Introduction to Daily Bible Reading

00:00:03
Speaker
Hi there, everyone. Today is Monday, February 10th, 2025, and you're here with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching, and we're here for our daily Bible reading. Thank you so much for being here with me today. I hope you've been enjoying the readings. We are reading through the entire Bible in one year, and we are using the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley.
00:00:28
Speaker
If you are just joining me this year, then I want you to know not to be discouraged just because this is a kids Bible does not mean that it is not great for us adults too. This is simply an easy to understand big picture overview of the Bible all the way from Genesis to Revelation and it's written in storybook form and it's written in chronological order.
00:00:54
Speaker
So this is a great way to know the overview of the big story of the Bible that God has given us. And it's in such an easy, conversational ah conversationally written manner. It's really wonderful. I have really been enjoying it. I very much feel the connection to the people that we are reading about. And it's it's just been a blessing in my life and a joy to read these stories and to share my personal application with you.

Support Options and Participation Gifts

00:01:22
Speaker
which is another thing that if you are just joining us today, I want you to know that you can expect to see how God can personally apply every single day's reading in your life. It doesn't matter that it's a storybook version. These stories are so applicable to our lives every single day. And that's what I love about ah the God's Bible.
00:01:47
Speaker
So I have been keeping track of my daily reading with my calendar. And if you have your calendar, go ahead and take that out and get ready to mark it off for today. If you are new with us today, I want you to know that I have this downloadable calendar for free on my website. If you head over to.com and you click on read the Bible in one year heading up at the top of the page, you will see that I have the calendar there. It is a free download for anybody who is interested in printing out a calendar and having that as their daily
00:02:27
Speaker
ah commitment reminder that's sort of a record keeping so that you can remember that this was the year that you read through the entire Bible and it doesn't matter that it's a storybook form. So you are welcome to cross that off with either your ex or a sticker of your own or a smiley face or a little ah drawn across whatever it is you like to use.
00:02:50
Speaker
I do have that calendar ah that I will send you a copy of along with a sheet of stickers that are the ones that I am using ah for my calendar. And they are they are these gold foil cross stickers. And I will send you a sheet of those stickers for the month as well as a printed copy of the calendar printed on sugar cane paper if you ah decide that you feel led to support the event.
00:03:16
Speaker
And I have those options for supporting the event on my website as well and under the part of the family section ah in parentheses memberships. And those would be a recurring ah monthly support, but you are welcome to cancel at any time. There is no obligation to continue. You can do it as a one-time support of the event.
00:03:38
Speaker
And that is totally optional. I just wanted you to know that it is an option for you and that my way of giving back to you is to print out that sugar cane copy calendar and send you a sheet of stickers for the month.
00:03:52
Speaker
I have a family membership on there as well, so that if you have more than just you who is listening, just send me an email and let me know how many in your family are listening. And I will send each one of you ah your own copy of the calendar with your own sheet of stickers to keep track of the monthly reading, a daily reading on a monthly basis, so that everybody has their own record of their commitment to read the Bible each day.
00:04:20
Speaker
So I'm so glad that you are here with me. Thank you. Whether you have been listening via your favorite podcast on Amazon music or Spotify or YouTube music, or whether you are watching on Spotify video or whether you are watching via TikTok or on YouTube or on my site, or whether you have found me from Facebook, however you are here. I really love the fact that God has led you here. and I'm so excited that I am seeing this event grow with more listeners all the time. So thank you for being here.
00:04:51
Speaker
I think that if you are new that you will enjoy it. So go ahead and spend the time to listen today and and pray about it and ah see if God has led you to continue with us for the year.
00:05:02
Speaker
I also do at the end of the month, for those who have been reading with me for the whole month, I do a little participation giveaway. So if you have been reading with me for the entire month and you leave a comment on one of the sites where you're watching like TikTok or ah via my site or wasn on Spotify or wherever you may be listening, we don't have comments available on YouTube music or on YouTube videos.
00:05:30
Speaker
ah But you can send me a message through my site. I have a message section available above the ah daily reading, which is under the ah the month underneath the and read the Bible in one year heading. I have a dropdown menu for February, and you can leave a ah comment each day to just let me know that you read it. And if you do that every day for the month, then I will send you a little gift at the end of the month for your perfect attendance. Just a little motivational gift there to thank you for being here with me. And you do not need to be supporting the event to be eligible for that participation gift. That is

Transition from Moses to Joshua

00:06:08
Speaker
just my free gift to you.
00:06:10
Speaker
I love to do that. So last month we had bookmarks that I sent out to everybody. And I was really just ah a joy and a pleasure to do that. I'm so thankful to see people listening to God's Word. And if you know of anybody who would benefit or would be interested from joining along with us, please share this event with them and let's spread the word about reading God's Word.
00:06:36
Speaker
Well, we're going to get into our reading here in just a minute. And I wanted to remind us that it is now. We're finished with Moses. And I don't know about you, but it was sad for me when Moses finally died. We spent so much time with Moses.
00:06:53
Speaker
And he was special. God never talked to anybody exactly the same way that he talked with Moses. Moses was like a friend to him. And Moses, we are told, was very humble. And I don't know about you, but that is something that I am striving for after reading about Moses and his humility. i ah So I love that. And I love how his faith in God just never wavered.
00:07:21
Speaker
And so that's definitely been an encouragement to me to see how God can use ah everybody. And God has appointed Joshua as Moses' successor, which means person to come after Moses. And um we are going to see that God is speaking to Joshua as well, and that he is going to give Joshua directions. And Joshua,
00:07:49
Speaker
Has some directions that are given to him that I am taking away for our own application every day. So ah keep your ears open for those applications that ah God gives to Joshua and see if you can find what they are.
00:08:09
Speaker
As always, if you are interested in reading more of the details about what happened in our daily reading, I want to encourage you, if you feel led and are hungry for more of God's word, to head up your big Bible and to read the chapters that we are covering today or any day.
00:08:30
Speaker
Today, we are going to be reading through Joshua. We are starting the book of Joshua. And remember, since this is chronological, ah in the past several days, a week or so, we were ah we saw that there were many books that the rules were taken from. There was Deuteronomy and Numbers and even some more Exodus. And now we are into the book of Joshua. And we will be reading through Joshua 1 through 5 today in our readings.
00:08:57
Speaker
We have some amazing things to hear about today. It seems that there is no shortage of miracles and wondrous things that our God does in in each day's reading. And so I'm really excited. I just every day I want to see what wonder what wondrous thing God is going to do.
00:09:17
Speaker
because He has done so many. And if not for the fact that we had these written down in our Bible to read, we would not know about them. So I'm so thankful that God gave the direction to write these things down so that we would have these ah records records of the wondrous things that God has done. Because I don't know about you, but my memory is not perfect. I cannot remember absolutely everything.
00:09:45
Speaker
And ah soon I will be bringing to you a wonderful idea ah that God has put upon Julie's heart to help us remember the wonderful things that God has done in our own lives. Because it I am convinced, especially ah in reading our entries today and and every day, that God wants us to remember, we are a people who forget, we are a species with amnesia, I have heard it said.
00:10:14
Speaker
And so God has given us so many things. He gave us a song yesterday. God wrote a song. Isn't that amazing? I'm still in awe of that. He gave Moses a song that he wrote to help the people remember the things that he had done.
00:10:32
Speaker
By remembering the things that God has done, it's not just to remember them. It's not just like looking through a photo album. the reason One of the reasons we want to remember God's wonderful things is so that when we are faced with difficult times, we do not become discouraged. We remember the things that God has done and the ways that he has been faithful to us in the past so that we will not be afraid. We will not have a spirit of fear, but we will have a spirit of hope.
00:11:01
Speaker
and a spirit of peace and a spirit of love so that we can look to him and know with assurance that he is taking care of things. And he is the one that the battle belongs to. He is fighting our battles for us. And that is something else I want you to keep your ears open for today is for God fighting the battles for us. There's not a lot written on that in in today's entry, but it's there. And I want you to keep your ears open for that.
00:11:32
Speaker
All right, well, let's get going. I just get so excited. I wanna be sure we we understand our daily application and and remind us why we're doing this and what we're reading about and stuff. All right, so hiding on the roof comes to us today from Joshua chapters one and two. God told Joshua, Moses is dead. Now get ready to go across the Jordan River.
00:12:01
Speaker
You'll go into the land that I'm giving my people. I'll give you the land you walk on. This is what I promised Moses. Nobody will be able to come against you all your life. I will never leave you. I will never forget about you. So be strong. Be very brave. Be careful to obey the laws Moses gave you.
00:12:30
Speaker
Think about the laws day and night. Then you'll do what they say. You'll do a good job in whatever you'll do. So be strong, be brave. Don't be scared. Don't give up because you think it won't happen. God will be with you wherever you go.
00:12:56
Speaker
Joshua sent two men across the Jordan River. He told them, look over the land, take a careful look at the city of Jericho. So the two Jewish men went across the river and they went

Key Biblical Events and God's Presence

00:13:09
Speaker
into the city of Jericho. They went to stay at a house there. The house belonged to a woman named Rahab. But somebody told the king of Jericho, some Jewish men came here tonight, they came to look around our land.
00:13:25
Speaker
So the king sent a message to Rahab. It said, send me the men who came to your house. They are here to look around our whole city, our whole land. But Rahab had let the men hide up on her roof.
00:13:41
Speaker
and they were hiding under some plants. When Rahab heard the message, she said, yes, the men did come here. I didn't know where they came from. They left before the city gate closed for the night. I don't know where they went, but if you hurry, you might catch them. So the king's men left to chase Joshua's men and the city gate closed behind them. Then Rahab went to talk to the men on her roof.
00:14:09
Speaker
I know God has given this land to you, she said. Our people are afraid. We heard what God did at the Red Sea. We heard how you won over the kings. So nobody here is brave anymore. Your God is the God of heaven and earth. I've been kind to you, said Rahab. So promise me something. Promise me you'll save my life.
00:14:38
Speaker
Save my father and my mother. Save my brothers and sisters. The men said, don't tell what we're doing and then we will be kind to you. We'll save you when God gives us this land. Go into the hills, Rahab told them. The men chasing you won't find you there. Hide there for three days and then you can go home. Tie a red rope in your window.
00:15:06
Speaker
The men said, then bring all your family into this house. That way we can save you. But if you tell on us, we won't save you. All right, said Rahab. Rahab's house was a part of the city wall. So she let the men climb out her window. She helped them down the wall with a rope. Then she tied a red rope in her window.
00:15:33
Speaker
The men went into the hills. They stayed there for three days. They told Joshua everything that had happened after they went back to camp. We know God will give us the land. They said, all the people there are afraid of us. Joshua chapters three through five, the river stops flowing. Three days passed. Joshua sent men through the camp.
00:16:03
Speaker
They told the people, you've never come this way before. So watch for the Arc Box. The priests will carry it. You should follow and then you'll know which way to go. Joshua told the people, get ready. Tomorrow God will do wonderful things.
00:16:28
Speaker
Then Joshua told the priests to get the ark box. So the priests took the ark box out and started out. God told Joshua, today I'll start making you great. That way the people will know I am with you. I'll be with you as I was with Moses. Tell the priests to take the ark box to the river. Tell them to stand in the river.
00:16:56
Speaker
So Joshua told the people, come and listen. Here's how you'll know that God is with you. The priests will step into the river with the ark box, God's ark box. Then the river water will stop flowing. It will stand up in a pile. Now the river was very deep at this time, but the priests stepped into the water. Then the water stopped flowing.
00:17:26
Speaker
It piled up and at a town far away. The priest stood in the middle of the river. It was dry there now. The people crossed the river, walking on dry ground. Then God told Joshua, choose 12 men, one from each family group. Tell them to get 12 rocks from the middle of the river.
00:17:52
Speaker
carry them with you. Set them down where you camp tonight." So Joshua chose 12 men. They got the rocks. And Joshua said, your children will ask what these rocks are for and then you'll to tell them what happened today. The priests were still standing in the middle of the river. They waited until everybody was across. Then God said, tell the priests to come out.
00:18:23
Speaker
The priests carried the art box out of the river. They stepped up onto the bank of the river and right away the water flowed back into the river. Right away the river got very deep like it was before. God's people traveled to some flat land and they camped there. They set up the rocks from the river. That day the people saw that Joshua was an important leader.
00:18:53
Speaker
Joshua became as important to them as Moses had been.
00:18:59
Speaker
Now the kings of the land heard what had happened. They heard that God dried up the river. They heard that God's people crossed on dry ground. So they were afraid. 14 days passed. Then it was time to have the Passover holiday.
00:19:23
Speaker
So God's people had their holiday. And the next day, they ate food that had grown in the promised land. After that, God did not send manna anymore to eat. Now they came close to the city of Jericho. Joshua looked up. He saw a man standing in front of him. The man was holding out a sword.
00:19:52
Speaker
Joshua walked up to the man. Are you for us or against us? Asked Joshua. I'm not for you or against you said the man. I am the captain of God's army. That's why I've come. Then Joshua put his face down to the ground. What message do you bring me? He asked.
00:20:16
Speaker
Take your shoes off, said the man. You are standing on a special, holy place. So Joshua did what the man said. And that is the end of our reading today.
00:20:35
Speaker
I'm gonna go back to the beginning. I have a tendency to go from what we just read and work backwards.
00:20:45
Speaker
Did you keep your ears open for the direction that God gave joseph Joshua? And that we are to I think we are to do that too. That is my personal application today. He said to Joshua more than once. He said, be strong, be very brave. Be careful to obey the laws Moses gave you. Think about the laws day and night.
00:21:11
Speaker
but Then you'll do what they say and you'll do a good job in whatever you do. So be strong, be brave, don't give up. Don't give up because you think it won't happen. God will be with you wherever you go. So whatever we do today, let's remember not to be scared or not to think that something won't happen because God is with us.
00:21:39
Speaker
When things look impossible, that's when God makes it possible because with man, it is impossible. But with God, nothing is impossible and he will go with us. And did you keep your ears open for the little special clue that God has an army? I i guess I never realized that either. and I've heard it said God's army, but this man, was he just a man?
00:22:10
Speaker
No, he was an angel and he was the commander of God's army. And he said that joe Joshua was to take off his shoes because where Joshua was standing was holy place. I was very curious. I just had to know if there was more to that story. So I went to our big Bible and I read Joshua five But there was no more. Our Bible is very complete. And so I want that to be an encouragement to you that this is not just for kids. This is for us grownups too. This Bible gives us a good deal of the detail, but it is giving it to us in storybook fashion and it leaves out some of the small details. For instance, it left out that the men ah in that 14 days were healing from a circumcision.
00:23:07
Speaker
So that's not something that we have to really go into for, um it's not part it's not it's not a super important part of the story. It is a detail and and it's important, but it's not a super important part of the big story that that that event occurred while they were going into the land of Jericho. So I just wanted to give that as an example today.
00:23:31
Speaker
And God used the Arc Box to part the river and stop the water from flowing. And then everybody heard about it and they were afraid. That was so amazing. Notice how God used the Arc Box. The Arc Box goes in front of them.
00:23:50
Speaker
If you are just joining us or even if you are not, remember that the ark box is what the people were to build because it had two winged creatures facing each other and God would meet with them in between the two winged creatures. So they are facing each other like this and God would meet with them in the middle between them.
00:24:15
Speaker
So that was to signify God's presence with them, that he goes first. His angel, if he sends an angel, goes first. His presence is what would be protecting them and guiding them. And we may not have an actual art box that we put in front of us every day to guide our steps, but I want us to remember that God indeed still goes ahead of us.
00:24:40
Speaker
place him in front of you today and invite him to guide your steps to lead you of where to go. Because as Joshua said, we've never been here before. You should watch for the ark. And in our case, we should watch for God and he will tell us where to go.
00:25:01
Speaker
So that is definitely my big life application today that is just again reminds me that I am right where God puts me to be every single day and that God puts people in my path every single day. So I wanted to invite you to ask God today to show you what he has for you in mind today.

Applying Biblical Lessons to Life

00:25:20
Speaker
to see where he will take you today, where he will guide you today in your daily life, because your path is different from my path. But he does bring us together here to read from his Bible. And I'm so glad that you are choosing to do that with me every day this year.
00:25:38
Speaker
Well, I think that that is, oh, I wanted i did want to mention Rahab, that Rahab is protecting the people, the men who who have come, the two men. And ah she has like she is acknowledging that she understands the winning side. She knows that God has intended to give the land to these people. And Rahab wants to be on the winning side. She does not want to be on the losing side. So I just want us to be encouraged there too that God side is always the winning side.
00:26:17
Speaker
So let's choose the winning side. Ask God to show you where he wants you to go and then go there. Whatever it is he directs us to do, that's the winning side. That's one of the the reasons why I want to help people find their purpose in life. Because whatever it is that your purpose is that God has designed for you, that is where you will be the happiest in your life. And I don't know about you, but I love to be the happiest I can be in my life. I don't wanna be miserable.
00:26:46
Speaker
There's a saying that says, life is terrible. I'm gonna paraphrase this because our grownups may know the big words that's used that's not very appropriate. Life is terrible and then you die. That's a very pessimistic way to look at things. And I want us to remember that life is not terrible. Life is wonderful. And if we want it to be as wonderful as possible,
00:27:12
Speaker
then we should seek to do what God has set out for us to do because God does not have miserable, terrible things for us in mind. Yes, we have to go through difficult things. And that is how we learn how to be the people God wants us to be.
00:27:27
Speaker
We cannot have ah forgiveness and learn how to be forgiving until we have cause to forgive people who have wronged us. It doesn't sound very exciting, but these things are how God is teaching us to be like Him.
00:27:44
Speaker
So I want us to be encouraged that if someone frustrates you, go to God with it today. Ask God to teach you what it is He wants you to learn. I know yesterday was a big day for that for me. So my personal application for this but is very much in effect yesterday.
00:28:01
Speaker
I spent a great deal of time ah with God yesterday um with him teaching me and reminding me about how to be forgiving and ah glory to God. I am feeling forgiveness toward people that that have hurt me very much over and over and over again. And those situations are not pleasant to be hurt by people over and over and over again. And yesterday we were given the direction to not hate people.
00:28:28
Speaker
And so God showed me that I was hating somebody. And I don't want to hate people because that's not what God wants us to do. I need to forgive, which as I have mentioned before, I'm not always particularly good at. But ah through God's grace yesterday, I am very happy to to tell you that Uh, I, I feel like I'm forgiving and forgiveness has is something that I was thinking yesterday is can be every day. Because every day we can be reminded or it may not be every day, but a lot of days that it's like changing the channel. Every time we get those thoughts where we are remembering the things that somebody has done to be hurtful or hateful.
00:29:17
Speaker
I want us to be encouraged to change the channel back to the forgiveness that God has advised us to do and to not hate. Yesterday, it was said in our Bible reading, do not hate people. So even if you're um not practicing not being mean,
00:29:37
Speaker
you can still be feeling hate or dislike toward people. And ah again, Jesus taught us that even just thinking about things means you've committed the sin. So ah we were also told in the Bible that we can grieve the Holy Spirit. We can make the Holy Spirit who is within us sad And I don't want to make God sad. i have I don't want to do that. God has done so many things for me in my life. But the last thing I want to do is to sit there and make God sad with my thoughts of not liking somebody. So I found that it was very relieving yesterday and it caused me a lot of joy.
00:30:20
Speaker
and a lot of peace, and that's not to brag about me because it's not me doing it, it's God. It's definitely not me. It was God. And I hope that you are encouraged in your life where somebody is hurting you to take it to God and ask him to help you change the channel to one of not hating, not disliking, and to be forgiving.
00:30:47
Speaker
because it is only through practicing that that we can get better at it. And he is growing you and he is growing me and he is producing ah mature fruit. It doesn't matter how old we are, whether we are seven, whether we are six, whether we are 50, whether we are 40, whether we are 70, he is still growing fruit in us. So that's what I wanted our takeaway to be today is our personal application ah is to not be afraid God has the battle, whether that battle is not hating, whether that battle is just getting through your day with whatever chores you have to do. May God open your eyes and may you see the things that God is giving you to do as your purpose. And may you glorify God in that and and to not be afraid in whatever it is that he is setting out for you to do.
00:31:41
Speaker
because if he he is on the winning side. So whatever it is he has set out for you to do, at you're you're You're on the winning side if you're doing what he wants you to do. Who doesn't want to win? Who doesn't want to be happy? You'll be the happiest if you do what God wants you to do instead of what we want to do. And and that was another thing I was thinking about yesterday, is that because I want to be the happiest I can be, that that is why I want to help people to do their purpose. And that's part of why I'm here today.
00:32:13
Speaker
and doing these daily readings is that I want to encourage people to be who God has made them to be, no matter how young you are, no matter how old we are.
00:32:26
Speaker
So thank you for joining me today. I hope that you feel encouraged and I hope that you are thankful that You are reading the Bible every day and I would like to thank you for ah clicking that like button wherever you are. I would like us to think of that not as a thumbs up sign but as a light.
