00:00:04
Speaker
you
00:01:28
Speaker
Welcome everybody to another edition Speedway Stories. It's your boy Wally and Johnny here. evening First thing first, I want to give a shout out to the chatter's box. What's up, Pat? Daniel Zempheus.
00:01:42
Speaker
And also, to if nobody's heard this the sad news today, NASCAR just lost. Kyle Busch just passed away today from what I found out from some medical complications I guess he had.
00:01:56
Speaker
from being sick the last few days. So I wanted to shout out in pairs to his family real quick before we get the ball rolling here

Guest: Evan Collins Introduction

00:02:04
Speaker
tonight. um Yes, sir. I've got got a couple special guests here. um i got one right now. Unfortunately, the other is kind of having, we're having a little technical difficulties connecting with each other.
00:02:17
Speaker
But I'm going to go ahead and bring Evan Collins up here get this show started. Good evening, Evans. Thanks for joining us, man. Howdy. How are you guys?
00:02:28
Speaker
Doing all right. We're here, buddy. We're here. It's still kicking, so. Yeah.
00:02:36
Speaker
So if you would like to, sir, I will turn the floor over to you. Let everybody know a little bit about yourself. What got you into the motorsports hobby and everything else. Morgan, don't you start your shit already, boy.
00:02:48
Speaker
I'm sorry. I saw Morgan's name pop up and we're starting early tonight. Um, ah Man, I am ah born and raised in L.A., lower Arkansas.
00:03:04
Speaker
ah We didn't have a lot of a lot of things to do down here. So mom and dad always used to take me to the local monster truck shows and the tough truck shows. And ah I just fell in love immediately. that i had just As you can see behind me, I have a little bit of ah of a problem. I eat, sleep, and breathe.
00:03:26
Speaker
this industry and i've been very very blessed to get to meet some really cool people in it and uh get to go on the road with a couple different uh promotions and meet some people and do some things so uh it's been an absolute dream come true it's just been awesome Hey, it's better than having a drug problem, even though it'd probably be cheaper.
00:03:47
Speaker
It's worse. It's much worse. Oh yeah.

Outlaw Nationals Preview

00:03:50
Speaker
That motor, the motor sports bug is, it is, it is a, it could be a double edged sword, man. But, uh, but yeah, um, you had some stuff you wanted to share about enough big upcoming race.
00:04:04
Speaker
Morgan, you keep your mouth quiet about it. We've already talked about it, but if you'd like to share, um, What's coming up for you here the first weekend in June? so ah First weekend in June, and ah Morgan can attest to this, but ah Wally, it's Miami. Miami. Miami.
00:04:25
Speaker
If you say it any other way, they will crucify you up there. It's Miami, Oklahoma. It's the 45th anniversary of the Outlaw Nationals. ah I have said for years that it is a contender to be, if they ever truly did like a monster truck, independent world finals. I mean, it is that good of a production and a show.
00:04:50
Speaker
ah the people that have been know that. And if you haven't been, you need to go. And I know a lot of people say that about a lot of different shows, but this needs to be a bucket list show for everybody. It is absolute top tier talent ah in the Midwest and on the independent scene for monster trucks and tough trucks, both.
00:05:12
Speaker
Yeah, i've been I've been following that along since YouTube's been out and they've been able to actually post videos out there. That would definitely be a bucket list. Not only the race, but even just to go out and watch. And Zempheus, yes, I know I'm a Yankee. Shut up.
00:05:31
Speaker
Zempheus works at Lucas Oil Speedway there in Missouri. Love Lucas Oil. Beautiful Speedway. Yep. He's ah he's their he's their main main dude there, and he's been a loyal loyal follower of of the network. Yeah.
00:05:51
Speaker
but
00:05:56
Speaker
Oh, he was actually talking to you, not me. That's not nice now, Xampius. He just complimented your racetrack, man. You're fired.
00:06:08
Speaker
yeah um Yeah, I keep hearing that, especially for the Pro Tough Truck guys, that's like the one of the ultimate bucket lists for for independent shows for everybody to race at.
00:06:22
Speaker
it It is. it's It is a great show. um We have the the pro class, obviously, and we also have the stalker class. It had such a drawing ah years ago that they actually had to limit the entries because it and it it stepped on a lot of toes and made some people upset. But from a production point of view, you know, these guys, the ah it's the crew at Matt Motorsports, I think,
00:06:49
Speaker
I can't take credit for their production, but it is Matt Motorsports puts on the show. And they had to limit the amount of entries because just getting swarmed with, you know, 30, 40 different tough trucks showing up. And it's hard to run a show with that many people and that many trucks. and Good evening, Devin.
00:07:12
Speaker
Good evening, Joe. Devin. i I'm glad you're able to join us, man. Sorry for the emails being in the pain in the butt sending you the link, bud. I'm sorry about that. No, it's fine.
00:07:25
Speaker
perfect I'm glad to have you up here, man. yeah Yes, Morgan, you're right. Morgan's hitting on both of you. Now you even said for Devin.
00:07:37
Speaker
but He didn't do that. just as yeah As you were saying, Evan, sorry about that. No, of would they ah the Matt Motorsports crew had no choice but to limit the amount of entries because, I mean, you're talking an hour just to get through qualifying. And at some point, from a fan's point of view, it just gets too monotonous. it's just And that's nothing against the guys racing whatsoever. But when you get down to truck number...
00:08:11
Speaker
30 and truck number 40. I mean, it's,

Evan's New Truck Debut

00:08:14
Speaker
it's just too much. So they actually had to limit how many trucks could race just so we could get on with the show and get, get a flow going. Uh, and it's still a great show. I think it's capped off at 20. I might be off on that, but I mean,
00:08:29
Speaker
20 trucks is still a heck of a lot. That's a lot of trucks because the Jamborees when they were running, I remember it was like the top 16. It was the top 16 when they ran off for the Jamborees. So, I mean, because they capped it at that. but
00:08:47
Speaker
So, Evan, I'm going to ask you real quick. Who's your biggest competition when you're you do that race? when you're there? Oh man. Uh, well, funny you asked that. So I, I did race a stalker there one year.
00:09:03
Speaker
ah I have not actually made my pro debut yet. However, i am, uh, pleased to say that I've been working feverishly on a brand new truck with some help of some friends and family, and I'll actually be debuting it this year. Uh, it's the first time I've said that or posted that, but, uh,
00:09:22
Speaker
I've been working really hard and had some great, great people helping me and we've been fighting to get this truck done. It's been a fight every step of the way, but we're going to get it done and we're actually going to debut it at Miami this year. So it'll be the 45th anniversary and I'll also be able to debut my own truck there at that show.

Devin Scott's Journey

00:09:42
Speaker
I've had the pleasure and the joy to drive Plum Nuts, which is owned by Jason Bono and the Bono crew. And that truck has been A great, great truck.
00:09:53
Speaker
ah Devin Jones with Barbarian and Crush Roo built that truck, started with it. So for me, just to be able to get to pilot it for a couple shows last year, that was a dream come true. That was that was really something special. So my hat's off to Jason for just letting me drive it around and beat it up and wreck it. Hell yeah.
00:10:14
Speaker
Nice. All right, Devin, we're going to turn the floor over to you, buddy. If you would like to introduce yourself, let us know, let the fans in the comments and stuff know a little bit about yourself, what got you into the hobby, and and talk about your upcoming race the first weekend of June.
00:10:33
Speaker
Well, I'm Devin Scott, and I'm the driver of Flatfoot. I can't really tell you how what got me into it. Young kid with a lot of hopes and dreams.
00:10:46
Speaker
The show Miami is a very big show. And I know. We're going to have fun and tear it up. Heck yeah, man. I'm looking forward to seeing some videos from it and stuff for this year and everything. you I'm sorry, Devin. You went to school with Morgan. I feel bad for you, bud. That's been many years ago.
00:11:14
Speaker
could quickly take take the victim So did you, do for your tough truck career, did you start out like most of us do, workre straight into the stock class, or did you jump into the pro, basically, what we call a modified?
00:11:32
Speaker
When I was probably 15 16 years old. and drove it in miama two nights done fairly decent in it and then it was like three years later
00:11:50
Speaker
started his reception's cutting in out on them as receptions cutting in and out on
00:12:07
Speaker
He froze. it a yeah I can say it while his feed's catching up. I can say he, uh, uh, he started off in a little Ford Ranger, just like something you'd take off the street.
00:12:19
Speaker
And I mean,

Devin's Pro Truck Success

00:12:20
Speaker
he fell in love with it enough to the point he's built a full blown, pro competition truck and he's top three or four everywhere we go, if he doesn't break something. So, I mean, that's, that's just a testament to,
00:12:34
Speaker
letting the sport get you by the horns is just showing up, doing a stock class, having fun with it and, uh, going home and building a full blown competition truck. So, yeah, that's a, it's a, it's a good thing. Um, yeah, I've been, my first one i ever i ran for here, i actually had a 78 power wagon that had a one barrel carburetor on the three, eight, two.
00:12:59
Speaker
I shoved the motor clear back into the firewall. yeah look at the football so And there you are.
00:13:12
Speaker
Can you hear
00:13:19
Speaker
Nope. I don't think you can. Looks like he's working on it. Yeah. That's that Oklahoma phone reception. Yeah. Down in down down the hollers there.
00:13:35
Speaker
I don't want to cooperate for him. But would you like one day, Evan, while he's unfortunately fighting with his phone, would you like to ever be a wheel man for a monster truck?
00:13:49
Speaker
Oh, gosh. Yeah. Gee, Wally, I don't not know. No. Yeah. So little bit about me. I hate to take the spotlight off the show, but ah I actually stepped away for a couple of years to start a company. So I came back home, started a towing and recovery coming company and got a couple of tow trucks and just working here in Western Arkansas.
00:14:18
Speaker
And ah the goal in mind is to buy a monster truck. That, that is one of the end goals. I mean, you, everybody's got to work. You got to have a job. We all know that.
00:14:29
Speaker
And great racing's not cheap. If you're in this type money, yeah it's just, you're not looking at the bigger picture. I mean, you can make money doing it. It can be profitable, but realistically we're just all in it to have

Evan's Monster Truck Dream

00:14:43
Speaker
fun. Devin will tell you the same thing.
00:14:46
Speaker
Uh, we're, we're all here to have fun and have a good time. Uh, But yes, the end game for me one day is to absolutely buy a truck. It's going to take a couple years, obviously, but it's going to happen. I've been very fortunate. You're going to live that dream. Yes. Never give up on your dream. I didn't think I would be here. I didn't think I'd be debuting a truck at the biggest show in the Midwest. I mean, that alone right there for me is a bucket list.
00:15:16
Speaker
sir. you know i grew up and I'm here because of guys like ah Robert Hand in Barefoot and Pat Pulley in Trouble, ah Devin Jones in Barbarian, um That freaking truck would come out of the tunnel in Fort Smith.
00:15:33
Speaker
Our little stadium here is a tin can. It's not soundproof whatsoever. I mean, I was six or seven years old. Just ears were bleeding to the monster trucks coming out, but it was so worth it. I wouldn't change anything about it.
00:15:48
Speaker
Devin, it's understandable, buddy. well definite I'll definitely get you back up here, man. i get i get You're trying to enjoy the Memorial Day weekend. I appreciate the effort and everything else. I will get with Evan to stay in contact with you that way, and we'll get something set up and have you guys both back up here when you're able to, man. Good time to you, at least for a little bit, man. Yeah.
00:16:12
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, that would be awesome to hear in a couple years have you back back up here on the show and Be able to go, look, I got it. It's the monster truck sitting out here. Yeah. as I was telling Morgan, um I think it would be neat if there was a way we could get everybody to meet out there in Oklahoma at that fairgrounds, have an East Coast, West Coast, and the Midwest battle of the pro-tough trucks,
00:16:47
Speaker
to find out actually which side of the country is the top drivers. I think that'd be really cool. I couldn't agree more. And honest to goodness, I think we could sell some tickets doing it too. I think it would have a following.
00:17:02
Speaker
I think people would travel

Nationwide Tough Truck Competition?

00:17:04
Speaker
to it. I think if it had the right, uh, the right guy leading the charge, I think it would be great. Uh, we've, we've got some, uh, irons in the fire. Uh, I can't really say anything yet, but that would, uh,
00:17:17
Speaker
Yeah, we're ah you're working on it. That's all can Yeah, because, I mean, like I told Morgan, because of all the I mean, I've got a lot of the guys here that and they their trucks and stuff that would, you know, break say like bring your top five, top ten pro guys.
00:17:37
Speaker
from Most of them are from here in Ohio, and some of them are from Pennsylvania and stuff. come out that way, get Larry, but get with Larry McCormick out there and Cali and stuff and get those guys from out there, come out there, hang out, have a, how do a Friday, Saturday, Sunday deal, Sunday, wrapping it up and find out who, you know, the top dogs are, but have a good time and make a bunch of new friends in person sharing the same passion. Oh yeah.
00:18:04
Speaker
Oh, we could, we could absolutely do it. Now i would be tickled paint to get Larry McCormick out here. That would be awesome. Uh, I had a great conversation. It's probably been at least a year ago, but I had a great conversation with ah Tony Martinez with the Bulletproof truck about coming down here and doing some stuff. and ah we yeah i hate it I hate that it's the same excuse, but it's just ah it's just a fuel thing. Racing ain't cheap. It is. man going cross thanks pretty early You know, you're talking thousands of dollars just to get there and then you throw in a hotel and then it's just, yeah it's just one of those deals. We all have jobs, we all have families and you just have to budget yourself. So, I mean, look at me. It's taken me ah every bit of two years just to build my truck and then having the full-time job on top of that, working at night, working at, it's just been a,
00:18:59
Speaker
long couple years, but it's going to be worth it. It's all going be worth it in the end. Yes, sir. Hey, Morgan, to answer that question, I've i've met Pat at the Jamborees, and I'm really good friends with the gentleman that actually owns his old truck right now, and he's he just finished second in our Ohio Point Series this this past season with a different body on that truck. so Yeah, Pat, dude, he was another one that He'd leave it hang. um
00:19:31
Speaker
When the jamborees were going on, it always came down for the points races. He was always one of the top two guys. But for five years in a row, he had to sit behind, unfortunately, behind the Ohio guy in the points for five years straight. But he never, he made him earn every bit of that that those championships during the jamboree times when they were doing the the modified championship. But Pat's a damn good dude, but yes, his truck is still out there. Chassis is still out there running.
00:20:04
Speaker
It's right here. Actually, about 20 minutes away from me, where I live in Ohio. Are you talking about Pat Hulley? No, Winchester. He's out of New York.
00:20:16
Speaker
Oh, shit. So if we did the east and west, we would have northern Pat and southern Pat. That would be a great race right there. I'm telling you. yeah. I appreciate it.
00:20:28
Speaker
yeah Yeah. Yeah. And Pat and Pat Pulley. I loved it when he came up. He surprised me. I, I tried to get him on the show for almost three months and Morgan pulled some strings and actually got him up here on the show for about a half hour, which was awesome because I've talked to a fucking cool messenger a lot. Yeah.
00:20:48
Speaker
Pat is awesome. Pat is one of the reasons that I'm here. i mean, he took the time to talk to me and sign my T-shirt and never was too busy. And that just always stuck with me and made an impression on me. So like i'm I'm a fan of the monster trucks, but I mean, I'm there for the tough trucks. That's my bread and butter. That's why I'm there. yeah And Pat was always one of my favorites growing up and he still is. Yeah.
00:21:15
Speaker
I'm hoping I get to line up with him this coming up weekend, first week of June. I got ah two weeks ago in Russellville, Arkansas, I got to load his truck.
00:21:26
Speaker
So I got to drive it for 50 foot, 60 foot. But just to drive it that much just on the trailer, that was that was cool for me. I was trying not to get excited over something that small. Hell yeah. good How can you not? How can you not when it was somebody, yeah like you said, you look you've been looking up to and you know in this sport. And you get to actually sit in the driver's seat.
00:21:50
Speaker
drive the drive the truck he watched him been racing and put it help load it on the trailer yeah I'd be I'm sorry I'd be like I'm sorry i was just walking by walking by minding my own business and he just hollered at me he's like hey are you bored I'm like what why what and he's like you want to park my truck for me I'm i'm gonna go to the restroom or something I was like sure yeah I'll drive it I don't care so hell yeah
00:22:19
Speaker
So between that race coming up, do you got any other big races you plan on doing after the trucks, when after you debut the new truck? Uh, I believe right after that, I don't have the schedule in front of me. I believe right after that, June 20th, we're going to be in a Fort Smith, Arkansas, some hometown show for me, uh, with, uh, crush zone, new promotion coming up, uh, through the rankings.
00:22:48
Speaker
And, uh, we're going to be with, uh, Caden Berry and his crew and doing the Fort Smith show. And it's always been a great show good turnout it's a small indoor arena it's kind of reminiscent of the old thunder national stuff from back in the day it's just a great show and i mean for me it's hometown it's 10 minutes from my house so it don't get much better than that oh yeah you can't you can't beat that devin always him and his family are great people they always come down and and stay and we just have a great time when everybody comes to town oh yeah nice that and that's so And that's the thing. When I talk to some, even having my buddies on here, um that's what they say about, you know, the the Tough Truck community is, yeah, yeah we got everybody's got a couple of bad apples, but normally everybody's there. Something happens, but everybody's willing to give a hand. It doesn't matter what it is. If they can help, they help. And I'm sure you guys have got that tight-knit group as well. out there like we have here. So we, we do. I mean, I, I said it earlier and I'll say it again. Yeah. We all want to win. Don't get me wrong. We wouldn't be here if we did. However, we're all friends. We all get along. I don't care who wins.
00:24:06
Speaker
oh yeah When the helmet goes on, may the best man win, you know, I'm a wolf. yeah But if, if Pat wins, if Devin wins, it's, it's great. I, I, I could, I could go on and on about all the different guys we have and all the talent we have.
00:24:25
Speaker
ah ah Another example, a couple of weeks ago in Russellville, Colby Coulter out of ah ah Jefferson city, Missouri. We don't see him a whole lot because he lived so far away, but every time he shows up, unless he breaks, he's top three. And you're going to hear me say that about everybody we talk about, but I mean, everybody that races with this group is just so close in talent and how they do. it's just always a great show, uh, no matter what town we're in. And I love when we get the people that you don't see every weekend. Cause there are some people that live farther away than others and don't get to race as much as some other people. So I love when we get people from out of town and get people that can put on a great show.
00:25:08
Speaker
And from, and from what I heard, you guys are going you guys are going to have some of those people, coming up that weekend and everything else that you might get the race once or twice or maybe three times a year.
00:25:20
Speaker
Yeah. um'm Coming to the show. So it's going to be going to be a good time for everybody, especially if the weather cooperates compared to what it was last year. I will say this about Miami. It past seems like past couple of years. It's either flood or heat stroke. There, there is no in between, uh, every once in a while, it'll be a beautiful, nice weekend, but, the past few years, it's either been absolute, uh, monsoon, or it's just been, an absolute desert sunstorm, no breeze.
00:25:55
Speaker
Oh, I want um can't remember what year, uh, I can't remember what year it was. It wasn't too terribly long ago. um The fairgrounds was actually flooded. It's on the banks of the river there.
00:26:10
Speaker
And it flooded like the day before the show or two days before the show. And it ruined the entire fairgrounds. And man, I'll tell you, that crew at MAP went in there and worked day and night and got that place done, fixed, painted. I mean, they were pushing dirt and mud. Yeah.
00:26:29
Speaker
until doors opened and they let fans in the building. Uh, they, they weren't nonstop to get that. We had to redirect the traffic cause the roads were flooded. I mean, every year, if it's not a sold out show, it's close to my knowledge. It's sold out every year, the pits, the general admission, everything. um yeah man and even with the town being flooded, it was still a very, very close to a sellout. So that just tells you a testament about the town and that region for Tough Truck Racing. Not only that, that and the promoter and how the town the promoter and the town come together they can continue the tradition of this show.
00:27:11
Speaker
for Like you said, this is 45 years this year. That's a long long time to have yes the same show constantly going on and being consistent weather-wise and everything else too.

Community Management & Promotion

00:27:26
Speaker
And that's that's awesome. You don't see that hardly anymore. don
00:27:34
Speaker
ah go Go ahead, Johnny. I was just going to say it shows your repetitiveness is working. You found that you found that formula for what you're doing.
00:27:42
Speaker
Well, um'm i'm I'm a rookie when it comes to this group. I mean, I've been with them for a few years. I was very, very fortunate enough to get the the blessing from ah Peggy Wells and Charlie Wells, who used to campaign the rough stuff truck back in the day.
00:27:58
Speaker
Great people. Love them to death. I actually approached Peggy and I said, hey, can I run your Facebook page? I'm not saying you're not doing a good job, but can I run your Facebook page? Just cause I I've got the time and ah Charlie at the time was dealing with some health problems and she was just like, yes, absolutely. Yeah. Please take it over, run it, do it, do with it what you will. So I got the opportunity to run the Facebook page and to keep the schedule and be able to,
00:28:28
Speaker
get behind the scenes of it. And, uh, I've tried to, you know, as Morgan pointed out, tried to do some hats and shirts and, uh, just trying to, uh, keep a schedule for the guys. Uh, uh, try to, um, be the ring master for these guys. If you will just be that guy, they can all be like, Hey, do you know what time, what it just helps everybody. It helps the flow just to have that guy.
00:28:56
Speaker
cool just kind of leading the charge. So I'm, I'm, I'm happy to be that guy. don't mind doing it one bit.
00:29:05
Speaker
Morgan. I need one of those hats. I'm a hat guy. All right. I've got some organ. I got a whole box. I'm staring at them. I've got one with your name on it.
00:29:16
Speaker
Uh, when we get up there. Yeah, that, that's like here we have, uh, one, we got a, the, uh, uh, Ohio race, tough truck series.
00:29:28
Speaker
And it keeps a schedule. They keep a schedule of all the fair races. And now they've started to ask, adding the ah monster truck shows that are having, having the rough, the tough truck races at.
00:29:39
Speaker
So we can all us drivers can keep up with it. It's pretty neat.
00:29:45
Speaker
Yeah, it's great. That, uh, the Ohio crew up there and the, uh, the jamboree, uh, that's a bucket list for me. I haven't had the chance to go up there yet, but I'll definitely make the job. If I make the jog to Jamboree, y'all will have to come down from Miami one year. We can pass. Oh, yeah. Pass on the interstate. Yeah.
00:30:02
Speaker
Yeah, well, the the only downfall with Ohio is and what sucks. They're still working on it since the original people that started the Jamboree finally got back into it two years ago.
00:30:12
Speaker
Right now, Indy and Pennsylvania are the only Jamborees right now that they got back. But they're trying to work on bringing it back to Ohio because when it was in Lima, it was the largest jamboree out of all three of them and stuff. So they've been having a hard time finding a place that they can get back into to start putting it back on here. So right now it's Bloomsburg and Indianapolis for the jamborees.
00:30:40
Speaker
Yeah. It's a great group. Like I said, I haven't had the chance to go check it out, but I've pretty much watched about every YouTube video you can about the Jamboree series. And I mean, it's just a it's just a good good production, good people, a good talent in the racers they get, monsters and tough trucks included. It's it's yeah just a great group.
00:31:04
Speaker
Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah, like I said, we get especially when you get that crew, like with Pat and his guys, and then you get the guys out of a the Foytoy crew out of Pennsylvania, and then you get the us Ohio guys together.
00:31:19
Speaker
Man, you talk about a modified Pro Tough Truck show that gets put on for a whole weekend. it was It was always a good time, and and it was fun afterwards hanging out at night around campfire ring over at the campers and shooting the shit and just having a good time.
00:31:35
Speaker
All right, I like it.
00:31:38
Speaker
I ah went up to ah two or three years ago, went up to DeCoin, Illinois with the MOD crew, ah Monsters of Destruction, and got to do that arena. And that was my first, ah that was my, it was indoor, beautiful building, ah but there was snow outside.
00:31:57
Speaker
And I've never done, I'm from Arkansas. We don't get a whole lot of snow. We get our one day a year and that's it. So to go up there and to do something where we were, We were all huddled out the back door in our car hearts waiting to race because we were just freezing our butts off. And I'm not used to that. And that was a lot of fun. That was a great, great weekend. And I had a ball. And again, I i got the chance to drive plum nuts in Illinois with ah Jason Bono and his blessing. So that was that was a great show for me. up there with Cody and Mike and the guys.
00:32:31
Speaker
i wish they would i wish they'd do good I love how I've been seeing with a lot of the monster truck promoters throughout the the Midwest and over here you know in the eastern side.
00:32:42
Speaker
During the wintertime, starting to include the tough trucks now like they used to back in the day when TNT horsepower on tina TNN, you'd have the in-between the monster trucks you had trucking.
00:32:58
Speaker
tractor pool or you had the stadium trucks as they called them which is just the pro touring and it's neat to see bringing back history that i grew up on watching on tv and it is yeah we've uh we've started it's going to sound bad when i say it we've started pushing the safety a little bit more and i don't even mean like we weren't before we've just started bringing it more up, ah keeping it more in your face. We've dabbled with the idea of actually putting shutoff switches on tough trucks. We had a guy a couple of years ago in, I believe it was West Plains, Missouri, got knocked out and ah got injured because he he was knocked out. He was unconscious and he just wrote ran right into a wall.
00:33:49
Speaker
so we've dabbled with the idea of putting uh rii's that was the word i'm looking for our eyes on ah yeah tough trucks just like the monsters have that way the officials can shut them off because i mean we don't have the horsepower the monsters do we don't have the size we're still in a we're still in a vehicle we're still traveling at a high rate of speed as i say the speed you some of these tracks you guys can get with these trucks i mean it's still pretty damn quick and And something like that getting knocked out, you you're not going there's no way to shut it off. And unfortunately, it what happened with him hitting the wall, if they had that, it would have shut it off and kind of coasted and probably a little more.

Safety Innovations in Racing

00:34:31
Speaker
But it wouldn't be nearly as bad as it was, like you said, if you had something like that. Safety has always been a big priority. I mean, knock on wood, we always have a checklist we go through. Everybody that we kind of is in our group, we pretty much know everybody is smart enough to have the, you know, correct harnesses, the correct specifications, map.
00:34:57
Speaker
Wet Miami does a great job at looking at the trucks, ah taking care of everything. um Even the stalkers, you know, they'll make sure they got the right helmet, make sure they got right equipment. We never want anybody to go out there and get hurt because, yeah, we're here to have fun and we're here to race. But at the end of the day, if you get hurt,
00:35:16
Speaker
I mean, you still have a job. You still have a family. You have to provide for your family. So if you break a leg racing tough trucks, then your day job come Monday morning, they're not going to care. So safety should always be the biggest thing for us and working on making that more of a factor for the tough truck guys.
00:35:37
Speaker
Morgan, I couldn't agree more, especially those, the mega trucks, man, they're putting out just as much horsepower as a monster truck, except They're on a skinnier tire is all they are, and they don't sit as high.
00:35:50
Speaker
But, yeah, I i would and i would have totally agree on the on them having them as well because, I mean, I've seen some of those get out of hand, and that people can't get them shut off in time. I mean, I've seen the videos of them and It gets wild in those trucks too.
00:36:06
Speaker
Oh, yeah.
00:36:09
Speaker
Yeah, we what were we're still playing with the concept. ah it's we've We've always said it's like herding cats, getting everybody on the same page and getting everybody getting everybody to sit down and talk about it. But yeah, we've me and Devin and some promoters have ah all said we would love to to just put our eyes on the trucks to have the red and green lights, to have the RIs, to have that, that extra step in safety, uh, just to make sure everybody goes, goes home safe at the end of the day.
00:36:42
Speaker
Yeah. I'm a, I'm a hundred percent for it. Um, actually one of the promoters I had on the show, monster truck promoters, it's a J.R. Rouse out of full throttle.
00:36:54
Speaker
He's out of Indiana. Um, we were actually talking about, If his Tough Truck series takes off after this year, and within a couple years, he was actually talking about making all the pro trucks have that.
00:37:10
Speaker
And that was only going to be for the pro modified trucks. And not he was not going to allow like stock vehicles run any of the shows unless it was the pro modified to have that system on it.
00:37:22
Speaker
Oh, unfortunately, the stalkers, as they're called, they they do get a bad rap because typically that's where you do get your injuries and get your rollovers and stuff. Not to say that the pro guys don't roll over Pat, if you're watching.
00:37:37
Speaker
ah But yeah, the stalkers do typically get hurt more and ah have more problems like that. We've tried to, again, dabble with the idea of continuing to grow the stock class.
00:37:52
Speaker
but at least make them have a roll cage. If nothing else without the IRI, ah have the stalkers, you know, hey, we're we want you here. We're happy you're here. You should at least put a roll cage in it. There was ah a accident. I don't know the details on it. I just know it happened a year or two ago. A gentleman passed away in ah Iowa somewhere of racing a stalker, had an accident rolled over, and he passed away.
00:38:22
Speaker
And that's just the harsh reality of racing. I mean, look, today we're doing this podcast. And, you know, as most people know, we lost Kyle Busch today. Not from a racing-related accident, but, I mean, ah you know, he was perfectly fine and he got sick.
00:38:39
Speaker
And that's just, you know, you never know when today's going to be your last day. So we we want the stalkers to come out.
00:38:51
Speaker
But, I don't know, Pat, see that comment. We want the stockers to come out and have a good time, but we want them to understand that we want them to have fun and be safe doing it. So we're going to try to push for stockers to at least take the initiative to put a roll cage in their game. Exactly.
00:39:11
Speaker
Well, and that's like here in Ohio. With our fair circuit, we have the stocks and what we call the modifieds, which are art your class, the pro mods out there. um we've had the last three years, we've had incidences with the stock class.
00:39:29
Speaker
One guy ended up throttle sticking. That was a misfortune that happened, went into a crowd. And then we had two of them literally in front of the fair boards at these shows, admitted they did not have breaks and they caused bodily damage to people.
00:39:45
Speaker
Damn near killed two of my best friends while they were in staging lane. There, man, I should know his name. And I, if I'm not mistaken, Pat Pulley might've been at the show I'm referring to, but there's a famous um tough truck accident from ah Tulsa, Oklahoma ah that,
00:40:09
Speaker
uh, took Calvin Carrington from us. Uh, and it, it was, you know, a guy doing something under the influence. Uh, I wasn't there. i don't know. i just know what happened. And I mean, we lost a great person because of it. So, uh, we have to, as racers, uh, be smart enough to know that we need to always just keep the safety in mind, keep it in front of us. ah
00:40:40
Speaker
People get sick of hearing us talk about it, but it's the truth. You know you mentioned the car going into the crowd, ah people behind the scenes. ah you know this is I'm all for drinking beer and having a good time, but that needs to be after. It doesn't need to be during. yeah Exactly.
00:40:59
Speaker
It just needs to be you know, at the house afterward with all your friends, not at the track. And yeah a lot of people don't agree with that, but we just don't want nobody to get hurt. That's all it is. It's strictly a safety thing. Well, well not and I, I 100% agree. Go ahead, Johnny. Sorry about that, buddy. Go ahead. All I was going to say is, um, well, I've done stuff on the, uh, the motorbike scene in the past and well, I'll be honest with you. Um, I'm a cannabis smoker. I wouldn't smoke fuck tons and then get behind the fucking bike though.
00:41:30
Speaker
Yeah, absolutely. i um it it's just It's got to have its place, and the place just isn't at the racetrack. I support it.
00:41:40
Speaker
ah i I lost my father a couple years ago, and the only thing that soothed him in his final days was cannabis. that was That was it. There was no medicine. There was no milk. There was no nothing. it it was cannabis that took the pain away. So I support it. I believe in it. I think it's got a purpose. It's just not at the racetrack. Exactly.
00:42:05
Speaker
get you. But my my thing is, is like we've been, a lot of us guys in my group here, we've literally wanted to get the, like do an end of the year thing and get everybody that holds fare boards that hold a rough truck event at their fairs every year, sit down and kind of have an enforcement a little bit on the safety aspect, making sure they're, know, you can tell if somebody's been drinking or smoking by just walking up to them.
00:42:37
Speaker
yeah um But they need to do they need to do a better job of, how do I say, screening people a little bit on their stuff.

Importance of Brake Inspections

00:42:47
Speaker
We do have one fair up here.
00:42:50
Speaker
They literally inspect and make sure your brakes, they make you do a 15-yard little mini run and lock your brakes up. and if you And it doesn't stop within the where they have a marker.
00:43:03
Speaker
You get trailered. they They throw them on the trailer. They're like, you're not running because your brakes are not not suitable enough to be on the track. And I agree with that 100%. I haven't seen that test yet in the tough world, but that that's a great idea, and it's a great point. I've seen it in the ah derby car world.
00:43:23
Speaker
Oh, yeah. I've had to go through it
00:43:28
Speaker
You've got to have brakes. You can do whatever you want. You can have fun, but you've got have brakes. That's just part of it. Yep. Yeah. But, yeah. Yeah, it's just it's just sad that the common sense is kind of gone on that aspect in the safety-wise on a lot of this stuff, and it's unfortunate. Yeah.
00:43:47
Speaker
We're very lucky. the The group we have, ah I'm not going I know there's some people out there that are going to have you know their opinions, and that's fine. But we've got a really good group. ah i I'm not going to point the finger at anybody or name call anybody. I'm not here for that, but we've got it a great group and everybody is on the same page and everybody's here to have fun and everybody is good with the safety aspect side of things. So we're hoping to get some more promoters on board and do some things where we're trying to work on possibly some kind of point series. It's still in the works. ah It's early stages.

Establishing a Racing Point Series

00:44:31
Speaker
But when you get guys in this sport that have to like, like Devin not being in here because of the phone issues, you get some guys that have to work and miss a show.
00:44:43
Speaker
Uh, I'm getting married in October, so I'm going to miss a show in October. One of the big shows here, but it's for a good cause. Uh, so, um, you, uh,
00:44:58
Speaker
to get everybody on the same page for a point series, uh, we're working on it and we're talking about it. We just have to find that, uh, rhythm of everybody because it's not fair to have this group at one show.
00:45:13
Speaker
And then you have a totally different group at this show. And how do those guys work? do a point series if you have guys that aren't at certain shows. So we've just got to sit down with some different promoters and talk about it and just get that ball rolling. but we i will ah I will actually shoot you the layout kind of idea, give you an idea how our point series works.
00:45:36
Speaker
that my buddy Tyler Peters put together. That's the owner of the Pat Winchester chassis. He's the one that put the series together. i will send you a copy of what he does.
00:45:47
Speaker
they They have eight-point races, if I remember right, and they only count six of them. You get two drops in the season is the way they do it. So i will send i will shoot you through Messenger his thing on that so you can have kind of a base idea of the move forward a little more to get sort of the ideas out there for the guys, but the that's how we do it. He has it set up for us here. So great. I'm i'm all about it. Anything to, anything to help this grow. I'm all about it.
00:46:18
Speaker
Heck yeah, man. That's awesome. Johnny, you got any questions for Evan you want to ask buddy? I,
00:46:29
Speaker
Yeah, put you on the spot. I know. It's all right, man. I'm just thinking because I think we covered a lot of it. Shit. Honestly, a lot of things I was going to ask were covered during the speakeasy here.
00:46:43
Speaker
And we'll, ah I mean, we'll we'll, I'll be able to get y'all in contact with some other other guys. We'll get some other guys on here so y'all don't have to. hear me talk all the time, but i'm okay with it.
00:46:54
Speaker
We'll get Devin on here too, whenever he's got some better reception. So yeah, that'd be, a theory I'll be, I'll be honest with you. I can have, I'll let you know now, Evan, I can have up to 12 people on a panel at a time. yep If need be, i think it'd be neat to do a night where we have the Midwest tough truck community.
00:47:13
Speaker
We can get people together and we'll do a panel that way one night sometime. and have the guys all up here where we can get a feel from everybody's point of view, like yours, that's and they're getting devs and stuff? Well, about 80% of them are in Oklahoma, so we'll see how the feed goes. Hell, I might as well just tell you guys, a get with you guys in June to see if you got reception at the races, catch you at the end of the race one of the nights. Here, we're going to do a panel on a Saturday night after you're done racing, if you want. Yeah.
00:47:48
Speaker
luck Luckily for us, uh, the monster blog is based out of Missouri. So they've made my Emma one of their yearly stops. And, uh, we're fortunate enough that they record pretty much record the entire show. And that's always been great to, uh, have them there with their cameras and their people.
00:48:08
Speaker
Uh, I think I want to say up in your neck of the woods. Uh, I'm behind a couple years after stepping away, but, ah I used to be a big fan fan of ah Back Channel Productions. Did the stuff up in Pennsylvania. new york he' was still He's still dabbling a little bit in it. But last year, he took the summer off.
00:48:30
Speaker
But, yeah, he that that channel, ah man, I got to meet him actually ah at our one of the shows here that he helped with Tim Howard and those guys yeah put on at Hartford Fair here in Ohio.
00:48:45
Speaker
nicest nicest guy you would ever meet and for somebody doing what he does he is very shy until yeah until he warms up to you he was very shy at first i i'm gonna i'm gonna jab at him because he's not here but uh uh devon i love him to death He don't talk a whole lot. So I was excited to get him on here. So I'm sure his service is the reason that he couldn't be on here. But I was really looking for it. It's a saving grace tonight. Exactly. But, yeah, man, other than that, I really don't have any more questions unless

Acknowledgments & Gratitude

00:49:27
Speaker
there's anything else. You want to shout out some sponsors and the people behind the scenes and stuff that's helped you along the way?
00:49:37
Speaker
Oh man. of Oh gosh. There's so many people to name. i just, I guess start off. ah I'm trying to pull up our Facebook page and I feel bad that I don't know the name off the top of my head, but ah first of all, shout out my mom and dad. I mean, they're the reason I'm obsessed with this sport. They took me to the shows back in the late nineties, early two thousands. Uh,
00:50:06
Speaker
um Just, you know, we didn't have a lot of money, but they still made sure we got to go to the monster truck show. So that always stuck with me. no Shout out WR Designs 849 Hat Company has hooked us up with some hats.
00:50:24
Speaker
ah We've sold a few on their websites and you can get ah you can get a hat shipped right to your house at MidwestToughTrucks.com. It's an updated design. I've got the old the old design. ah Updated flat bills. You can get it shipped right to your house.
00:50:42
Speaker
ah alright just And get your swag before the Outlaw Nationals. I'm going to have to because it's going to be all gone by when that weekend comes.
00:50:56
Speaker
I keep a supply of them. I'm ah oh if I get down to a handful, I'll usually order another batch. So I usually keep them in stock. Uh, I guess just cause he's in the comments, uh, shout out to Pat pulley.
00:51:12
Speaker
I've said it earlier. I'll say it again. Pat's the reason, one of the reasons I'm here. Pat's just a great guy. He was in the comments. He was talking about, uh, the jump and, I'll tell a quick story on Pat. He, uh, uh,
00:51:27
Speaker
yeah when they jump Yeah. The jump, the little jump. That's, that's only half a line, half a truth. He was qualifying at the track in Lamar.
00:51:38
Speaker
And um I don't know whether he forgot where he was or saw a good looking girl in the stands or something, but he, he, he just forgot where he was for a split second. And I'm telling you, he aired that truck out.
00:51:53
Speaker
And it landed like a loaded dump truck. I mean, it was all on the frame, all on the ground. He didn't get hurt. He was fine. I'm pretty sure it rung his bell a little bit. But he landed from probably 20 foot in front of me.
00:52:10
Speaker
And I just looked right at him. And it looked like the old Tweety Bird cartoon with the birds dancing around. Oh, geez. Oh, geez. yeah Yeah, I don't know.
00:52:21
Speaker
i don't put a number on it. I don't know how much air he got, but he got enough air that it rung his bell. and that So that's his little jump. The little jump? The little jump, yeah. so So I take it, Pat, you were trying to be the star instead of the monster trucks, huh?
00:52:39
Speaker
i yeah yeah I used to joke with him about, ah Pat, you going to jump the bus tonight? And then all of a sudden one night he said, sure. And I was like, oh, I got to quit saying that. He's actually going to do it.
00:52:53
Speaker
i love i love Pat to death, and I'm i'm glad he's Still a part of this. I'm not going to say nothing about his age. I know. Oh, I'm going i'm gonna call him out on it because has referred to him as our ah elder statesman of the group. So he's ah he's been awesome. I can't say enough. couple things about Pat, he's just a great, great guy.
00:53:18
Speaker
There you go, Morgan. You just got called out by by Morgan. Yeah. It's a new truck, Morgan. My wife's going to kill me if I just send it ass over tea kettle. So I might have to get a couple shows out of it before we do that. But ah yeah, I'm not afraid to hit the cars at all. i yeah The end game for me is to be in a monster truck one day. So you got to start somewhere.
00:53:42
Speaker
Yeah. you But yeah, when I had, when Morgan had Pat up here on the show, and and you've attested to it, For him to be at the age he's doing and still going out having fun in this sport speaks volumes.
00:53:57
Speaker
and it's And like I told him on the show, you just raised the bar for the rest of us in the younger generation that the fun is still there at the age you're performing at and you're enjoying yourself. I said, thanks for putting a target on all the rest of our backs because you're making us look bad out here at this age having a great time. Yeah.
00:54:19
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, I...
00:54:24
Speaker
Morgan's trying to get you in trouble. I know. I know. What did I do to Morgan? No, i ah Pat, if you're still in the comments, I feel bad, and I'm the nerd with the group, but I should know, I truly don't remember how many years he's been racing. I don't know if he's ever just come out and said it, but I am 30, and and I know he's been racing 30 years. So, uh, he's, uh, for him to be still doing what he's doing. And, ah that right there is a great example of the safety. Pat's always, uh, he's always done the jumps, put the show on for the people, but he's always shown up with the right gear, the right helmet, the right harness. His truck's always in tip top shape.
00:55:11
Speaker
Uh, a truck always runs good. 23 years. think we're cutting that a little short. I think he's got the numbers backwards. Yeah, I think he's 32. That little jump in Lamar, that should be 32. But, yeah, Pat's a testament to just what am I trying to say? Pat's a testament to having fun, putting on a show,
00:55:38
Speaker
and having, being safe doing it. You know, he's always went out and he knows what his truck can do and can't do. And ah yeah, I can do a lot about Pat, but we'll save that for another day.
00:55:52
Speaker
Morgan's getting them now that little jump messing with you, Pat. Oh, geez. see you're doing mar Morgan's on one tonight. He's getting all of us tonight. could But I really want, I appreciate you coming on, Evan. Good luck coming up.
00:56:07
Speaker
and on your debut, of the new truck and stuff, I wish you the best. Thank you again. And I'm looking forward to definitely having you back on the show with Devin.
00:56:18
Speaker
And like I said, maybe we can get, we can get a panel of the Midwest and maybe Morgan can find some free time and, and join and we can, we can all sit back and enjoy ourselves and laugh trucks and stuff.
00:56:32
Speaker
Morgan. I haven't, I haven't taken the passenger seat out yet. So be careful what you wish for. because i say kidnap Morgan and put him in the passenger seat. I call it now.
00:56:47
Speaker
Hey, we, uh, another story for another day. We could put Morgan in the passenger seat with a camera and, ah we might have to bleep a few cuss words, but, uh, we'll make it happen.
00:56:58
Speaker
Oh, there you go Morgan said he's in.
00:57:03
Speaker
But, Yeah, I really appreciate you coming up, man, and stuff. and Likewise. i'll good I'll get with you after after June 4th and 5th weekend, and maybe we can set something up, and you guys can talk about you your debut and how it went for you and everything, and we'll get back together. Thanks again, Evan, for coming up, man. I really appreciate it.
00:57:23
Speaker
Awesome. Thank you, guys. I appreciate it. yeah You have a good night, man. Have good night.
00:57:31
Speaker
Yeah. Thank you all in the chatters box and everything for tuning in the tonight. I'm sorry. Unfortunately, Devin had a little issues with reception and stuff, but I really appreciate Evan from the Midwest tough trucks coming up here, talking and everything else. Um, I'm looking to forward to having the crew up here. If we get a chance to, um, we'll find out the results and stuff from the outlaw show coming up the first weekend, uh, first weekend of June. Um,
00:58:01
Speaker
Look out for on the YouTube channels and stuff, and make sure you follow Matt Motorsports on Facebook and everything. Morgan will have pictures, all that stuff. Hey, Morgan, can I bring up about the Thursday before the show if you're still in the chat box there, buddy?
00:58:22
Speaker
But, yeah, I appreciate everybody tuning in, being involved in this. Keep supporting this. Not only the network, but my podcast as well and everything else, this whole channel.
00:58:34
Speaker
Until the next time, you guys all have a great Memorial Day weekend. Stay safe. Be smart. with you with um And I'll catch you guys next Thursday. Sounds good.
00:58:47
Speaker
Got you, Morgan. You all have a good evening. We'll see you guys on the next one. Bye. Thank you. know
