Today we will be reading 2 Kings Chapters 19:36-37, 21:1-15, 2 Chronicles chapter 33, Nahum Chapters 1and 2:1. Today we will read about King Manasseh of Judah, who was King Hezekiah's son. We will read about him doing evil in the sight of the Lord by worshipping many idols, including the stars, practicing witchcraft, divination, sorcery, consulting with ghosts and spiritists and causing the people of Judah to follow after him, leading them astray. We will read about God sending the king of Assyria to come into Judah and take King Manasseh away to Babylon because of the people's disobedience to God. We will see that when King Manasseh prayed to God that God forgave him and brought him back home to Judah. In the Book of Nahum we will read about God's judgment for Nineveh, since they had returned to their sinful ways since the time of Jonah, approximately 100 years. Lastly, we will read another prophecy about the coming of Jesus- that he would be bringing good news of peace. In our discussion for daily application we will about about the importance of not following the evil ways of the world- practicing horoscope reading, playing Ouija Board, practicing witchcraft, consulting with psychics for our future, or worshiping false gods, such as Buddha. We will talk about the importance of being good witnesses for God and pointing people to God and Jesus rather than being bad examples and leading people astray. We will be reassured that nothing can separate us from the love of God that is in Jesus, just as nothing separated Manasseh from God's love. God still loved him and forgave him. Nothing we have done or will do can separate us from God's love. In the same way that Manasseh turned back to God, so too can WE turn back to God, no matter what. God will always forgive us when we come back to Him. It is important for us to be witnesses of God's love and forgiveness that we experience and share this good news with other people, as Paul tells us in Romans chapter 10:15.  Lastly, we will talk about the connection and consistency of today's reading with yesterday's reading. This version of the Bible is written chronologically. We are seeing that God was sending almost the same message through more than one prophet so that the people would be sure and know that He would be sending the good message of shalom to his people!

Transition to Kings of Judah

00:01:20
Speaker
Well, we have finished the book of Isaiah, and now we are going to be picking back up with the kings of Judah.
00:01:27
Speaker
At our last reading about the king of Judah, we saw that Hezekiah, ah his reign came to an end. He lived to a good old age, and now his son Manasseh is going to be taking over the throne.
00:01:41
Speaker
Now, you would hope that his son would be as righteous as his father Hezekiah and and had a heart for God, but unfortunately, that was not the case.

Threat from Assyria

00:01:54
Speaker
So we are going to be hearing about some terrible things about King Manasseh, as well as hearing a little bit more about the king of Assyria. Now, you might remember from our last reading, maybe a week or so ago, the king of Assyria,
00:02:11
Speaker
was going to ah invade Judah. And so he was trying to use scare tactics to tell the the people of Judah not to believe King Hezekiah when he said that he was trusting in God to save them.
00:02:27
Speaker
And he tried to tell them that their God wasn't going to be able to do anything to save them since nobody else's God had ever been able to do anything to save them against the king of Assyria and his army.
00:02:40
Speaker
And of course we know that the difference is, is that God is real and that those other people from those other nations were worshiping false gods. So of course they couldn't save themselves.
00:02:54
Speaker
So today we are going to see what happens to the king of Assyria.

Introduction to Nahum

00:02:59
Speaker
And we're also going to read in the book of Nahum. This is a new book we will be starting. It's very short. It only has three chapters in it.
00:03:08
Speaker
But Nahum was a prophet. And so Nahum is going to be speaking about Nineveh. Nineveh is where Jonah went. when God gave him a message to go talk to Nineveh and tell the Ninevites that they needed to change their ways, that they were doing a lot of sinful things, we remember that they obeyed.
00:03:31
Speaker
They felt sorry. They actually had ah revival and repentance. and for a while, they were ah correcting their behavior. But Nahum takes place about 100 after Jonah.
00:03:47
Speaker
And so we see that the Ninevites have slid right back into their old behaviors to the point where God has now decided that there is nothing good left in them.
00:03:57
Speaker
And they're going to be destroyed much in the same way that Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed. So we're going to be reading in 2 Kings today, as well as 2 Chronicles.
00:04:10
Speaker
And in 2 Kings, we are going to be reading from the end of chapter 19, which is verses 37, as well as chapter 21, and 2 Chronicles chapter 33. as well as chapter twenty one and then from second chronicles chapter thirty three And i will always put the ah verses of what we are reading in the description below so that if you are hungry for more of God's word, you can head up your big Bible and read any more fine details that you feel may be missing that you're interested in knowing about.
00:04:43
Speaker
Since we know this is a big overview story, it doesn't cover all of the fine details, but it's still a great overview of what's going on.

Manasseh's Idolatry and Consequences

00:04:53
Speaker
So let's pick up today and our first section is entitled, A 12-Year-Old King.
00:05:01
Speaker
Hezekiah's son, Manasseh, became Judah's next king. He was 12 years old, but he became a bad king and he worshiped idols.
00:05:15
Speaker
He built altars to stars and worshiped them. He even put the altars in God's worship house. Manasseh asked witches to help him, and he did many wrong things.
00:05:30
Speaker
And God's people did what Manasseh did. So God got very angry with them. God spoke to his prophets about it. Manasseh has done terrible sins, said God.
00:05:44
Speaker
He leads the people to sin. So I'm going to bring big trouble to Judah. I will wipe them off the land and it will be like wiping dirt off a dish.
00:05:56
Speaker
I will leave my people, said God. Their enemies will take everything away from them. And it's because my people are doing wrong. They are making me angry.
00:06:11
Speaker
The king of Assyria was worshiping his idol one day and two of his sons came in. They killed him with a sword. Then they ran away and another son became the next king of Assyria.
00:06:26
Speaker
Now Manasseh was Judah's king and God talked to Manasseh and his people, but they didn't listen. So God let the army of Assyria come into the land and Assyria won the fight and took King Manasseh.

Manasseh's Repentance and Reforms

00:06:44
Speaker
They put a ring in his nose and then they took him to Babylon. King Manasseh was very upset, so he prayed to God.
00:06:56
Speaker
Now the king knew he was not the greatest, so when he prayed, God listened. God brought him back to Jerusalem. Then Manasseh knew that the Lord is God.
00:07:11
Speaker
and after that, Manasseh built back the outside wall of Jerusalem, and he built it up even higher than it had been before. He put army leaders in all the forts.
00:07:23
Speaker
He got rid of all the idols. He took the idol out of God's worship house. He threw all idols out of the city. And then he brought the altar back to God's worship house.
00:07:36
Speaker
He gave gifts to God on it. King Manasseh told all the people to serve God, and they did. But they chose to worship God in the wrong places.

Nahum's Prophecies of Nineveh

00:07:52
Speaker
Here's what God said about Nineveh, the main city of Assyria. This is Nahum chapter one.
00:08:00
Speaker
God told this to Nahum by putting pictures in Nahum's mind. God wants his people to follow his way. He is God and he pays back people for doing wrong.
00:08:14
Speaker
God doesn't get angry quickly, but he has great power. He won't let people get away with sin.
00:08:24
Speaker
God's power is in the rushing wind. His power is in the storm. Clouds are the dust from his feet. God dries up the sea.
00:08:35
Speaker
He dries up the rivers. The mountains shake and the hills melt. Who can stand up against God's anger? He lets his anger flow out like fire and rocks break in front of him.
00:08:52
Speaker
But God is good and he is like a safe place in times of trouble. He takes care of people who trust in him. But he will get rid of Nineveh and he will chase his enemies into the dark.
00:09:10
Speaker
They may make plans against God, but he will stop them. They will be mixed up in the weeds and they will be drunk with their wine. They'll be burned up like dry grass.
00:09:23
Speaker
Someone has come from Nineveh and he makes bad plans against God. He tells people to do bad things. And God has told what's going to happen to you, Nineveh.
00:09:36
Speaker
You won't have any people left. I will get rid of your idols.
00:09:44
Speaker
And Nahum chapter 2, verse 1 says, But look, someone is bringing good news to God's people. He comes from the mountains.
00:09:57
Speaker
He is bringing news of peace. So have your dinner parties for God, Judah. Keep your promises to God. Sinful nations won't come to fight God's people anymore.
00:10:14
Speaker
And that's the end of our reading today.
00:10:22
Speaker
So let's go back and talk about King Hezekiah. It's so sad that he was not a good king like his father, all we're talking about King Manasseh, sorry about that.
00:10:34
Speaker
It's too bad that he's not a good king like his father, Hezekiah. But did you see that he turned his ways around? And that's important and because it's not too late for anybody to turn their ways around.

God's Forgiveness of Manasseh

00:10:49
Speaker
God forgives. Did you see how God forgave Manasseh even after he had done terrible things? That is so important today for us to remember as part of our daily lesson.
00:11:03
Speaker
We're going to talk about the bad things that he did, but we're going to also see that after he prayed to God, God answered him.
00:11:14
Speaker
God was there the whole time just waiting for him to repent. God loves us and he is a safe place for anybody in time of trouble. But people need to be following his ways because he is God.
00:11:30
Speaker
But we are so fortunate that God is so forgiving and so gracious. And that is why he sent us his son, even, Jesus, so that he could pay the price for all of our sins, so that we would not have eternal separation from him.
00:11:47
Speaker
That is really good news. And that is the news that Nahum was speaking about at the end of his of our reading today, is that Jesus would be bringing...
00:11:59
Speaker
the message of peace, of shalom that we have been talking about.

Reflection and Application of Manasseh's Story

00:12:05
Speaker
I wanted to point out, though, as part of our daily application, is that first, I wanted to point out for us, for Jedi and Pearl and Forest and Diamond, is that did you see the bad things that King Manasseh was doing?
00:12:23
Speaker
It says that King Manasseh did evil in God's sight. It says in our version that he did many wrong things. But we're going to go to our big Bible today.
00:12:35
Speaker
And we're going to read in 2 Kings chapter 21. It
00:12:41
Speaker
it says in chapter 21, verse 2, Manasseh did what was evil in the Lord's eyes. He was following the the terrible things that the nations did.
00:12:55
Speaker
had done who were living in the land before the land was given to the jewish people He rebuilt the shrines, which are places,
00:13:09
Speaker
that his father hezekiah had destroyed he built altars for bail which we know is a fake god He made an Asherah pole, as King Ahab of Israel had done, and he bowed down to all the stars and worshiped them.
00:13:28
Speaker
He even built altars in God's worship house.
00:13:34
Speaker
And he made his son pass through the fire. Do you remember that we read about another king who was doing terrible things, that he was the worst one of all?
00:13:46
Speaker
He was putting his children to to burns and sacrifice.
00:13:53
Speaker
It says that he practiced soothsaying and divination, which is witchcraft, and trying to see the future, like tarot cards and psychics.
00:14:06
Speaker
It says he consulted mediums, which are people who talk to spirits and spiritists, other people who talk to spirits. And then it says he did much evil in the Lord's eyes.
00:14:22
Speaker
Then he set up the carved image of Asherah that he made in the house ah of the Lord.
00:14:30
Speaker
So he did many things that were evil. And I wanted to point out that God didn't just say that he sinned, but that he was doing things that were evil. Today, we have things just like this that people do.
00:14:44
Speaker
We have, as I mentioned, looking to the future with tarot cards. We have people who go see psychics. They played the Ouija board game. They practice witchcraft.
00:14:55
Speaker
They are worshiping false gods like Buddha. They worship animals. They believe that people have been born again into other things like bugs and animals and other people.
00:15:10
Speaker
And none of these things are following what God tells us is true. So all of these things are the same types of things that King Manasseh was doing way back then.
00:15:23
Speaker
And God considered them evil and they are just as evil today as they were then.
00:15:33
Speaker
We want to but see here that he didn't just do these things himself because he was a leader. He was the king. We've talked about before that the God takes it very seriously when we lead people astray.
00:15:51
Speaker
We are to be good examples, to be light of the world so that people can be brought to God because as we've been reading, God wants everybody to come to him.
00:16:02
Speaker
Everybody. God loves everybody in the world, but he does not want people to worship false gods. He wants people to come to him. And Manasseh was leading his people astray.
00:16:19
Speaker
Do you remember we talked about in our in our previous readings at different times that Jesus even tells us that it is better for a man to have a big stone tied around his neck called a millstone, which is used for grinding wheat and other grains to make flour,
00:16:41
Speaker
and thrown into the sea than it is for us to lead even one of God's children astray. So it is not okay for us to lead people astray, which means we need to be good examples.
00:16:56
Speaker
When people see us doing bad things, taking part in playing with the tarot cards or joining in and and not saying to people, that's not okay, that's wrong, I'm not going to do that.
00:17:10
Speaker
If we follow along and do these things, then other people think, oh, well, it must be okay. And that's not good. God wants us to lead people to him, not astray.
00:17:24
Speaker
So we wanna be sure for our daily application that we are not taking part in the world's activities, that we are not conforming to the patterns of this world, that we are in the world, but not being of the world.
00:17:40
Speaker
And we also wanna talk about God's forgiveness. We want to remember that even though he sinned and did what was evil and God gave him consequence because we learn that God disciplines those whom he loves and he still loved Manasseh.

Forgiveness and Worship Practices

00:17:58
Speaker
Even though Manasseh did wrong things, God still loved him and God always still loves us even though we sin. And so he forgave Manasseh when Manasseh prayed to him, he brought Manasseh home.
00:18:16
Speaker
And then Manasseh worshiped God and he he took away all the idols and he put the worship house back the way it was supposed to be. But he says that he did allow the people to worship God wherever they wanted.
00:18:29
Speaker
And we know that God wanted himself to only be worshiped in his worship house, not just wherever people wanted to be. At that point in time, the only acceptable place was to worship God at church, at the worship house.
00:18:45
Speaker
And there was only one. There weren't many of them. So they were still doing sinful things by not obeying how God wanted to be worshiped.
00:18:57
Speaker
But we see that God did forgive King Manasseh and he tried to make it right. And so that lets us know that no matter what we have done, then the new covenant, it tells us that there is nothing that can separate us from the love of God that it is in Christ Jesus.
00:19:16
Speaker
And even before there was Jesus, we see that there was nothing that could separate God's love. He still loved King Manasseh and he forgave him.
00:19:30
Speaker
And God will forgive us too. When we are faithful to confess our sins,
00:19:38
Speaker
i like um I wanted to bring up Nahum chapter 2, verse 1. it's in our If you're reading along in the Day by Day Kids Bible, it does not note that chapter 2, verse 1 is where the last ah section comes, where it gives us prophecy about Jesus.
00:19:55
Speaker
But I was trying to find it in my big Bible, and I was going, where is it? Where is it? Where is it? God said, go a little bit further. And sure enough, it was the first verse of chapter 2.
00:20:08
Speaker
So we see here that Nahum is bringing us prophecy about Jesus. And we know that at least in the book of Joel and Nahum and Isaiah, they all brought us prophecies about Jesus who would be coming.
00:20:25
Speaker
And it says here in our prophecy about Jesus, it says someone one is bringing good news to God's people. He is bringing news of peace. Notice how over and over.
00:20:38
Speaker
God tells us that the but that the message that Jesus would be bringing was the message of peace. God would be bringing peace. His anger would no longer be there. He doesn't just get angry all the at us like that anymore.
00:20:55
Speaker
He's forgiven us for our sins. And that's a wonderful thing.

Prophecies of Jesus in Nahum

00:21:00
Speaker
And we talked about that peace is really just a very simplified word. But there is so much more because the original word in Hebrew is shalom, which we learned means to be well, to be whole, to be healed.
00:21:18
Speaker
And so we see even here.
00:21:22
Speaker
that God was was giving reassurance. Although he would be bringing judgment Nineveh, he was always bringing reassurance to his people that things were going to get better. He was not going to leave them forever.
00:21:41
Speaker
There would be an end to their discipline. And that not only that, but it would be good news. So it's very important to notice where Jesus is spoken about in the prophecies.
00:21:56
Speaker
And when I read in my big Bible about that, it actually takes me back to where we were reading yesterday, where we were reading in but Romans chapter 10, think it was.
00:22:14
Speaker
Let's see here. We're going to go to
00:22:23
Speaker
Nahum chapter 2. And it says.
00:22:29
Speaker
and actually gives us a little bit more detail here. It says. Behold upon the mountains are the feet of him bringing good news.
00:22:39
Speaker
Proclaiming shalom.
00:22:43
Speaker
And we looked at yesterday. ah Romans chapter 10.
00:22:49
Speaker
Where Paul is speaking. And we talked about when he was explaining how God was going to be using good out of his people's disbelief in the Messiah, because it would bring the good news to the Gentiles, which is you and me.
00:23:10
Speaker
And we talked about that God would send people all over the world to proclaim this good news. And we just very briefly mentioned that we have read in the past where blessed are the feet that carry good news.
00:23:26
Speaker
And Paul tells us that the word, okay it says, for with the heart, it is believed for righteousness. And with the mouth, it is confessed for salvation.
00:23:39
Speaker
For the scripture says,
00:23:44
Speaker
ah just a moment here. I think I'm at the wrong verse here.
00:23:54
Speaker
Sorry about that. need to get to, there we go. chap i'm going to start in verse 14. It says, how then
00:24:06
Speaker
shall they call on the one in whom they have not trusted? Meaning the Gentiles. How then shall the Gentiles call on the one in whom they have not trusted? And how shall they trust in the one they have not heard of?
00:24:19
Speaker
And how shall they hear without someone proclaiming it? And how shall they proclaim unless they are sent? As it is written, how beautiful are the feet of those who proclaim good news of good things.
00:24:39
Speaker
So I wanted to bring that up because that's what we were talking about yesterday, is that God was going to be sending. And here we read again in Nahum. So remember this a version of our Bible is written chronologically.
00:24:53
Speaker
So we are reading that God is sending the exact same message through different prophets at about the same time. God is very consistent.
00:25:04
Speaker
He is bringing us the same message twice. He is telling us that he will send people to then all over the world to bring everybody to know him.
00:25:17
Speaker
And so that's why it's important for us to see for our daily application that God is consistent And that he does send people and that that is why he is, he is sending people so that we will be able to witness to people to let them know that Jesus is the way and the truth and the light and the life.

Sharing Experiences of Forgiveness

00:25:40
Speaker
So we want to remember, like we talked about yesterday, to be witnesses of these things that although to let people know that although they are sinning, God will forgive them. There is nothing that they could do or have ever done or will do that will separate them from God's love, just like it didn't separate Manasseh from God's love, just like it didn't separate God's love from you because a witness experiences things with God and then tells people about it.
00:26:14
Speaker
You can share times where you have been ah sinful, where you've done something wrong, and then you share with people how God forgave you for that and how you felt after that.
00:26:26
Speaker
And then you will be one who is sent, bringing good news to people in the world and being a good example just like we talked about earlier. So it all ties together for our daily application today.

Call to Action: Be a Light

00:26:41
Speaker
We are the witnesses for God who are sent to everybody in the world, whoever you run into today, whoever you talk to, and you're talking to people and God will bring conversations to you.
00:26:56
Speaker
You don't have to even go searching them out because God will bring people to you sometimes. And I know he does with me and those conversations, you can talk to people about the wonderful things that God has done.
00:27:12
Speaker
And then you will be witnessing.
00:27:15
Speaker
So I hope that you feel that today's reading has lit your light and that you feel equipped to go out and be the light of the world. And so if you are feeling that God has lit your light, let's see you click that light button that looks like a thumbs up. It looks like a heart, but it's really a light button.
00:27:34
Speaker
And together we can draw people's attention with our light to this event so that we can point people to reading God's word. so that they can hear this message.
00:27:45
Speaker
This message is part of my witnessing to get this out for people to know. so And so you can be part of that by clicking your light button. So thank you for being here with me as we spread the word about reading God's word.
00:28:02
Speaker
And I will be here for everyone again tomorrow.
