Today's reading will cover Isaiah Chapters 58-61. Today we will read about WHY God found it necessary to send us intercession- someone to go to God on our behalf- and who He would send. We will read that despite following rules about how to worship God and asking God for things the people were not worshipping God with their hearts. At the same time they were fasting they were treating each other poorly and misbehaving. God explained that this was not the intention of things such as fasting. God noticed that no one was interceding for His people on their behalf- such as the the way that Abraham had done for his nephew Lot, the way Moses had done for the people, or the way Elijah had done for Israel. Since no one was interceding for the people God would do it himself. He sent us Jesus to intercede for our sins and He sent us the Holy Spirit to intercede for us in our weakness, when we don't know how to pray as we should. Romans 8:26-27 tells us that God knows the mind of the Holy Spirit and that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us with groans too deep for words for ALL of us, according to the will of God! God's tells us today that when He would give us the Holy Spirit it would never leave us and it would be for everyone, rather than as before that time the Spirit of God would come upon people and leave people as God chose. Now we would have the Holy Spirit FOREVER! God's gifts that He has bestowed upon us are so much greater than we understand. Let us do our best to learn about the gifts that God has given us and USE them the way He intended, instead of just putting them on a shelf, not understanding or using them, like a gift we don't think we need or know how to use but accept and acknowledge that we have received.

Introduction & Purpose

00:00:03
Speaker
Hello everybody! Welcome to June 10th. You are here with Robin at In The Family Way Coaching and we are here for our daily Bible reading. We are going through the Day by Day Kids Bible and it is written by Karen Henley.
00:00:19
Speaker
Thank you so much for being here whether you are following along on a podcast or watching on video. I'm so glad that you are here and that you are listening to the Bible with me this year. We are getting a great view of the big picture here in this day by day kids Bible and it is it is just been fantastic.
00:00:37
Speaker
We are learning so much about the the big story. This it's so much easier to understand in context with the way that this is laid out in a chronological timeline.
00:00:50
Speaker
I'm really happy with how this has been going.

Challenges with Translation & Commitment

00:00:53
Speaker
So I hope you have enjoyed seeing and understanding the events that are going to be leading up to the birth of Jesus here in the next couple of weeks.
00:01:03
Speaker
If you are following along on your commitment calendar, it's time to get that out and your sticker or however you're marking your calendar off because you're about to hear the Bible today.
00:01:17
Speaker
We are going to be reading in the book of Isaiah, continuing in that, and we are going to be reading through chapters 58, 59, 60, and 61.
00:01:34
Speaker
Now, i'm I'm actually unsatisfied with the translation for chapter 58, because ah Nobody is perfect. And I think that this chapter is is, is not an accurate translation.
00:01:50
Speaker
So I am going to read from the big Bible today in my tree of life version for just that chapter. It is ah not the chapter that pertains so much to our um
00:02:06
Speaker
daily application well it it does So what we're going to be seeing, I'm going to give you a little bit of overview. Let me step back a moment. So we are reading here in the book of Isaiah, and we are noticing that there is a lot written about ah Jesus and the Holy Spirit and the covenant that God will be making with his people.
00:02:27
Speaker
So Isaiah is is showing that are going be the the big picture of what's been going wrong with God's people and why it was absolutely necessary for him to send Jesus to be the savior, our redeemer, our salvation for our sins.

Religious Practices & True Devotion

00:02:48
Speaker
And so the chapter 58 that we're going to be reading is actually quite relevant. I misspoke. And think that's a good overview of what is going wrong with the people in the world.
00:03:06
Speaker
and and this is pointing out that the people are practicing religion, but we're still seeing that despite God's many ah teachings, that they need to follow with their heart that this is not the case.
00:03:26
Speaker
So what we're going to be reading in chapter 58 is the people complaining about the fact that they are following the guidelines for what they're supposed to be doing in terms of ah attending and following fasting.
00:03:45
Speaker
But what God is going to be explaining here is that just attending and doing acts such as fasting is what they're going to be referring to. Fasting is when you don't eat for a certain period of time.
00:04:01
Speaker
And they're gonna be complaining that although they've been fasting, God is not listening or hearing their prayers. And God is going to be explaining that while they are fasting, they are misbehaving right in the middle of doing it.
00:04:18
Speaker
It's kinda like showing up to church And then arguing with people there and gossiping and um not having a heart toward God.
00:04:31
Speaker
God is looking for our heart. That has always been his goal. He gave the Torah. the rules to live by because people didn't know how to live.
00:04:44
Speaker
And so now they view the Torah as just, you know, that as long as that they follow the rules that they're that they will ah be in alignment with God, that they will be reconciled with God.
00:04:58
Speaker
But just following rules on the outside is not what God is looking for. He was looking for them to be an example of how we are to behave. But if you are not changing on the inside and in thinking about how to do things right and why it's the right thing to do, then we've missed the point altogether.
00:05:23
Speaker
And so that is why God eventually needed to send his Holy Spirit to us so that the law would finally be on our hearts. But as we read yesterday, the um the law and the Spirit on our hearts is only for those who agree, who come to agreement with God to be reconciled with God for free.
00:05:47
Speaker
that they are not able to figure this out on their own. We have a lot of people that we will see people doing good in the world, even though they're not believers, and they think that they are just a good person, but that doesn't reconcile them with God.
00:06:04
Speaker
God wants our heart, not just our actions. and God sees the heart. So what God is telling us is that that it needs to be on our heart.
00:06:15
Speaker
And so he corrects that when he sends the Holy Spirit. And that's what we will be reading about today. So we're going to start with chapter 58.
00:06:27
Speaker
And it says, Cry aloud. Oh, this is God speaking. Cry aloud. Do not hold back. Raise your voice like a shofar.
00:06:39
Speaker
Tell my people their transgression and the house of Jacob their sins. Yet they seek me day to day and delight to know my ways as if they were a nation that did right and had not forsaken their God's decree.
00:06:54
Speaker
They ask me for righteous judgments. They delight in the nearness of God. Why have we fasted yet you do not see? Why have we afflicted our souls and yet you don't notice?
00:07:10
Speaker
Behold, in the day of your fast, you seek your own pleasures. You exploit your laborers. Behold, you fast for strife and contention and to strike with a wicked fist.
00:07:27
Speaker
You should not fast as you do today to make your voice heard on high. Is this the fast I have chosen? a day for one to afflict his soul as if to bow his head like a reed and spreading out sackcloth and ashes?
00:07:44
Speaker
Will you call this but at fast a day acceptable to the Lord? Is not this the fast that I choose? to release the bonds of wickedness, to untie the cords of the yoke and let the oppressed go free, and to tear off every yoke?
00:08:06
Speaker
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, to bring the homeless poor into your house, when you see the naked, to cover him, and not hide yourself from your own flesh and blood?
00:08:20
Speaker
Then your light will break forth like the dawn and your healing will speed up. It will spring up quickly. Your righteous will go before you and the glory of the Lord as your rear guard.
00:08:35
Speaker
Then you will call and the Lord will answer. You will cry and he will say, here I am. If you get rid of that yoke among you, which is finger pointing and bad mouthing,
00:08:50
Speaker
If you give yourself to the hungry and satisfy the desires of those who are hurt, then your light will rise in darkness and your gloom will be like midday.
00:09:02
Speaker
Then the Lord will guide you continually, satisfy your soul in times of dry and strengthen your bones. You will be like a watered garden, like a spring of water whose waters never fail.
00:09:19
Speaker
And some of you will rebuild the ancient ruins, will raise up the age-old foundations, will be called repairer of the breach, restorer of streets for dwelling.

Observance of the Sabbath

00:09:35
Speaker
If you turn your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on my holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy day of the Lord honorable,
00:09:47
Speaker
If you honor the Sabbath, not going your own ways, not seeking your own pleasures, nor speaking your usual speech, then you will delight yourself in the Lord, and I will let you ride over the heights of the earth.
00:10:03
Speaker
I will feed you with the heritage of your father Jacob, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.
00:10:14
Speaker
There was your verse, Julie. I recognize that even in our reading today.
00:10:23
Speaker
Your name. Isaiah chapter 59, like a spider's web.
00:10:31
Speaker
God's arm is not too short to save you. His ear is not too stopped up to hear you. You are to blame for what you did. and You have lied and said bad things.
00:10:46
Speaker
Nobody tries to be fair. Nobody tells the truth. People just fuss a lot and tell lies. They plan trouble, so bad things happen, and it's like baby snakes coming out of snake eggs.
00:11:02
Speaker
It's like spinning a spider's web. People do wrong things. They are mean. They think bad thoughts. God looked at this and he was not happy.
00:11:16
Speaker
Nobody was being fair and God was upset that there wasn't anyone to help you. So he did it himself with his own arm.
00:11:28
Speaker
And he will pay back his enemies for what they did. And he will be angry with them. And then people will treat God's name with care. From west and east they will wonder at his greatness.
00:11:42
Speaker
The enemies might come in like rushing water, but God's spirit will push them back. This is the promise I make to them, says God.
00:11:55
Speaker
My spirit is on you. My words are in your mouth. My spirit and my words won't leave your mouth.
00:12:06
Speaker
They won't leave your children. They won't leave their families from now on, says God.
00:12:15
Speaker
Chapter 60 Get up and shine. Get up and shine. Your light is here. God's greatness shines on you.
00:12:27
Speaker
Nations will come to the light you show. Kings will come to your brightness. Your gates will always be open. They won't ever shut, day or night.
00:12:40
Speaker
The sun won't be light in your daytime, and the moon won't shine on you. God will be your light forever. Sad times will be gone.
00:12:52
Speaker
All your people will do what is right. They'll have their land for forever. i am God. I will do this quickly when it is time.
00:13:04
Speaker
Isaiah chapter 61, God chose me.

Role of Intercessors & Jesus

00:13:10
Speaker
God's spirit is on me. God chose me to teach good news to poor people.
00:13:18
Speaker
He sent me to care for people with sad hearts. He sent me to tell people in jail they can see me, they can be free. He sent me to tell about God's kind love.
00:13:31
Speaker
He sent me to tell how God pays people back for doing wrong. He sent me to cheer up people who cry. He sent me to give them beauty.
00:13:42
Speaker
He sent me to make them glad. And he sent me to help them praise.
00:13:51
Speaker
And that's the end of our reading today.
00:13:57
Speaker
So it's important to understand why God needed to send Jesus because the people were not able to do on their own.
00:14:09
Speaker
But our daily application here is that
00:14:16
Speaker
God looked at the fact that there wasn't anyone to help us. What he's referring to and what he says in the big Bible here is that there was nobody interceding for us, for the people then.
00:14:32
Speaker
In the past, they had intercessors, a person who went before God on their behalf. And nobody was coming forward to speak on the people's behalf.
00:14:44
Speaker
So who did they have previously? Well, the first, they had Moses. Moses was the first person to intercede for them. They also had
00:15:00
Speaker
Abraham. Actually, Abraham was the first to intercede. This list is not in order. Abraham interceded. In Genesis, we see how God works with Abraham's intercession.
00:15:13
Speaker
Abraham negotiated the terms of Sodom and Gomorrah's salvation. He was interceding for his nephew Lot.
00:15:25
Speaker
Elijah was an intercessor. Elijah was calling out to God to reveal his power to the Israelites so that they would know that the Lord is God. And God responded to Elijah's prayers.
00:15:40
Speaker
And he worked with the people to accomplish spiritual breakthrough on the earth.
00:15:49
Speaker
Daniel was an intercessor. As he prayed, angelic response was released. And after much battle in the heavenly realms, the angel made it to Daniel with the answer.
00:16:07
Speaker
And it says here that we intercede for people. We contribute to the heavenly battle being waged over people and nations as we step into the place of intercession because our prayers matter.
00:16:20
Speaker
Nobody was praying for anybody else. Isn't that interesting? Nobody was interceding for anybody else. God looked and he saw no one. And so he needed to send Jesus and he sent the Holy Spirit.
00:16:39
Speaker
So we're going to be looking at some verses about that.
00:16:45
Speaker
i I wanted to say that I think it's just absolutely incredible how God is step stepping us with this learning about the Holy Spirit. God is explaining that he is doing something different.
00:16:58
Speaker
And it's important for us to know what would be coming so that Jesus would be able to be understood. We see that God was making promises as to what he was going to be doing.
00:17:11
Speaker
We read today that this is the promise I make to them. My spirit is on you. My words are in your mouth. My spirit and my words won't leave your mouth.
00:17:24
Speaker
They won't leave your children. They won't leave their families from now on. In the past, having God's spirit upon someone was temporary thing.
00:17:35
Speaker
It wasn't something that people had all of the time. they would When people would have God's spirit, they would prophesy and it would be maybe for just a few people. It wasn't going to be for everybody at that time.
00:17:49
Speaker
But now, now God is doing something different. And when he brought Jesus, it was so that we could have the Holy Spirit, which we just celebrated the his arrival.
00:18:00
Speaker
it's like it's like our It's like our birthday for the Holy Spirit. And so it was it's important for God to explain that this is what's going to be different now.
00:18:11
Speaker
And this is why he did it. I love how God always explains to us why he's doing things. So we're going to look at ah first Jesus, because Jesus ah sent us the Holy Spirit, we as we read the other day.
00:18:28
Speaker
And Jesus priest a priest who intercedes for us, he because he atones for our sins. And we read in ah Hebrews chapter seven.
00:18:43
Speaker
We're gonna start there.
00:18:46
Speaker
Let's see.
00:18:49
Speaker
Hebrews chapter seven.
00:18:55
Speaker
My Bible is on my app here on my phone.

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

00:19:02
Speaker
which is another thing I was going to mention, is that it's we have so much to learn that we don't know about the Holy Spirit. There is so much that we have been given, like we explained yesterday, with Shalom being a gift that we've just sort of kept on a shelf, not knowing what to do with.
00:19:23
Speaker
It's like having one of these phones, We have now what we call smartphones, and phones for a little while have been able to do more than just be phones. We have our calculator on there, we have messaging, we've had internet, and now we've got other apps that track our health supposedly, and we put banking apps on there,
00:19:46
Speaker
and you can have games on there, and then you've got your social media, and it's just the list goes on and on and on. But in that same way, the Holy Spirit is like our phones having all of these features.
00:20:04
Speaker
The Holy Spirit has all of these characteristics. And we simply don't know how to use lose everything that we've been given. Like we said yesterday, we don't know what to do. We've just got this gift and we just go, oh, okay, that's great. Wow, that's great. God has given us this.
00:20:25
Speaker
We have his Holy Spirit, but we are not using the Holy Spirit to his full capacity. We aren't, not that we need to use our phones to our full capacity.
00:20:37
Speaker
There are so many apps out there and it's like, we just need to minimize and say, okay, okay, what do I actually need? But with the Holy Spirit, every characteristic of the Holy Spirit, we need.
00:20:49
Speaker
And we need to learn how to use the Holy Spirit the way we are intended. We need to access the gifts that God has given us and use them.
00:21:01
Speaker
There's nothing more insulting than than giving somebody this wonderful gift that you have thoughtfully chosen and given to somebody just for them to say, oh, that's nice, and then stick it away and never use it.
00:21:16
Speaker
I know that frustrates me. i don't like to give gifts to people. Like, I would get very frustrated with my husband. I would give him gifts, and he would just say, oh, okay, and he would never open them.
00:21:29
Speaker
They would stay in the package forever. And I would say, well, why don't you open this up and watch this video? Why don't you, you said you wanted it. I got you something you said you wanted. and we want, to we say we want an outpouring of the Holy Spirit, but yet he has given us outpouring of the Holy Spirit and we are not using gift that he has given us.
00:21:53
Speaker
So we need to access these gifts, not just have them. So first, God sent Jesus to be our intercessor and he paid the price for our sins, which we know.
00:22:09
Speaker
And he was so he was declared to be a priest.
00:22:16
Speaker
In Hebrews chapter six, we read that Jesus has entered the, let's see, go back so that it's understandable.

Melchizedek & Jesus' Priesthood

00:22:30
Speaker
Ah, Jesus has entered the inner place behind the curtain. So remember when Jesus died, the veil was torn in the temple from top to bottom.
00:22:42
Speaker
Jesus is now our high priest. Jesus has entered there in that place, the behind the inner place behind the curtain, as a forerunner on our behalf, having become high priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.
00:23:01
Speaker
If you are unfamiliar with that word in the in the order of Melchizedek, Melchizedek was a priest that Abraham, sacrifice brought a tenth to after he saved ah his family from capture and defeated these nations and he took plunder he took ah treasure back with him and riches he took property back as his own now and he gave a tenth of it to the high priest of god
00:23:34
Speaker
way back then. and he wasn't declared to be a priest like, like in Aaron's family, he was already a high priest and his name was Melchizedek.
00:23:45
Speaker
So we read in Psalm chapter 10, Psalm 10 chapter ah verse four, that the Lord has sworn and will not change his mind. You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
00:23:59
Speaker
So Melchizedek would be honored by being having being remembered and Jesus was is our high priest forever according to the high ah according to um the order of Melchizedek.
00:24:19
Speaker
So we have that, that Jesus has been declared the high priest And then we go to Hebrews chapter seven and it tells about Melchizedek. He says, for this Melchizedek was king of Salem, priest of God most high.
00:24:36
Speaker
And he met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him. and to abraham And to him, Abraham gave 10th of everything. Now the name Melchizedek translated means king of righteousness,
00:24:52
Speaker
And then also king of Salem, which means king of Shalom, king of peace, which we talked about yesterday. So Melchizedek's name, he was king of Salem, means king of Shalom.
00:25:09
Speaker
So this is the forerunner of Jesus, who, as we read yesterday, is the prince of peace.
00:25:20
Speaker
So then we have, we talk about down below in Hebrew seven.
00:25:32
Speaker
Such a high priest was fitting for us, holy, guiltless, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens. He has no need to offer up sacrifices day by day like those of the other high priests, first for their own sins and then for the sins of people.
00:25:50
Speaker
For when he offered up himself, he did this once for all. For the Torah appoints a high priest of men who have weaknesses, but the word of the promise which came after the Torah appoints a son made perfect forever.
00:26:07
Speaker
So here we are seeing God explaining what he is doing. And what he will do when he sends Jesus. And why he sent Jesus.
00:26:19
Speaker
Nobody was interceding for us. So God was sending Jesus to be our high priest and intercede for our sins. Now it doesn't stop there. he Then Jesus sent us who?
00:26:32
Speaker
The Holy Spirit. That's right. So does the Holy Spirit intercede for us as well? You betcha. We are going to go to Romans chapter eight, where we are going to read.

Life Through the Spirit

00:26:50
Speaker
Where did it go?
00:26:56
Speaker
Romans chapter eight,
00:27:00
Speaker
where it has a whole section. Chapter eight is talking about life in the spirit. where it talks about now we have no condemnation for those of us who are in Jesus.
00:27:12
Speaker
For the law of the spirit of life in Jesus has set us free from sin and death because it was impossible in the Torah And God sent his own son, the likeness, so that the requirements of the Torah would be fulfilled in us, us who do not walk according to the flesh now, but according to the spirit.
00:27:33
Speaker
So now we walk according to the spirit. And for those who live according to the flesh, those are the people who are not yet believers. They set their minds on things of the flesh, but those who live according to the spirit set their minds on the things of the spirit.
00:27:51
Speaker
For the mindset of the flesh is death, but the mindset of the spirit is life and shalom.
00:27:59
Speaker
And we are in the spirit.
00:28:03
Speaker
And the spirit himself, Romans chapter 8 verse 16, the spirit himself is a witness with our spirit that we are children of God.
00:28:18
Speaker
For we know that the whole creation, verse 22, groans together and suffers birth pains until now, and not only creation, but even ourselves. We who have the first fruits of the Spirit groan inwardly as we eagerly await for the adoption, the redemption of our body.
00:28:39
Speaker
chapter Verse 25,
00:28:43
Speaker
then we eagerly wait for it with perseverance and in the same way the spirit help in our weakness for we do not know how to pray as we should but the spirit himself intereddees for us with groans too deep for words
00:29:06
Speaker
And he who searches the heart, that is God, knows the mind of the Spirit because the Spirit intercedes for the saints, which is according to the will of God.
00:29:24
Speaker
When we know that we need something and we just don't even know what to pray for, we need to ask the Holy Spirit to intercede for us on our behalf.

Unity with the Divine

00:29:38
Speaker
That is a gift. The Holy Spirit is meant to do that. When you are hurting and you don't even know what you need, the Holy Spirit will intercede on your behalf and ask God for what you don't even know what to ask for.
00:29:58
Speaker
What an amazing gift that is.
00:30:03
Speaker
And that is what God is teaching us today in our reading in Isaiah, that he was going to be sending the Spirit and Jesus to intercede, to go to God for us in ways we couldn't.
00:30:19
Speaker
We are now one with God and one with Jesus and one with the Spirit. We are made whole, but we don't know how to access and use all of that power, all of those gifts that God has given us.
00:30:38
Speaker
So it is my prayer today that you will ask the Holy Spirit to help you become aware of these gifts that he has given you. that you will use the Holy Spirit to go to God for you when you don't even know what you need.
00:30:54
Speaker
You just know that you need something. When you are hurting and you don't even know what to ask for, ask the Holy Spirit and he will intercede for you.
00:31:06
Speaker
I did that just this morning. i have so much difficulty with my daughter. i just don't even know what to do. just gives me such a bad time. And I don't know what to do about her.
00:31:20
Speaker
And so I asked the Holy Spirit after reading this to intercede for me. And it's it's that the the peace that God gives you through that because he is our comforter.
00:31:35
Speaker
And he comforted me so that i know he has gone to God on my behalf. And I love that. That is what God wants us to do. He wants us to go to him, which we've talked about.
00:31:49
Speaker
But sometimes we don't even know what to go to him about. That's the job of the Holy Spirit.
00:31:58
Speaker
So I pray that you will use the Holy Spirit and become more aware of the gifts that he has given us so that you can learn to use them. No matter how old you are or how old or how young you are.
00:32:14
Speaker
And so if you feel that God has lit your light with this knowledge that he is giving us, then I ask that you would click that light button as we delight in learning about him. And we encourage others to learn about God as well, because we know that God has told us that it delights him for us to know him.
