Episode Highlight: 'The One Where Ross and Rachel Take a Break'
00:01:21
Speaker
um But let's see, this week it is the one where Ross and Rachel take a break. A pivotal episode in the Friends universe.
00:01:31
Speaker
Yeah, it is Yes, but of course we're going to start off with lots of trivia. um I never remember whose who goes first.
00:01:43
Speaker
but I go first this week because I go first on the odd episodes. See, and i remember the only thing I remember is that you remember. Okay. well there So after mulold after a couple of draws, you are still winning 3-1. You're holding a commanding lead yeah of two.
00:02:01
Speaker
So we'll see if that continues today. So you... no That was me flexing my trivia muscles. Flexing, as you should. As you should. If you don't see what I'm doing, then that might be weird noise. Well, I saw it and felt intimidated. So you did it well. Yeah. man i don't know how i feel about my uh skills today though i have to be honest i think you're gonna walk in and do just fine all right you go for it question you ready i'm ready what color were the olives that joey was paying to eat okay they were i'm 95 sure they were green olives
Trivia Time: Friends Episode Details
00:02:43
Speaker
Because I thought they were pickles, like little tiny pickles or gherkins or something initially until he said, all right. Yeah. Well, hey, did you know that there's a cut scene where he puts them all on his fingers?
00:02:58
Speaker
and I did not. and he's Yeah, he's talking about being an alien. and And it was so funny. But that was cut out. But it made me think of whenever I was a kid.
00:03:11
Speaker
and But we only did that with black olives. I don't know. Green olives are so very... seriously different than black olives. There's very few foods that I just can't stand.
00:03:26
Speaker
There's plenty. I wouldn't choose. Olives are up there in foods I just can't stand. Wow. All? yeah I've never never had an olive that I enjoy. If it's on a sandwich, like again, pretty much anything on a sandwich, I'll power through and it's fine. I will be picking olives off. They will ruin a good sandwich for me.
00:03:48
Speaker
wow see yeah don you not not a fan percent the opposite right two thumbs up two thumbs up from the woolison i love it well speaking of olives how much will joey owe monica if he eats all the olives two dollars and 95 cents See, you are off to a flying start. You know your olives.
00:04:12
Speaker
I do know my olives. I do. Because I felt like that was awfully cheap for such a large jar of olives. But, you know. We don't buy olives in a jar. We buy olives in a can.
00:04:28
Speaker
I don't know. Okay. right um What kind of beer were Ross and Chloe drinking? Your eyes just got really big. Man. alive I can picture the scene. in that label Okay. Can I ask you, is it, well, this might not be allowed. Is it a real beer? It's okay. Just ask.
00:04:51
Speaker
Oh, let's see. Wilson froze for just a second. Nope. Okay, is it a real beer? like Yeah. Or is it made out? Okay. I don't know why I think it's Miller Lite, but we're going to go with Miller Lite.
00:05:04
Speaker
No. No. It's called Red Stripe Beer. Ah, Jamaica's finest, Red Stripe. There he is. Yeah. No, I was way off. I thought I saw a blue label as I was trying to replay it in my head.
00:05:18
Speaker
Yeah, no, and the shape of the bottle is weird. like Yeah, Red Stripe's kind of like stubby, I think, isn't it? Yeah. yeah Ah, next time, next time.
00:05:31
Speaker
and Well, I like the fact that our first um two questions are kind of related to each other. I'm going to rephrase the way I had this written. Where is it that Chloe and Ross are having the beer? What's the name of that establishment?
00:05:45
Speaker
Oh, God. It's something with an S at the end.
00:05:54
Speaker
I'm going to tell you it does not have an S at the end. It doesn't? I thought it was... No, it's where Isaac is DJing. Yes, and Isaac is DJing, and it's it's not like fuzzies.
00:06:11
Speaker
No. No. No. ah ah I got it in my notes. But look at me not looking.
00:06:21
Speaker
You are integrity personified over there. Dang it, man. Jiggy. I don't know. it doesn't It's not a million miles away from Jiggy. It is the Philly.
00:06:34
Speaker
The Philly! Yes, ah um like it sounds like a sandwich. Well, I was thinking, I wonder if it's really called the Philadelphia, and that's a very odd name for a club, but the Philly it is.
00:06:49
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. There you go. Oh, come to think of it, I wonder if, yeah in my head, it's Philly like Philadelphia, but i wonder if it's Philly like Fill-o-more. Because that's a theater somewhere, in the Fill-o-more.
00:07:02
Speaker
Oh. I don't know. don't know. But wouldn't be with an F? Yes, the Philomores with an F, the theater. and i think that in menha I don't know why I think it was spelled with a PH. we I don't think we saw a sign or anything. I we did i didn't see a sign. I was looking for one.
00:07:20
Speaker
ah Anyway, it's all tied up after two questions, one each. Go for it. All right. So what was on Phoebe's sweater when she was asking Monica to go on the date with her?
00:07:32
Speaker
I have absolutely no idea. sweater. None at all. A red sweater. It something very large on it. Something very large. I'm going to go with...
00:07:46
Speaker
The other day Kate wore sweater. Is what? Go ahead. Go ahead. Oh, I was just going to take guess. Kate wears a sweater occasionally. The other day it has some cherries on it. So I'm just going to go with cherries.
00:08:00
Speaker
no No, no, but I am going to tell you there's something on it's it's giant and it's on her shirt and she has worn something with this on there before, but it's not the same sweater because the other one was cream colored.
00:08:15
Speaker
Goodness. What did she, all I can think about is the basketball shot we talked about the other week. Oh yeah. Yeah. Not going to be it. Um, it's an animal.
00:08:26
Speaker
It's a giraffe. Um, No. She has worn something with a giraffe, though. It's a moose. It's a moose. I would i was miles away. Miles away with my with my guess.
00:08:40
Speaker
But now I'm going to pay more attention. She has two... Moose sweaters. Mooses? Is mooses the plural of moose? Nope. Or is it just moose? It's just moose, isn't it? Yeah.
00:08:52
Speaker
Two moose sweaters. Yes. All right. My question three for you. I feel a little bad about this one because it's a different one. Oh, no. Yeah, I'm not going to lie to you here. So, and I'll give you the context.
00:09:06
Speaker
There is the scene where the Sergei and Phoebe and the translator, and they're standing outside her building. yeah can clearly You can clearly see on the building how many apartments there are, judging by the name labels and the and the buzzers.
00:09:21
Speaker
How many apartments are in Phoebe's building? Wow. It's eight or ten.
00:09:31
Speaker
It's not. Ah! Twelve. It is six. It is six. There are six nameplates and buzzers and then one big intercom thing at the bottom.
00:09:43
Speaker
Okay, wow. Wow, and I, yeah, I can see it in my head, but, you know. Right. Not that detailed thing. All right, let's see. So you're, we are struggling.
00:09:57
Speaker
We are, but we're tied, aren't we? We are. We're both one out of three.
00:10:06
Speaker
We're rocking. Yikes. Okay. What was Rachel eating whenever Ross called?
00:10:16
Speaker
Oh, what was Rachel eating when Ross called? This, I'm assuming, is when she is in her
Ross's Behavior: Host Reactions
00:10:22
Speaker
office and he calls and she's... No. Oh, when Oh, when Ross called. Oh, okay. um um I assume she's eating the Chinese food.
00:10:33
Speaker
Yeah, but it's something... Oh, an egg roll. An egg roll. An egg roll. Very good. Yes, because she didn't want it and then... That's right. And then she took it and ate it and then he called and then stupid Mark kept talking.
00:10:46
Speaker
George is very concerned about just what a mess that all ended up being. I have, you know, we we will obviously get into Ross's attitude and behavior and, you know, what Rachel does or doesn't do. But I've got some issues with the other characters too, which we'll get into.
00:11:02
Speaker
um But before that, I am now, let's see, I've got two out of four. You have one out of three. So here's to tie it up. How long did it take the Germans to get across Sergei's country?
00:11:19
Speaker
What? So I'll set the scene. Monica says something like, where is this country? Because they never actually name it. um And she says it's tiny. And Phoebe says, yes, but Sergei said it took the Germans. Oh, I almost said it.
00:11:36
Speaker
Six days. Six weeks. Dang. Six weeks to get across the country, even though it was tiny. Yeah. yeah Wow. Wow.
00:11:49
Speaker
wow o wow all right this this Your question for me could give me the win. could. All right. all right i am flexing and ready. It's singing You say it's easy sometimes. did Monica draw on her note that said call Rachel?
00:12:12
Speaker
I think I know. Yeah, you know. Well, because I'm going between two.
00:12:22
Speaker
Is it a turtle? No. No, but it's and not it's an insect and it's like a ladybug, ladybird. Yes. ah
00:12:36
Speaker
with it And it's got a top hat. Yes, because he's so fancy. That's right, because he's fancy. to win Oh, I feel like you were being a little generous there, though, because I did say the wrong answer first.
00:12:52
Speaker
I just pictured something with a round back. Mm-hmm. That's it. Mm-hmm. All right, well, I... And which is so because whenever I think of it, it's standing up.
00:13:06
Speaker
And it's got i see that belt hat on, and you can't see the rounded back, so... Isn't that funny? In my head, it's like all fours. And I just think it's a little funny because Top Hat came up last week with the um the sign on the bathroom doors. Yes, it sure So odd that Top Hat is in the Friends universe twice. Well, let me ask you this last question.
00:13:28
Speaker
Why is Rachel going to be working all night? Oh, because there's an underwear emergency.
00:13:38
Speaker
no You know what? I think that's... Is it shipping underwear emergency? No, I was just thinking, that i had written down there was a disaster in shipping, but I think what you said is the disaster that's in shipping. It Yeah, exactly. yeah I think you're right. this' just not re and all that And then there's a cut scene where Ross is asking her and whenever she says there's an underwear emergency, and he's like, what was it?
00:14:06
Speaker
um did somebody make you laugh too hard or something like that and I was like stupid oh that's why that joke got cut well i feel i feel i feel a little bad because I did say turtle but if we go with my correct answer then you're still winning 3-2 overall so yeah that you you still you've still got the lead here Yeah, yeah. But good job, Al. Good job. Thank you. Thank you Well, just for fun, just for fun, going to ask you my two extra questions. um
00:14:41
Speaker
Rachel has a crisis. What does Ross have?
00:14:46
Speaker
a picnic. um something specific in the, you know, Rachel's having... Oh, couscous? That's it. Yeah, I just like couscous. Yes. I like his delivery of that.
00:14:59
Speaker
And again... Wait, I've got two. I'll ask You've got two? Okay, go for it. Go for it. All right. What time were joey and bra ah Joey and Chandler supposed to get to the bar that Isaac was DJing at?
00:15:11
Speaker
Just saying the time made me feel tired. i think it was 10.30. It was 1030. Yeah. No, i'm i'm I'm already back home by 1030. Right. Yeah.
00:15:25
Speaker
Well, my very last bonus question for you is what office supply item does Ross accidentally pack back up into the picnic? A three-hole punch. Indeed. Indeed.
00:15:36
Speaker
And then what's the name of the lady that's at Rachel's work with her?
00:15:42
Speaker
That was the question that I had for you that I had to delete. I believe it's Sophie. Yes. Nice. yes Okay. Yes. And I meant to try and pay attention to see... I think we we we meet we've met Sophie before, right? Uh-huh. Yeah. yeah i was I was fairly sure we'd heard her name before.
00:16:05
Speaker
Yeah. um Or is it later on when Joanna makes an appearance? I don't know, but... um yeah i don't ah yeah Yeah, because she's the one that Joanna is so ugly to all the time. Yes, yes.
00:16:19
Speaker
I wonder if Sophie is who took Mark's place.
00:16:24
Speaker
It's a very good point. I think so. It must be. I'm thinking so. Yeah. Yeah. Must be. Well, let's get into this episode, shall we? Let's see. We start off in the girls' apartment. Joey's going to eat a whole jar of olives for no real reason. He's just set himself a challenge.
00:16:43
Speaker
Although he owe Monica that $2.95. Yeah. um Phoebe runs in. I do quite like that the coincidentally that this was one of our questions on a French trivia night that we did at Miss Angeline's. You know where does Phoebe give out free massages to help the world peace or something? um mean It was i outside the UN. Bodies add peace. Make peace. What is it?
00:17:07
Speaker
What does she say? I think bodies at peace make peace. i think I think so. I think I think you're right. I think that's how her her her philosophy behind doing this. It's a good thing. She's spreading some joy in the world, I think. yeah But she's met a guy that she thinks is awfully cute.
00:17:24
Speaker
And she's trying to figure out what country he's from. um And Monica doesn't have an atlas, but she has a globe. But it is the tiniest of globes and a pencil sharpener.
00:17:38
Speaker
Dual purpose. Exactly. I do feel that's something I'd sort of forgotten about that or those you know from my childhood that doesn't exist anymore is novelty pencil sharpeners.
00:17:50
Speaker
They do still exist though. Do they? Okay. They do because George has one that we got at the Alamo and it's a canon.
00:18:02
Speaker
So he can't take it to school but it's a cool thing he's got. Good for him. good I'm glad they still exist because I remember having a little globe one and few other bits and pieces.
Phoebe's Character and World Peace
00:18:14
Speaker
i At the book fair, there's always the nose one where you put your pencil up the nose and sharpen it.
00:18:24
Speaker
Yeah, forgot. I hadn't thought about a good pencil sharpener in a while. Yeah, because those are always terrible. We've come a long way in the sharpening of pencils game.
00:18:38
Speaker
Yeah, the science and technology has has has progressed. yeah Right. ah chandler comes on in i guess he's bored he's just gonna he is gonna get out the house and go and gawk at and i quote the hot girl with the belly button ring down at the coffee place yes and we find out evidently he's already been there i suppose and i mean i thinking that yeah yes he has yeah because she says i haven't seen you since this morning Since this morning. So poor old chand la Chandler. Chandler's, I guess, going through a slightly lonely phase in life. um Because we we go over to the coffee place.
00:19:20
Speaker
um Chandler and Joey are in line and unfortunately they end up or they they're going to end up in Isaac's line um but the Isaac's he knows what's going on and just basically says something like those two guys who've got a crush on you yeah are here again I think this is where Chandler says like oh that hurt us like I quite like that line you know it was a shot to the heart Isaac's cut them down um yeah that I like Isaac we see him we see him again i guess i guess it'll be next week's episode without spoiling anything we see him I like him I like this character just kind of kind of wacky his big hair yeah but like so just like straight forward you know what I mean like
00:20:17
Speaker
Like, it if it's coming out of Isaac's mouth, it's the truth. Exactly. He's got and no filter, no nonsense Isaac. Yeah. I like this guy. But obviously cool dude. He's DJing and he works at a copy store. Like, that's probably a cool dude.
00:20:35
Speaker
Yeah, he's got a certain style about him. His his big hair. like Like, all of it. Yeah. yeah I like this character a lot. Yeah. Yeah, we're fans of Isaac over here. um And then Chloe invites them to watch Isaac DJing at the Philly. um And Chandler again, rock on. Even for the 90s, I guess that was dated.
00:21:04
Speaker
He's just not helping himself. yeah well but And nobody rock on. like Yeah. the Rock on. That was my thought. that That thing isn't that kind of like...
00:21:17
Speaker
you know that's like hanggging hanging loose or something yes stick or something like that. It's not rocking on. Yeah, um yeah my brother does that all the time.
00:21:29
Speaker
Oh, does he? Well, good for him. Yeah, he Good for him. Yeah, he does. We end up outside. This is where we start to... We meet well Phoebe, and she's with Sergei and the translator. I don't think we know his name yet. I forgot. We do find out what it is.
00:21:45
Speaker
It's Misha. Misha, thank you. we I think we find that out later on. um I believe... Sorry, my daughter just she tried to FaceTime, did Macy. Um...
00:21:58
Speaker
Let me just let her know. I can't answer the phone right now. Done. um They're walking outside and I quite like this concept of, you know, Sarge. It's just the translate. I think it's funny.
00:22:10
Speaker
The way he kind of sticks his head right up in their business and kind of back in translating. Yeah. taking his job very seriously. He does. i mean, he's then what he's a translator for an ambassador. It's a big deal, I think. um It did get me thinking that we do, I did dig into this, as did Kate. um They're literally just talking gibberish. It sounds Slavic, it sounds Russian, but they're just, it's not a real language at all. But I was thinking, is there a language you would love to be able to speak that you don't?
Language Learning Aspirations
00:22:44
Speaker
Like if you could snap your fingers and speak a language fluently.
00:22:50
Speaker
You know what? Yeah. Yeah. I would like to be able to speak, man, I go between German and Mandarin because like,
00:23:08
Speaker
Spanish and Italian and, you know, they're very, like, they're all Latin based, right? Yeah. So if I could just snap my fingers and know one, I would want it to be one that, like, is one that is crazy to learn. Like, you know?
00:23:29
Speaker
That's very much my school of thought when I was thinking about this. um I speak no Spanish and it's one of my big regrets is not learning Spanish because of where we live. It'd be very useful.
00:23:40
Speaker
Yeah. But if I could bypass the whole learning curve, I think it would be either Mandarin or Japanese because it would be so difficult to learn.
00:23:51
Speaker
Yeah. It'd be very cool to be able to speak those. My dad and I took a Mandarin class whenever I was pregnant with maybe Fred.
00:24:05
Speaker
And um we took a Mandarin class and it was so hard. Yeah. And I can just say like maybe four phrases and that's it. Four more than most of us.
00:24:23
Speaker
and But it's so just, there's no way to ground yourself to make it make sense. Right. You know? um So, yeah.
00:24:38
Speaker
Yeah. But my dad was, ah my dad was, he worked in an international business for a long time. And they did a lot of business. It was whenever we very first started doing a whole lot of business with, um,
00:24:53
Speaker
China. And so he was like, you know, it would be great to know some Mandarin for whenever I'm going to these business centers and whatever, because, you know, it Americans are viewed as, you know, because we only speak one language.
00:25:11
Speaker
Right. And so i was like found a community college, and i was like, you could take it here. And he was like, okay. And I was like, I would like to take it too. I bet, yeah. That's fun thing to do. We went every week and took our class. And, you know, every once in a while we'll be all like, ni hao, ni hao, ni baba. That's my dad. I love that. love that you guys did that together. I think that's really cool.
00:25:40
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. That was a good time. Well, they're outside Phoebe. you know They're walking along and they're kind of flirting. And they end up outside Phoebe's building. The translator ruins the moment. He's just doing his job, man. He's just doing his job. Exactly.
00:25:56
Speaker
That is what he is there for. um and But we go up to the girl's apartment and Phoebe tells Monica the translator's kind of getting in the way. And I think at that point, ah well, no, Ross comes in first. He's got flowers for Rachel. It's their anniversary.
00:26:12
Speaker
um Am I right in saying it's six months? Or am i do we not know? In my head, it was six months. I wasn't sure if they ever said. Oh, I don't know.
00:26:24
Speaker
Yeah. I've got nothing to base that in, I don't think. But in my head, it was six months anniversary. Oh, how stupid. How stupid that this ended up being such a thing for... Okay.
00:26:39
Speaker
That's... Oh, my God. Maybe it says somewhere else, or maybe they said last week we've been... Maybe maybe they did say last week we've been dating six months. I'm not sure. Wow.
00:26:51
Speaker
We'll need to dig into that. This is so stupid then. a guy I hate Ross. I hate Ross. may come as shocking revelation to our listeners. Whoa, calm down, everybody.
00:27:04
Speaker
Do you know that Laura, she she messaged me this week because she had posted a thing about hating on Richard. and And so I was like, no.
00:27:18
Speaker
oh we We're but high fans of Richard. yeah she But she is very strong, very strongly dislikes Richard. Has very strong feelings about it.
00:27:32
Speaker
And I'm like, no. um I feel that way about Ross. And she's like, oh, yeah, he does suck. But, and I'm like, no. There's no but. There is no but. How you think?
00:27:47
Speaker
ah He does show up for with flowers for Rachel today in this episode. but Because it is an anniversary and maybe it's a six month. ah that
00:28:00
Speaker
Monica informs him that Rachel is working late. In fact, she's going to be working all night. no oh No, Monica doesn't tell him that. no money oh no Oh, that's right. Monica just says to call or something. because he starts freaking out. He starts freaking out. She's like, look, the extent of my and my knowledge is this note.
00:28:24
Speaker
Call Rachel. Yeah. So, no. That's right. and so she calls and Rachel's in a panic because of this shipping, whatever it was, shipping emergency that she has and Ross is frustrated, which is, you're you're allowed to be frustrated. we'll We'll discuss the unhinged nonsense that comes shortly.
00:28:47
Speaker
He's disappointed. um And then Phoebe asks Monica if she'll go on basically a double date because the translator's getting in the way. You know how a translator just gets in the way. um Yeah. And then they talk about Spackleback Larry. don't call you yeah backled back three that was gonna be a question for you but i knew that you would have heard that line really well because it's so funny it is funny yes uh it's so well done i love that so many of her friends throughout the this whole series have unusual names um like last week what was it last week with the big the guy with the big fish um
00:29:31
Speaker
bla hu v let just vlad with the big fish yeah you know like just just these these names that make you think what's the story yeah because there's also the the a homeless guy that oh i don't remember and there were six shooters somebody yeah there's all these random names Yes.
00:29:53
Speaker
Yes. I love it. We go over to Central Park. Joey and Chandler, they're waiting to go to the club. where they They're about to go, but it's 4.30. And, you know, that's a little early. It's at least six hours before they were told to show up at 10.30. And then I was trying to think how to phrase this, because this is a family-friendly podcast over here at the Purple Door. They they kind of have an awkward discussion about what would happen if Chloe was into both of them at the same time.
00:30:25
Speaker
Oh, can you hear me all right? Yeah, yeah. Yeah, okay, good, good, good. um You know, they they I'm not sure where i cut off, but they were there. They were about to leave, but then they realized it's 4.30. Six hours early they would be. So they sit back down and then they discuss. I was just saying it's a family friendly podcast. What would they do if Chloe was interested in both of them?
00:30:49
Speaker
And no real conclusion is drawn other than the fact they both get ooged out and rightly so. Yes. um Which is so stupid because i just went back and looked at the conversation that she had with them and the fact that They got hung up on that one and it turned into a whole conversation.
00:31:14
Speaker
Come on, guys. Come on. Indeed. Yeah, there's no need for that. um we We go back up to Rachel's office. um She's ordered i've written a variety of bikinis that I guess didn't quite show up or something happened with that order.
00:31:32
Speaker
um Ross shows up with dinner. And I think in certain situations, this could be a romantic gesture, but he should have read the room.
00:31:43
Speaker
And it's it's not a good move in this situation. It's not. It's not. You definitely made it all about you. Yeah. um If she was stuck at work in different circumstances, ah you know, where it wasn't stressful, she just for some reason had to be there waiting on a delivery.
00:32:04
Speaker
or something, then that could that could be one thing, but read the room. This is a high stress situation and you're going to make it worse. yeah um Yeah, without a doubt. But he brings dinner. He starts to prepare it with the loudest equipment known to men. He's grinding pepper.
00:32:21
Speaker
And the look she gives him. The look she gives him. Yes. Wow. If looks could kill, like Ross would have been like wrong. I have had that look recently. yeah.
00:32:39
Speaker
What we've discovered is, because it's been a while since Kate and i have either had a baby of our own, our children are grown up, but we have our granddaughter, Lenny. And what we have noticed is when Lenny is asleep at the house, how loud everything seems.
00:32:56
Speaker
yeah Including me. including me like i will like I'll just walk through to the kitchen, get something, and then walk back out. and There's something about a baby being asleep in the house. Magnifies everything I do, and other people, but I do tenfold.
Ross and Rachel: Work Disruptions
00:33:11
Speaker
Tenfold. um It's interesting. But Ross, is he is just being loud. He sets fire to the flowers. um And Rachel basically tells him to get out at this point. yeah He needs to leave.
00:33:26
Speaker
Okay, I was going to ask you about this line whenever she's on the phone and then she's like, I've got to call you back. Yes. I've got to shimp. Okay, I'm glad you brought this up because Kate informed me. Did that mean anything at all to you?
00:33:44
Speaker
Kate literally looked at me and said, does that line mean anything to you? and I was like, no, is that just a term for an idiot or something? And she's like, no, that's one of the three stooges. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. I had no idea.
00:33:57
Speaker
Okay. and And so I thought it was weird. i And that's that's exactly where my brain went, was where Kate's was. is that That's one of the Larry, kit ah larry wait, Harry, Curly, Mo, and then Shimp.
00:34:16
Speaker
Shimp is the other stooge, right? Right. And ah I can't remember it was, but there's a saying and I was like, I've literally never heard that saying in my entire life. But they say like, you've got shimp or you're a shimp.
00:34:35
Speaker
And it's whenever you're a stand in. Okay, I didn't know that. So there's like a double meaning there, but it it doesn't make sense with the other meaning. But I was like, I've never heard that.
00:34:49
Speaker
But it's ah I guess they use that whenever somebody is like, they're making a movie or a show and then somebody dies and they use a stand-in to look like that person.
00:35:02
Speaker
and But that has nothing to do with the way that she used it here because she used it here as I have an idiot. I have a stooge. Right. One of the three stooges. But I thought that was really interesting.
00:35:15
Speaker
that That's a saying um also for like a stand in or somebody like that. yeah I interpreted it before Kate let me know. It's like almost like a chump.
00:35:29
Speaker
you knowre Just sort of a generic term for somebody who's acting a bit ridiculous. yeah Well, she yeah I ended up on a website with misheard like misheard lines And what this was one of the lines that was brought up a whole lot in Friends. Because a lot of people thought she said, I've got a chimp.
00:35:56
Speaker
And so they thought like they were just like she was making an excuse for all the noise and the ridiculousness. and But it was shimp.
00:36:07
Speaker
And it was because of a stooge. And they also said that people who did not grow up in the United States often wouldn't have even given that another thought.
00:36:20
Speaker
Right. Yeah, indeed. And I didn't. I always thought, like I said, ah a synonym for chump or something. Yeah. Well, it's a kind of. Yeah. Yeah.
00:36:31
Speaker
um Yeah, so Ross ends up leaving, right? He kind of packs everything up, even in three-hole punch. um And I think, do we just go right over to the girl's apartment in the next scene where Ross and Rachel have ah have a fight?
00:36:46
Speaker
Yeah. um Yeah, because he's sitting there eating at her house. That's right. And I think Ross's main argument is that she never has time for him. um you know And he doesn't appear to respect her new job.
00:37:03
Speaker
um And, like, again, I think Ross has a ah ah valid point in the sense it's okay to feel, hey, I feel a bit neglected because you're working all the time. But, of course, it's how he handles the situation is the is the main...
00:37:23
Speaker
thing. Yes. But let's go back to that other scene. Whenever he's in there and she's on the phone and she's like this and everything and he's like, you don't have 10 minutes?
00:37:38
Speaker
And what kind of pushed her over the edge is she's like, no, I don't. So then he turns around and pulls Sophie into the room. That's right. Yes. And then that's whenever she's like,
00:37:52
Speaker
is She cuts him off and she yells at him. And then he's like, don't yell at me. This is the most I've seen you all week. Yeah. So again, it's been eight a week, a week.
00:38:06
Speaker
Kate and I will both have weeks where we're just super busy. That, that not don't get too upset about that. That happens. And you're bringing in Sophie. Even if Sophie was her boss, she,
00:38:17
Speaker
That's still, don't do that. But she's not. is at Sophie is the the new girl in the office. No disrespect to Sophie. But bringing her in in any capacity is is weird and wrong. andre Yeah.
00:38:34
Speaker
yeah yeah Yeah. Well, any time that you're fighting or or having a disagreement or something and you pull in somebody else,
00:38:45
Speaker
That's just asking for trouble. That's just asking for issues because yeah. Yeah. The issue is not with that person. They don't want in your drama.
00:38:58
Speaker
Yeah. No, that's, that's a good way to make somebody feel super uncomfortable and awkward. um Okay. So I'm sorry. no no, no, no. You're good. No, no. We needed to touch on that. Cause yeah, again, that's,
00:39:13
Speaker
I think at times Ross has valid points, but they're completely overshadowed with inappropriate behavior and how he handles them. um Like,
00:39:26
Speaker
Yeah, I really like Rachel's explanation of why she's so busy. you know like it's i mean, she doesn't need to explain it. She's busy her job. She's busy at her job. She doesn't owe anyone an explanation. But the fact she kind of taps into, it's the first time I'm doing something I care about and I'm good at it.
00:39:44
Speaker
Like, again, she doesn't need to support her arguments at all, but it's a really nice, you know, yeah you know like, this is really important to me, to me to her.
00:39:57
Speaker
And, again, Ross is making it about him when it's not about him. She's just busy. It's not like she's choosing to go and hang out with lots of other friends and not spend time with him. She's busy at work.
00:40:11
Speaker
um Right. Ross suggested they should just cool off and go get some frozen yogurt or something. Right, and it's not about him.
00:40:23
Speaker
Right, because... Yeah. he yeah I'm sorry. You're quite alright. yeah
00:40:33
Speaker
But um whenever he's he starts off and he's like, I know you were stressed. And she's like, no, I was going to let you apologize to me. Like you shouldn't have even come down there.
00:40:45
Speaker
And then he's, you know, oh what a ah what a jerk I am because I wanted to do something nice for you. Well, no, you were a jerk. You were. it was a jerk thing to do. And it was.
00:41:00
Speaker
Yeah, it was terrible. Terrible. Very narrow-sighted. um Yeah, taking dinner to your significant other at work could be a romantic, lovely gesture.
00:41:13
Speaker
But one degree of looking at at the situation and reading the room and understanding what's going on, he's an intelligent guy, would tell you this is not the time and the place to do such a thing.
00:41:25
Speaker
but he he kind of bypassed all of that um and this is where we get into the the sort of the the great debate of friends you know he says we should take a break go get some just get something to eat and she's like no a break from us yeah because then he threw in Mark oh that's right Mark again now Mark again and then it's like oh my god like why would this have anything to do with him?
00:41:57
Speaker
He doesn't even work there anymore. He doesn't work there. He's got nothing to do with anything. Now I think this is no more than a coincidence. I think Ross is in the wrong for the way he keeps bringing up Mark all this jealousy.
00:42:12
Speaker
He is kind of right in the end. mark mar is Mark's all for Rachel. he In fact, and later on, spoiler alert, he does ask her out. Mm-hmm.
00:42:24
Speaker
So Ross, I still think Ross is just jealous, even though, because yeah, trust Rachel at this point. that Even if Mark does have feelings for i think Rachel mentions that in the last episode. Or Monica does. you know Even if Mark does have a crush on Rachel, you've got to trust the person you're with.
00:42:45
Speaker
But yeah, he brings up Mark. But he ends up leaving after Rachel says, maybe we should take a break. Or a break from us. A break from us. And not even a word.
00:42:59
Speaker
He just slams the door and leaves. Yeah. And i was like, dang. Yeah, it's... ah Yeah, he doesn't know how to deal with these situations at all, I don't think. um Ross goes straight down to the Philly.
00:43:15
Speaker
um Chloe apparently knows him because he comes in and gets stuff for the museum done all the time. You know, we say we can't do that, and he says you need to, so we make it happen, and they call it the Ross.
00:43:28
Speaker
oh Yeah. you know, it's, i once she said, yeah, calls him the dinosaur guy, but she knows his name because they call making things 400% bigger than Ross. um So I think that's kind of funny. And I like the way she introduces him to Chandler and Joey. Yeah. As her friend. Yeah. It's just kind of fantastic.
00:43:50
Speaker
um We bounce over to the restaurant. um I don't know what restaurant this is, but Monica says she can speak a little French and gets great service at cafe Maurice. um The translator and the Monica are really hitting it off. Yeah.
00:44:07
Speaker
But that's causing a shift in the dynamic because then Phoebe can't really talk to her date, so she's frustrated with Monica. In fact, she asked her to meet her behind the menu, I think. Uh-huh.
00:44:20
Speaker
it's kind of it's It's kind of fun. I like this this different dynamic of the, you know, the... they're trying to figure all this out like how to be um yeah what do you was it misha or mishka mishka something like that his name mis and mish oh yeah see now i don't know misha is what i was saying we'll go with misha i'm not sure what it was um but i i quite like that yeah just the just the dynamic of all the characters in this scene um We're back up in the girls' apartment. This is where Mark calls Rachel. I'm assuming it's late.
00:44:55
Speaker
um It has to be. It's after 10.30. Right. So what, A, what's he calling for? B, I think he's being pushy. I think he's a jerk.
00:45:06
Speaker
And this doesn't excuse any of Ross's behavior. It's a separate thing from the way Ross has acted. You don't invite yourself over like that.
00:45:17
Speaker
I, I, to me, this backs up Ross's argument in a sense that Mark is after something here. Um, Again, not excusing Ross's behavior, but i Mark was fine before. Mark wasn'tt mark has a girlfriend.
00:45:35
Speaker
I mean, maybe he doesn't now, but he did a week ago. Right. Yeah, not not a big fan of this. oh ah so and But we end up going back to the Philly and Chandler is telling Ross to call Rachel. See, and my thought that...
00:45:52
Speaker
but he talks about wanted to ask you this how are you about this whole because you should need to wait an an hour after you eat before you swim and chandler are at the bar right that's right they're there yeah so it's after 10 30 and he's calling expecting her to not be home like but why wouldn't monica be home and And then it's like, I'm going to get 20 soon. I don't know. It's just, it's all very weird. And like my initial thought was that he saw Ross out.
00:46:30
Speaker
yeah that's a good That's an interesting thought. There is nothing to base that on. Absolutely nothing. ah But it's and so interesting though.
00:46:43
Speaker
because it seemed very calculated. It did. if To me, again, it felt just, yeah, pushy and not appropriate. And kind of basic again, just telling Rachel what you're going to do. This is what we're going to do. And rate Rachel doesn't need that at any point in her life. But particularly, she's dealing with that with Ross and then for Mark to do the same thing, I think is not good.
00:47:09
Speaker
Right. But Ross ends up at the Philly and Chandler really tells him that he should call Rachel. You know, this is Ross. This is you two. This is Ross and Rachel.
00:47:19
Speaker
Give her a call. I can't remember quite how it comes up. I wanted to ask you your feelings about the whole after you've had lunch, you need to wait X amount of time before swimming.
00:47:31
Speaker
No. Yeah. no I'm not sure if there's any scientific... and old yeah No. That's an old wives tale. It's not true. There's no scientific basis for that.
00:47:42
Speaker
Right. um But it was always a rule whenever I was a kid. Right. And, you know, the beauty of the internet and just all the information that we have at our fingertips.
00:47:54
Speaker
Indeed. You know, but no, it's the same as like if you... run and you get a stitch in your side like it it one's not necessarily related to the other but yeah no no no that's a vice I didn't google it but I assumed it was an old wives tale of some sort well I did not google it for this episode but I have googled it in the past because this is just a random piece of knowledge that I needed
00:48:28
Speaker
Right, that you that you needed in your life. yeah I just needed it Yeah. There you go. We go back up to the girls' apartment. Rachel is talking to Mark. He has far too much food for just himself.
00:48:41
Speaker
Oh, right. Yeah, you know, again, he's being, I think Mark is is sleazy. He eats Chinese food in the middle of the night. Like, New York is a weird place, man.
00:48:54
Speaker
It's weird place. Wild. Wild. It is. It's funny. I was talking to Kate's brother there's many months ago. um They used to live in Manhattan. They're now outside um in the town where Kate grew up in New Jersey. um He did say that the of all the things that New York has, and it has everything, he says when you live there, you do get a mindset of absolutely everything is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
00:49:21
Speaker
He's like, you want to steak dinner at nine o'clock on a Sunday morning? It's available. You decide you just want you know to play tennis at four o'clock on a Tuesday morning. It's available. It's available at midnight. Everything is available somewhere in the city, all hours of the day, day and night. And it's ah it's a mindset shift.
00:49:42
Speaker
um So, yeah, he he's brought enough Chinese food for both of them. Again, just bad vibes from Mark for me. Ross calls. He's trying to to make this better.
00:49:56
Speaker
um Rachel picks up the phone and... And he's such a... Sorry, go ahead. No, go ahead. I don't believe him. I don't believe him.
00:50:08
Speaker
You don't believe Ross? Ross? No, I don't believe Mark. Because Mark knows yeah he's on the phone. Yep. Mark is being calculated and deliberate and causing trouble here.
00:50:22
Speaker
Even if he wasn't, like I was trying to think, what if Mark had absolutely no interest in Rachel? You would excuse yourself out the room. You would just be quiet out of courtesy and respect.
00:50:34
Speaker
He is deliberately sabotaging their relationship.
00:50:39
Speaker
100% yes like if you were sitting here in the room with me and Joseph called not because you'd had a fight but you know just like you were just like chatting about what's for dinner I would be quiet because that's just being courteous because two people are on the phone he is deliberately trying to sabotage what's going on the phone yeah who else is calling Rachel at that time of night it's probably Ross because they've had had a fight um right Yeah. um I think my mind went to a place of, is does Rachel hold responsibility for any of this?
Rachel's Vulnerability and Decision-Making
00:51:15
Speaker
And I don't think she does. But, you know, she kind of, you know, should she have said, no, Mark, you're not coming in? But was she not realizing that maybe he had ulterior motives? Was she in a vulnerable place? I don't know. I don't know how I feel about, I think Ross has lots of faults here. I think Mark is kind of sleazy.
00:51:32
Speaker
I'm not sure how I feel about Rachel in this situation. Yeah, i am I don't know. it yeah i don't know. I want to give her the benefit of the doubt, but I really can't because I'm sorry. You let a man into your apartment in the middle of the night. hey yeah yeah that's not very You just pretended like you weren't even home.
00:51:58
Speaker
You could have just pretended like you weren't home and not answered the door. Yeah, and it's yeah all these things. Yeah, I'm very much on Rachel's side in all of this, but I think she she made a couple of missteps here.
00:52:12
Speaker
um Yeah, yeah, she she could have handled things perhaps a little differently. um Speaking of handling things differently, Ross ends up in the bar and...
00:52:26
Speaker
well yeah ross just hangs up on ross hears mark's voice um he's like fine got it chloe gets him a drink and chloe another character with a massive uh misstep she's like oh you married because that's fine not exactly high caliber of character is chloe um not not a fan of chloe here um you know Again, it's not her responsibility to say, no, that's Ross or whoever else, but still, no, not a fan of Chloe at all.
00:53:01
Speaker
um We bounce back over to the restaurant. Phoebe and Sergey are annoyed right that Monica and the translator are having such a good time. And Sergey and Misha, Mishka, whatever his name is, they end up fighting. And Mishka just quits. How you can quit a diplomatic role like that. You're working for your government and you're halfway around the world working.
00:53:25
Speaker
But, you know, that's the story is he just quits on the spot. And he's got coupons. He's got diplomatic coupons for the Rainbow Room, which I don't even know what that means. Diplomatic coupons, but he's got them. yeah I was like, well, wait, we've talked about the Rainbow Room before. We have. Yeah. And I just understand a coupon. you know Maybe if you buy a drink, you get one free. But what a diplomatic coupon is, I don't know. But kind of love I love the line because it sounds very fancy.
00:53:57
Speaker
you know Yes. I think that's a ah great line in there. um And she says, and then Monica's like, my guy has diplomatic coupons. Your guy can't even say coupons. And then they leave. Right.
00:54:12
Speaker
i I do love it. It's like so unnecessary. Like you don't need this let these lines, but they're so funny. Like I'm so glad put them in about these coupons. um ross's Ross is sad sack Ross at the at the Philly. Listening to With or Without You by youtube which is not the first time um that this song has been in in Friends. Yeah.
00:54:38
Speaker
Oh, complete side note, but I'm going to segue completely. And I think I knew this, but I'd forgotten. Speaking of music and friends, I was listening to a live... ah Stephen Page used to be the the lead singer of the band, the Bare Naked Ladies, who were huge in the ninety s Still popular, good band. One of my favorite bands of all times. He left in the early 2000s to pursue solo stuff.
00:55:02
Speaker
But still... um has a good relationship with the band and all that. en Anyway, on Instagram, um he advertises that I think once a month he does a live at home with Stephen Page where he plays music for a couple of hours.
00:55:19
Speaker
And I joined this last one because he was playing music from two of my favorite Bare Naked Ladies albums. en Anyway, back on this long tangent, they were talking about the song Shoebox, which does appear in the background of one of Monica's parties.
00:55:34
Speaker
They're playing the song Shoebox by Bare Naked Ladies. That was meant to be, it was written to be the theme song for Friends. Like they asked the Bare Naked Ladies and other bands to write theme songs and then they were going to choose one.
00:55:48
Speaker
They obviously went with the Rembrandt song, but they loved this song, so they wanted to make sure it got a nod. It got put in an episode somewhere as like a thank you to the band. um With or Without You was not written, I don't believe, for Friends in any way, but it was considered, you know, it was another song that they looked at um yeah just like shiny happy people with r rem that is the theme song on the on the original pilot when it was called friends like us and so all these songs kind of get dropped into an episode as as like a nod to the fact they could have been the you know they were considered or something for the theme song um
00:56:30
Speaker
So we yeah, With or Without You by U2 is playing, i think we've discussed U2 before. I've never understood the hype. I don't get it. yeah um Chloe kind of gets Ross. I mean, it's obviously a two-way street here, but she she makes the move on Ross by getting him onto the dance floor and goes to kiss
Turning Point: Ross and Chloe's Kiss
00:56:48
Speaker
him. And she kisses him back, or he kisses her back. um At this point, Rachel is trying to call Ross. Mark has left.
00:56:56
Speaker
um I assume she's kind of said, you need to leave. Like, I need to try and call Ross. Yeah. But Chloe's very much making the moves on Ross, but it's up to him to say no, and he doesn't.
00:57:10
Speaker
um i And that's kind of where this story gets left, because we end up in Central Park with Sergey playing Miss American Pie, or American Pie, right, on the guitar. Yeah.
00:57:24
Speaker
I cannot hear this song without is singing it in my head in his voice. His enthusiasm and gusto for the song I think is amazing. um Yes. I kind of love it. saying yeah yeah i'm ah I'm a big fan. Big fan of of the way he he's he's giving it. like It's like he's in a bar in a karaoke and he's had a couple to drink. He's giving it all he's got.
00:57:53
Speaker
um But we're left on this cliffhanger with with Ross and Chloe in the Philly and Rachel all alone in her apartment. um We'll see what happens with that next week. um how Let's see, what can we rank?
00:58:09
Speaker
How many copies? How many 400% copies would you make of this episode? yeah i think that's where we have to go. How many copies are we making of this episode? ah So I'm making eight and a half.
00:58:24
Speaker
Very nice. Very nice. Yeah. So that's eight 400%, so one 200% if we're going to get into it. There you go. I suppose. That is exactly correct.
00:58:36
Speaker
Yeah. I'm going with a solid eight. um Okay. You know, I think everyone knows this episode because it's where Ross and Rachel break up and the concept of them being on a break comes up Again, i just, I've forgotten about some of the other really funny,
00:58:51
Speaker
There's some funny stuff. I think there's a lot of meat on the bone in this episode. Lots of things to debate. yeah Ross's behavior, how Rachel reacts, Mark's behavior, Chloe's behavior.
00:59:02
Speaker
um I forgot how much I enjoyed the translator storyline. Yes. Giving massages out in front of the UN. n Yeah, all of that. that piece make peace That's right.
00:59:16
Speaker
Yes. e We get all one. Yeah, one of the scenes that got cut was ah Chandler, whenever Ross hangs up with Rachel and then he's walking across the dance floor and Chloe's with Joey and Chandler on the dance floor. And so then she's like, dinosaur guy. And then he's like, you know, I want a beer or I want a drink. And she's like, okay, two, you know?
00:59:42
Speaker
um And then it cuts over to Joey and Chandler and they're like, now we're just dancing with each other. And so they like, you're kind of like, and then they move with the crowd and keep dancing.
00:59:56
Speaker
I love it. You know, i and there's a lot of funny stuff and it's good. It's good. it's good You know, I am going to make an executive decision and I'm making mine eight and a half too.
01:00:10
Speaker
Now that we're talking, I just realized that I gave last week's an eight with Phoebe's X-Point, which I think this was a little better than that. had more to discuss. There was better writing. So I'm also going with a with eight and a half for this one, I think.
01:00:24
Speaker
Who is it? Your Gunther Central Park. Your Gunther Central Park. Where are you going with it? This is tough for me this week. Is it? Yeah. Mine's Rachel.
01:00:35
Speaker
Yours is Rachel. She makes ah some mistakes and stuff, but yeah, because I was going to say Monica because she is a real one, but yeah but no, it's it's Rachel and it's the same. It's her her growth as a character And being able to articulate kind of how she's feeling and what she's doing. And um yeah, I just, I like Rachel.
01:01:03
Speaker
I do. and We've talked about this already. I do love the bit how she, she does not have to justify how she, why she's busy and how she's feeling, but she does. And I just love that so much of her story is rooted in, in growth. Like you said, you know, growing where she was. um oddly i'm not going with rachel or monica i'm going with phoebe this week i i love okay yeah she's shes she's a charitable you know know the bodies at peace thing i love that i love the interaction with her and sergey i think it's very funny and there's something i love about the fact that she basically asked monica to meet behind the the uh the menus
Phoebe's Humor and Interactions
01:01:44

01:02:06
Speaker

The one with the morning after. i'm assuming it is. yeah Yes. well and I'm excited about this one because on my DVD, it's the one that has the commentary as well on the DVD. So I'll be able to like hear all of that. So I'm excited.

I am excited because I don't know that. So I am excited hear that. I must just say I posted on um i'm ah you know, in several friends Facebook groups, you know, posting on those places. um There's one called Friendspiration. And I just last night decided I'm going to post a poll.

Were they on a break? Yes or no? Just to get some some data for the podcast. 64% said they were on a break. And 34% no. I thought it would be even higher for they were on a break.
01:03:03
Speaker
Right. 64%. there was, don't maybe 100 votes because I just posted it last night. We're recording the next morning. Only 64% I thought was interesting.
01:03:16
Speaker
That is. Huh. Interesting. Well, sorry. Now that I'm reading that out loud, I've got that the wrong way around. Sorry. 64% said, yes, they were on a break, which means kind of, okay, what Ross is doing.
01:03:31

I thought more people would say, no, they weren't actually on a break. really I think so. I thought, and I'm not saying I necessarily believe that. I thought, cause my, my opinion's kind of in the middle.
01:03:44
Speaker
I think they are on a break, but that doesn't excuse what he did. Um, so I, maybe I should have added a third option there, um, to clarify, but yeah is yeah, it's better. It's better. It's better if you make it, if you have to choose and hop on a side.
01:04:04
Speaker
Yeah, that's kind of what I did. I was like, yeah, because if you start opening the door, then there's all sorts of gray areas. I've always wanted to get one of those doormats. Have you seen those doormats? They say, well, Ross and Rachel on a break. So the person who puts the Amazon package, I always wanted one of those. Yeah.
01:04:20
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, I thought that'd be a fun thing to get. Yeah. but Yeah, on Friendspiration on Facebook, 64%. And yes, they were on a break.
