Impact of Herbicides and Pesticides

00:00:00
Speaker
We'll start with herbicides and pesticides. So basically these are chemicals designed to kill living organisms. So is that not already a major red flag? How can something that's toxic to life of whatever form of life, how can that be benign to us, right? So these chemicals contaminate our environment on a colossal scale. We're talking about millions of kilograms or pounds of these being sprayed on crops worldwide every year, millions and millions.

History and Rise of Glyphosate

00:00:30
Speaker
You may have heard of glyphosate, this is the most prevalent herbicide, and here is a quote from another paper that I cite in my book. Glyphosate works synergistically with other factors such as insufficient sun exposure, dietary deficiencies in critical nutrients such as sulfur and zinc, and synergistic exposure to other xenobiotics whose detoxification is impaired by glyphosate.
00:00:54
Speaker
So this is a herbicide that has been around since the 60s, but its use increased dramatically in the 1990s as they basically created genetically modified crops that could tolerate being sprayed with glyphosate. So this is how glyphosate became such a prevalent herbicide on

Health Effects of Glyphosate

the market. And one of the main
00:01:13
Speaker
uh, ways that glyphosate harms us is it disrupts our gut bacteria, particularly the beneficial ones. So very briefly, I'll explain, um, what it does. So, uh, the way, the way glyphosate works is it inhibits an enzyme in plants, bacteria, and fungi that inhibits a process called the shikimate pathway. Now this shikimate pathway is used to produce the amino acids tyrosine, tryptophan and phenylalanine.
00:01:43
Speaker
Now, this is how glyphosate is used as a herbicide. It disrupts this process in pests in plants that are considered pests and they die. Now, when we eat crops that have glyphosate residue, that glyphosate can inhibit that same process in the gut microbiota. So why is that important? Well, these amino acids tyrosine, tryptophan and phenylalanine
00:02:13
Speaker
are important precursors for neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, melatonin, adrenaline, noradrenaline, also known as norepinephrine and epinephrine. Some of these are made in the gut by our bacteria. By disturbing our gut bacteria, it can disturb our whole bacterial gut microbiota balance, but it can also disturb their ability to create these neurotransmitters.
00:02:39
Speaker
So you can already see that you know so far that disturbed microbiota can cause us health problems. But when you don't just disturb the microbiota, but you potentially disturb the production of certain hormones and neurotransmitters that can have super wide ranging negative effects in

Research Limitations and Concerns

00:02:59
Speaker
the body.
00:02:59
Speaker
Of course, there's very little research being sponsored into finding the mechanisms with which glyphosate is harmful to us, because who would really fund this research? The companies that are producing this chemical, it would hurt their profits if we found out that it's toxic to humans, right? So they've done a lot to suppress this information coming out.
00:03:23
Speaker
But there is some research being done and some other mechanisms that are being proposed in which glyphosate can harm us include, it can bind to tissues to form neo antigens. So again, this can cause immune and autoimmune responses. It can interfere with sulfate metabolism. It can cause oxidative stress and it can potentially bind with zinc, iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese. So it can make them unavailable to the body, these nutrient minerals, right?
00:03:52
Speaker
Another thing that you should be aware of, and the reason this is important is glyphosate is sprayed on non-organic crops, so non-organically grown crops. And this will feed into the next

Carcinogenic Concerns and Organic Shift

00:04:06
Speaker
slide. But basically in 2015, an agency of the World Health Organization called the IARC, so the International Agency for Research on Cancer, they classified glyphosate as a probable human
00:04:21
Speaker
carcinogen. So what does this mean? If you're in the United States, you will find food products labeled USDA organic, or if you're in the European Union, you'll see this green label on the right on organically grown produce and basically products, right? So the most important thing is to start buying only organic food because organic agriculture, as I'll cover later,
00:04:47
Speaker
does not allow the use of herbicides pesticides of this kind of synthetic origin, right? So this is the most important takeaway from this kind of little section on glyphosate. Now moving on to pesticides, here's a quote from one paper I cite in my book.

Chlorpyrifos and Children's Health

00:05:01
Speaker
Children exposed to higher compared with lower chlorpyrifos levels were also significantly more likely to experience psychomotor development index and mental development index delays, attention problems,
00:05:14
Speaker
attention deficit hyperactivity disorder problems and pervasive developmental disorder problems at three years of age. So chlorpyrifos is a pesticide, right? So these researchers found that higher exposure in children to this particular pesticide was linked with mental development index delays, attention problems, ADHD, and pervasive developmental disorder problems at three years of age. So pretty shocking.

Autism Risks and Pesticides

00:05:43
Speaker
And another important reason, and I will be repeating this a lot in the rest of the course, another important reason to completely stay away from conventionally grown produce and other products. Certified organic is the only safe option. So some of the mechanisms of how pesticides may increase the risk of autism include developmental neurotoxicity, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and immune toxicity.
