Episode Introduction and Concept

00:00:00
Speaker
Hello listeners, this episode was recorded several months ago and due to Tim's lazy ass, it was never released, so enjoy the continuity issues. It's time to play... SPIN THE WHEELS!
00:00:25
Speaker
Welcome to our Spin the Wheel episode where we each select a movie that fits a pre-selected category and let fate decide what movie we review next.

Clearing Misunderstandings about CGI Comments

00:00:34
Speaker
And the category for this episode was chosen by Chris, and that is creature features. And before we begin, Carrie, I think we owe Chris an apology because...
00:00:45
Speaker
Back when we were, I don't even know what episode we were recording. It might have been based on a true story. We called out Chris for hating on Jurassic Park CGI. And he gave me a call to action to go back and listen to that episode to find what he said about Jurassic Park.
00:01:04
Speaker
He did not say anything bad about the CGI. In fact, he came out and said that the CGI was incredible. It was after we talked about it and you said something. I remember getting so upset. It stung me so much that I still remember that conversation to this day. That said, we did comment about how the puppeteering was a little bit dated. There's some stuff that just didn't quite sit right on HD that just kind of looked funny. And we were even joking about the fact that a hand comes out and pushes the Raptor down in the kitchen scene.
00:01:33
Speaker
So, it has its moments, but Chris did not say anything bad about the CGI on record. On record, sure. And we'll remember that term, on record. Therefore, I didn't say anything bad. Nor do I recall saying anything off record, but that's another story. It hurt me. It wounded me deeply.
00:01:53
Speaker
So Carrie, put it in the bucket of things I have said that are borderline. It's roughly, it's like, yeah, it's roughly the size of a small above ground pool at this point that checks out. So as we jump into creature features here, Chris, why did you choose this category for our three listeners?

Exploring 'Creature Features' and Movie Selection Rules

00:02:12
Speaker
Because I love creature features. I absolutely love monster movies. Like I obviously love horror movies, but my favorite horror movies are
00:02:22
Speaker
Creature Features. Same thing goes for like watching the X-Files. Yes, there was the overarching story, but I loved the Monster of the Week episodes. Those are my favorite. Absolutely. So having the opportunity to pick whatever I wanted, I decided to go this route for Creature Features with a couple of small caveats. The only rules were it could be anything you want, scary, funny, you know, whatever G, R, whatever.
00:02:51
Speaker
just it can't be a ton of creatures. It has to be, you know, a small group or, you know, one. And yes, I am. I'm using my ownership of this pick. I get to veto movies where I feel like there's too many creatures. Just heads up. Gloves are coming off. Yes. Yes. If you pick something that has like thousands of little creatures, I'm going to veto it. You know, at least somebody's going to say one just to get your reaction.
00:03:20
Speaker
And I'm just going to instantly, instantly ban it and then ban that person from the podcast so they can never return again. Ever. Do it, Spaz. Do it for the greater good.
00:03:31
Speaker
How do you know it's going to be me? Because you always do something. All right. I'm going to go in order that I see on my list on Zencaster here. So Nikki, you are first.

Nikki's Pick: 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'

00:03:40
Speaker
How is your creature feature of choice? Okay. I have one that I think won't qualify. So I'm going to go with that one because I think no one else is going to pick it. Tell me if this is too many creatures. Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
00:03:56
Speaker
I'm the one with Kristen Swanson. There's more than one movie of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. There's only that one. That's the series. Oh yeah, the one with, is it? Paul Reubens? Luke? Luke? Who's Buffy though? Why am I playing? It's Kristen. I don't know her name, but I know Luke Perry's in it. And isn't it Rucker Howard plays the vampire? Yes, he does. Yeah, and Paul Reubens. What? Kristen Swanson, something Swanson, right?
00:04:24
Speaker
Is it Chris Swanson, Swanson? It's the B-Sausie! It's the Amsterdam! It's the Amsterdam! Anyways, I'm allowing it because even though there are other vampires, the main focus is on Dr. Howard's vampire, and Paul Rubin is a secondary guy. So it's totally okay in my book. Okay, cool. And I also love that movie.
00:04:46
Speaker
I do too, and I haven't seen it in like 30 years. That's why I wanted to pick it because again, I have another one, but I am 100% sure someone else is going to throw it up on the board. I have two others, but the one that I would have picked. I'm allowing vampires as a creature feature. Okay, cool. Thanks.
00:05:05
Speaker
I think the first time I saw this movie was with Chris and Spaz, back when we were in middle school or something. Oh, guys, you gotta watch this movie. I have it on VHS, I think. That makes sense. I recorded it off TV. That's so awesome. Good old days. All right, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is on the board. So next I have Dana.

Proposing 'Sonic the Hedgehog' and Other Picks

00:05:29
Speaker
Well, I'm not going to say my one just to get a laugh. And a groan, because I know it. No, because I'm not watching that movie if it gets approved. Just kidding, Glenn. We'll not make it count against him, but now I want to know what it is. Maybe wait till the end so that someone else doesn't steal it to put it on the board if it's something you want to watch. OK, I'll wait till the end on that one. I know your game, Dan.
00:05:56
Speaker
Tim knows what it is because I said it to him and he cracked up so it was worth it but I don't want to actually watch it so I'm not gonna actually say it for this. I am actually going to give a suggestion to
00:06:09
Speaker
Fix the horrible mistake of Super Mario Brothers, and I'm actually going to suggest Sonic. I'm in. I know it's a kids movie, but it's actually a pretty good movie. I heard it. I heard it's pretty good. It's pretty solid. I saw it. We have it. I have not seen it. It is the best video adaptation movie I have ever seen. More so than Silent Hill? Yes. More of the Detective Pikachu.
00:06:34
Speaker
It's way better than that. Are you kidding me? How dare you? Oh, dare you. I did not. I mean, Silent Hill was a good adaptation, but I just don't think of it in that genre. But all of them were horrible. And the only one that was serviceable was Detective Pikachu, in my opinion. So you're saying Sonic is above that. So it is serviceable. To me, it is. Yeah. OK. And I'm specifically saying the first one, not the second one, which just came out. Yeah. I've seen both. I've never seen either one of them.
00:07:04
Speaker
Alright. It has Jim Carrey in it, so that's why I watched it. And James Marsden, come on! Oh yeah, I forgot about him. I only watch James Marsden when he's roundhouse. Garage doors.
00:07:23
Speaker
You know what he's gonna do to the crew down in the bank? He's gonna cash a $10 bill and he's gonna hold the course and he's gonna fuck my ass! He's gonna fuck me with that roll of course! Right in the chili hole! Yeah, what a great movie. That movie's funny, so... It's not as good as Zero Trip, but it's up there. And for reppers, if everyone's listening in, it's like, what? Sex Drive. Yeah, it's Sex Drive, the movie.
00:07:49
Speaker
Normal non-pornographic like whatever you're gonna Google like just go look for the movie sex track It's classic. They're gonna Google something and it's gonna show him a bunch of like, you know No, I'm on IMDB. I pulled it up, but I've never heard of this. Oh my god Oh, he's hilarious in his sarcastic. So you should watch it if you enjoyed Euro trip, you'll find sex drive pretty fun
00:08:12
Speaker
It's a little more raunchy, obviously, but it's still pretty good. All right, I see Chris's name is next, but I'm gonna skip you, Chris, for last, because it's your category.

Carrie's Favorite: 'Alien'

00:08:19
Speaker
So I'll jump straight to Carrie. Dun dun dun! I know what you're doing. There's zero suspense, like one of my favorite movies, like literally my top two of all time is in this category. Not alien, the first one. Alien. My bad.
00:08:31
Speaker
I was half expecting one of you to just piss me off and pick it so I was gonna go for it and then I was going to make you all watch Predator, but I'll leave it with Alien, so. You should have doubled down, but like, first is Predator. Yeah, there you go. Aliens vs. Predator, Requiem. Requiem. Oh, god no. No, but those are like two of my, like, I love both of those movies, but of course I'm picking Alien. And you're all excited for Parade that comes out next month? We'll see. We'll see how I feel about it when it comes out, but you know.
00:08:59
Speaker
I mean, it's comments right there who it is. Yeah, that's I'm a little skeptical, but you know Ripley from life Except for from me, damn it. Oh god. Yeah So that takes us to border jams 2002 Spares aka Dan so

Dan's Choice: 'Pacific Rim'

00:09:22
Speaker
I'm still struggling, which one I want to watch, but so Chris would a Pacific Rim be good or. Oh man. So that, I was contemplating that. And I think, I think the first one I'm going to, I'm going to have to allow it because it's only a couple, a couple of them. Love it. The second one has a lot more. First one only has a few of the Kaiju. Yes. So I'm in. No. All right. So I'm not going to choose that.
00:09:54
Speaker
And I'm gonna go with Jeepers creepers I'm just kidding with specific rim
00:10:04
Speaker
I was like, I just really want to sing Jeepers Creepers. Sorry. Like, like I watch Jeepers Creepers and I don't hate it. But then I found out how nasty of a human being the director is. Yeah. And was like, oh, it's permanently ruined this movie for me. Yeah. Pacific Rim for sure. Hello. Yeah. Love it. Guilty pleasure movie. Watch it constantly. I watched it this morning.
00:10:23
Speaker
Have you watched the Netflix series? I have not, because I'm too scared to. It's pretty good. It's a weird animation style, but it's actually pretty good. I watched the second one, and that was why I didn't watch the animated series. The second one's pretty rough, but it's so bad. Yeah, sure, I guess. The first one's good because it's not a bunch of games, so I'm in the second one.
00:10:54
Speaker
Okay. Yes, I'm going next.

Nostalgia with 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles'

00:10:57
Speaker
So for shits and giggles, I was going to give an ode to Paul Rudd and suggest Mac and me. You can't find it anywhere. Oh, you can't, except for on the Conan O'Brien. He plays it forever. So I was disappointed. I couldn't find it. So that's off my board.
00:11:22
Speaker
God, I'm so glad right now. And then I was trying to think of what can I do here? And I wanted to keep it funny and lighthearted. And then I was thinking, okay, well, we already know how Chris feels about ET. So I'm not going to put that up there. And then I thought Harry and the Henderson's because they haven't seen God knows how long. Tim, I am impressed. That actually was one of my eyes rolling around in my head, but I didn't go with that one. Oh,
00:11:50
Speaker
The blob, you go in with a blob. Then, no, I was stuck on two. Now I'm going to toss up my first one. Okay. And you can let me know if it's okay or not. And if you veto it, then my second one is on point and there's no vetoing on this one. All right. So the one I chose is a childhood favorite of mine that I clicked at all the action figures, had them all, lost them all, but I had them all. Oh no.
00:12:20
Speaker
Oh, I am going with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to the secret of the ooze. Oh, I like it. Oh, yeah, man. There's only like six creatures, maybe seven in there. And Tim, don't worry, I had all the action figures myself. I still have a couple.
00:12:40
Speaker
That was his, we need the turtle thingy. I had Donatella who did back flips if you pressed it down. I was obsessed with him, so I had literally everything you could buy. There was so much for turtle toys. I had some. I know the Ghostbusters toys. So, Carrie, what the hell? What's your problem? I will save it if it gets picked. We'll put it like that. You got a problem with Vanilla Ice? I have so many problems. I went from his Halloween.
00:13:11
Speaker
I will I will save my history pick for it. But Dana has one hidden, too. So we'll talk all about the ones that we didn't choose. But I think the one I thought was going to get picked. Oh, I saw one. I still got to go. So let me disappoint

Chris's Nostalgic Pick: 'Tremors'

00:13:26
Speaker
you. Chris, let's rock this. So you guys managed to skip the one that I was going to pick. It's an older one. It's a good one.
00:13:35
Speaker
Spaz might enjoy it. Tim might enjoy it. Everyone's gonna hate it. No, no, no. We got a little Fred Ward. We got a little Kevin Bacon. We got Tremors. I was thinking about it. It was on my list of three, yeah. I was thinking about that too, yeah. I thought you'd veto it. I thought you'd veto that. There's only three of them. Yeah, there's only three.
00:13:57
Speaker
Oh, yeah, that's a solid choice. Love it. I purposely did not say that because I figured somebody would. I totally thought you were going to go with the thing, Chris. I thought about the thing. I also thought about Pumpkinhead. I also thought about the original Predator because everyone loves the Predator. Got to be Jappa. So, was everyone going to hate me if I said Beetlejuice? Yes. Because that's the one I was thinking of.
00:14:21
Speaker
I haven't seen it in like 30 years, but I remember loving it. It's hard because, like, is it a creature feature? I mean, creature feature? Yes! 100%! I'm dead, dude. Dude, you got the sandworm, man. Come on. That's a creature. Oh, that totally counts. You weren't sure that counts. But I'm giving, like, Buffy, though, which is like vampires. So I guess. That's a creature. Yeah, I was going to give Krampus a shout out. I love Krampus. I know.
00:14:51
Speaker
So good. So, all right. So what was everyone else's on their potentials that never came to light? Uh, Dana, what was yours? I just want to hear the groans because I would never choose this, but I was going to say caravan of courage, but there's probably too many of them for you. Yes. There's only one Gorex. There's only one Gorex. That's true. I've never seen this. Never heard of it. Oh my God. As a kid, I watched it all the time. I honestly don't even, I don't think I've ever heard of it either.
00:15:21
Speaker
Wait, Chris, you don't know what it is. Oh, it's an Ewok adventure. Yup. Oh, that thing. I'm over at your kind of hand of courage. Oh, God, I would have never done it, Trust me. I'm sorry. I did not know the proper name of that movie. It's just an Ewok movie. Yep. Oh, God, no. Well, no, because there's two of them, and they're completely terrible. They both suck. Yeah. Well, I enjoyed them back then. I just wanted groans.
00:15:46
Speaker
Oh my god. Oh, as a small child, I loved it. Like, but I haven't seen it since I was like four years old. So I'm very glad that I haven't seen it since I was like four years. I don't I don't ever want to see it again. No joke. I did have tremors on my list, though. And I don't know if I would want to watch this, which is why I didn't say it. But I was also considering Resident Evil, too. It's been such a long time. It's funny how like it's actually a classic movie. The first Resident Evil is what, 98?
00:16:11
Speaker
Yeah, probably around there. Yeah Monster squad for me holds a special place in my heart for Halloween Like I thought about it, but also there's a ton of monsters in it near the end So I I'd have to video it on that account. That's why I didn't pick it and arts
00:16:32
Speaker
I had one like that too, Dana, that, so I had King Kong on my list, but I didn't, I don't really, I'm like, ah, I don't think I want to watch that. Which one? Which version? No, the first one, not the black and white one. The black and white one? Yeah, the first one. Oh, okay. There's another one with Jeff Bridges from like 73. Yeah. Oh, well, I don't know. There's another one with Jack Black. I just don't like the Jack Black one. I remember seeing that and being like, oh, this is horrible. But maybe the- I like the more, the more serious one is that it's got Skull Island and stuff. I enjoy those.
00:17:02
Speaker
That's not the one with Jack Black, is it? No, no, no. That's Skull Island. That was the one with Samuel Jackson. Yeah. And oh, what's his name? John C. Riley. And John C. Riley and Loki's in it, isn't he? Yes. Yes. Thank you. We'll just throw it all out and watch Mighty Joe Young. I actually had Congo on my list and I actually had Anaconda on my list, too. I had Anaconda on my list as well.
00:17:28
Speaker
I had the mag on mine too. I love the mag. I actually have the bucket. It's not bad. I haven't finished it that though, but yeah. I don't know. I also, like I said, I had pumpkin head, but like, I really like pumpkin head. And I feel like, like a lot of people here would really hate pumpkin. I think me and you would be the only ones that enjoy that movie, Chris. Oh man. Stan Winston's character design. I think he actually directed that too, if I remember correctly. It's just, and Lance Henriksen, like, and aesthetically that movie is so just like grungy and creepy.
00:17:58
Speaker
And it's just, it's your typical eighties monster slasher flick. Absolutely. But I, I'm going to hold that, that guy back for Halloween. Gotcha.

Debating 'Creature Feature' Favorites

00:18:10
Speaker
I was going to put jaws of revenge on here, but I don't hate myself enough because I was like, lit your car. I would kill you. Michael Kane would hunt you down and slap you. You would.
00:18:21
Speaker
I also put Paul on this list because I remember seeing that movie and hating it, but everybody online says it's hilarious. And it's like one of the best alien creature movies. I'm like, I thought I hated this movie. So I was going to give it a shot. I've never seen it.
00:18:38
Speaker
Seth Rogen is an alien. Yeah, I reserve my assignment pack for Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead. Preferably more Hot Fuzz though. Yes, I love Hot Fuzz. It's just the one swan actually. Good old Lake Placid. Lake Placid and Betty White. Yeah, suck it. Yeah. I was thinking about that too, actually, Lake Placid. Lake Placid holds up. I mean, it's like, it's, yeah, because it's more of a black comedy and it's like, I just watched it like last year, I think. It holds up. I mean, the CGI is just hot trash.
00:19:08
Speaker
the character interaction, it's on point. If you want something a little bit more serious and you like creature features with gators, I recommend Crawl from 2018, I think. It's really good. Always going for the comedy myself. I don't feel like I see Nicky being like, yeah, we're going to watch a suspenseful horror movie with crocodiles. Right. No, thanks. It's good, though.
00:19:36
Speaker
So my backup pick, if TMNT did not count, was going to be another childhood favorite of mine. Didn't have the action figures because I don't think they had them, but something I rented every couple months. Earnest, scared, stupid. Oh yeah. I have it on DVD. Oh yeah. I think I do too. It's like the one earnest movie I really like. I feel like I've seen all of them and I can't remember any of them.
00:20:01
Speaker
Oh yeah, I totally saw him all, man. Jim Varney was great. I was a huge Jim Varney fan. I thought he was the funniest guy growing up. He was great. That man smoked like a chimney. No, seriously, if you read about him, that's unfortunate he passed away because of it. But he was like two plus packs a day. Good boy. Damn. Yeah. That's why he had that voice. I mean, well, you can tell from his voice. Yeah. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
00:20:32
Speaker
Don't do that again. That's what I bring to the table, folks. All right. Shall I give this wheel a spin? Yeah. All right. Let's do it. Remember to a complete stop. That wheel just like totally just kills your video stream. Yeah, it does. Yeah. Oh shit.

Reviewing 'Pacific Rim'

00:21:01
Speaker
Oh, is yeah baby Pacific Rim? Yeah. Going to watch him. Hell yeah. For the tenth time this month, I'm going to watch Pacific Rim. I haven't seen him forever. I can't wait to watch some giant mechs beat the shit out of some Kaijus. Yeah, it's definitely been a while for me too. It's like the only movie Tyler and I can agree on. So if anything, maybe I can. Yeah, I laugh. Like that is like the one that like will both be like, do we really want to watch Pacific Rim again? Yeah, let's do it.
00:21:31
Speaker
Like, out of all the movies, like... That's the one. No, there's plenty more, but I'm just, like, joking. Like, that is definitely one of the ones that, for some odd reason, is our guilty pleasure. Yeah, if I was ever sitting around and someone's like, hey, I'm going to throw in Pacific Rim, I'm never going to say, like, no. Right. Exactly. I don't know. I just rewatched Dread last night. It still holds up. Do you know Dread is 10 years old? The one with Carl Urban? Carl. Gross. It felt like it only came out the last few years ago. Where's my sequel?
00:22:00
Speaker
Yeah, I know. Seriously. The movie's so goddamn good. Man, I am pumped. I love Pacific Rim. I don't think I've ever seen it. What? No. So Pacific Rim is a 2013 American science fiction monster film directed by the one and only Guillermo del Toro. Yup. Starring a whole bunch of people.
00:22:22
Speaker
And it's good shit. We'll see. So diverse review, I know. Oh, yeah. Spaz, this was your pick, right? So why don't you hit us up with why you chose it and what your nostalgia review for it will be. I chose this movie because I did I see with you, Chris, or no? No, I saw with my dad. I saw with my dad then, too. I didn't see it in theaters either. I think we rented off like off Amazon. Yeah, I took my dad to see theaters then.
00:22:50
Speaker
And I just remember enjoying it because you got big ass friggin Megs kicking the shit out of monsters that come up from the ground of the ocean. And it's like it also has a little bit humor in there from the dude from It's Always Sunny. I can't think of his name right now. Charlie Day. Thank you, Charlie Day.
00:23:11
Speaker
And I don't know. I don't know why I chose this movie. I don't think you need a reason. Like, you remember something up. It's like, I want to see giant robots. I just want to see some ass kicking from robots to monsters and monsters to robots. So there you go. I'll give it an eight. Whoa. It's one of the few movies that does, like, colossal monster Mac things right. Like, obviously, we've seen the many renditions of Godzilla. And we won't talk about the one with Matthew Broderick. Oh. Yeah, exactly.
00:23:40
Speaker
I could see Spaz giving it a name. All right. Carrie, since you've watched this a thousand times. Yeah, I don't really know if this is a nostalgia score when I've literally seen it like today, but yeah, I obviously like this movie. I feel like that's not really up for contention here. I like Guillermo del Toro movies in general. All the acting is really good, except for weirdly enough, I thought Bernd Gorman in this movie is not fantastic, but we can talk about that later. Yeah, I went in with really low expectations for this movie when we saw it in the movie theater, but
00:24:10
Speaker
One of the only genres that scares me is deep sea horror or deep sea kind of scary tense movies.
00:24:16
Speaker
maybe it's an irrational fear of sea monsters. I don't know, but we went and we saw it. And I remember it was one of the last times they still had those rumble chairs in the theaters. Do you guys know? Oh my God, I remember those were like the last seats available. So we, we sat in them and I remember just like being legitimately freaking out like the entire time because like all of the startle effects and everything in this movie, like just like really were thrown out of proportion, but
00:24:43
Speaker
Yeah, this is enjoyable from top to bottom. I went in with low expectations and ended up really liking it. So I'm with Dan. I'm giving this an eight. Dan. Well, Chris, I know you've seen it before. What about you? Yeah, so I missed this one in theaters because like everyone's kind of eluding to like you saw the cover. You're like, OK, like the hell's this movie? Giant robots and monsters. And it's like Guillermo del Toro is attached to this. Like what the hell?
00:25:13
Speaker
And I think, like, and then, like, you see the list of people in it, and you're like, what the hell? This looks like, from the trailer, I was like, this looks so stupid. And then, like, I caught, like, we watched it. Like, my dad and I think, like, randomly. And I was like, why is this so good? I was like, this has, this has no right to be as good as it is. Like, on paper, this sounds, this sounds stupid. Yes. And then, like, they filmed it, and I was like, God damn it, this is really good.
00:25:42
Speaker
And I hope they make a sequel and they're dead. And I was like, why did you make the sequel so bad? So bad. I was like, look, you were literally starting on the bottom. It was literally you could have made a two hour movie of just monsters and mech guys fighting. And yet you then you made it all about the kids. And then, you know, yeah, fuck them kids. Like, I don't care. It's a Rihanna in one of these. No, that is battleship. Yeah. Oh, OK.
00:26:07
Speaker
That's what I have. Right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Which I have not seen, nor do I have any desire to see it. But anyways, I enjoyed it very much so. It has been quite a while since I have seen the original Pacific Rim. So right now, just off memory, I am going to give it a solid seven. Boom. Hey, look, I need to rewatch it to bring it up a little bit. I can't can't give it an eight. I mean, like I gave Back to the Future a nine. And I feel like I'm I just hmm.
00:26:37
Speaker
Mmm, I don't know if Pacific Rim is right within that wheelhouse of an eight and nine. I could be wrong. I could be wrong. Growing up to anybody else, I loved Godzilla movies. I don't know if that was an irrational thing as a child, but I watched all of them constantly. I was a big fan of Godzilla movies. See, I wasn't. I did not like them. I watched Transformers a ton, like the cartoon growing up. That was my only real introduction, like the giant mechs and stuff. Obviously, you got your Power Rangers and everything too.
00:27:05
Speaker
I don't know if that played a factor or Power Rangers. Super cheesy, super dumb. Everyone should have watched Beetleborgs. Oh, I did. So good. Big, bad Beetleborgs. Why do I remember this 30 years ago? Because it's an amazing song and that was a good damn show. And the ghosts look like Jay Leno. Yes, they did. Anyways, I don't know if that played a factor and when I finally was like, oh, Pacific Rim, why does this look like a Power Rangers knockoff? And then I saw it. I was like, why is it so good?
00:27:34
Speaker
Which, by the way, I didn't hate the new Power Rangers movie. I didn't hate it. I haven't seen it. It's got Billy from Stranger Things. I didn't realize it was a new Power Rangers movie. You should watch it. Me either. It's from like 2016, I think. I saw it. It was serviceable. There you go. That's a very good way. It's very serviceable. It's not great, but if you're looking for a revamp to see some actual decent CGI, that one works. It's not as good as the Power Rangers movie from 95, though.
00:28:02
Speaker
Oh, so good. There's no Tommy the White Ranger in it. No, man. I didn't even watch Power Rangers that much growing up. Oh, my God. I loved it. I watched like every episode. It's just very bizarre for me to see Amy Jo Johnson and stuff. I'm like, oh, the Pink Ranger. Yes. She will forever be the Pink Ranger. And she's like the only one out of that entire show that made it big. Did she, though? I mean, she was on quite a few things, like especially in the early 2000s, like I think Felicity.
00:28:32
Speaker
Oh, I never watched that. I watched Felicity and I still have no idea who you're talking about. Maybe it wasn't in Felicity. No, she might have been. I just might not know who you're talking about. Well, there's other people that need to vote about this. Let me go dig into the IMDB award. I did. She was. She would remember. Was she in Felicity? Yep. Wow. And I never watched Felicity either. And I'm very uncomfortable with the fact that I knew this. So why can't I remember this shit? But I can't remember where I put my car keys. You just remember people you find attractive. I don't know.
00:29:02
Speaker
That explains why I... no, don't mind. Anyway, Nikki, have you seen this film? I have seen this.

Discussing Jason Statham Movies

00:29:10
Speaker
Hasn't made me watch it, otherwise... I knew you! I never would have picked this on my own. You made me watch this, yep. Yeah, I honestly... this for some reason, like, I remember it, but I don't have any, like, strong feelings of...
00:29:26
Speaker
anything for this other than I remember Charlie Hunnam was in it and I really like Charlie Hunnam so I'm gonna give it a six. He must work out. Clearly.
00:29:39
Speaker
It's an easiest elbow in the first one. Yes, he is. There we go. Yeah, 100 percent. Carrie, you'll appreciate this. Like my dad and I watched Hobbs and Shaw. He's black Superman. Look, look, I don't watch the Fast and the Furious. I couldn't even tell you. I've seen it, but my dad like recommended Hobbs and Shaw. I was like, Dad, this looks so fucking stupid. And I was like, this looks so cheesy. And I'm like a year ago, he showed it to me and I watched it and I was like, I take that back.
00:30:05
Speaker
Yep, this was enjoyable as shit. I have seen it probably three or four more times since same exact story. But I love Jason Statham, like... Oh, me too. You're such a mess for me. See, everything I watch, I'm just like, oh, Jason Statham being Jason Statham in his Jason Statham movie. I'm going to enjoy this.
00:30:23
Speaker
Although I haven't seen that one movie because I think the premise is so dumb. The one where they've made so many of them. Where he can't, like, his heart rate can't slow down. Crank. Crank? Yeah, I love Crank. I know. Everyone loves him. The tips are the same thing. Nikki, Nikki, Crank makes no sense on any level and it is so outrageously stupid. But the fact of the matter is the guy gets his heart rate going by basically jumping himself with, like,
00:30:51
Speaker
the defibrillator makes me chuckle. That's why I can't watch it. It's just it's so off the wall. I thought you were talking about the transporter, which you're like a little bit more serious. Well, I haven't watched those either. I just like them when I see them in movies. Yeah, I'm pretty sure I've told the story, but we rented a Jason Statham movie called The Bank Job. Oh, boy. And I know I had no idea what to expect here, but we're you know, we're just just trying to find just a
00:31:18
Speaker
Just an action movie just to watch it. And Dana's mom's like, sure, I'll watch it with you guys, too. The first 15 minutes of this movie is like this giant orgy. I'm sitting here with my girlfriend and her mom. I'm out. I'm out of here. That's funny. I don't remember that part, but I like that. All I remember is the boob tassels. That's it. And I was like, what did you pick?
00:31:38
Speaker
The boob tassels. Not the Italian job. The bank job. The bank job. So a snatch is what I saw Jason Statham in that. I love that movie. I know. And Lac Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Lac Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is like one of his first roles. Yeah. All right, Dana. Pacific Rim, am I going to go on a limb and say you've never seen this?
00:31:59
Speaker
Why? I don't know why you would think that. Nope, never have. Not a movie I would have chosen, but I'm gonna go in optimistic and I'm gonna at least give it a five for now. That's Dan being optimistic as a five. Apparently there's a bunch of eye candy that I was unaware of in this film. Oh yeah, definitely.
00:32:18
Speaker
But Data is all about this, yeah. But Data, I think you might actually like this one. If you go in expecting like a not great, like light-hearted movie, like in that sense where it's just like ridiculous, it's so fun. I think you'll like it. See, I have a feeling that that'll happen. So that's why I'm like, I'm going in optimistic on this. Yeah. Five solid. Yeah. I mean, put it this way. It'll always be better than the fog or the core for you. Yes. I don't know that that was a good way to put that, but no, I'm genuinely- You can only go up.
00:32:47
Speaker
I'm genuinely optimistic about watching this. I was so close to picking the thing for this category. What? It's a good movie. At this point, John Carpenter owes us money. You know what? I'm taking my John Carpenter favoritism and I'm leaving. I'm going to go watch the thing. It was in theaters recently. You guys are missing out, man. The thing was a good movie. The thing was a good movie. I'll give you the fog. Wasn't that great?
00:33:13
Speaker
That's all right. Big trouble in little China is amazing. Yeah. No. Yes. That's where we disagree. No. That's the one. Anyways. Escape from New York. That, I'm just like, oh, I can't. Escape from New York, I don't like, honestly. It's one of the, like, I don't care for it. See, I don't mind that one. Escape from LA was- Don't talk about Escape from LA. That was a disaster. We don't talk about that one either. We don't talk about John Carpenter's vampires. Why didn't you hire Daniel Baldwin?
00:33:43
Speaker
That was bad. That makes me hurt on the inside. That was bad. James Woods looking for a paycheck and apparently- Wasn't Jon Bon Jovi the fan? No, that's a sequel. That's a sequel. They made a sequel. Like I said, Carpenter owes us money by how much we talk about him. I'm going to make an episode. It's just like Chris Rance about Jon Carpenter. Feel free to join me because I feel like I take up a huge time talking about Jon Carpenter. Wow. Take it back.
00:34:10
Speaker
So for me, I have not seen this movie. I never thought it could be good because I don't really care for Guillermo del Toro. I'm hit or miss on that guy. He's just less for

Skepticism and Giving 'Pacific Rim' a Chance

me. I'm happy in your face. He's quirky. You know, just like, ah, whatever. I can take him to leave him. The amount of throat punches you get, you're going to be struggling to breathe. I'm sorry. Were you how many minutes late?
00:34:34
Speaker
I'm sorry that I have shitty internet and I have to find a stupid fucking link that you sent out. April 30th. The link is pinned to the Discord channel. Taft, little wanker. Wait, is it pinned? I couldn't find it. It's under pinned at the top.
00:34:59
Speaker
We're in the pen, the pen icon is. You're a liar. So, yeah, I I never went out of my way to watch this. I think I've seen it on a couple of streaming services. I'm like, I don't really feel like it right now, but now I have to. So based off of everybody's opinions and scores, which are surprisingly higher than I thought they'd be for this film, I guess it can't be all that bad, right? Make sense.
00:35:20
Speaker
Chris spaz and carry the three of you guys have a pretty decently high rating for this film then Emphasis on the and carry so You guys like it
00:35:43
Speaker
I'll come in at a 6. I'll give you guys the benefit of the doubt on this. At a baby. The moral of the story is spazzing crests like shitty movies. Yeah, man. He called shitty movies Sunday for a reason, man. Yeah, right. All I know is my next picks for every other movie coming up is going to be a Guillermo del Toro movie just to spite Tim. Bring it on. I'm going to watch Hellboy so much. We're going to make him like him by the end. Oh, god. He made Hellboy? He made Hellboy. Not the one, not the one with David Harbor. Fuck that movie.
00:36:12
Speaker
No, the original one was Ron Perlman. Yeah, buddy. Yeah, that David Carver one was terrible. Old Army's really good. Yes, it was. Okay. Our nostalgia score comes out to an average of a 6.7, and IMDB is currently at a 6.9, so we're pretty close right now. Perfect. So we'll see. So let's go shut these mics off, check out this film, and come back with our rewatch review.
