Impact of Gut Pathogens

00:00:00
Speaker
So what can pathogenic infections do? The list is actually pretty long. So gut pathogens, gut bugs, nasty harmful gut bugs, they can damage the intestinal lining, contribute to leaky gut, they can cause inflammation, they can contribute to immune dysfunction, they can promote autoimmunity, they can keep the body in a state of chronic stress,
00:00:23
Speaker
This is another thing that is difficult to look at someone and say, is this person in a state of chronic stress?

Hidden Stress Indicators

00:00:30
Speaker
When you run a test, you can see their cortisol, their stress hormones are high. You might see their antioxidant levels are depleted, things like that. So again, it's important to identify these hidden stressors. They're hidden. That's the key word here.
00:00:48
Speaker
Other things that pathogenic infections can do is they can increase oxidative stress levels. This is something I will discuss later on what that is. They can produce a variety of harmful byproducts, chemicals, that some of them can be toxic to our good bacteria.
00:01:04
Speaker
Others can damage the gut lining, the intestinal barrier. Others

Gut Microbiome Imbalance

can get by the intestinal barrier and they can get into the central nervous system and the brain, they can cause behavioral changes, right?
00:01:22
Speaker
I already mentioned that pathogenic infections can contribute to decreased beneficial bacteria. They can cause malnutrition or nutrient deficiencies. They can increase food sensitivities. They can contribute to liver congestion and dysfunction.
00:01:38
Speaker
And overall,

The Yeast Problem in Gut Health

00:01:39
Speaker
when your child has pathogenic organisms roaming around in the gut unchecked, this creates an environment that is conducive to proliferation of secondary overgrowths, biofilms, and further infestation. So let's say you have a child with a bacterial infection. The longer that stays like that, the more yeasts will be able to proliferate because they love that environment.
00:02:03
Speaker
the more organisms can get together into these communities, like they're called biofilms. If you can think of the scum that gathers around wet areas, you know, around the shower, in the bathroom, around the sink, those scummy films, that's a biofilm.
00:02:21
Speaker
And these can

form inside the gut over time. And these nasty organisms, they can hide in these biofilms. So again, this just underscores the importance of better be safe than sorry. Don't assume your child doesn't have gut dysfunction or a gut infection or yeast overgrowth. East overgrowth is extremely prevalent in autistic children. I'll discuss that later.
