Introduction and Episode Setup

00:00:04
Speaker
Well, hello, welcome to this week's episode of the Purple Door podcast, a friend's rewatch pod. I'm one of your hosts, Alistair, alongside Deanne, of course. Deanne, how are you this evening?
00:00:17
Speaker
I'm doing very well, Al. How are you? Yeah, doing wonderful. It's been pouring with rain most of the day, but it's nice, cool weather, which I'm enjoying immensely. There you go. Yeah. A little dreary. little dreer Yeah, a little dreary. It's all right.
00:00:33
Speaker
Yeah, it's going to warm up before we know it. Yeah, it will. Yeah, it will. It will be hotter than the face of the sun. Absolutely. Well, let's see. Today we are discussing the one with the dollhouse.
00:00:49
Speaker
Yes. I watched a couple of days ago, but then also rewatched it earlier today. yeah to kind of Just to kind of refresh myself on this episode. Okay. Then that means I know you're ready. But that's kind of funny because I watched it a couple of days ago, but I knew that we weren't going to record for a few more days. So I just watched it for fun.
00:01:11
Speaker
And then I went and watched it this this morning with all my notes and all the things. I feel like we're putting a lot of pressure on ourselves for bamboozles. I know. Because we're admitting to both having watched it twice.
00:01:25
Speaker
it's Seriously. but i as long as you don't ask me how many whys in that one scene where she's like, why won't you call me? why, why, why? wow That would have been a great question, but no, that is not one of mine. Okay, great. Because I was like, I should probably go back and count how many whys, because I feel like that's an owl question. That that should have, would have, could have been.
00:01:52
Speaker
that ah i'm now i'm now having a tinge of regret not asking that. But well let's see. Who goes first this week? This is an even episode, so it's you All right. Fantastic. Well, I'm going to start off with hey what invoice does Joanna say she needs when she meets Chandler?
00:02:16
Speaker
It's the Versace. It is indeed. And you're off to a strong start. Nice. All right. Who does the dollhouse originally belong to?
00:02:27
Speaker
That is Aunt Sylvia. very nice Very nice. All right. No messing around straight in with the answer because I was 90% sure.

Quiz and Episode Details

00:02:39
Speaker
Aunt Sylvia.
00:02:40
Speaker
Yeah. All right. Let's see. My question two for you. What theater is Joey performing at? The Lucille Lortel Theater, which is an actual real theater off Broadway.
00:02:56
Speaker
It is right there. Yeah, that is it. You are two for two. Awesome. Okay. See, I, okay. And the only reason I paid attention was because I saw it outside. I was like, I know that he's going remember. You already knew. Yes. Yes.
00:03:13
Speaker
All right. Excellent. All right. What have you got for me? That means me. What happened to Phoebe's dollhouse?
00:03:23
Speaker
Well, there was a fire in the aroma room. That is true. Bonus point. If you can tell me. why wasn't Ross able to put the fire out quickly?
00:03:39
Speaker
Well, let's see. i remember the scene. He's throwing some water on it. Why couldn't he put it out? quick I don't remember that. I don't remember.
00:03:50
Speaker
Okay. So because Monica was in the shower, the sink was not putting water. Gotcha. at

Character Dynamics and Comedy

00:03:59
Speaker
all So I would have, but you know, fun, fun. A little bonus, a little bonus.
00:04:06
Speaker
Yeah. All right. My question three for you, and I'm going to ask you to complete this line. and it is from the director.
00:04:16
Speaker
And he says, it's time to act. And what does he call the people on the stage? Oh, my ah talking props? My talking props. You are three for three. Nice. All right.
00:04:33
Speaker
Why doesn't Chandler like Joanne? Because she has mascara. Well, she's ah she's a dull dud, but then the mascara goop in the corner of her eye. Yes.
00:04:46
Speaker
Which is such ah a Chandler thing to to find such a tiny detail. But yes, but ah I could, I don't know. That could bother me too. Right. You become fixated on it. Oh, for sure. Absolutely.
00:05:03
Speaker
So let's see. Question four for you. Because they are getting off early, what does Lauren suggest she and Joey go and do? That they go paint mugs. It's exactly what they're going to do. They're going to go and paint mugs. Which is so random.
00:05:20
Speaker
So random. Have you ever been to one of those like painting? um like I know you've done painting with a twist, but like ah where you paint the ceramic stuff?
00:05:32
Speaker
I don't think so. I know the ones you're talking about, like Time to Kiln and various other kind of plays on that. I don't think so. you ever done it? Yeah, we actually last summer, Joseph and I did that for our anniversary. And we got a mug that like it or it's two mugs, but they fit together like puzzle. And that's so fun. Painted. we each painted one for the other person and then they fit together.
00:06:00
Speaker
And I think I'm I'm the only one who's drank out of my like they sit. As an art piece. and That's because he is saving his. It's too precious, I am sure. Too precious. Yes.
00:06:15
Speaker
All right. My fourth question, from you to me. Yes. All right. So ah number four. ah Can you name at least four things that were Phoebe's toys? Don't count the dollhouse.
00:06:29
Speaker
Okay. There's the big dog. Yeah. There's the ghost. to Oh, there's a dinosaur.
00:06:41
Speaker
And this is where I'm going to come unstuck. I'm assuming it's in this scene, that the toys that she's, or it could be any. Okay, she has, I mean, she has a Tootsie Roll bed, but that's kind of in the other scene. That's in her dollhouse. Oh, no.
00:06:57
Speaker
Okay, wait. Yeah, I would count that because the other toys that I have on my list are from that other scene. Or not that scene, but another scene later.
00:07:08
Speaker
Okay, yeah, she has the Tootsie Roll bed. There's the, I mean, there's the bubbles that come out. There's the, um the the is it licorice stairs? Or the sta there's a slide set of stairs, all that kind of stuff.
00:07:21
Speaker
Mm-hmm. Yeah. And then, what ah do you remember the things that made it out of the fire? Oh. That survived the whole... mean, you've said way more than four.
00:07:34
Speaker
i mean... and All right, but I know that there's something underneath like a hanky that got burned. Oh, yeah. There's two things that they give her that made it with no problem. And they go, don't look under there. Don't look under there. Oh, no.
00:07:48
Speaker
It's the... I don't remember. That's that that's right. And then the um there's the pirate and the giraffe. They made it out of the fire.
00:08:00
Speaker
Good. I'm glad they made

Workplace Humor and Joey's Journey

00:08:02
Speaker
it. All right. Well, you're about to go five, maybe five or five for five the second, at least the second week in a row. let's see how you got with this. Was I five for five last week? You were indeed. Nice. and this this is This is a little different and it could be a little tricky, but we'll see. Okay. All right. So you asked me where the dollhouse came from earlier, Aunt Sylvia. Aunt Sylvia has been mentioned in Friends twice before.
00:08:30
Speaker
Can you remember either time, either scenario? one was at Nana's, whenever she died, Aunt Sylvia was the one at the hospital.
00:08:44
Speaker
Yes, that she was there. yeah and then... Just for bonus. She was also... Was she the one that was there going through all the things?
00:08:56
Speaker
So I was thinking about that. i I think she probably was. It's not one of the other two I've got. The other two I've got is just when she was mentioned, she wasn't actually seen. Okay.
00:09:10
Speaker
And do they call her Great Aunt Sylvia? No, they call, they they say the words Aunt Syl. She's the one with the lasagnas. That's it. That's one of the last the two I've got.
00:09:24
Speaker
Okay, excellent. So you've got it. The last one was when Chandler tries to grow mustache, Monica says he looks like their Aunt Sylvia. There you go. The only other time she's mentioned, but you got five out of five.
00:09:39
Speaker
Oh, I'm nice. Alright, you already have kind of done this, but whatever. You named three cool aspects of Phoebe's dollhouse.
00:09:51
Speaker
Alright, so there's yeah there's the Tootsie Roll bed, there's the slide. is it a licorice room? Yes. Alright, good. Yeah, and then the the removable wall. They all went, ooh. Oh, that's right. And then the bubbles. Yeah, and the bubbles.
00:10:10
Speaker
Did you happen have any bonus questions? I do. I have three more. All right. You've got three. So why don't you go first for the bonus questions? All right. What's the director's name?
00:10:22
Speaker
Okay. Do we find out in this episode? Okay. Because I was convinced his name is Marcus, but I don't remember where I heard it. Oh. It might not I wrote down Marshall.
00:10:33
Speaker
Okay. It might well be Marshall. because i do I thought it was Marcus, but then I didn't see it. So I missed it. martin you know You know what, Marshall? I think in the next episode you're right because he says Marshall Townen or something when he's reading the review in the paper.
00:10:51
Speaker
So i think I think you're right. Yeah. Deanna's now double checking. Yeah, I have to do because I'm wacky. But yeah, I wrote down Marshall. I think you're right. now that say i like Either way. Yeah. um Man, we were both five for five today. That's awesome. We were. This is kind of fantastic. um What two things does Phoebe say Monica's dollhouse could be built on?
00:11:20
Speaker
Oh. ah A radioactive waste or an Indian burial ground? you um You have got them both. Yeah. All right. Well, she got from me.
00:11:34
Speaker
all right. What did Chandler want from Rachel's work? Wait. Did you ask me that one? I did not. No. That was ah okay like a a lingerie magazine or to see the models.
00:11:48
Speaker
or So, yeah, the magazine. The summer catalog. The summer catalog. Yes. Let's see. My last question for you is, what does Chandler say the name Bing means? And if you can name the language for an extra bonus point. ah Gaelic, it means thy turkeys done. Indeed it does. Yes. Yeah. All right.
00:12:13
Speaker
What did Chandler and Joanne do for their dates?
00:12:19
Speaker
Oh, that's a good question. i know they

Emotional Depth and Conclusion

00:12:21
Speaker
went to lunch for the second one. The first one, i know it was a, you know, Chandler talks about crisp New York evening. So they'll go on for a walk after whatever they did.
00:12:34
Speaker
Oh, I'm going to have to guess dinner and a movie. Couldn't enjoy any of it. Yeah. Cause she's such a big dull dud. I'm just going to have to guess it didn't like dinner or dinner and or a movie.
00:12:47
Speaker
Yep. A movie, dinner, and then a walk. And then lunch. Look at us go. Look at us go. We should watch these episodes twice every time, apparently. it's I mean, we're, I mean, obviously. It's like we're, I don't even know what it's called.
00:13:06
Speaker
Yeah. Geniuses. We're just that good. We have a podcast or something. don't know. know. It's kind of crazy. Kind of crazy. Well, let's get stuck into this episode. We're going to start off in the girls' apartment. Joey is still down in the dumps about Kate, his co-star in his theatre production.
00:13:24
Speaker
And he's never known what it's like to want a girl who doesn't want him back. But this must be what Chandler feels like. Right, right. Well, and then, oh, wait, it's later. Whenever Rachel's talking about, they always call.
00:13:41
Speaker
Yes, yeah, the same thing. bite me. yes um Ross comes in and he with some sad news. He tells Monica that Aunt Sylvia has passed away. She's pretty excited about this news. ah Evidently, she didn't like Aunt Sylvia one bit.
00:13:59
Speaker
um yeah But she did like her dollhouse. so but That she wasn't allowed to play with. That's right. and that is a pretty ah you know I'm not well versed in dollhouses per se, but it's a pretty cool looking dollhouse.
00:14:14
Speaker
like I imagine it was ah probably worth a little bit of money or took a lot of time to put together. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Okay. So whenever I was growing up, I had a Barbie dream house. Right. It wasn't like, i I don't know if it was the Barbie dream house or not, but it just had like the cardboard backing and it had this really cool elevator. It was really just an elevator that just kind of snapped in. And then you'd pull the string and it would go up and you'd put your Barbie in there and go up and down. And it was three levels. It was really That's pretty fancy.
00:14:55
Speaker
And then I also had dollhouse, like an actual dollhouse, like this one, where it's smaller and kind of, you know, shrunk down a little bit. And it has like the real furniture and all of that. And it was so fun. But I always like my Barbies, they had like a neighborhood.
00:15:15
Speaker
And so even though my Barbies were too big to play in the dollhouse, like they all played everywhere because the Barbies were the best. Absolutely. But I feel like you probably don't have any. any Did you have a dollhouse?
00:15:32
Speaker
I did not. I have a dollhouse. I did not, and I was trying to think, I've got two older sisters, and I don't remember either of them having one. Maybe they did, and I don't recall, but I don't think so. Did I say Susan?
00:15:46
Speaker
That was wrong. Yeah. no okay but anyway yes but let's see well we we monica gets the dollhouse but we know phoebe didn't have one do you remember what phoebe had instead she had a barrel but not instead of a dollhouse she just had a barrel she just had a barrel which is f it's such a phoebe thing to own uh she probably had a lot of fun with that barrel um Yeah.
00:16:15
Speaker
And for whatever reason on this computer, and I think this is the last week I'm going to use this one, but I can't pull up my like cut scenes. Right. And so, but well as I was watching this episode, I was like, I feel like they would probably have cut that. Whenever she was saying that, um ah that Sylvia was saying, you know, that it's to be looked at and never played with.
00:16:41
Speaker
It's only to be looked at. right yes and then chandler makes a comment about how his grandma would say that all the time yes that was in yes oh okay that was in there yeah yeah that was kept in oh yeah okay well then never mind and then the thing where she could lose 20 pounds and she could play with it and then she's like and oh that was cut that wasn't in there oh okay so after that and he's like well it's a bathtub situation and then monica
00:17:13
Speaker
Or um Ross is like, I don't know why you're acting like that. She said you could play with it if you lost 20 pounds. And she's like, yeah, but look who's losing weight now. Oh, that was cut. Yeah. yeah Okay. Well, there you go. nice Yeah. i kind of felt like all of it was going to be.
00:17:32
Speaker
Yeah, no, just that last bit. um Let's see, we go over to Bloomingdale's. Chandler and Rachel been out to lunch, which is nice. i think it's nice that he's taken Rachel out to lunch. Doesn't seem to be any particular reason for doing that. And this is where we I think this is the first time, right, we've met or meet Joanna.
00:17:51
Speaker
yeah No, this isn't the first time. No, have we met her already? Uh-huh, because they had, um because she was on there, because she's been mean to Sophie before.
00:18:03
Speaker
Ah, um Yeah. Yeah, that does ring a bell. Oh, when is it when when when ross is um is it when Ross is being jealous with the love bugs and all of that? Do we see her then?
00:18:16
Speaker
Maybe, maybe. Because I'm trying to think, because after Mark left, I don't know that we met Joanne until after Mark left. Right. But Mark and her were both working for her For Joanne. Yes. Yeah. And then they hired Sophie to take Mark's place. That's right.
00:18:37
Speaker
So I don't know. but Yeah, we've seen her before, but but not often. Right. Well, she comes out and she's so she certainly never met Chandler before. And this is where, i you know i don't know if there's any chemistry straight off the bat, but she seems nice enough. And this is where she finds out what his last name apparently means. And I guess she thinks that is awfully cute. um And she asked Rachel if, you know, what's wrong with him and if he's single and Rachel. She's like, what's wrong with him? And she says, he's just goofy like that. Like I don't notice it anymore. And I was like, dang. Yeah. And Matthew Perry is so thin right now. Yes.
00:19:21
Speaker
Like so thin. i don't know. And I thought it like, um, like in the very first scene, whenever he's sitting up on the bookcase, like while they're eating pizza,
00:19:35
Speaker
And then I thought it in that in this scene, too, whenever he's standing there, and then later whenever they're standing in the office and he's... dancing over to her. yes He's so very thin. He is. there' There's a definite, you can see where his health was, he was having health struggles up and down you know throughout the the entire series. And this is one of those times he clearly lost um quite a bit of weight. Because again, I noticed it and then I was thinking, well, is it just again the big suit? Spids not. He's definitely...
00:20:08
Speaker
yeah Definitely on the thinner side in this in this episode. We go back to the girls' apartment and Monica's looking looking at her dollhouse. I think just having a great time. and Yeah, she is. Phoebe comes in with a big box of stuff.
00:20:24
Speaker
What's the other? Yeah, the dog, the dinosaur, the ghost. And she's coming up with just these fantastic stories. shea I love it.
00:20:35
Speaker
And it makes me sad because... I don't know. I could see like if I was wanting to be so very particular about my play with the Victorian dollhouse. But I mean, obviously I played, you know, with the Barbies and that are this tall. And then like the floors were this tall. So, you know, they going down the stairs and stuff, but like,
00:21:02
Speaker
I don't know. i wonder if she was always like that. So very particular and she's like Aunt Sylvia, right? Right, exactly. Maybe the apple's not falling too far from that tree and that's why they struggled to get along.
00:21:18
Speaker
Yeah. If they were very similar. yeah the house of no imagination yeah i do feel for phoebe in this scene because she is truly channeling her inner child and monica's kind of squashing it um which is a shame rachel comes in i do love this scene where she's like i need to talk to you and ross assumes it's him and it has to make a sort of awkward exit yeah just kind of it was to say like well if you need something you know where to find me or something yeah and then i love it so much when rachel is talking to chandlin saying that joanna's interested and he he gives the now how does he phrase it check it out the chan chan the chan chan man
00:22:10
Speaker
It's so nerdy and so fantastic. um But yeah, he seems he seems to think that Joanna's all right, and he's certainly willing to go on a date with her. um And then we cut back over to Monica and Phoebe, and she's Monica's had enough. She said that these things don't really fit in a Victorian dollhouse.
00:22:31
Speaker
and uh ross is then doing ross things and correcting phoebe's dinosaur not you know just let her be don't kick her when she's down just no but he latches on you know yeah let that go We can't let that go. I don't know. Yeah, that was so sad, right? And then that's she's like, we aren't welcome at the house with no imagination. It's it's a fantastic line, isn't it? it's just gear I feel for Phoebe a lot in this moment.
00:23:06
Speaker
we We cut back over to the the theater. I'll tell you that Joey's drinking coffee from a plain white mug. Put that in my notes. Wow! Yeah, and did you notice that it was smoking?
00:23:19
Speaker
Yes. And I thought that was interesting because as much coffee as they drink in this show, you never see it smoking. Right. Yeah. That stuff was clearly freshly made.
00:23:32
Speaker
And yeah that's so funny because, yeah, I noticed that, but I did not ask you at all about it. No. not if it's not in the apartment or that or Central Perk, I guess I just don't care. Yeah, I i now just, I have to look. I think it's going to be part of my re-watching process now is looking for that. um Kate comes in, but she doesn't really talk to him. And then Joey meets Lauren, the understudy, who is a huge fan of his.
00:24:03
Speaker
And she's anytime days of our lives is mentioned, i have to write down dual just because it makes me smile. So in my notes, she scheduled her classes around dual. And I was going to ask you if you, especially in your college days, did you ever miss a class or schedule a class so you could be home to watch a certain show or an event?
00:24:29
Speaker
and No. No. no But we did have a routine on Wednesday nights where we watch South Park and WWE.
00:24:43
Speaker
And then we would go out dancing. I like it. That was the the routine. And did i care too much about any of it? No, not really.
00:24:55
Speaker
But could sing you everybody's like opening songs for that time, that period. That's whatever The Rock was on there and China and all of them. those people get that. I was never into it because that's my era. I was going to say, were you?
00:25:14
Speaker
No, it wasn't my thing, but those are the names I know. Like, I know those people. We're recording this. I'm recording this in our office at home, and Kate is working at her desk. And I think we'd miss class, or at least a class, to watch 90210. And All My Children. Oh, yes. I did not do night classes, though. And All My Children? All My Children.
00:25:39
Speaker
my gosh.
00:25:42
Speaker
Oh, your microphone. Say one more time. I had no idea. Oh, it's because I got too loud. I think your microphone. Go go for it. Okay. Can you hear me? okay Yes. Clearly. I had no idea that Kate and I were on like this, this same wavelength.
00:26:01
Speaker
Of course we are. Of course you are. If Erica Kane is not the most fanciest lady of the universe. Is Erica Kane. Oh, she's on the phone. Not the fanciest lady in the universe.
00:26:15
Speaker
She is. then Stuart has that terrible twin brother, Adam. And um Chandler was a very, very not. Or Stuart. Stuart?
00:26:29
Speaker
Chandler? Maybe their last name is Chandler. I don't know. Anyway, Stuart and Adam. Adam was the evil twin and Stuart was the very nice twin.
00:26:39
Speaker
o Yeah, I had no idea. I've never seen an episode of it, but that was very important. for I watched that from the time like I was little, little, little, little with my mom.
00:26:52
Speaker
and And the cool thing was is that you could go to school for an entire school year and come back in the summer and everybody would still be there. That's right. And Kate's just told me, yeah, jeni so Jennifer Aniston's dad starred on in it.
00:27:08
Speaker
Days of Our Lives. Yes, he sure did. Yes. No, no. All My Children. Not Days of Our Lives. No, On Days of Our Lives. Oh. Days of Our Lives? Yeah, I don't know.
00:27:21
Speaker
Okay. Okay. Ask her. No, tell her I am like fixated on this all my children like connection that we have. Right. Well, you guys will have to discuss this at length. Yes. Yes. Yes. Okay.
00:27:36
Speaker
I love it. well No, no. You're fine. This podcast went off track in and in the most wonderful way. you know In a hurry. in ah in a hurry. hurry, yes. um But yeah, they agree to go out for coffee the next day. Lauren's kind of fun.
00:27:52
Speaker
you know, she's a little starstruck, which Joey can't quite believe. But yeah, she seems like a sort of fun individual. Well, especially considering because he just got like beat down by Kate and had everybody making fun of him. And he was feeling real low about his acting abilities. And then this Lauren pops in and she is, you know, starstruck. And then, you you know, and he's so funny with the shaft um play on the word. Yes. Yes. All that, you know, so. Yes, he's just smitten.
00:28:30
Speaker
um And then he agreed to go get a drink or coffee or something because just right then ah Kate happened to be kissing the director. That's right. And then he looks over and he saw that and then he's like, sure.
00:28:45
Speaker
Why not? Why not? We go back over to the girl's apartment and Phoebe brings over her handmade dollhouse, which Ross and Rachel think is cool and I think is fantastic.
00:28:57
Speaker
Yeah, it's great. Yes. A lot hard work has gone into that. I think it's cut out cardboard, but the imagination and all, good for Phoebe. Yes, she's got slide instead of the stairs and the liquor troupe. And then if if guest comes over, they sleep on the Tootsie Roll bed. yeah And then you know Monica's jealous, right? Because she's like, did you see my new China cabinet? And they're like, man yeah they But at the same time, there's something so fun, like playing and and putting little china pieces in a china cabinet. I don't know. I get it. I think I kind of get it. like um Again, never had a dollhouse, but we went to, the when was it? Months ago now, just off the the Denton Square where we live, somebody had made, is it called the diorama, where it's all scaled down and tiny? They'd made yeah basically a version of Denton
00:29:56
Speaker
with you know tiny little stores and tiny little details so cute right there's something about it that's just kind of fun making these tiny versions of things um okay and so i have a collection of tiny books like the mini brands they did this like book series right where you would buy it and then you'd get like mystery books and then you would open them up and open up the little package and then you'd have a little book but it's an actual book But they're like this big.
00:30:26
Speaker
like Oh, that's lots of fun. Like two and an inch, like an inch tall. And then they you build a little baby bookcase. So I have like all these little baby books. And you open them up and's and it comes with a magnifying glass so you can read it if you want to. But nobody is going to do that, but I did.
00:30:44
Speaker
But you did. And it brought you joy. It brought you joy. Yes. I think that's fantastic. What did not bring much joy was Joanna to Chandler. He comes in he's had his date with Joanna and says that she is a big, dull dud.
00:31:01
Speaker
He did not have a good time at all. And then it it shifts right over. Straight over to Bloomingdale's. Yeah, they just clicked. You know, it's like when people just click.
00:31:14
Speaker
Yes, and I opened the door and it was just like, click. yeah This was never going to really end well for Rachel, I think, because short of them getting married and riding off into the sunset together, Chandler and Joanne, they're going to break up at some point, and this is something that Rachel might get caught in the middle of.
00:31:34
Speaker
but Oh, absolutely. But I'm sure she was trying to keep her new boss happy. and you know just Yeah, I get it. It's getting tough for Rachel, though, at this point.
00:31:47
Speaker
Right. Yeah. we We go back over to the theater. Joey and Kate are on the stage. And Kate kind of appears to be a bit jealous of the fact that Joey and Lauren went out, um you know, calling her a sweater.
00:32:02
Speaker
Well, hang on Hang on, though. Because she's not the one that starts it. Because he's, remember, Marshall is sitting there and then he answers the phone.
00:32:16
Speaker
And then he's like, I'm going to take this call. That's right. yeah Whenever i come back, you know, the the committing to the to the moment. That's right. And then Joey's like, ah that guy's like a cartoon, which I thought was hilarious. What a line. and then that's whenever she goes, well, he's better than the sweater you're dating.
00:32:39
Speaker
That's right. Which leads into the joke about the sweater and all of that. Yes. And then it's like, oh, but wait, since when do you even care? when Do you want me to care that you care? And it starts going back and forth.
00:32:54
Speaker
Yeah, until he's just like, what? Yeah, he's lost. That's right. I kind of like, what do we decide? Marshall, right? like you I think I just like the way he's portrayed. reminds me of Eddie a bit. Just kind of crazy, kind of wacky. Yeah, wacky. Yeah, it's well acted.
00:33:16
Speaker
yeah Absolutely. But he, as you said, he storms out and Joey says that, you know, he needs to stay and work. So you can't go out with Lauren and paint mugs.
00:33:28
Speaker
um Kate says that the, you know, the scene that needs more heat. And they start getting carried away with what this is going to look like. And it flashes forward to let's assume an hour or two later and assume it's Joey's bedroom where things have moved from the theater to, again, we assume Joey's bedroom.
00:33:50
Speaker
which i think is the only time i wasn't sure do you not i was trying to look don't think it is i thought i will maybe it would be his there was no clues in the background um there were no clues but the it was like satin satin pillowcases and whenever we've seen
00:34:14
Speaker
I think no you think you're on to something. i I don't know. But I'm trying to think because I know like Chandler sheets and stuff are always um like they're like blue.
00:34:28
Speaker
Like dark blue. And so is Ross. But like cloth, cotton. cotton right And so I don't... Now I'm trying to think. Have we ever...
00:34:43
Speaker
I don't know. yeah i just I don't know. I assumed it was her place. And it might well be because we don't see I don't think in this episode we go into the boys apartment at all until the final scene. Yeah. Yeah, I think good that gets that's what really got me thinking about is this the only bit in in the show except the final scene when we're there but I really couldn't tell. um Yeah.
00:35:11
Speaker
Let's see, the next morning, Joey comes in. he is into the girls' apartment. He is grinning from ear to ear. he's got he's He's got a different walk about him.
00:35:22
Speaker
Gives Monica a hug from behind. yeah And then Ross. and and then Okay, so this line right here ah what that Ross says is so funny, and i say it a lot, and I did not realize that that's where it's from.
00:35:40
Speaker
The one where he says it's a little early to be drinking. It's a little early to be drinking. Yeah. Like, ah wow. Whoops. So I picked that up from there.
00:35:52
Speaker
Joey is just couldn't be happier. Monica drinking coffee out of a mug that has moons and the sun on it, just in case you were wondering. I'm going to keep going with everyone I've got. Okay.
00:36:05
Speaker
Do you know what I was drawn to in that scene? Tell me. Okay, on the table, on the table, there's the glass jug of milk and then the sugar and the creamer containers that match each other. And I kept looking at those and I was like, I wouldn't even know how to describe those. But that's what I was wanting to describe was the sugar and the creamer holders on the table.
00:36:33
Speaker
Interesting. Yeah, I did. Those thingss skipped past me. I didn't see them. How funny. didn't see that Let's see, Chandler. Like a liter. Not a liter.
00:36:46
Speaker
it wasn't I don't think it was a whole liter, but like a quart of milk, like in a glass bottle. like ah Yeah, in the bottle. I did see, Yeah.
00:36:57
Speaker
Yeah, <unk>ve I've seen this online throughout the years that the biggest lie friends ever told anybody was that people go over to other people's house for breakfast before going to work. yeah it's It's very true. um Yeah. But it's kind of lovely. Like, it's lovely that, you know, Ross pops over and has breakfast at his sister's house.
00:37:18
Speaker
Often. Often. Very, very often. um Yeah. it's It's a nice thing that happens. ah Chandler and Rachel come in and he thinks Joanna must be confused. Just because he said he would call her doesn't mean that he's going to call her. That's just what you say.
00:37:37
Speaker
And Rachel is bamboozled herself by this because the guys always call. Right. And Rachel's like, I mean, Monica a biton. yes you remember whatever that was like the thing to say by yeah that was it was said a lot wasn't it that's so funny i'd forgotten about that phrase till i watched this show or this episode um but again such go ahead go ahead go no but yeah that made me laugh right whenever they're going around and they're talking about all that and yeah and And oh, but before Chandler and Rachel come in and ah Joey's talking about her sleeping and knowing that she's dreaming because she's doing this. so that he's Oh, with the eyes? Because yeah they both were like, ugh.
00:38:31
Speaker
Yeah, it's kind of, yeah, that's the kind of thing if I woke up and I saw Kate's eyes fluttering like that, it would kind of wake me up. Yeah, well, and then they're having this conversation over here. She's like, bite me. And then Joey's just like, I'm so happy.
00:38:46
Speaker
Yes. He is. he's ah he's He's having a good day, is Joey. Yes, yes. I'm very, very happy for him. um we we just go i think we go back to Bloomingdale's just for a second, where Joey is asking Rachel, has Chandler called? Why hasn't he called? Why hasn't he called? And it immediately then cuts to Central Park, where she snatches the magazine. But what did I miss? She's ugly to Sophie again. Because then they start trying to give her reasons.
00:39:16
Speaker
oh what's your face oh no no i was just thinking you're right i'm trying to remember what the reasons are okay so because rachel's like you know well maybe he didn't call because you know maybe i don't remember the excuse she gave and then um sophie says you know you're it's maybe it's because he's intimidated by you because you're so successful and independent. And she's like, Sophie, crawl out of my butt.
00:39:46
Speaker
Yes. I'm like, wow. What did Sophie do to deserve this? Oh, she treats her so poorly. oh yeah. Yeah. And then she goes, well, and she goes, well, maybe he feels awkward because you're my boss. And she's like, that shouldn't make him feel awkward. That would be you. And the only reason if that would make you feel awkward is, you know, if that would make you feel awkward, which would make Chandler feel awkward. Well, there's ways to fix that.
00:40:14
Speaker
Yeah. And she kind of pauses, doesn't she? Yeah. There's ways to fix that. And then that's whenever it flips back over to Central Perk where she's like, call her, call her now, call her. Yes. and i I tried to look at what magazine Chandler was reading. I couldn't make it out. um But it did get me thinking because I was saying to Kate the other day, i i used to subscribe to National Geographic and then I don't know why it stopped. But for 60, I think it's $69 a year. I think I might resubscribe to at some point because I really as it was the last magazine that I read every time a new issue came out. And I was thinking, what was the last magazine that you read frequently, like every time an issue came out?
00:40:56
Speaker
Probably going back a few years. Oh, a lot of years. yeah Because, you know, I enjoy people, right? Like I'm at a doctor's office, and ah I don't know that they still even put those out. But like if there's a people magazine, you better believe.
00:41:13
Speaker
So like whatever was bringing, either one of the boys, I'm sitting there and that's what I'm looking at. is People or Entertainment Weekly. I like those. you like But...
00:41:25
Speaker
um Like I used to, whenever I was a teenager, i had a subscription to Seventeen magazine. oh very nice. Yes. And I was so excited whenever they started having those quizzes on Facebook because it took me back to, whenever I was a teenager, getting those and you'd take the quiz. And um Amanda and i my cousin, whenever we would go on road trips or anything, like we would read each other the articles and
00:41:55
Speaker
from those magazines, you know, like back before the days of phones and internet at our our fingertips and all of that. but And then it was so fun. Like if the other ones, like Tiger Beat and there was another one. I think it was just called Teens.
00:42:18
Speaker
But they would have like posters inside. And those were cool. Yeah. So it's been a long time. Yeah. Yeah, but we didn't see what Chandler was reading this time. We know he's read computer magazines and things in the past. But Rachel snatched it out of his hands. And, oh, again, how does he phrase it? He's like, just so many paper cuts, multiple so many paper cuts.
00:42:44
Speaker
Yeah. on his hand but they come to they kind of negotiate and Chandler's going to take her out for lunch because that's a limited short time and then goes on a rant that he never wants to be set up again and he goes um basically I'm talking nonsense and she knows yeah that's a lot of big talking she goes I know yeah okay but the the timing on all of that whenever she's like she's flipped out she's gone crazy call her call her and he's like oh that makes me want to call yes and then he's like and then he's like why would i call her be like well in case you didn't notice i didn't call you because i don't like you and um you know and then they're going back and forth you know and she's like yeah well if you're not gonna call her just take her out again
00:43:35
Speaker
It's so, it's Chandler's got himself in a pickle. Yeah. In a pickle, for sure. In a pickle. We go to the girls' apartment. very sad, a very sad scene because Ross enters. Monica's in the shower.
00:43:49
Speaker
And then Ross, I think, is getting something at the fridge and notices a ah funky smell smell. And Phoebe's house, it's on fire. There's smoke coming in and flames coming at the top of it.
00:44:01
Speaker
Ross tries to throw water on it from the sink, but there's just not enough water. So ends up bursting into the, into the, the bathroom. Monica's in the shower, shrieks as loudly as possibly she possibly can.
00:44:15
Speaker
And yeah, that's going to traumatize and scar both of them. I would imagine. Mm-hmm. Yes. Yes. Yes. yeah but The fire is out. The apartment didn't burn down. So this is good news. We go back to the theater. Kate is staying with Marshall. She kind of blows Joey off. Joey's all excited. And, you know, what about last night? Oh, yes.
00:44:42
Speaker
oh Now I want to ask you. Okay. Because right there at the very beginning, ah Kate and Joey are talking about, And he tells her, yeah I talked to Lauren and I told her about us.
00:44:57
Speaker
And then that's whenever we find his name because he goes, did you talk to Marshall? Ah, right. Was that in there for you? Yes. that but i don't I forgot that Joey said his name, but that those lines are in there. And then she's like, no, why would I? There's no reason and all of that. We don't need to make a big deal about this.
00:45:20
Speaker
And then, yeah, and she says, he's, you know, you can't tell it. Tell me it didn't mean anything. And she's like, I was just caught up in the moment. Haven't you ever slept with a woman that meant more to her than you? Right. And then in comes Lauren and he's, you know, she says hi to Kate and they say And then Joey says, oh, okay. Hi, Lauren. Hi, pig. Hi, pig.
00:45:48
Speaker
Oh, dang. Poor Lauren. Yeah. she's She's just had her little heart broken. I say little, that sounds condescending, but my head, she's about 19. Yeah. Yeah, she looks very young. And teeny tiny. She's just yeah yeah just little thing. a little thing.
00:46:06
Speaker
But yeah, Kate said, yeah as you said, caught up in the moment. And for the first time, and one of the few times in this whole series, we see Joey sort of gets heartbroken a bit. You know, we see his, you know, he doesn't really know what to do with these feelings, the the poor guy.
00:46:22
Speaker
um Phoebe is about to get the tour of the burned out dollhouse now back in the girl's apartment. I've i've got it my notes. The giraffe and the pirates are okay.
00:46:33
Speaker
But, um yeah, but the puppets that are underneath this sheet are not. And is it foster puppets? Is that what she says? That's what I thought she said. Yeah.
00:46:44
Speaker
Like I said, I can't get onto the script thing. So that was as best as I could tell. that's That's what I thought. And that's, while that seems odd, it seems perfect for something Phoebe would come up with. Foster Puppets. Give him a whole story.
00:47:01
Speaker
Absolutely. sorrying Why wouldn't you? um well Chandler is stuck by his word he's taking Joanna out for lunch comes back it hits that slight awkward pause and then Chandler goes okay but wait yeah did the did you hear about her mascara goop oh when he's walking in that's right he's like yeah's right there it's right there that's right I forgot that was in this scene i again i think i mean I guess if it really bugs him, that's one thing. But I i feel it's kind of bold for a a second date.
00:47:38
Speaker
To tell somebody that. yeah Yeah. Especially when you know you're going to break up with them. like just Just leave it alone. Because that's going embarrass her. And she doesn't deserve to be embarrassed. yeah I don't know that she really gets embarrassed. so Yeah, I think yeah you're right there. She's a pretty pretty strong...
00:47:57
Speaker
Yeah, I don't know. Yeah, not much, i think, phases her. I think you're right. ah But there's an awkward pause. Chandler can't cope with it. And then say, well, this is great. Let's do it again. I'll give you a call sometime. And yeah, tries to leave. Rachel is putting an end to this and putting an end to it now. Yeah, she is. Yeah. Thanks so much. she she She grabs him and makes him. I'm not going yeah never call you.
00:48:28
Speaker
then he dances in there to talk it to her. And that was so funny. It's so good. And he kind of says, it's me. I've got commitment issues. you know, it's not going to work out.
00:48:42
Speaker
And then once again, i believe, i think he says again, doesn't he, that he'll call her. Yeah, because then she's, you know, this isn't how I hope it would end. And then they stand there and she's like, I appreciate your honesty. And then there's like this...
00:48:58
Speaker
Big, long, awkward pause. And instead of just saying, okay, bye, and leaving, he says it. Well, this is great. I'll give you a call. We can do it again sometime. And it's like, oh, no. that's just his go-to when he's uncomfortable, his line. um Yeah, we've we finish here with the boys' apartment. We think with that the potential of Joey's, is that or isn't that Joey's bedroom? And I think now you're right the more I think about it I don't think it is. We go to the boys' apartment really for the first time of this episode. And Joey's going through his little black book, I imagine, calling his exes to apologize for his behavior, scoring names on the list. And in true Joey fashion, he calls to speak to a woman and ends up needing to speak to the mother as well. Which
00:49:50
Speaker
sums up Joey perfectly. Yeah, that's there's our there's our Joey that we know and love back. And yeah, this episode kind ends on that note.
00:50:01
Speaker
um Let's see. Your Gunther Central Park this week. Who are you going for? Chandler. Chandler. Because it's just so funny.
00:50:14
Speaker
So funny. And i he he carried this episode, I think. i thought I think so i i I was going really between... I liked Phoebe, but I like i thought Chandler and Joey, for me, had a lot more in it.
00:50:31
Speaker
I'm choosing Joey just really because it was kind of neck and neck, but the scene, the breakfast scene where he comes in and hugs them, and and he just... you know This is a family podcast, but when he describes what they did last night, and Monica goes, oh, my... Just all of that. I i just love his delivery. I like seeing this other side of Joey.
00:50:55
Speaker
um yeah So yeah, I'm going to go with him this week, I think. All right. Let's see. and so What are we rating it? This is a very good question. What did you suggest?
00:51:09
Speaker
Dolls? I think it should be. but Yeah, dolls. i think it's perfect. How many dolls this week from you? Seventh. seven and yeah i've also written down seven this is a good solid episode i think yeah but not i mean it's fine even though it does have one of the lines but that i think should also tell like that it shocked me that that line it's a little early to be drinking is that
00:51:40
Speaker
Like, there's no context to that, you know? Right. But it's just a hilarious line. And I think that's it, right? Like, don't know. Yeah, it's good, it's funny, but yeah, there's nothing groundbreaking for me in this one. Right.
00:51:58
Speaker
you know, and it's kind of, to me, it's kind of other than the Joyce storyline. i think this storyline with Joanna kind of, we see her again, but you know, that storyline is kind of done the dollhouse. I don't think do do we ever see the dollhouse again?
00:52:15
Speaker
think it just disappears. Like Monica doesn't keep it. um So it's kind of almost like a standalone. We do see Joanna again because we do see that's right.
00:52:27
Speaker
There's the part where Chandler ends in the rocket. That's right. That's right. It's not the end of the story. That's it's right. It's not. That's right.
00:52:39
Speaker
Well, let's see. Next week, I had to double and triple check the name of this one. The name of the next week's episode is the one with a chick and a duck.
00:52:51
Speaker
I thought it was the chick and the duck, but it's not. It's a chick and a duck because... Interesting. Yeah. Because in my head, it's always, you know, the chick, the duck, which they become the chick and the duck. That's what they're referred to. But at this point, it's just a chick and a duck because we're we're not invested in them yet, I guess. Not yet.
00:53:13
Speaker
Not yet, but we will be soon. All right. Any final thoughts on this week's episode? Yeah, it was fine. No, have no other things to say. Nothing else to say on this. nothing Yeah, me either. that Well, we will be back, like we said, next week with the one with a chick and a duck. But as always, everybody out there, thank you so much for listening to the Purple Door Podcast.
