00:00:04
Speaker
Well, hello and welcome to this week's episode of the Purple Door Podcast, a friend's re-watch pod. I'm one of your hosts, Alisa, alongside Deanne. Deanne, how are you this evening?
00:00:15
Speaker
Awesome, Al. Good. I have to tell you, I love spring. I do. Spring is like 70 degrees Fahrenheit all week. The sun is out. It is a glorious time here in North Texas, I tell you what.
00:00:30
Speaker
It is. And it rained a couple of days ago, so it's not too dry. It's just yeah so nice. It's beautiful outside. It is indeed. It's one of these windows in the the year that I just love when it's sunny but not too hot.
00:00:47
Speaker
I'm excited. Well, we we were we haven't recorded in a week or two, so I've missed I've missed doing this. I'm excited to get back. We got a couple of weeks ahead because we knew we had some things on um back on schedule now. I'm looking forward to digging into this episode with you.
00:01:03
Speaker
Same. And what a good one. It's so funny. Very funny. Very funny. moments I am good looking forward to this.

Game Segment: Bamboozled

00:01:14
Speaker
We will, of course, start with bamboozled. Now, Kate was unable to look through our questions, but we both have some extras.
00:01:20
Speaker
So I think we're going to be just fine. If I say a question that you have, we'll just cancel that question out and use another one. Okay. Sounds good. Well, as always, need to remind me who's going to find it. Okay, I do odd, you do even. This is episode 18, so you're first. All right. Well, I'm going to start with, in the opening scene, what magazine is Joey reading? Oh!
00:01:50
Speaker
Oh, no, your sound just cut out. Let's see. Why? oh no, there you go. You're back. You're back. I think I was just scratching my arm and my ah face covering it. Ah, something happened for Jennifer. You're back. You're back. It's me just freaking out. That's all. Because I don't have... a Is it time?
00:02:08
Speaker
It is not time. it I'll give you another... another go for it again. A but little more joy than time. Entertainment Weekly? It is not. it is that it is so Is it people? It's not.
00:02:21
Speaker
I have no idea. It's the proper digest. That would be the best thing ever if it was. But unfortunately, it is. It's not. That was little. have no idea.
00:02:33
Speaker
Yeah. It is Sports Illustrated. Illustrated. Sports Illustrated. There you go. All right. There we go. All right.
00:02:45
Speaker
All right. This one has two parts. Okay. Okay. Where did Ross go and what did he get hypnotized to do? Okay.
00:02:58
Speaker
He went to Atlantic City. Oh, dang it. Yes. And he... i can't quite picture this, and I think I'm glad about it. Somehow or another, he plays Wipeout on his butt cheeks.
00:03:13
Speaker
That's correct, Al. Good

Friends Episode Discussions

00:03:15
Speaker
job. Yeah, I remember that distinctly. Because um I was unsure about all of that. He drops his pants and plays Wipeout. That's right. And it cut out... It cut on your version... um why he said he did it because he said he was just trying to distract from the poor lady who had been hypnotized to do something else ah yes I did not see that I know my goodness okay I didn't want to say it though
00:03:47
Speaker
I love the fact that my second question sort of has two parts. I thought you might be asking this. um Monica has dated two guys in the last year. Can you name both of them?
00:03:59
Speaker
Yeah, you can. yeah Yeah, I can. ah Pablo and Richard. Now, you're getting the point. It's not Pablo. It sounds like it's not Pablo.
00:04:10
Speaker
It's Pablo? No. What? It's that?
00:04:20
Speaker
You're getting the point because you're very close, but... Pedro? No. paul It's not Paulo. It kind of sounds like it, kind of, in the end.
00:04:35
Speaker
It's the guy, the base, the empty base guy. It is? It's the guy that works there. Let me give you a hint. Who is it? Who? Who? who who Is this a hint? It's a hint.
00:04:53
Speaker
Who could it be?
00:04:58
Speaker
Who is this guy? Will i tell you his name? Yeah, go ahead. His name is Julio. Julio! Oh my god.
00:05:10
Speaker
Yeah, we don't we're not a fan of Julio. No, I hate that name. Kind of sleazy. I hate that name. Okay. Dang, Al, I'm losing.
00:05:22
Speaker
It's okay. Well, it depends what happens here. You got the point because you got Richard and Barry close to Julio. So let's see what happens with my second question that you're going to give me. All right. What color was the mug that had Rachel's drink that she didn't want cinnamon in?
00:05:40
Speaker
yeah but I need to start looking at clothes. And then he just reaches in and takes it out. Scoops it out. honey i I have no idea, I'm going to guess purple.
00:05:52
Speaker
It's red. It's red. was going to say so close, but not really. Not really so close. Yeah, it is. Red is, i mean, purple is red and blue.
00:06:03
Speaker
Yeah, it's not far away. like You're right. yeah Yeah, and not far, not far. All right, well, let's see. I'm ready. We've both got one right one wrong so far, I think.
00:06:14
Speaker
So let's see. Question three for you is what is Richard Ent's name? No, you don't mean Richard's aunt's name.
00:06:27
Speaker
You mean Pete's aunt. Wow. Yes, I do. I've written down Richard. I bet you're, of course I do. Thank you for correcting that question. That's okay because that's my number five. Okay. So we'll take that question out. It's Ruth.
00:06:40
Speaker
It is Ruth. Indeed. My grandmother's names. Oh, nice. All right. So my question three then for you is going to be, what did Monica watch on television last Saturday night?
00:06:51
Speaker
Oh, Walker, Texas Ranger. Walker, Texas Ranger. Indeed. All right. Nice. What statues are in the boys apartment?
00:07:06
Speaker
There's three of them and they move around.
00:07:12
Speaker
They're on the bookshelf behind Frank Jr. Jr. And then they're on the. cover Yeah. Yeah, they are. is is it the three stooges? It is the three stages.
00:07:24
Speaker
And it stood out to me because we spent all that time talking about that. and Yes. Yeah. If we hadn't spent so much time talking about it, I might not have made that connection.
00:07:36
Speaker
All right. Let's see. It's two each after three questions each. So my next one for you, and you're going to get a little leeway if you need it, but you might not. What did Pete invent?
00:07:49
Speaker
yeah Moss 385? 365? 385? You get it, Moss 865. Ah, dang it. When I wrote the question, I decided already, whatever the situation, you are not going to get dinged for a number wrong. Well, but here's the deal.
00:08:06
Speaker
What did Pete invent is my question number six. Oh, well, that might... We'll see. Well, let's see. Do we just arrange that one? Because you might have two left.
00:08:19
Speaker
you I have two left. I have two left. Okay. You know what should you? Well, you you're asking first. This might be okay. I think this is going to be okay. If you ask your next question and for me.
00:08:33
Speaker
Okay. What class does Alice teach? Oh, she teaches home economics. Nice. Because that was one of my favorite teachers. Like, the class was fine, but had an amazing teacher, Mrs. Dorothy Ritchie, if you happen to be listening.
00:08:47
Speaker
She was a great teacher. Way to go, Dorothy Ritchie. Yeah, I did email her a couple of years ago. It's been 20 plus years, 25 years since I was in her class. But I did email her, and she was approaching retirement, still at the same school, just to let her know that all these years later, she was she just...
00:09:05
Speaker
That's so nice. Yeah. That's so nice. good Yeah. I never took home economics because didn't want to. i like that. I actively did not want to take that.
00:09:20
Speaker
like it. And they got to take the babies home and all the weird things. And I was like, none of that sounds like anything want to you No interest. No interest. I learned how to sew little bit in that class.
00:09:32
Speaker
All right. My question, ah question four for you. Let's see. Yes. Oh, no. Five. Question five. Question five is when did Chandlin lose the combination to his briefcase?
00:09:47
Speaker
Over a year ago. Exactly. um Okay. Yes. so you But he's carrying it around. He does. Just carries it around. You got four out of five.
00:09:58
Speaker
Okay. m I don't know that that's accurate. Well, maybe not. I think I'm being more kind than you are on yourself. Oh, okay. Well, that's, I don't know.
00:10:11
Speaker
Yeah. All right. Where does Pete take Monica on their first date? Are you going to, you're looking for the name? yeah yeah I'm good with the city or the name of the restaurant. Okay, because I've written the name of the city the restaurant in my notes, but not going to look at those. But he takes her to Rome, to a pizzeria in Rome.
00:10:35
Speaker
That's correct. Very good. Named Canova. Ah. But I don't know if that's how they say it. I like that. You've been to Rome. You're practically Italian. have been. And you know what I did not see? a restaurant named Canova.
00:10:50
Speaker
Well, I was going to save this for later on, but it existed then in real life, and it still exists to this day. It is a functioning restaurant. Well, there you go.
00:11:00
Speaker
That's nice. It's still there. They've updated it a bit, but it's still in the same location that they ah they did that scene. Oh, that's nice. Yeah. That's very nice. Yeah, it's kind of fun. All right. Well, i think we I say we have tied this week at four out of five each.
00:11:17
Speaker
I feel like that's very kind of you, Al. Well, you're very, very welcome. feel, yeah, that that might be a little tainted, but that's okay. Just for giggles, I've got a couple of extra questions, but I've just got to ask you one. of what do you have one? All right, you go first. No, I don't. I was going to say let's practice our fake laughs, but... We could. that with ah We wouldn't do very well.
00:11:45
Speaker
no. no Well, both of mine are bird-related. Well, I've just

Wordplay and Anecdotes

00:11:51
Speaker
given you the answer to one of them. I was going to ask you, what does Frank get arrested for? Oh, yeah, stealing the birds. Stealing birds. And then there was the punctured lung thing.
00:12:01
Speaker
Yeah. I love Frank. I love Frank so much. Yeah. And then it's a little obscure, but Monica calls Pete what kind of bird when they're in his office?
00:12:15
Speaker
She might be meaning it as something else, a shortened version of another kind of insult, but she calls him the name of a bird.
00:12:25
Speaker
No idea. She says, you're a loon.
00:12:30
Speaker
She sure does. And I wasn't sure she intended that as the birds. as birds. means like a crazy person, like a lunatic. That was my assumption. And the only reason I think I even know it's a loon is there's a major league soccer team from Minnesota and they have a big bird on their badge because that's the state bird of Minnesota.
00:12:51
Speaker
Interesting. Okay. And that also the big, okay. I didn't even know what a loon was until we went to Joseph's dad's place in Canada.
00:13:02
Speaker
Right. And then out there, because you hear the loons. There you go. The noise that they make and all of that. But do you know why they call lunatics lunatics? I have no idea.
00:13:15
Speaker
I just learned this not too long ago at work. I didn't look it up to verify if this is true or not, but I feel like the people I work with are very intelligent and wouldn't lie But it's because um in mental hospitals, whenever there's a full moon and then the people there like have a harder time,
00:13:38
Speaker
And that's, and actually the person that told me she was, she used to be a cop that worked nights. And she was like, she said that there's a distinct difference between what typically happens on a night shift and what happens on a night shift whenever the moon is full.
00:13:57
Speaker
Interesting. It is interesting. I will never think of that word the same way again. And and as somebody who worked in an elementary school for for a long time, you can verify that there's definitely a difference.
00:14:13
Speaker
I thought that was a bunch of nonsense when I started teaching. No. It's really not. There is distinct behavior difference. Yes. And I think that it matters. Like the age of the kids matters whenever you're talking about the off behaviors. And then also animals.
00:14:33
Speaker
Animals do a lot. You'll notice like um there's a lot more dead animals on the side of the road. Animals acting strange and all that. Whenever there's a full moon.
00:14:45
Speaker
I am now going to pay much more attention to a full moon. As you should. Lots of fun with a with a full moon. I like it. All right.
00:14:58
Speaker
Well, let's get stuck into this fun episode. We're going to start in Central Park. I noted down that Rachel has tarot cards. I think she and Monica. No, not Rachel. Phoebe. Phoebe. Yeah. I've written two names down wrong already. What was that thing? if Phoebe has. Yeah, because Phoebe moves the box of cigarettes. I have that in my notes. Nice. Phoebe moves the cigarettes to start flipping the tarot cards. Yeah. Yes. and it's she She had them with Monica, right? In Monica's apartment a week or two ago. at feel or Was that a Ouija board? They had tarot cards. yeah
00:15:32
Speaker
No, they had a Ouija board, but then she's also had the tarot cards. She normally has them in her bag. so well I was going to ask you about your your thoughts on hypnosis. and I'll do that as well. but if have you ever which so Let's talk about that and tarot cards. Have you ever had your ah reading?
00:15:52
Speaker
I have not ever had tarot card reading. Had a crystal ball reading once, I think. or it was She was a psychic and it wasn't, like she didn't have cards. And it was real dumb. And it was a real waste of 20 bucks.
00:16:09
Speaker
Yikes. yeah but All very, very like vague and everything. But hypnosis, hypnosis how do we feel about that? Oh, man. Okay. So i did I was reading like hypnosis and is it really like an effective thing that people actually do? Right. And so like out of out of like statistically speaking, 10% of people are extremely vulnerable to hypnosis. And 10% of people, it takes a really long time
00:16:43
Speaker
for them to be hypnotized. But and being hypnotized for things like that, or for, they said the most effective things are weight management, pain management, and then some behavioral things.
00:17:02
Speaker
And it said that like for those are the three most effective ways or behaviors ah hypnosis things. So like behavioral talking about, smoking and, um, things like that.
00:17:18
Speaker
That's so interesting. Yeah. Well, so then I was watching videos. of dismiss Then I was watching videos about how to hypnotize yourself.
00:17:31
Speaker
And you know how like you do like relaxing techniques, you know, like our grounding techniques and things like that. Yes. Those are all like the start of a hypnosis, like,
00:17:47
Speaker
cycle or whatever you want to call it. Right. Isn't that weird? I have no experience of hypnosis, know nothing really about it at all, good or bad. So that's really interesting. um i feel like I feel the urge to look into it just a little bit.
00:18:04
Speaker
Yeah. Well, and it matters. It matters a lot about your mindset, which if you really think about hypnosis and what it is and why, he you know, um,
00:18:17
Speaker
You have to be open to the behavioral change. Like you, the, you know, watch this and, and then, you know, and then do this or whatever. That's not going to happen in the majority of people.
00:18:31
Speaker
That's right. It's just not so like what we see on TV and playing wipe out and all of that, all of that, you know, yeah, that's not gonna really happen.
00:18:43
Speaker
with the reason Sorry, go ahead. No, no, that's all. was going to say, we're talking about hypnosis, of course, because Rachel brings a tape to help Chandler quit smoking.

Character Relationships and Interactions

00:18:53
Speaker
We would be we would be remiss.
00:18:56
Speaker
It's icky and it's oogie, but it's such a funny line. When Chandler walks in smoking and Gunther asks for a cigarette. Oh, gosh, yes. Right? What was it? Dark mother suckling at the smoky teeth. It makes me go, ugh.
00:19:09
Speaker
But yet there's something about his delivery that's so funny. like It is. It is. It is. And you can tell he's like, oh, I don't know. just yeah He misses Sookie and then he's like, nah, you keep it. Yeah.
00:19:25
Speaker
And then I do love that the physical comedy of you know Rachel gives Chandler the tape. He puts it on like a patch on his arm. Nope. It's just not going to happen.
00:19:37
Speaker
Do you remember what Phoebe's ritual for quitting was? I do. So you have to dance dance naked in the field of Heather. Yep. And then dance in the sweat of six young men or six healthy young men or what Chandler's dad would call a Thursday night.
00:19:59
Speaker
That's it. Yeah, it was. i do love Phoebe and her alternative remedies for things. And she just knows she just knows that's that's the remedy. um We're still in Central Park and Ross and Rachel, to me, they seem like they're getting along in the sense that Rachel's like, oh, I didn't want cinnamon.
00:20:18
Speaker
You know, she didn't. There was no venom in anything she said. It seems to me like things have quietened down a little. um Yeah. But maybe that's just one side because Ross just scoops the cinnamon off with his hand.
00:20:31
Speaker
It was so funny. That was so funny. It's so well done. It's like, oh, yep. Yeah, it's just so bad. But then Frank Jr. shows up.
00:20:45
Speaker
Unexpectedly, Frank shows up. And he comes in to introduce the gang to his fiancรฉe. We're going to meet Alice for the first time. Now, what are your I've got my thoughts. you've got out of I think we'll probably align. What are your thoughts on Alice as a character?
00:21:04
Speaker
Gross. Yep. Gross. Like, she's so funny, right? The actress that plays her is so funny. But gross.
00:21:14
Speaker
Gross, gross, gross, gross, gross. No, no, no, no, no. 100%. her scent Yeah. I think ah it's it's it's the kind of behavior that would get you imprisoned in this day and age.
00:21:27
Speaker
Yes. And on the news. Oh, yeah. And everybody will just, no. Yeah, just know. But I agree. It's ah Deborah Jo Rupp.
00:21:39
Speaker
Deborah Jo Rupp, that's maybe her name, plays Alice fantastically. Not her fault that the character's written to be a bit of a predator. She plays the character tremendously well. um and and it's just it's very funny she she really does a great job yes but but there's nothing like i yeah yeah i think again both of us being teachers i think it all kind of plays into the fact that we think this is very icky a fair very especially when he calls her mrs knight
00:22:13
Speaker
you know yeah yeah just yeah just no um they want to have babies right away and frank says because his dad wasn't around but correct me if i'm wrong but when phoebe met frank i think he said his dad had left a couple of years ago right and frank was already let's say 16 17 so his dad's not excusing his dad by any stretch but his dad was around Maybe for a while, I guess. A little while. But I don't know. mean, if I think about, don't know, like George is 12.
00:22:48
Speaker
If Joseph skipped out right now, yep he's not listening to this. so Right. right got know He better not. but yeah be were like George would be very affected for the... Yeah, true. you know Formative years. yeah yeah basic Now that we're saying it out loud, it's the important critical years.
00:23:10
Speaker
It is, right? I mean, I think they all are, but I think that probably... Probably like 12, 13, 14, 15. You know like you're kind of making that switch from
00:23:31
Speaker
that whenever your world starts really getting bigger. Yeah. and like I like the way you phrased that. Yeah, your world starts getting bigger. um Absolutely. um We go over to Chandler's bedroom for just just a second because he's listening. to We find that it's designed you know for a woman in particular to quit smoking, which yeah which will lead us to many funny moments. Do you happen to know whose voice is on the tape?
00:24:00
Speaker
You won't recognize it, but just if you happen to read... um It is Marta Kaufman, the the co-creator. That's so nice. Which I like that. Independent woman.
00:24:11
Speaker
Confident woman. Who doesn't need to smoke. Yes, it's brilliant. We do go over to one of your favorite sets now, the Moondance Diner.
00:24:23
Speaker
I love this scene. I love this. I love this, and love Pete. Yep. I do. I just love it. Okay. Yeah. This scene is so good. I love just Monica and Rachel and Pete's in dialogue.
00:24:39
Speaker
Yes. There's something about it. Monica. And he just is. And that's just the piece of it where he just has a huge crush on her. Right. But he is totally just eavesdropping on that conversation. But Rachel's delivery of that line where she is like, well, you know, at my job, all I meet are eligible straight men. And it's like, like, that was so funny. And so i I don't know her delivery of that line was so funny. And then how he just kind of loops himself into that conversation, you know, and date if you're giving those out. And um it's just so cute.
00:25:19
Speaker
It's so cute. And then, yeah. you know And then he pulls Rachel in. and I don't know. It's an interesting dynamic and go around. But i like I love it. I love that it's such it's really a small scene and the thing that you love is different from the thing that jumped out to me was I love Rachel's delivery and I'm going to butcher the quote but it's something like you know do you really want to see that in the morning the wig on the nightstand and the left boob over the shoulder not a pretty picture in the morning let me tell you and I just I just love that line
00:25:55
Speaker
Yes. Well, okay. And it was so funny to me whenever she says, um are um yeah you just like me because of the blonde hair and the big boobs and I bring you food. Yes. And he's like, well... If that's what it was. i And then he just keeps going with it. Like, that was weird a couple of times. and yeah He's a funny guy. He is! And nice looking. What's wrong here? There's some chemistry there to me. They seem to be kind of flirtatious back and forth a bit.
00:26:29
Speaker
Yes. i I would have liked to have seen more of that because I think they're sweet together. And obviously he's an incredibly wealthy, successful guy, but He doesn't appear to be arrogant certainly at this point. Like he's just, he doesn't. Yeah. He has moments though. He does have moments. We do get to some moments. I feel like he's probably got his own amount of baggage or maybe, i don't know. I don't understand.
00:26:59
Speaker
yeah i just don't. Yeah, I'm not quite sure. But at this moment in time, I like the chemistry between them. um And they've obviously got to know each other a little bit. He comes in, I guess, fairly frequently.
00:27:13
Speaker
Because I think Monica says, we've been over this or something. yeah yeah because absolutely and then they go back to the apartment and her and rachel continue oh yeah right here in my notes richard and julio yeah there you go see um yeah yeah and i wrote down a couple of mug colors i've discovered in my notes but not the one you asked me about so oh dang yeah We end up going up to the boys' apartment. Phoebe is talking to Ross and Joey about Frank getting married. I do love that the way she turns the chairs around to make sure they're facing her. um Okay, did you see Ross almost lose it?
00:27:56
Speaker
No, i didn't. Yes. Oh, it's so funny because it's whenever they go to turn around after she said that you can. And so she stops them from spinning around away. And you can see Ross's face. Like he starts smiling. and And then they turn back around and everything. And then they're both sitting there like this. Yeah.
00:28:20
Speaker
And, but right there in that one little thing, I was like, oh my gosh, he's about to lose it. You just see him almost breaking. I love it. Yes. Yeah. She's, she's not happy. It's just not good home economics.
00:28:35
Speaker
is what this boils down to. Frank and Alice getting married. Yes. It's not good. I have not gone back to verify this, but when I was double-checking the Marta Kaufman thing, I saw a note that says this is... I'm not sure if it's this scene, because it could be right in the background, but maybe later in this episode.
00:28:54
Speaker
But this episode is the first one that has the magna-doodle hanging on the boy's door. Oh, I didn't even notice it. I didn't either. It just, I saw that note online and I thought that's a cool little thing. If that's true, I'm going to go and rewatch the episode and check that. But we know that they play with the the set decoration a lot and a lot of things change.
00:29:16
Speaker
So wouldn't yeah it wouldn't be weird that it that it is. Yeah. um We go across the hall. We're in the girls' apartment. Wait, wait, wait. there's more. Tell me. I'm sorry. But that last that last line that Joey says...
00:29:31
Speaker
cracked me up and it made me actually think of Kate whenever she's all like remember that time and then it like something that just happened and then he tells that story so we're walking down the street and I turn to you and I say hey let's go hang out at you know yeah the place remember and then and then you turn to me and say nah let's just hang at your place that was a nice move and then he calls him Yeah, and kind slaps him on the chest.
00:30:03
Speaker
I do love the fact that in my head, and maybe I'm wrong, but this is kind of early evening. This isn't late at night. And they were going to go visit it a pretty seedy establishment.
00:30:14
Speaker
Yeah. During the day. In the middle of the day. Yeah. As you do, you know. As somebody does, I'm sure. don't know who, but...
00:30:26
Speaker
yeah it's ah it's better Yeah, forgotten about that. Then the kind of, yeah. but we do But we go to the girls' apartment. Monica says to Rachel, right, that Pete just doesn't do anything for her.
00:30:38
Speaker
But Rachel's like, yeah, you should go out with him. um Yes. Monica, I think Monica kind of agrees. Like, there's nothing, you know, why not go out with him, even if he doesn't do anything really for her?
00:30:50
Speaker
Chandler, this is Chandler, the transformation in this episode. he comes in, he's like he's forgotten the combination to his briefcase, but he asked for some chapstick. um I've got funny a funny, ah not relationship, it's not the right one.
00:31:07
Speaker
I've never used chapstick in my life. ka Kate uses it every day.

Personal Insights and Comparisons

00:31:13
Speaker
Every day. yeah And I don't know if it's because she needs it and I don't, or if it's just habit or if it's you I don't know huh yeah really that's that's strange because yeah everybody I feel like can use chapstick Everybody. Yeah, maybe. don't know.
00:31:35
Speaker
Maybe not. Maybe you are just an incredibly hydrated person. Maybe. So you don't have to worry about dry lips. Maybe. Or maybe I've got chronically dry lips, and that but they just feel normal because I've always had them. I don't know.
00:31:50
Speaker
I don't know. could be. It could be. yeah i't see Interesting. But Kate, we often we often talk about like the show, we may have talked about Naked and Afraid. Yeah.
00:32:02
Speaker
Kate, we both enjoyed that show, but Kate said that she could go partially clothed and slightly ticked off. She could go on that show, but she couldn't do Naked and a Afraid. And because chapstick is one of the three things that she needs.
00:32:15
Speaker
um She can't live without it. She needs her chapstick. Wait, okay. so what what do you mean? oh so Are they allowed to take anything with them? They're not. But she she says she she could do the show, but she has three things that she has to take.
00:32:32
Speaker
And one of those things is chapstick. Of all the things you know you have to have, chapstick is top we like talk of her list in the top three. She's very serious about her chapstick usage.
00:32:44
Speaker
Interesting. Yeah, there you go. what would be Okay, what are the other two things? Well, I don't think she'll mind if I just say undergarments. Okay. Yeah. There's a lot of bugs.
00:32:56
Speaker
It's lot creepy crawlies around there. And I'm afraid they're in the jungle and shoes, which I'm with her because just the rage she, and I would probably both get from just standing on sticks all the time.
00:33:08
Speaker
Like you can't yeah move without standing on something sharp and pointy. So yeah. Yeah. Those two things and chapstick are the things she's, they don't have shoes on them. No, no. they they now They do often make them out of like leaves and you know stuff they find.
00:33:24
Speaker
That's one of the yeah things they often make. but know no They literally they have just a like a knapsack and that's just got a couple of survival things in it. I think they do different versions of it. But yeah, no, they have nothing.
00:33:37
Speaker
No shoes. No shoes. That's crazy. Yeah. Shoes is a. Yeah. um But we do enjoy watching that show. A friend of mine was on it recently, actually. Naked in a Freight.
00:33:48
Speaker
um Oh. Yeah. i ah Wow. I have a friend whose husband, that's the show that he wants to be on. Yeah. I'm like, that's crazy.
00:33:59
Speaker
Yeah, I'm all about getting outdoors and doing some interesting things. Yeah. But not that. Not that. See, I do Survivor in a heartbeat. In less than a heartbeat. I would totally do Survivor. But naked and un' afraid just seems, that seems psycho. I think i think you have to be a little ah on the edge mentally.
00:34:22
Speaker
like Yeah. do Like, I couldn't cope. I'm too much of a cupcake. I couldn't cope. i think And I don't like being hot. That's the other thing. so Yeah. i would I would struggle. I would struggle.
00:34:35
Speaker
Yeah. Pete has given Monica as a jokey $20,000 check. um Oh, must back up. Chandler does a comment on Rachel's blouse. It's a stunning. Her stunning blouse. We have to note all of these things that the. the Oh, and there's one that you don't have that I do. oh tell me. I don't remember what it is because my website won't.
00:35:00
Speaker
We'll get to it. because took I wrote it down. I was like, oh, good. That's in my notes. so Okay. Well, let let me know. but yeah Richard gives Monica the $20,000 check, which she naturally assumes it's a joke.
00:35:14
Speaker
But then when she says Pete Becker's name to Chandler, he can't get in his briefcase. I guess the magazine was in a ah side pocket at the magazine. And there's Pete hugging Bill Clinton because hey he made...
00:35:29
Speaker
Moss 865, I think it was. Yes. That's what it says in my notes right here. Back in your notes. hi um Rachel's office uses it.
00:35:41
Speaker
And yes, it suddenly dawns on that this this is not only a real check, but Pete is a wealthy, important, successful guy. um And before we end this scene, again, Chandler starts...
00:35:56
Speaker
putting the chapstick on and then bites on the tissue. um Just very unusual behavior for for Chandler at this moment in time. Yes. yes We go over to the boys' apartment and Joey and Ross, they're trying to talk Frank out of this marriage.
00:36:15
Speaker
um the the The old mathematics is a little off here with ah the ages. Ever times too. If you just double the age. Just double it.
00:36:26
Speaker
You don't think I know that? um But then Frank talks them around. If we take out the super creepy ick factor that we're not overlooking, but we just set that to the side. I do love the way that Frank talks about his bride-to-be.
00:36:42
Speaker
I mean, then we'll bring back in the ick factor of all of this. But it's ah okay yeah, talk to

Comedic Moments and Pranks

00:36:48
Speaker
me. this scene in this scene, whenever they're talking about that and the math part and everything, then Chandler walks through.
00:36:59
Speaker
And he's holding his basketball. Okay. And um he gets to the door and he's like, you know, I'm going to go and play some basketball. And he's like, or I'm going to go to the court and let the really good guys play with my basketball while go, let me play, let me play. So then he opens up the door and the keys are in the door. And he goes, oh, Joey, you threw your key or you left your keys in the door.
00:37:24
Speaker
And so Joey holds his hand up for Ross to throw, I mean, for Chandler to throw him the keys. And he throws them like overhand, like right they kind of do like a rainbow and go straight down. And then he goes, Oh, and then he shuts the door and leaves. And they're both, and they're all like, what on earth? And then they go back into the whole conversation. And I've got the note, and the note about the statues.
00:37:52
Speaker
of the three stooges behind Frank Jr. Jr. Okay, well then I've got a question for you. Well, Joey ends up being the best man and Ross is the ring bearer because they kind of want what Frank has.
00:38:03
Speaker
But then isn't it right after that that Chandler comes out the bathroom and walks to his... Okay, but because because um now whenever they're having that next conversation...
00:38:19
Speaker
Phoebe's there. That's right. Chandler has come back home and has taken a shower. Yes, that makes sense. And so Joey's like noticing all these really weird things about Chandler, right?
00:38:33
Speaker
Because in that little space, there was two. That's right. And this I mentioned to you, I think in our last episode, there was one tiny bit in the scene that I just adore.
00:38:44
Speaker
And it's the way Chandler walks from the bathroom to with the towel on his head and the towel around. And I, you know, if like, if you asked me to walk like a woman instead of the way I normally walk, I would have no idea what to do with my body.
00:39:02
Speaker
But somehow Matthew Perry knows that. He just, I don't know, it's such a simple thing, I guess. Or maybe it's not, he makes it look simple. I just love the way he walks. He changes his walk a little bit.
00:39:15
Speaker
Yes, because he's a confident woman. He is. He's a strong, confident woman. We we like this about Champ. And that is exactly how he walks. Like, as strong, confident woman.
00:39:28
Speaker
Like, I don't know. That's interesting. I just love it. We go into Phoebe's apartment now, and I was just looking at my notes thinking, what did I write? Like, I must have made a big typo. It's mustatastrophe.
00:39:42
Speaker
Uh-huh. Mustatastrophe. That's what she's baiting Alice in with to get her to come over. um And then basically just kind of says, I don't care about that. Please don't marry my brother.
00:39:55
Speaker
Yeah. once to nu about Good old Phoebe. You know, Phoebe is worldly in ah in a lot of ways. um She knows that this this isn't the right move for her brother.
00:40:06
Speaker
um I do love this in Pete's office. I do love looking like old tech that kind of dates the show. And this, I'll just call it early version of Zoom because I don't know really what it was called, this video chat on all these different old tube TVs that are kind of mounted into the wall, I think.
00:40:26
Speaker
yeah Yeah. Yeah, I just like it. I like looking at this old technology that at the time was incredibly fancy. ah Yes, exactly. And then wasn't.
00:40:40
Speaker
yeah But was at for the time. It was indeed. And then what do you think they were talking about when whenever he's like, you know, I want it to fit on the head of a pen. I love it whenever they things fit on the head of a pen.
00:40:55
Speaker
So I'm like, okay, so something very, very tiny. And I wonder what it was. Yeah, because even things that could be tiny now, they couldn't be then. So it's got to have been something pretty. I don't know.
00:41:08
Speaker
I don't know what it could have been.
00:41:12
Speaker
I wonder what he was what he was talking about. Monica comes in with the check. um Pete says basically the check was just to, you know, that was his plan, to get her to come down to um his office. ah To change their their relationship.
00:41:31
Speaker
To go from a chef and a customer and now we're a couple that fights. Yeah. And it did occur to me, because I was like, well, she's not a chef in this current of role. she's She's a waitress. I mean, she's or she may might be a cook.
00:41:44
Speaker
I don't think the Moondance Diner is the kind of place that would necessarily have a a chef. But that tells me that they have had some good conversations. And she's probably, I am a chef. I just don't, there's no no chefing job out there just now. So I'm doing this.
00:41:58
Speaker
So that just tells me that they have had some banter before. oh yeah like they're friends they're friends or ah friendly that's probably they're friendly that's yeah yeah yeah you're right just one meal and then if she doesn't like it you'll give her ten thousand dollars and they'll call it even um i at this point i'm really i'm enjoying pete i like him uh-huh i like him i like him the whole time yeah i mean really now i think about it this is He gets a little sidetracked on some other things in future episodes. Yes. But I do like him.
00:42:34
Speaker
i think He could be incredibly arrogant and think that a chef is beneath him. And he doesn't chase any women. Women should be chasing him. They could have portrayed a millionaire business guy like that, but they don't. um So, yeah, Jon Favreau does a ah great job with it, I think.
00:42:54
Speaker
um One of my favorite scenes coming up is back over Phoebe's apartment and Frank's asleep on the couch under her laundry. It's pretty much the worst day he's ever had because Alice has called everything off.
00:43:07
Speaker
He doesn't understand on. And I feel sad for him, but I'm like, it's so gross and definitely the right thing. But come on. Like, i yeah, I feel sad for I do, because he's probably had a lot of turmoil in his life. well we We know he certainly had some.
00:43:25
Speaker
i mean, stealing birds, punctured lungs. Yeah, dad took off. And it still hurts. Taking deep breaths whenever he's cold outside. The way he crawls on the table.
00:43:37
Speaker
yeah It's hard not to love Frank. I know. He's so sad. He is. He just wants take care of Frank. um This is worse than the punctured lung, the being arrested for stealing birds.
00:43:53
Speaker
um And Phoebe kind of admits, I think at this point, that she's the one who told Alice du to break it off. Like it wasn't really, you know, wasn't Alice's idea. Well,
00:44:05
Speaker
Yeah, there was one sentence in here that I was like, ew. Because he's like, you know, it's just that I was too young. But I don't see how I can be too young whenever I'm older than I was. Yes.
00:44:18
Speaker
Oh. Oh, Frank. So that's scary. is It's a little, little wild. um The rest of the gang are about to meet Pete over at the girls' apartment.
00:44:30
Speaker
He rings the doorbell. And Chandler's... hate saying acting effeminate. That feels um like a weird way to put it. I'm not sure what the how to phrase it. But he's acting... He's traditionally feminine. I don't know how we would describe his giddiness.
00:44:47
Speaker
Yeah. He's acting like one of the girls'. There was a little bit that was cut out of this scene. Okay. Right. At the very beginning, before he shows up, they're all kind of hanging around, you know, and Rachel's doing Monica's makeup. And then the boys are sitting in there and, you know, they're asking like, what would you do if you had a million dollars?
00:45:10
Speaker
And so they ask Ross that he like goes into this thing about buying municipal bonds and then putting the rest in the bank and living off the interest, which you can't do anymore. Just so you know, savings, they don't, they don't, it would not create enough interest to be able to live off of anymore. um But then in they're all like, oh, Joey's like, well, now we've heard from dr Fun. like Yeah, like that's, you know, but they talk about this on more than one occasion.
00:45:47
Speaker
But what what would you do if you had a whole bunch of money? yeah. The lottery tickets. And roth always gives the very logical, responsible answer.
00:45:58
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. i know there's the lottery tickets one yeah Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. and they can and Who hasn't done that? Yes, yes. He comes in and yeah Chandler's acting kind like one of the girls. he's so excited for for Monica.
00:46:17
Speaker
Suggests he gets the lobster. So funny. Yeah. Ask her about pizza. And then as we discussed in bamboozled, flies her to Italy, which I've got some thoughts on.
00:46:31
Speaker
um Again, it's a TV show. We have to suspend reality, but She happened to have her passport with her. um New York to Rome, if you go direct, it's eight and a half hours just flying. Yeah, I was going to say yeah from the East Coast to Rome, it's eight hours. Like it's yeah very long time.
00:46:52
Speaker
Because I did think, well, maybe he has a private jet. Well, that's going to take a lot longer, like the speed of the plane. Right. He also had time to change money because they have cash, you know, to pay for the pizza.
00:47:04
Speaker
So yeah, the lack of passport, the eight and a half hours at least. And that's just the flying time. um Right. Which ends up being more than half a day.
00:47:17
Speaker
Yeah. Just in travel. Yeah. Just in the travel time. Yeah. Um, the restaurant, as you said, I think in bambooz is Canova and it is, yeah, still exists. It's called Canova Piazza del Popolo.
00:47:34
Speaker
It's 20 minutes, a 20 minute walk from the Trevi fountain. I had to look at it on Google maps. Um, The Trevi Fountain. Did I go to the Trevi Fountain? You may have. It's like the famous big fountain in the middle of Rome. Kate went to it when she and her mom went last year.
00:47:51
Speaker
um So there's a good chance you'll have been to Org. if you were Yes, but I did go there there. was a lot of... A lot of construction whenever I was there.
00:48:02
Speaker
So if we had known this before, I would have tried to talk you into taking a 20-minute walk to get your picture outside the place where Monica and Pete had a date. Yeah.
00:48:14
Speaker
Okay. See, now I'm... i'm i've i've You found something. and no i'm Yeah. No, i'm I'm like curious. Oh.
00:48:27
Speaker
oh Well, while you're looking at that, we have have a very quick scene. but You're fine. Very quick scene where the boys apartment, Joey gets up to pee in the middle of the night and he hears Chandler's tape and I think he figures out what's going on. All the pieces get put together.
00:48:43
Speaker
Um, We go over to back to Phoebe's apartment and Frank is kind of watching the TV, leaning on the TV. I wasn't sure what he was watching. It looked like an old classic show of some some description, but I didn't know. And Alice comes in um and you can tell Phoebe's basically giving her a script of what to see.
00:49:07
Speaker
um like phoebe keeps interjecting um did you recognize what frank was watching on the television i think it was gumby okay but i'm not 100 sure i had no idea but i thought you may have an idea um yeah alice alice tries to stay strong but she can't and even if they had no age difference and it wasn't creepy and all of this The way they are, the PDA is is excessive to say the least.
00:49:39
Speaker
Always, but always. And that never changes. No. No no no social social filter, whatever we call it. Which is so weird, right? Especially considering she's Mrs. Knight. So she's been married before. She's been married. She's a teacher. She knows how to act in a professional way. You know first impressions, all these things.
00:50:02
Speaker
Ooh, ooh. Yep. all the way around. yeah We finish up in Chandler's bedroom and Joey has ah edited the tape, shall we say.
00:50:13
Speaker
and ask I think he asked Chandler to make a cheese sandwich, which to me such an odd thing. I don't really like cold cheese, like cold slices of cheese. it's to The texture weird to me.
00:50:25
Speaker
But I don't know when the last time i ever saw somebody just have a cheese sandwich. Joey's a simple guy with simple needs. yeah Yeah, but he does He likes with all the stuff on there. Yeah, and he's a bit of a cook. Like, his Italian heritage, he makes sauce and all sorts of things.
00:50:45
Speaker
He's no stranger in the kitchen. um But he asked Chandler to make him cheese sandwich and then buy him at hundreds of dollars worth of pence. so yes that yeah Yes. Isn't that random? It I can only assume he's in the knee in in the market for some new Levi's or something.
00:51:04
Speaker
um Because that' it's an odd one. ah And I think at that point Chandler kind of wakes up and realizes that maybe he realizes what's going to be. i wasn't sure if he realized...
00:51:17
Speaker
the the whole feminine side of it or if you just heard Joey's thing you know I'm not sure yeah I don't know I don't know but yeah it's may I forgot this was a funny episode like lots and lots of funny scenes yeah it was it was a good one for me same who though would be your Gunther Central Park of the week
00:51:48
Speaker
Okay. So I had a hard time and I'm still having a hard time yeah because I had three. had three I had three. Okay. Oh, okay. i' let Let me hear your three. Let's see.
00:52:03
Speaker
Okay. Chandler, because it's so funny, right? Yep. Joey. Because he's so funny. And then Phoebe, because just love her. And she's all over the place. And, you know, she's trying to be a good sister. And she's she's just so good. i love her. And and I read this week that whenever that Lisa Kudrow recently said in an interview that while they were taping... friends she felt that she was overlooked like kind of ignored i have seen this quite a bit kate even sent it to me this morning i think last couple days i want to like verify this because it it makes me really sad and i hope it's not true but i i'm seeing it all over friends stuff online
00:52:55
Speaker
okay so okay see i didn't read all of it but i saw that shortly before we came to record and i was like that would make me feel so sad yeah it really would be too good i hope it's i say i hope it's not true we'll find out and we're gonna dig into a bit to see if it's an actual like legitimate from something Yeah.
00:53:20
Speaker
We'll see. Well, I definitely, Chandler was is one of my three that I had. Yeah. I love, I'm going to butcher his last name, but it's it's Giovanni Rossi. Ribisi. Ribisi, that's it. The way he acts, the I mean, just the acting.
00:53:37
Speaker
yes brilliant um i like frank as a character the way it's because of what he oh and he's like you feel like he is physically hurting because he is so heartbroken like you believe it yes you believe him yeah it's it's and and i flash forward to when we see frank again and it's just brilliant acting brilliant and then again it he couldn't be one of my Gunther Central parts but I like Pete I like what we saw of Pete in this episode but Chandler's transition from beginning to end I have to go with i audit to that who did you go with in the end
00:54:19
Speaker
I don't know. oh sorry. Yeah, we talked about your three. then my three I jumped in. No, you're good. You're good. I think I'm going to go with Phoebe then.
00:54:29
Speaker
All right. You go with Phoebe. Yeah, Phoebe. Phoebe. Lisa Kudrow could have had a rough week this week with this. this yeah sa guy so good, phoebe well No surprise now, I'm going with Chandler. I just love the transition. um as Has to be for me.
00:54:48
Speaker
um Let's see, how can we score this week? Doing it out of 10 packs of cigarettes feels achy after that. um That's okay. yeah Or hypnosis tapes. We could just take have many hypnosis tapes. I like it.
00:55:06
Speaker
I say Seven. Seven. yeah Yeah, I think seven is good. As funny as I found it, you know, i think there was some other, you know, I don't know. I think it's on par with some other funny ones that we've seen. Like a good, solid episode.
00:55:25
Speaker
Very funny. and Yeah. yeah I feel, ah yeah, probably Matthew Perry kind of carried that. this a whole episode but there is some good stuff and i talked myself into going up seven and a half seven and a half yeah it was very physical comedy though yeah right but between chandler and frank you know there's there's some def mean just the way frank carries himself and crawls on the table and under the laundry there's some some good physical comedy in this one yeah
00:55:57
Speaker
um well let's next week is all the one with the tiny t-shirt frankie says i don't remember that one at all um you i well we won't spoil won't spoil i i remember one scene okay um and it's to do with the t-shirt and that's it um but that's it any final thoughts ross wear it Yes. this a relax yes Frankie shirt? Frankie says relax. Yes. Okay. Okay.
00:56:29
Speaker
All right. and So there you go. i remember the tiny t-shirt. It's all I can remember from this episode off the top of my head. So we're going to uncover this together next week.
00:56:41
Speaker
Sounds great. Awesome. Yes. Any final thoughts? Oh, look at you go. No, but i I did forget how much I enjoyed Pete.
00:56:54
Speaker
Yeah. He just, good guy. Good guy is Pete Becker. So I'm glad this this season of Friends where Pete's coming along. Yeah, me too. Yeah, I think Monica has good taste taste. Except for Julio. yes you know She figured that out quickly. She did. She did she got over that quickly. but okay Any other final thoughts?
00:57:19
Speaker
No. oh Wonderful. That's all I got. it and Me too. So thank you very much to everybody as always for listening to the Purple Door Podcast.
