00:00:04
Speaker
Well, hello and welcome to this week's episode of the Purple Door Podcast, a friend's rewatch pod and one of your hosts, Alistair, alongside Deanne. Deanne, how are you today?
00:00:16
Speaker
I'm awesome, Al. Wonderful. Deanne's mostly awesome. It was. She's awesome, she says. Yes. ah Yes. Yes. We're we're recording and ah on a weekday evening, which we don't typically do, but schedules sometimes dictate that this is what needs it to happen this week, which is just fine.
00:00:40
Speaker
Yeah, it is. It's great. Yeah. yeah So how was your day
Deanne's Visit to Texas Tech
00:00:44
Speaker
today? Did you have a good start to the week? ah It was super busy because part of the reason why i was unavailable this past weekend, we went to Texas Tech and we toured Texas Tech for my for Fred. And it was super fun and it was great and wonderful and man-like. Red Raiders, they do love Red Raider land.
00:01:12
Speaker
Yes. I've only been to Lubbock once and it was fored for a day? Yeah, just for a day. yeah Did you go to Prairie Dog Town?
00:01:24
Speaker
No, i went we went... to visit a friend. It was actually a former student who'd moved out there. we went out there, watched them play soccer, and then came home, like, the next day.
00:01:37
Speaker
Yeah. I think, like, if we were not there long. Went to the Buddy Holly Museum. That was the only thing that I did. did see that that was a thing. Yeah. Our our good friends, the Roberts. Yes. They are all tied pretty tightly to Tex. Indeed. So I reached out to her. And I said, hey, so we're here.
00:01:57
Speaker
What do I need to, like, what's something fun that we can do after the tour that's, you know, unique to Lubbock? And then ah we're going to go eat. So what do we need to go eat? So she gave us an excellent recommendation. And we all ordered something totally different. And it was delicious. It was great.
00:02:18
Speaker
It was a teddy bear. Teddy Bear? No, I can't think of what the name of the place was. But like Fred got quesadillas, Joseph got like something and I got something else and it was all really great, but it was all, oh, Joseph got a burger and I got this like rice and chicken.
00:02:38
Speaker
And then we, after we toured the beautiful campus, We went to Prairie Dog Town, which I remembered as I was standing there. I went there as a little kid. And it's so weird. Very nice. All these prairie dogs just popping up out of the ground and running around and yelling. And it was so cute. Is it as windy as I remember? I just remembered the wind didn't stop.
00:03:03
Speaker
Wasn't windy? I didn't. No, didn't notice that. we Okay. Maybe just when I was there. Yeah. um I imagine that's probably accurate. um yeah But ah what else I noticed, like this the campus was beautiful, but everywhere we went, everybody was so nice.
00:03:23
Speaker
Not a crabby person to be found. And I loved that. that just That could turn a bad day into a good day when you just meet good people. Yes. So yay Lubbock and yay tech. And we will figure out in the next two months what Fred's plans are. Very nice. Well, keep us updated and good for Lubbock.
00:03:46
Speaker
Yeah. And then you've got like super awesome things coming up. and Yeah, it's a busy weekend. Well, I suppose this is coming out next week, so it will have already
Alistair's TED Talk and PhD Journey
00:03:57
Speaker
happened. i will, maybe I'll put it out on our social media. i will have recorded a TED Talk that's being put on at the university where I work. And then we have a French trivia night, which will have passed by the time this time comes out. sorry Sorry, Kate just sent me a text.
00:04:21
Speaker
That's on the Sunday, through the Sunday after this comes out. Sorry, I got distracted. And then I'm defending my PhD or will have defended my dissertation by the time this episode comes out. I may or may not be doctor.
00:04:35
Speaker
We'll see. Oh, my gosh. Yeah. It's a big 72 hours. My goodness.
00:04:46
Speaker
Yeah, it could be done, done. after i was calculating 14 years of being being in school. That's incredible. Yeah, 14 years of higher education.
00:04:59
Speaker
Maybe coming to an end. Fingers crossed. Okay, so like how will what Sunday, will we know? Like, what... So but yeah but Monday afternoon, I go to defend at three o'clock.
00:05:15
Speaker
It'll take an hour or something. And my committee will deliberate right then and there. And then they will let me know, yep done. you You have passed. Or we've got some more work to do. And we'll do this again in the very, very near future.
00:05:32
Speaker
That's so we'll see so's exciting. Yeah, it's exciting. i in the mindset of whatever happens, it's all a step in the right direction. Okay. support that, but for me, I'm like, let's go, Dr. Green. Let's go. it's exciting. It's exciting times. It's weird because all I know is studying. It's been doing forever.
00:05:57
Speaker
Almost there. Almost there. Well, it will be. Like I said, when this comes out, it will hopefully be done. e We'll see. We'll see. I'll let everyone know. Oh, my gosh. I'm so excited.
00:06:11
Speaker
Thank you. Thank you. Well, before all that, though, we have an an interesting episode to discuss, the one where Monica and Richard are just friends.
00:06:22
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, this is, this is it's it I don't know, and we'll get into it. I don't know how I feel about it. um But I do know how I feel about Bamboozled, and that's not great, because you are still winning 2-1.
00:06:34
Speaker
After five rounds of our new format, we have tied twice, then you won two, then I won last week. So here's hoping I can continue this little run.
Friends Trivia Exchange
00:06:45
Speaker
All right. We will see. And I've completely, let's see, you went first. I have lot of color questions this week. Okay. Okay. Well, I go first this week.
00:06:57
Speaker
Counting down. um Yeah, I'm looking through my questions. We'll see. We'll see how this goes. All right. My first one for you is where does Richard's blind date live?
00:07:12
Speaker
Oh, it's his sister's neighbor. It is his sister's neighbor, yes. Yeah. So wherever his sister lives. Exactly. That's all I was looking for. You got it. Exactly right. e e e All right.
00:07:28
Speaker
What color is the book Little Women?
00:07:36
Speaker
All right. And so every time we see Joey with it. Yep. One of them is kind of like almost like an off-white. That's what I'm going with. can't Can I go with off-white cream? No, no. Okay, then the other one's kind of orange or something.
00:07:53
Speaker
No? I don't remember. I don't know. i would call it red. Call it red. Well, I got it wrong, and I went for the cream one anyway, which would be... The Shining. The Shining. The Shining. So I got it wrong. That's the one I was really going for.
00:08:11
Speaker
Ah, all right. So no points for me. All right, second question for you. What is Monica going to teach Richard how to make?
00:08:22
Speaker
Lasagna. It is indeed. It is indeed. All right, what have you got for me? It's so right? Because isn't that what she made for him?
00:08:34
Speaker
For whenever they had the first, um whenever she was catering, Oh,
00:08:45
Speaker
oh anyway creat yes. she catered this party. Yeah. um And I know that... Ah, the mum made... the Mrs. Geller had frozen ones in the freezer. Because Monica made something else and then her fingernail fell in the cups, whatever it was, the quiche cups.
00:09:01
Speaker
So mum got the frozen lasagnas out. Okay. Okay. Yes, that was it. That, yes. Okay. And then whenever they made she made the 12 lasagnas.
00:09:15
Speaker
That, okay. Hang on. Never mind. That's all. Don't let me get sidetracked like that. Okay. Sorry. Not sidetracked. All right. I can sit here and start like focusing and freaking out. All right. You asked me my second question.
00:09:29
Speaker
Okay. Okay. What are the three things that Phoebe learned from Robert? Oh, I thought about writing some of these down.
00:09:40
Speaker
Playing basketball. Oh, playing basketball. Okay. Layup, foul shot, and then a 23-pointer. Nice job. And why she get 23 points? Because she's dainty.
00:09:54
Speaker
Yeah. yes Yes. I loved that. Yes, as she should. All right. Well, let's see. We're back in Monica's kitchen. What does Monica use to get Richard's shirt clean?
00:10:10
Speaker
Club soda. She does indeed. And I've got to be honest, I don't really know what that is. ah you You do. You're three for three. Yeah, of course. i oh What's wrong with me? Yeah, it's gross.
00:10:23
Speaker
It tastes disgusting, but it's like bubbled bubbly water. It's gross. There's no flavor to it, and it's disgusting. Yikes. All right. Your question from me.
00:10:36
Speaker
All right. What color are the candles in Richard's bedroom? that Monica goes around and she's trying to blow them all out.
00:10:48
Speaker
And it was an odd color for candles. I didn't understand. And so that's why it stood out. All right. Well, I did not notice. You said odd.
00:10:59
Speaker
So I'm going to go with green candles. Oh, that's a good guess. No, they're like this weird... Brown, i wrote down brown slash gold.
00:11:11
Speaker
So if you write if you had said either one, I would have been. right. This is not looking good for me after three questions each. You're you're a perfect score. 3-1 to you. Let's see This would be for the win.
00:11:27
Speaker
oh Yeah, you got plenty of chances to win though, but this one, this would take it. So a lot of this episode is about the shiny and little woman, but in at least two scenes, we see Ross reading a book.
00:11:40
Speaker
What's that book called? Okay. What is
Literary Discussion: Stephen King and 'Little Women'
00:11:43
Speaker
it called? Is it called race It is called race. And then you got it. because And then the subtitle about like. couldn't read it. Yeah, the subtitle. I just really look at it. It is something about race relations in education or something.
00:12:00
Speaker
But it's definitely race. You are four for four. Awesome, because do you know the only reason that looked at that, and I wasn't wearing my glasses, and then I watch it, and it's on the DVD, so it's a little fuzzy, but the only reason that I paid attention to that was because one episode, you asked me about the magazine that Ross was reading. Yes, did. And I was like, oh, that book was in like two or three shots, and so I was like, hmm.
00:12:29
Speaker
Okay, cool. Nicely done. All right, you are four for four. I'm just playing for for pride at this point. All right, so what drink is Chandler making in the girls' apartment?
00:12:41
Speaker
Drink is Chandler making in the gulls of power. Chocolate milk, right at the beginning. Yes. Yes. All right. thanks I'm 29. 29. Who's too old for chocolate milk? Yeah. i mean, i haven't had chocolate milk in a long time, but not because I'm too old. It just hasn't crossed my path.
00:12:59
Speaker
Right. Exactly. I imagine chocolate milk would make an average day a good day if you had a nice cold glass of chocolate milk. I think it would improve everything. Yes.
00:13:10
Speaker
yeah All right. This is for five for five. Okay. it's ah It's a tough one, i think, but there's ah there's a cool backstory that we'll talk about. Oh, I do like cool bad stories.
00:13:22
Speaker
After Phoebe and Robert have played basketball, we she's in the coffee house. What country is mentioned on Phoebe's shirt?
00:13:36
Speaker
There's a country. I'll give you, it's not really a clue. There's a whole story behind this shirt she's wearing in real life. Okay, what color is this shirt?
00:13:46
Speaker
Mostly yellow. there's there's There's some graphics on it. It is not Italy. I think you get two more guesses. It's ah it's it's a bit obscure. I'm going to tell you that.
00:13:58
Speaker
Sweden. No, not Sweden.
00:14:07
Speaker
Bangladesh. No, but that's a great, great obscure country. The answer is Lithuania. It is Oh. Lithuania.
00:14:20
Speaker
I didn't notice that. Yeah, and there's there's a reason behind it because I recognized that shot and I Googled it and then I figured out why I recognized it. Just for pride, I think you have one more question for me.
00:14:34
Speaker
Okay. So whenever Rachel comes looking for ice and it there's none in the freezer, then they're probably out. Yes. She does find ice. Yes.
00:14:48
Speaker
What color is that ice tray? Alright, well first of all I will say have a question about this scene when we get to it. I don't remember but I've already been gone for green once, I'm going to go for green again.
00:15:01
Speaker
Is it red? No, then I do not i do not know. Blue. Well that would make sense. Water, ice, all of that. That was a poor showing for me. You comprehensively beat me this week. I'm sorry, I'll um all the colors. No, now going to look for colors. Now now I'm on board.
00:15:21
Speaker
I'm on board. Yeah, well, yeah and the thing is, is that we both had asked how old Ross was. Yes, yes. we both asked that one. And so I was not going to ask about the color of the little women book. But then, because I did, that ended up making over half my questions color questions. I need to think through that. I like Well, I'm going to take a a good look at the colors next week. So that's all right. That is quite all right.
00:15:51
Speaker
Let's get started. Why don't we start off in the video store where Monica bumps into Richard? um She instead of $3, it's $6 because she's returning a couple of minutes late, allegedly. Yeah, that guy that guy's feels like as Monica, I think, says he has too much power.
00:16:15
Speaker
yeah And I have a tensing degree. That's not good customer service. You want people to come back. um So bad customer service. But Richard is there and he helps her out with the remaining $3.
00:16:26
Speaker
three dollars But she has a couple of items of clothing stuck to the back of her. Is this a shirt? Well, one's on her leg. Right. One's on her leg and then one's on the back of her shirt. It's a sock on the back of her shirt and then the underwear on her leg. That's right. And she's like, God just saw an opportunity or something. It's just a great line. Richard ends up asking Monica to get her a hamburger. i've always I've always thought I was curious. I've never Googled it. I should do it today.
00:16:59
Speaker
Growing up, it was a beef burger, which makes more sense for me, because that's what it's made of. It's not made of ham. But then hamburgers now become become... It's hamburger everywhere now, I think.
00:17:11
Speaker
But like why is it called a hamburger and not a beef burger? It's always been called a hamburger over here. Yeah, it has been here, but in the UK, it was a beef burger. But that's kind of changed, I feel.
00:17:23
Speaker
I wonder why. always thought it was weird. Because ham is pork and burgers are pork. Exactly. There's got to be a reason. Huh. hu Yeah. but you know he invites her for a burger and I guess they end up going. Just as friends. Just as friends. Just as friends.
00:17:43
Speaker
um And oh I liked it whenever she said um she said I think, what she say? Like, I don't think something about like the time or something.
00:17:59
Speaker
Like it's not been long enough. oh she takes it that He goes, yeah, I had lunch at 11. Yeah, it's too soon. He's like, no, it's not too soon. i had lunch 11. That's right. Yeah. that's ah Eight o'clock is really late to have a burger, I think. I think so. Maybe that's just me and my old
Analyzing Monica and Richard's Friendship Dilemma
00:18:16
Speaker
Well, but Richard is not young. I think that is lateed that's late to have a heavy meal. Yeah. That's what I thought too. But evidently they they do. We go over to the girls' apartment the next morning. Chandler's making his chocolate milk.
00:18:33
Speaker
Ross is being Ross and thinks that that's not for somebody who's 29. Yeah, Monica comes out. She tells them she's met Richard and she's going to go out with him again.
00:18:45
Speaker
um Yeah. having I thought it was funny whenever, because Rachel's like, you know, somebody got home late last night and she's, you know, I ran into Richard and she's like, oh, when did that happen?
00:19:00
Speaker
802. Right. fun Exactly. The writing is just so good. you know it is. It's so cleverly done. Yeah. And there's never an innocent burger.
00:19:16
Speaker
That's right. i did It was one of those lines that you could easily miss, but when Phoebe says that, it's I just love it. It's such Phoebe line to to drop in vegetarianism in that way.
00:19:29
Speaker
um Well, and then, and then there you know, what are you doing? And then Chandler is so funny right there. Because he's like, well, she broke up with him six months ago,
00:19:41
Speaker
so You know, obviously she's got to do it again. took her six months to get over him. So why not celebrate? That's right. Why not celebrate? Like, oh my gosh. But yeah, nobody is supportive of this because they've had to hold their hand through it. Yeah. They all know what's going to happen because as Richard talks about later on,
00:20:06
Speaker
nothing's changed nothing's changed they both in the in the same position which just said um we go over to the boys apartment and joey and rachel start talking about shining and little women and okay i was gonna i wanted to ask you but you go ahead you've got thought yeah i was gonna ask you have you read either one of these books neither one I'm deeply ashamed.
00:20:32
Speaker
And this has been on my, my little radar for a couple of years. So Stephen King wrote the shining, right? Yeah. I have never read a Stephen King book at all. The only thing have ever, the only thing I've ever seen of his was a made for TV movie. It was like a two night thing and it was phenomenal.
00:20:57
Speaker
Well, which one was it? It was called the storm of the century. Yeah, that is good. That it's one of those things I saw that 20 years ago when it came out and I think about it now and again, I stumbled across it on some, one of the streaming channels we have and watched it like all six hours of it.
00:21:17
Speaker
Cause man alive, that's a good story. And so there's, so there's no reason. I think Stephen King's just so prolific and so many books, I don't know where to start. I don't know what to do.
00:21:28
Speaker
um Okay, I can help you with that. All right. You are on it. i Al, I have read so many of that man's books and they are all over the place. So it is like, what do you want? You want a really, really just creepy mess with your head. Like what in the heck? And make you question like,
00:21:54
Speaker
Humans, and and what it is, read Needful Things. Read Needful Things. Yeah. That one is... ah It'll make you... it It'll make you... Gosh, because of the way he takes just human...
00:22:15
Speaker
I don't even know what I'm trying to say. right. I'll
Phoebe's Basketball Skills
00:22:20
Speaker
look it up. The neatful things. But all of his stuff, the way that he writes characters and makes them so human and flawed. Right. And it's just, oh, he's so good.
00:22:34
Speaker
He's so good. All right. Yeah, I mean, Kate's read a few and raves about them. It's just... It's so good. Now, have you got a book that you've read many times over?
00:22:49
Speaker
Yeah. I have a lot of books that I've read many times over. But there's one that like I've read many times over like as a kid and as an adult. Okay. And it's called Say Good Night, Gracie.
00:23:04
Speaker
And it's about a high school senior and she's going through with it and her best friend dies. And it's ah her going through the grieving process. but like Right.
00:23:16
Speaker
Oh, God. It's such a good book. And it just... I used it whenever I was in theater. I did theater one year in high school. I used it for my monologues.
00:23:30
Speaker
Right. Yeah. It's just... It's so... Good. And it's an easy, quick read. And then, Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret. I've read that a billion times. And then The Hunger Games. like And then Harry Potter, of course. Now, you know, I thought of you this week on, you'll know you'll know this, I'm sure. But I think it's advertised on Audible. They now have all the Harry Potter books. But the it's being read like ah like a plate with all the different characters. Okay. See, I knew you would know. I saw that. that even as It's called Graphic ah graphic Audios. Okay.
00:24:05
Speaker
Yeah. Or they call them graphic audios or, and something else, but I love those. Like I i bet you did Yeah. The court of thorns and roses. I listened to like three, three of those books in the graphic audio and so good, but trash. And if anybody under the age of anything is listening, don't read those. don't read them But, um but yeah, no, they're super fun because they've got all the actors and, So like whenever I'm driving and I'm listening to it, it's like there's a whole little movie going on in my brain while I'm driving. I love that. It's like on it's like um like old radio, like when they would replay. That's kind of awesome. I love that. Yeah.
00:24:50
Speaker
Yes, yes, yes. Super cool. This is the scene. I wanted to ask you about this because Rachel goes to get the ice and it appears that it is ice. But I don't think she pours any into the blender. I'm sure when she walks away, the blender is so empty.
00:25:04
Speaker
Like she pretends to pour ice in, but maybe to avoid the clinking and clinking while they're talking or something. Yeah, or to avoid having to do it multiple times.
00:25:15
Speaker
Could be. Could be. I think she pretends because I'm sure there's no ice in there when she walks out. That's funny. Yeah. Power of television. Yeah. Oh, my goodness. But this is, what we're about to meet Robert, the infamous Robert, who plays quite a funny part in this episode. Chandler and Ross meet him. This is who Phoebe is dating.
00:25:40
Speaker
He's wearing shorts, but, you know, he's from California. Because he might just burst into flames. That was such a funny one. It's so, so good. But this is where I do it. It gets a physical comedy.
00:25:54
Speaker
Chandler's awkwardness when Robert is, we'll just say, hanging out of his shorts. And Chandler like shrivels up like he just doesn't know what to do. And I'm like pulling Ross over to the the counter.
00:26:07
Speaker
um it That's so funny. Chandler just gets so awkward, so uncomfortable with all of this. Yes. Well, and then Ross...
00:26:20
Speaker
I don't know, man. Like, why? Why did you have to go check that out? Right. And then he kind leans down on the back of the sofa. Oh, God. But, yeah, and ah the two of them with that, and then later, whenever Joey's in there, then Joey just starts laughing. I like Joey's response. Yeah. All three of them are so funny.
00:26:42
Speaker
Yeah. It's so well done. So different from each other. Yes. But we'll get to see see Robert in a few more scenes, thankfully. But right now we bounce up to the girls' apartment. Richard is... No, Monica is helping Richard make lasagna for some some event. i forget now. I think she says, but I forget what it is.
00:27:05
Speaker
Yeah. um And there's just this playful... that They're not quite flirting, but they're certainly dancing around it. Yeah. And then he ends up getting sauce on his shirt.
00:27:18
Speaker
This is where the club soda comes in. That's one of those things I've heard of, but couldn't tell you what it's for, what it's made out of, anything. It's nasty. Yeah, I'm going to note that.
00:27:31
Speaker
She gets off his shirt, but he got some on his jeans, and he's like, I'm just going throw these out. So... um they're certainly flirting at this point with the idea of at least temporarily getting back together yes oh it's only going to go one way go over to Central Park Joey is reading Little Women I do like seeing Joey getting engrossed in a book it's not really what you associate with an activity he would enjoy so have you seen the movie Little Women do you know the story at all
00:28:08
Speaker
No, not at all. I know nothing nothing about Little Women other than it's in this episode. Nothing about The Shining other than the fact that it's written about Stephen King. And it's infaite like it's so well known. It's such a famous book. That's all I know. I know nothing about it.
00:28:23
Speaker
Okay, watch The Shining. Like, watch the movie and, like, the hotel in Colorado is famous. Okay. And, like, Katie Condren's gone and stayed there. You should ask her. I will ask her about it. Mm-hmm.
00:28:36
Speaker
She sure has. All But, yeah. Like, okay, The Shining, just real quick. o um Jack Nuggestone takes his family. They're staying in this hotel. He's, like, the groundskeeper or whatever during the winter.
00:28:53
Speaker
And the hotel is haunted. And he's got his son and his wife in there, there in the hotel. And so whenever he's talking in code, he's talking about one of the most iconic scenes where it's red rum, red rum. And it's right backwards. Okay. And so then they're twins and the kid starts. Okay. But anyway, and then they, everybody's going crazy. So it's excellent. Little Women is so good. It's about, it's, I think, four sisters.
00:29:31
Speaker
Four sisters. But it, Jo is, is one of the sisters and she kind of like goes against all of the, you know, normal. She's everybody's favorite because she doesn't follow the way that you're supposed to. And then she's got her older sister who's very perfect. And then, The the little one who's very young um that, you know.
00:29:54
Speaker
um but And then there's Lori who, and they she spoils all kinds of stuff, but it's so good. And the Winona Ryder version is is excellent.
00:30:07
Speaker
All But once I'm finished with this PhD nonsense, I've an ever-growing list of things to read watch. was going to say, you've got all kinds of things you've got to watch. Yeah, this ongoing list. um Yeah, I've got numerous books over my shoulder here that are on my to-read list.
00:30:26
Speaker
um Maybe I'll have to put The Shining and Little Women on there. So this is where Robert Phoebe come in. They'll be playing basketball. As we talked about Bamboozle, she's learned a foul shot, a, what was it? Layup. Layup and 23-pointer.
00:30:44
Speaker
That was it because she's dinty. Mm-hmm. And this is where Robert meets Joey. And I do i love Joey's reaction because Robert has get a quarter out of his sock. He always keeps one there. That that dates this episode.
00:30:59
Speaker
So he can make a phone call. And it's just the way Joey starts laughing immediately. Yes. it' not It's not really discomfort. It's just hilarity at this point.
00:31:11
Speaker
Like this is happening. oh Yes. It's so good. um Yeah. I mean, Robert must have known that this is an issue at some point in his life. Maybe not. Maybe nobody's told him.
00:31:29
Speaker
We'll get to the way he finds out in a bit. with One of my favorite lines of all time in Friends, without a doubt. But before that, we we do go back upstairs. Monica's on the phone with Richard, but he is at the door.
00:31:46
Speaker
She opens the door. Everything about that scene makes my tummy hurt. Yeah. Because she's talking to him on the phone and she's doing what she does. Like, and I even put my notes, like she's taking her chairs and put them on top of a table of the table so that she can clean the floor really good.
00:32:08
Speaker
Get a restaurant. Like, you know, she's just doing and talking along and, you know, and now you owe me three pretty things and all of that. Yeah. you know and uh uh and then she's you know are you you know are you sure yeah and then she opens up the door and tim and it's like oh yeah she's gonna get her heart broken again well you can just jes see it coming unfortunately
00:32:40
Speaker
but They end up waking up together and they discuss Richard's upcoming blind date. Yes. And her dad being his racquetball partner. That's right. That's so Oogie. Like, hey like don't don't do that, Richard. there yeah My mom's trying to set me up with some lawyer.
00:33:01
Speaker
Yeah. here's that I don't know. She doesn't have one yet. She just wants to. set out with lawyer With the line. I will tell you that's not in the streaming version. That scene. Oh! Oh, that bit. That bit. in the end It doesn't talk about who Monica... I'm going to pause for two seconds. One of the dogs is going nuts. Let me just go see why.
00:33:22
Speaker
okay All right. And we're back. Sorry. The dog was just barking away for no real reason. So that has now been ah resolved.
Monica's Awkward Encounter with Richard
00:33:33
Speaker
Nice. But yeah, that we didn't we didn't get that on the streaming bar. We just talked about Richard having an actual racquetball partner, but it doesn't mention anything about Monica's future love life. All right, anything like that. So yeah, that bit's definitely cut out. Yeah.
00:33:50
Speaker
Well, anyway, so after he tells her about the blind date, he asks her what about her? And she goes, oh, my mom's trying to set me up with a lawyer. And he's like, oh. but and you know And he he kind of inquires more. She's like, yeah my mom doesn't have one yet. She just wants to set me up with a lawyer.
00:34:08
Speaker
Yes. wowopb That's such a Judy thing, isn't it? That truly is. yeah um She's just relentless on poor Monica. do feel for Monica in that situation.
00:34:22
Speaker
um Robert and Phoebe, they're going to go to the batting cage. She's getting very sporty. while she's dating Robert. But first of all, she gets him some kind of stretchy pants. I'm not sure if they're shorts or a full-length thing.
00:34:37
Speaker
Again, Chandler's reaction to this, one of my favorite lines. Stretchy pants! You should wear them every day. love the way he says that twice. Just to emphasize it. Freaked out by the whole thing. It's great. But Robert can't wear them because he feels like he's on display.
00:34:58
Speaker
The irony. The irony of that. Yes. Well, and then that's when next is whenever Rachel...
00:35:10
Speaker
rachel tells Joey where she's at in the book. Right. Danny's the little boy. and so she says, you know, Danny just went into 217 and he, ooh, and then he starts with the, you know, blank makes blank a blank blank. Yeah. No blank and blank makes blank a blank blank.
00:35:35
Speaker
Yeah, they just ruin ruin this for um for each other. Ruin the books for both of them. Yeah. And then he comes back in. i He forgot his keys. That's right. Robert dropped his keys. and I can't remember the purpose of that. I'm sure somebody else did. Because so Rachel could see. because Rachel, that's right. joey so then he does it. And she's like, oh.
00:35:59
Speaker
That's right. That's right. Yeah. It's just going from bad to worse, but he has no idea. um Let's see. We end up back in the girls' apartment. Monica's had to work a double shift, and she lost a boob in a grill fire.
00:36:14
Speaker
And Rachel's reading The Shining, and whenever she comes in, right, she grabs the masher. The masher's there. Yeah. Yeah, because that'll definitely keep a ghost away. That's right. Why you grab that to to defend yourself.
00:36:31
Speaker
We'll never know. We'll never know. But Richard is there. He is swooning. He is. charming Monica again. charming monica again love And I thought it was sweet that Rachel knew he was in there, right? Yeah. And so she kind of laughed.
00:36:52
Speaker
She's like, what's so funny? And I think your your evening could get better. Yeah. It's a very sweet. It's a sweet touch by Rachel because she probably knows that this isn't really a good idea, but she's just being it she's been a good friend.
00:37:11
Speaker
i think i think she's trying certainly is we go back over to central park phoebe asks ross and chandler to tell robert about him hanging out and they're like absolutely not uh i'm with the boys on this one you you don't you don't know not a chance um But Robert comes in, they're ready to go rock climbing, and Phoebe decides it's time to break up with him. He thinks it's because he's just put something out there.
00:37:39
Speaker
Okay, do you remember before we um started recording, and then I wrote it down, that Priya Mariah... mariah Something like that.
00:37:51
Speaker
Right. But that's, it was the test that Captain Kirk, that they gave. Yes. Yes. Yes. Okay. And then he's like, no. And it's like that, but with a different word, period, something else.
00:38:04
Speaker
and Right. like Yeah, that's right. And then he said, that's the discounted place we stayed in is Israel. In Israel. Okay, yeah, i didn't have that bit.
00:38:16
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, weird. But then I was like, when did you go to Israel at a discount place? Must have been when they were kids or something. Oh, or college.
00:38:27
Speaker
That would make sense. Yeah, could have been. Yeah. okay Yeah, must must have been. Right. I like it. I'm sorry. I'm so distracted. I'm sitting in Fred's room. yeah He has got so many things on his desk and I keep touching and playing with them. That is quite all right. i Sorry. just you're You're owning it and that's amazing. So you just keep being you and I got this. I'm going to drive this train to the final credits. Don't you worry.
00:38:59
Speaker
We have got this. Okay, I have to ask you. Yes. it right now, whenever the your favorite line? This is it. This is it. Where Gunther bends over, looks up, and then goes, and I might get the first bit slightly the wrong, i think he goes, hey, buddy, this is a family place.
Gunther's Memorable Line at Central Perk
00:39:18
Speaker
Put the mouse put the mouse back in the house.
00:39:21
Speaker
Yes. it's just It's clever and it's funny and it's such a Gunther thing. like I don't know. It's just so well written. Yes. It's so straight to the point. Yeah.
00:39:34
Speaker
It's so funny. i just It's something about the way Gunther delivers it too. a bit like a bouncer. He's just deadpan. Put the mouse back in the house.
00:39:45
Speaker
What? This is family place. Yeah, like he sees this stuff every day. the mouse back in the house and walks away. i just, I love that delivery.
00:39:59
Speaker
Um, we head over to reach Richard's apartment for the one and lonely time in this episode, I think. And Monica's got roses out. She's being very, she's reciprocating the romance, but Richard comes back from his blind date and, uh, Richard gets rid of her.
00:40:16
Speaker
Um, I think taxable as best as he could in that situation. Monica's not fine. She can't do this. Um, But even as soon as they say that, they start negotiating with themselves about we're just friends who don't see other friends. And maybe we'll be friends who stand up in front of all of our other friends and say we'll love each other forever. They're just... No, we vow to be friends forever. We vow to be friends forever. That's it.
00:40:45
Speaker
um So, I mean, within, i don't know, one minute of her saying she can't do this, that she's already saying, let's have one more game of bracket ball. It's, there's, these two, these two can't, they can't quit each other.
00:40:59
Speaker
um Definitely having troubles. It is. um And then we kind of finish up in the girls' apartment. Joey comes in because Beth is sick in Little Women, and he wants to put the book in the freezer. That's where books live, when they're upsetting you.
00:41:15
Speaker
Yeah. Well, and that's what she she's the one who suggested it to him. That's right. you want to put it in the freezer? Yeah, because that's what he does with The Shining whenever it's so scary.
00:41:26
Speaker
Yes. Now, do you remember in an earlier episode, Rachel was reading Cujo? Yes, I do. Yep. Because that's also a Stephen King book. I did not know that. Alright. I'm sure we talked about it, but didn't stick.
00:41:42
Speaker
Yeah. Kujo and Christine are good like older ones. Alright. I'll look those ones up. I'm going to forget to tell you this. I want to do now. As soon as I saw that basketball shirt that Phoebe was wearing, but yeah but okay I was like, that's familiar. That's There's a story that
Phoebe's Grateful Dead Shirt Backstory
00:42:04
Speaker
I forgot what it is. So had to zoom in and Google it and you can see a skeleton on one side and it said team something and you couldn't quite make it out.
00:42:14
Speaker
But I thought it was like started with Lithuania. Anyway, it does say team Lithuania. figured that out. And here's the story. So that shirt was a real shirt that was made by all things the Grateful Dead band.
00:42:28
Speaker
Oh, cool. So Lithuania, and I think it was in the early 90s, had just been, they were part of the Soviet bloc. It all fought, the USSR had fallen apart. Lithuania couldn't afford to send their basketball team to the Olympics. They had no money.
00:42:42
Speaker
So the Grateful Dead decided to design Team Lithuania basketball shots with this skeleton playing basketball down one side and then kind of Grateful Dead design that said Team Lithuania down the other side.
00:42:56
Speaker
And the basketball team were going to get 100% of the money raised from this shot. They made enough money to send the team to the Olympics. That's awesome. And so you had that shot.
00:43:09
Speaker
That, I don't know. I should have looked that up. But it was all, the Grateful Dead heard this story that Lithuania had good basketball team, but didn't have the money to send them to the Olympics. So they decided for whatever reason to raise the money as a band themselves.
00:43:25
Speaker
which I love that. It's such a cool story. And I've forgotten it. And then, so i' was really glad that I saw that shot. Okay. So I know the Grateful Dead music because of my dad.
00:43:40
Speaker
Right. But, okay, where's the Grateful Dead? Where are they from? Couldn't tell you. I just know a couple of their songs. It's one it's one of those things, like, it's more the legend of them.
00:43:51
Speaker
I know. It's a bit like, um oh, I can picture the people, like Kiss. Like, I don't know much about them. I know a couple of their songs, but it's more the legend that is Kiss. Yeah. Yeah.
00:44:08
Speaker
Okay, so they're from California. Okay. Interesting. Yeah. Yeah, so there something. I'll dig into it a little more because I'm curious now. But, yeah, I recognize that shirt. And i'm like, that's that Grateful Dead Lithuania thing. And and sure enough, it was. Yeah. It was 1992 Lithuanian Olympic basketball team. Oh, okay. And now I see this shirt. Okay.
00:44:36
Speaker
I just recognized all the bright colors and I was like, that's such a pretty shirt. Yeah. and It has a big skeleton down one side, I believe. Yeah. Yeah. it's a cool thing. i died and Yeah. Yeah.
00:44:50
Speaker
And it's like, I just wonder which one of them got wind of the story and said, let's do something about this. And, and it worked. They did it. They won the bronze. one number Good for them.
00:45:02
Speaker
Good for Lithuania. Good for them. Yeah. It's an awesome thing. Are you all watching or did you all watch? Because I think it's over now, right? Finished yesterday. Did you all watch the Winter Olympics? You know, this, of all the Olympics, summer and winter, I think this was honestly the least I have watched, which I'm sad about. I just...
00:45:25
Speaker
I was busy. I was busy and didn't get into it. We watched most of the men's hockey final on Sunday morning. More so just because we were up, to be honest. Well, let's put that on because it's the USA against Canada. That'll be exciting.
00:45:40
Speaker
But other than that, I've just watched a couple of highlights of things. okay the Canadian controversy over the curling stone and bits and pieces, you know, i like, ah you know, I've kind of caught up with that stuff, but not really so much. Did you watch much?
00:45:58
Speaker
Not hardly at all. Yeah. Which is sad because the Winter Olympics, i always enjoy those more than... the the summer.
00:46:10
Speaker
yeah I enjoy like the bobsledding and the skiing and I love figure skating. So but no, oh let me tell figure skating. So I don't know his name. There's some gentleman that skates for the USA and he is like the the prodigal son right now he what he's the first one to do with this and he was the the what is it was it the quad no the quad is yeah five is it quad or five don't know yeah he first to do that he goes to Lulu my stepdaughter's university oh really they were having watching parties
00:46:52
Speaker
I will pass that on. Yeah, they you she is not there currently, but they were having a watching party. I know. Yeah. I need to hear how she's doing. I will pass that. She's doing tremendous. Yeah, she is overseas living her best life. um Yes.
00:47:08
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. well We'll fill you in on that. She is doing great. um Good. Well, let's think, who would be your Gunther Central Park this week? For me, this is a bit tricky.
00:47:20
Speaker
Oh, well, I just picked somebody because I felt like everybody was so funny, right? liked everybody, but I picked Chandler because I do love an unhinged, uncomfortable Chandler all the time.
00:47:36
Speaker
All the time. Yeah, he very much was. um I, I, I really, nobody stood out, but I went for Joey. I like his reaction to Robert.
00:47:48
Speaker
I like the way that we see a different side of him. He's really getting into reading. He's not somebody who typically reads. And yet he's, you know, he's, these are some, some classics of big books, you know, he's reading. This is not, you know, dirty magazine that he has picked up. This is, this is a real read. Good, so good for Joey.
00:48:09
Speaker
Yeah. Okay. Yeah. So that, and just his reaction to Rob, that hi the way he laughed, if I could give it to Gunther for his one line, I would, but that's, that, that would be crossing the line.
00:48:21
Speaker
So joy for me. um Let's think. I think it's, it's, let's think. What's it going to be? How many, what do we really have? We have lasagnas.
00:48:34
Speaker
Yeah. I might have to, i don't know. Could, well. i Wells was served up. I know, and I, uh, basketballs. There we go. Why not?
00:48:45
Speaker
How many basketballs are we giving? There's a sentence I never thought I'd say. How many basketballs are we giving this episode? Um, eight. Eight. Eight.
00:48:56
Speaker
Yes. Yes. All right. I'm going with seven and a half for me. Okay. I mean, again, I liked it. It was good. There's funny moments. I don't know how I feel about the Monica and Richard storyline regurgitating itself.
00:49:12
Speaker
Again, you know, because you just, it's only going to end one way, but it was a good episode. It was a good, good episode. Yeah. I feel like that's probably real.
00:49:23
Speaker
Yeah. Like, it's real. Yeah. Well, let's see. Next week, it is it's not what I thought it was. i kind of misinterpreted this with my my brain. It's the one with Phoebe's ex-partner.
00:49:37
Speaker
In my head, I had her ex-husband, but then I saw the first few seconds of this, and of course, the it's not her ex-husband. it's right Is it the blonde? Yeah.
00:49:47
Speaker
Yes, ah her musical partner. Yes. Yes. So, again, don't remember. She's got an interesting story, actually. I'm excited about that. Well, I look forward to hearing that one because I don't know much about her. ah I like her voice.
00:50:05
Speaker
in Yeah. You know, she's when she sings in this episode, that she's got a good, good voice. All right. Any other final thoughts before we wrap this up?
00:50:16
Speaker
Yes, um I was going between eight and eight and a half. So I feel like you have been a little too judgy. But that's okay. that' That's okay. my opinion That's okay. I like it. i like it. I think it would be dull if we always had the same things. So I like that. Right.
00:50:35
Speaker
You know, ah varying little things. um Good. I like All right. Well, you are winning 3-1 in bamboozled. i need to study harder for next week before the before you just run away and you're out of sight.
00:50:49
Speaker
um So on that note, I appreciate you as always. And thank you, everybody out there, for listening to the Purple Door podcast.
