Introduction and Mental Health Month Theme

00:00:33
Speaker
Hey there, folks. This is Derek from Bad Movies, Worst People. And nobody asked for this. Nobody probably cares, but I'm going to record it anyway because I did all this watching and research.
00:00:45
Speaker
So for Mental Health Month, which is May, May is Mental Health Awareness Month, we do our mental health... theme which is where each of the hosts gets to choose a movie that we call a mental health movie something you watch to wash out all the garbage you've been watching or to feel better or if you're having a shitty day whatever it may be we all get to choose one and then we have one that will be our schlock and load special which is where we do schlocky action And my choice for mental health was Michael Mann's heat.

Derek's Preparations: Michael Mann's Filmography

00:01:20
Speaker
I had something else chosen originally, but with the passing of Val Kilmer, I felt that this was good. i was saving this one for later, but I won't be talking too much about heat today because we're going to have a full episode about that coming in May.
00:01:35
Speaker
What I did do to prepare because I'm crazy is I watched all of Michael Mann's theatrical movies, mostly chronological order.
00:01:47
Speaker
I did not watch Jericho Mile, which was his first TV movie or LA takedown, which is the TV movie that inspired heat. um I may watch it before we do the episode, but I haven't decided yet.

Film Critiques: From 'Last of the Mohicans' to 'Ali'

00:02:02
Speaker
But I watched all of his movies and I ranked them according to my preferences. so I'm gonna talk to you guys a little bit about each of those movies and my rankings. So we'll start at the bottom.
00:02:14
Speaker
Michael Mann has 12 theatrical releases, ah Heat being one of them, which again is not in this ranking because i it's been probably two years since I've watched it.
00:02:26
Speaker
It definitely ranks somewhere in the top three. The bottom of my list is probably his most successful movie. I didn't look into the research or anything, but it won him some Oscars. um And I think it kind of got him the permission and funding to be able to make things like Heat and Collateral and so on.
00:02:47
Speaker
ah Because his early few movies, you can tell, are much lower budget. But it's Last of the Mohicans. This is the one I have rated the lowest. Someone's going to at me. Someone's going to get mad at me.
00:02:59
Speaker
But 1992's Last of the Mohicans starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Madeline Stowe, ah West Studi. It is a war-torn, like, colonial America time.
00:03:13
Speaker
ah There's the, what is known as the French and french and Indian War. I know that's not the correct word. That's the name of the war. Don't again, don't come at me for that.
00:03:24
Speaker
um Basically, it's the British, the French and the Native Americans fighting. The Americans are in there and it's before the American Revolution. I gave this one two stars.
00:03:37
Speaker
It's this time frame of film is not for me in particular. ah My co-host Jack is very upset that I didn't like this movie.
00:03:48
Speaker
When I told him about it, he started doing the score. He started humming and, you know, orchestrally directing the score while we were at work. um I admit maybe I need to try it again at a future date. I was a little tired when I was watching it. I was having trouble staying awake, but also the movie was just not that good.
00:04:07
Speaker
I mean, not that thrilling for me. ah Daniel Day-Lewis was great. Wes Studi was great. But despite the movie looking good and being shot well, it was just boring to me.
00:04:21
Speaker
So I'm not going to go too much into it. I'm not going to rip on it. I know it's a favorite of a lot of people. And I know this is a bad movie podcast, so I should be able to make fun of stuff. But honestly, it just, I think it just wasn't for me.
00:04:35
Speaker
It might be good to someone else. Number 10, I have rated a movie, which I did enjoy, um but it had its flaws, is Miami Vice from 2006, starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell.
00:04:51
Speaker
And Michael Mann, a lot of people don't know, was a producer on Miami Vice, the TV show. so I feel like maybe this was a passion project of his. He wanted to bring it to modern day, give make it a little more gritty, <unk> cetera.
00:05:05
Speaker
I'm sure the success of the two bad boys movies didn't hurt because it's like, hey, white guy, black guy, cops, partners, Miami. And somebody was just like, sign me up. This is not bad boys. It's a much more serious movie.
00:05:20
Speaker
I had a pretty good time with this one. Three and a half stars. I give it a recommend. ah It's not his best, but it's not his worst. um I've seen it once before and I remember liking it and I still enjoyed it.
00:05:32
Speaker
Maybe not quite as much as the first time. It's Michael Mann was an early and early adopter of digital photography and I'm a big proponent of film.
00:05:44
Speaker
But if you can use digital photography and make it look good, like really, really care, that I'm in and that's what he does here um the script isn't great um chemistry between some of the characters isn't great I don't know that Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell actually care about each other but what I did really enjoy is this movie was told very visually um you could watch it like as a silent film um just with the score and still understand 100% what's going on the script isn't that important
00:06:19
Speaker
Um, everything is just passed on really visually. It's really strikingly done in that sense. One of the better digital films that I've seen.
00:06:33
Speaker
If you watched it as a silent film without the score, tell you one thing, big plus no audio slave. Again, come at me you don't if you love audio slave, but this movie and his other one from this era collateral both have a really weird audio slave needle drop and I don't know but that was number 10.
00:06:54
Speaker
ah Number nine ah was nominated for some awards. It may have won. Again, I didn't really research this. It's just kind of on the cuff, off the cuff. ah two thousand one's Ali, starring Will Smith.
00:07:06
Speaker
Never watched this one because at that time I was already in Will Smith burnout mode. Like I had had enough of him. um i don't think he makes a good movie star leading man.
00:07:21
Speaker
um I never really have. I mean, I i like I really like Men in Black, um Independence Day, but Independence Day has Jeff Goldblum. And so Men in Black has Tommy Lee Jones and Rip Torn.
00:07:32
Speaker
So um and I'm not if you if you listen to the podcast, you know, i'm not a big sports fan. I don't follow sports. I don't really know a lot about Muhammad Ali other than like some of the big moments, some few of which are featured in this film.
00:07:47
Speaker
um I've seen video footage of him and the way he spoke and things like that. And Will Smith tries to reach that. And I thought he did pretty good job. Friend of the show, Classy Alcoholic, ah strongly disagreed with that. He said that it sounded like Will Smith was doing an impersonation.
00:08:06
Speaker
um And I'm going to take his word for that because the classy alcoholic is our boxing friend. He knows all about boxing. He knows the history of boxing. He's a big boxing guy. He has a boxing podcast, by the way, called the Mixed Company Podcast, which I know you can find on at least Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

Derek's Picks: 'The Keep' to 'Public Enemies'

00:08:23
Speaker
Go check that out. Him and his co-host know a lot. They have a lot of knowledge. They talk about movies once in a while, too. They did talk about Ali on an early episode. But um Michael Mann has two biographical films in this series, Ali and Ferrari, and they're both interesting and that they aren't telling, like, here's him when he was a kid and here's him as successful and here's him when he was failing and here's him when he's old and whatever.
00:08:47
Speaker
um They both focus on a particular period of time. This one is a little wider than Ferrari. It's over multiple years, but it's from his fight with Sonny Liston very earlier or much earlier in his career when he's still Cassius Clay up through the rumble in the jungle versus George Foreman.
00:09:08
Speaker
And I think Will Smith did a pretty good job. I think Jamie Foxx did an amazing job as his like I couldn't didn't quite catch what he was his brother or cousin or shitty friend that grew up with him something like that Giancarlo Esposito is there as his father which is really cool.
00:09:25
Speaker
um Some of his performance did drift in and out of the Ali voice especially when he's alone with Jada Pinkett Smith who plays his girlfriend for wife for a while. ah He started sounding more like Will Smith but Even though this seems like a one of the least man Michael Mann films because there's no flashy cars and gunfights and those things It still had his style.
00:09:49
Speaker
It was still really interesting Whitney Jack and I all watched it together and had a good time um That might have been part of the problem. We all watched it together Next up on my list but Number eight is The Keep, which was Michael Mann's second film from 1983. This isn't going to be a big commercial for people who don't pay me, but I have this really cool 4K from Vinegar Syndrome of The Keep.
00:10:19
Speaker
In this sweet like box with a book and everything. It's really nice. um I had never seen that. And I'd heard all these horror stories about how bad it was.
00:10:31
Speaker
I thought it was really fucking cool. I don't have a title card from that, but I did have the movie here so you can see The Keep. um It's a really cool science fiction fantasy kind of thing, which is really weird for Michael Mann.
00:10:44
Speaker
um I gave this one, again, three and a half stars, like the last two. i wanted to give it four stars. because i really had a good time uh it's to this really wide framing great staging great uh framing of the shots uh music a score by tangerine dream which is great uh i thought really cool special effects a lot of you know obviously practical stuff and then some of the uh optical special effects the drawn on kind of stuff uh i thought it was really cool and the vibe is really great but
00:11:16
Speaker
The narrative itself is really disjointed and incoherent um And that's famously from um studio cuts I really would have liked to seen Michael Mann's actual vision for this But I mean you've got a very young Ian McKellen, Jurgen Prochnow, Scott Glenn Just a lot of really good actors and character actors showing up here There's this really crazy monster thing, which was kind of on the cover there that I think looks really good and is very intimidating.
00:11:49
Speaker
ah Gabriel Byrne is also here, um who's well, it's been a lot of shit, but he's been some good stuff, too. Unfortunately, all I can think of right now is the shit cool world and stigmata. But um he makes a really good like cowardly Nazi guy.
00:12:05
Speaker
So it's it's a lot of fun to watch. I would recommend that one. ah Next up at number seven public enemies from 2009, which stars Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard, Jason Clark,
00:12:24
Speaker
Trying think of some other people. Bunch of people are in here. Steven Lang is a very intimidating FBI or Bureau of Investigation agent. I gave this one four stars. I saw it when it came out and I don't remember liking it. I remember thinking it sucked.
00:12:39
Speaker
Part of it, I think, was the digital photography at the time because it looks really weird for this period piece, which is about um ah John Dillinger being shot on digital. It just seems feels weird.
00:12:51
Speaker
But I think these days it's one of those things where it's like, well, I've seen so much stuff shot on digital and this is so fucking phenomenal looking. And this also has some of his obsession with um process, which you see a lot in his movies and realism and these gunshots. I mean,
00:13:08
Speaker
We'll talk about it on the heat episodes. you're going to hear a lot about it, but the gunshots in this sound maybe even better than in heat. I mean, it's like you're right there. ah There's a weird CGI thing at the end that I didn't like at all. But hey, 2009, what are you going to do? I read a lot of stuff that Johnny Depp kind of felt like he was on autopilot and didn't care, but I thought he did a really good job. I think this is one of the better, like, latter period Johnny Depp movies.
00:13:30
Speaker
Christian Bale is good, but he's not really there a lot. He's got some really good scenes, though, with just his face. Like he doesn't have a lot of presence in the movie. I didn't feel. But when he is there, he doesn't say a lot, but you can see what's going on inside.
00:13:44
Speaker
And then Stephen Lang is just fucking terrifying. He's an old school, like Western cowboy sheriff. It's pretty cool. ah There's a murderous row of character actors here. They're all great.
00:13:55
Speaker
I recommend that one.

Appreciation for 'Ferrari' and 'Blackhat'

00:13:57
Speaker
Spoiler alert. I recommend all these except for Last the Mohicans, honestly. And then that's up to you, right? Next to number six, Ferrari from 2023, which stars Adam Driver, Penelope Cruz, Shailene Woodley, who's probably the worst Italian accent in the movie.
00:14:15
Speaker
It's a biopic, obviously, about Enzo Ferrari. It's this very particular period of 1957 where there's this car race called the Milieu Miglia.
00:14:28
Speaker
something mille miglia i'm not italian i'm sorry guys the trailer for this made made it look really cool but it also made look like maybe not a lot's going on and and it only played in the theaters at least around me for like two weeks and it's how it was it came out on christmas so i didn't have a lot of time i missed it in theaters i wish i would have seen it because it sounded amazing on my surround sound but I mean, I can only imagine a theater where you just don't have to worry about anybody else in the house, no neighbors, whatever. Just crank that shit.
00:14:54
Speaker
Adam Driver did a great job. they they The sound of the cars was amazing. Michael Mann is always great with sound, even though he's like famously hard of hearing. Maybe that's why he likes it so loud.
00:15:05
Speaker
The story was a little flitty, but again, it's just like it's a period of time. It's not telling a really big overarching story. There is a thing with Penelope Cruz and Shailene Woodley and the secret family and all this, and I'm going to get into it too much.
00:15:19
Speaker
But I did really enjoy the movie, and I think of the two biopics, this one is much better. gave this four and a half stars. the Adam Driver's performance is much better than Will Smith's. Highly recommend it.
00:15:30
Speaker
And if you saw the trailer and there's like a certain thing in there where you're like, oh well, that just spoiled a big moment of the movie. Don't worry. It didn't. There's a lot more to it. Next up at number five is The Insider from 1999 with Russell Crowe and Al Pacino.
00:15:45
Speaker
It seems like a very boring movie. it's It's about let me just read you just the basic thing because this sounds not interesting. A research chemist comes comes under personal and professional attack when he decides to appear in a 60 minutes expose on big tobacco.
00:16:05
Speaker
Yep. Sounds boring as fuck. It is not. It is astonishingly, astonishingly riveting. um It's basically just like a newsroom drama.
00:16:15
Speaker
a lot of people talking on phones, getting woken up in the middle of the night. a lot of people sitting in rooms chit chatting. It should be boring. But Michael Mann, his direction and Dante Spanatti, the ah cinematographer, the way he shoots it is just and insanely interesting and pulls you in.
00:16:31
Speaker
Al Pacino is great. as he is a lot of the times and Russell Crowe. This is probably the best Russell Crowe performance I have ever seen. And I haven't seen every movie from him.
00:16:42
Speaker
But every moment he was on screen, I was just gripped with what he was doing, what he was saying, the subtle things, not even what he was saying, like his little his movements, he's looking down, he's doing it just great. um Bruce McGill shows up in here, who's a really cool character actor, and he has a scene where he just loses his shit and screams at a dude.
00:17:01
Speaker
And there was another review that I read that said, more angry Bruce McGill, please. And I have to second that, and I'm gonna put it out here on the internet. ah There are points ah where it felt a little sloggy, but I mean it is 158 minutes, which is not unusual for Michael Mann, but overall fantastic movie four and a half stars loved it.
00:17:21
Speaker
Next up.
00:17:24
Speaker
and Black Hat starring Chris Hemsworth. I remember when this movie came out and I skipped it because I thought. Oh, by the way, Arrow video 4K looks phenomenal, sounds phenomenal.
00:17:37
Speaker
plug more people who don't pay me. But I thought, who could possibly care about a hacker movie starring Thor? Why would I care? um I was wrong.
00:17:50
Speaker
This movie is phenomenal. um Four and a half stars is what I gave it. I didn't realize it was a Michael Mann movie at the time that might have made a difference. I didn't know him as well. I knew Heat and Collateral at that point.
00:18:01
Speaker
But oh, and Miami Vice. But like a cyber thriller starring Thor, who could care? No, even the typey type hacky, the typey type hacky hacky scenes are exciting. He found exciting ways to film them, but they also don't focus on that a lot when that's going on. That's time for exposition. So you get a lot of discussion and dialogue, but there are some fucking action set pieces in this hacker movie that will blow you away.
00:18:30
Speaker
I mean,
00:18:33
Speaker
I don't want to spoil things, but like there's a part with two cops and these criminals and there's a shootout. And when you see people getting shot, I mean, it's not like blam fall down again.
00:18:46
Speaker
The sound is great. It's Michael Mann. But I mean, these people get hit and like a dude's flag leg flies out from underneath them then he gets hit in the shoulder and his top half flies back. So he kind of like cartwheels. It's fucking insane. It's visceral and it's brutal.
00:18:58
Speaker
The mood of this whole movie is really tense. The story is actually really exciting when ah cyber thrillers aren't my biggest thing. If I like a cyber thriller, I like stupid shit like virtuosity or hackers where it's just over the top because it's just like, well, at least we can do some stupid shit. It's in a computer, right?
00:19:15
Speaker
It's the 90s. But I mean, as always, the photography here is stunning. Chris Hemsworth does a good job. The the love interest slash. Chinese or Hong Kong FBI kind of thing. I don't know what the group is called.
00:19:31
Speaker
Tang Wei and then Lee Han Wang, who is, I believe her brother, if I'm remembering right, or maybe it's her partner. um They both do a great job. Viola Davis is there. She's great.
00:19:43
Speaker
It's just awesome movie. And I never thought I'd say that.

Highlighting Classics: 'Manhunter' and 'Thief'

00:19:48
Speaker
Number three, have Manhunter. This is the first of my three five star reviews for Michael Mann. So prepare for this.
00:19:56
Speaker
uh, Manhunter, which is the first movie to come out featuring Hannibal Lecter, the character, uh, it's from 1986. Uh, it's about two hours long, but we have, uh, starring as William Peterson, who's most famously of CIA or CSN,
00:20:14
Speaker
c s i He's from the Las Vegas one. He's the old guy in charge with the gray hair. William Peterson, Tom Noonan, who is in a lot of things. But I mean, the first thing that always comes to mind for me is Last Action Hero, where he plays the guy in the trench coat whose name I can't remember. That's like the villain from Jack.
00:20:33
Speaker
ryan or whatever arnold schwarzenegger's character is it's the villain from the third movie he gets pulled into the real world there's a big showdown it's pretty cool uh brian cox is here playing hannibal lecter and he's only got like three scenes maybe four but of the three people who have played hannibal lecter that i've i've seen anthony hopkins Mads Mikkelsen and Brian Cox. Now, look, Hopkins is a great actor. Mikkelsen a great actor. They do great jobs.
00:21:00
Speaker
Brian Cox is the one of the three that I'm convinced would eat someone like eat a person um just not out of anger, just Because I don't know Dennis Freena is there too as kind of the I think he's ah William Peterson's boss But basically they're trying to solve Much like Silence of the Lambs which came later This guy Will Graham unlike that is a seasoned FBI agent And he had to quit because of some shit that happened with Lecter um And he has to come back to try to solve this new murder
00:21:35
Speaker
the Tooth fairy I think it's what the press is calling this guy ah it was Tom Noonan um And much like that other movie though He has to come in, talk to Lecter, get some some clues, some thoughts Get his at his libido, his juice going To go and try to catch Tom Noonan fucking phenomenal movie i i there's nothing that i didn't really like it has a very miami vice kind of vibe because this is right after he was producing miami vice um but there's just this movie is just vibes all over i think it's a better procedural kind of cop thing than silence of the lambs i think silence of the lambs is probably a better movie overall but there's a big budget difference here too i believe and you can kind of see it i've never seen red dragon
00:22:23
Speaker
Which is the book that this movie is based on so it's a retelling of the same story but Michael Mann's eye for like procedural processes and stuff is on full display here it's a cop procedural it's fucking great and there's really cool just conclusion had a great time with it Manhunter go find it if you can it's it's really really good
00:22:49
Speaker
Number two on my list of Michael Mann movies is 1981's Thief His directorial, like theatrical directorial debut ah This is a Criterion collection, Blu-ray, they have it in 4K now I can't justify always just, you know, upping my shit because it sounds fun But great, great copy Amazing movie stars ah James Kahn and wouldn't you believe it?
00:23:18
Speaker
Jim Belushi in the only great performance I've ever seen him do um Tuesday. Well, Robert Prosky, Willie Nelson shows up as kind of a father mentor character.
00:23:30
Speaker
And basically James Kahn is like a professional safe cracker. He's done time in prison. He, he only does diamond heists and cash. He won't do any bonds. duda There's a whole thing about it.
00:23:43
Speaker
He wants to take this money and retire. He's trying to build this life. There's a really great thread of James Kahn's character trying to make this like ideal life that he's seen in magazines become a real thing.
00:23:56
Speaker
Um, and not really understanding the finer things that he wants to enjoy. It's it's such a good, subtle performance from James Conn. It's amazing. um But he gets tied up with Robert Prosky. A bunch of shit happens. There's a big heist.
00:24:10
Speaker
Things don't go as planned, et cetera. Really, really great movie. This is not the first time I've seen this one, although I did just see it for the first time. Maybe two years ago.
00:24:22
Speaker
And it's phenomenal. This could easily be like, oh, this new director, writer director had this fluke with this amazing movie that's so deep in the process of safe cracking stuff that like, I mean, they had props on set that were real safe cracking tools because they had advisors that were real thieves.
00:24:42
Speaker
So, you know, actually one of the the thieves plays a cop in this movie, which is fun, but you could really see the the process, his his early thoughts.
00:24:53
Speaker
um It's not quite exactly what his later films become. But this is like if you showed me thief and collateral, I would know they're from the same director.
00:25:04
Speaker
The first time I saw this movie, I gave it four and a half stars because was like, it's really great. But You know, you can feel that it's a newer person and it just has some stuff.
00:25:14
Speaker
But on upon rewatch, I was like, this is five stars. Like that was the last one I watched in my Michael Mann series because I had seen it before, like very recently. And it moved up to five stars.

Favorite Film: 'Collateral' and Excitement for 'Heat'

00:25:27
Speaker
And it's my second favorite of the ones that I watched here.
00:25:32
Speaker
And number one. The biggest surprise to me is it is to you guys is collateral. from 2004, starring one Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx.
00:25:45
Speaker
Now, if you listen to the podcast, you've probably heard me talk shit about Tom Cruise. Not a huge fan of Tom Cruise. I do like the imp Mission of Impossible movies. i like the Top Gun movies.
00:25:56
Speaker
um for mindless action, but collateral is on another level. This is like the peak of Michael Mann. Like the tension of this whole movie is palpable. ah you You may have heard me mention this before. If you've watched our YouTube videos of new movies, worst people that we did back in 2023, which we'll be bringing back this year, I believe, now that we have this whole video set up.
00:26:16
Speaker
Sympathy with the Devil or Sympathy for the Devil that we did starring Nick Cage back in 2023 that kicked off our new movies, worst people thing. Is very much ah in the mold of collateral.
00:26:28
Speaker
Jamie Foxx is a cab driver. Tom Cruise gets in his cab. Turns out he says he's going to take him to some business meetings. Turns out these business meetings are assassinations.
00:26:40
Speaker
And Jamie Foxx has to travel around with him all night. And it's this one crazy night thing. It's the definition of like pulse pounding thriller. Like you'd never know if Tom Cruise is going to snap.
00:26:54
Speaker
You never know if Jamie Foxx is going to finally try to push back. It's just this this beating thing that just happens. And it's just... yeah It's so good.
00:27:04
Speaker
It's so good. And speaking of collateral, if you've made it this far in the episode, you get to find out. I have this collateral 4K digital download. Available to you listeners.
00:27:17
Speaker
So if you comment on this video or if you send me an email at bad movies, worse people at gmail.com I will enter you in the drawing. It will officially be announced when i um and when When we do heat but I wanted to announce it now for anybody who sat here and listen to me talk about Michael Mann for 30 minutes So I'll be giving that away later in May Oh, and if you're a patron, which you can join at patreon.com slash worst people for only $3 a month where you get two extra episodes every month, a newsletter, bonus digital download giveaways, the ability to help us choose episodes, etc et cetera, et cetera. Han took shots first episodes early and cut when it's not a brand new show. Then you can, if you enter there, comment there or send me a message on there.
00:28:06
Speaker
Or even if you email me and make sure I know that you're a patron, you'll get two entries into the drawing. So that's pretty cool.

Patreon Perks and Future Content

00:28:13

But anyway, collateral is awesome. And all this is because we're going to be talking about heat from 1995, which stars Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer and is two hours and 50 minutes long, which is not my favorite thing in the world.

But this movie uses every second To the nth degree. It's phenomenal ah Secret. This is a really cool looking steelbook. I bought the 4k and I just moved it into my blu-ray steelbook gave Jack the blu-ray you know anyway
00:28:53

It's a really good movie about bank robber and a cop and kind of the, uh, what's not just a bank robber. i mean he's the master thief of sorts. Uh, Neil Macaulay, who is played by Robert De Niro and uh,
00:29:08
Speaker
ah foil in the police department, Vincent Hanna played by Al Pacino. And then Val Kilmer is kind of like a third Chris. Sheherless. I think it was the name if I'm remembering how to pronounce it.
00:29:20
Speaker
um But basically they're they they have these different heists going on and they're being chased by the cops. And there's a big conclusion with a huge gun battle that has inspired real life crime, other movies, all kinds of things.
00:29:34
Speaker
I'm really excited to talk about that when we get there. um And it has what is super famous. One of the things that kind of got this movie seen by people was that it was the movie that will finally have Al Pacino and Robert De Niro on screen together.
00:29:50
Speaker
They had both previously been, of course, in The Godfather 2, but in different time periods in that story. So they never got seen together. But that diner scene, i mean, according to some stuff I was reading online and whatnot, that is literally what convinced at least one of them, if not both of them, to do that movie. It was like, that's going to be a good scene.
00:30:09
Speaker
They didn't meet each other before the scene. and I'm sure they'd met, but they didn't talk before the scene. They didn't rehearse. They didn't, you know, there was none of that stuff. They showed up, they did the scene to get this real feeling of these two dudes who knew something about each other, but never had met before.
00:30:25
Speaker
I'm really excited to talk about that movie. And of course, like I said, I chose that one because it does feature Val Kilmer who recently passed away. so rest in pictures to Val Kilmer.
00:30:36
Speaker
It was between this and Tombstone. And I had just recently watched Tombstone. And even though that would give us a great opportunity for some accents and impersonations, so does this. I mean, we got Al Pacino like she's got a great ass.
00:30:50
Speaker
That's where this comes. That's where that line comes from that Jack says all the time. So um I'm really excited about that. Thank you guys for listening to my spiel. If you did about Michael Mann and his various movies.
00:31:04
Speaker
um He's ah one of our greatest living directors. i I'm worried that Ferrari might be the last movie he makes because he goes a long time in between and he's getting up there in years and maybe he just doesn't want to do it anymore. i don't know, but that's it for now. So thanks for listening and tune back in next Monday.
00:31:21

As we we just wrapped up listener request month, we're going to have our first episode or our single episode of It's Going to Be Bay, which is what we do now to watch one Michael Bay movie a year and no more than that.
00:31:34
Speaker
And we're doing The Rock, which is an excellent movie with Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage and ah Ed Harris and Michael Bean and William Forsyth and on and on and on and on.
00:31:47
Speaker
So that'll be our next episode coming up Monday. Then starting in May is Mental Health Month. And we're going to be talking about, again, like I said, movies that all of the hosts here have chosen.
00:31:57
Speaker
ah One that Whitney's been talking about, trying to get us to watch for 140 some odd episodes. um We have a movie I was kind of surprised Jack chose, even though he likes some silly shit.
00:32:11
Speaker
And we have Heat from Me. And we have a great action movie, which also has one Sir Nicholas Cage. That's all I'm going to say for now, because if you want to find out what's playing next month ahead of time, you join the Patreon and you get a newsletter that tells you at the beginning of the month everything that's coming up.
00:32:28
Speaker
We also have a patron selected mental health episode on our Patreon feed, which is where we generally do mental health episodes. So usually we'll pick something super, super good.
00:32:40
Speaker
Like last year we did hot fuzz, which was hard because it's so good. All we kept doing was wanting to do quotes from the movie. So this year we let our patrons choose. And we did a raffle and we have a movie coming up from one of them.
00:32:53
Speaker
So tune in for that. Oh, and let me, lest I forget latch key vids, which is our Patreon exclusive show where we watch forgotten or never known television shows from the nineties.
00:33:06
Speaker
Um, we did a special episode this month on a British sitcom that had a grand total of one episode that aired a grand total of one time called Heil honey. I'm home.
00:33:17
Speaker
Which as it sounds is a hitler sitcom in the style of I love Lucy and it's Yeah, I mean you got it, right? But in May we'll be back to cop rock, which is what we've been talking about, which is a phenomenal it's it's bad, but it's a phenomenally bad um Gritty street police drama that is also a Broadway musical And the episode coming up in may is the cocaine mutiny episode number five. So we're about halfway to that show being over and I'm sad about it, but thank you guys for tuning in. Remember, send me an email, bad movies, worse people at gmail.com.
