Speaker: Hello and welcome to this week's episode of the Purple Door Podcast, a friend's rewatch pod. I'm one of your hosts, Alistair, alongside Deanne. As always, Deanne, how are you today?
Speaker: I am just thrilled to pieces to be here talking with you about this week's episode, Al. As am I. We usually record on the weekends, but I was out of town last weekend, so it is Tuesday evening. Yeah, you were!
Speaker: Yeah, was. Visited daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter in Kansas, which was incredible. And I forgot... And I forgot to send the thing, but don't worry. Don't worry, I will get it to you. And maybe you'll enjoy it for a little while before it makes its way to Lenny.
Speaker: Indeed, and they will be visiting us in two and a bit weeks, so you will have to see little Linny when she comes in. They'll be here for a few days, so that's very exciting. But I did miss recording with you. It's part of our weekend routine, yeah and it was missing.
Speaker: So glad to be recording today. Today we are talking about the one with a chick and a duck. And I love this. the introduction The introduction of, in my head, it's the chick and the duck, but the episode is a chick and a duck.
Speaker: so Right, because we don't know yet. Okay, because you made this comment at the end of our last episode. That's right. about that And you were like, i had to keep looking at it to make sure. And so, of course, that's fresh in my brain while I was watching it. And I was like, it's because it's not the chick and the duck.
Speaker: yet Not yet. yet. I don't know at this point they knew like this, these would be reoccurring characters. Exactly. I mean, and they're part of the Friends folklore. I mean, I'm on several Friends Facebook pages and things. And the amount of people that get us a little silhouette or ah or an outline of a chick and a duck.
Speaker: is incredible it's part of the friend's legend yeah sorry tattoos done you know when they want to get a little friend's tattoo they get a little chick and a little duck or the husband gets one and the wife gets the other or somebody gets them both yeah it is definitely part of the a strong part of the fabric that makes up friends is the chick and the duck i love that yeah indeed Yeah, but before we get into that, as always, Kate has, she's gone through, she's checked her questions. We are ready for Bamboozled.
Speaker: All right, and I go first. You go first. All right. All right. This first one. Al, can you name at least three ice cream flavors that they serve at the Moonlight Diner? oh Oh!
Speaker: Wow, that's a good question. i know, it's so That's a great question. to be honest i have a list of five possibly six and i'm only asking for at least three that's a it's a very it's a great question it's fantastic and i that scene was in your episode you know what i don't think it was because unless you just so unless you just saw them in the background oh Okay, so it could have been. It could have been. Now, can I ask you, are they like unique names? Like, ah you know, let's see, Moonlight Mocha. Okay. So could I go with chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry?
Speaker: Sure. And you would be... ah yeah ya I had to just take a shot. One of those. Wow.
Speaker: What did you say? Chocolate, vanilla, and olen strawberry? Yeah. aren't those neapolitan flavors That's why I went with it. i was like, all right, I'll just go with those three. Well, no. Okay. So in the scene, whenever ah Pete comes and sees her in the diner.
Speaker: Yep. And then she like skates over to him and then she's skating away or whatever. And then they start talking and right behind her is a list like And it's big of all these flavors of ice cream. It's Rocky Road, coffee, pralines and cream, chocolate chip, pistachio, Neapolitan. And then it says almond and it starts with an M, but you can't see it because her body is there.
Speaker: so oh no you know what's funny though? In that scene, I did notice there was a big sort poster behind Monica that says damn ham salad.
Speaker: Oh, yes. And that just got me thinking. It's not the same scene. Okay. Okay. kids But I saw that one, too. You know, maybe I need to broaden my my horizons. I've never had a ham salad, nor have ever seen it, I don't think, on a menu. I've never noticed it. No.
Speaker: I don't know what it is, but I i was intrigued as well. It sounds healthy, I'm sure. yeah Indeed. let's Anything with salad in it, let's go with it. Except fine. like it. You're the Snickers salad that we were talking about at work yesterday. Yeah, well, that wouldn't quite fall in the same category. No. no no maroom but A mushroom. Oh, my God. Marshmallow salad and my mother and mom ate. Probably not healthy either. Probably not, but that's okay. A little treat now and again. Things are delicious. Exactly. All right, my first question for you. In the opening scene, what does Gunther have on his tie?
Speaker: no. Okay, his shirt's blue.
Speaker: Oh, no. Oh, no. Oh, no. And it's a dark colored tie. It is And it's something round. Nah, there's not something round.
Speaker: No. Okay, I don't know. Is it spaceship? It is not. It is lots of different. Sorry, my dog has decided to go nuts. There is all different letters in bright different colors.
Speaker: Really? Yes, indeed. Whenever he comes out and hands her the Coke pill? Yeah, when he brings the coffee outside for Rachel. yeah Yeah. Like a big red a a yellow S, a blue T. It doesn't spell anything, but it's lots of different letters down this time. er yeah Okay, well, speaking of the opening scene, what color was the mug?
Speaker: Ah, I knew this week I didn't look at the mugs. So so I'm going to guess i in my head for some reason, i'm thinking it's a red mug.
Speaker: It's pink. It's pink. Oh, it's close, but not close to that. I'm giving it if it was... I can't do it. I didn't get it. But I did think it's funny how che our Chandler, how Gunther is bending the rules for Rachel because he tells Joey or somebody at some point no drinks outside.
Speaker: Yeah. But because it's Rachel, he's willing to... Yeah. that Wasn't it ah Rachel? Oh yeah, maybe Rachel tells Joey no drinks. at some there' is For some reason there's no drinks outside.
Speaker: Yeah, I'm trying to think of why. Oh, does Rachel bring a drink out for Phoebe when she's busking or something? I don't quite recall now.
Speaker: But there is some ways. Yeah, some ways. it's a rule. It is indeed. Well, let's see. We're not doing great so far. Maybe i think you'll turn it around here. Who does Pete say he met on the plane? And what's her profession?
Speaker: o It's something short and she's a journalist. Is it Ash? You're definitely. Okay. You're going to get the point. oh oh No, why? Why?
Speaker: because it's Anne the journalist so you said short and with an A you get the point for Anne I don't feel good about that you didn't take red and red is white mean pink is red and white to me you said journalist and a short name and you said one them began with A so I like it we'll see how the game plays out okay we'll see what happens okay who was the other character employee in the moonlight diner
Speaker: Who is the other character employee?
Speaker: Oh, ah with no, I was going to say, it's is this from Monica's boss when she's going to go and tell him that she's leaving? No. you No, there's one other employee, and they're in a like, whenever they're in there, and then later, too.
Speaker: i'm just I know it's not right, but I'm just going to have to guess who Leo No, it's a waiter. It's a character. Like, they're dressed up as... Oh, dressed a character. Oh, goodness.
Speaker: I'm going to have to guess the Fonz. Oh, that's such a good guess. It's Elvis. it's ah Oh, it is Elvis. I can picture him now. And the red sequin thingy.
Speaker: Yes. Yep. ah All right. All right. I am on the struggle bus. Let's see if you get this one. How long does it take for Phoebe's suggestion of the roller skates to be implemented?
Speaker: Say that again. How long did it take Phoebe's suggestion of roller skating at the diner to be implemented? She made the suggestion in the suggestion box. but yeah yeah Because it's...
Speaker: two it's two weeks before the topless day. Yes, it is.
Speaker: and it's month it's either two months or three months.
Speaker: Is it three? It's three months. It's three months. Thank God. You got it. I love it.
Speaker: Okay.
Speaker: Um... Who? Oh, yes. What is the name of the person that gave Monica the necklace that she couldn't accept?
Speaker: oh i Oh, I'm struggling. i know it was a teacher. Yes. Yeah. Subject?
Speaker: Health sciences? Oh, it is a health teacher. Health teacher. So feel good giving you a point for that. All right. Okay. But i won't get the name. I won't get the name. Sue Vincent.
Speaker: Oh, that's it ah that's a great question. question. great question Logan. Let's see. My, ah let's see, is this one, two, three. Oh, I missed a question on my list. So this is question four for you. Rachel has a very large poster behind her bed.
Speaker: We see it in all the scenes with her and Ross in the bedroom. What two words are on it?
Speaker: It's a toughie. Is it, okay, wait, is it behind the head of her bed or yes like by the thing over on the side? But good question. they're Right above her headboard and it's about as wide as the bed.
Speaker: Is it black and white? It is. And that might give you a small hint as to what it says at the bottom.
Speaker: It's a very dark poster.
Speaker: this is this this i thought i felt this was a tough one this is a tough one yes is it yin yang it's not oh it's a good guess though with the black and white it's film noir oh okay man we are asking some hard questions and my last question is a tough one but kate got it so my Okay, good. We're in the same boat here. I like it. All right, give me my fifth and final question.
Speaker: All right. What was the fence made out of that kept the chick on the counter?
Speaker: Oh, that's a that's a great question. I know it was a shoebox that you the chick was brought home in, but that's not the question. The fence... Oh, that's a great question. I can picture it.
Speaker: I'm going to guess Lincoln Logs. You're correct. Yes. All right. Wow. All right. that was that That was a toughie. All right. If if we have both been generous to each other, I've got two out of five. You have two out of four.
Speaker: So. I better get it. Lots of pressure here. was I thought this was tough, but then Kate ka knew it. What color, and again, I'm going to be generous with this. What color and pattern is Ross's bow tie when he's wearing the white suit?
Speaker: Oh, it's red. Yes. And there's a pattern. You get the point. but there's There's a pattern. There's pattern. Is it with the black... a
Speaker: I don't know, but I remember it's not black because I felt like it needed to be black because they called him. what Hang on, because I'm going to ask a bonus question. And I felt like it should have been black, but it wasn't. It was red. Was it red and white, like fish scales? you're so you are i mean You've got the, it's red with white polka dots.
Speaker: Ah. Nicely done. Nicely done. All right. And with with that, you take the win of 3-2. That was a good round. I like that, those questions. do you have any extra? I have two extra.
Speaker: Okay, have All right, so I'll go first. So we'll go me, you, me. What time was Joey up in the night with the the chick trying to get her back to sleep from 2 to 5? 2 to 5?
Speaker: yeah You don't think I get up when you get up? Golly! Yes. Alright. Name three things that the girls reference in regards to Ross's suit.
Speaker: And that's why I felt like it should have been a black bow tie. Ah, okay. So he looks like he's got a job on a riverboat. Yeah. Which is a great line. at Colonel Sanders.
Speaker: Yes.
Speaker: magician? Nope. No, Carol said... I wonder if they were like, okay, okay. Okay, so tell us what you came in to tell us. And then Rachel said... Oh, I can't... I'm not going to get it. How you invented the... the...
Speaker: Nope, it's gone. Cotton gin. Cotton gin. ah It's such a riverboat captain. that I do love that line. That's a good one. My last one for you, nice and simple.
Speaker: How much did the chick cost? Three dollars. Three dollars. Joe's hoping they'd get it back. Yeah, but no. No, no, it doesn't work out that way. All right, let's get stuck into this episode. We both agree this is a good one. We do start outside of Central Park. Monica's practicing her roller skating because Phoebe made a suggestion to the rest a suggestion to the restaurant and she's very excited. An idiot customer. That's right, some idiot.
Speaker: And they decided to do it. It did get me thinking about um you Sonic, a very popular drive-in fast food place in these parts, and how they used to have people on skates, but for I don't know if they all that no longer do, but I feel like they don't.
Speaker: You know Courtney Starks used to be a roller skating Sonic girl. I did not know that. Yes, true story, she told us. um At our Sonic by our house, every once in a while, there will be somebody on skates. Okay.
Speaker: But it's not all the time or yeah I don't know how they, don't know. do you How do you feel about the old skates? Have you been on skates in your life like a few times? Oh, yes. And it is an accident waiting to happen now. Yeah.
Speaker: I, I,
Speaker: I always, always love the idea of going to the roller rink. I love it. Right. Love it. And then i go. And the older that I've gotten, whenever I go there, I'm always like...
Speaker: maybe this wasn't such a bright choice. How much money is it going to cost me whatever? and because I inevitably fall at least twice yeah every single time.
Speaker: And I'm not, i i can get going and I can go around in the circle, but man, anytime I try to do anything fancy, like I always want to do like the crossover thing. Yes. Looks pretty cool.
Speaker: Yeah. It does. But I can't. um Yeah. So there you go. Yeah. I'm this i'm the same. Yeah. yeah I mean, I've never, I've never skated other than a couple of times at the the local roller rink. We've taken the kids over the years. I've joined in.
Speaker: like i i can sort of go in a straight line, kind of go around in a circle and I can stop But I kind of get it. Like, I get why it's fun. Like, the people that flying around, I'm kind of envious, going, I wish I could do that. But like you, the older I get, the more I think I'm not going to be able to bounce back like I used to.
Speaker: And this could get expensive. and So I will park myself over on the side. Yes. Yes. But I do enjoy it, you know, when I've done it.
Speaker: Yeah. Yeah. um Gunther comes out and he gives a drink to Rachel and Monica ends up crashing into Rachel, um which ends up being all this this injury that Rachel gets less throughout the whole episode. um Yeah.
Speaker: It's a family friendly show, but Joey comes out and let's just say he misreads the situation. Yeah, but did you notice he has a to-go cup? I did notice that. And again, I thought that's a, they need to have him come outside somehow, but to have a good, you don't see it, uh, a to go cup very often. You don't, you don't, but cups aren't allowed outside. Indeed. The paper, paper ones only. We go over to the boys apartment. Chandler, he's grown a goatee since last week. well um And this is one of the funniest lines.
Speaker: Which one? Because to me, the set there's several good ones here. Looking like Satan. Right? Yes. Because he's like, with that goatee, you look like Satan. And I'm just, what? then without missing that beat, he's like, ah, that's why the priest threw the whole thing.
Speaker: Oh, no. So good. Joey's still down in the dumps about Kate here. wait. Wait.
Speaker: Oh, wait. Kate made me take away question number five. i pied We had one that was apparently very similar.
Speaker: OK, and it was about the TV show, right? there yeah Yes, but yes. But I did want to ask you because I don't know who Quincy is or what it is.
Speaker: I know. That's one of my things that I went. is My parents used to watch this show. on Okay. And it ran to
Speaker: and i did not like it And so I had to have been very young, very young, because i remember that guy. And whenever I saw him in the doctor's suit, like I knew the name of that show immediately. And so I Googled it and I was like, wow, why do I remember that? So they had to have watched it on reruns. But um it was, is a medical examiner, Quincy.
Speaker: The main character that you see, and he's in the scrubs. And um he's a medical examiner, and he helps the police solve like mis murders and things like that. Okay.
Speaker: Yeah. All right. Yeah, I didn't know that. and that's And I probably didn't like because it was scary. But, you know, if you're little, that is scary. Yeah, that should be scary. I would find it fascinating now. Right. You'd be all over it. Right? Yeah.
Speaker: well chandler ross are gonna go out i'm curious as to where they're going i don't think they say they sure don't yeah going without chandler sure does shed that vest quickly doesn't yes as soon as joey says he saw a girl wear it which is just funny line but ross comes in he's all excited he's gonna be on tv Yeah.
Speaker: He's going to be talking about, I think I wrote it down, yeah, talking about fossils that they found in Peru and Chandler's like, who's going to watch that? Which could be a valid point. Yeah.
Speaker: But yeah, Ross, pretty excited about this, this little opportunity. um We come to the point where Joey, he's watching a news report. It's definitely on the news. But he calls the pet store and says that he saw a commercial about chicks, which I just can't. Which I thought was so funny because he's already calling.
Speaker: He's already looking up the number. Like before they made the said on the TV that most of these chicks will be dead by the 4th of July because improper care. He's already on the phone calling cause he wants one. He's sold on this chick idea.
Speaker: I thought it was so funny. It was great. And I was trying to decide if it was just a you know a slip up in the script or something that he says commercial. Or is that just Joey? Because he's not paying attention to the the fact it's news. He just thinks that he's showing chicks. Yeah, that was kind of it.
Speaker: That's what I thought. Like, you know those dog commercials that make it cry? Yeah. Yeah, oh if you just donate $11 a month or something. Yeah, i figured that's what I figured he thought it was because it was on mute while they were in there.
Speaker: And then he took it off. and That's right. that's what had happened, you know, because I could send mute up in the corner while he was talking with Ross and Chandler.
Speaker: And then he unmuted it and then it was the news. Yeah. It's all about these poor chicks. it Just, yeah. Just depression and ADHD. I think so. We go over to the diner next and Pete has returned. was going to ask you where he's just come back from.
Speaker: oh Japan. He's just come back from Japan. And what did he bring for Monica? Yeah. hotel toiletries that's right and made in texas yeah pray yes going in her special i was a permanent collection yes but that's whenever the right behind her that's whenever i was in that scene right he says that because like it it's looking at him and he's like made in texas haha and then it goes to her and then right behind her is that poster that has all of the different I think the Made in Texas line might have been cut.
Speaker: Oh, really? Because I think I would have caught that because I've got a little story for you. I may have told you before that that would have reminded me of. um Have I told you this story before? 10 years ago, one of the times I went back home ah in Scotland and went to the name of the real street has suddenly escaped my head. But it's in Edinburgh where J.K. Rowling wrote Harry Potter.
Speaker: And it's the real street that inspired Diagon Alley. And there is a Harry Potter store, just a little, you know, very small one as there should be. And I bought, I'm sure it for the kids or something, you know, I assume, what are they got They're like the chocolate frogs.
Speaker: um that That rings a bell. I'm not very familiar with Harry Potter. And I got them, brought them back, looked on the back, and they are made and distributed in Irving, Texas, which is about 20 miles from both of us.
Speaker: And I remember thinking that they got flown all the way over there only for me to bring him back. That's funny. Yeah. Yeah. Yes. But he also has big news, does Pete? He has bought a restaurant.
Speaker: he is a He has bought this restaurant and there's only one person he wants to be the head chef. That is Monica. Yeah. But we we'll get into that, I think, in just a minute.
Speaker: Because is this? no that No, he doesn't talk about Anne, the lady he allegedly met yet. No, not yet. That's right. We go up to the girl's apartment, right? and she's talking about... To Rachel. That's right about the situation.
Speaker: I was going to ask you about ah Monica's... winever Or the name of Monica's Bakery. Yes, he's easy Monica's Bakery. Poor old innocent Monica.
Speaker: She was just just a young thing. She didn't she didn't know that that how that name could be misconstrued. um But this is where Ross comes in wearing this.
Speaker: This is quite a bold choice, this suit. He comes in... And didn't wear it because Rachel didn't like it, but she's not his girlfriend anymore. So now he's free to look ridiculous or whatever it is. As stupid as you like. Yes. This is what it is. Now that you're on your own, you can look as stupid as you like. Yes. And this is, yeah, this is the riverboat, Colonel Sanders, all of that stuff, right? In this scene. Okay. Okay. Go ahead and tell us.
Speaker: Okay. Ew. Okay. And then they how did, how you invented the cotton gin? And then after he left, okay, I was curious if this got cut because they said, um Monica looked at Rachel and she was like, was that a little harsh?
Speaker: She goes, oh no, it's not nearly as bad as when you'd wear that gray sweatsuit and we'd call you the Lindenberg. ah That did get cut. Yes. I had a feeling it probably would because I was like, that scene was hilarious. And that just kind of showed y'all are jerks. Right. that's That crossed the line. That one was a bit. Right. Right. um We go just across the hall now to the boys apartment. Chandler and Phoebe, they're talking about the suggestion box. This is where we find out it was three months. Three months. In my notes.
Speaker: Yep. Right there. until and it's because i typed it in yes until Chandler's suggestion he hopes will come to fruition but this is where Joey bursts and he's very excited he has a gift for Chandler and it is a chick um I don't think Chandler doesn't know quite know what to make of this certainly at this point uh I had to look this up I don't know if you knew this what the easy Lenny was in reference to and I have a thing pulled up about
Speaker: Did you know? no I had no idea. Did you know? Oh, man. I've never read of Mice and Men. Okay, so you've never read it and you've never seen it. Never. Because it's also a movie and it's a play.
Speaker: Like a play that's done often. It is so sad. It's one of those ones I know the name, you know, um but I've just never seen it.
Speaker: It is so sad. it's um It reminds me a lot. Did you ever read or see ah Flowers for Algernon?
Speaker: No, again, I know of it, but never read or seen it. Now, i have written now John Steinbeck is who wrote yes A Mice and Men. Completely different genre, but one of my favorite books of all time. He also wrote called Travels with Charlie, which is just super... It's autobiography,
Speaker: where he decides to take basically road trip around the country ah yeah with his dog. it's I just... I actually think I've read that too. Yeah, it just it's it's such a different time. like He writes a letter to Ford, I think, saying, I want to do this. What vehicles do you have that would suit this journey? And six weeks later, he gets a letter. But you know it's it's such a different time.
Speaker: and and ah it's just just brilliant. but I didn't know that easy Lenny, that line came from of mice and men. yes yes no idea and so okay you know the story and who lenny was well i understand in the brief bit i read he's a character who does kill animals by squeezing them something like that purpose so he's he's mentally challenged ah right mentally challenged and he he loves soft things
Speaker: So often soft things are small, great right? Right. And he'll rub them. A lot of times, you know that Looney Tunes character? He's like ah an abominable snowman and he's like, I will call him George and I will pet him and I will love him. Yes.
Speaker: You know that guy? Yes. That's what I always think of. Like that's what, whenever I originally read it in the high school, that's what I like. connected with right right and um but um yeah he ends up killing a human ah yeah and it's and not on purpose and not because he's mean or anything but like him and and then the main the main character his name is george and the two of them are like going around and it's back whenever uh like the great depression
Speaker: And so they're very poor and they're kind of grifters is what they are, but not like in the bad way, like, and they're not stealing things or anything, but like they would do things and then they would move on. And, uh, you know, Lenny was really, really big and then George was small. So they kind of matched right like that.
Speaker: Right. And then, um, they're working on a, like a ranch or a farm or whatever, but the boss, the like head guy, his wife, comes out and was really nice and made friends with Lenny and everything. And so ah he's like cuddling her in and kills her.
Speaker: and Right. And so he's sad and then George ends up, you know, saving him from being in trouble. Gotcha. Bye. Bye. It's sad. It's so sad. Sad but worth watching.
Speaker: I wouldn't watch it. I would read it. It reads it. Okay. Yeah. It's just sad. Just sad. Yeah. And the same thing. Like Flowers for Algernon, it ends and you're like, God, that was sad.
Speaker: That sucked. But then you can be like, yeah, I read that. That's right. I can say I read it. Yeah. Yeah. So like, maybe you don't want to, maybe I just ruined it. You're welcome. Everybody who. There we go. No need to read it. No you know what happens no need to get sad by reading that story. boilers ahead I should have said that. I didn't know I was going to do that. so You had feelings. It's quite all right. did oh gosh. Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah. Okay. I'm going to need you. Put those on your list, Al. All right. Moist men and flowers for Algenon. Flowers for Algenon. Well, i tell you, it's not sad. Monica's not sad because she initially says... salad This is where you see ham salad. Okay. Yeah. All right. fineness Yeah, that really jumped out at me because i was like, I've just never heard of such a thing. um But she says she can't do the job because, you know, Pete's just doing it because he he he loves her.
Speaker: But he's like, if that's the problem, we've not got a problem. He met and the journalist. They had a funny joke about peanuts on the plane and they're now dating and... You know, so that's so Monica is able to get the job.
Speaker: um Two things I noticed in this scene. One is I'm sure we'll be I know we all have this. Anyone who's listening to this podcast, when they hear certain words, they can only say in their head, you know, in a line from friends. So whenever I see the word fictitious in my head, she's fictitious. no.
Speaker: is I have to play that in my head. it's I'm hardwired. It has to be done, um which I just love. I love Phoebe's delivery of that. But also, we need to raise a metaphorical glass. You do love the Moonlight Diner, and this is the final scene, I believe, in the Moonlight Diner.
Speaker: Which is so sad. It is But that's one of the reasons why i like this episode so much is because we spend so much time in the diner. Yeah, the diner's a great set, and I love seeing Monica in in in this mode, being the waitress in so in in this kind of place. um Yes.
Speaker: Yeah, lots of good memories. Yeah. And there's just so much cool stuff to look at. Yes. And what ah what a fun place with the fun backgrounds and a and whole lot of ice cream flavors and then ham salad sign. But, like, I was looking at all this stuff, and one of my questions was going to be name at least, like, four things that are on the counters in the Moonlight Diner. Oh, that would be great. i would struggle.
Speaker: And – It was actually, if for a moment, I was toying with the idea of all of my questions being about the Moonlight Diner. Oh, that would be fun. Yeah, because I was like, how would I ask the question? But there's a jukebox in there. But like you can't see any of the music, and there's nothing other than like the jukebox. It's not like the kind that has like the bubbles that are going yeah around. And so i was like, how do I even ask a question about that jukebox?
Speaker: I just want you to notice that there's a jukebox. Have you ever been, if you drive from where we live, just north of Dallas to Oklahoma City, which is, a two and a half hour drive, there's a small town called Paul's Valley, Oklahoma.
Speaker: which And if you pull off there, pull off I-35, there's a a restaurant right there called the Happy Days Diner, which looks just like this. Oh, really? It's all 60s and 70s memorabilia, a jukebox, everything you you would think.
Speaker: And so the Moonlight Diner reminds me of the Happy Days Diner that is in Paul's Valley, Oklahoma. Okay. Yeah, well worth a visit if you're on your way and fancy a bite to eat.
Speaker: um But yeah, Pete thinks or says that he's convinced Monica that he's got this new girlfriend, so she's able to quit. She goes to tell her boss and smashes into something that we don't see.
Speaker: um But Phoebe calls him out on it, and Pete admits that she's made up. But Phoebe's not going to spill. She's not going to tell Monica what's going on here.
Speaker: We end up back in the boys' apartment. I love that Chandler's singing to the chick with the chick chick here and the chick chick there. i just And then chick chick chicken as Joey walks in. like he just tries to cover it up. And I do love equally the situation of whether it's a boy or a girl and yeah trying to figure that out.
Speaker: um Yeah, it's and one of those... Oh, their whole little fight. Because then they roll straight into the, how dare you go out and meet the cast for drinks? I took off of work to be home. Yes.
Speaker: And yeah, maybe we weren't ready for a chick. Yeah, we're going to chick someday. Yeah, it's it's so sad. It's so funny. Yes.
Speaker: But just where I think they agree to take the chick back to the store, and then Ross comes in, and I guess he's decided to ditch the white suit because he asks their opinion on the brown or the blue suit.
Speaker: Yes. Oh, I was going to ask you about the brown. ah Why does Joey like the brown suit, and why does Joey like the blue suit? ah Does the brown bring out his eyes, and the blue, his butt looks good?
Speaker: There you go. That's it. Yeah. Really? i don't know. I was like, made out um Let's see. We're in the girl's apartment. and This is where Rachel can... She is she is hurting. She is in pain. Yeah, she is. Tries to get the aspirin out the bottle and it just goes all over the floor.
Speaker: And Ross comes in. he said What does he say? Something like that aspirin dance worked. Oh, dance really worked. I was going to ask you where she was meant to go that night.
Speaker: Oh, yeah, to her boss's dinner party. Yes, that's right. She's got to go. There's important people there. She's got to meet people. Yes. But she asked Ross if he would stay and help.
Speaker: I've got to say, most of Ross in this episode, I think, is a very noble. easy We do see we see the good side of Ross mostly. We'll get to where just digress.
Speaker: We see mostly good Ross in this episode. yeah it's tough one tough words for a tough pill for you to swallow but oh okay and then whenever who is it that comes in and asks do you guys know how to get a chick out of a v-sandler races in in a panic yes yes I have a story about that. Of all the things you could have a story about, I wouldn't have thought this was it.
Speaker: My cousin Max, whenever he was probably, i don't know, five or six. Okay. He had a VCR in his room.
Speaker: And um ah he he was a very busy child, obsessed about the weather and a Doppler radars and all kinds of things, right? Right. But very, very busy, very, very busy and into all kinds of things, but ah ah just stupid smart, like crazy smart. Yeah.
Speaker: And so he got in trouble because he put a burrito o from Taco Bell into his VCR in his room.
Speaker: Why? why would one Why? Because he really wanted to see if it would play a burrito commercial. This is phenomenal.
Speaker: That's one of funniest stories that we bring up randomly whenever we're all together. But that the time that he put a burrito inside of the VCR wrecked the VCR because he wanted to say, if it bring up a Taco Bell commercial, like a burrito. This is amazing. i mean, that we've all done stupid stuff, especially as kids, but that, that's, that is something.
Speaker: It is. And I cannot believe you you have a story relating to the chick in the VCR. Of course. yeah Of course. Why not?
Speaker: I love that. We go we're over into Rachel's bedroom. This is where Ross is trying to help her put the makeup on and it's not going well. Why did he lick the brush? Right. In what world do you lick any brush like that? I don't know. Like, I didn't know if that was like a painting thing. Like, I could not. i don't understand. like Yeah. Like, i i can...
Speaker: comfortably say I've never put makeup on myself or anyone else ever I don't think really i don't now I'm thinking about it even in evenly for a costume i don't think I've ever put makeup on but I wouldn't lick a brush i think I would be aware enough to think that's that's not what you do yeah yeah man I'm super curious why you think Ross sucked It's coming up. The bit where I think... yeah um So I won't spoil it. um Okay. Oh, i'm I'm curious because I don't know how, but I have missed this. So let's continue. All right. Well, he puts far too much on her eye. She looks... um I guess date dated reference. She says she'll sit next to the transvestite from purchasing or something. No! She doesn't say that yet. Oh, that that later on. Oh, that's right. That's kind the end. where enough of this. and That's right. And he's like, it makes you look sophisticated. And then she says, sophisticated like a
Speaker: That's right. That's right. um And before they finish all the makeup, we do bounce on over to Central Park for a minute because Phoebe is trying to tell Monica about Pete, but she made a promise not to. So she is nodding, shaking her head. This scene felt like a bit of a filler scene, but it you know it was quite funny because Monica was really trying.
Speaker: yeah But they ended up Oh, i did I did quite like the line. Was it, you know, ah what was it, clause or something? So Monica gets all excited. Yeah, but that's later.
Speaker: Is that later too? That's later. Yeah, because you get the just the little brief thing where they're going back and forth, and then it pops back over, and then that's whenever she makes the comment about the transsexual from purchasing. That's right. um And while we're going into that scene now, I think, quick quick thought.
Speaker: I've never noticed this before, but Rachel's bedroom is an odd shape. It has like a little entryway. Every bedroom I think that I can think of is just a rectangle.
Speaker: But this has a funny little entryway, which Monica's doesn't have. um Don't know why. just Just something. Because of where her closet is. Okay, is that it?
Speaker: Uh-huh. Okay. yeah and You know what? Her closet's there because that's where they put the cameras to film scenes in the living room because they take that big French picture down. So that'll be why it's there.
Speaker: Because, yeah, they take that famous French picture down whenever they film things facing towards the door. Well, there you go. So that's it that's why it's there. We got there together. I like that.
Speaker: love that for us. We are like professionals. I think so. I think at this point we might as well just call ourselves professional friends podcasters. Yeah.
Speaker: But yeah, so let's see, Ross has put far too much on. And this is the bit where I find him a little creepy, where she says that, you know she asked him stay and help her get dressed, but she doesn't want him to see her naked.
Speaker: Oh, yeah. he just It's not awful, because I know they're kind of being friendly. that It's not flirtatious, but they're being friendly and kind of joking. But, yeah you know, to me, it just crosss it begins to cross that line into ooginess.
Speaker: Oh, okay. Just a bit. And then he made the comment, though, it's all or it's weird if you make it weird. like That's true. doesn't matter. Just get over it. Yeah.
Speaker: yeah i don't hate him. I don't hate him in this. Look at you. Look at you go. I know what I'm about. a Yes. He says he's going to call a cab because she needs to go to the hospital. She can't get dressed. She asks him to go with her and he agrees to.
Speaker: She doesn't. No? She does not ask him to go. Because he goes, I'll call you a cab. And then she says, you're not coming with me. And then he goes, of course I am. The husband in me interprets that as asking, but she did not ask. You are right. No, she just, she is asked, you're not coming with me.
Speaker: And he was like, of course I am. Yes, he's going to go. He just has to make a call. And while he's making this call, she's taking off the makeup. um Yeah, she is. Because she can't go to the hospital looking like that Absolutely not. um We go back to over to Central Park. This is the bit I was talking about where she figures that it's something to do with Pete. And what does she say? Like claws or paws or something? That clogs.
Speaker: c clos and it Clogs, goes, clogs or claws? And she's like, clogs. and And no. No. Claws? No. No. and then she goes through everybody and it's Pete.
Speaker: And then she's like, mm-hmm. And then it's Pete's computer company. And she's like, oh, my gosh, just go. You're never going to get it. Right. She just won't say. she She is a lady of her warrant, as Phoebe. she's She's not going to actually say what's going on. um I was going to ask you if this next scene what the chick's name is.
Speaker: Oh, I know. It's a little Yasmin. That's right. Because Chandler and the chick Yasmin are watching Baywatch discussing Yasmin Bleeth, who I think Matthew Perry was either dated around this time or something, didn't he? Yes.
Speaker: He loves them both, but in very different ways. Yes. Which I just love. She's different kind of chick. That's right. But in very different This might be my favorite scene, this little bit. between I love that. And then I love when Joey comes in and they have to, you know, have a discussion over to the side so the chick doesn't hear. Yes, because she just couldn't. Yeah, you wouldn't want to expose little Yasmeen to the harsh reality of the animal shelter. Oh, God. The store wouldn't take her back. The shelter will end up killing her.
Speaker: And then you hear this quack in the background. No! First he says, because first he says, you know... all kinds of animals yes yes yes you hear the quack and then here comes the duck yes funny story that's right yes i forgot quite how it played out but it's so good it's so good so funny We go over to, let's see, we'll just call it Pete's Restaurant because we never do find out the name. Monica. Oh, and speaking of, it's the same restaurant. I did double check this. um
Speaker: that From season two where Monica has to make the salad for that creepy guy. He's like the health inspector. Yeah. It is that it is the same set. Yeah. She's touring the kitchen. She loves the spider burners and the big, was it a walk-in freezer or fridge or something? Fridge. She can live in there. That's right. She'd be cold, but she's always cold.
Speaker: um And then she goes to give him a hug and he smells her hair. And that sends her spidey senses a tingling because she realizes that maybe this isn't as quite as wholesome as it appears. on it Not platonic. He's still got ideas about Monica and she has to say she can't do it.
Speaker: Although is this the scene? Do they kiss in this scene? um yeah Yeah, they do. Because she says, I was sweet, right? Because he you know he says that he loves her and she's like, well, you're really, really nice. And and he's like, i I'm all right being hurt. It's fine. yeah And then shea and she's like, I'm not okay being the one that's good that'll hurt you.
Speaker: and then she hugs him and kisses him. on the cheek and then he kisses her and then she was like oh wait a minute yeah there might be some chemistry there um i didn't look ahead but i was just going off my memory i don't think we ever see her actually working there i don't think this is discussed again whether she works for pete I don't know.
Speaker: Yeah, i again but'll we'll see if there's any references in the next few episodes, but I don't think Monica Warking comes up in the next few episodes, because I think they would have they would have revisited this set, and she's in the kitchen, and Pete's the owner. There could have been a storyline there, but I don't think there is at all.
Speaker: um This is one of my favorite scenes in the hallway where Ross is walking Rachel back from the hospital. Chandler's putting the duck in time out.
Speaker: um Yelling at the duck and ros was Ross saying something like, is that a duck? Or is or something like that. Wondering what the world is going on.
Speaker: yes well and he's telling rachel she you know you you can't look fat in an x-ray are you yeah she's honest yeah yes i just he's being he's being the good guy but chandler is genuinely upset with the duck which i just i just love chick is not a toy Not a toy. That's right.
Speaker: um We go into the girl's apartment and this is where Rachel finds out that Ross was supposed to... because Chandler says, how did the thing go tonight? Rachel wants to know what it is and Ross explains he was supposed to be on television. But he didn't go because she needed him.
Speaker: um And then I think they had just... It was like a little kind of silent moment. Like it was kind of nice. but I think Rachel's like working through her her feelings.
Speaker: um I did again i mean this isn't like praising Ross for doing the right thing but I think Ross being Ross in previous episodes could have tried to take advantage of the situation by trying to marry he did but he didn't he didn't so you know again you don't overly praise him for just doing what he should do but credit where it's due he didn't become a jerk that he has been in the past I feel He just did the right thing here. But he goes out and sits down in the hallway. Chandler, and what did you do? Yeah, that was funny. Yeah, it's it's such a great touch, this bit, in in the hallway.
Speaker: um But yeah, we wrap this one up with ah we're in the boys' bathroom. Chandler's got the duck in the bath. And then, you know, chicks don't chicks don't swim. Well, or do they? So they put the chick in and Joey wants to leave it there for a while. arab Yeah, just give him a minute. Just give him a minute. No!
Speaker: That's why you end with the... Yeah. No, we don't need that. So Chandler fishes out. won't it to the 4th of July. Right. He won't make it a couple of days at this rate. And then, ah yeah, i love the way Chandler fishes him out and Joey just breaks out the hairdryer.
Speaker: Yeah. And checks it on his hand. Yeah. Yeah. Warms it up Make sure it's fine. Take care of his ah his little chick here. But yeah, this, again, i like i feel like we say this all the time, but I thought, okay, the chick, the duck, I know that story, but I'd forgotten the rest of this completely.
Speaker: And Man Alive, this was a good episode. Well, and it really was. And I had forgotten like why they even got the chick in the first place.
Speaker: I remembered why they ended up with the duck, was because they tried to take the chick back. But I had forgotten that like Joey was depressed because of Kate and you know, like why?
Speaker: and she just was there for a minute, you know? Yeah. No, it's. But she pops back up. Yes. Right. Right. Yeah, think so. With the spaceship. Yeah, because the understudy and him and he's like, where'd she go? Because she takes off to go to piano soap opera. I assumed that was going to be this week's episode, but I was like, they're skipping a week.
Speaker: and Yeah. And maybe maybe that's next week. I'm not quite sure. Well, let's see. Who would be your Gunther Central Park of the week this week?
Speaker: So I'm struggling, Al. Right. Yeah. You know why? Is it because Ross was a good guy? So he's one of your. Yes, because I wrote down Ross question mark Chandler question mark. And I'm going to have to go with Ross simply for the reason that don't hate him.
Speaker: I like it because I only wrote down one name and that name was Chandler. So that's right. But Ross, a definite honorable mention. I'm with you. To me, he would have been my second choice. He's a wholesome guy in this episode doing the right thing.
Speaker: He's kind of selfish as a character. Not not this week. He puts Rachel's lead. And i don't hate him. Yeah. I don't hate him. And he wears that suit like he's proud. You know, yeah, he owns that suit. I love it. I love it. Yeah, he does. Well, let's see. How many how many little chicks do you think? I think this week could be little yellow. We can't do half a chick, though. We're going to have to go whole numbers. Oh, crap.
Speaker: Yeah. Well, I have a half number. Okay. So maybe. or Or we could do what could we do? what what could be a I can round up. round up. We could round Okay. Or we could have ducks and then the chicks are the half. that See, that's why you're on this podcast. Yes. There it This is why you we we need Deanne every week yeah for this level of higher order thinking. There you go. Ducks are the whole point. Chick is the half point.
Speaker: All right. So I ah gave this episode eight ducks and a chick. I think that's great. i want stick but i mean, I don't understand either, to be fair, but that's fine.
Speaker: i've i've gone with a solid eight i'm just going with with eight solid ducks it was it was again one of those episodes i finished watching it gosh i forgot how good that was yeah it really was a good episode eight solid ducks yeah i love it well let's see next next week al next week would be i Tell me. Speaker: Yeah, I'm not sure. I'm going to, this I think I do because I'm assuming that the it's the last part, the last bit of the story of Joey's play and it goes along with that, I think, the Screamer storyline.
Speaker: um But I'll need to i'll just have a look when I watch it this week. ah But let's think, yeah, I think it's safe to say we've both been pleasantly surprised. I know which one this is.
