Introduction and League Resumption

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome back to the Daily Palace podcast brought to the Global Sports Podcast Network. For two more days, I'm still in the first quarter of my life.
00:00:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I'm going to squeeze in as much watching children's TV, soiling myself and not worrying about my pension as I can. With me today is Dan Tanner. How are you doing, Dan?
00:00:33
Dan Tanner
I'm doing all right, mate. there We've now got proper football back. I know we was doing we just had the ah FA Cup, but now back to the league and back to, well, a pretty nasty back end of the season. I was having a look at the fixtures.
00:00:46
Dan Tanner
Oh, boy, it's going

Crystal Palace's Performance Focus

00:00:48
Dan Tanner
to be fun. lot We could determine so many people's fate for the next couple of months. It's unbelievable.
00:00:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I mean, Palace have been, you say, the sort of second best team in the league on many metrics in 2025. But think that has been...
00:01:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
somewhat about detracting from the quality of performances facilitated by a decent run of games um and yeah it's going to get a bit more difficult as the season goes on but ah my all my eggs are in the FA Cup basket now i don't care about the league not bothered how all that goes um Today, we're going to talk about some Red Bull rumours, defensive decisions and Southampton scorelines.
00:01:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah as you say, the tough run of fixtures does not start tonight. um Palace will be taken on Southampton, which is not just the easiest fixture the league this season, but probably of the easiest in Prem history, you'd hope.
00:01:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
But ah by the time you're listening to this, they might have succumbed to a surprise defeat. um Like the German Football Federation though, fun fact, we're going to start in Leipzig where Rassenball Sports have recently sacked manager Marco Rosa.

Glasner's Potential Move to Leipzig

00:02:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah That matters to us from Palace perspective because they're said to have held talks with Glasner's people over the vacant position. Do you think that's a likely move, Dan? No.
00:02:19
Dan Tanner
Oh, I probably think it's a likely move. Glasner has sort of over the last so season them and a bit at Palace proven to be a sort of a good, sort solid, reliable manager. ah He's got experience in the German league.
00:02:33
Dan Tanner
So, yeah, they've got no problem there. We can speak the language being Austrian, so no real issue there. My only real concern at the moment is that this story's been going on for a kind of a while now.
00:02:46
Dan Tanner
like even sort of before the international break, and it just sort of doesn't seem to have any kind of end at the moment. Because don't see him leaving at the moment because it the last 10 games of the season.
00:02:57
Dan Tanner
He'll probably like to see it out.
00:02:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's it.
00:02:58
Dan Tanner
You don't really change a manager that close to the end of the season. And even if you do you don't expect a lot of changes. They don't really... so It's only usually a placeholder, so they'll put the assistant in for a while, whatever.
00:03:11
Dan Tanner
But yeah, that's my only real concern at the moment is... but yeah It's just been going on forever. And so there's a load of like talks of we've got to um basically do as much as we can to try and keep Glasner around, which I don't disagree with.
00:03:27
Dan Tanner
But kind of the problem is, what's he got to stick around for? Because there's a likelihood that there's at least three or four of our star players that going to be poached over the summer.
00:03:39
Dan Tanner
If we can keep two of them, I'll be shocked. So... um I don't think there's not exactly a lot to stay for, but if we can get into Europe through the FA Cup, it might be ah we might be able to keep some of these guys.
00:03:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:03:53
Dan Tanner
So it's very much of what happens at the back end of the season will probably determine what Glasner does. And then it comes to the next problem with who do we get? It's the same with all these other, like even the big clubs. so go they If they sack a manager, they're going to be going after the same people.
00:04:11
Dan Tanner
Who do we get into Yeah, who do we have that's going to be linked with us? Probably Gareth Southgate. cause I think he probably still hasn't got a... As far as I understand, he's probably still knocking about doing nothing at the minute.
00:04:26
Dan Tanner
ah but Living off um the ah FA money he got for that.
00:04:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
not
00:04:31
Dan Tanner
So, ah ah yeah, that that's So, yeah, that's my only real concern at the moment.
00:04:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
an unreasonable bet to check on now get decent odds at this point um
00:04:41
Dan Tanner
Like, it's... It's been going on for far too long. And yes, if it does happen, who do we then do? Because I think we had this conversation at the beginning of the season when there were rumors that Glasner had three games to save his job and we were kind of split balling and they're probably still the same people.
00:05:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
from Graham Potter. Do ah so so do you think if you were Glasney you would be tempted by this offer then?
00:05:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because I kind of and i have some optimism that even if he is the first choice for Red Bull here, which again, I think that's um not something we can say of any certainty now. And there are a few reasons could go into why I think he might not be,
00:05:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
but yeah Do you think if you if you're Glaston you actually would want to make the move? Because he didn't seem too swayed by um the offer for Bayern in the summer. Not that he had the opportunity to talk to them, but he didn't seem to throw his toys out at the pram or or push for that, which is...
00:05:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
by a mile, the biggest club in Germany and is far closer to Austria, to home for him. So, ah no, I'd have, what what do you reckon? i'd I'd have some optimism that he might prefer to stick around at Palace managing the Prim than take this job.
00:06:11
Dan Tanner
yeah I probably to a degree would kind of agree with you that he probably wants to stay in the Prem. He's settled in now, etc. But Leipzig is a slightly bigger club.
00:06:22
Dan Tanner
They are playing, sort of, they are pushing for Champions League a lot. So he'll have a lot more opportunity to sort play in the bigger games and things like that.
00:06:32
Dan Tanner
But he is going to be a true professional about this.
00:06:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:06:36
Dan Tanner
He's not going to throw his toys out the Prem. He's not going to throw a, no, he's going to carry on just as normal and this is going to go off in the background and it'll be a decision that we'll get to at some other point but he looks like a guy that he's sort of fairly loyal to the club he's at because I think sort wasn't it ah Frankfurt i think he actually had to get sacked at Frankfurt before Palace scott could offer for him so he's one of these guys that yeah he's going to stick around until he believes the job is done or he gets forced out one or the other so yeah I think
00:07:10
Dan Tanner
probably slightly more would probably will stick around because if it's not um leipzig um i think spurs probably will be looking at him as well because i don't think um yeah their gaffer isn't going to hang around much longer either um and you could even probably argue man united might be even looking at him too but they're not gonna they're not doing much better with their new gaffer either so he's probably going to be on a lot of people's uh lists for new gaffers
00:07:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:07:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, yeah, no, I think you're right. he Leipzig won't be the only club they're interested in, well, the way that Palace are finishing this season, particularly if he can carry it on and achieve something really material like top half finish, like an FA Cup win maybe.
00:07:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I'm optimistic this one on balance won't happen for not just the reasons that I'm not sure whether it's that much more appealing than the Palace job, but to him, but also
00:08:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah kind of question how much he's ah good fit for Leipzig, a red ball manager. He's got a lot of things going for him in that sense. He did literally... work at salzburg under roger smith he's worked with the sporting director at leipzig before at wolfsburg and apparently klopp who doesn't really know how much actual decision-making power he has and how much his position is ceremonial as head of global soccer or whatever he is but um he is said to be a big fan oliver basner so in in all those ways you can see it happening but
00:08:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Their football has kind of always been defined by really kind of intense, high-pressing, attacking principles. um I mean, Glaser's committed to pressing, but he's not really super attacking manager.
00:09:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's far more pragmatic, even his really good Frankfurt side conceded few and scored fairly few. So I don't think he's going to i't I don't know, I have some doubts about whether he's really the man for Red Bull, for Leipzig, um regardless of whether even he wanted to go or not.
00:09:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we'll see.

Defense Dilemma: Chris Richards' Injury

00:09:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll see how it pans out. We're going have a quick break there for a word from our sponsors. And then we're going to talk about some defensive dilemmas facing the man we've just discussed.
00:10:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Chris Richards was a major part of Palace's FA Cup win over Fulham. ah But in that, he picked up some minor calf treble, which rules him out for at least this game against Southampton.
00:10:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
With Palace now having no other conventional centre-backs available, Glasner has outlined three potential solutions, probably about the three that we would expect, to plug that gap.
00:10:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
One is replacing Richards with Klein, who's done that role for him a few times. Second is bringing in Lerma, dropping him to the back three.
00:11:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah The third is, again, just bringing Chilwell or Mitchell into the back three. Both of whom he's trialled in that position in training.
00:11:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Talk me through these down. Which is your favorite? What are the ups and downs of each each option?
00:11:31
Dan Tanner
Well, I think the favourite, I don't the easiest one, because i think we've brought this up a couple of times before, was being Mitchell going into that sort of left-hand side of the back three.
00:11:42
Dan Tanner
just i' because He's match fit now. I'm watching him against Fulham on the weekend. He was playing that sort of role, dropping in there when Fulham got on the move.
00:11:54
Dan Tanner
And he was doing a fairly decent job. but He's ah good at the clicks of getting the ball, clearing it out. He didn't wasn't rushed, wasn't um phased by any of it. So I think putting him in the centre and then moving and getting Chilwell a bit of a so run or so, a game or two on the left left wing back position is probably the logical choice and probably the simplest one.
00:12:22
Dan Tanner
ah Lerma I'm a little bit less sort of inclined to do as a Well, if he has to move to the centre-back position, because at the moment, Will Hughes is still out for at least another game through suspension. So Lerma's playing the central midfield role with Wharton. So he'd have to move back and then that leaves up another space open in the central midfield, which is probably going to Kamada.
00:12:53
Dan Tanner
um Probably the first choice there, which... He's doing all right, but he still hasn't quite settled in the squad or quite fit on where he's supposed to be.
00:13:06
Dan Tanner
But playing up against Southampton is probably not a bad chance there. Give him a game. Let him so find his way into sort of the team a little bit. It's not a bad start.
00:13:17
Dan Tanner
Shout for that. And Lerma being sort of a... Because I think Richards was a converted so central midfielder as well, kind of defiant. defensive midfielder kind of moved back into that centre-back position. So we'd expect Lerma to kind of very much play the same way.
00:13:36
Dan Tanner
so just be a nice sort clean-up ah person, sort just get the get the ball, get rid of it out to Munez. I think he's more than willing and able to do that. And then Klein, well, yeah, I'm not so sold on Klein doing that. Maybe for 10, 15 minutes,
00:13:56
Dan Tanner
ah back end of the game which seems to be what uh glasner is using him for it's kind of uh so just to put him in just to sort solidify the defense a bit be a rotation of for munez so yeah i don't think putting him as a center back for a full 90 is going to work quite so well but on the other hand he does have that kind of experience in the team being sort of one of the older members of the squad so It is a toss-up, but if I was going to probably be doing it, I think I'm going for Tyreek Mitchell, I think, for the moment.
00:14:33
Dan Tanner
If it's for one game, Tyreek Mitchell as the centre-back and give Chilwell a game, really. That would be my sort of recommendation. But I'm not the one to put get that gets paid the big bucks to do this, so we'll have to see what happens. happens But, yeah, we'll go from there.
00:14:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I agree. I think you made some good points there, Dan. I quite like, for the reasons you outlined there, that he's probably the most like-for-like and he's disruptive to the chemistry of the back three. I quite like the idea of dropping Lerma in. I think he gives you more of what Richards gives you than...
00:15:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
any of the other options. is He's not actually big, but he's dominant in the air. He wins a lot of headers. He wins more than half his duels and 1.7 a game already from centre mid and how i increase at the back. He's front-footed. He's aggressive.
00:15:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, For the balance of things, i think he'd he'd work well. But as you say, it does create pressure in another position where Palace are ah fairly stretched instead mid.
00:15:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
So probably kind of want him there. And and and that's the dilemma in itself. Then Mitchell, ah I like. I think he can play that left centre-back role really well.
00:16:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
It involves a lot of one-on-one defending, which really is the thing above all that he's good at. um And yeah, competent pass can help Palace dominate the ball from the back, as um usually their kind of most patient, best passing moves are built out through the centre-backs. So think he he'd do well there. um The only downside is I feel like Chilwell was signed.
00:16:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
The reason we were really pleased come in above anything else was that could just give Mitchell a rest and let him um yeah have a few days off. And funny, a way to squeeze them both into the team then feels a bit like undermines some of the benefit.
00:16:38
Dan Tanner
Yeah, he hasn't been that lucky. it's ah
00:16:44
Dan Tanner
Can I have a kind of a break, Catherine?
00:16:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Yeah.
00:16:47
Dan Tanner
No. Everybody else keeps getting injured. You're not allowed to.
00:16:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, you're going up front. ah But aside I think, yeah, ups and downs so that one too. And then Klein, I quite like him anyways. think he played that role really pretty well at the back end of last season.
00:17:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
And again, because he doesn't really play much at the moment, it means you can pop him in without creating a hole or pressure elsewhere really in the team.
00:17:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
But the question is, sort of flip side of that is, does he not play much? Because, as you say, he doesn't have it in his legs anymore do 90 minutes at this level that intends to...
00:17:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know. If it's just that he's been a bit out favour, I think it's a perfectly good solution to bring Kline in. I think he does the role well. But if it is that he's just not quite up to it at the moment, then that's a concern in itself.
00:17:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, but the upshot of all that is leave up to Glasner. I mean, there are other players in the team who still haven't really found settled role in this 19-11.
00:18:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nketiah, Kamada. Could I ever then play right centre-back
00:18:09
Dan Tanner
I'd be very shocked if Kamada can play right centre-back.
00:18:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
I've been less, more shocked than Ketsuya can.
00:18:13
Dan Tanner
ah
00:18:16
Dan Tanner
Yeah, that too. But I guess Ketia will give it a go.
00:18:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah
00:18:20
Dan Tanner
That's the problem. I think Kamada will as well. Just sort of, yeah, don't worry, Gaffer, I'll give it a go. And then just watch him get completely of like out-positioned everywhere. and
00:18:33
Dan Tanner
But it is Southampton, so he might as well give it Yeah.
00:18:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
In Ketsuya, I think,
00:18:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Both of them are dangerous. um Yeah, making late runs. Make a very deep run to the back post. You never know. might have unlocked a new ideal score.
00:18:47
Dan Tanner
ah
00:18:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But I mean, I think, yeah, is there isn't one clear um best option for me, but kind of all of them are fine.
00:19:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think any of them are disastrous, particularly
00:19:04
Dan Tanner
That's kind of the problem. They're all acceptable, but we're not sure which one is the best. They're all fine. Go for it. It's all right.
00:19:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
it's like serving the uh the fast food options at a service station that'll be fine it'll all be fine um yeah i I think for me, i'd prefer any of those options to a change of system or try do a back four or anything like that. think they're all kind of
00:19:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
can substitute enough of what Richard's bought that they shouldn't it shouldn't cause a team to compromise it's its basic successful shape and structure and way of playing that's got to this point. So they're all right. interesting to see which one he picks. um We can reflect later in the week on how well it works out.

Palace vs. Southampton Match Preview

00:20:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we'll have our second ad now and then cap off with some final thoughts on that Southampton game.
00:20:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Right, finally, we're just going to touch briefly, as I say, on Palace's trip to Southampton tonight. Chances are that the game has happened by the time you're listening to this and we've completely embarrassed us to have our score predictions. But, Dan, you spoke to the Daily Southampton boys earlier this week.
00:20:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Did you learn anything new or surprising about the team? And what are your predictions for this game? How do you think it's going to go?
00:21:04
Dan Tanner
But what learned about the team was apparently they don't play with a centre forward, which completely and utter utterly surprised me. but that's Yeah, just apparently, yeah, they they don't their formation doesn't play with a centre forward, so or arguably anyway.
00:21:20
Dan Tanner
So, yeah, I guess it's some really weird sort of decisions that the manager has made over the last sort of few months because i think they've changed...
00:21:31
Dan Tanner
halfway through the season and nothing has changed in the squad whatsoever they've it's almost like they've all checked out like they've just gone right it's the end of this we've already finished the season we're this far behind we just want to get and get it over and done with as much as everybody else does um and yeah but i think i'd probably do the same prediction as i did with those guys that are a fairly comfortable to me off palace won't start um
00:21:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:01
Dan Tanner
right out the blocks as always nice and slow and steady and probably get one or two goals on a somewhat counter-attack or sort of slow build-up play and yeah just a relatively safe three points for us before we head into a bit of a gauntlet at the end of the season because uh yeah the the next ones going to be fun so we need to get the last real sort of chance for well almost guaranteed three points at this point uh so i'm
00:22:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:22:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
and
00:22:29
Dan Tanner
I was trying not to be mean to him on Monday, but it was very, very difficult not to go. Guys, what's going on? Please, can you explain this to me? How have you gotten this?
00:22:40
Dan Tanner
Has it gone this badly?
00:22:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, i mean, i I can't see Palace not winning this. <unk> I'd go 3-0 or Southampton have scored in their last couple of games.
00:22:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
They carry something of a threat. ah If Richards was fit and the back three was settled, I would not back them score again, given that he's out.
00:23:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
maybe there'll be an opportunity for them to do so. i don't think they're getting more than one. And so one or none.
00:23:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
And i think Palace are in great form for in front of goal. And it doesn't really matter how they set up. So you'd think they're quite well...
00:23:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
place to play against Southampton. Southampton tend to play a fairly high line, leave lot space in behind, get just ripped apart on the counter-attack by almost everyone they play against, which suits Palace.
00:23:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
That suits the likes of Saar and the way they like directly go at teams. But also, if Southampton do decide to bet in, to be honest, they look just as vulnerable.
00:24:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think they really can't defend their own box either. They're just so bad at picking up runners and ah and understanding the shape of a game and and an attack that's forming.
00:24:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I don't see any way in which Palace don't get at least two goals in this game other other than completely profligate finishing. I think i have tons of chances. So, yeah, ah I'm saying 3-0, to be honest.
00:24:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I feel pretty confident for Palace. So, yeah, um I think on that ah note, which, again, i kind of am already feeling is going be proved horribly wrong, um we'll ah finish.
00:24:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
So...
00:24:41
Dan Tanner
Don't say that. with You can't jinx us had a couple of hours before it happens. Come on. Don't jinx us now. We're doing all right. If it goes horribly wrong, you can blame Joe. There you go.
00:24:53
Dan Tanner
We've established.
00:24:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. Well, I'm touching MDF right now. You can't see it on the screen, but that should be right there.
00:24:59
Dan Tanner
That works. That's fine. That's fine.
00:25:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
start Thank you for listening. If you've enjoyed, give us a five-star review. we'll say, really helps us get discovered.

Conclusion and Farewell

00:25:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
We'll be back again later in the week to dissect this game against Southampton and ah look forward to the big one, the Derby with Brighton coming up at the weekend.
00:25:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah But until then, keep yourselves well and it's goodbye from us.
00:25:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
you
