Importance of Gut Bacteria

00:00:00
Speaker
So the function of these gut bugs in our digestive tracts are actually very wide ranging and very important for our survival, for our development, and just to be healthy in general.

Gut's Role in Nutrition and Defense

00:00:14
Speaker
So the bacteria in our gut, they help us with nutrient absorption. They help to maintain the gut barrier.
00:00:22
Speaker
They keep the harmful bacteria in check so it's inevitable that we will have pathogenic bacteria harmful bacteria coming to the gut environment and if our microbiota is strong
00:00:38
Speaker
if it's well balanced, it should be able to keep those harmful bacteria in check. It is when the microbiota is disturbed and that these harmful opportunistic bacteria can then proliferate and cause us problems.

Microbiota's Impact on Brain Functions

00:00:55
Speaker
So other things the microbiota do for us is they produce vitamins and other beneficial substances, like I mentioned, short-chain fatty acids.
00:01:04
Speaker
And another fascinating thing is that these bacteria produce neurotransmitters and other similar molecules which exert an effect in our brain and central nervous system. So many of us think that our neurotransmitters, these chemicals are produced in the brain, but more recent research has found that a lot of serotonin is made in the gut, melatonin is produced in the gut by these bacteria,
00:01:30
Speaker
And these are neurochemicals, brain chemicals that are essential for our functioning, for a feeling of well-being, for social interaction, to be able to fall asleep and stay asleep, things like that.

Gut Health and Immune Regulation

00:01:43
Speaker
Other things that the microbiome ought to do is they detoxify certain harmful substances
00:01:49
Speaker
and they play a large role in regulating the immune system. And as you will find out later, this has tremendous implications for health, especially for autistic children.
00:02:01
Speaker
And the reason I say that is because roughly 70% of the immune cells in the body are located in and around the gut. So very simply put, a disrupted gut equals more often than not a disrupted immune system. Again, we will cover this topic in a lot more detail shortly.
