Personal Burnout Experiences and Early Recognition

00:00:48
Adam Pike
More specifically, you know, talking about recognizing burnout, how to spot it, how it creeps up on you and why it's important to address it before it takes over. Now, why I'm talking about this this week is because I feel like I was heading in that direction last week.
00:01:06
Adam Pike
and it And like the way I am, I need to grind, grind, grind, hustle, hustle, hustle. And sometimes I just don't take time to shut my brain off from work. And I know that that was definitely affecting parts of my life. So I want to talk about this with you guys because I don't want you guys to get get there. I don't want you guys to ah feel that burnout

Critique of Hustle Culture and Mental Health

00:01:31
Adam Pike
phase, you know? So if you're someone that's feeling a little bit drained lately,
00:01:35
Adam Pike
Or maybe you're, you're just feeling stuck and wondering why, you know, you're busy, but you're not productive. This episode is definitely for you. Okay. So let me just start with something that we've all heard before. Hustle, hustle harder.
00:01:52
Adam Pike
Right. Hustle harder. it's It's everywhere. It's on social media. Uh, it's in motivational speeches that you listen to business seminars. Like everyone's telling you that if you want success, you got to be constantly grinding, right? That's what they tell you. But here's the thing, like hustling 24 seven is not the recipe for success. Yes. You might get success if you're hustling 24 seven, but what's it going to lead to? It's going to lead you straight down a path to burnout. And don't get me wrong.
00:02:22
Adam Pike
I'm all a about working hard, but hustle culture, the one where you're expected to work nonstop and put everything else on hold can be toxic, right? Why? Because it often leads us to forget something that's really important, our mental health. And if you don't prioritize this,
00:02:44
Adam Pike
It's not good. It's not good. nice It's not good for me. Like maybe you don't need to prioritize, geez, prioritize your mental health and you're just totally fine. But for me, like I need to take care of that because if not, um, I just get focused on one thing and it it just leads to burnout, right?

Recognizing Burnout: Signs and Symptoms

00:03:04
Adam Pike
We've all been there like riding that high,
00:03:06
Adam Pike
of pushing through work after work, staying up late, checking tasks off, feeling like we're finally making progress, only to realize that, you know, we've neglected our physical health, our relationships, and most importantly, our peace of mind, right? We just, we just grind, grind, grind. And all the things that are actually important to us, we just neglect because we think we got to keep grinding.
00:03:34
Adam Pike
Not good guys, trust me, not good. So I wanna ask you, I wanna ask, I want you to ask yourself something right now, okay? When was the last time you really checked in with yourself? Like I mean really checked in, not just like how productive you've been or how many things that you've crossed off your to-do list, like how are you feeling emotionally, physically and mentally? I want you to think about that.
00:04:04
Adam Pike
Cause that's super important. We, we, we often talk about, you know, checking in with our partners, seeing if everything is good. But when you ever checking with yourself, when you really like ask yourself these hard questions, like burnout isn't something that it just happens overnight. It's a slow build. At first you might feel, you know, energized by the hustle. Yeah. Getting everything done. Everything just seems exciting. You're, you're just on fire, but eventually.
00:04:31
Adam Pike
without proper rest, boundaries, or time to recharge, that fire definitely starts to fizzle out, don't it? I've definitely dealt with this. ah lets let's break Let's break down a few common signs of burnout. um These are things that I was definitely kinda having happened to me as of as of lately, to be honest. So if you're checking off more than one of these,
00:04:58
Adam Pike
It's definitely time to pause, take a step back, and prioritize your mental health.

Strategies to Combat Burnout

00:05:04
Adam Pike
Constant fatigue. You feel tired all the time, even after even after a full night's rest, and your energy levels are just low, no matter how much you sleep. You're just always tired. that's that's That's one sign. Emotional exhaustion.
00:05:20
Adam Pike
You're just feeling drained, disconnected, or just numb to things that it used to excite you and motivate you. Like you just have no feelings. You're just blah. I feel like I was, I feel like I was that as of recently, 100%, um, decreased productivity. That's this is another one. Uh, even if you, you know, even if you're working more than ever,
00:05:47
Adam Pike
you're not seeing the same results. You might be busy, but you're not really making meaningful progress. Now I kind of noticed this too, because I used to like, I used to just wake up super early and just do video after video after video, just groan, groan, groan. But like, I don't know, recently it's like I'm doing things, but I'm not doing as much as I used to do. And it's um almost like I'm just like procrastinating and I don't know, maybe maybe I was experiencing this too, but I'm glad we're talking about this, honestly, because this, this is like a therapy session for myself. Uh, you're, you're irritable. Like you're just, you're, you're in irritable a lot more. You snap more often and you feel agitated. Um, you have a short fuse, even with the small things, you know, your patients is just very short. Um, this could be another thing feeling overwhelmed.
00:06:40
Adam Pike
You know, the to do list just keeps growing and you feel like you're just constantly chasing your tail. Like nothing seems to get done. There's just always something and and you just start feeling overwhelmed. This could be another sign of burnout. Lack of motivation.
00:06:55
Adam Pike
You know, remember the passion that used to have for, for the, for the, you know, the project you were working on or, or going to the gym. That motivation just feels like it's just gone, you know, tasks that used to excite you now just feels like, uh,
00:07:12
Adam Pike
ah there's a burden to do, you know? So, like, if you're recognizing any of these signs in yourself, trust me, you're not alone. Burnout is a real and common issue, especially when we are trying to keep up with endless demands of the hustle culture, right? And, like, I find, especially for me, because, you know, I work, I work for, I basically work for myself, but, like, I always gotta,
00:07:41
Adam Pike
be go, go, go, go, go. I gotta be cur like like talking to brands, reaching out to brands. you know I got scripts coming to me all the time. like I really need to be on all the time and I really need to motivate myself all the time and that's why I just i feel like if if I stop and and i and i don't if if I just take a break,
00:08:03
Adam Pike
You know, I'm going to lose that momentum and I just don't want to do that. So, you know, trust me, guys, I'm I'm learning. I'm learning as I go. I'm trying to find the balance. And this is why I do these.

Unrealistic Expectations and Finding Balance

00:08:16
Adam Pike
This is why I do these episodes with you guys, because I feel like as I'm going through things and as I am learning,
00:08:23
Adam Pike
And then as, as I am growing, I just share things with you as I'm going through it. And that's why I kind of made this podcast. So I hope you guys are enjoying these episodes, but, um, yeah, let's get, let's get back to the business. So, um, okay. So now that we're now that we, we know what what burnout looks like, let's dig into why it even happens in the first place.
00:08:48
Adam Pike
Like a big reason is unrealistic expectations, either the ones we put on ourselves or the ones that society kind of imposes on us. Like we live in a world where success is often measured by how much you are producing, how many hours you are working, how many things you can juggle at once. But here's the truth.
00:09:12
Adam Pike
more doesn't always equal better. you know We think that if we are constantly pushing and grinding, um You know, we are doing something right, but in reality, our bodies and our minds, we need that balance. We need that rest. We need time for reflection. We need, we need that space to recharge because without it, we can only go so long before the energy and that, you know, that motivation just starts to fizzle, fade, gone. Right. So.
00:09:43
Adam Pike
Like how do how do how do you recognize burnout early? and how do you And how do you avoid it? So how how do we ah avoid burnout and catch it before it completely takes over? but that's That's the question here. The key is self-awareness and boundaries. Start by checking in with yourself regularly. Like journal a little bit. If if if you don't like just having a simple conversation with yourself, you you can you can journal.
00:10:13
Adam Pike
You know, write down like how how just how how you're feeling. put it Put your thoughts onto paper. Ask yourself how you are feeling. Like really, how you are really feeling. And make that a habit.
00:10:25
Adam Pike
You know, are you constantly exhausted? Are you getting short with people around you? Are you having trouble focusing there? These are all signs of things that, you know, might be getting at a balance. And when you answer these questions and you're like, Oh shit, like, you know, haven't really been connecting with my girlfriend lately. Haven't really been giving her the attention that I need. Shout out Rebecca, if you're listening to this, but you know,
00:10:54
Adam Pike
and Get a check in with yourself sometimes and ah Just kind of give yourself a boot in the ass because sometimes it's just You you need that ever now and then okay now one of the most important steps is Setting clear boundaries with work social media and even the people around you like learn learn how to say no but two When just to protect your time, I always used to be that guy that would just say yes to everything but now it's like No, I like I'm not doing anything. if I don't want to go somewhere. No, no, I'm staying home and watching a cozy movie and eating snacks on the weekend. I'm not I'm not coming to your party. No, I'm just kidding. I do like to party, but you get what I'm saying. um Just learn to say no sometimes. You don't need to do everything all the time.

Importance of Rest and Self-Care

00:11:45
Adam Pike
Another tip, you know, prioritize rest.
00:11:49
Adam Pike
In a world that keeps telling you to keep going rest is often seen as lazy, unproductive. But trust me, let me tell you, taking breaks is not only essential for your mental wellbeing. It's essential for long term productivity. Okay. So,
00:12:10
Adam Pike
You can't, guys, listen, you can't pour from an empty cup, right? So you you really need to take time for yourself to recharge and reset. And finally, you need to embrace the idea of progress over perfection. you don't You don't always have to have everything perfectly. Focus on doing the things that matter most to you and remember that it's okay to slow down sometimes.
00:12:38
Adam Pike
like and it's It's okay to not have everything figured out. ive I talked about this in the last podcast. like You don't need to have everything just perfectly like done perfectly. You don't have to have all the answers. okay Listen guys, like burnout, it's, it's real. And it's something that a lot of us will experience at some point in our lives, especially in today's hustle driven world.

Encouragement and Motivation

00:13:03
Adam Pike
But the good news is that by recognizing the signs early, setting boundaries and making self-care a priority priority, you know, you can, you can prevent it from happening and taking over.
00:13:16
Adam Pike
Right that's why i'm doing this podcast and hope that you know you guys listen to this and she's like damn. He's talking some shit i am experience that i'm experiencing this ocean my husband ah he's he's definitely. Experiencing this i'm gonna i'm gonna send his pockets he needs to listen to it we need to get on top of the shit. You know that's that's why i'm doing this so like.
00:13:39
Adam Pike
Here's a little challenge for the week. Do a quick mental health check-in. Just take 10 minutes today to reflect on how you're feeling mentally, emotionally. Are you burning out or are you thriving? If you're feeling a little bit burned out, give yourself the permission to just slow down, take a break. That's it. It's that simple. But remember, you can't do your best work if you're not taking care of yourself.
00:14:07
Adam Pike
that's just that's just some real facts right there sometimes we need a vacation you know that feeling when we go on vacation and then we come back and we're like yeah I'm and um i'm a new person um'm ah um'm ah I'm a new man you know and you're just so motivated because you took that time to just reconnect Just relax, you know, blow off some steam and then you come back and you're better than ever, right? Listen, guys, like I said, I want to repeat this again. You can't do your best work if you're not taking care of yourself first. Thanks for tuning in to this Mental Monday. I'll be back next week.
00:14:47
