Introduction and Personal Updates

00:00:04
Speaker
Well, hello and welcome to this week's episode of the Purple Door Podcast, a friend's rewatch pod. I'm one of your hosts, Alistair, alongside Deanne. Deanne, how are you this evening?
00:00:15
Speaker
I'm doing awesome, Al. Life is good. It's a busy little season we're in right now. We are. It's a very busy time of life for both of us, but we always make time to sit down and talk some friends. Absolutely. It's definitely a highlight of it life. Absolutely.

Deanne's Pig Spectro at the Farm Event

00:00:35
Speaker
I've got several things to ask you or we've got to announce on there. The first one is we did discuss briefly, I believe in the last episode, you were going to have a unique experience with some farm animals. i would love I deliberately didn't ask you before we recorded it and we haven't talked. How was it?
00:00:57
Speaker
How was it? i okay, so I looked the part 100%. You did look awfully fancy. I saw the picture on Facebook. I did. And the whole thing is that whenever you are showing your pig, you're supposed to look. make eye contact with the judge and you look real serious and mean and then you like do your pig and and like you do this and so like I had my hair up and a bun I didn't wear my glasses because I didn't want to be adjusting them I did not want you know I needed to be focused right this Serious business. Yeah. And so, man, I looked the part and I walked out there. My pig was so good.
00:01:43
Speaker
He was so good. spec Did he have a name? Spectro. Spectro. Wonderful. Wednesday was our last rehearsal. um And at that time, Spectro weighed in at 155 pounds. However, Saturday morning, do you know how much that pig weighed?
00:02:05
Speaker
Now, this could go either way. he but i'm goingnna go now We're going to go with the stereotypical way because he is a pig. We're getting ready for the big shows and all the things. So go ahead.
00:02:16
Speaker
Let's go crazy 161. How about 175? That's insane. gained 20 pounds in three days. What were you feeding the pig?
00:02:29
Speaker
said, oats. oh Oats. Oats. So many oats, I guess. i was like, oh my God. um Yeah. So anyway, i was robbed.
00:02:42
Speaker
Robbed. Now I did go ahead and and try to... You know, with my little whip, I had my whip and my brush. I got out there. i was nervous. i started sweating profusely straight from my armpits. I was like, oh, my God, I can't believe I'm really for real life doing this.
00:03:02
Speaker
And ah what am And I forgot. i forgot everything. It was like stage fright. I was like, I'm, I knew I was supposed to be looking serious, but I was forgetting to keep eye contact with the judge the whole time. The judge came up to me and asked me what, what I did.
00:03:22
Speaker
he in ah my response was, this is Spectro. He weighs 175 pounds and he was born in August. And he started laughing. And he said, no, I mean you for the job. What do you do? Oh, right. And I was like, oh, oh, yeah. You want to, I, nah.
00:03:44
Speaker
So then I was like, well, I look really very serious right now. I said, I'm an elementary school assistant principal. And he goes, oh, okay, okay. Well, you're doing great. Keep it up. And I'm like, you're lying. You're trying to make me feel better. Right. Yes. Don't try to make me feel better. So I cut off. you know We knew the the principal at the high school, she came in She was like ready. And she had the FFA kids were like,
00:04:15
Speaker
pumping her up to the judge so i feel like it was not an unbiased situation understood understood but i mean it gave me a whole new perspective respect and um not even an understanding because i could never but of ffa kids and how hard they work and the crazy amount of time and energy and effort Like, we didn't have that at my high school whenever I was growing up. And then, you know, and I don't know if they had it at the, you know, at the a district that i taught at previously. um So this was my first experience.
00:05:03
Speaker
at all, and I had never even been to a show like that. And I was like, wow, this is so very Texas of me. It is. It is. I mean, you you you were born here, right? I know you were here.
00:05:15
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, not 20 minutes, 25 minutes from where we are now And ah yeah, like this was not a thing, but um it was awesome. It's so fun. and I love it. Well, next door, maybe the Purple Door podcast can sponsor a Purple Door pig or something.
00:05:36
Speaker
Yeah. At the next event. Well, not an hour after I was done, my cousin's goat had babies, had two babies, had little twin baby goats. Yeah. on valentine's day yes isn't that crazy love it you are yeah right there in with all the farm animals you know what's going on i am i am so texas you are you need that on the t-shirt yeah i'm wearing my my the colony a texas city not a cult that's where i grew up where we were just busy telling everybody we weren't a cult that's fantastic but now it's big and fancy and still doesn't have farm animals no farm animals to be found well let's say i'm going through my little list of things because we haven't talked in a little bit so let's i know you went on an amazing adventure I did. I was in Washington, D.C. for work, but then went up a day early to have some fun, and it was fantastic.
00:06:41
Speaker
um Got with a few Smithsonian's and a few other bits and pieces. Had a great time at the conference. So a very successful, albeit very cold, trip.
00:06:54
Speaker
If you haven't been to DC, I've been to DC a couple of times, but more passing through quickly, so we stopped off. This was a real chance to spend some time there, so had a

Shoutout to Laura and Connections

00:07:05
Speaker
great time. I do want, before we get any farther, because I will forget, I want to shout out to our mutual friend, Laura.
00:07:12
Speaker
I think she, we were talking about her off the air. She listens every week. Stop, does she really episode every week.
00:07:22
Speaker
So we've known a lady called Laura for a long time and I haven't seen her in many years. i was her fourth grade teacher. I know. yet You knew her first. I did. I did. And I was her neighbor.
00:07:35
Speaker
Indeed. Yeah. Oh, sweet. She listens to every episode. freaking proud of her. She's just amazing. And I yeah had the opportunity to sit down with her for about an hour, work-related this week. And we did venture into talking about...
00:07:51
Speaker
friends and the podcast and she just loves it and she listens to the episode and then we'll sometimes go back and watch the episode we've talked about so she can look for the thing so a shout out to laura the lovely laura i think that is needed and she's just the best we'll have to we have her oh my god that would can you imagine yeah that would be fun I'm so jealous right now that you got to talk to her for an hour. was. It was so cool. sick and proud of her. And we have one other, i think just one more big announcement. So let's see if I can do this.

Friends Trivia Night Announcement

00:08:31
Speaker
I don't know if that drum roll came through on the actual recording. I could hear and you could hear it. could hear it. So hopefully it did. Sometimes these things do and don't on the recording. This episode will come out. We're recording a little early on February 26th.
00:08:48
Speaker
On March 1st, the following Monday, we are hosting Trivia Night again at Miss Angeline's right here in Denton. oh Have I got the date wrong? Monday.
00:08:59
Speaker
Monday? i mean, Sunday. Sunday. Sorry, Sunday. I think as I said the first, which is Sunday, but I said another day. Yeah, the first Sunday. March 1st, which is a Sunday at 5pm. We did it before. we had a fantastic time. We had a lot more people show up than we thought. Who knows what will happen this time? It's another time that I was very, very sweaty.
00:09:22
Speaker
It was hot. I think we'll be good this time. I'm excited. it's going to great time. If you are local, if you are listening before Sunday, head out to Miss Angeline's 5 o'clock. We're having the Purple Door Podcast. Just do it. Friends Trivia. We're going to have a great time. They've invited us back because it went so well last time.
00:09:42
Speaker
That's so nice. That's super awesome. oh I've got some little trinkets and gifty kinds of things. That we can put with prizes. It'll be so great. Awesome. We'll talk more. Okay.
00:09:57
Speaker
Yeah. We'll get that figured out. Oh, do you know, we both have a gift for each other. from like i have multiple gifts. And I have a gift for um sweet little Lenny.
00:10:08
Speaker
Awesome. She may make an appearance. She may make an appearance. Oh, my God. I hope so. I hope so too. going to keep our fingers crossed, little Lenny. So, yes, be there Sunday, 5 o'clock. Miss Angeline's right here in Denton. But before that, we have an episode to talk about. We have the one with all the jealousy.
00:10:32
Speaker
I'm just going to say bleh. yeah When I saw this was coming up, I thought this Wilson's going to have some feelings. She's going to have some thoughts. Oh, no. Before we get into it, of course.

Friendly Friends Trivia Game

00:10:44
Speaker
Well, we do we have we need to trivia. Trivia, trivia. We're off our game a little bit. i'm A little bit. Okay. Yes. But our questions have been vetted and given the stamp of approval. I'm sorry. I got a text from Kate a second to ago. The dog is barking and is inside. There's a possum on the fence.
00:11:02
Speaker
And one of the dogs goes nuts. They're out there all the time. But the dog has to stay in It's a thing. Yeah, you don't want an eaten possum. Not really. disgusting And the possum, they've never fallen off the fence, but they've've they've wobbled a couple of times. So I don't like the dogs to be out there hitting the fence because they know what they're doing.
00:11:24
Speaker
Anyway, I digress. That's just if you can hear the dog in the background. But Kate has vetted the questions. You, after four games, we started off with two ties and then you are two for two since then.
00:11:36
Speaker
Okay. I have some work to do. You started, I started, you started, I started. So you read the question first. I believe. Yep.
00:11:46
Speaker
Sounds good. All right. All right. All right, Al. I'm ready. Whenever Rachel and Ross are in the coffee shop talking yeah about Mark and everything else.
00:12:04
Speaker
And Gunther's standing in the background at the bar. Yes. Please let it be me. Please let it be me. Please let it be me. What color is this shirt? I know it. I'm off to a start because it is the most fluorescent lime green think I've ever seen. It is an unnatural color.
00:12:24
Speaker
Yeah, it is And it looks great with his hair. I mean, that he is he is not shying away from anything. Nice. That stood out to me. was It was just how green it was. Yes, it was. Fantastic. Yeah, it was. All right. Let's see. I've got a question for you and I'll need, I'm going to say we're going need both parts of this, but I'll probably waver on that.
00:12:48
Speaker
Let's see. Chandler asks Ross to go to a bachelor party. Who is it for? And what is that person's profession? Okay. He's a botanist and they're such geeks.
00:12:59
Speaker
They are such geeks. Oh God. Now there's two parts to who it is. I think if you get one of them, that's enough for the point. Okay.
00:13:15
Speaker
Is it somebody's brother-in-law? No, but your day you're... Dang. You know, you're... It's it's a relative. He's got no friends. He's got no friends. And he's only getting married so he can see a stripper.
00:13:29
Speaker
That's right. Dang it.
00:13:34
Speaker
I say you've at least got half a point. Okay. um Man. Okay, is it...
00:13:44
Speaker
Is it his weird cousin? It is his weird cousins. You get the full point. Do you have it? Take a guess at his name. And I'll tell you this. It's his cousin, weird something.
00:13:58
Speaker
Just in case that triggers a- Is it Martin or Morris or- Does it start with an M? It does not. Uh-oh. I don't know. It is Chandler's cousin, Weird Albert.
00:14:10
Speaker
Weird Albert. Weird Albert. Like Weird Al. Exactly. I should have made that connection. Dang. Oh, Al, I'm okay if you only give me, like, and if you don't even give me any points. you got Bottas and Weird and Cousin.
00:14:29
Speaker
you you You get the point. But it's now your question for me. All right. What's Mark's job at Bloomingdale's?
00:14:41
Speaker
I have no idea. So I'm going to have to... Because I don't really know what it is, and Rachel, I think, ends up getting... Oh, I do know. Hold on. He is Joanne's assistant.
00:14:53
Speaker
Yes. That's right. Because she has two assistants. Yes. An assistant buyer is what they are. Okay. I was going to say buyer, because I don't i assume that you're buying stuff from the supplier to sell the store.
00:15:07
Speaker
Right. um Because Rachel, I think, becomes... Another kind of buyer or something later on. Something. Yeah. That's right. All right. We're both, we are a hundred percent so far. hey I don't know that I feel super confident, but anyway, that I am really two for two, but I think it's coming. think it's coming, but this is another two parter.
00:15:30
Speaker
Joey has selected two songs for his audition in the musical. What are the two songs? New York, New York, and, oh, the other one, San Francisco.
00:15:42
Speaker
That, again, that's going to be enough. but it it i love Is it I left my heart in San Francisco? You got it word for word. left my heart in San Francisco. ah Look at you go. ah All right. We're on our game today. What have you got for me next? right.
00:16:01
Speaker
How much is the discount that Bloomingdale's employees get? That is 20%. Nice. Because I remember thinking that seems fair, but I was wondering if that was not or if it is good. You know, if you work retail, what do you usually get?
00:16:17
Speaker
Whenever I worked at Foley's, I got 25. Okay. It seemed in the in the in the right kind of range for a retail discount. All right. I'm going to be honest. I feel this one but is is tricky.
00:16:29
Speaker
So ah I don't know. We'll see. Okay. What's the name of the book that Julio is reading? Oh, man, it's by Moliere. oh Wow, it is, yeah.
00:16:44
Speaker
Dang it. And it's it's it's French, isn't it? and Because it's... um It's in English, the title. Is it? The way he says it is weird, though. Yeah.
00:16:58
Speaker
Oh, God, Al, I don't know. i don't know. This book is called Flowers of Evil. ah ah Okay, whatever.
00:17:10
Speaker
famo Yeah. That's right. All right. It's okay. it is it Is it? I don't know. We've had three questions each. I'm up three too, but we'll see what happens here. All right. Name at least four things that Ross gets for Rachel for her first week at work.
00:17:27
Speaker
This is a good one because I can think of three. The love bug. Okay, and I have five. Okay, so the love bug. No, I have six. Six? Yeah.
00:17:40
Speaker
All right, one of them has to be the love bug. Of course, yes. Flowers. Okay. Okay. The barbershop quartet. Yeah. And this is where I'm going to get stuck. Let's think what else was possibly on the table. Because, of course, she just she had a mountain of flowers and things around. her Yeah.
00:18:02
Speaker
Is I don't think this counts. Is it is a card? That's not really a gift. So that doesn't really count. All right. I'm just talking. I didn't put that on my list. Yeah, but that's that's kind of it. Now, could you be a little more specific about your card?
00:18:18
Speaker
Oh, a first day at work card? Is there such a thing? Oh, interesting. No. No. no and it's No. The card, i forgot about that. there's It's pretty specific. All right. Well, to have just take a random guess.
00:18:37
Speaker
Um...
00:18:41
Speaker
What else could you have got? I keep thinking something. A teddy bear. Yeah. just again Yeah. It's a giant bear that's sitting in the chair. ah you know the card is giant and it's got a picture of Ross and it says, I love you this much. And it's got hands.
00:19:01
Speaker
and But it's huge. all right miss setting up And then there's, and I, like I said, that wasn't on my list. um And then I said roses because there's a dozen roses and then there's a bouquet that has lilies in it.
00:19:16
Speaker
The balloons, the the love bug, the bear, and the barbershop quartet. All right. And there was the card. and Yeah. But again, he's psychotic. He's just a touch. We'll get boogered. I've got various layers to his psychosis, I think. Just nuts. But I'm going ask you a question now.
00:19:41
Speaker
When Joey sings, you got to pick a pocket or two. What color handkerchief does he pull out of the pianist's teeth? White. It is bright white. Well done. Yes. All right. We've had four questions each.
00:19:56
Speaker
I'm up for three. All right. So let's see what happens with this one. All right. What three things did Joey lie about on his resume?
00:20:06
Speaker
All right.
00:20:09
Speaker
I'm going to get really close with this, but I don't think I'll get it I think I may have a written down, I'm not looking my notes. Being a Zoom kid... Yes. Because I don't know what that is, but it sounds funny. Oh, I can tell you because that's that's yeah the thing I got all curious about was all these different things that he lied about. being a Zoom kid, he danced with Twyla Tharp.
00:20:33
Speaker
Is that a name? Her dance company, Twyla Tharp. Dance company. And this is the one that's going to trip me up because it's something like the New York Ballet.
00:20:46
Speaker
So very close. The New York City Ballet. The New York. No. No. i don't have it. I don't have it. and Do you remember? That's funny that you say that because in one of the other episodes, it's a donation has been made in your name to the New York City Ballet.
00:21:05
Speaker
But it' it's not that it. But it's the American Ballet Theater. Oh, that's right. Yes. That's right. But that's okay. I i feel like I'm going give that to you because you gave that other one to me. So you're like, I feel like good.
00:21:22
Speaker
if It feels a touch tainted. Let's just see how this plays out. Okay. Because I was close. All right. My last one for you is where is the dance captain stuck that results in Joey having to take to audition? With his relationship drama in Long Island. In Long Island. There we go. Yeah.
00:21:46
Speaker
All right. so you You won that one now. All right. I'll take it. feels a little, little, off but I'll take it. Yeah, no, you need to take it it. That was good. That was very, very good. Quick fire. I've got two last questions. Oh, I have one.
00:22:05
Speaker
All right. so But these don't count. They don't count. I'll go first because then you'll go and then I'll go again. So what do we find that Rachel is scared of? Um...
00:22:17
Speaker
What do we find out Rachel is scared? Oh, turtles! Turtles indeed. Turtles indeed. Yeah, because of the purses. Yeah. Okay, mine was, what's on Ross's tie? And be as specific as possible. Dinosaurs is not the answer.
00:22:33
Speaker
I believe it's a T-Rex. And I think it's blue. Uh-huh. And then there are also three little volcanoes on there. And then underneath there's a green dinosaur. I got consumed with the fact that it was blue. And why was it blue?
00:22:50
Speaker
I think I'm right in saying, and I could be making this up, that there's there's no definitive answer to what colors dinosaurs were. They can make lots of inferences, you know, if they're hiding in the leaves, you know, they're probably green and brown and things. But like the, I don't know, the chlorophyll, the chloro-whatever, that you we could see what color has long since gone.
00:23:13
Speaker
Yeah. so it's all just assumptions. So they could have been blue, very unlikely, but they could have been, and I don't think we we will ever actually know. And I could be making that up, but think that's...
00:23:24
Speaker
Interesting. Somewhat based in science, I think. Maybe not. Maybe I'm just making things up. Oh, and my last one for you. How long have Ross and Rachel been together?
00:23:38
Speaker
Six months. Not quite. It is almost a year. she They're sitting on the couch ah reconciling and she says, we've been together almost a year now.
00:23:49
Speaker
Yeah. And that's that. Wow. Crazy. All right. Good good trivia. Good bamboozle this week. enjoyed that. it was. Yeah, it was. right. Well, let's get stuck in. We're going to start in the girl's apartment. Rachel's getting ready for her first day on a new job.
00:24:05
Speaker
um Chandler tries to tease her, but Ross says, don't start with her. She's she yeah he letting let letting everyone know, don't mess with Rachel.
00:24:16
Speaker
um No, this is you can't start with her. That's right. I do quite like the way Ross delivers that line. Like, don't start with her. It's quite well done. Chandler is going to invite Ross to his cousin's bachelor party um because he's got no friends, as you said, and he wants to see a stripper. Might as well get married. Seems like a successful life choice. um But botanists are such geeks. Such geeks. Such geeks. Now, I was convinced, and so was Kate, when we watched this earlier today, that you were going to ask a question about Phoebe bringing in the purses.
00:24:55
Speaker
Do you know I was trying to count the purses? And I was going to ask that, but I could not. I did know that because I tried to count them too, and I knew you would. And I thought it was eight, but couldn't really figure out. Yeah, I did not feel confident in my answer. And so I was like, I'm going to let it go. Because it's funny, it's funny now that we know we're just asking five.
00:25:24
Speaker
You know, and it's five. Better make them good, but not crazy. Right. But as it's funny. I like that we have these, like, parameters, right? I think it's it works out well for Bamboozle. Because, yeah, I was looking at those parsers thinking there's going to be some questions here. But it was. It was difficult to see. But how many parsers do you own, do you think? Yeah.
00:25:50
Speaker
Are you somebody with one for different outfits kind of thing? Al, if I can get away with not having to carry one around, that makes my life so happy. um I probably have oh, gosh, maybe three, four. Right. Yeah. Well, okay, hang on.
00:26:13
Speaker
Yeah, not many. Four, and then I have a fancy one. But like, yeah. Yeah. it's yeah I mean, I think Kate probably has a couple, but ah she has one as far as I'm concerned, because she has one that she's very meticulous. She'll research It's got the right amount of pockets, right amount of this. It holds everything she needs perfectly. Not too much space, not too little.
00:26:37
Speaker
Yes. And that's what's used every day. Why why change it up? Right. Yeah. Well, I was noticing, it's funny you bring that up because I was noticing whenever our we were out today, that like the bottoms is starting to like get all, and not the bottom, but like the corners are starting to like rub off. And I'm like, oh man, I'm going to have Might be time. Might be time. Yeah, that's terrible. That's no fun. Phoebe suggested instead of a stripper, let's get a magician.
00:27:09
Speaker
Yeah! Yeah, which I'm 100% on board with this idea. I just like that from Phoebe. Yes. You know, just changing things up. um We go across the hall to the boys' apartment and this is where the episode starts to get its title because Ross is already jealous of Mark.

Ross's Jealousy and Over-the-Top Gestures

00:27:26
Speaker
Yeah. Doesn't know what to do about this. But Joey's excited. he's got He's got some good news. He has a Broadway musical audition at Tale of Two Cities. Yeah.
00:27:38
Speaker
ah Guess what? Oh, no, go ahead. Go ahead. Oh, no, I was going to tell you, you know, my, my little um side ah job, whatever, we had auditions because I decided that I just like to work way too much.
00:27:57
Speaker
Yeah. So I did hear about this, but I know that sometimes. Oh yeah. Because I messaged Kate. You did indeed. You did. Yeah. Because we had the auditions. And so I got cast again and I'm so excited. Very exciting.
00:28:14
Speaker
It's good. that you You love it so much. I just think that's. sad I think so too. I. am Yeah. Because otherwise what in the world am I doing? Indeed. We got to have some fun. We see Rachel's office. I think this is the first time we see inside. i mean, it would make sense. Mark is helping her at her desk, showing her how to do whatever it is. Wait, wait, let's go back. Did you ever read or see Tale of Two Cities?
00:28:43
Speaker
Never. I mean I know it's like a play in a book. Like a saying. Yeah, but... Okay. How about you? With Charles Dickens. I know that I read it whenever I was in high school. And I say that. I know that we had...
00:28:59
Speaker
I don't know. well like We read it in class. big Right. And I know that it I liked it, but I don't really remember what it was about or anything. Yeah, i i don't I just have heard the title, I think. Yeah. But it cracked me up whenever they were talking about the Cliff Notes because he's like, I think it's Mr. Dickens. And Joey's like, what?
00:29:21
Speaker
And what? Right. Then he's like, I'll get you the Cliff Notes. What? The abridgment. Okay, all right. Like that would have been... Like abridgment helps. Yes. But then later, whenever they're reading the poem, he's like, you're so confusing for whatever he says.
00:29:39
Speaker
And that was fun. Yeah, the poem's like a great part of this. I'm looking forward to that. Yes. No, but Mark is just helping answer, or he's helping Rachel show how to do things on the computer, and then he answers the phone call that is from Ross. And I do think this might be the only time we see Ross's office as well.
00:30:01
Speaker
You know, he's got this massive desk with just naturally dinosaur toys and things everywhere. Yeah, well, there ah that it was so weird. i almost asked you about what all was in his office. Right. Right.
00:30:14
Speaker
Because there was the weird head. yeah it's weird There was like the primate thing here and then the dinosaur. And then there was a little guy.
00:30:26
Speaker
Yeah, there's all kinds of peculiar things. Yeah, which I guess line directly up with him. So, you know, whatever. right He's still a big old jerk, baby.
00:30:37
Speaker
yes ross is just doing ross things and it's it's a weird weird office rachel has ah a panic though you know she's gonna ship 3 000 bras to personnel mark come help me and this is the first sign of but it wasn't mark come help me save me wasn't it no save it no what was it i need you oh Oh, that's, that's Ross. ro ah Ross is not going to take that well. And he crashes out by smashing the phone numerous times.
00:31:10
Speaker
It's terrible behavior, terrible behavior, Ross, but it's, a it' it's just a sign of things to come. um i did forget the b plot or c plot whatever this one is about um julio and i was very excited for you to get back into the moonlight diner where i know you enjoy oh so very much this is just right up your alley yes monica and julio start talking and about the book he's reading and how do you feel about poetry
00:31:43
Speaker
I hate it. You hate it. I i have strong i have yeah strong emotions about poetry and how much I hate it. Um...
00:31:54
Speaker
And I'll tell you, it's 100% whenever Monica talks later about, you know, you write tricky poetry that seems to be about one thing, but it's really about something else.
00:32:07
Speaker
That's why I can't stand it. It doesn't make sense. And I don't like it. And it's boring. And I hated teaching it. that I could handle ah whenever i could turn it do nursery rhymes.
00:32:20
Speaker
Right. Like then I was okay. It's different. It's little different. But like, no, anything else is just sucks and it's terrible. But I'm sorry. I mean, Al, how do you feel about poetry?
00:32:33
Speaker
i would say, I just. That's what I meant. That's what you meant to say. I just, I don't have anything against it, but I'm just not wired to be like immersed into it.
00:32:45
Speaker
Like if there was a poetry reading, i would listen, I would be respectful, I would try. And it's no fault of the the orator up there saying it's it's me, the listener.
00:32:57
Speaker
It goes in and it kind of rattles around and it just doesn't land anywhere and falls out my other ear. It's just not, it's just not for me. Just not for me. But that's, you hey, to each but to each their own. But, hey, if you like poetry, good for you. Exactly. It's it's on me. I don't fully understand. So that's it's nothing wrong with the poetry itself. But ah man, I feel he was a little sleazy with this so I could write ah was an epic poem about this lip and all this kind of stuff. He's such a tool. Yeah, he's he kind of is. but But he and Monica kiss and she's kind of goofy and he's kind of sleazy. And that it just is what it is um with the two of them.
00:33:47
Speaker
I do love this storyline. I'm not quite sure why Joey's audition. Yes. I just, I like the guy. I like all of it. I thought for sure you were going to ask me the name of the theater.
00:34:01
Speaker
Because it shows the sign right on the floor. And I was like, oh, I better go back and look at that because Al's going to ask me. That's my kind And I'm so glad you didn't because I forgot until we got to this point in my notes.
00:34:17
Speaker
Yep, I did not. I think I just like that. I don't what his... He's not the director. I don't think maybe he is. The guy who ends up having to leave. I just like his character. I like the way Joey acts in this scene.
00:34:30
Speaker
um he sings. He's got to pick a pocket or two. Not a bad singing voice. I think we don't really see Joey ever singing, but I think not, not bad at all.
00:34:41
Speaker
um And the casting director just loves him. He thinks Joey is the man for this role. Yes. He is all about and he gets a callback, but he's got to bring his jazz shoes.
00:34:53
Speaker
but All the parts. All the parts. He got to dance a little. ah Yes. Yes. This is where we find out that Joey Tribbiani, liar, liar, pants on fire. Yeah, he does. she Yeah, he does. The back of his head shot. And this was it. Yeah, the Twyla Tharp. Yeah, just scribbled down Twyla Tharp ballet. It wasn't a Zoom kid.
00:35:16
Speaker
I believe you can tell me a little bit. Let me tell you a little bit about all of three of these things. So Twyla Tharp, I was like, what what is Twyla Tharp? Is that a school? Is that a fancy school? What is it? No, Twyla Tharp is actually a very famous like American dancer and choreographer. And instead of having like a traditional school,
00:35:44
Speaker
She has a dance troupe. And so that's why it's like three years of modern dance with Twyla Tharp. Like I heard that and I was thinking like modern dance classes.
00:35:58
Speaker
No, it's a dance troupe that goes around dancing. And so there you go. And then the American Ballet Theater is one of the greatest dance companies in the entire world.
00:36:12
Speaker
Right. Yes. And so they are, he's supposed to be like a national treasure and it's like this huge big deal. And, you know, he was just there for five years. And then he says, and well, I wasn't a Zoom kid either. Now here's what's interesting about the Zoom kids. So it was a TV show, like kids incorporated. Ooh, Al, do you know any of these like kids incorporated or any of that? Okay. no Okay. I do not. Whenever I was a kid on TV, well, and it wasn't really, but like a kid, like an older, not little, but yeah anyway, they like, it's like a variety show for kids.
00:36:58
Speaker
And so Zoom Kids, that was in the 70s. And it was like a kid's variety show kids. kind of thing. Right. Okay. So in the 70s, that would have, you know, that would make sense. That would line up if he was a Zoom kid, because like, I think it was Jennifer ah ah Love Hewlett, that girl, she was a kids incorporated kid. Okay. So, ah you know, um but Mickey Mouse Club.
00:37:30
Speaker
Okay. So I know that stuff was really was it okay Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake and all but yeah through that. And then whenever it was on in the 50s, it was like Annette Funicello and ah Ricky, whatever his name was. Oh, gosh, I feel bad. He was on the Sonic commercials. um and Never mind. Anyway, so Zoom Kids were like that as well.
00:37:58
Speaker
And here's what's interesting is this episode came out in 1997. Well, Zoom Kids was revitalized in 1999. Oh, that's fun. But it was not long not long lived. But I just thought that was kind of cool.
00:38:16
Speaker
Yeah, I'm glad because I didn't know if that was just something made up or if it was yeah and it was ah it was a thing. Yeah, no it so it was ah um in the 70s. It was a thing. It was like on PBS.
00:38:30
Speaker
Channel 13. Good for PBS. I like it. yeah um I think, do we then go straight back to Joey being, oh no, he dances in the living room, doesn't he? And they're like, no. The the famous kind of or infamous Joey dance that he does. Yes. well Which is really a Chandler-esque kind of dance. Yes.
00:38:53
Speaker
Yes. I just love that Joey has that dance and that is... Have we already seen it? I just remember the scene where Chandler's like, weddings are a great place to meet women, so I don't dance because when I dance I look like this. And he ends up dancing and somebody opens the door and he kind of just semi-dances out the door. i forget the episode. But I love that they're both kind of awful dancers. There's something really funny about that.
00:39:19
Speaker
Yes. yes chandler ends up getting a call from a miss crystal chandelier which that joey's next line you expect whenever you name your kid that It's one of my favorite lines of the episode is that one.
00:39:36
Speaker
Yes. just Just brilliantly said. um Monica comes in. had a great date with Julio. He even left a poem. And this is where I'll probably

Monica and Julio's Misinterpreted Poem

00:39:50
Speaker
interchange you. Well, actually, he stopped kissing her too wide at that point. That's right.
00:39:56
Speaker
And then he let her read it. And it's just so... up ah Anyway. The guys in this episode are not doing themselves a whole bunch of favors, I think. With exception Chandler, I think, across the board. It's not not a good guy episode, this That's true.
00:40:13
Speaker
That's Yeah. Yeah. um But yeah, he's written he's written this this poem. um i would say The Empty Vase, you would say The Empty Vase, and we'll probably go back and forth on that. um But Monica doesn't get it. She thinks it's a ah love poem or something that everyone else kind realizes this is not compliment. Well, she thinks it's just about Yeah.
00:40:39
Speaker
Yeah. Like a pretty face. Symbolism. Yeah. Right. Because symbolism sucks. Right. Just say what you have to say. Right. No time for a... Kate feels that way about dance.
00:40:55
Speaker
Oh, really? ma Macy used to do lots of different dances. And we're all over it, all about it interpretive dance is one of her lifelong struggles because it's like what does it mean because it's all meant to mean something right instead of just being that's beautiful dancing and that's very impressive and good for you it's all the symbolism and meaning and she's like no no just Just stay dance. Just dance. And be amazing.
00:41:24
Speaker
Hip-a-gritty. That's right. All the way across the stage. Done. And she really tried. She meant she tried. She tried. just don't get it. Oh, man.
00:41:35
Speaker
Okay. of the funniest lines in this episode you didn't get. tell me. Earlier, whenever I said, and Chandler says, you're such a mystery or you're so confusing to me.
00:41:49
Speaker
Right? Right. You didn't know what I was talking about. I didn't. I was hoping it would jog my memory when we got. Yeah. No, because it's blue in in the script. You didn't get it. Okay. So, um you know how Joey's like reading it forever and ever and ever?
00:42:08
Speaker
Yes. And then, okay. And then Monica leaves and then Phoebe's, you know, telling him and they're talking about that. And then Joey finishes the poem.
00:42:19
Speaker
And then he looks around and like Phoebe and Chandler are both looking at him and he's like, what, what happened? And Chandler goes, yeah Joey, what do you think this poem means?
00:42:31
Speaker
Because he wasn't listening to them arguing back and forth. And right so Joey goes, well, Monica's the vase, right? And Chandler just looks at him like all shocked. And he goes, you're such a mystery to me.
00:42:47
Speaker
That's kind of fantastic. funny and It's And it goes back, you know, because at the very beginning, whenever he was kind of treating them like he was dumb, you know, with the, the you know, I'll get you the notes and all of that.
00:43:02
Speaker
The yin and the yang that is Joey Tribbiani. I just love it. I just love That's awesome. Yes. Yeah, we we head back to Rachel's office now. her Her desk, everything around her desk is flooded with gifts from Ross. And then the barbershop quartet comes in.
00:43:22
Speaker
Okay. Yeah. Hold on. Hold Talk to me. Talk to me about this. Gross, gross, gross. I was also sitting there just trying to get ballpark estimate of how much money is sitting around her.
00:43:41
Speaker
But, I mean, who would who would know in the 90s? I mean, I'm sure the Google knows. But there's a dozen long-stemmed red roses. There's the bouquet of flowers. There's the... the ah The balloons. There's this giant card that has the picture of Ross on it with the arms. I love you this much. That he probably got made at Kinko's with the Kinko's lady. But anyway. Oh, that's right. um And then this giant bear, which those things are not cheap. No. I mean, at the very least, cheapest, that would be $25. Yeah. you know But then the flowers and having them delivered. Yeah. You're talking many, many hundreds of dollars. So then I was like, how much does a barbershop quartet cost? And do they still do singing telegrams? And I knew that probably 20 years ago, yes, that that was still a thing because my aunt got one for her birthday, but they live in Tennessee. So then i was like, how much would one cost? And could I get one if I wanted to get one like right now? right And the answer, Al, is yes.
00:45:00
Speaker
I am so glad. I had no idea. I know. So there are three places here in the DFW area that do singing telegrams. Okay.
00:45:11
Speaker
Do you know how much it costs? Just take a guess.
00:45:18
Speaker
I'm going to go. If I was going to order four people come the island, that's it.
00:45:25
Speaker
I could be way off here, but I'm thinking $600. Okay. So depending on if, you know, if it if they charge you per person, you're not you're not far off at all. But in in order to get a singing telegram, it costs about 200
00:45:50
Speaker
All right. 200 bucks. And they will go to your little work and be in an outfit and sing a song and you can choose from different songs and stuff like that. That's, you know, i was thinking four people. So not too far. It brings me a little joy that that still exists in the world. It brings me actually a yeah lot of joy. And I wish that I would think of this more often.
00:46:16
Speaker
Because what a fun thing to... To save up and and get for somebody. i did have the FC Dallas mascot once deliver flowers to Kate.
00:46:31
Speaker
At Providence Elementary, Hooper, it they they were doing a thing one Valentine's Day where it was all the money went to charity, but you know there was ah you had to donate X amount and they would show up with flowers for your loved one. So that's the closest I've got to i think that is pretty excellent pretty excellent barbershop quartet's kind of fantastic although i don't now i'm thinking about it it would feel a little awkward just if you're sitting there by yourself in your office and they're just singing to you where do you look and like yeah where do you look it feel a bit awkward
00:47:12
Speaker
And then do you clap at the end? do you you know what I don't know. I don't know what you Yeah, you Whatever I clap for people that have done, much less. This is true. This is true. and Kids walk down the hallway correctly, they're getting a round of applause. Heck yeah, they are. Yeah, they are. Love it.

Rachel Confronts Ross

00:47:32
Speaker
Yeah, I'm glad that still exists and you looked that up. That is bright in my evening. There are three places in the DFW area. I did think they were pretty good. Like, I like them. I like these guys. Yes. Did a good job. um But it's all about come crashing down. We're back in the girls' apartment and Rachel is giving Ross what for.
00:47:53
Speaker
I think she says you might as well have come and just peed around my desk, which is completely accurate. Yeah. Like he might as well. It would have been a lot cheaper, but he might as well. It would have been a lot cheaper. Well, depending if somebody wanted to arrest him.
00:48:10
Speaker
I mean, I don't know. don't know. don't know for fact, but I do think it's probably pretty expensive if you get arrested for your name. And then the damages. Yeah, wouldn't be good. Yeah. But he's trying to justify it and kind of, you know.
00:48:30
Speaker
War is me. Ross, you've gone too far. You've gone too far. The fact that it's fueled by jealousy and not really his love for Rachel is the thing. That's it.
00:48:43
Speaker
Yeah. That's Well, and it the transition... makes me laugh or made me laugh out loud. The transition whenever he's like, well, if Mark thinks that, he's an idiot.
00:48:56
Speaker
And then the next scene is whenever Joey's like, he's a, Mark is Yes. I do love Joey's, his monologue in this scene where, you know, he's talking through what's going to happen to Ross. Yes. And Mark's going to be like, yes. It's so well done. Yes.
00:49:21
Speaker
I'm trying to remember what Chandler says when Joey finishes his little monologue. He paints quite a picture, doesn't That's it. I knew it was a good line. That was it. um Well, he's he's, it's, yeah. And then whenever Chandler's like, well, I know. You could send her a musical bug. Oh, wait, you've done that. You did that. Oh! Calling him out for his crazy. Yes. It's so good. Without a doubt. Yes.
00:49:49
Speaker
But this is where Ross, he hits a low point for me in this next scene because Mark is flirting with, i don't know if we ever catch her name, but this other co-worker. Yeah. And Ross is kind of hiding. I don't know if he was really hiding, but kind of. He's just around the corner. He's just, yeah, around that corner. And then he thinks it's Rachel because Rachel says something.
00:50:12
Speaker
And he bursts around and makes absolutely cool. Well, and you see her leave in the background. You see, he's standing there looking like the wall's here, right? The wall, well, whatever. The wall's here. He comes walking up and then he's eavesdropping, like right on the other side. And so she says that, but then she gets up and she leaves and you see in the background her walk by.
00:50:41
Speaker
Interesting. I didn't catch that. Yeah. So like she had, and I'm like, that's an interesting, like, what's the purpose of that wall there? I don't understand the layout of that room, but yeah, she walks by in and the background and then she comes back. So like she got up and she left them alone and went to go get something. And then she comes back.
00:51:05
Speaker
That's right. It's a funny setup. We see it later on when Chandler and Rachel are in there in a future episode. Kind of behind this funny wall thing write. Random wall. Yeah.
00:51:17
Speaker
I don't know. It's an interesting thing, but Ross comes in, guns a-blazing, and realizes quickly he's made a huge mistake, but won't admit up to it. He says he's been waiting for a tie. Yeah.
00:51:31
Speaker
for 20 minutes 20 minutes um not a good cover story um yeah you're just digging a deeper hole for yourself um we end up back in joey's audition and this is where he's taking over he's gonna teach all these all these know students how to was it pas de beret and ron de chan and all these things god yeah joe put Joey puts his own spin on it.
00:51:59
Speaker
I think we can see if we see. Yeah, pas de bourree, pas de bourree, grins. yeah on Slide back, step, step, step, and yeah jazz hands. And yeah Joey joe he has no idea, but he gives it a good shot. i mean, he he teaches them a routine. It's just not exactly the routine the director was looking for.
00:52:22
Speaker
um is this? I'm trying to think, is this? No, he's he's taught them, but we're not finished with that scene yet. We come back to that, I think, one more time.
00:52:34
Speaker
Yes. Yeah, we do. Whenever he does the actual thing. Yes, he has to model it for them. and Yes. All go south. But yeah, before that, right, Monica gets Julio the empty vase, she's put the bowl on it, and Phoebe just...
00:52:51
Speaker
she doesn' We don't see her telling Monica, but obviously she's about to break it to her that that she is indeed what the poem was about. Gives her hug around kind of her waist. um But Monica rightly, well, I think rightly, right? Yeah, he's upset with Julio.
00:53:11
Speaker
um And he seems to try and justify it because saying it's not just about Monica, it's about all women, but all American women. Right. Right. So, boo.
00:53:25
Speaker
Boo. Boo. We don't like that. We don't like him. um And I've just, i've I've got, it's one of my pet peeves is when people make these huge sweeping generalizations. Yeah. Like that.
00:53:39
Speaker
Like people also, what, you know, people back home will ask me what Americans think about this. Yeah. Well, there's, what, 350 million? You know, it's kind of hard. I haven't talked to all of them. Right, not recently, so it's quite hard.
00:53:54
Speaker
um That kind of overgeneralization, I don't know why it bugs me, but I always feel a little lazy and certainly wrong in this case um for him to come up with this negative generalization that just is...

Monica's Humorous Revenge on Julio

00:54:08
Speaker
is Just untrue.
00:54:10
Speaker
um But the dance audition, the the director, I'm assuming this is the director, asks Joey, like, show him how it's done, Joey. And in a moment of panic, again, there's something about the way the music is kind of cartoony, and he just legs it out the door. Okay, so I went back, and I was trying to count the eight counts.
00:54:34
Speaker
Because I feel like the music is about four, maybe a four count or an eight count too short to actually get in all the steps that he tried to tell Joey.
00:54:50
Speaker
that's deep diving that's fantastic well and i don't know that it really is a deep dive but like it just irritated me because it's a fast routine 100 fast routine yes but there's not enough music there to have actually gotten in all of it it's just not like It just couldn't be done. Couldn't be done. So, I don't know. But anyway, that was hilarious. And I love the way that he... There's like that big pause and then it starts. yeah Right. And then he runs out. It's like...
00:55:32
Speaker
yeah That makes sense. Yeah, I mean, what else are you going to at that point, I suppose? like he's he's like he's He's fired regardless, so you might as well just run out and yeah not turn back. Ah!
00:55:47
Speaker
ah We kind of finish. Let's see. we're out Sorry. Go ahead. Go ahead. No, it just made me laugh because he's like, well, that's all I could get out of them. And then he's like, people, people, people.
00:56:00
Speaker
That's one of those lines that that people, people, people. If anyone, if ever I hear somebody just say the word people, I have to almost, it's like Sheldon and the Big Bang Theory knocking on the door. I have to say people, people, people in my head. yeah just There's just no way around it. Right.
00:56:18
Speaker
I'm sitting here with a pen in my hand. It's not <unk>s got a naked woman in it like Chandler's in this second to last scene. so He's very excited. He's so stupid. He really is.
00:56:30
Speaker
He's so dumb. He's showing Rachel. Ross comes in. He apologizes to Rachel. I think we're both in agreement that Rachel lets him off far too easily.
00:56:42
Speaker
Well, I can't believe that she allowed it to get to the point that it got to. Right. Like. Yeah. it's It's, it's, it's, it's, I would say it's borderline icky. I don't know if it's borderline at all. It's just icky. Yeah.
00:57:00
Speaker
It is. It's all fueled by jealousy. He's not just in love and sending gifts, which would be over at the top. It's what it's fueled by for me. Because I'm pretty sure if they establish some, hate saying ground rules, or you know so they talk about Mark and they figure it out, the gifts are probably going to stop.
00:57:20
Speaker
Because it's really about Mark and not... His love for Rachel, which is just justst so bad. Chandler's bored with his pen, though. And i' would be I'm curious as to your feeling on Ross and this ah play date he's going on.
00:57:37
Speaker
He's an idiot. Right. He's just an idiot. I assumed we'd be on the same page here. Yeah, I mean, if you Like... Ugh. What?
00:57:52
Speaker
Why is that okay? Like on what planet was any of that? Okay. Your behavior, like it's so not okay for Rachel to what, have a man at her job?
00:58:12
Speaker
Right, and this is, Kate and I talked about this, everything Rachel has done, even if it was wrong, neither of it all three of us don't believe it's wrong, but it's all about work, and it's her new job.
00:58:24
Speaker
Everything is focused on that new job. Ross is going, you know what, I'm going to try and make Rachel jealous. I'm going to have a play date and go to a Gymboree class with the stripper for social fun stuff.
00:58:40
Speaker
Right. It's just, just. Right. Exactly. Because no, you didn't need to set up a play date with a random woman that you met and saw.
00:58:54
Speaker
yeah Like that doesn't make sense. You can go just take your son to a jimboree class. It's okay. Yeah, yeah i think i think that is alright.
00:59:06
Speaker
it's a gros It's just, yeah. I don't know. Don't know. Not his finest episode. I am glad we get one more scene in the Moonlight Diner and with the Barbershop Quartet.
00:59:20
Speaker
um Oh, hang on. Oh, do we have something? Cut from, another cut from your scene. So she she kisses Ross right before yeah he leaves, right? Yes. And then chance she he's you know she makes the comment like he's not going to forget that. And he's like, yeah, either that or you just... sent him off with that lady yes so then she looks at Chandler and then she goes she hops up and she goes she's like yelling I'm jealous I'm jealous and then she runs out the door after Ross yelling at him yeah I'm jealous I'm jealous
00:59:59
Speaker
And then Chandler goes back to playing with his pen and and makes like a whole little scene talking for the lady. Good old Chandler. So ridiculous. Ridiculous. So he really wasn't all that bored with the pen. Yeah. And they've been together a year, almost a year. Yeah. does it Doesn't feel healthy. Not going to lie.
01:00:21
Speaker
Doesn't feel like a good choice for either of them at this point. No. um But yeah, the Moonlight Diner, so glad we get to see it again. And the Barbershop Quartet who come in to serenade Julio and put him in his place. Yeah.
01:00:38
Speaker
good good old monica and then it's my favorite like cut down name calling butt munch butt munch again i love it i loved i love monica's know she kind of her head just appears from behind yeah the barbershop quartet And I was like, you know, she she is not flush with cash at this moment in time. We know she's struggling. Right.

She spent a lot of money, I'm assuming. Yeah. On this. I mean, good for her. But I was like, that so for somebody they'd been out on really, what, one date, maybe two.
01:01:17
Speaker
That was quite an expense. Lucy, lucy um the other girl that works there, I wonder, like, There had to be somebody else that went in with her. Maybe they chipped in because they're they're not not wild about about Julio.
01:01:35
Speaker
that Yes. Yes. That's it. But I like it. I like that it ended there. i like that ended with the barbershop quartet because for me they were a little highlight in this episode.
01:01:47
Speaker
Mm-hmm. They were awesome. Well, let's think, trying to think. You know what? How many love bugs are you going to give this episode? We've got to go straight with love bug. Okay. I was thinking of pairs of jazz shoes.
01:02:02
Speaker
Ah, that's equally good. Because we could do six, like hypothetically, six pairs and the left one if we needed six and a half. Oh, that's even better. Let's go jazz shoes.
01:02:14
Speaker
Jazz shoes it is. Okay, well, mine is a nice solid eight pairs. ah eight pairs all right all right mine's also solid but i'm just i'm sticking with seven a seven for me i don't love the rich the rachel ross story to me is just a little too oogie but i do enjoy elements of the julio one and i love the joey story yeah see i like all three of them The empty vase thing is something that I actually like refer to probably more often than I realize. um
01:02:50
Speaker
And...
01:02:54
Speaker
um Sorry, I just got distracted by something. You're fine. But this, like Ross sucks and it just highlights all the reasons why he sucks. It's laying that foundation for the brain.
01:03:08
Speaker
That's right. Not too far away. So I'm all right with it. i mean, yeah, he's Oogie and he sucks. And um does I would have been okay if I did not have Rachel running out the door after him going, I'm jealous. I'm jealous. You needed to watch the streaming version to avoid that. Yeah, but I got the most hilarious line, which was, you're so, you're such a mystery for me.
01:03:37
Speaker
that is That is brilliant. I love it. Yeah. um ah Do you have a Gunther Central, this week maybe it may might be a crystal chandelier. don't know. Could be for a one-off appearance or a Gunther Central part. Where are landing this week?
01:03:54
Speaker
I don't know. Yeah, this a tough one this is a tough one. It is. Like, okay, I think, I don't know. So I'm going back and forth between Monica and Joey.
01:04:07
Speaker
Okay. Yeah. mine i've got I've got mine chosen and it is one of them. Okay. Okay. But you know what? Yeah.
01:04:20
Speaker
I'm going to go Phoebe. oh Look at you. Look at you. Yeah. and Because you went Joey. um I did. You already you know you know. Yeah. You went Joey. And then I'm like, man, but Phoebe, she is so funny.
01:04:35
Speaker
And she's just everywhere in that. And I like to think that she probably chipped in. For that singing telegram. You know what? She would she would give her last dollar. Yeah, she would. yeah that's which That's what Phoebe does.
01:04:50
Speaker
Yeah. And then it was, yeah. Everything about that. So funny. I like it. Well, yeah, I went with Joey. Part of me, it wouldn't be fair. I wouldn't have actually written it down. I love the Barbershop Quartet so much. Like, they're for me a highlight, but they cannot be Gunther Central Park. So Joey, for his dancing, these little lines, like when he's reading the poetry and then he's done so much later after everyone else. Yeah. His his his attempt at dancing in the studio.
01:05:21
Speaker
I just, I think he stood out in this one for me, so. Yep, we're going to go with Joey in seven, and then Phoebe in eight. Eight. Eight, wasn't it, for you? It was eight. It was just a good episode. It is. Speaking of speaking of good episodes, again, i remember that the main story, but not all the subplots for next week.
