It's Derrick's 40th birthday this month, so we're getting into some of his favorite genres and we kick it off this week with a lo-fi crime caper, Red Rock West! This neo-noir thriller stars Nicolas Cage as a down-on-his-luck drifter who stumbles into a small Wyoming town and is mistaken for a hitman hired to kill a local woman, played by Lara Flynn Boyle of Twin Peaks. Seizing the chance for easy money, he takes the cash but soon finds himself entangled in a web of deceit, murder, and double-crosses, especially when the real hitman (Dennis Hopper) shows up. What starts as a lucky break turns into a deadly chase across the desert where everyone’s lying, and no one’s getting out clean.

Ep 177: Red Rock West

After a week off, we dive into the much-maligned Book of Boba Fett, which kicks off with Boba climbing out of the Sarlacc pit, only to be robbed by Jawas and enslaved by Tusken Raiders. Through flashbacks, we see his slow rise from half-dead bounty hunter to survivor earning the Tuskens’ respect. In the present, Boba tries to establish himself as Tatooine’s new crime boss, taking over Jabba’s old territory with Fennec Shand at his side. This is a series that we look forward to discussing, as it isn't the universally loved and top-notch show that The Mandalorian was.

Leprechaun 3 finds Warwick Davis's iconic character in Las Vegas, where greed, luck, and neon excess are the perfect playground for his murderous mischief. When a pawn shop owner unleashes him, the Leprechaun goes on a rhyming, pun-filled rampage through casinos, leaving bodies in his wake as gamblers and grifters chase after his magical coin. Along the way, a college kid who picks up the coin starts turning into a leprechaun himself, adding a bizarre twist to the chaos. It’s gory, goofy, and gleefully campy.

Probably the best film in the Nightmare franchise, this one takes Freddy Krueger’s dream-stalking mayhem to a psychiatric hospital, where the last of Elm Street’s kids are locked up for their nightmares. Guided by Nancy (the hubba-hubba-inducing Heather Langenkamp, returning from the first film), the teens learn to harness special dream superpowers to fight back, turning the nightmare world into a bizarre battleground. Freddy, of course, amps up his sadistic creativity with some of the series’ most iconic kills. Equal parts scary and weirdly empowering, it’s the entry that turned Freddy into a pop-culture legend. Welcome to prime time, bitch!

Jaws 3-D trades Amity Island for the flashy new SeaWorld park in Florida, where the Brody brothers now work and—surprise!—a massive great white shark crashes the grand opening. The park’s high-tech attractions quickly turn into death traps as the shark chomps through tourists, dolphins, and glass tunnels. To make matters worse, it turns out Mama Shark is lurking too, making it a double dose of aquatic terror. With cheesy 3-D effects and campy spectacle, it’s less a terrifying thriller and more a theme-park monster ride gone hilariously off the rails.

Ep 174: Jaws 3 - Hallo3n Horrorfest

In The Mandalorian Chapter 16, The Rescue, Mando leads a daring assault on Moff Gideon’s cruiser to save Grogu, teaming up with Bo-Katan, Cara Dune, Fennec Shand, and Koska Reeves. After an intense showdown, Mando defeats Gideon in combat—accidentally winning the Darksaber and Bo-Katan’s side-eye in the process. Just as things look dire with Dark Troopers closing in, the Luke Skywalker arrives to mow them down like it’s 1983 again. The episode ends with a tearful goodbye as Mando removes his helmet so Grogu can see his face, giving Star Wars fans everywhere a collective emotional meltdown.

HTSF Ep 34: The Mandalorian Ch 16 - The Rescue

For the third entry in this long-running franchise we bring back our friend and Tremors virgin 3CEUS. This one finds survivalist Burt Gummer taking center stage as he battles the familiar Graboids, the two-legged Shriekers, and a brand-new evolution: the winged “Ass-Blasters,” which propel themselves with explosive farts (yes, really). The townsfolk try to turn their monster problem into a tourist attraction, but of course, chaos and carnage ensue. It’s equal parts goofy creature feature and loving nod to the original, with Burt cementing himself as the franchise’s unstoppable, gun-toting hero.

In Chapter 15, The Believer, Mando teams up with ex-Imperial sharpshooter Mayfeld for a covert mission to locate Moff Gideon’s cruiser. To do so, Mando disguises himself as an Imperial trooper and endures a tense infiltration of an Imperial refinery, culminating in an awkwardly brilliant mess-hall scene where Mayfeld snaps and blasts an officer mid-monologue. After a chaotic escape involving TIE fighters and Slave One-style fireworks, Mayfeld earns his freedom. This is the Way.

Howling III: The Marsupials takes the werewolf franchise in a wonderfully bonkers new direction... straight to Australia, where the creatures aren’t just wolves, but marsupial werewolves with pouches. A young she-wolf flees her cult-like pack to pursue love with a filmmaker, while scientists and government officials bumble around trying to study (or exploit) the species. There are werewolf births, bizarre transformations, and even ballet involved, all delivered with a mix of horror, camp, and unintentional comedy. It’s less scary sequel, more creature-feature soap opera with kangaroo DNA.
