David, Nabal & Abigail's Story

00:01:23
Speaker
Well, we are reading through the book of 1 Samuel at the moment. We are reading about David.
00:01:29
Speaker
And today we are going to see David. Oh, I don't want to say. I'll just let it go. Sometimes I give a little preview of what's coming.
00:01:39
Speaker
But let's just read the story and see what happens today.
00:01:48
Speaker
the first Our section is coming from 1 Samuel chapter 25, and it's one big section for one big chapter, and it's entitled, The Man Whose Name Means Fool.
00:02:01
Speaker
Now Samuel died, and all God's people cried for him. They put his body in a grave. David moved to a desert near the town of Carmel.
00:02:12
Speaker
A rich man lived in Carmel. He had a thousand goats and three thousand sheep. His name was Nabal, and his wife's name was Abigail. But Nabal was rude and mean.
00:02:27
Speaker
It was the time of the year for cutting the sheep's wool off, and David heard that Nabal was cutting sheep wool. So he sent ten young men to Nabal. David said, Tell Nabal hello for me.
00:02:39
Speaker
Tell him we pray good things for him and his family. Then tell him that his shepherds were with us for a while. We were good to them. He can ask them about it.
00:02:50
Speaker
Then ask Nabal to give us whatever he can. So David's men went to Nabal and they told him what David had said. Who is David?
00:03:01
Speaker
said Nabal. Lots of people are leaving their masters like he did. Why should I give bread and water to him? I have meat for my workers. Why should I give it to David?
00:03:12
Speaker
don't even know where his men come from. ah David's men went back and they told David what Nabal had said. Get your swords, said David.
00:03:25
Speaker
So the men put their swords on and David put his sword on. Then David set out for Nabal's house with 400 men. Back at Nabal's house, a servant told Abigail what had happened.
00:03:38
Speaker
Nabal was rude to David's men. But David's men were good to us. We were in the fields near them and they were around us like a wall. We were safe.
00:03:51
Speaker
See if there is something that you can do about this. We're in trouble now. Nepal is such a rude man. Nobody can talk to him. Abigail didn't wait.
00:04:04
Speaker
She got 200 loaves of bread. She got meat from two ah from five sheep ready to cook. She got two bags of wine. She got five baskets of grain.
00:04:16
Speaker
She got 100 raisin cakes and 200 fig cakes. She put all this onto donkeys, and then she sent her servants ahead with the gifts. She followed them, but she didn't tell Nabal.

Abigail's Wise Intervention

00:04:31
Speaker
Abigail rode through the mountain valley on her donkey. She saw David and his men coming down the mountain. She met them. David had just been saying, it was no use. so We watched over Nabal's sheep in the desert.
00:04:48
Speaker
We were good to him, but he has been mean to us and I'll kill him and his men.
00:04:54
Speaker
Abigail saw David. She got off her donkey. She bowed down with her face to the ground and she was at David's feet. She said, blame only me.
00:05:07
Speaker
Let me talk to you. Hear what I'm saying. Don't listen to Nabal. He's a rude man. Then Abigail said that Nabal's name meant fool.
00:05:20
Speaker
She said, he is a fool. Abigail told David. God kept you from killing Nabal and his men. Now I've brought you a gift.
00:05:31
Speaker
Give it to your men. Please forgive our wrong. God will make you the king because you fight God's battles. Oh, praise God, said David. He sent you here.
00:05:44
Speaker
You are very wise. So I pray that God will bring you good things. Then David took the gifts Abigail had brought. Go back home in peace, he said.
00:05:56
Speaker
So Abigail went home to Nabal. He was having a party fit for a king. He was feeling good and very drunk.
00:06:06
Speaker
So Abigail did not tell him what she had done. And the next morning, Abigail told Nabal everything. Then Nabal's heart stopped working. He lay ist still a stone.
00:06:20
Speaker
Ten days later, he died. David heard that Nabal had died, and he said, Praise God, he paid Nabal back for being mean, and he kept me from doing the wrong thing.
00:06:37
Speaker
Then David sent a message to Abigail, and he asked her to marry him. Abigail bowed with her face to the ground. I am ready to serve David, she said.
00:06:49
Speaker
She quickly got it on her donkey, and her five servant girls went with her. Then she married David. David had had another wife, too, but Saul had told David's first wife, Nicole, to marry someone else.
00:07:06
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.
00:07:11
Speaker
I almost told you that that David was going to get a new wife. And I thought, oh, don't say anything. That's the very end of the story.
00:07:21
Speaker
So what we see here is that although David was supposed to be part of Saul's family and when he married Michal, Saul's daughter, Saul had even taken away his wife from him and had her marry someone else.
00:07:35
Speaker
So David didn't have his wife anymore. And here God sent David a new wife, Abigail. And we read in the beginning that she was both smart and beautiful.
00:07:48
Speaker
So what a wonderful thing for David. And what we want to see here is that in this instance, David responded with anger. He was immediately angry and he wanted to pay back Nabal's men who had done nothing wrong.
00:08:06
Speaker
He had protected them and he wanted to kill Nabal. But sometimes what we read and what we hear is that sometimes people are hurt because by association.
00:08:17
Speaker
That if somebody knows somebody else and that they are with them, in this case by choice or not, because they probably didn't have much of a choice who they were servants for, who they worked for, then they would be considered guilty by association.
00:08:34
Speaker
And David was acting very angrily and he was not acting correctly. And in this case, God stopped him from doing the wrong thing.

Lessons from Abigail's Actions

00:08:43
Speaker
And he sent Abigail.
00:08:45
Speaker
And he sent Abigail to ah intercede, to go in between. And she when she heard about what Nabal had done, she brought gifts. And David was very thankful for that.
00:08:58
Speaker
And she was very wise to do so. And she was taking care of the men and her husband. She even protected him. God sent her to protect him from his own rudeness.
00:09:11
Speaker
So our takeaway today, our daily application is sometimes when our first thought is to do something wrong, God will send someone to calm us down and to straighten us out a little bit.
00:09:27
Speaker
Could be a friend, could be a parent. and But God will sometimes send people to us to give us that little bit of reason and say, hey, hey, calm down. It's okay.
00:09:38
Speaker
Don't respond this way. and He's just a fool. And even his name means fool. So don't be angry. In fact, she said, only be angry with me. Put it on me.
00:09:50
Speaker
And that was very considerate of her. And then David was moved by her gratefulness, by her thoughtfulness and her what her wisdom. And then he asked her to marry him.
00:10:02
Speaker
And I love a good love story. So there's not much, there's not many no courting or dating going on in this story. But ah but he he did propose. He didn't even do it himself. I thought that was kind of funny. He sent servants to go make the request for him.
00:10:18
Speaker
But, um and in fact, when when ah when i had asked ah my husband, I told you previously ah that I wanted him to marry me.
00:10:29
Speaker
that I had done the same thing like Ruth. ah he had We'd gone shopping for a wedding ring. And I told him, I said, well, I'd like you to ask me to marry you with a ring. And him being who he was, he did not ask me.
00:10:43
Speaker
He never did ask me. What he did though was he put the ring in my sun visor while we were driving and i in the box and I had to go to the bank.
00:10:55
Speaker
And he likes to put his checks when we're getting ready to go to the ATM up in the sun visor of the car. I don't know why. That's just where he sticks it so he doesn't lose it down the side of the seat.
00:11:06
Speaker
And I was looking all over for whatever. I needed to get something or put something in the bank. And it was Mother's Day. We were on our way to go see my mom. and he And I was looking all over and I was starting to get a little bit frustrated.
00:11:19
Speaker
And he said, well, maybe it's in the visor. And I said, that's where you put your stuff. I don't put my stuff up in the visor. But I pulled the visor down and my ring fell into my lap. And I looked over at him and I was like, really?
00:11:34
Speaker
Right now? Here at the ATM? And he said, Diana has something to ask you. And so I turned around into the backseat and she said, will you marry daddy?
00:11:53
Speaker
So there we go. there's There's my application too that I can associate with this today. And i i i must have said, i can't even remember what I said. i was Because I was just like, really?
00:12:06
Speaker
You're not going to ask me yourself? You're sitting right there and you won't do it? And he was like.
00:12:17
Speaker
And I probably said, okay, fine, whatever, or something snippy like that. So if you're not going to ask me, I'm not going to answer. I probably said something ridiculous like that. I really can't remember.
00:12:28
Speaker
But our daily application is is not my marriage proposal or lack thereof. It is that God will send people. to ah straighten us out and to calm us down.
00:12:39
Speaker
and And I'm very thankful for that. That's one of the reasons why he puts friends in our lives and and things like that. Like we talked earlier about him sending Jonathan to be his very best friend.
00:12:51
Speaker
And it's just wonderful to see that even somebody we don't know, as we see today, David did not know Abigail. She was a stranger and yet God sent her and God knew that they would be married.
00:13:03
Speaker
So, God even used Nabal's rudeness for good. Isn't that amazing?
00:13:14
Speaker
Our God is so amazing that he can use somebody being rude for good. And he was so shocked when Abigail told him that what she had done, because he had a grand party for himself that said fit for a king, but he didn't want to spare anything for David.
00:13:30
Speaker
So um I'm going to jump to a conclusion and say he was a little bit cheap there too. Well, he was a fool and rude and mean. He was very happy to use his food and spend his money for himself, but he didn't want to share any with David. And he clearly had plenty of it.
00:13:48
Speaker
It said he was very rich. And when his wife told him what she had done, that she had shared 200 loaves of bread and um all those fig cakes and wine and grain and five sheep that she had prepared and that she took it over there herself, he was just like, uh, uh, uh.
00:14:09
Speaker
And his heart stopped working properly and 10 days later he was gone.
00:14:14
Speaker
So God even used that for good because now he provided a husband for Abigail and ah possibly David would have inherited her her um property that was part of her husband's.
00:14:29
Speaker
I don't know, but I'm speculating there is that being a possibility. But that was ah ah that was a good move for David. And it all started because David was kind to Nabal's shepherds when they were out in the field in the desert, he said.
00:14:45
Speaker
The shepherds were out there with Nabal's sheep, and David and had his him and his men take care of the shepherds. the shepherd the ah The servants said to Abigail that the David and his men were around them like a wall, and they were safe.
00:15:03
Speaker
So David was paid back for his kindness by God. So we never know what little things or big things God is going to do um to reward us for our kindness.
00:15:18
Speaker
And David was just looking for some food, and he was hoping that that would come through for him. um But he got more than food. He got a wife, and he potentially got to inherit the land as well as part of his wife's belongings.
00:15:34
Speaker
So there we go. ah We just never know the extent to which God is going to do wonderful things and when we do something good for somebody else.
00:15:45
Speaker
And that's not something he was looking to have happen, David or Abigail. They were just trying to do the right thing. So God sees us. He sees our hearts.
00:15:57
Speaker
And he knows when we are trying to do the right thing. And he does reward us. He takes good care of us. And he provided for the men and he provided for David and he will provide for us too.
00:16:08
Speaker
So let's be encouraged and and today to do the right thing to end up and to maybe not be so quick to anger. David was a little quick to anger there today, but God protected him from his anger.
00:16:20
Speaker
And if we are a bit quick to anger and God sends us somebody, let's be um aware of that and say, oh my gosh, God sent somebody to me just like he sent Abigail to David. And let's praise God and thank him for that, for keeping us from doing the wrong thing, as David said.
00:16:38
Speaker
And but let's be thankful when we find that God has given us good things.
