Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Palace podcast, brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm Joe Lodge. I'll be your host today. in In thirty two thirty three season, when Roy wasn't even yet a glimmer in the eye of Bill Hodgson, Palace did a league double over Brighton, a feat they'd have to wait 92 years to replicate.
00:00:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Back then, there was little to no antipathy between the two clubs, ah Rivalry started to brew between the two sides in the 1970s and 50 years of bad blood later, the Eagles have finally done a league double over the Seagulls. Again,

Match Analysis: Palace vs. Brighton

00:00:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
with me to talk about it today is Wale Bakari. How are you doing, Wale?
00:00:58
Wale Bakare
I'm great, Joe. Great to be on the board today. ah was, i think, one of the, I don't know whether, one of the commentaries I was listening to was talking about how he was, I think, maybe 37 miles between, ah you know, Selost and Brighton.
00:01:15
Wale Bakare
And they were wondering whether, you know, that was enough to call it a derby because they were saying, and like, it was the same miles between maybe Manchester and Stoke or something. think
00:01:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
he Someone's not been to the Stockport-type derby there. Very fiesty.
00:01:30
Wale Bakare
i mean Yeah.
00:01:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think that's a fair point, isn't it?
00:01:34
Wale Bakare
Yeah.
00:01:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But hey, it's probably similar distance between Liverpool and Manchester as well.
00:01:41
Wale Bakare
Yeah.
00:01:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
you know um i think um i'm I'm having it. I'm having it. There's lots of real real hatred, so I'm having it. I'm having it as a big win for Palace as well.
00:01:49
Wale Bakare
but
00:01:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So to recap exactly what happened, Palace beat Brighton 2-1 on Saturday. Recording a rare home victory in the process. Mateta opened the scoring in the second minute before Danny Welbeck drew Brighton level midway through the first half.
00:02:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Munoz then put Palace back ahead on minute 55, restoring a lead they were able to cling on despite two late red cards, meaning they finished the game with nine men.
00:02:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Not to be outdone by their rivals, Brighton got a red card their own in the sixth minute of what was ultimately 14 minutes of added time. um while taught me through the game how did Palace get the better of Brighton kind of tactical masterclass bit luck bit both
00:02:41
Wale Bakare
Yeah, a bit of both to be honest because know Brighton had the most of the ball although most teams when they play Palace except you're really poor you would have most of the ball.
00:02:56
Wale Bakare
Palace are you know quite accustomed to letting you have the ball and you know eating you on the break and just being efficient and taking their chances when they come. And that was exactly what we saw. Brighton had chances of their own.
00:03:11
Wale Bakare
Anderson did make some good saves. ah There was a good double save at some point in the game. In the first half, there were maybe one or two other chances for Brighton. um ah It wasn't one of those games where you go, oh, Palace were, you know, bye,
00:03:28
Wale Bakare
margins or by miles the better side. um Brighton had, you know, they they they had chances of their own. if If that game had ended 2-2, for example, i not sure many of us would go, oh, Palace were unlucky or they should have won the game.
00:03:43
Wale Bakare
So it it was one of those games where You just get over the line, you get the result. And Palace did exactly that. um They were not entirely you know better than Brighton in the scheme of things. Brighton had more shots, had more possession, had greater chances, ah you know so to speak. but as a It's ah it' a scoreline at the end, at the at the final, we do the matters in any football game. And, you know, on the day Palace got two goals, Brighton got one.
00:04:16
Wale Bakare
Palace automatically, you know, naturally got three points. But as I said, over the course of the season, you will have games where you will dominate. and you will struggle to create chances and you know you struggle to break down teams and you wouldn't get goals and it ends up in a draw or you lose by the odd goal.
00:04:36
Wale Bakare
There will be games where you won't play too well and you will get the three points. or There will be games where you wouldn't necessarily be the better side, but you will nick the victory. And and that that was the game on Saturday. But it was great three points at home for Palace, especially because it was at Telos.
00:04:53
Wale Bakare
That's not something that's happened a lot for Palace this season.

Palace's Strategic Play

00:04:56
Wale Bakare
But against Brighton, with the bragging rights and all of that, it it was a great result for Palace.
00:05:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it is a great result and it's not easy to do. mean, Palace or only there were only the third team to beat Brighton last week, so it's not not an easy achievement to get over line there.
00:05:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think you're right. The game probably could have gone either way. Neither team created a host of great chances. I think it was something like Palace had 0.6 xG and Brighton had about flat one, so...
00:05:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
thatward as That as far as that crew metric, can indicate that if anything, they had the better of chances. But both teams yeah didn't let too many opportunities fall their opponent's way.
00:05:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Palace, I think both goals were defined by ah moving the ball really quickly through the thirds, which is what... has come to characterise Palace's attack recently and it was efficient again, really good, moved ball really well when they had those opportunities and both finishes from Mateta and Munoz were great.
00:06:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mateta's particularly pleasing to see, going away from goal on his week for that kind of confidence being, yeah, coursing for him despite the long layoff and quite literal trauma that he suffered to his head um is really, yeah, really, really great to see.
00:06:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
To what extent do you think, then drilling down further while they Brighton played into Palace's hands? do you think there were things they got wrong or could done better in the game?
00:06:41
Wale Bakare
Yeah, well, but that's usually the story of any game anyway. I'm sure the manager looks at it and thinks that there's things that could have been done better. um Brighton had the ball.
00:06:52
Wale Bakare
They, ah for some reason, at some point, Palace did look comfortable letting Brighton have the ball.
00:06:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:07:01
Wale Bakare
It was almost like there was that... you know the there wasn't that there was There wasn't a lot of fear in in the Palace defence as to what Brighton were going to come up with.
00:07:12
Wale Bakare
um the Brighton showed they could work chances, move the ball to the side. There was the cross from Jakubo Minte that led to the goal by Danny Welbeck.
00:07:27
Wale Bakare
I cannot say that he created ah lot afterwards. Mitoma wasn't creating much as well. ah We know that you know the wingers for Brighton are you know very critical to their game plan. So it it was a situation where some of the players just didn't turn up.
00:07:46
Wale Bakare
And Palace, when they got the ball and when they broke, were quite smart in the way that they walked it. There were a couple of times when, I think about twice, when Matt Gagey went on this run and drew like four Brighton players to himself.
00:08:03
Wale Bakare
And I know the first goal had a sequence like that. So for some reason, some the players just didn't turn up. the and you know Listening to Fabian Izzella after was talking about how they were, I can't remember the words he used, maybe it was about not being mature enough.
00:08:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think it was, yeah, it was even chill.
00:08:22
Wale Bakare
Yeah, so it was...
00:08:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was what he was trying to look
00:08:24
Wale Bakare
And you could say that for the Brighton side. We've seen that in a lot of games this season. So even when they lost seven to Nottingham Forest, they were in the game a lot of times where...
00:08:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
like.
00:08:37
Wale Bakare
It just kept drifting away from them and they ended up losing seven.
00:08:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so...
00:08:41
Wale Bakare
um I think that Brighton have lost the influence of you know experienced players in their squad. They had Pascal Cross before. they Dunk hasn't been the same player, has been injured a couple of times this season.
00:08:59
Wale Bakare
They've had new players you know led by a 32, 33-year-old manager. so that this that You could understand when he talks about maturity, but I don't know whether there's big characters in important positions you know for Brighton.
00:09:19
Wale Bakare
Of course, they're fantastic players, fantastic talents. the The defender, Van Aker, who got a red card, is a player I love watching. They've got...
00:09:28
Global Sports Podcast Network
Believer is pretty good. Hmm.
00:09:30
Wale Bakare
He's brilliant. They've got Mitoma, Yakubo Minte. ah Welbeck you know still getting goals but I just wonder whether they've got that character in them ah like they used to do particularly under the Graham Porter um I don't think they still do so yeah you it just felt like once Palace made sure that they stayed in the game they had a chance and All Palace did was you know try not to give a lot of chances away, even though, yes, they considered

Brighton's Struggles and League Position

00:10:04
Wale Bakare
some chances. But again, you know the the the way efficient, fantastic finish by Mateta, that goal was was just great.
00:10:12
Wale Bakare
you know Great finish by Munoz as well. And once you get the goals and you can stop your opponent from scoring, that's the idea of football.
00:10:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah I think he was in some ways a bit harsh with his comments on on Brighton's maturity. In some ways I see it, but I think maybe there's a little bit of deflection from other problems for Herzl at I think a big difference between Brighton this game and the reverse fixture in the Amex is they clearly did something. I think they probably just set their line a little bit deeper.
00:10:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
whatever they did... so Palace found it much harder to create space in behind them. Both their goals kind of come from acute angles where they've been forced wide by broadly decently positioned defenders from Brighton. Whereas, again, in the in the other fixture, maybe they were more confident of Palace's league position at the time or something like that. But they really left gaps in behind and just got ripped apart by Sars. think they got their tactics ah a lot better in that regard.
00:11:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
There were a couple of points. As you say, they did all get sucked in um a couple of times at moments where all their players would seem to go for the same ball. I don don't know if that's like, again, a question of maturity or a risk of just not being clear enough in your...
00:11:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
instructions if you want to press aggressively as a team. But I mean, I think it feels like about half the Brighton squad is converging on Eze as he runs from out to in.
00:11:53
Wale Bakare
Mm-hmm.
00:11:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
um And then despite the fact that they're all surrounding him, he can quite easily find a ball through to Munoz, who's completely unmarked from the right and gets that in that regard, I can see his point about made maturity in decision making.
00:12:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I mean, their biggest concern will probably be that they kind of created as little as they did when Palace were down to nine men. But I maturity. I think that's, don't know, creativity or something.
00:12:24
Wale Bakare
twenty
00:12:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Again, I don't think that's question of them. Yeah.
00:12:29
Wale Bakare
I just wonder whether, cut ah you know, I just want to ask you, what would when you look at Brighton's season at the moment, who what's the worst that can happen?
00:12:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think
00:12:41
Wale Bakare
Could it be a situation of just trying to go for it? They don't want to, you know, start picking up draws now.
00:12:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah,
00:12:47
Wale Bakare
They want to get three points. They're ninth. They, you know, if they... get wins and results go their way. They can't find themselves, you know, close to the, well, we don't know, maybe ninth might even be a European place at the moment, but they can find themselves, you know, up the table.
00:13:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah, yeah.
00:13:03
Wale Bakare
So in I just wonder whether that was something playing at the back of the head of the player saying, we just want to go for it and take risks.
00:13:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think that's true.
00:13:11
Wale Bakare
Hmm.
00:13:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think they also their two bruising defeats earlier in the week fresh in their minds.
00:13:18
Wale Bakare
Hmm.
00:13:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so probably a little bit kind of physically um and mentally battered. So i don't think they were too bad, really. um As you said, the start game could have gone either way.
00:13:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
And don't think they made like a load of really terrible mistakes. Just, um you know, kind of didn't have the rubble of the grid in the day while it was clinical. ah yeah But ah speaking of mature and sensible decisions, we will now have a word from Bionic, our sponsor, who you should definitely take advantage of.
00:14:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
sure why i've had that twice, but it's an important message.
00:14:38
Wale Bakare
That tends to happen. but
00:14:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's an important message.
00:14:41
Wale Bakare
but
00:14:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Good to drill down and
00:14:42
Wale Bakare
correct
00:14:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So we're going to examine who the star performers were for the Eagles in the day. So who do you think, Wally? Who really stood out for you?
00:14:54
Wale Bakare
Well, AZ got two assists. um the He looks like he's getting back to farm. and Great timing is towards the end of the season. It's that time where Towards the end of the season is when a lot of players would usually you know would usually begin to see their form peter down goals dry up.
00:15:16
Wale Bakare
Maybe we're seeing it with Mo Salah. We've seen it with Elinor and he's injured now though. But you know for Eze, it looks like he's picking up form towards the end of the season. Hopefully that's the situation. had a fantastic game, got two great assists, you know drew players to himself, created spaces for the other guys on the team.
00:15:36
Wale Bakare
Mateta Munoz got the goals. Mateta's goal was fantastic. Confident finish, as you said, Onis. you know ah when you When you see a finish like that, it's tough for me to say it's weaker foot.
00:15:50
Wale Bakare
But then, ah you know, finish them practically. And, ah you know, all the bits of his play was great as well.
00:15:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:16:00
Wale Bakare
It's interesting he was then subbed and Edin Katia came in and got a red card. But yeah, Munoz was great. But Dean Anderson also had a good game, made some great saves, made that double save and a critical point in the game.
00:16:16
Wale Bakare
um Delayed Brighton's first goal at least for a couple of minutes. But it it did, you know, make saves, was always switched on in the game. And although that's that's been the story this season, to be honest. So but those were the stars for me. it was Eze, Mateta, Munoz, and of course, Dean Anderson had great games for me.
00:16:38
Wale Bakare
have to say, you know, quick mention has to go to Baliba, who I thought was the best player on the pitch. To be honest, he had a great game. And I just wonder, you know, a lot of teams go to Brighton and, you know,
00:16:52
Wale Bakare
pick their players off and spend a lot of money. I just wonder whether it's that one that they will be making a lot of money from this summer.
00:17:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, ah to do something I've said down um online a few times about ah the reverse principle of the kind of, if my name was Aladice, if his name was Charles Ball, he'd be worth 150 million. colors per

Key Player Performances

00:17:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
there Very, very good.
00:17:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I think you're right, all all the players you highlight there. Eze was a standout again. I mean, he's been just on fire since last, since national break. And he was so sharp today. i think...
00:17:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
probably the standout element of his performance and his performances recently has been increased sort of speed of his decision making. He's releasing the ball at better times. It doesn't mean quickly, always. um Again, the...
00:17:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
the second goal that's created by him taking enough time about it that he draws loads of defenders in and then pass it into the space he's created. But I think everything has an added sense of intent and purpose compared to before international break. He's not sort of making up as he goes along on the ball. He's really yeah going for something and and executing it. It's just been awesome.
00:18:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Really good. Long may it continue. Henderson, that double save, was inspired in front of Tuchel, who's ah making Salah's Park like a second home. So...
00:18:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
that you know maybe maybe that will put him in contention for being number one. Again, we were expecting to maybe see him get a chance in the last international break. He didn't. But if he keeps playing like that, lot he's kind of have to um yeah there's going to be clamour for him eventually and Tuchel's going have to give him a chance.
00:18:44
Wale Bakare
you
00:18:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
The other guy I wanted to give a bit credit to um was, it's quite an understated performance, but I thought Dauchi Kamada was very good and answered lot of questions that we've had about, sometimes we've not been comfortable with him being used in sort combative end-to-end Premier League games in that central midfield role, worry about whether he's robust enough in that position, particularly if he's going to be partner partnering Wharton, who's that's not really his strong suit, he's more of a creative player.
00:19:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
But he came in as Wharton's partner in this game, the one tasked with and I'm probably doing more for the breaking up of the play and keeping the ball ticking. I thought it was excellent.
00:19:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
I won the ball five, six times on pass re clean me and and made a couple of telling contributions. I think it's his... sharp ball into Eze that precedes that goal scored by Munoz.
00:19:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's not like anything remarkable, but it's a very quick, sharp, accurate, well-chosen pass to get the ball again through the third.
00:19:57
Wale Bakare
he also got he also you know led to the red card as well
00:19:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
And he got Van Heggenhoff. yeah
00:20:01
Wale Bakare
sorry
00:20:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's brilliant. that it shows you know He's running, he's pressing right at the end of the game, 96 minutes, and nixed the ball in front of Van Hecker, he would be in on goal. Van Hecker kind of has to foul him and get a second yellow card.
00:20:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
And in doing so, really yeah brings brings halves Brighton's numerical advantage and takes the pressure off Palace towards the end. So I think he had a really ah really great game um in an understated kind of way. and um maybe the shot on the arm that his Palace career needs because and I don't really see him making it into that front three anytime soon.
00:20:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So yeah, very pleasing to see. Very pleasing to see for His... um his playing in centre mid was perhaps brought about in part by fact that Lerma had to drop back into back three again for this game to cover for the injured Chris Richards how do you think he did as a ah mate shift in the back
00:21:04
Wale Bakare
yeah
00:21:11
Wale Bakare
but Well, we've seen him do the job before. Although maybe on the left side instead of the right side. But I thought it was a short... Lemmo is an experienced professional. Been in the Premier League a couple of years now.
00:21:25
Wale Bakare
Played for Bournemouth and then you know Palace. I think he understands his role whenever he's on the pitch. And he just goes about his business. Yes, he's got one or two moments of losing the ball and aiming the midfield.
00:21:40
Wale Bakare
But I think when he plays at the back, he just keeps the job simple, whacks it long when he has to, passes to the nearest man when he has to, doesn't dally on the ball.
00:21:52
Wale Bakare
It's one of those who just gets the job done ah when he's playing that makeshift centre-back role. And that but that was exactly what he did on on Saturday.
00:22:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, think you're right. And he substitutes in that. Again, he can kind of make up for some of the physicality and combativeness that losing richards takes away from the front line with the more assured well actually we're going to discuss how assured they are in the next part the the break but they're typically more assured aqua and gay um nice balance i think yeah another good performance from old jeff lerma but we'll have another break now and then return to speak about uh a couple of uh naughty boys in the palace too
00:22:26
Wale Bakare
Bye.

Upcoming Challenges for Palace

00:23:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
So both ah Uncle Mark Gehe and nephew Eddie Nketiah will miss Palace's next match after being sent off with a pair of yellow cards apiece.
00:23:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Will Palace be appealing over these while they were? were They deserve sending offs for you.
00:23:24
Wale Bakare
I think they were. um Ketia's second yellow, you could say maybe unfortunately, he did have his eyes on the ball, but he's just stretched his leg and caught the player. and Yeah, you you would get a yellow card any time, any day for that.
00:23:43
Wale Bakare
you know i'm I'm sure, to be honest, if it wasn't on the yellow card, there would be questions about the VAR check maybe with that iPhone.
00:23:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, exactly.
00:23:54
Wale Bakare
And for for some reason, Gay's challenge also was a not what's quite similar. was so I just wonder because I was thinking to myself, yeah, I was thinking to myself,
00:24:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
I hope they both got the first yellows, so... yeah
00:24:07
Wale Bakare
If that had been the first yellow card, then maybe would have ended as a yellow card for Nketiah. Even for Gea, I don't know whether you might still not have seen red, especially time of the game ah you know with just the one tackle or just the one foul.
00:24:24
Wale Bakare
um I think it was just that moment where players were tired. You make those lazy lunges. um But yeah, they will be missing.
00:24:36
Wale Bakare
you know particularly Gay is going to be missing, you know, a game for Palace. Also remember, there's a worry of, you know, concussion for Lacroix.
00:24:47
Wale Bakare
It might also be missing Richard Zinjot. I wonder what the defensive line-up will be, you know, in the next game. Joe Ward, yeah, came on in the game, but
00:24:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah but last yeah That's just exactly what I'm coming on to now. while it is Do you think Palace getting their best defender sent off stands them in good stead to go to Pep Guardiola's Manchester City at the Etihad next week?
00:25:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's not
00:25:12
Wale Bakare
No, it doesn't. but It doesn't, to be honest. a Although you could argue that with City, whether you win or lose the game is not necessarily about what you do a lot of times.
00:25:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
a bad game to be suspended for.
00:25:23
Wale Bakare
It's about what they do. If they play well, you know you're are in trouble. If they don't, if they if they f play like they did against you United yesterday, then I don't care whether it's Glasner himself in defence, they might be losing and you know to Palace baller.
00:25:39
Wale Bakare
um Yeah, it's it's not great you know for Palace missing Gay through the Red Cat and quite possibly because of concussion. I think it's...
00:25:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I'm both still Richards.
00:25:51
Wale Bakare
Yeah, and then Richard's injured. I think it's Liverpool's Alisson who had a concussion issue with Brazil and he's missed two games since then because there's protocols you know for concussion.
00:26:02
Wale Bakare
you just
00:26:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:26:03
Wale Bakare
The player might want to play, but you just have to follow the protocols and We don't know how long Lacroix will be missing for. so but For the City game, although I don' i don't think Palace would have looked at a trip to Etihad and thought, oh, that that's three points for us.
00:26:21
Wale Bakare
So it's not one you really worry about. It's the games afterwards, Newcastle, Bournemouth. So it's the ones afterwards. whether you Mind you, it totally depends on what, I just wonder what Glasner's saying to the boys at this part of the season.
00:26:37
Wale Bakare
are yeah Are they just trying to finish strong? Are they seeing maybe, just maybe, there will be you know teams around you know the 8th position, 9th position dropping points and Maybe a Palace will just be there to peak whatever you know drops from the tree.

Season Goals and Listener Engagement

00:26:55
Wale Bakare
Because Palace have got 43 points. That's five points behind Fulham, who are eight.
