Introduction and Purpose of Psalms

00:00:02
Speaker
Hello everybody, today is Wednesday, it's March 26, 2025, and you are here with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching. We are here for our daily Bible reading, which we are doing every day through the Day by Day Kids Bible, which has been written by Karen Henley.
00:00:24
Speaker
If you have a calendar that you are using to keep track of your daily Bible reading, it's time to get that out because you're about to hear the Bible today. I have my sticker on there for today.
00:00:38
Speaker
Thank you so much for being here, whether you are watching or whether you are listening. I am so glad you are here. We are reading through the Psalms right now, and I don't know about you, but I am needing them.
00:00:51
Speaker
i never knew I needed the Psalms like I do.

Personal Challenges and Faith

00:00:56
Speaker
I have been dealing with ah my refrigerator and yesterday my enemy was my refrigerator and my enemy is still my refrigerator because i am trying to ah get one that actually fits through my front door.
00:01:12
Speaker
And I have plenty of space once it gets into the house, but I didn't realize that I had a counter-depth refrigerator because it already sticks out past my counter.
00:01:23
Speaker
So logically, I thought, well, I don't have counter-depth because it's not even with my counter. ah But apparently I have a counter-depth. So... God is good all the time.
00:01:33
Speaker
And I went to go look at the refrigerator I thought I was going to get yesterday, and I hated it. So I have been looking at refrigerators, and I have really needed the Psalms today.
00:01:44
Speaker
Because I have, remember when I was describing, like when we get all like, ah, ah, ah. Well, that was me this morning. And I said, be still and know that he is God.
00:01:56
Speaker
Be still. And then i I said, I'll probably feel better after I read the Psalms. today. And I did. So I don't know what you're going through, but everybody's usually got something that's on their mind.
00:02:09
Speaker
And today the Psalms are so lovely. i can't wait to get started with them. And since I'm always running behind, let's get started with those so I can head on off to work today.

Insights from Psalm 1

00:02:24
Speaker
Our first psalm is coming to us, ah and it's number one. This is the very first psalm in the book today. And we are starting a new section in our book of Psalms. Remember, we have about two weeks of psalms that we're going to be reading.
00:02:37
Speaker
And don't know if it's every single psalm because, you know, they're written chronologically. And so that means that the numbers are out of order. And so I don't know that we're reading every single psalm in in the entire book of Psalms.
00:02:53
Speaker
But these particular section of Psalms is entitled Songs About Good and Bad. Now that doesn't sound like it would be very applicable, ah you know, to my refrigerator situation.
00:03:04
Speaker
But you know, the Psalms incorporate a lot of different things, even though it's been categorized as a Psalm about good and bad. They are really applicable because that's the way God's Word is.
00:03:16
Speaker
God's Word is applicable every single day. may have mentioned that a time or two for this event. And that is what I love about it and why i am so passionate about this event.
00:03:27
Speaker
Is that even in my refrigerator, there is a psalm or a passage every day that God has just structured us right into his perfect timeline. So here we go.
00:03:38
Speaker
Psalm 1, a tree by the water. Good things come to people who don't do what bad people tell them to do. They don't follow sinful people.
00:03:50
Speaker
And they don't make fun of others. They are happy to follow God's way day and night. They think about what God says. They are like trees growing by the river.
00:04:04
Speaker
And they give fruit at the right time. Their leaves never dry up. Everything they do turns out good.
00:04:16
Speaker
It's not this way for sinful people. They are like dust that the wind blows away. and they will not be So they will not stand before God and they will not be with good people.
00:04:29
Speaker
God watches over people who do what's right, but the path of sinful people will not last.
00:04:37
Speaker
Guess what? Everybody who's listening here, we're not part of the sinful people. We are all sinners, but what this is referring to is people who have no intention of doing what God says.
00:04:51
Speaker
But we do. That's why we're here. That's why we're motivated to read the Bible every day. And we spend a lot of time thinking about what God says in his word. I know we do. Because you are listening here regularly.
00:05:04
Speaker
So we are... part of what they are describing in Psalm 1 where it says that we are happy to follow God's ways and day and night we think about what God says and we are like trees growing by the river.
00:05:22
Speaker
We give off fruit at the right time, just the right time.
00:05:29
Speaker
Our leaves never dry up. Everything we do turns out good. How many times have we said that this year? That God is working everything for good.
00:05:42
Speaker
So I am in God's perfect timing with my refrigerator and and everything will turn out good. It made me feel so much better just reading that first Psalm. How about you?
00:05:53
Speaker
Whatever it is that that you're working with, God will work through it and everything. He will work good into it. Isn't that awesome?

Reflections on Psalm 36 and Care

00:06:02
Speaker
Oh, I'm so, I'm so encouraged.
00:06:07
Speaker
The next Psalm is Psalm number 36. This was written by David and it's entitled, Like Strong Mountains.
00:06:18
Speaker
Sinful people don't think God is important at all. They're too proud to see their own sin. Their words are lies. They don't do what is wise or what is good.
00:06:30
Speaker
Even when they lie in bed at night, they plan to do wrong things. God, your love is as great as all of space.
00:06:42
Speaker
Your promises reach up to the sky and the right things you do are like strong mountains. The way you are fair is like a deep sea.
00:06:56
Speaker
God, you care for both people and animals both. Your love never ends. It is greater than the greatest riches.
00:07:09
Speaker
Some people are great and some are not, but all are safe in the shadow of your wings. You have plenty in your house to feed them and you let them drink from your wonderful rivers.
00:07:26
Speaker
We see light because of your light.
00:07:32
Speaker
Keep loving the people who love you. Don't let proud people come against me. Sinful people fall down. They get thrown down and they can't get up.
00:07:46
Speaker
But not us. Nothing can keep us down, right? Nothing. Not even a refrigerator, not car troubles, not work troubles, not people who are treating us unfairly.
00:07:57
Speaker
God wants us to treat people fairly. God, the way, let's see, where does it say? The way you are fair is like a deep sea.
00:08:09
Speaker
God loves to be fair. He wants us to be fair. He wants us to treat people fairly. He wants us to do things that are right. Fair means to be equal.
00:08:22
Speaker
And he wants us to treat people equally. He wants us to be good to people.
00:08:31
Speaker
And God's love never ends, no matter what. No matter how many troubles we have as we are working through them and God is working good into them. No matter what, his love never ends, no matter what we are facing.
00:08:48
Speaker
Some people are great and some people are not, but all are safe in the shadow of your wings, Lord. Oh, I'm so grateful. We don't have to be rich famous person person for God to care about us.
00:09:05
Speaker
He cares about animals and people both. I love that. That's right. We do know that he cares about animals. Do you remember when the angel was standing there in front of the donkey and the donkey didn't want to move? He was going to the left or to the right and he stopped and then finally God gave him the power to speak.
00:09:26
Speaker
because he saw the angel and he said, why are you whipping me for no reason? Have I ever done this to you before?
00:09:33
Speaker
God cares even about the animals. And the y angel even said that if he if the donkey had passed by me because you were whipping him, I would have let him go, but I would have killed you. Because God cares about the animals too.
00:09:52
Speaker
The next Psalm is Psalm 37.

Trusting God's Timing in Psalm 37

00:09:56
Speaker
And this is ah only part of the psalm. It is one through 11.
00:10:05
Speaker
Like the sun at noon, don't worry because of sinful people. Don't wish you were people. You were like people who do wrong. They will dry up like grass and they will die like green plants.
00:10:21
Speaker
Trust in God and do what's good. Live and enjoy being safe. Be glad in God and then he will give you what your heart really wants.
00:10:33
Speaker
Choose to always follow God. Trust him and he will help you. He will make the right things you do shine like the sunrise. He will make your good ways shine like the sun at noon.
00:10:48
Speaker
Be with God and be still.
00:10:53
Speaker
Be quiet. and wait for him. Don't worry when sinful people get away with doing wrong. Keep away from anger and don't worry.
00:11:05
Speaker
It only leads to sin.
00:11:09
Speaker
Sinful people will not get God's riches. But people who trust in God will get all God has for him.
00:11:18
Speaker
Someday sinful people will be gone. Even if you look for them, you will not find them. But God's people will always have his riches. They will enjoy peace.
00:11:33
Speaker
That one is loaded. Oh my goodness. Oh my goodness. Did I not say that I was just needed to be still and know that he is God?
00:11:47
Speaker
I love this one. This is a great Psalm, Psalm 37, and this was only verses 1 through 11. So if you are hungry for more of God's word, head up your big Bible and check out all of Psalm 37.
00:11:59
Speaker
I did not have time. i did not make time to do that today. I just read our entries for today. But there is so much in here. Don't worry because of sinful people and don't wish you were like people who do wrong.
00:12:13
Speaker
Sometimes it can seem like people who are sinful are just what we call getting away with murder. It means that no matter what it is they seem to do wrong, they just never seem to get in trouble for it.
00:12:25
Speaker
And that can really bother us, doesn't it? If we see people over and over doing wrong things, we think, what's going on? Why aren't they in trouble? Don't worry about them. God will take care of everything.
00:12:38
Speaker
It may not be in our timing, but God will take care of it.
00:12:44
Speaker
Trust in God and do what's good and live and enjoy being safe. Worry about what you are doing. I will worry about what I am doing. Don't worry about the people who don't have any um care about doing wrong and and be upset that they're just not getting what's due to them.
00:13:03
Speaker
God will take care of that. Be glad in God and then he will give you what your heart really wants. And that is true. we have read this elsewhere in in the Bible. Not yet, but um trust in the Lord.
00:13:16
Speaker
And he I can't remember how the verse goes, but it's, he will give us our heart's desire. And it's because our heart will then be in alignment with his. So it's kind of like a chicken and the egg thing where it's like, well, did he want for us to have me to have this or did I want it first?
00:13:33
Speaker
He wants us to have it and then he will create the desire and then he will give us that desire because it's what he really wanted for us to begin with. And then we finally came around to seeing, hey, this is what I want. And then we're just all amazed.
00:13:45
Speaker
Wow, God gave it to me. It's like, well, a lot of times it's because God already had that in mind and it just took us a while before we decided, hey, This looks like something I want.
00:13:58
Speaker
Choose to always follow God. Trust him and he will help you. He will make the right things you do shine like sunshine. It's because we are the light of the world and the salt of the earth.
00:14:11
Speaker
Because we have God's light, Jesus's light shining through us.
00:14:17
Speaker
Be with God and be still. Remember, be still and know that I am God.
00:14:25
Speaker
Be quiet and wait for him.
00:14:30
Speaker
His timing is perfect. I heard something the other day when I was listening to a podcast. And it said, you notice how Jesus just never hurried to do anything?
00:14:41
Speaker
Lazarus is dying. Okay, that's that's fine. I'll get there when I get there.
00:14:48
Speaker
God's not worried about timing. We rush and rush and rush and, oh, we've got to hurry. We've got to be on time. We're going to be late for this. We're going to be late for that. And God is never late for anything. So let's wait for him because his timing is always perfect.
00:15:03
Speaker
It's the enemy who wants us to rush and rush and rush and and not be still. But Jesus, he was always still. He was always moving and doing stuff, but he never got overly upset.
00:15:14
Speaker
Jesus, don't you care that we're in this boat and it's sinking and we're all going to die? And he's like, you guys just don't have any faith. he wasn't He was never upset about anything. Don't you care that we're going to sink?
00:15:27
Speaker
And he's just like, ah no, because ah we're not.
00:15:31
Speaker
He was never in a hurry. God, Jesus gave us the example of the perfect God. if Nobody has seen God, but we have seen Jesus. We have not personally, but people saw Jesus and they wrote about him in our new Testament.
00:15:46
Speaker
So we know what God looks like because we have seen the sun.
00:15:53
Speaker
So that is what God is like. God's not hurrying and rushing about from one end of the earth to the other.
00:16:00
Speaker
Keep away from anger and don't worry. It only leads to sin. When we are angry, there's another verse that says, in your anger, do not sin.
00:16:12
Speaker
And we haven't read that yet, but that's in the Bible. And when we are angry, we are tempted to do things that we would ordinarily maybe not do. So keep away from anger and don't worry because when we are worried about things, we have a tendency to hurry and say, oh, I better hurry up and do this.
00:16:30
Speaker
I'm worried. I'm worried. and I've got to do this. But as we've seen and throughout our stories this this year already, even in the short amount of time we've been reading, we're only almost three months into this year, is that already what we are seeing is that we don't need to worry.
00:16:46
Speaker
doesn't matter what we're going through. Jesus says, who by worrying can add a day of life? to their life? Who can add a day to their life by worrying?
00:16:57
Speaker
It's not going to make you live longer. And in fact, we know scientifically that worrying actually is very bad for our health.
00:17:05
Speaker
So what do you know? Jesus was right. Oh no. What are we going to do? but Listen and not worry. It only leads to sin. It leads us to do things which are the opposite of waiting on God.
00:17:23
Speaker
And someday all the sinful people will be gone. We will have a new heaven and a new earth. And we won't even die because Jesus took care of that too. We will be transitioning into our next existence, but we don't die. Jesus has told us, I did that for you too.
00:17:39
Speaker
no He that believes in me will not perish, but will have eternal life because God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever believes shall not perish.
00:17:53
Speaker
shall not die, but have eternal life. So what do we need to worry about? Jesus is taking care of everything.
00:18:05
Speaker
Here is our last psalm for the day. It is Psalm 40, and this is also just verses 1 through 10. And

Comfort and Relationship in Psalm 40

00:18:14
Speaker
this is also by David. David wrote a lot of psalms.
00:18:17
Speaker
A lot of psalms.
00:18:20
Speaker
I was still... And I waited for God. He heard my cry. My trouble was like a deep pit. He lifted me out. He lifted me out of the mud. He put my feet on a rock.
00:18:37
Speaker
It was a strong place for me to stand. God gave me a new song to praise Him. Lots of people will see this. Then they will trust in God.
00:18:49
Speaker
God will bring good things to people who trust in him. Lord, my God, you have done many wonderful things. No one can even count the things you planned for us.
00:19:03
Speaker
You didn't want me to bring you a gift. Instead, you wanted me.
00:19:12
Speaker
So I said, here I
00:19:15
Speaker
these There are words about me in your book.
00:19:21
Speaker
I'm happy to do what you want me to do, God. Your way is in my heart. I talk about how you keep your promises. I talk about how you save me.
00:19:33
Speaker
i don't hide your love and your truth.
00:19:39
Speaker
Each Psalm is more wonderful than last.
00:19:45
Speaker
I was still and I waited for God. And he heard my cry.
00:19:54
Speaker
lifted me out and he put my feet on a rock.
00:20:02
Speaker
You didn't want me to bring you a gift. Instead, you wanted me. God wants you. You are the gift that he wants you to bring. Just the way you are.
00:20:14
Speaker
Isn't that wonderful? God so loved us that he gave us his only son so that we could have eternal life with him because he wanted you and he loves you.
00:20:29
Speaker
Even if you were the only person, he did it just for you.
00:20:36
Speaker
And don't we talk about God's promises and how wonderful he is all the time?
00:20:42
Speaker
Ah, this is a beautiful psalm. I hope that you have found daily application where you can personalize every one of these Psalms for yourself. You hear me talk about them in my application.
00:20:54
Speaker
That's just as an example. I want you to see how we can apply these every day in our lives and how they can be comforting and reassuring and joyful.
00:21:06
Speaker
Even though this section of Psalms is entitled Songs About Good and Bad, they are so applicable and they are so full of joy. i am so

Application and Hope in Psalms

00:21:16
Speaker
filled with God's joy just reading them today and I hope that you are too.
00:21:21
Speaker
God has definitely lit my light today. And if you feel like God has lit your light, then after you're done listening or watching, please click that light button so that other people can see it and be curious. What is it everybody's looking at that's so awesome?
00:21:35
Speaker
And it's not me, it's God's word. Because by doing that, you are helping to spread the word about reading God's word. I hope everybody has a wonderful day and thinks about these Psalms and just really loves them and and that they just really light you up every time you hear hear it again.
00:21:55
Speaker
You have a great rest of your day and I will be here for you again tomorrow.
