Dien's is fine. So we apologize. We hope you can make it through this episode.
00:00:28
Speaker
Things will be back to normal next week. But for right now, enjoy our review of The One With The Gem.
00:00:41
Speaker
Hello and welcome to this week's episode of the Purple Door Podcast, a Friends Rewatch Pod. I'm one of your hosts, Alistair, alongside Deanne. Deanne, how are you today?
00:00:53
Speaker
i'm ah i'm I'm awesome, but man, yes. Yay Christmas. Yes, yay for Christmas. Yesterday was was Happy Christmas or Merry Christmas Eve Eve, but today is actually Merry Christmas Eve.
00:01:08
Speaker
There you go. Yes. Recording in time to release on the Christmas morning itself.

Weather and Christmas Traditions

00:01:16
Speaker
Put this one out in the morning. So that's quite exciting to have an actual Christmas Day episode.
00:01:22
Speaker
Yeah, that is exciting. oh wella ho oh i Indeed, it doesn't feel like Christmas outside here in the in the Dallas suburbs. It's ridiculously warm. It was 80 Fahrenheit, about 26 degrees Celsius for those back home.
00:01:40
Speaker
Far too hot for Christmas. i mean, it was a very nice day, don't get me wrong. Lovely weather, but it doesn't feel like Christmas. That is accurate. However, i and I've been saying this this whole season, I will take the warm, even though, and I'll just choose to ignore global warming and, you know, it's the way it is. But I remember being a kid wearing shorts on Christmas Day, playing outside, riding bikes and things.
00:02:09
Speaker
And so know that, you that it's, this happens periodically. Right. But um I will take a nice warm day where my fingers don't hurt and it's, you know, your face burns going in and out of places and all that. I will take a nice balmy day anytime. Anytime. Well, I am very happy for you. It was a nice day. I'm not going to lie. It's just weird that it's Christmas.
00:02:39
Speaker
There is no cold. Yeah. I'm not sure it'll show up, though. Well, I think next week it's meant to cool back off again and be a little gray and gloomy as of next Monday, I think.
00:02:53
Speaker
better home But probably very few people listening outside the two of us are worried about the weather in North Texas. That's probably true. Probably true.
00:03:05
Speaker
So much of our life revolves around it. but Right, right. that is Oh, dear. But, Amy, what's all your big plans for for Christmas Day? What are you guys up to?
00:03:17
Speaker
ah Well, we have our like family tradition every year. you know The boys wake up, we wake up. There's a test roll that I prepare on Christmas Eve. And then it sits in the refrigerator overnight. And then that way, Christmas morning, I just preheat the oven and throw it in. And it's delicious.
00:03:37
Speaker
Excellent. My parents and Joseph's mom and sister come over. We open presents, eat breakfast, and watch it. you know, whatever, play the games and everything. And then my brother and his family are going to come over and we'll open more presents and hang out, visit, have lunch.
00:04:01
Speaker
And then Joseph in his brain, he thinks he's going to work on a car or something. I don't know. But he thinks that I just plan on playing games and hanging around at home all day.
00:04:13
Speaker
I love it. Oh, what about y'all? Y'all have a very first Christmas happening. That's right. We're grandparents at Christmas for the first time ever. So, Lenny will be over here, which is just the greatest.
00:04:29
Speaker
Yeah, I mean, we are... we will be at home all day tomorrow people coming and going i suspect um you know kate and i have five kids who are but in various stages of life between being at home and being away and one is married one is engaged um so it's not too common we will have Everybody here except my son-in-law who's currently deployed in the army, but everyone else will be our five kids and and some respective partners.
00:05:04
Speaker
So super, super awesome. And then people will disperse to other places at various points and things and just a day of coming and going, which is perfect.
00:05:15
Speaker
Yes, that's so Yes, super excited about it. um And then Kate's already done um an amazing job, as she does, and has arranged our Christmas lunch. It's all in the fridge and ready. and Oh, my gosh. Wonderful things will happen with that. Way to go, Kate.
00:05:35
Speaker
Yeah, she is on top of things, as always. But I'm contemplating, must tell you, getting a getting the Santa suit out this evening and going for a bike ride around the round our neighborhood dress as Santa.
00:05:53
Speaker
As you could. Just to spread a little joy. By the time this comes out, I will have either done it or not. But i think I might do that this evening. Good. hope so.
00:06:05
Speaker
Spread little joy on Christmas Eve, I think. But let's see. Kate has lunch prepared for tomorrow. It's quite the spread. but I don't know if there's jam.
00:06:16
Speaker
There may be

Friends Trivia and Plot Discussion

00:06:17
Speaker
jam. There may not be jam. I don't know. But we do know in this episode, the one with the jam, there is jam aplenty. Yeah, there So excited about this episode. But as always, let's have a little with bamboozled here. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. I have nine questions. One is ridiculously easy, but I have nine questions going into this week's Bamboozled.
00:06:42
Speaker
Okay, I only have seven. All right. first All right. Well, going to just... I wrote one and then thought this is far too easy, but it's on the list. What is the stalker's name? that Malcolm. It is Malcolm. My dad's name, incidentally. There you go, Dr. Green. Yes, yes, old Dr. Green. The other one, the only one currently, but hopefully not for much longer.
00:07:07
Speaker
Yes, yes, was going to say, is the OG. The OG, Dr. G, that's it.
00:07:15
Speaker
All right, what did Janice injure in the spinning off the bed move? now
00:07:25
Speaker
it It was a hand or a wrist, so I'm going to go with a wrist. I need more specifics than that. Oh, hu ah her right wrist?
00:07:39
Speaker
That sounds like that was a guess, and that was rude because it was correct. Oh, yes. Nice. All right, excellent. Okay, my second one for you is what time did Monica go to the docks?
00:07:55
Speaker
4am? 4am indeed. Dang it! well Sorry, you cut out, did you say 4 or what time did you say? no I did, no. I was looking at my questions and then I said dang it. but Maybe you'll forget.
00:08:13
Speaker
There's a chance. Where does Monica go 4am?
00:08:19
Speaker
yeah there go okay What kind of jam was the last kind that Monica made for Joey? Oh, that's a good question.
00:08:32
Speaker
I do have a question. i thought about the types of jam that we see. um um a complete get Blackberry. Blackberry. It was Blackberry. Wow. You pretend like you are guessing. That that was a legitimate. well i need it and own that you know these I knew that she made Blackberry, but i did not know what order. And then honestly am not sure. I really don't know what type the other ones are.
00:09:05
Speaker
But we'll get to that. We'll get to the kind. Because there's one that's a strange color. And I have questions. about that. Alright, let's see. Why don't Chandler and Joey have Jam at their place?
00:09:22
Speaker
i don't Joey says to Chandler, why do we have Jam at our place? And Chandler says, the kids need shoes. The kids need new shoes. That's right. the
00:09:37
Speaker
All right, what have you got for me? All right, where did Joey's mom used to drop them off? Ah, that's one of my questions. That's at the movies with Jam and a Spoon.
00:09:48
Speaker
Very good, very good. i i love I love that, just the description of your Jam and a Spoon.
00:09:58
Speaker
I love it. Well, and then her answer is, You're so pretty. Yes. I've got, here's my favorite thing because there is a lady at work. She's fabulous. She is our counselor and she is amazing. But anytime that anybody says anything, that's just like,
00:10:20
Speaker
And she says this to me lot, probably. admit But she goes, you're so pretty. And it's like, oh, and I have thought in my head, I'm like, I'm pretty sure that's a friend's reference.
00:10:34
Speaker
And there it is. There it is. In this episode, I was like, it is. And so I'm like, I wonder if she knows why she says that. Like, if that's what it is. Right. but Something she's been saying for so long.
00:10:50
Speaker
She just says it. well the Well, a little tip of the hat to your wonderful counsellor up there. um Yeah, I'm not sure if it's somewhere else too, if it's set in another show, maybe a movie or something, I don't know, but to me, yeah, that's a Rachel line.
00:11:07
Speaker
Yeah. yeah Yeah, definitely is. Well, my next question for you is, it's on me, isn't is it? Yes, because you just said.
00:11:18
Speaker
No, no, it's you. It's you. You're right. You. Right? Because didn't you just ask me about? I did. About wearing the new shoes. The new shoes. but we' are weird you know yeah Okay, whatever. We're good.
00:11:34
Speaker
Cool conversation. All right, so where did Phoebe follow Malcolm and discover he was still stalking Ursula? That touches on one of my questions. Well, that would be the subway station that is Union union Square slash 14th Street subway station.
00:11:53
Speaker
Yes, nice. Yes. good right what does What did Phoebe think she was in junior high school? Oh, a witch. A witch indeed. an average student.
00:12:08
Speaker
Right. All right. What you got? What color was the trash can that Phoebe found her half-eaten sandwich in?
00:12:23
Speaker
I don't know, but I feel like it's been a few weeks since we've had a good colour question. So this is good. we need we were due one. I'm going to go with the colour of my trash can, which is green.
00:12:36
Speaker
o branch Orange it is bright orange and it's like crosshair where yeah It's only it's not it's metal obviously, but you know it's I don't know. What's that called where it's got like all the little diamonds it's chain link.
00:12:54
Speaker
Oh, maybe that's it hard Yeah, I know what you're talking about and I'm not sure yeah, but it's orange. Yeah, must have a

Movie Theater Nostalgia

00:13:02
Speaker
name. All right, couple left.
00:13:06
Speaker
How much would Monica have to charge to break even on her jam? $17. You knew immediately that's quite a lot, especially in the 90s for a thing of jam. Right.
00:13:19
Speaker
I'll tell you, that is a lot. I did pay $8. Oh, I did pay $8 for the last jar of jam that I had purchased. And isn't that strange that I know that? Yes. Yes.
00:13:34
Speaker
But I bought it on the square in Pilot Point at um um a little general store that had since. I'm not sure if they've closed, but I know that they are closing. and But it was strawberry rhubarb jam.
00:13:50
Speaker
Very Oh, my God. So good. Good stuff, huh? General store. Yes. Oh, I feel sad now. Right. that's a Maybe they would be open if they talked.
00:14:01
Speaker
Maybe, maybe, Monica's Gem, $17. All right. So what did Malcolm call himself when he realized he'd been stalking the wrong person?
00:14:16
Speaker
All right. I do think I know this one, and I hope I'm right because Kate was watching it with me and and turned her head around quickly because we had talked about this one a day or two ago.
00:14:28
Speaker
If I'm right, did he call himself a doofus? Dingus! Dingus! That was a dingus! Dingus! Because Kate had brought that up a day or two to ago, coincidentally saying, you know what word you don't hear much anymore?
00:14:42
Speaker
People call themselves a dingus. People using that word. Right! Well, and that was like butt munch. I was so excited about butt munch. Right. Right.
00:14:54
Speaker
A butt munch, you know, like that one, gotta be careful. Like, but a dingus? A dingus is safe. That's a safe insult. Yeah.
00:15:05
Speaker
Dingus. It makes me think of like Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Like that's the kind of word that would get used in something like that. was it Excellent.
00:15:15
Speaker
Excellent. I haven't seen those films in a while. That might be the first one at least. You might need to watch that again. let's see what will Back on track, what questions do I have for you?
00:15:27
Speaker
Chandler's bed sheets are predominantly what color?
00:15:33
Speaker
Oh. See, I had to go with a color question, too. Oh, my. want
00:15:42
Speaker
i want to say blue, but I feel like that's wrong. Well, if you want to say it, I would say it hey blue Blue is correct. Yes.
00:15:53
Speaker
Trust your gut, Wilson. That's awesome. All right. So I added in another question because my ah my last question is where did Monica get her fruit for the jam?
00:16:06
Speaker
a So, you know, that's the jam and all that. So then here's a number question. Are you ready? Yes. What number is the sperm donor that Monica grows with?
00:16:21
Speaker
Now, I've got to tell you, my last question, what number is the sperm donor that Monica originally selects? So I'm assuming that these are two different numbers, but they I think they're two different numbers.
00:16:36
Speaker
They are. Yes. They're super important. got the whole that Yes. Going through, and then I'm referring to the one that she actually ends up choosing whenever she has her conversation with Joe.
00:16:49
Speaker
So I am pretty sure I've got it written down in my notes, but I'm not going to look because that feels a bit unfair. I do not remember it at all. Okay. It is 37135.
00:17:03
Speaker
Very nice. I would not have got there. Would you happen to know the number of the ones she originally selected? No, but I'm pretty sure it started with one. It started with zero. Zero, three, eight, one, five.
00:17:18
Speaker
Well, it had a one in You did, you did, indeed. So you're halfway there, basically. Or sixth of the way.
00:17:29
Speaker
Yeah, there you go. There we go. Yeah, I am out too, so we'll get stuck into this. When we start off with a scene that had to be improvised,

Guest Appearances and Relationships

00:17:38
Speaker
um The opening scene of Joey jumping on the bed and falling off because of what happened in the last episode where he, does he actually dislocate his shoulder? Is that what happened? forget quite what happens yet in the last episode. They had to write something in to make it you know believable or you know why he was suddenly in a sling with his arm. Yeah, yeah.
00:18:01
Speaker
And Joey had a whole story worked out for the Doctor that it just fell out. Chandler sold him out. Yeah, that story's not going to last.
00:18:13
Speaker
I believe that it just fell out of the stuff. Right. So Chandler, I do love it when Chandler, he's like a brother to Joey, but he's like the responsible older brother. you know He's taking him to the Doctor. Yes. Getting him sorted out.
00:18:31
Speaker
He is his his emergency contact. That's right. That's right. We do know that. But Monica's making Jem to get over Richard. So she's making a lot of Jem.
00:18:45
Speaker
Jem is clearly the opposite of man. That's right. forgot about that line. and I don't know why, but like I fixated on that line. Because I'm like, how how is that the opposite? Right.
00:19:01
Speaker
I would have been like, ma'am, and then you like focus on, i don't know. like how is jam the opposite of me? This is the educator in you. It's like, that's not. No, it's not. and yeah doesn't even It doesn't rhyme.
00:19:19
Speaker
like There's nothing in there. Right. Because she's rhyming. I need a plan to get over my man. What's the opposite? Jam. Right. No, it's not.
00:19:31
Speaker
You're unhinged. That is not, I can't even follow the the line. Right. So yeah, I thought way too much about that. Right.
00:19:45
Speaker
yeah no it's a I agree with you. It was not... In no way can you justify that being the opposite. But she is making jam and jam aplenty. Joey tries some, but it's a I don't think he... He he underestimated the the heat that was coming off and ends up spitting it back into the big pot that's making the jam.
00:20:09
Speaker
Yeah. But one of the gems on the table, this really bugged me, was green, like salsa, almost.
00:20:18
Speaker
What gem would be green?
00:20:21
Speaker
Could it be... What if you took, because she's got like lemons. Right. With like blueberries and lemons.
00:20:34
Speaker
Okay. I like where you're going with this. Because you know she's got blackberries. Because she makes blackberry jam. You see the lemons.
00:20:45
Speaker
And so if you put like the blue and the yellow together, could make green. There you go. Again, that's the the kindergarten teacher in you.
00:20:56
Speaker
There you go. Mix those primary colors. mix those primary colors That's right. That's right. i love it. could also be fourth grade thinking about Indians and painting and the fruits that they would use. c See?
00:21:13
Speaker
The elementary elementary education at its best. she's coming It's coming through strong today. i like it. i like it. um Joey decides that's going to be his batch when he spits the jam back in.
00:21:29
Speaker
um ah but We will get into Joey's love for jam. We will see throughout this episode. um but We go to the street and Phoebe is walking along. Turns out she has a stalker.
00:21:43
Speaker
um and He's following her for quite some time Yeah, or Malcolm. Now, do you know who Malcolm is, the actor? and The Friends Connection here? I do.
00:21:55
Speaker
I do. Because isn't that Arquette? It is. Who was married to Courtney Cox for a long time and sadly no more. But, um yeah. ah Okay, now hang on.
00:22:11
Speaker
Because they worked together on screen. And that's like, and and supposedly that was whenever they like really, you know, fell in love and all of that.
00:22:23
Speaker
And then if you remember, like they do the whole thing where the opening, they give them all. Yes. Okay. So are they dating at this point?
00:22:34
Speaker
You know, I don't know. I don't know the timeframe of when they got married to even. And I just know they were married for a while. We haven't seen that opening yet where they change it. So they are not married yet.
00:22:48
Speaker
Right. Okay, well, this will just take a quick little Google search. so A quick search to see you when they get married. Oh, no, it's actually not even when.
00:23:00
Speaker
Ah. I'm Googling. I want to know is when did David Arquette and Courtney Cox start dating? Right, and I recognized him, but i wasn't 100% sure that was him. I don't really know him.
00:23:18
Speaker
Oh. Okay, they started dating in 1996 on the set of the first Scream movie. Okay, but this episode, it came out in 1996. Okay. So I bet you at this point they are dating...
00:23:35
Speaker
Man. Okay. So my favorite, my favorite scary movie is, is screen. Right. Every year i get to answer that and it's, you know, it's, it's becoming popular again. So now it's not such a basic answer. But I i loved seeing that movie in the theater. Right. Because it's so scary and twisty and turny and shocking. And it was like the first of its kind, right? And so whenever they started dating, because their characters, like Dewey and then Weathers,
00:24:13
Speaker
you know you're like yeah like they that's that's good because you really like david arquette's character like in the movie right okay ah yeah because he's just he's just a small town cop he's just a good guy you know and um i i don't know i i just i like that couple that david arquette courtney potts couple And so that's kind of fun to me because I bet you that's why he was on Friends for this episode is because.
00:24:47
Speaker
It's because of their relationship. They're dating. yeah Very interesting. Yeah, I didn't i didn't know that at all. I like i just knew he's an actor and the name, but really didn't know much about him.
00:25:00
Speaker
Yeah, oh he's weird. Like he's he's a weird dude dude. There's a lot of weird things, but you like him. Right. and help And then his character in the screen movies, you can't help. he' you know, we were talking off the air about Steve on Stranger Things. and Yes. We start off not liking him, but like right now, like next time we record, if Steve has not made it, I'm going to be a wreck.
00:25:29
Speaker
David Arquette's character in Screams, in the Scream movies, is like that. Like where you worry about him. Right. If make it, I'm gonna be sad.
00:25:40
Speaker
Right. Anyway, sorry. No! you Malcolm is a dingus. He is indeed a self-described, a very apt name, a dingus.
00:25:52
Speaker
Do you remember what Malcolm does for a living? It ages this episode beautifully because he sells car phones and pagers. Yeah, beepers. Yeah, beepers. Cellular phones. Cellular phones. I love it. um um Which I suppose, I mean, people still do now. Less on the beepers.
00:26:16
Speaker
buts um But, yeah, this was PBS. People still sell them. Yeah. um Is Phoebe too forgiving here and ends up going for a good one?
00:26:30
Speaker
Yeah. You don't give this time this guy the time of day at all. I don't think he's he's he's a creepy guy. He is a creepy guy. But
00:26:42
Speaker
it's a wonder she does not get more taken advantage of with her, you know, she's a very caring spirit and understanding and all the things. But like, no, it doesn't matter if you think he's cute. Yeah, and I'm right there with you because she seems like she could be taken advantage of a lot because she's so sweet and kind and forgiving.
00:27:05
Speaker
Yet she has these street smarts You know, she she she lived in a burnt-out Buick LeSabre and mugs people and all sorts of things.
00:27:15
Speaker
That is true. And yet... Buick LeSabre. Right. i think that was I think that was the model of car they talked about. Yeah, but it's weird that she... Yeah, she just s thinks this guy saw it.
00:27:31
Speaker
yeah Yeah, she's all for it and yeah She talks talks to him and ends up They end up going for coffee um We go back up to the girls' apartment and Ross and Rachel, they're alone and things look like they might start to get A little amorous, but Chandler walks in And Janice is upset um Because he made the fatal mistake of looking at her When she asked if she looked fat or not Mm-mm-mm-mm.
00:27:59
Speaker
Yeah. Rude. Rude. rude. um i think I think Ross does offer some pretty good advice. Yes. In this, you know, this is one of the few times where we'll be sort of on Team Ross for a little bit.
00:28:14
Speaker
um Yeah, you don't look with these kinds of questions. um You should just know the answer. But then, okay, and then we start getting into the...
00:28:28
Speaker
ah what I don't like, right, is the secret options with the whole scenario. Oh, of the airport. Yes. And, um you know, it's like, oh, no, wrong. Now you're single.
00:28:45
Speaker
Right. And he says, you know, because he's talking about how no the answer was actually secret option number three. Yes. And, you know, you you meet her at the gate.
00:28:58
Speaker
Which is very nice. And yes, that's wonderful. But I don't know. but Yeah, don't trick people like that. Right. fact that that's just the answer makes me think that, you know, he'd be a difficult person maintain a with.

Jam and Childhood Memories

00:29:22
Speaker
I agree. And secret option number three, you can't do it anymore. You can't meet people at the gate.
00:29:27
Speaker
Nope. So again, dates the episode a little bit. i picked Kate up and they came to my mom at the airport the other day. Yeah, you're barely in the airport where you can meet them. That's true.
00:29:39
Speaker
yeah Yeah, and even that was, they they came in on an international flight, so I couldn't even get to the baggage claim. You had to be outside the the doors. Yeah, so it's, it is what it is. how Times have changed.
00:29:54
Speaker
um But this is a Ross kind that tells channel of Chandler the technique, the hug and roll, where I'm yeah Yes, this is a tried and too true technique in Ross and Rachel's world apparently.
00:30:08
Speaker
um But it shows him this technique with the pillow. um the think I think it gets a little iconic for me, this scene where he just kind of rolls over and gets uncomfortably close to Chandler when he's demonstrating.
00:30:25
Speaker
Right. but um I think we do now, we come kind of through to one of my favourite scenes where yeah we talked about this, um was this I can't remember if this was on the air or off, um where Joey's just sitting he's eating the gem um in Central Park and he's just so happy. There's something so innocent about him just...
00:30:50
Speaker
Just taking him back where he's dropped off at the movies. The spoon. a question. it's such a joyy thing okay but i have a question yes whenever you were growing up okay this is a stupid question but it just stay with me oh i'm i'm here movie theaters was this a thing that y'all would do like whenever you were a teenager or whenever you were younger like you would go to the movies with your friends yes um
00:31:28
Speaker
Yeah, i mean, certainly. Yeah, absolutely. I i don't think i didn't go that much, but yes, definitely. See, I did movies a lot.
00:31:39
Speaker
Right. I loved going to the movies. And um shopping malls and things like that. Not really. Those have now become more of a thing. When I was a teenager, really... I say it wasn't the first one, but the first one, in my mind, is a big purpose-built shopping centre was built. Okay.
00:32:01
Speaker
Did it have a movie theatre and a food court and all the things? um I think it has a food court. It doesn't have a movie theatre. There's one nearby, but there's not one there's not one there.
00:32:15
Speaker
Yeah. See, because that was like the thing, like you would on Saturday or during the summers or whatever, would go, your parents would drop you off at the, you'd walk around, you'd shop, you'd hang around and, know, do all the things, go see a movie.
00:32:32
Speaker
And then there was the dollar movie. But then you had to like plan it because there was nowhere else to go. like just There was the movie theater. right never All the movies were a dollar, and that was awesome. I love it. We actually went to the movies two nights ago, the first time in a while.
00:32:51
Speaker
um the the The cinema nearest near us had a mystery movie night. It was $6 for a ticket. I know you all went.
00:33:01
Speaker
On a Tuesday. right That's right. oh that's and yeah you I'm sure somebody posted on Facebook about it. um But yeah, we went with our mutual friends, Len and CB, and we didn't we just knew it was going to be an R-rated movie, a horror movie, and that was it. That was It was called We Buried the Dead or We Buried the Bodies. We Buried the Dead, I think. And it comes out soon, i think in January. Oh, wow. That's awesome. Yeah. It was like a before it's even. Yes. Yeah. It's a pre-release. It's one that you get to see it before other people kind of thing.
00:33:44
Speaker
and Terrible movie. Horrible. Okay. Did you they have you fill out, like, a questionnaire or anything like that? or No, but actually that's... It would seem reasonable that they might do that as part of the deal.
00:34:01
Speaker
Please fill out this questionnaire afterwards. It just wasn't for me. and and And I can safely say all four members of our party felt the same. yeah But at least it was good time. right oh I mean, that almost made it more fun because we're looking each other up and down the aisle going, this for real? Like, is this as odd as we think it is?
00:34:25
Speaker
um So, yeah, it was very, very funny. um well So, yeah, wouldn' wouldn't recommend it, but if anyone else sees it, apparently some people love it. Kate looked up reviews afterwards, and some people think it's...
00:34:38
Speaker
Great film. I just... And I struggle struggle to get into horror movies. Like, Kate gets fully immersed. Like, she... i'm I'm envious, because she will sit there and she is absorbing the movie.
00:34:52
Speaker
And I'm sitting there trying to remain focused and not fall asleep and things... And so I don't really get scared, not because or I don't get scared by the movies, but because I'm not like invested like she

Monica's Personal Decisions

00:35:04
Speaker
gets.
00:35:04
Speaker
And I think I would get of the movie experience if I could adopt her attitude and her, you know, just she loves the movies.
00:35:15
Speaker
That's awesome. That is awesome. Well, and every so often that movie theater does does that, like where it's a mystery movie. You don't know what it is.
00:35:28
Speaker
And I have always wanted to go. but like Joseph, that's not his his jam. He's like, I can't spend money and not know that I'm going to enjoy the next two hours of my life. Well, I'll tell you now, Kate and Lana have committed to doing this basically every time it happens. Oh, okay. They need to.
00:35:51
Speaker
ah Holla. Okay, I will send them a group text. Yes. Like the quality of the movie doesn't matter. It's the movie experience. Kate loves the popcorn and the light stemming you know, she's into it. And whenever at the very first
00:36:14
Speaker
All right, so yes. Al, if I forget, because, you know, chances are I probably will, and then I will randomly remember on a random 2 a.m. Right.
00:36:29
Speaker
Yes, but if, yes, so please help me remember. I will help you remember. I'm on it. Okay, okay, thank you. Okay, wow, where are we?
00:36:41
Speaker
I'm not sure how we got into movie theaters. You were asking me if I went to... Oh, it's because Joey... yeah we got there It's Joey with this movie. Yes. movie with the jar jam Now, in the background of this this scene, I need to go back and confront this. I had a little look at IMDb.
00:36:59
Speaker
Phoebe, Lisa Kudrow's sister, is one of the the waitresses in the background. oh She plays, you know, she's in Friends now and again when we see, like, the back of Ursula talking to Phoebe or vice versa. She plays the body double of Phoebe and Ursula. But apparently she is actually walking the behind the counter in Central Park.
00:37:22
Speaker
Oh. That's neat. That's Yes, so i want to go and look at that. But Phoebe comes in and she explains about Malcolm the Stark and basically reveals she has a crush on him.
00:37:33
Speaker
um Yeah, not good. Not good, Phoebe. um But Monica comes in and she has, as this is, she has gem for Joey. She's just keeping him stocked up.
00:37:48
Speaker
Yeah. And I think, oh, that's right. was trying to remember. I wrote down Xerox place because once again, all from the Xerox place comes up casually conversation with which which hand would Joey rather have?
00:38:06
Speaker
Hands together. Hands together, true Joey fashion. He's come up with a great idea of mashing the hands together. But this is where Monica's come up with a ah brilliant new plan because Jem is not sustainable.
00:38:19
Speaker
But having a baby is. It's going to solve her problems, apparently. Well, and the thing is, okay, okay.
00:38:32
Speaker
do i I don't know that she really thinks that it's going to solve her problems. this This, I can logically follow. Okay. Like the jam thing, i could not.
00:38:44
Speaker
I could not really, you know. But like this, I could see her logic where she said if if she thinks about what what is her number one priority, like what what is it that she wants out alive that's not jammed,
00:39:02
Speaker
It's babies. That's the whole reason that her and Richard had to let it go. And so i'm like, oh yeah. But then you kind of, and I get that. i get like being so laser focused on something that you you forget to consider everything else around right that decision.
00:39:27
Speaker
you know Yes. Yes. Suddenly that becomes the only thing. Yes, but yeah, like her logic there, and then it's like it took me 28 years to find somebody that I was willing to spend my life with and raise babies with and everything else.
00:39:44
Speaker
If it takes another 28 years, like then I'm 56 and that's ridiculous. Right. And it's like, well, okay, but I get what she's saying.
00:39:56
Speaker
I get it. Yeah. know And I just, I feel bad. She makes me sad. She makes me sad. Yeah. She's got this gaping hole in her life.
00:40:08
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. that And it wasn't, and their breakup wasn't some big, terrible dumpster fire. Right. wasn't something that you could just be like, thank God that's over. Right.
00:40:22
Speaker
Right. And um I watched, okay, so I watched like the commentary of the the one where no one's ready. And they talked about Tom Selleck for a little while. And that the original plan was not for him to turn into the reoccurring, like the big deal that he get turned into because it was just so good.
00:40:50
Speaker
They were not prepared for that. Um, but, I, I forgot what I was saying. Right.
00:41:01
Speaker
I don't know. But I, I just, I, it's just sad. Like ah having a nice, healthy breakup of whatever that must be like, I don't know. Right. I don't know.
00:41:15
Speaker
But, um, that i just feel bad for monica yeah she's she's got uh yeah yeah a hole in her life she's trying to fill and she knows it's it's uh the baby is really truly what she wants um the man so now she needs the baby That's right. Yeah, the magic in that's not great. It's not airtight. It's not. But it's... Well, Kenneth, she'll see that, I think, in the end.
00:41:48
Speaker
um We kind of cut very briefly over to Chandler's bedroom where he tries this hug and roll technique. And we get to hear his... Yes. ah Everything that's happening inside of Chandler's head.
00:42:02
Speaker
Yes. So happy. Yeah, it's a complicated place in the best of times and Chandler tries but manly does he he truly does fling her off the bed.
00:42:13
Speaker
um Yeah, like his he mean his his arm was flying in there. There was nothing subtle about that movement at all. It was only going to end one way and that was with Janice on the floor.
00:42:26
Speaker
um Yeah. um Now, possibly the creepiest bit of the show, we get we cut back over to... say Malcolm's got all kinds of tools of the trade for being a... Being a stalker wasn't just an impulsive decision here. He went shopping.
00:42:45
Speaker
Yeah, he did. Yeah, what do we have? He had binoculars, night vision goggles, a book, his logs... The logs are what really creep me out. There's coats in there and it's thick and all that. Yeah, this wasn't just a poor impulse decision to follow somebody, which would be bad enough.
00:43:07
Speaker
But there were purchases made and probably some research done. And, uh... Yeah, not good not good. Phoebe, you need to steer clear. Steer clear of this guy.
00:43:20
Speaker
Um... I was just thinking that he... he This isn't the same actor in... I know which one is. Huh?
00:43:32
Speaker
hello The one that I'm thinking of who Ursula almost marries. I have the teacher. Yeah, is it's not the same actor, is it? No, because that's Sean Penn.
00:43:43
Speaker
That, of course it is. Yeah, but they look alike. They do. And they have the same haircut. maybe that's it that's why they they seem familiar yeah but they're and they've got the same build and that same kind of look right just kind of geeky and and awkward but not right it's a look i'm telling you right um um Yeah, he does read Phoebe the Ex-Art, about basically saying how nice she is.
00:44:16
Speaker
Again, it doesn't come across as nice to me. It's just, it's levels of creepiness. but um But Phoebe seems to think it's sweet and endearing. No. and Yeah.
00:44:29
Speaker
Phoebe's just trying to make it happen. She is. She's really going for this. and No, no need. Yeah. Speaking of making things happen Monica has indeed Chosen a sperm donor Everyone tries to tell her she's crazy um But then she finds out that Joey Is actually one of the potential candidates Which is a great great moment um Yeah the next rule And I love that Joey hasn't really clocked it I don't think until After that moment he wasn't really paying attention
00:45:07
Speaker
Okay, and but right before that, it's where she makes the comment, and it's like, ah whenever she's talking about how Ross has been, and the way that Ben looks at Ross, and it makes her ache.
00:45:23
Speaker
Yes. And I'm like, oh, oh, you know. Yeah, pulls at the heartstrings, doesn't it?
00:45:34
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. New York next rule. Yeah, that's... He's just, you know, face full of gem. Couldn't be happier. Could Joey.
00:45:45
Speaker
it's ah But Phoebe comes in, she admits, or she tells him that she's kissed Malcolm and that he's going to give up stalking for her. But thankfully, nobody really buys this. They don't believe it.
00:45:59
Speaker
It's... a Yeah, Phoebe's not night vision goggles, but love goggles, I think, and has not really seen this situation clearly.
00:46:11
Speaker
Let's think. Sorry. Suddenly my notes cut off. um Well, wait. It made me laugh, too, whenever he's like, you know that sweater I gave you for Christmas, or for your birthday? Yes. And then he's like, that's how you paid for it? And he's like, yeah that's what i was wearing right to texas The visual of giving the used are you a sweater that's been worn, let alone, and and telling him that's where he wore it.
00:46:42
Speaker
Right. Yes, it's so funny. it's It's so funny. And then, um yeah, whenever, okay, and then Phoebe comes in, and she's talking along about...
00:46:57
Speaker
about Malcolm. hit thought it was Somebody, and it must be Chandler because it's a very Chandler-line, but whatever he says, yeah wake up and smell the restraining order. Yes, yes.
00:47:14
Speaker
It's accurate, though. It's accurate because Phoebe needs to get away from this guy. as quickly as possible. Right. And then whenever... And then Monica's like, you know, you should trust him if you really like this guy. And then Joey's like, or you could follow him. And she's like, oh yeah, no, that. Yeah. is I like that. That's a better idea.
00:47:40
Speaker
Yes, Joey's logic is excellent. It is. It's solid here. He comes up with... the It's all the gem. It's giving him... Superhuman powers. That's right. It's superfood for the brain. He's come up with a good one here. um Janice ends up telling ross or saying Rachel excuse me about Ross's spinning hug and roll. I forget what he calls it. Hug and roll thing.
00:48:05
Speaker
Hug and roll thing. um Again, I love that Janice has suddenly made an appearance um in the show. and And oddly, it's just funny to me that Joey has a dislocated shoulder in real life and on the show, and then suddenly here's Janice with a wrist thing on as well. There's some injuries happening.
00:48:25
Speaker
Yes. Mm-hmm. um Okay, and then they talked about and in the commentary episode of the one where nobody's ready or no one's ready.
00:48:40
Speaker
They talked about how whenever you get everybody all together in one place for an extended period of time. that it just that it's just ridiculous like everybody is just having a party right and so yeah and then you say that and i'm like yeah it's just everybody is hyped up right yeah it's so good sorry excuse me i still got this frog in my throat from having the cold we've both got it yep yep
00:49:10
Speaker
yeah um I do like the subway scene I like it when this you know the scene in the background to the The setting changes a bit There are 14th Street And Union Square Station And Phoebe is stalking Malcolm Who in turn is stalking Ursula As we find out because she walks by um which I guess is why Phoebe's or Lisa Kudrow's real-life sister was on the set that day, perhaps, to film that scene somehow. I'm not sure if we saw stand-in for Phoebe as Ursula walked by, I need to go back and look at that. But then she says that also she...
00:49:50
Speaker
we didn't uh because when she walked by it there wasn't like she just walked by okay like and they weren't all in the scene uh right so she must have been there for another reason i guess um but phoebe or phoebe does say this point right well i can no longer date you i can help you um Yes.
00:50:16
Speaker
they can't date you And she can't do this thing where she pretends to be Arsala, you know, walking away and walking away or something. It's very, very funny. and Behind the pillar. That's right. it's Yeah, she's really trying to help this

Episode Review and Ratings

00:50:32
Speaker
guy.
00:50:32
Speaker
um But we kind of come back. I was going to ask you in trivia what the name of the guy joey pictured Monica with.
00:50:44
Speaker
it this Hoyt. Interesting name. I tried to write it in my notes. i was like, I've got no idea how you even begin spelling Hoyt. Oh, well. H-O-Y-T.
00:50:56
Speaker
Like the cards. Like the brand of cards. that's what Ah, there you go. so That makes sense. Right or not. but but that's that That does make sense. um He kind of picky can tells Monica that what he pictured for her future with the house with the pool and the kids and the this and the that. and I think it makes Monica realize that maybe this the spam plan is not not the way forward for her um because this isn't actually going to give her the life that she is
00:51:33
Speaker
you know, maybe ultimately wanting in the end. yeah Yeah. It's so sweet. Yeah. It is. Poor old Monica.
00:51:47
Speaker
And so right now, like at the end of that scene, there was a cutscene where they're sitting there, they've had this moment and, um you know, um where he's hugging and then he's like, oh man, he's an astronaut. And then he goes back to hugging her.
00:52:07
Speaker
And while he's hugging at her, you hear this like bing, bing, bing, bing. And then they turn around and and out on the balcony is Malcolm. And he's got his binoculars.
00:52:20
Speaker
Wow. got them And he's banging. And so Monica hollers at him. it She'll be back at five he's like at five and then he like goes off and it's like stupid that's fantastic yeah I didn't see that scene um that's very very funny yeah but that that I think was the only part of mine that was cut right yeah that didn't see that bit
00:52:52
Speaker
um I just realized my notes have cut off. I think this is the last scene um where we go back to, we're still the girl's apartment and Joey has found out that nobody wants his product.
00:53:06
Speaker
Yes. Which is just very funny. He's quite put out. And then he's got the jam all over his face. He is covered. He is covered. And again, the way he sort of thinks, because I think it's Rachel Wright says, you've got something on your face, and he just kind of dabs the corner of his mouth just a tiny bit.
00:53:27
Speaker
Yes. Thinking that that's it. That's all he's got. um But I think Ross ross comes in Does he kind of look at Joey, sees all the jam in his face and just walks by him?
00:53:39
Speaker
That's just Joey. That's just Joey doing Joey things. um But I think he he hit Chandler with the magazine, right? Because he kind of got stuck. Well, Chandler's sitting there reading the magazine.
00:53:53
Speaker
And so he comes and he sits down next to him and he takes Chandler's magazine and starts kind of flipping through it while he's talking to him and then he smacks it and hits him. That's right.
00:54:05
Speaker
Yeah, because women talk. yeah Yes, and the timing of that was so funny. So funny. That's right. it's a Yeah, Chandler should have known better in selling Ross out.
00:54:20
Speaker
um I don't know. I don't know. Maybe he was just trying to defend himself to Janice a bit. But yeah yeah, you would have known that Janice would have said something to Rachel, I think, at that time.
00:54:35
Speaker
um Well, that' i think that was the last scene, wasn't it? From what I recall, that was the last scene. That was it. Well, this week, I think we have to... Well, that's first of all, Gunther Central Park of the Week.
00:54:47
Speaker
um I'd be interested to hear yours, given what you have said through this through this review. So I've, i I've gone back and forth and back and forth because like Monica, of yeah I, Monica's my top Monica. right i pay um Yeah, because the acting is good and she's unhinged. She's all over the place and she's, she's just trying to make sense a life and it's hilarious.
00:55:20
Speaker
And, um yeah, and so that's, she's mine. But then I had a very close second. And then, you know, I could have gone easily with Chandler and talk on about how him. And I could have easily gone with Phoebe and talked all about her.
00:55:40
Speaker
But I think Monica is it for me. i think Given the way you've described this episode I thought that yeah you're definitely going with Monica um I'm going in another direction slightly Just there's something about Joey's lines And the way he loves Jam And the nostalgia I just can't look past it I love that nostalgia That takes me back to his childhood um he's so He's a simple guy Simple means With simple wants and you know and
00:56:12
Speaker
And then, oh sorry. Yeah, no, no, you're good. you joey That whole part with him and Monica at the end. Right. he's it It just is another about why he is he is the but loyal friend, the good friend, that he's the best friend. He is. He is, without a doubt. um Well, this week we've been we've been brewing up a batch of jam, and we're going to talk about how many jars of jam would you give this episode, do you think?
00:56:45
Speaker
Okay, I would give this one eight and a half jams of jar. Whoa. Jams of jar. Goodness. Yes, jars of jam.
00:56:57
Speaker
I really like it. It's funny. It made me laugh. We got Janice in there. We got some logic, some skewed logic. We got unhinged people. like It's got all the things that make it great.
00:57:10
Speaker
All the ingredients, you might say, to a good jam. Oh, yes, even some green jam. Even that weird green jam. Yep, absolutely. I liked it.
00:57:22
Speaker
I didn't like as much as you. I'm coming in at 7.5. wow it's okay good you know good episode okay episode but uh with with janice and yeah you're right the scene with monica and joey the way joey loves jam and then having janice in it definitely give it you know that little the edge to me it's not a seven it's a seven and a half having um having them in it um Yeah, so solid seven and a half. Nothing wrong with that, but it's also it's not an outstanding episode for me, or a particularly great one.
00:57:57
Speaker
um And it's also, for me, it's coming off the back of last week's episode, episode which which is absolutely love. right But next week's episode, once again, is the one with the metaphorical tunnel, which means there's lots of Janice.
00:58:15
Speaker
um Okay, I don't even remember this. Ah, well, I won't spoil it for you. Okay, good. But there's there' Because i was I was looking at it and was like, metaphorical tunnel. Like, no... It refers to one of the storylines and I don't remember the other. As ah often is the case, I don't remember the other storylines, so I'm excited to to see what those are.
00:58:42
Speaker
Alright, well, awesome. Yeah, any final thoughts before we wrap this up? Yes, I think it's way better than a seven and a half jars of gin. Good for you. Good for you. Good for me. Yes. that's i I like this.
00:59:00
Speaker
And I, man, season three has started off with some really good, solid episodes. It really, really has. Just looking down the list, there's there's good ones. kind of like It's really finding its stride, I think.
00:59:17
Speaker
Yeah, that's excellent. Because, like and I've said this so many times, I always feel like my favorite seasons are like six and seven. But I don't know. Three is is a good one. It's off to a very strong start.
00:59:35
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, now I'm right there with you. Well, next week, yeah, the one with the metaphorical tunnel. But on that note, as always, everybody, thank you so much for listening to the Purple Door Podcast.
