't because mine that were shared with me are hard right and i'm like oh gosh
Speaker: Well, i tell we'll keep score just for fun between us here, but it won't go in the the score book for the whole season, for season four. um Let's see. I guess this is technically even because this would be the 26th episode of the season. So who goes first on even episodes?
Speaker: Let's see. Is that you or me? Say that again. On even episodes? Oh, that's you. right. So I'll go first this time. My question for you is, what is the name of the infomercial the friends were watching that appeared Joey pouring the milk?
Speaker: And the host, I forget his name, all of a sudden says, welcome back to something. Oh, Amazing Adventures. Or Amazing Inventions. You get it. It's amazing discoveries, I believe.
Speaker: But again, we're playing fast and loose. It's the end of the season party. Okay. All right. All right. So what is the name of the mannequin head that Joey uses when he's practicing for his role for days of our lives?
Speaker: Oh, you said Mannequin Head, and I was just thinking of um ah Crazy Eddie, who turns it into the chip bowl at parties. Oh, yeah. I was like, does that have a name? Oh, I can picture the scene.
Speaker: I do not know his name. It's a her. A her. I don't remember. alia No, I do not recall. Yeah, these are tricky. Yeah, right. Because I think...
Speaker: and Because does Chandler walk in and he's talking to him? I think so. and And so then he's like, you know, nobody will practice my lines. ah Yeah, yeah. No, that sounds right. Like said, we didn't come up with these questions, so they're going to be challenging. Yeah, they are.
Speaker: This one I think you're going to get. I'm confident. Can you name three of Joey's sister's?
Speaker: Mary Catherine.
Speaker: It's Mary something. There's two Mary somethings. Mary Angela. Yep. And not Mary Catherine? No.
Speaker: Uh-oh. Mary Angela. um And then there's the one that punches them in the face. Yep.
Speaker: Yep.
Speaker: Um... Oh my gosh, Al. yeah it's It's one of those things, it's easy when you have the list in front of you, but when you don't, it's really difficult.
Speaker: Yeah. um
Speaker: And we don't get, I must say, we don't get all the names in this season. I think there's two we don't. We get them at other points.
Speaker: Um...
Speaker: Yeah. i had doodooooo dooo That's right. We should have the Jeopardy music going. Wow. um Okay. Mary Angela. Is Catherine one of them? Like Catherine?
Speaker: No, there is one that sound that starts with the hard K sound. yeah ah Katie, Kelly, Camille.
Speaker: I don't know. Shelley? There's no Shelly. There's no Shelly. I don't know. all right. lets Some of these were were clear when you hit some were not. There's Gina. There's Mary Angela. Gina's the one that punches them.
Speaker: That is kooky. Oh, Kuki! Yeah, that was the hard case. Kuki, Dina, Gina, Mary Angela, Mary Therese. That was the one. And then there's Tina and Veronica are named, but I don't think they're in season three.
Speaker: um Okay. Yes. God, that was hard. That was tricky. Okay, here's something tricky and random. Give it to me. Good luck. All right. ah What year did Phoebe's mom graduate from high school? 1965.
Speaker: nineteen sixty five Because we talked about that. Yeah. yeah And then we yeah you did all the math and I was like, so yeah, that's right. that's Wow. the only reason recall is because that took a little bit of time.
Speaker: um All right. What is the nickname that Jack Geller calls Monica? Harmonica. Harmonica. Yes. ah There's little harmonica.
Speaker: All right. um What song does Rachel think is the most romantic song ever? Oh, it's not The Way You Look Tonight.
Speaker: No. No, I don't know. You're very close, though. Okay. It's definitely The Way. Right. The way you look tonight. That's what i said. um That's what you said. Yeah. Nope. Let's give the same answer with confidence. ah The way. No, I don't know.
Speaker: The way we were. ah Yeah. the way I think Brian's song is what that was from. But I don't know 100%. That sounds right. Because we talked about the movie it was from.
Speaker: Yes, that's right. This one was was curated just for you because we had to get a moon-dense diner question in there. Oh, okay. What are the fries called?
Speaker: Oh, man. Yep. ah It's a pun. I know.
Speaker: ah is it the laverne and curly fries it certainly is yeah it certainly is from deep in the vault yeah yeah that took me a minute to get oh man the moon dance diner that we will never see again a precious little place in that truly a universe man So I double checked that answer and I did stumble across some trivia that it is the same diner that is used. um
Speaker: that When I say Spider-Man, the Spider-Man movie to me is Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. That's that's it The weight the the um restaurant she works in, it's the same set, which is just kind of fun.
Speaker: That is fun. That is fun, actually. ah All right. I think I've got one more from you. Is that right? No, I've got two because you went first.
Speaker: Okay. Okay. Perfect. All right. How much money does Monica tell Joey that she owes for eating that he owes her for eating the jar of olives?
Speaker: And that's a question that we had like in our our trivia or if it was one that both of us asked. I don't remember.
Speaker: You know what's funny? I don't really remember, but swear ends in a five. Like, it could be 355, 245, 275, 285...
Speaker: two forty fiveve two seventy five to to eighty five $2.95. Yes!
Speaker: Good job! Diem was giving me thumbs up and thumbs down. There we go. No, Al, I would have never said that. Never said a thing. No. yeah Yes, nice job.
Speaker: Thank you. Yeah, yeah i got miss I got off on the questions because I skipped one accidentally because I have, I think, a final one for you, which is whose voice is on the hypnosis tape that Chandler listens to?
Speaker: is it Jane Fonda? is not Jane Fonda. No, it is not. It is the... It's the lady, the, um, the lady, the main lady that writes. Yes.
Speaker: Yeah. h Half a point at least. Yep. The main lady. Not Monica. Her name is not Monica. No, but you're good you're going in the right direction with the first letter.
Speaker: Okay. Great. Her name is Marta Kaufman. Yeah, it Yeah. Yes. That's it. Okay.
Speaker: Okay. Do you have one final one for me? I do. Okay, back on track. This takes us all the way back to the one where no one's ready.
Speaker: Okay. All right. And remember whenever ross Ross calls Phoebe something because she's the only one that's ready.
Speaker: Yes. And she calls him something. What does she call him? Oh, that's be great question. Because he says, like, you're my shining star something like that. And she goes, you're my.
Speaker: When you said shining star, I could then hear in my head that she says, and you're my lucky penny. Nice job. Yes, I didn't get it until you said that, and it it activated something in my head.
Speaker: There you go. Yeah, because he must have said. He must have really said that because I don't know why that would have come out of my head or out of my mouth. Yep. Whatever.
Speaker: and nice Nice work with our review, our trivia review. um So I suppose we'll kind of end this little episode on looking at it what were your favorite episodes. Oh, there's something. What is it? Oh, no. What I wanted to also talk about is that whenever we were rating them, yes I thought it was funny to...
Speaker: kind of make a note of and i didn't start keeping track until episode seven but we started rating them instead of stars or how much whatever mugs of coffee or whatever and so i was just gonna share some of the things that i love this because i have not kept track of that so i love that you have All right. So we have some market price lobsters. Uh, we have, ah bumps on the bed jumps on the bed. I bet is what that's supposed to say because bumps on the bed.
Speaker: Hmm. That was the one with the giant poking device.
Speaker: Yes. At the end, is that whenever Joey's jumping on the bed and then ends up with his arm in the sling because he had heard it in the episode prior? Yeah, when when he jumps up back on the the the essence of the chair. Yeah. yeah Okay, and then we have some basted turkeys, as some trees, some cups of yentl soup, pairs of jazz shoes, some nubbins,
Speaker: Some 400% copies, waxing strips, hypnosis tapes, t-shirts, dolls, ducks and chicks, um hot coffees, burning cars,
Speaker: And then bald heads with moonlight bouncing off. That's right. What a strange, eclectic, and wonderful list. It is. That's now you are being designated as official list keeper of that. So we could do this again in six months or whenever it is. Yeah, whenever it is.
Speaker: I love it. All right. So yeah, let's, we could yeah end this with our favorites. I think that's a good way to go. um What was your overall favorite episode this, especially this semester? We're both teachers and we're both tired. This season. So mine was the one the morning after with 10 vaccine strips.
Speaker: Indeed. that I love it. That was i was so good. And I'll just tell you now, that was joint favorite for me. That one. Because that that one was all over. It was hilarious and serious and feelings and so much happened. There's so much that was iconic yeah about that whole episode. oh the All the things. Yeah. have All the the parts you want.
Speaker: Yeah, and the, we were on a break. can icon The most famous line, i would argue, from the whole show. Yeah, I had the one with the morning after and that was tied as as nine out of ten with the one where no one's ready. And I love that they're so different. And I love them both for different reasons.
Speaker: yeah To me, the one where no one's ready is so clever because it's all in the one room. Yeah. um So very different reasons, but both equally fantastic. Any final thoughts on as season three before we move on to season four?
Speaker: Just thanks, Sal. Thank you very much for doing this whole thing and with me and having this whole adventure. I just am very thankful to be sharing it.
Speaker: And I am with you. It wouldn't be the Purple Door Podcast without you at all. So I just love that this show has brought us together in this awesome way.
Speaker: um But yeah, with that being said, we'll be back with season four, starting with obviously episode one, the one with the jellyfish next week. But as always, thank you everybody for listening to the Purple Door Podcast.
