00:00:05
Speaker
Well, hello and welcome to this week's episode of the Purple Door Podcast, a friend's rewatch pod. I'm one of your hosts, Alistair, alongside Dianne. Dianne, how are you today?
00:00:16
Speaker
I'm awesome, Al. um I'm awesome. Weather is great. Everything is relaxed. Like, it's it's good. Yeah, we're both at the end of a ah week off. so we're but Yeah, I was like, we don't talk about tomorrow. No, no, we just focus on where we both had a relaxing weekend with our families, a week with our families. The weather is gorgeous.
00:00:39
Speaker
We don't worry about tomorrow's problems today. No, we'll pretend that we're not going back. No, not at all. Well, fantastic.

Overview of Friends Episode and Anticipation

00:00:49
Speaker
Well, i I watched this episode just a few hours ago and, ah you know, knew the main plot of it, of course, but again, I'd forgotten how good it was, I think, and and some of the sort of sub-features of it, the bits and pieces.
00:01:06
Speaker
So I'm excited to get stuck into this episode with you. However... Oh, go ahead. No, no, go. Continue.

Bamboozled Quiz: Friends Trivia

00:01:15
Speaker
Just however, we have our bamboozled questions. We had two or three that were the same.
00:01:22
Speaker
so Kate has filtered those forward. Three of the five. so But we are now ready to roll with bamboozled. Let's have a quick look. It is, you are winning, I believe, for a two So i've got some ground to make up.
00:01:40
Speaker
Is it 4-2? Let's see. I was thinking it was You know what? I've written... I could be wrong.
00:01:51
Speaker
i think I think it was it was three I've got 4-2. I've got 4-2. At one place, I had 3-2 written down, but I'd forgotten to add one. So I might have said 3-2 quite possibly at some point. I think...
00:02:05
Speaker
Okay. Either way. I was thinking that after your destroying of me, that I was only one ahead. I think it's to your your comeback starts today after last week's tiny wobble, I am sure. Oh, man. That was that was way more than a tiny wobble. that Right. That was full-blown, fell off the rock, into the water. Disaster. Disaster.
00:02:31
Speaker
Disastable. I like that we had a lot of the same questions. I always think that's funny when we do it. um And again, you're going to steer me in the right direction. Who goes first this week? You do. I do. And you think I'd remember. Even episode.
00:02:45
Speaker
Yes. It's an even episode. do You do the evens, I do the odds. All right, so you are on the ball. Well, I'm going to start you off with a question that Kate didn't watch this episode, but when she came to check the questions, this one made her kind of what are you talking about? But the question is, who lives who lives in Phoebe's ceiling?
00:03:04
Speaker
Oh, it's an old lady. It is. It is. It's the spirit of an old Indian woman. yeah Yes. Yes. Oh, that's exactly what I should have said.
00:03:15
Speaker
Sorry. Well, no, that old lady. That is lady. Yes. You know, bananas, spirit of an old Indian woman, you understand. Right, you get it. and Yeah. yeah All right. So what's in Rachel's hands in the first scene?
00:03:35
Speaker
Oh, this is a good question. Let me...
00:03:43
Speaker
So she comes Yeah. Yeah. she is yeah And it's funny because i love the commentary over the, like the overcommentary because it explained like why everything was the way that it was. So I suppose so why Rachel had these items in her hand. I mean, you know why, but But she has two things in her hand whenever Monica sets off the blender and the food goes everywhere. So if I recall rightly, she's getting, she can't get the coming out of the bathroom?
00:04:20
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, so I'm just going to have to guess. But it's it has... It's not. she No. She doesn't have anything in her hand ah whenever she comes out of the bathroom. But then whenever in the next shot, whenever Monica pushes and she says, you know, we broke up anyway.
00:04:39
Speaker
Yes. She's got two things in her hand. All right. I have no idea. so I'm just going with a mug and a book. Oh, that's so close. Yeah? It's a cup.
00:04:52
Speaker
And a pitcher. like ah And I'm pretty sure it's orange juice, but there's no way to know what kind of juice. but yeah Well, you've touched on this. I'm particularly excited to review this with you because I watched, as always, the streaming HBO version. You watched the DVD version that has additional commentary, which you just touched on. so I'm excited to hear all the the insider scoop that you you will have.
00:05:16
Speaker
for us. But before that, my question too for you is, I'm going to ask you to give the little catchphrase as well. This is the one that I thought we might have similar, but what does Monica say they should call vaccine?
00:05:33
Speaker
Oh, Oh.

Character Details and Plot Discussions

00:05:38
Speaker
And you know You don't need the tagline. That's me being extra. pain free. It's pain free. As she said, no, it's painful. ah And it should be called... it shouldn't be called Waxine. It should be called... to have go... It's in my notes.
00:05:56
Speaker
Okay. that Well, I'm going to give you a small hint. You're at least getting half a point. Okay, great. At least half a point because of what you said.
00:06:08
Speaker
Waxine. It's not pain-free. It's painful. They should call it I can't help but tell you you are remarkably close to saying the word.
00:06:21
Speaker
Dang. Instead of waxing, it's Yeah, I know. It's...
00:06:32
Speaker
Pain-een. yeah. I don't know. You have the point. Instead of waxing, pain-zine. Painzine. Painzine.
00:06:43
Speaker
yeah Yeah. You you said the word painzine, now with a little wax. Yeah, that's it. Yes. You were close enough. You are getting that. Yeah, I got You said painzine. I don't because my next question is pretty unfair. All right, that's okay. I'm okay with it. Just this, or you did not notice this. Okay, let's go for it. Let's see if I did. All right.
00:07:05
Speaker
What was significant about Rachel and Chloe? There is something like in the first two scenes. So there's this scene in the apartment with Rachel and Monica and then there's this scene where Ross is laying in his bed and then um Chloe comes out of the bathroom. There's something very significant about their attire.
00:07:30
Speaker
I'm going to assume, and I don't remember this, but just the context, both wearing a dressing gown slash bathrobe and a towel on their head. Close.
00:07:41
Speaker
Close. So like, I'll give you a half point for that. Oh, sorry. You cut out. You said, what was that? What was it? I would give you a half a point for sure. Okay. We'll go with that. Do you want to hear what it was? Yeah. And I've just remembered that Rachel didn't have a towel on her head because she was actively drying her hair.
00:07:59
Speaker
Rachel did have a a towel on her head. Oh, did she? Okay. But tell me what's the, what's the actual answer? Yeah. and There's a reason, but anyway, okay. So, Chloe is wearing, which I thought was so weird, but she has a white towel around her and a pink towel on her head.
00:08:19
Speaker
Right. And Rachel's wearing a pink robe. with a white towel on her head. So they're like flip-flopped. And I thought that was so interesting. There's no reason why that specifically, but I thought that was so interesting.
00:08:36
Speaker
I choose to believe that there's no accidents and that these things are like yin and yang. Because why would girls have a pink towel? That's a very good point. That seems like an unusual choice.
00:08:48
Speaker
It does, it does. so then I'm like, is it Rachel's towel? Is it, but yeah, I mean, there's there's a reason. Like she's the anti-Rachel.
00:09:00
Speaker
Yes. I don't know. I like that. I love that kind of stuff. You're looking for hidden meanings. Yeah. All right, let's see if you can go three for three here.
00:09:11
Speaker
One, two, three. Where had Ross and Jasmine previously met? Oh, at Phoebe's birthday party. And you are three for three. Yes.
00:09:21
Speaker
Well, sort of. I only got a half point for that other one. Well, all right, we'll go with a half. So we'll go with your two and a half out of three. You're still demolishing me at this point. One, one, two, three. Got it.
00:09:33
Speaker
We're tied. All right. This question. Okay, so who did Phoebe need to have someone cover his massage? Because it was... It was 9.15 and it was at 9 and she's not there. This is one of those ones where I didn't quite hear it and I thought I should have gone back because that seems like a Willison question.
00:09:55
Speaker
Yeah, it is. And I didn't. I swear it sounds something like Eccleman that I don't recall. oo No. No. no No, it doesn't.
00:10:06
Speaker
Rehack. No, I was completely wrong. Mr. Rehack. ah All right. i should I should have trusted my gut and gone back and had a look.
00:10:17
Speaker
um This question I was quite proud of because I think it's a fun question. Oh, good. I love fun questions. When we we we know that certain cast members get stuck in Monica's bedroom, when they first to go to listen through the door, can you give me the order of the characters from highest to lowest? Okay.
00:10:44
Speaker
Somebody is standing on something and then somebody is crouching and then there's two in between.
00:10:51
Speaker
Okay, Monica is crouching.
00:11:00
Speaker
Chandler's standing on something and then Joey and then Phoebe.
00:11:10
Speaker
It's a tough one. it is Okay. Is it Chandler and then Joey and then Phoebe and then Monica? It is not. Monica is actually at the top. She's standing on a chair listening. oh Then Joey, Chandler, and Phoebe is the one crouching down on the bottom. Wow. i was yeah It's one of those things. If you just get one off, it throws everything off.
00:11:39
Speaker
But then that is okay. All right. What do you have for me? Monica was the last one to come over to the door, wasn't she? yeah Well, yeah. She might be thinking, because they do this a couple of different times. They do. They do. wonder if I'm seeing the wrong one.
00:11:55
Speaker
Yeah. But that's okay. That's You've still got to lead here. That is okay. All right. What does Joey decide he needs to get?
00:12:08
Speaker
I love this line and it's a new walk. Yeah. Because it sounds ridiculous, but I think he also has a point where there are people who command a presence in a room.
00:12:20
Speaker
Right. There's something to that. Like he's not just making up nonsense. It is. But then Chandler's line, whenever he's like, are you saying these words right Yeah, it's so funny, but it's rooted in something that made me kind go, huh, he's not right. As does all of Joey's random things.
00:12:44
Speaker
What is going on in his brain is is an interesting voice. It is. It is. I think you if you get this, you will win because it's two and a half to one and a half. We're were we're on the struggle bus. ah Or do I have two and a half as well? I'm not sure.
00:13:01
Speaker
Yeah, now you have two and a half. Okay, two and a half. This one I'm going to divide. You can get half a point for this one. Okay. if you If you give me this sort of general answer and then there's a specific answer.
00:13:14
Speaker
What does Rachel hit Ross multiple times with when they're arguing? Is it newspaper? It is. That's half a point. You do see the name quite prominently several times.
00:13:27
Speaker
and Is it the New York Post? You know you're getting? It's the New York Times. Yes. Okay. Yes. All right. Man, that was just a guess. But New York Times and New York Post or Washington Post, they've they've been in this a lot. Yes. hello And I would have accepted newspaper, but I thought, you know, it's it even if you guess, you had a chance and you got it.
00:13:52
Speaker
All right. I need this All right, what's the name of the two things that Monica has bought from infomercials? Okay, is Wexine one?
00:14:04
Speaker
Yes. Okay, Wexine and the, oh, tell me it is a Wonder Mop. It is a Wonder Mop! All right. I knew was a mop, but couldn't remember.
00:14:16
Speaker
um couldn't remember what if that was the name not excellent all right well we it was a tie this week two to what three and a half each two now three and three and a half each all right i like it i like all right well you still have a slender lead and we have i don't know seven or eight left this season so we will see how it goes um Well, let's get stuck into this episode because I wanted to ask you on the DVD

Recap of Previous Episode Events

00:14:45
Speaker
version. This was one of only two times I can think where a character has kind of done an introduction because it's Joey's voice and he says previously on Friends.
00:14:58
Speaker
um The only other time I think is in this end is in this season. Maybe next season. Yeah, where they go because it's it's the next season. But also Phoebe does it because remember at the beginning of the first season, she's like last ah season on Friends. Yes, that's right. Or maybe was at the end of season one to season two.
00:15:23
Speaker
But yeah, and then there's going to be one at the beach house. Yes, there's the beach house where Joey's actually lying on the sand. But I thought this was interesting to have Joey's voice with the previously on friends.
00:15:35
Speaker
um So they show Ross and Rachel fighting and then Mark coming over, Ross and Chloe kissing, which we saw at the end of last week's episode. And then it says on the screen the next morning. And it's just something I like about this wrinkle on a on the the usual sort of introduction.
00:15:53
Speaker
um tell you know I think highlighting the importance of what happened last week. um So again, please i mean interrupt as if I'm talking about something and there's a really good ah commentary, especially.
00:16:09
Speaker
um So the girl's apartment.

Memorable Scenes and Character Interactions

00:16:12
Speaker
Monica's making a smoothie. I was going to ask you what her shirt said. Girls. Girls, I thought you wouldn't have noticed. I pulled that question away. Yeah.
00:16:23
Speaker
And then, okay yeah yeah, talk to me. And she's wearing a hat on backwards. Yes. And Rachel comes out of the bathroom and she's wearing the towel on her head. And that was on purpose because whenever they do this scene and all the banana and everything flies out of the thing,
00:16:44
Speaker
They didn't want the girls' makeup and hair to get messed up. Because if they were going to have to do it multiple times, they didn't want it to have to redo it every time. I love that kind of That's Monica has that hat Monica's got that hat on and Rachel's got the towel And this, ah and this it's so i love that stuff. And I know that this truly was a coincidence because it's not even really accurate. But there's something about Monica in a sweatshirt and the cat backwards that looks like Chandler. It's like Chandler. Right. It's not foreshadowing.
00:17:20
Speaker
It does look like her though. Or look like him rather. Are you a fan of the smoothie? Do you enjoy a smoothie? No. No, no i' very few and far between. Like I'm telling you, i have to get myself pumped up and everything. The texture of it, I just, I can't.
00:17:42
Speaker
I just can't. It makes me gag. The thought of it right now makes me want to just vomit. Right. Just no, all right. No smoothies. i now over okay just no alright no strings I mean, it's the kind thing I would enjoy a ah fruit smoothie and I won't go into like the gross details, I suppose, because it might send you over the edge.
00:18:04
Speaker
um ah yeah Yeah, like a good fruit smoothie I'm on board with. The ones that are stuffed with kale and lots of greens, I get while they why they're really good for you. Like good for you and your superfoods.
00:18:17
Speaker
I would rather eat some asparagus and vegetables than a vegetable smoothie. Yeah. So, yeah, it' ah it just, it takes ah takes a lot. It takes a lot for me to enjoy a vegetable smoothie. Like the fruit ones, I don't do often because they're expensive and, you know, it takes a bit of time to make them.
00:18:39
Speaker
But, yeah, pretty funny that she forgot to put the lid on and the fruit just shoots everywhere. because Because Rachel has told Monica that...
00:18:51
Speaker
Yeah, they broke it up. We broke up instead. Yeah. i Because she's thinking, you know, that they they didn't make it to dinner and, oh, nice. Yeah, we broke up instead. And then she hits it like, oh, my God.
00:19:05
Speaker
Now, we're not going to delve into this area too much, but it's just something I find oogie. We both have siblings. we Yes! Okay, so you already know. Right, there's just... happens once in a while to Monica and... We talk about this. Yeah, that's right. We have. It's weird. It's weird, and there's just little things like her, whether she says, woohoo, or...
00:19:28
Speaker
lucky don't know something nice nice yeah no no no no that's that's weird um so rachel tells monica they've broken it up and that smoothie hits the ceiling um and we go back there is ceiling there oh of course there's not of course there's no yeah yeah we'll talk more in a minute whenever we get to the part where she's cleaning the soup and went oh i may I can't wait. know, it's so fun.

Show Management and Future Episodes

00:20:01
Speaker
I think what we need to do, I'm just throwing this thought out there. and We've talked about this. I generally kind of go scene to scene and then you interject with all the wonderful stuff. When there's a director's cut or commentary and things like that, you need to run the show because you're going to have so many interesting things.
00:20:16
Speaker
Yeah. I'm excited to hear. But of course there's not- You're getting tired of being interrupted. i apologize No, no, I'm not, not in the slightest. I want to hear everything you have to say, but of course there's no ceiling because it's just hanging lights.
00:20:31
Speaker
the Yeah. Um, we go over to Ross's apartment, um, and it looks to me like ross thinks he's alone because he kind of i can't remember quite what he does but something he just looks confused and then he's like oh and then he puts the blanket back over his head and but yeah got a headache and then here comes chloe bursting out the bathroom um good morning like like it's a perfectly normal day which
00:21:04
Speaker
I feel like it probably is for her. I was going to say, for her, it sounds like this might be a fairly normal occurrence. She's discussed her loose morals in the last episode, so I'm sure that this is a fairly standard thing. Yeah. And when I say loose morals, just judging by the fact that she really said it doesn't matter if you're married, girlfriend, she doesn't care. Yeah.
00:21:29
Speaker
Yeah. um And it kind of descends into Ross trying to get her out. Well, no, he doesn't. He listens to the message from Rachel. Then he hears the message. And then that's when it's like, get out, get out, get out. Yes.
00:21:44
Speaker
And she's just chilling, talking about a puppy. Yeah, what puppy? She's like a big one, small one. Yeah. She's in no rush at all, even though she knows that Ross is getting back with his girlfriend. She's very happy for him.
00:21:59
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. I just, I, I had a conversation with ah Haley Phillips. Good old Haley Phillips. We were talking about just how some people just can live and not stress about anything. And like, they just kind of, and it's, I don't know. And I'm like,
00:22:23
Speaker
it What it must be like to be like a Chloe and just, yeah, just living life, being she's happy. she's she She probably has very low blood pressure and will live a long life. but Exactly. like how How do you do that? I'm envious. Yeah. i mean I haven't found that the the secret sauce to that yet. I know people do it.
00:22:50
Speaker
um I've read lots of things about like everything, like the way you react to anything is just a complete choice. You know, your car breaks down.
00:23:00
Speaker
Yeah, that might be terrible. But how you react, nobody else in the world can control how you react. So you need to make the decision about what's best for you. And I kind of get that in theory.
00:23:11
Speaker
But like our garage door opener broke on... I saw a video of it smoking everywhere. that thing was... ah I thought it was going to be on... Yeah, well, it made a horrible noise and then made a very loud bang and smoke started coming out of it. So I unplugged it quickly and stayed out there a little while to make sure the house didn't burn down, which thankfully did not. good idea. Good idea. But I had to make a choice in that moment. of I can let this melt down or...
00:23:40
Speaker
Buying a new unit is $200, which is a lot of money, but it's a catastrophe. catastrophe And YouTube is my friend. And we're going to see what happens when I order one this week.
00:23:56
Speaker
There you go. And that's ah that's all we can do. That's all I can do. um See, I don't feel like Chloe. Yeah. I don't feel like she's got a garage door opener that she's got to worry about.
00:24:09
Speaker
I assume if she's living in Manhattan and works at the coffee place, probably doesn't have a place to store a car. Yeah. Yeah. Like, no, man. And then ah like some breaks or whatever. e Yeah. We'll just call somebody and and they'll do tells what it says She's an interesting character is Chloe. She is. But she wants a puppy.
00:24:34
Speaker
She wants a puppy. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, can you hear me all right? No. There's like a high-pitched noise in my left ear. Oh, no. We don't want that. Wilson is checking her headphones.
00:24:50
Speaker
um yeah Yeah, there you go. Can you hear me? I can, but can I pause? I'm going to get some different head I will pause it on this end, and we will be right back. There we go. And we are back. Wilson has reset her headphones, and there's not an annoying hype. It's ringing in her ear, which is wonderful. and I don't feel like I would react very well or Chloe like if I had to leave 30 minutes at all. You would have a Ross style crash out, I think. i would I think I'd have a good Chandler one. i good Chandler. I love it.
00:25:24
Speaker
Well, Ross finds Chloe's shoe behind the cushion. um Which are some really pretty color of blue. i just, that was, I wish I would have asked you that. What color are chloe's shoes I would have had zero idea. It was so pretty.
00:25:40
Speaker
love that shade. It's just bright and pretty. And an interesting choice because she had all black on, didn't she? I don't know. I love some good colored popping shoes. i do I've got one for, you know, you know, lingering around gender stereotypes, but I think it's really awesome that I couldn't have told you what kind of shoe it was, let alone the color. And that's something people would have noticed too. Like, ah, a nice color of this shoe. Yeah. yeah That's very funny. Yeah. I mean, you kind of find just the one shoe because she's got one, I guess there was one behind the cushion.
00:26:17
Speaker
Um, And then she tries to hug him goodbye, and that's when he opens the door to to let her leave. And Rachel is standing. is Is she standing at the door at this point? She's standing right there, and he just kind of pushes fully behind the door. That was so just awkward. it It made my tummy go, ooh.
00:26:42
Speaker
Yeah, and then the fact, and I get it's television, and they know where the actors actors and actresses are standing. But very bold of Chloe to stick a thumbs up because she how did she know Rachel wasn't necessarily facing the door or at least able to see the door?
00:26:58
Speaker
Right. What were you thinking, Chloe? Yeah. i think She's not. She's just chilling. She's happy for her buddy. like i Yeah, she's not. Carry on.
00:27:11
Speaker
we we we This is where you're tied to shine about the ceiling because we cut over to the girls' apartment and Monica is mopping the ceiling that doesn't exist. Talk to me. Well, so she is actually mopping something. They put a beam up there for her to mop.
00:27:28
Speaker
Because there's not any ceiling up there. Ah, right. So they put a beam across so that she would have resistance. You know, she's not just miming. Right.
00:27:42
Speaker
and um And I thought that was so interesting. But yeah, the spirit of an old Indian woman. in my Yes. like That's, yeah, it would be, especially with your arms sort of stretched out. I think now that I'm thinking, it might have been obvious if she was just waving it in the air.
00:28:02
Speaker
Yeah. Like, yeah, you want to see her having a bit of pressure on something. But but it made me laugh. Phoebe does not come in empty-handed. Right. because they They said that, you know, they put the stuff on the girl's head heads to prevent food from falling back down and getting in their hair.
00:28:21
Speaker
But then whenever they film this scene, they put a ah beam across so that Monica had something up there because there's nothing up there except for the lights.
00:28:33
Speaker
So interesting. I love this. cool I love this. this The behind to the scenes stuff is of almost any sitcom. but Of course, Friends in particular, i love.
00:28:44
Speaker
I love one of these little tricks of the trade. um Yeah. But yeah, Phoebe's not empty handed. She brings in a box of something Monica bought off television. It's Waxine.
00:28:55
Speaker
um it comes from the rainforest. They have the best stuff there. I love that line of Phoebe's. And the Waxine girls, we find out, it doesn't appear to hurt them, but they're going to have a different experience. We'll get into that.
00:29:12
Speaker
um I wonder if this storyline was just concocted as a way of getting everyone eventually, or four of the six, into the bedroom.
00:29:22
Speaker
I think so. Yeah. um So they talked about they talked about ah Marta Kaufman and then the other guy.
00:29:35
Speaker
the of Anyway, the two writers. David c Crane. david crane no Yes. Yeah, okay. I was thinking David. But they were talking about... like Marta Kaufman was talking about how much they had grown as writers by this point. And she said that like the two of them together make one person.
00:29:55
Speaker
And so David is very like detail oriented to make sure that everything lines up and and he pulls in stuff from the past. So like the wonder mop, she happened to be using the wonder mop and they're talking about the infomercials and, you know, he pulls in those things, but then she says, she's kind of like the body and where she's the big picture and all of that. And so together they worked together. And then she started talking about how much, and and this was season three, you know, that they they're they're doing the commentary because they do a commentary for each season.
00:30:35
Speaker
Right. hi um And she was talking about how much they had both grown as writers by this point and by the end of the series. And it just that, but at this, at that point, they were just really going, you know, and this finds a rhythm so does a good is a good way of of all the things coming together, um of like a culmination.
00:31:07
Speaker
so I don't know. I thought that was interesting because that's the part that I find just amazing, right, is the writing. Because right you have to find somebody like that.
00:31:22
Speaker
Y'all are on the same wavelength, but not so much on the same wavelength that it's only makes sense to y'all. You know, it's incredible that they could build this world and this, you know, and and have so many things that tie together. don't know. Anyway. zony Yeah, you and both. Both find that.
00:31:47
Speaker
And this isn't a link. ness It was not a link at all, but it just reminds me of a very sweet moment. So one of the writers is David Crane, and the name is a coincidence, but this is, I don't think, a spoiler.
00:32:00
Speaker
It's been 20 years. But at the end of Frasier, Niles and Daphne get together, spoiler, and they end up, they they have a son. um couple of episodes before the very end.
00:32:15
Speaker
And, you know Fraser Niles' last name is Crane. And they name the son David in honor of the writer on that show, who was David Angel, who tragically died in one of the Twin Tower planes.
00:32:28
Speaker
So the son's name is David Crane, who just coincidentally is also the writer of this of this episode and of many Friends episodes. It reminds me, when I see the name David Crane, reminds me of that lovely tribute they played to David Angel in Frasier.
00:32:47
Speaker
So his legacy would live on um through the show. um but Yeah, the writing is something interesting. I think you brought up something that I was just... I drove back from Kansas yesterday. I was moving my doctor back up there. And I was listening to... We'll give him a shout-out. It's a podcast called Park Pals. And it's a similar podcast to ours, but it's about Parks and Rec.
00:33:12
Speaker
um And I was listening to one of the episodes. They've interviewed several people involved in the show. And I don't want to get his name wrong, but it's... oh It's the guy who plays one of the council members. Anyway, have you ever watched Parks and Rec?
00:33:28
Speaker
I have not. Okay. Joseph is very disappointed in me. I adore that show. It's tremendous. um I can't believe the names escaped with the council members at the end. Anyway, he has made his career playing...
00:33:45
Speaker
sort of big parts in shows because he was talking about the fact that the the higher actors and actresses you don't just want like oh Wilson are you there can you hear me yes you're back well it glitched for just a split second can you hear me all right Yeah, I don't know what that is about.
00:34:06
Speaker
You're back in crystal clear. um If you have to have five actors in a scene, you don't want the five best actors necessarily. You want the people who can play the best lead and then the best the best sort of um What's the word I'm looking for? They can play the best sort secondary role.
00:34:25
Speaker
Supporting actors, that's the one. you know Because being the best supporting actors is a very different skill set than being the best actor, the best main actor on the stage.
00:34:37
Speaker
And you want to find that balance. Interesting. So he has made a career of being a very good secondary character. Because he's he doesn't overshadow, he doesn't try to take the spotlight.
00:34:51
Speaker
And I wonder if it's the same in the writer's room. Like you were just alluding to, you have to balance you know the ideas and not everyone's ideas are going to be used and things like that. I've gone off on attention, it just reminded me though. Yeah, that's interesting. Yeah.
00:35:10
Speaker
Um, I've completely, let's see, where are we? I have lost track. i think we're back. We're in the boys' apartment. I was going to say, we're going into the boys' apartment. That is just a train wreck of terrible advice. It is a train wreck from start to finish. Um, we were both going to ask each other about the trail.
00:35:30
Speaker
yes but yes, because Ross tells Joey and Chandler that he spent the night with Chloe. Um, And they're freaking out because they thought that he had gone to make up with Rachel. Yes. she yeah they can't quite believe it. Because they were busy off dancing together.
00:35:50
Speaker
Having thought that one or both of them may be going home with Chloe at some point in the previous episode. So it's kind of funny that it ends up being Ross who makes this massive mistake.
00:36:02
Speaker
um But yeah, Joey says, have you thought about the trail? You've always got to think about the trail. This is his mantra. Okay, but before that, before that, they're explaining to him because Ross is freaking out because he's like, how is she going to forgive me whenever she finds out and everything? And then they're both like, why are you even telling her? That's what deathbeds are for.
00:36:26
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, no. i mean, it's just terrible, Terrible advice. It's not like he did something small I guess there could be a great, and not not with this situation, let me make that clear. But if he had done something small, like a a white lie, maybe. But no, this is something that, this is not a white lie. No, this is not. And the thing is, too, I mean...
00:36:55
Speaker
That's what his gut is telling him he should do. Yes, he should just have followed his gut. Absolutely. I don't know that the outcome would have been any different, but it sure did add a lot of layers of yeah it's terrible this you know yeah um but and the thing is like if it's something that's going to be eating at you and you're going to be feeling guilty about you might as well just own up to it and because otherwise the guilt's going to eat you exactly and it's going to come out at some point exactly joey and chandler already know
00:37:34
Speaker
yes it's going to get to you just need to to just just deal with it right just pull the waxing yes exactly but a what a metaphor that is i love it i love it i hadn't thought about the representation of the waxing yes just yeah chandler's very proud of himself because he managed to work out a trail, the the the real trail takes slight break home.
00:38:05
Speaker
not me. He was close. He was close, but there was one misstep in the trail, which we will get to. um We go to Monica's bedroom and this is where they are, you know, just pull the, was it the easy, easy tab or whatever it's called. Like it makes it sound like it's like just going to be, and you know, a task that does not have any pain. Yeah. It doesn't quite work out that way. Pull the easy grab tab and pull it up in one quick pain-free motion. That's right. Not pain-free at all. At all. Yeah. No.
00:38:42
Speaker
it's ah It's not an experience I can honestly say I've ever had, um but it looks like it looks painful. It looks like something that would that would not be pain-free as the vaccine models seem to portray. um The ladies in the satin 90s. That's right.
00:39:07
Speaker
bounce over to the copy place i kind of i we we um we'll get to isaac in a minute i think um oh wait or do we deal with isaac in this oh what have forgotten talk to me okay but wait oh so it's just it's hilarious to me because the one line where she's like their nerves must be deadened from being so stupid yeah that was Oh, gosh. That was a hysterical line by Monica. I thought it was just... Because she's so mad. Yeah. So mad, because what a waste of money.
00:39:44
Speaker
Now, you know, I tried to note down a question or two to ask you each episode. Now, I didn't think about this, but... It's not done so much anymore, but what have you bought from the TV? And I think we may have discussed this previously.
00:39:58
Speaker
Maybe I've just thought about it. Did we? we Yeah, I think so. Because we bought one of the videos whenever I was in college from, it Jerry Springer or it's something? And then like we had Abs of Steel.
00:40:16
Speaker
Right. But um yeah, but other than that, I can't think of anything. Yeah. I like the made for TV or whatever, that area of Walmart. I like that area. Yeah. Just because there's some random crap in there. Yeah. Walgreens has a little section that I enjoy of that stuff.
00:40:40
Speaker
Don't know if I've ever bought anything. There used to be a whole store at the mall. Really? That was like, what what? Oh, as seen on TV.
00:40:51
Speaker
That was the name of it. was as seen on TV. And I don't know. See, I feel like if infomercials were a thing now, I would be more inclined because I'm a little more interested in things like a really good mob.
00:41:09
Speaker
he You know? I'm at that station of life too where a good mob can make or break my day. Yeah. yeah Yeah. Yeah. So, I don't know. But, yeah.
00:41:20
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, there's ah there's a good, it's probably on Netflix, I watched it several years ago, kind of behind the scenes of the infomercial world.
00:41:30
Speaker
And they talked about Billy Mays, who was the famous guy who died. And then Anthony, Anthony something, English guy, who kind of took over. Mm-hmm.
00:41:42
Speaker
And just that whole world, like how it works, how or worked, I suppose. Maybe, I'm sure it's still going on. But yeah, OxiClean and all these things that kind of make them new. And just the behind the scenes, the cutthroat business it can be.
00:41:58
Speaker
It's an interesting watch. Yeah, Anthony Sullivan, that's his name. um Okay.
00:42:05
Speaker
I couldn't even tell you how many years ago this was. But I know that both we had both the kids, so it's less than 12. But um we were at a gas station and it was like over in Justin.
00:42:18
Speaker
Right. So kind of it's still kind of country, not a lot. But we were at a gas station filling up and this guy comes over with a bottle. A green bottle. Yes.
00:42:30
Speaker
Put a little bit on our car and then wiped it. And I think about that now and I'm like, God, that was ballsy. Because, and I think about the people like with the vacuums.
00:42:43
Speaker
Yep. And they would like throw some stuff like in the door. And you know, oh, I can, let me show you how great this vacuum works. Right. And you know, very intrusive, very rude.
00:42:56
Speaker
Yeah, too pushy. But yeah, but I think Joseph Oh, huh but Joseph ended up buying a bottle of the stuff because it was crazy.
00:43:07
Speaker
Like you right you didn't need water and it cleaned it all off. I'm sure it ate through all the pain. Right. But but That was crazy.
00:43:18
Speaker
And then i told you about the meat guy. Yes. The sketchy meat guy. That was terrible, but had the best meat. um Yeah. So I don't know.
00:43:31
Speaker
Things are weird. Sales, like that kind of sales, I couldn't ever do. i amm I'm not pushy enough like that, I guess. Yeah. No, it feels very intrusive.
00:43:43
Speaker
Yes. It's weird. If somebody's coming to me, like if I was, I don't know, at a booth, And they're coming up to the booth. I think I'm, um you know, could be reasonable at sales, but no, I'm not going cold calling and knocking on doors. and no Yeah.
00:43:59
Speaker
No. See, I don't even know that I could do a booth. Um, I tried to do a booth once with the, the heat up nail things. I can't think of what they're called now. Right. But like you, you put the, you heat it up and then it like sticks on your nail and everything. Oh, jam berry.
00:44:19
Speaker
Yeah, I tried to do that. I did a thing in and it was stupid. I was like, this is such a waste of time because they're just looking for free samples. Like, I know you.
00:44:32
Speaker
Yeah, you get it. Yeah, I get it. And I'm like, oh, this is terrible. Or like the kiosks in the mall. Yeah. Don't be eye contact. That's right. Just look straight ahead and keep walking.
00:44:47
Speaker
um Speaking of kiosks in the mall, sort of, my next question i was going to ask you is we're in the coffee place and Ross talks to Chloe. She hasn't told anyone, but she tells Isaac everything.
00:44:59
Speaker
Of course. no so But she took his watch, and apparently this is her thing. She steals watches the gentleman she spent the night with. it got me and How many watches do you own?
00:45:13
Speaker
do they have to work? You know what? You could give me two categories. One of functioning watches, and then ones that are only right twice a day. Okay, so I have one, i have my Fitbit watch that I wear all the time. Like, that's it. Okay. But then and I've also got a couple of ones that their watch battery has died.
00:45:39
Speaker
like i have a really cool silver harry potter deathly hollows watch of course you do yes one but the the watch died and i never got another battery because i have no idea how to change it so it just is there It's just there.
00:45:56
Speaker
you' At some point some point, you'll get that. Because watches are not what they used to be in the sense of everyone can just look at the time on their phone and all of that. Yeah. um Right. So but she she steals watches from men she has spent the evening with, it appears.
00:46:12
Speaker
Okay. Okay. i this this I had many thoughts about this because i was, she said, is it about you taking my watch? And she's like, I'm sorry I do that.
00:46:26
Speaker
You know, and, or she said, is this about me taking your watch? So I wonder if it's watches that she takes or she doesn't just take something. Oh, that's a good point. Because, because, and then it made me start thinking of like, and ah this is a terrible analogy, but whatever. um but Serial killers, like they always talk about serial killers have like a trophy or something that they take yeah to keep for them. and so i figured it was along those kinds of lines that kind of makes sense yeah yeah like her trophy yeah um her conquest or whatever yeah it just occurred to me that ross's his watch has come up before in the one where nobody's ready the dinosaur tail has stopped moving oh yeah yeah wonder if it's that watch i wonder Well, because she calls him dinosaur guy all this time. Indeed. Indeed. And, you know, she obviously had, like, a crush on him. Yeah. You know what I mean? Because she she gets excited to, like, introduce him to her friends, Joey Chandler. Yep. And, you know, she's got a ah thing But yeah, I wonder, I bet it was Outwatch. In my head, she's still the dinosaur. That would be the trophy.
00:47:49
Speaker
Yes, for the dinosaur guy, a dinosaur watch. I love it. There you go. um Does Ross talk to Isaac in this scene? Yeah. Yeah, okay. love Isaac so much.
00:48:03
Speaker
I know. It's the hair, it's the clothes. Why is the glass dirty though? Can we discuss that? Filthy. Disgusting. So it reminded me, and i am i I've watched all of the episodes, but only once, so I'm not well versed in it.
00:48:20
Speaker
I'm convinced it's the same set as the dry cleaner in Seinfeld, but it might just be because they're both so filthy. I just remember thinking that was to me really, really filthy.
00:48:32
Speaker
um But maybe not, maybe not, of course. But yeah, I noticed that too. That place is is pretty disgusting. um Yeah, come to think of it, Ross works in the museum. Well, guess a museum might not have photocopier to blow things up.
00:48:51
Speaker
um he's not at He's not at the university. Don't think he's at the university yet. um Not yet. But Isaac, I think he's just like this 70s guy and he knows who he is and probably gets like... We're the same, man. We're the same, but we are. We're not the best. I would have been pretty happy with more Isaac throughout this this series of Friends.
00:49:20
Speaker
Oh, yeah. Just just just something about him is hilarious. Yeah. But Isaac has told his sister, he runs, Ross runs over to the massage parlor place, whatever we call it.
00:49:34
Speaker
And she get she's funny. You did a bad thing, a bad, bad thing. Okay. Do you recognize her? Yes. Did she play another role in Friends?
00:49:46
Speaker
She did. And the very first in the pilot. Okay. Let me think back to, so was she a waitress? Uh-huh. Okay. Yes. i thought I knew her face.
00:50:01
Speaker
And Marta Kaufman. Oh yeah. Okay. So Marta Kaufman really, really likes Jasmine or the, the actress. I can't remember her name right now, but um I feel like it's probably in my notes up here. Maybe not.
00:50:15
Speaker
ah But she was, um she really liked her. She thought she was so cute and she thought her voice was awesome. And so that's they pulled her back for this role because she just likes her so much.
00:50:32
Speaker
I'm with her. I think she's a great character. Yes, and her voice is so very distinct. Yes. But here's something interesting about the actress that plays Chloe. They picked her very intentionally as well because... um And Marta Kaufman talked about her is that they wanted somebody who was attractive and pretty. This lady's name is Angela Featherstone. Right. But it, she, they wanted her to be attractive and like cute, but they did not want her to be like a model. They did not want her to be like, so they wanted her to be like a real person.
00:51:15
Speaker
Right. And that's what they liked about Angela Featherstone so much. was that she was just so very real and she was able to play a character that seemed very real and normal and um like a real person.
00:51:31
Speaker
And so I thought that was interesting. It's funny because yes, she does, but she has the quirkiness and maybe it's just her voice, just a quirky edge to her like Phoebe does. um i just yeah i Again, more of her would have been fantastic.
00:51:48
Speaker
um Yeah. Yeah. Couldn't agree more. But yeah, what did she say? you did a bad thing. a bad, bad thing. And Ross agrees. Yes. And she hasn't told anyone except for her roommate, which was where we... deviate off the trail of all the people and i guess it makes sense because if she used to work there maybe gunther needed to rent a room to somebody or something because she and gunther are roommates ross um well he doesn't go into central park yet that's a few scenes a away
00:52:23
Speaker
um is it no no that's next the next scene immediately he goes because he's like she says i told my roommate and he's like who's your roommate and then it's a shot strike that's right i was gonna ask you what gunther has on his time but i couldn't figure it out i can't tell right circle yeah something in it yeah um I, again, it's just brilliant writing because we know about Gunther's feelings for Rachel.
00:52:51
Speaker
So to include him in this way is genius writing, I think. Yes. Well, and they talked about that, that they loved that they had the opportunity to be able to and two play on Gunther's super big crush on Rachel.
00:53:09
Speaker
Yeah. Oh, was I not supposed to? ah Yeah, right. Yeah. Knowing that he is trying to sabotage a their relationship for his own selfish wants.
00:53:23
Speaker
um It's so well done. um And then Rachel, of course, is sitting there and Ross turns around looking very upset and rightly so. um And then I think, do we just cut at that point back up to Monica's bedroom where the girls are shouting?
00:53:40
Speaker
Yes. Okay. But there's this part and that's cut right there. Because in my episode, they're sitting on the bed next to each other and they've got all the wax strips on their legs.
00:53:54
Speaker
And Monica says, okay I've got an idea. I'll pull yours off and you pull mine off. And then Phoebe's like, Laura, you could just pull yours off.
00:54:06
Speaker
And I'll leave mine on because I can make this work. Nice. And then Monica's like, come on, we can do this. They they like pump each other up. And then they start ripping it off of each other's legs.
00:54:21
Speaker
I love it. And that's when are screaming. Right. And then the boys run in. and apparently they had to do a whole lot of ah retakes of this scene.
00:54:32
Speaker
Because they they would come running in and they were like, whoa, whoa, whoa, that's too much. you know and they said that one of the takes that they did they just walked in like all slow yes because they were so tired of refilming that one part where they rush in i love this this it's to me it's a ah a precursor slightly to Yeah, suddenly, yeah, we haven't seen it yet, where Joey has a stalker.
00:55:03
Speaker
And don't you remember, but Chandler grabs like the washing up liquid. Yes. You know, just grabbing a random. We have already it. That's right, of course. This is like Shields, where he's like ready to squirt it in her eye. Yeah. Yeah, and it's like just this undercurrent of when there's a crisis, Chandler just grabs something random. And in this case, it's a kettle. um A bright yellow kettle. Yeah, that's what he's going to save the day with. Joey, slightly more robust, has a saucepan of sorts, which I think would be a better choice if you're going to fend off somebody who's broken into the the the girl's apartment, I suppose.
00:55:45
Speaker
Yeah. But then Joey basically gets a little ah sexist and is like, you know, girls can't handle the pain, that kind of thing. then slaps it on. Yeah. And he just whimpers.
00:56:01
Speaker
Okay. yeah And then they cut out another little whimper there because he, like, whimpers. And then he looks at Chandler and Chandler looks at him and then he, like, holds his arm up and he whimpers again.
00:56:15
Speaker
And then Chandler's like, okay, Tin Man. Right. Like the Tin Man. And I thought that was so funny. And I was so disappointed to see that that got cut. Yeah, that was cut out. That was funny.
00:56:29
Speaker
That's a good line. i like that. um We kind of go back and forth a bit right between yeah the main apartment and the bedroom because Ross and Rachel come in arguing um You know going back and forth, and then it turns out that ross or Ross says that Joey and Chandler told him not to tell her, um which is going to get them in trouble a little bit. And that's it. Just wax the door shut. We're never leaving.
00:56:58
Speaker
Yeah. Chandler's lying at this point. um But, yeah, so Phoebe, Monica, Joey, Chandler, they are now essentially stuck in the bedroom. They cannot leave.
00:57:11
Speaker
ah which leads for some funny moments, I think. Yes. Ross wants to talk about it. um So Rachel starts asking some questions and then Rachel suddenly- Nobody likes change. Nobody likes change. It's great. Yeah, it's such a simple thing. But when Ross says she was different, Chandler's, uh-oh.
00:57:37
Speaker
like Because he knows that that's, of all the answers and things you could possibly say, it's not going to go well with that one. um i mean, I guess credit to Ross. He's just being honest, I suppose. I don't know. Which he should have probably been from the very beginning. Yeah, I mean, I'm hesitant to use the words giving Ross credit in this situation.
00:57:56
Speaker
But he was, i guess, yeah, yeah. But Chandler's going to wax the door, or says he's just waxed the door shut because he's not scared to leave. Rachel realizes Chloe was there um when she came over, which horrifies her.
00:58:15
Speaker
i mean, rightly so. It doesn't really make and what Ross did better or worse. But of course, that's just <unk>s an achy, achy situation. um I noticed that Rachel did say the words, we were on a break.
00:58:29
Speaker
um she says those words in this episode which i hadn't caught before because i was kind of waiting for ross to say were on a break but actually i think that's the next episode when he says it's later on yes yes he says i thought we were broken up yes he says we were on a break right I didn't even know what that meant i thought that meant broken up. And so then, yeah, I think it's a fun wrinkle to the thing of why the other break, I think unanimously, i mean, I know the cast have all said this too, and they were on a break that doesn't necessarily justify Ross's actions. I think that's a separate argument, but they were on a break and that was yeah Rachel's Rachel implemented this break.
00:59:17
Speaker
Um, right. So, Let's see. Ross, I do quite like Rachel's question and her... um
00:59:27
Speaker
detailed description of hypothetically what happened if Mark had, let's just say, spent the night. yeah And then Ross pretending like he would have been okay with it in a sense, and then acknowledges that he would have been devastated.
00:59:41
Speaker
I think he would have been more than devastated. um But I think he's putting a lid on it because we know jealous Ross is. He puts a lid on it to try and show Rachel he would have still wanted to have been with her.
00:59:54
Speaker
Um... you know, to try and see a future for him and Rachel. um Rachel, I did think of you in particular in this scene because Rachel orders a pizza um and Ross wants the ross that wants olives, which we just discussed last week. No, rachel that it Ross doesn't want anchovies. Right.
01:00:19
Speaker
Right. It's Joey who wants olives. That's right, it's Joey because he tries to telepathically. Right, which makes sense because he was the one who ate the jar of olives for $2.95. Yes, yes. Again, the thought of olives, not much would stop me if I'm really hungry from eating a slice of pizza.
01:00:39
Speaker
I would have to pick the olives off. um And I think um we have must chop it up very finely. That's right. Put it right there in the sauce. We must have discussed this, but just in case we haven't, if you and Mr. Wilson go, you know, let's order a pizza tonight. Where are you ordering from? And what are you getting?
01:01:00
Speaker
We're ordering from Domino's and I'm getting chicken wings. say Oh, ah, that's right. feel we have discussed that. Yeah. Yeah. a Pizza is not my jam.
01:01:11
Speaker
No. what Like, I don't know. It's just not, I think I ate too much of it or i don't know. For a while, one of my kids, ah I think if it was Fred.
01:01:24
Speaker
We had pizza every Friday because there was a song. And it was like, Monday something, Tuesday something, Wednesday, a Friday pizza.
01:01:35
Speaker
And so then because he learned that song, that was our weekly rotation. And then after, like, i just, I very seldom am I ever in the mood for pizza. so Interesting.
01:01:52
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, Lulu's like that. um Yeah. She's... She will have some pasta or something else. Yes. I mean, she will occasionally get pizza, but that's not not her go-to. Exactly. Exactly. Yeah.
01:02:08
Speaker
And so you're not getting a pizza with everything because you don't want olives. Controversial, though. I'm a big fan of... um it's an it's and say It's an unusual combination. I like...
01:02:22
Speaker
the Italian sausage and the pineapple. I'm a big fan of pineapple on the pizza. But not Canadian bacon and pineapple? It's very good too.
01:02:33
Speaker
There's something about the Italian sausage that we could get at Domino's or Papa John's or other places. Okay. um Which um I like a lot. But I do enjoy like almost any meat and then the the pineapple on the pizza is ah is a big hit for me. Yeah.
01:02:49
Speaker
yeah Um, yeah, no, they're not too fussy. I do like Papa John's because they've got this garlic butter, but we are going down a rabbit hole of of pizza places.
01:03:01
Speaker
Um, if we're getting like delivery, like, you know, going out is different. But, um, yeah, absolutely. I do like to make my own. I've got a little pizza oven. Um, haven't done it in while. Oh, that's fun.
01:03:12
Speaker
Yeah, it's a fun thing to do. Yeah. Yeah. Um, okay. Hang on. Um, Oh, what about,
01:03:25
Speaker
what about the wax? And then they're eating the organic wax. Yes. That's next on my notes. Do you realize that they have been in there at this point for five hours?
01:03:36
Speaker
So, no, and I'm glad you've noticed because I thought about it when Monica says at the end or near the end, like it's three in the morning. I i didn't know what time they went into the room. Well, Phoebe calls her work at 9.15.
01:03:52
Speaker
Well done. Thank you. Good thinking. No, that's actually six hours. Right. Oh my God. yeah Have you, ah oh my God. Like I don't, I can't even wrap my brain around having a conversation for six hours. Yeah.
01:04:10
Speaker
I cannot imagine fighting with somebody for six hours. No. Like I, I, that's might just be me. Maybe that's something that, that happens.
01:04:21
Speaker
But me, I, oh, that's so long. Yeah, that's a huge amount of energy going to something that's not good. um Yeah, no, not a fan of that. um But they're hungry in there, so they have decided to eat the wax, the look on Joey's face, where he's kind of like, this is not bad. Yeah. It's very funny. And this is where he brings out the line of, think I need a new walk. Yeah.
01:04:50
Speaker
it's just it said It's such a great moment with Chandler going, yeah. What does he say? is that you're Are you saying these words out loud? Yeah. yeah it's ah and because Yeah, there's something to that. A good, confident walk will get you far um in life, I think. It commands a presence. And I don't know what kind of walk I have. Yeah, you've seen these words. Yes, that's it. But everybody has a very distinctive walk. like I recognize people like by their gait.
01:05:21
Speaker
I think their gait and then probably you've had this too, both of us having been in education a long time. I know which teacher was walking or knew which teacher was walking down the hallway by the sound of their foot. that that Yes, or Yeah, yeah you you with almost certainty, its like that's this teacher coming down to to talk.
01:05:45
Speaker
But you're right. very distinctive gait. um yeah Ross begs Rachel to to fight for them and not bail. I don't like the way.
01:05:56
Speaker
Oh, tell me. Wait, right before that, Monica's like, it's three in the morning and they haven't even noticed I didn't come home. And then Phoebe says, some people are so self-involved.
01:06:11
Speaker
And I thought that was so funny. It's a good line. I mean, I think Monica has a point. um You know, if they had just paused for a second, somebody would have gone, we need to wrap this up before Monica walks in the door or something. Yeah, think I think Monica is, I don't think it's being self-involved actually at this point. It's been ah long enough.
01:06:34
Speaker
um Yeah, because this is a crazy amount of hours. Yeah. Ross begs Rachel to fight and not bail. I mean, I get it. They're probably both emotionally exhausted, so I'm not going to judge him too hard. But I don't like the fact that he kind of puts this on Rachel for a minute. you know are you and What are you going to do? Are you going to bail? Well, she kind of would have every right to.
01:06:58
Speaker
ah Right. But at this point, ah yeah, I am. i I see. I will hardly ever side with him. But like at this point, we've been talking for seven hours. What are you doing to do? Because this is all on you. I've made it very clear. Like I'm here. I'm sorry. Whatever it takes.
01:07:19
Speaker
Like it's up to you. Right. That's true. i Like he's he's owning it. I screwed up. I did something terrible and I can't take it back. And so this is where we are.
01:07:33
Speaker
Can you hang or can you not? Right. And i I probably would have had that conversation six hours prior. Right. I whatever, you know. Yeah. um Ross tries to kind of kiss her to kind of Oh, you know, again, not fair. I'm not saying he's really trying to do anything other than bring them back together. But he's trying to kiss her And then I do think it's brilliant acting by Jennifer Aniston. Oh, man. She does well here for a comedy. She manages to bring some some serious chops to this scene because you can tell she's not.
01:08:15
Speaker
It's not anger. It's it's she's heartbroken. Um, when she says to Ross, like you're a different person to me now, oh, like it she does so well.
01:08:27
Speaker
Um, like you can feel the pain. um in that moment it's not it's not anger and things like i said so sadness and she conveys it so well um this is where i'm gonna need your help again because at this point in the they leave the ones the four trapped in the bedroom go to leave and rachel's asleep on the couch and as they're kind of walking in the bedroom on hbo it cuts out you don't see the end of what happens. It looked to me like maybe Monica was going to tuck in Rachel like a blanket. Uh huh. Cause it looked like she was walking towards the blanket. Okay.
01:09:04
Speaker
But she was okay. But it, it actually cuts over to Chandler and Joey. Okay. And Joey is like walking out and you know, they're carrying their shoes cause they're trying to be very quiet, not to break we' up Rachel. And so then Chandler says, they get to the door, Chandler goes, is that your new walk?
01:09:26
Speaker
Yeah, that rings a bell, yes. And Joey goes, no, i really have to pee. And I thought, oh, my God, how long have you been there that long? It's brilliantly done. What great way to tie it. Now you say it, ah you know, when it was on TBS or something. Yeah, yeah.
01:09:48
Speaker
That really does ring a bell. ah Yeah. Yeah. What a great, great episode. I think this one is, um, Let's think, i don't really, it's not really, you've you've brought so much trivia that you or the you know, the stuff we might talk about to this, that add these not direct sorry commentary. No, no, it does I want more of it. I think this is the stuff that you and I both live for. um Yeah. It's these little nuances and behind the scenes stuff.
01:10:20
Speaker
um That's, it's just fantastic. Well, let's think how many tubs of vaccine are we giving this episode? I put down waxing strips.
01:10:32
Speaker
Okay, or strips, because you could do half a strip easier than a tub. Let's do that. How many waxing strips are we giving this episode? I'm going with nine, and I could easily bump up to nine and a half.
01:10:46
Speaker
Yes. I think it's it's gosh darn near perfect. ah really I really, really, yeah. Yeah, I'm going to bump it up to nine and a half.
01:10:57
Speaker
You go for it. Because i'm I'm literally the same. I gave it a nine. And then I was like, well, what more could it have done to be a 10 or a nine and a half 10?
01:11:09
Speaker
And you know you can't really think of anything because to me, it had so many yeah great things. But I'm just going to give it nine. Because, again, i had a quick glance over some of the other ones I've given a nine to, and they're they're just about as perfect as you can get. This one, for different reasons, I think the acting in this one is brilliant, but it's there's so much going on which is highlighted by the fact that this might be the longest episode of the Purple Door podcast we've ever done.
01:11:38
Speaker
whoa we're cut i mean we're not even done yet but it's going to be close if not because there's so much in this so yeah i agree with you a solid solid nine and who would be your gunther central park this week so i'm struggling i'm struggling because i had originally said rachel Right.
01:12:02
Speaker
And then, and it was, it was a lot of, because God, like what a good actress. And then she goes from being it just, it she's so great.
01:12:14
Speaker
Right. Yes. But then I'm like, God, Phoebe's so funny. Right. She is so funny with her little one liners in this episode. And um yeah. So like, Oh God, I don't know. It's a tough one.
01:12:31
Speaker
i guess I guess I'm going to stick with Rachel. Right. Because, like, goodness. Yeah. um And oddly, we're both giving this... Well, but you you started at nine, went to nine and a I'm going with Rachel as well. I was going between...
01:12:48
Speaker
You know, sometimes it's the character, sometimes it's the actor. But for me, yeah Jennifer Anson, and I've got to give David Schwimmer credit here. I think he plays Ross oh really well. Just that the ups and the downs, the emotions of that scene. You see, i know he has a big theater background. the panic.
01:13:06
Speaker
and yeah And just all of it. Like, God, so cool. You know, I think I'm going to give them actually, they're gonna be I've only done this once before. They're going half a point each because I think both of them deserve credit for the acting, especially in that last scene. Yeah.
01:13:24
Speaker
It's so different from the kind of thing they normally do. And it just drew me in and I forgot how how well done that last scene was. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, so, so good. Just so talented. Yeah.
01:13:39
Speaker
So talented. Yeah. And then, and God. Or maybe it should be the writers. Maybe that's who I want to give it That's a great idea. can't really do that, but I mean...
01:13:52
Speaker
the writing of it and the way that they, the details and the, ah it's just so good.
01:14:03
Speaker
Yeah. um i I very much forgot just how good this episode is. Yeah. And it's funny and it makes you feel and it's, dude, I'm i'm changing it. I'm i'm giving it 10.
01:14:18
Speaker
you' give You're just going for it. more that we talk about it, yeah i like I don't know that there's anything I could have changed. Right. It's still funny. It's still a sitcom, but then it it it makes you feel, and then the acting is crazy, and but the acting couldn't be crazy and so good if the writing wasn't spot on.
01:14:46
Speaker
I just had a quick look at IMDB just to see. And a lot of people gave it 10 out of 10. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, the average is nine, but there's there's a lot of a lot of people saying basically exactly where you're this what more could you possibly put in an episode?
01:15:07
Speaker
Yeah. Several people say it. Yeah. Yeah. One of the best episodes there is. Let's see. Yeah. One of the best episodes because of the emotions drawn out by Jennifer Aniston David Schwimmer.
01:15:21
Speaker
Um, Let's see. thattata This one's about to, sorry, the computer's decided to be a little slow. um But it's mostly about their acting and how the rollercoaster of emotions.
01:15:35
Speaker
um Just see, it's a touching episode. And how did they balance, it's such a heartbreaking episode with so many laughs. um Just like you were about, and that's purely down to the writing. Yeah.
01:15:51
Speaker
Yeah, a few people are saying that there's been great episodes before, but this is really a defining moment. um The acting is superb, but i still hate Ross. Did you write that one? right I wish! Whoever writes that. And um and then somebody is saying that this is interesting to do, actually. This summarizes Ross' character completely of one episode. I've not read this before, so maybe i don't agree. but it says he's needy can be demeaning looking for a trophy girlfriend um who should not have a real career he's almost a pest that might be a little harsh um let's see dr says that yeah basically it's kind of just saying that this summarizes ross like he does adore rachel there's no doubt he's got this genuine love for her
01:16:45
Speaker
But he sucks. But he still kind of sucks. And that is shown in this episode. Yeah. And then, again, giving credit to David Schroemer for being able to portray that so well. Okay. But here's here. I have an issue with that.
01:17:00
Speaker
Right. Because that's not this episode. The episode prior is whenever he's really honing in on the not having a job and, you know, you're not spending time with me and da-da-da-da-da. Right, you're right, you're right. mark In this whole episode, that's not where his brain is.
01:17:22
Speaker
Yeah. You know, he doesn't even bring it. She's the one who brings up Mark. in this one and so i i like i i don't know here' here's the here's the interesting thing that sounds like somebody who would be like fighting with somebody and then bring up something from six years ago yes i agree and because somebody else just wrote that they're they're very much on rachel's side but they said just an interesting wrinkle is to remember that rachel was the other girl she cheated with barry when he was engaged to mindy
01:17:57
Speaker
which I don't really think has so any impact, but it is interesting. Yeah, it's somebody else who wants to bring up stuff. that Yeah, yeah. You can't do that, guys. No, I'm i'm very much on Rachel's side, not big but not for those reasons. Interesting. interesting I'm not on anybody's side. right That whole situation just sucks.
01:18:20
Speaker
Yeah, and again, it sucks and it's being talked about 30 years later because of the writing. Yeah. So well balanced. Well, all right. well ah Any final thoughts before we wrap this up? This has got to be the longest episode.
01:18:36
Speaker
and it's Because it's such a good one and there's so much good stuff. Brilliant, brilliant stuff. I totally enjoyed talking about this with you this morning. Thank you. 100%.

Excitement for Upcoming Episode

01:18:48
Speaker
Couldn't agree. And I'm looking forward to talking about the next one, which is the one without the ski trip.
01:18:55
Speaker
Yes. I'm excited about that one. one's so funny. Yeah, there's funny. I don't remember all of it, but I remember the like being at the gas station and the the phone The phone, the pay phone. Yeah.
01:19:09
Speaker
There's lots of little things I remember. Like, I won't say them this There's a couple of one-liners in there. And i love that smoking is bad. We know this.
01:19:21
Speaker
But the fact that Chandler, what causes him to start smoking again in this episode. Oh, I forgot. Yeah, right. And the funny nuances related to that.
01:19:34
Speaker
Very funny. forgot about that. Yeah. um Yeah. Well, we will discuss that
