Introduction to Methylation

00:00:00
Speaker
Chemically speaking, methylation is the process where a single carbon and three hydrogen atoms, known as a methyl group, are added to another molecule. Now this is a very important biochemical process. It happens probably millions of times in the body every second and it has important roles in the immune system, in energy production, DNA expression, detoxification of heavy metals and chemicals,
00:00:27
Speaker
hormone and neurotransmitter metabolism and tons of other vital functions.
00:00:34
Speaker
Why am I bringing this to your attention?

Methylation in Autism

00:00:37
Speaker
It is because a large body of evidence has already shown that many autistic children have significantly impaired methylation. Some of the most common factors that can disrupt your child's methylation processes include certain genetic variations, for example, the MTHFR gene and certain polymorphisms there, certain nutrient deficiencies or imbalances.

Factors Affecting Methylation

00:01:00
Speaker
For example, vitamin D12 and folate deficiencies, oxidative stress and inflammation can impair methylation, heavy metals and chemical toxins and pathogens.

Methylation and Dietary Recommendations

00:01:11
Speaker
So as you can see, when you look at these factors that can disrupt methylation, you can see that a lot of the same culprits are coming up again and again and again. So pathogens, heavy metals and chemical toxins, inflammation,
00:01:27
Speaker
oxidative stress and in this case even certain nutrient deficiencies can contribute to impaired methylation.

Intervention Strategies for Autism

00:01:34
Speaker
So this is why I believe it's important to at least watch this particular module at least once
00:01:42
Speaker
because then when you see, for example, a recommendation for removing certain things from the diet or cleaning up the environment or adding certain supplements, you will see that these actions that you will take, they will have so many different positive benefits directly and indirectly. This is something that I know I've probably am repeating quite a lot in this module, but I think it just bears repeating again and again
00:02:11
Speaker
because there's so many potential issues that autistic children could be suffering from and there's relatively few things that you need to do on your end to address so many of them, again, directly and indirectly.
