IMDb has always been a critical resource to learn about films, cast and crew, and learn about trivia and read reviews. I've always loved their top 100 list to see what the people, not the critics, choose as the best movies of all time,

Tim picked the category "IMDb's Top 50 Movies", we choose our picks, and fate decides our nostalgia review. Which movie's did we pick and which one are we reviewing next? Listen and find out...

Audio Quality Warning

00:00:00
Speaker
Hey everybody, Tim here. Thanks for checking out this episode and I want to warn you in advance. This episode sounds a bit like hot garbage, partially because there were five of us in one room recording on a single microphone. That is not how I like to do things, we are typically in our own houses, but we had everybody over, minus Nikki, and I had this grand scheme of having everybody set up on these different mics, but everything failed right before recording, so I said screw it, we'll use one point right up in the air,
00:00:29
Speaker
and see how it goes, and it didn't go that well. So if this is your first time listening to us, please don't judge us too hard on this one episode. Go listen to something else that sounds much better. And for our OSW faithful, give us some grace. We'll return to some semi-high quality stuff in the future. So thanks for checking it out, guys, and we'll see you next time.

Introduction to 'Spin the Wheel' Game

00:00:50
Speaker
It's time to play. Spin the wheel! Oh, God. So excited.
00:01:13
Speaker
Spin the Wheel episode where we each select a movie that fits a pre-selected category and let fate decide what movie we review next. The category for this episode was chosen by me and I chose the IMDb Top 50 Movies list according to Bruiser ranking. So we have to each choose one movie from the top 50 for the Spin the Wheel. And Chris, you were voted on the island to go first.

Movie Selection: 'Seven'

00:01:38
Speaker
God damn it.
00:01:40
Speaker
So using the link that Tim provided us, everyone actually surprised when they announced it, I'm going with seven. Damn, that was my top one. And I appreciate the fact that Kerry wrote it with the actual seven in the name. Tell you, there are a reason just, I have not seen this movie in a very, very long time. It is unsettling at times, but it is a very good, I think I like it as a very good crime movie. It does, in my opinion,
00:02:09
Speaker
or slightly on horror to my stunt. But not really. It's more of a crime thriller. I think the acting is really good. I'm not the biggest fan of Captain Spacey's in it, but after things have come to light, but I do like Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman. Thank you. Yeah, Spacey's in it for like five minutes. Yeah. And we've got Gwyneth Paltrow. There's a lot of personalities. Ooh, I forgot she was in it. Who has not seen Seven out of the Spacey? Are you serious? There you go. Oh, Nicky. See? What? I've seen bits and pieces.
00:02:40
Speaker
So anyways, yeah. So we're just going to go kind of clockwise.

Discussion: 'The Prestige' vs 'The Illusionist'

00:02:45
Speaker
I'm going to go with the Prestige. I had you pay for gladiator. I was going to choose gladiator, but I haven't seen Prestige in one when I've seen gladiator recently. Is that Christopher Nolan? Yep. Yes. It's been a while since I've seen it. I feel surprised it's that old. It's because it feels like Santa. It's honestly not.
00:03:06
Speaker
I feel like the prestige came out at the exact same time as the illusion. Because I had this debate when my dad really enjoyed his prestige and he's like, oh, the illusion system. And I really like the illusionist. I do too. I do too. But it is two different stories. I mean, just magicians. Magicians is the only common thread. It evolves into like totally separate stories. I can't even remember aspects of the illusions. I can't tell you.
00:03:36
Speaker
See, I like the illusionist because of Ed Norton. I love that movie. Such a great movie. So you don't have to pick that name, fam. I love Ed Norton. I can take it over these albums. I don't know why I like him so much. It's a good actor. Yeah. But, yeah. Yes. Nice. So Seven is rating number 26 on our list. And then Prestige, I know it's higher up. Yeah, it's like in the 40s, I think. 36! 36, yeah.
00:04:00
Speaker
So I'll continue our counterclockwise. It's Nikki. All right.

Hopeful Picks: 'Goodfellas' and 'Two Towers'

00:04:03
Speaker
Well, I think this is my third time. So third time is a charm, hopefully. Carrie, go ahead. Put it on the board. Good fellas. One of these times, Nikki, you'll get it. Damn it. It's not. I'm just going to watch it. That sounds dumb to us. Yeah. Good fellas reading number 16. I'm going to Ray Liotta on.
00:04:29
Speaker
Yeah, that's right. Oh, stop it. Oh, I'm going to watch it. I'd rather play less. Karianne, it takes us to you. I'm still doing an Audible right now. I'm going to pick the one that I think I'm least likely to be able to put into another category that any of you are going to choose. So we all know it's down to three movies.
00:04:50
Speaker
Did it really fling? God! Oh my God, are you serious? It's a pen. Jesus Christ. She comes to my house and she paints us, paints my dog. Well then God, I didn't get on the couch. Or did I? I got on the dog. You got the dog. I'll watch the dog. You guys will kill again, baby. Yeah, that's really, this is the juicy marker.
00:05:22
Speaker
I'm going to do it. I'm going to do it. I'm going to make you all agree. Two towers. There it is. I like it. Oh, the most boring book ever. The most boring book, least boring movie, which is why I'm... Okay. I'll give you that. There's a movie scoring three books. Yes, it is.
00:05:40
Speaker
It's never ending. Lord of the Rings and Two Towers is number 10. So all three of the Lord of the Rings films are top 12. We made a really tough decision.
00:05:52
Speaker
Carrie goes from like the, I'm headed in, like super hot. It's all free. Oh yeah, oh can I, am I allowed? Oh yeah, definitely extended version. Like if Nicki's losing her mind. Because when Nicki hates you. They're fine, but I don't need to watch them again. Especially the director's version or whatever. I'm right there with you Nicki. If we can find it online. It is, it's on HBO, it's on HBO. It is on HBO. All right.
00:06:20
Speaker
Ah, my husband owns these. Yeah, I don't. He owns the directors, whatever, special edition. All right,

Finalizing Picks and Spinning the Wheel

00:06:28
Speaker
Dana. I am going to be the weird one, and I'm going to go with Back to the Future. Really? Yay. Number 46. I love that one. It's a great one. I feel like I watched all of them. I think I watched all of them, every good song. Five years, seven years. Oh, boy. I had Back to the Future on my list. I had the prestige on my list.
00:06:49
Speaker
I have three other films on my list. You're not just going to go for Star Wars?
00:06:57
Speaker
I mean, I wrote it down. I'm just kidding whether or not I want it. The way I saw this, y'all were never going to let me pick a category that wouldn't have had that in it. So I'm squeezing it in now. Fantasy movies? Who else here is going to vote for that category? Are you serious? If I ever won, I was probably going to leave mine. Very surprised by that. I don't think you guys watch a bunch of it. You're going to make me watch Willow. That's what's going to happen. What's that? You're going to make me watch Willow. Exactly. That's why I want to do fantasy movies. No, no, no, no. Fuck yeah. One day I want you guys to get a category of mine.
00:07:26
Speaker
Tim knows what it is. I refuse to say it out loud, but you guys will all be happy with it. One of these days it won't happen. All right. So we got one Christopher Nolan movie. I'm taking Dark Knight off my list. I would totally watch that. Back on your list. Take it off. It's like the Star Wars off of the Dark Knight off. You come back to the future. So I'm going to take Star Wars off my list because we have Back to the Future. We did one Star Wars.
00:07:56
Speaker
Can I have enough Star Wars? No, we can't. I can't. I mean, you look at my... Yeah, I know, yeah. I'm gonna go for it since you didn't and you didn't. Gladiator. Yes! I was hoping someone would have picked that one. Yes, it does. It's... I love that film. Oh, I want Star Wars. I haven't seen this movie in like a week or two. And I haven't seen it in a long time. And I can listen to that soundtrack for some time.
00:08:23
Speaker
I don't think I've seen this since high school, actually. Let's see, that's fine. I kind of hope it gets picked. Couldn't come up with 98. I knew it was right around like the matrix at all that time. I don't know. I just, I wish there was a lot. So our wheel is complete. Spin that shit. You want to give it the spin?
00:08:49
Speaker
I'll spin that wheel. Oh, God. Oh God. Oh, God. Oh, it keeps going. Back to the future. Back to the future. It's Dana.
00:09:15
Speaker
I thought it was gonna stop a good turn. Yeah, it started like really really slow here.
00:09:22
Speaker
Don't worry, nigga. Next time I pick a genre, I'm just going to pick my movies. Here's my list of movies I want you guys to pick from. Good show. Exactly. Have fun. This is my favorite movie. Why is Goodfellas under 19 times? Who makes that ride? Oh, Goodburger? Wait. No. So back to the future.

'Back to the Future' Nostalgia Discussion

00:09:51
Speaker
1985's American Science Fiction film with an 8.5. So let's quickly run through our nostalgia for this film. Get our nostalgia score and we'll go watch this one. We'll start with Dana, that was your movie. Yes. So why don't you tell us what your nostalgia score is and why you drove back to the future. I'm gonna do a 7. I'm gonna stitch something I remember watching with
00:10:15
Speaker
my dad all the time. It was just really good memories of it over and over again. And then I think I was thinking about it because my brother just got him the movie script for it. And I thought that was really cool. So I don't know if I was just thinking about it, loved it. It's one of those movies you can just keep watching over and over again and it's still good no matter what. And it'll make us all feel old at the same time. Wow. As fast as it was in a state of life. I live in a state of 20s. I'm never going to leave my 20s. Dan Dan wasn't the not also.
00:10:44
Speaker
We'll jump to Carrie next. Yeah, I watched this a lot as a kid. But that's also because my parents are young, so this was their favorite movie when I was a kid. For that reason, I like this movie a lot. It's not like in my top 10 faves by any means, but it does have a special place from an nostalgia perspective. I'm gonna give it a seven. Yes. And enthusiastic though. There it is.
00:11:06
Speaker
All right, now we'll go to Nikki. Okay, I actually can't remember the first time I've seen this movie, definitely as a kid. Consistently watch it probably every five to seven years. It's a great movie, I'm giving it to Seven. Spaz, are you gonna buck that trend? Nope, Seven.
00:11:23
Speaker
No, it's pretty much what everyone here has already said. I remember watching with my dad growing up and loved the soundtrack. It's a great soundtrack. And how can you not love Einstein, right? Einstein was a great dog. What a good puppers. First dog to ever go through time travel. Love it.
00:11:43
Speaker
Chris, you're up. Funny enough, outside of everyone's individuals, I wasn't picked 7-2 before that trend started going. It's just one of those movies, it's just fun. I remember watching this, you know, growing up and stuff too, and I've enjoyed it. I went as Doc Brown for Halloween in college, and my Wi-Fi is set up to be Doc Brown for the 2.4 and DeLorean for the 5.
00:12:08
Speaker
So needless to say, I do enjoy it. It's like, you know, I'm not going to go all my way every time, but it does have a lot of special memories and stuff. So I am going to buck your trend. The 7.5. No, I'm going to come in within eight. I really enjoy this film. It's pure sci-fi fun. It's funny. It's one of those films that obviously it's back in, what was it, 85? 85, yeah.
00:12:37
Speaker
It's just a very 80s film. I love the fact that they just, you know, travel back and just kind of keeps that whole era. They just bring that era to life. It's very funny. The music is on point, not only with Ellen Sylvester's soundtrack, but you got Huey Lewis. It's just a great classic film of really of all time, especially from a sci-fi genre.
00:13:05
Speaker
in the 80s. Well, a lot of sci-fi movies in the 80s are just trash. Yeah. Howard the Duck. That's what you got. I found all the sci-fi movies I think in the 80s. You pick Howard the Duck. What the fuck's wrong with you? A lot. But it's just Michael J. Fox is great. Christopher Lloyd is great. Even though, you know, Christopher Lloyd plays this old
00:13:29
Speaker
How old is he in this film? He's not that old. He's like in his 40s. He's younger than that. Maybe 30s. No, no, he's older than that. I think he was in his 40s because his first roles were on Taxi. He was 30s then. I'm sorry it's HSU. Especially if you're worried about time traveling to get a knock on your head bite.
00:13:55
Speaker
Uh, and we said 85, and his birthday it's in 38, so yeah, you want the blue. But yeah, this is just a, it's a great film, a lot of fun, and I think you were mentioning earlier, Nicky, the films. So the films that made us on Netflix, I think they have a Back to the Future one. Yeah, they do, movies that made us. It's just fun to kind of dive into this a bit more, and how they pulled all the better, but it's great, so I'm looking forward to it. I think we have the blue ways.
00:14:25
Speaker
I mean it. So to bust those out and enjoy the heck out of this. So that combined, our nostalgia score is a 7.2 compared to IMDB's 8.5. Let's see if that changes at all. We can watch this. Nostalgia hits us in the feels. Right in the feels. Right in the feels. So all right, we'll turn off these mics and go check it out.
