Experiences at Harry Potter and Friends Tours

00:00:55
Speaker
Was it this morning? Yesterday? Yeah, no, today. You went to... You went into... Did you have a car? Yes. No, I went yesterday. Yesterday, that was it. was amazing. Yes. my My New Year's has started off awesome. I've got some different experiences us for us to do before going back to, you know, ah normal life. And ah one of them was to go to that Harry Potter experience. And so we went yesterday. and then whenever I was dropping off George, she the mom came out and she said, hey, I heard that you guys went and I'm trying to decide if I want to go. And was it worth it? And I gave it a glowing response. I am not shocked.
00:01:43
Speaker
ay a with It was so much fun. And I told her, I think you you just go with no expectations. Because, um you know, if you're expecting to show up at Universal, you're going to be disappointed. If you're expecting to show up with, like,
00:02:01
Speaker
um I don't even know what else you would be expecting. But, like, if you're just looking for a nice way to spend a few hours of your day with your family and just silly, like, and enjoy. great. Good. I'm glad to hear it. Yeah, it's the best when you go in with no or low expectations of something and it ends up being...
00:02:24
Speaker
Fantastic. That's so good. Yes. Yes, exactly. Yeah, that was us when we went to the Warner Brothers studio now last year um yeah yeah to do the Friends tour, but we had no idea what it would be like and it ended up just being amazing.
00:02:39
Speaker
Yeah, exactly. Just let go and try and have a great time. So good. Well, awesome. Yeah, it's a beautiful day, but where else would we rather be than be recording an episode about our favorite show? Yes, here in my 12-year-old son's room. I've shipped him off, and here I am. just But you do have a desk now. friends and you're You're set up with a desk now. You're very official.
00:03:10

Well, I feel like I was bullied just a little bit for just chilling and moving all around. so there you go. You've got it. I love it.
00:03:21
Speaker
and And I looked before I covered my face to make sure you're not staring at my forehead. You're welcome.

Feedback and Trivia Fun

00:03:29
Speaker
There we go. There we go. We've received some feedback from our new social media manager on, um yes, making sure we are front and center of the cameras and such.
00:03:39
Speaker
yes Yes. Well, sort of. yeah It was not direct advice. It was, this is hilarious and you are a train wreck. Right. let's Let's make fun of that until you fix it. yeah i Well, we wouldn't have it any other way. Absolutely not. I love it. I love her to pieces.
00:04:04
Speaker
Indeed. Oh, I just, I just shrunk everything. Uh-oh. Well, we can still hear and see you. Okay, great. We are going to be getting into the one with the flashback, which is, it's great to take a little sort of sidestep from the the storyline of the show um to have a fun special episode like this. And I think on that note, it's quite exciting. I've ended up with 13 bamboozled questions. Oh, dang. Yeah.
00:04:35
Speaker
great Go, Al. I love that for you. I have one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. I only have eight.
00:04:46
Speaker
Only have eight. All right. I will start. I'm very happy. I do want to preface this with, I was so excited about this um episode whenever we finished recording the last pod because I thought I knew which one it was. And no.
00:05:08
Speaker
Different one. Yeah. Different one. Totally different one. yeah this Yeah. An easy mistake to make. And I wasn't sure either. Yeah. Yeah.
00:05:19
Speaker
This is not the one that I was all excited about. Ah, well, I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this one. There there are a couple of problems I have with this one, but it's okay. We'll it's talk about it.

Friends' Character and Timeline Analysis

00:05:33
Speaker
All right. Well, I'm i'm quite proud of myself for my opening question cause it's a little different. Okay. So let's see how we get on. In the opening scene... Going from left to right, as we look at the screen, what order are the cast sitting?
00:05:52
Speaker
Oh, my God. From left to right. Yes. as So as we're watching the screen, if you pointed to you know your screen with your left hand. I got it. Okay.
00:06:04
Speaker
Because know over on the far right in the chair is Ross and Rachel. Indeed. Strong start. Yep. Okay. And then... Between the chair. ah Oh, can I go backwards? You do whatever way want to go. I got it Okay. All right. And then between the chair and the couch is Monica.
00:06:28
Speaker
No, I'm lying. I'm lying. I'm lying. Wait, no. Was that the beginning of the last one? whenever um ah Whenever Janice and Chandler start kissing and then they're up against Rachel. That's less that's the previous episode. the last episode, right? Yes. So I still think Monica's over here between the couch and the chair.
00:06:55
Speaker
But I didn't. I have no idea where Joey is. And then I know that chand Janice is on the left and Chandler's on the right. you're you're close You're not far away. You're kind of close. Okay. I got four of them right. right Joey is all the way to the left, sitting at the table by himself.
00:07:16
Speaker
Okay, ah as he often does. He often does. then can and Well, it's Phoebe who's between Joey and kind of the couch. Oh, all about Phoebe. Yep.
00:07:28
Speaker
And then on the couch we have Monica Chandler Janice and then you got the chair right, Ross and Rachel on the chair. So you were you were you were on the right path. It was a tricky question, but i thought it being... That is so tricky. It is. They're not all like that. Don't worry.
00:07:45
Speaker
Dang. Yes. All right. It's your question. All right. Well, my first question is just kind of, okay, who are the almost couples that were revealed in this episode?
00:08:04
Speaker
All right. So what about the couples? Okay. Who are your almost couples? Okay. Who are almost, okay. Not exactly the way that I worded it, but I worded it in a friendly way. I like it. I got it. Family friend family friendly version. and So we yeah kind of going backwards, Ross and Phoebe. Okay.
00:08:23
Speaker
Then we have, would we count Monica and Joey, even though that was very much one way. and then Rachel and Chandler in her dream you or her sort daydream at the end.
00:08:36
Speaker
Right, right. Yes. All right. a Good job. Thank you. That was easy. My second one for you, when Phoebe, or what is Phoebe snacking on when Monica tells her she left lipstick on the phone?
00:08:53
Speaker
Oh. She's eating something. Monica says, oh, I left lipstick on the phone. Oh, no, it must have been you, and leaves. Right. Right.
00:09:04
Speaker
Oh, man. Al, you made this so hard. Oh, it's ah it's a box of something. is it Is it a box of animal crackers? It is not.
00:09:17
Speaker
It is a box of Nilla Wafers. Oh, I knew that! Because she was sitting there, and I even thought, ew, I should ask Al that.
00:09:29
Speaker
did you Did you happen to notice what was on the box? There was something, ah it's kind of interesting. No. There was a sunflower sticker over part of the N. So if you look at the box and you didn't know it was Nilla Wafers, it actually says Villa Wafers.
00:09:49
Speaker
They changed the N to a V with a big sunflower sticker. All about that copyright. Yes, exactly That's great. Yes.
00:09:59
Speaker
ah It's all right. It's all Shake it off. Okay. All right. Your question for me. What's the name of the photographer that was supposed to be Chandler's new roommate?
00:10:12
Speaker
That would be Eric. Nice. Yes. All right. I haven't written that down. All right. Well, this is where you're going to start clawing back. What is the name of the person who tells Monica that the bar is closing?
00:10:28
Speaker
Chris. Chris it is. Ding, dingd ding, ding. Yes. Okay, dang. I like okay Okay. What perks came with Eric being Chandler's new roommate?
00:10:44
Speaker
There might be supermodels in the apartment. Mm-hmm. And the use of his sister's beach house.
00:10:56
Speaker
Is it a beach house? Lake House. Might be Lake House. Might be Lake House. Lake House. All right.
00:11:05
Speaker
Nice. That's a good one. All right. what i had had to double check this. I went and Googled it. What artifact from the bar ends up being a fixture in the boy's apartment?
00:11:18
Speaker
Oh, it's the Guinness poster. It is the Guinness poster. Yes. Well done. Nice. All right. What did Phoebe think the felt on the pool table actually was? She thought it was grass.
00:11:34
Speaker
I just had this image of of a lawnmower, you know, being brought in to go jump across the table. you know Done. in And that's so funny. That made me think of um miniature golf.
00:11:50
Speaker
I don't know why. But it did. It made me think of miniature golf. I could go off on a tangent. There's a podcast I listen to called Stuff You Should Know. It's been around for 10 years or more. Yes. We've talked about this. I think the last week was about miniature golf.
00:12:06
Speaker
Oh. And like how it started and all these things. I won't bore listeners or you with the story, but basically you'll have heard of St. Andrews, which is...
00:12:17
Speaker
Maybe. you know In Scotland, but it's the most famous the original, the most famous golf course in the world. people yeah golf I'm not a golfer. It is very fancy. It's so fancy that in the 1800s, women wanted to play on it, and God forbid that was not allowed. No. So they invented something called the St. Andrews Women's Putting Club.
00:12:39
Speaker
oh Because it was thought to be uncouth and undignified for women to raise clubs up above their shoulders, possibly revealing their ankles and such. How dare they? how How dare they? So a chap there decided to us to squash those dissident voices. And he built a little putting course that was just scaled down golf courses.
00:13:02
Speaker
And that was the world's first mini golf or putt-putt. Interesting. Yeah. And all sorts of weird stuff. Like they go into a lot of details about and how how it came about, but that was the origins of it.
00:13:17
Speaker
I love that. Okay. Yeah. And there's people who are super into it. There's a ah ah stretch, a highway or a road, I don't remember, in Florida that's 50 miles long that has 30 different miniature golf courses on it.
00:13:31
Speaker
So people come in from around the world who are into this stuff. And like that's like the yeah yeah their holy grail of mini golf and stuff. So whole world I knew nothing about until last week.
00:13:46
Speaker
Nice. Yeah, yeah. Didn't didn't know. um Oh, it's my question for you. Let's see. What instrument does Mr. Heckles claim he might be able to play?
00:13:59
Speaker
The clarinet. You're close. Oboe. The oboe. Oboe. Yes, well done. Okay, I feel like at some point he has said something.
00:14:10
Speaker
He does about clarinet. I think, I'm sure he does. I'm sure. Oh, yeah um when Marcel was on the loose, I think he says, you're disturbing my clarinet practice.
00:14:22
Speaker
Yes, if you don't the clarinet, I could. I could, but he could play the clarinet. That's right. All right, your question for me.
00:14:34
Speaker
Okay. Where did Susan and Carol meet?
00:14:40
Speaker
They met at... They met at the gym. Correct. And this tracks because he does say that earlier whenever we find out, you know, that they're done. Yes. But I, this all is confusing to me. But anyway, go on. we I'm looking forward to getting into that. um When Joe is moving in, he has a lot of boxes in the hallway and a pair of what?
00:15:14
Speaker
Boxing gloves. well matt Well done. I thought that might be tricky. That was said with confidence. Yeah, well, that's because they're hanging up in their apartment for a long time. Yes, yet they become a staple in there.
00:15:27
Speaker
Yes. All right, what are the two stains on the couch?
00:15:34
Speaker
One I know, one I've got no idea. Spaghetti is on the back of a cushion. And what's on the other side of that same cushion? Coffee. No. no I've got no idea. Don't remember. Spot ink.
00:15:51
Speaker
Spot of ink. Nope, I would not have got that one. All all right, for you, what does Monica say Joey should tell her landlord if you have if the landlord ever asks who lives there?
00:16:05
Speaker
Dang it! oh How old is Monica's grandma? Where does she live? She's afraid of. That would be... yep are and where does she live al i'm pretty sure she moved to florida that's right yes yes all right all right who owns the bar oh is it chris it is chris okay i feel bad i'm I don't know. That was a duplicate question, I feel. No, no, it's fine.
00:16:42
Speaker
no But still, I think I asked you about that, so maybe you should ask me the next question. yeah but I can't, because then it's who owns Monica's apartment. Oh. Oh, dear. Well, I just like knocked out all your questions. You did it in one town's swoop. That's a shame, because i've I've got six left for you.
00:17:02
Speaker
Yeah, you do. All right. Here we go. You're about to go on a roll. All right. Complete the Phoebe sentence. I need to live in a place. Where I'm free to spill.
00:17:15
Speaker
Yes. Where people can spill. That is it. and All right. Had to throw in a color question. What color is Joey's beer cooler that he has beside the couch?
00:17:27
Speaker
Oh, dang. Is it red? It is red. Nice. Look, here you go. Two for two in this extra little round here. um When Ross goes to the bar and tells Phoebe his marriage is over, he puts shot glasses on the bar. How many glasses?
00:17:44
Speaker
Oh, my God. i ha
00:17:50
Speaker
Is it three? is nuwell It's it's three in each hand. It's six total. Wow. Dang. Which i choose to believe is symbolic of them eventually becoming six because at this point, Rachel's not in the group and Joey hasn't met Joey yet.
00:18:08
Speaker
Right. So I choose to believe that there's something in that. Yeah, they're going to become six. um How long were Ross and Carol together?
00:18:19
Speaker
ah Seven years. Seven years indeed. All right, we have, you know, um I've got two more, but one of them is not fair. It's a terrible question. It's okay. You're going to ask it anyway. I'm going to ask it right now for you.
00:18:33
Speaker
Okay. All right, when Rachel walks into the bar and hits the jukebox, do you know the song or the band of the song that's playing? if I didn't know. I had to Google it.
00:18:43
Speaker
Wow. No, I

Roommate Woes and Personal Anecdotes

00:18:45
Speaker
don't. No, it's a song called Time of the Season by the Zombies. It's not no nots a no fair question. That's crazy, Al. Yeah.
00:18:56
Speaker
All right. Why does Chandler have to end his hug with Monica?
00:19:06
Speaker
He says he has to go. I know. Yeah. Because um the the lifeguards are about to disarm a nuclear weapon. See, you ended on a strong note.
00:19:20
Speaker
Nice. at you. Well done. I was going to make them have surgery, and I knew that that was wrong. love it. That's correct. That's awesome. Yeah. i love it correct that's awesome it's It is. All right. Let's get stuck into this, this flashback episode. I love it. Janice. Janice gets the ball rolling here. Yeah. Cause in chaos.
00:19:50
Speaker
um and it It made me laugh so hard. oh the Oh, it sounds like a dirty math problem. Yes. And I do love that they're kind of like, you know, she will keep this family friendly. She asked the blunt question and everyone kind of says no. But then she says, right, who kind of almost? And everyone starts scattering. Yes, finding all the other things to do all the, yeah.
00:20:19
Speaker
Yeah. Like anything random. random Anything but sit there seems to be the thing. um So we we really start this episode off, it's three years earlier um in the girls' at what it's the girls's apartment, but it's really Monica and Phoebe's, kind of just Monica's at this point, because we'll find out Phoebe's already moved out. um I love this little throwback, sort of throwback to ugly naked guy.
00:20:46
Speaker
and that he's cute naked guy back then. He's putting on some weight, this cute naked guy. um yeah i love that he had a previous life before being ugly naked guy.
00:20:58
Speaker
and find it interesting he's always naked guy, though. He's always naked. and And part of me was like, hold on. He could still be a cute naked guy even if he's put on a little weight. Putting on a little weight.
00:21:11
Speaker
He was still cute even though he had put on a little weight. Exactly. That doesn't make him ugly. So that was my only... I'm coming to the defense of ugly naked guy there. Ugly naked guy. Monica has... ah Sorry, Phoebe has moved out but she hasn't told Monica but... We found out later she did it to really save their friendship.
00:21:31
Speaker
um I love that Chandler comes in with this goatee. um Yes. Looking a bit different. He's having no luck finding a roommate. I didn't write this down. Was his previous roommate Kip?
00:21:45
Speaker
And I don't remember why he moved out. Oh. I feel like we find out at some point, um like he was getting married or something. And it wasn't, and I know that like, yeah, and that we're always to be friends and then Kip like fell off the planet. Yes, that's what Kip said. Something like that. There's a cut, a little cut scene in here where Phoebe is actually trying to get Ross to sneak things out of the apartment for her. Right. Because he's taking things out nightly.
00:22:19
Speaker
Nice. Sneaking stuff out. And so she's like, you know, tonight's bad or my purse is a little bulky tonight. So she tries to get him to take a clock radio and some dirt. Yes.
00:22:32
Speaker
And it's okay. I love, add some dirt. Yes. And, and some dirt. so I think she said like sanitary dirt or something like that. And I was like, what, what, what is that?
00:22:47
Speaker
Yeah. What is that? What is sanitary dirt? I have no idea. I love it. I don't know if that was right or not, but I thought it was. Yeah. Sounds good. I love it. I like an hourly cut that you have that I don't.
00:23:01
Speaker
Um, Monica ends up coming back in because she had left, I think. But Ross has to leave. But he talks about Carol. You know she doesn't have a group of friends, but, you know, she's now met a lady called Susan at the gym and they seem to have hit it off.
00:23:18
Speaker
um Yeah. It's the beginning of the end for poor Ross and Carol at this point. Okay. ah So let me ask you this question. Yes. Okay. At the very beginning of the series, and he's like, you know, they're getting divorced because she's a lesbian. And, you know, and then he talked about like how they all three spent some time together.
00:23:48
Speaker
Right? That's right. Yes. And so where does this flashback fit into that timeline? That's a very good observation.
00:24:00
Speaker
Because I, you know, ah going back to the Carol is the true villain of this entire story and all of that, um he's pushing her to like spend time and hang out with Susan But then he also, at the end of the episode, brings up that his wife is a lesbian. and you so That's like the bookends of the original story. You're right. Right.
00:24:34
Speaker
But, like, it doesn't make sense where that Joey's entering right now.
00:24:43
Speaker
You know what mean? Yeah, yeah. It doesn't, it doesn't, it's it's not right. it does It doesn't line up with the original story. You're at there you're absolutely right. Yeah. I i didn't catch that. easy right No, you're not. I didn't catch it, but you're right. Okay. We do hear about the three of them kind of hanging out together. Right. Yeah. And then Susan and and Carol were close and they were friends and then they decided you know that they should all hang out together. Yeah. And then Ross felt left out.
00:25:24
Speaker
Right. Yes. that So it doesn't... It doesn't quite add up. You're absolutely right. We should write a letter to somebody about that. does somebody. Somebody. Somebody. We'll write it to Hayley. Hayley. Hayley. She'll make a TikTok about it and get it sorted.
00:25:45
Speaker
Hayley will fix that for us. okay That's what she does. um In the boys' apartment, Chandler is interviewing new roommates. Eric comes in Chandler likes him a lot. um I kind of like the way he hugs him.
00:25:59
Speaker
like he he yeah He's his's almost overwhelmed with with this newfound friendship. um Yes. we'll We'll keep this family friendly. I do love Chandler's line about, well, unless the person I'm interviewing is your sister.
00:26:12
Speaker
you know, then he's pretty sure Eric has got the job or got the job, got the um the room in the apartment. Which is funny. Yeah. um yeah they and they Chandler leaps around the room. god they Sorry, go ahead. Go ahead. Sorry. what also makes me think like Chandler. ah Right. You're better than that Chandler.
00:26:37
Speaker
And that's okay. He knows who he is. He is. He does. I love the way he shows Joey around the apartment, like leaping around, you know, bedroom, bedroom, bedroom.
00:26:50
Speaker
All right. Goodbye. Basically. Well, okay, Jerry. Goodbye. Yes, that's right. that's not even jerry Right. um he says the gay thing like yeah and it funny It's not the first time I think that's come up. um It's so funny. Joey putting his foot in it straight away.
00:27:13
Speaker
um Joey sees Monica in the hallway when he's leaving. They have a ah brief moment, um just kind of gazing it into each other's eyes for a second, I suppose.
00:27:25
Speaker
Mm-hmm. But then we go back we go down to the bar. I can only imagine the work it would have taken to redress the coffee shop into a bar. um Chandler goes in, tells ah or Monica tells him that the bar's closing down.
00:27:41
Speaker
um and this is where we we meet Rachel for the first time in the flashbacks. He's sitting over in the corner with two friends. think we mentioned this last week. One is the twin sister of...
00:27:53
Speaker
um The actor who plays Fright Jr. Yes. Yes. So she's sitting there. on Which one is it? Is it the one with the red hair? It's the very curly hair. think it's red, isn't it?
00:28:06
Speaker
Yeah. and it's up yeah very earlyly yeah Yes. Very Yes. Very curly hair.
00:28:13
Speaker
Rachel's having, i mean, she's not getting married for another year or so, but she's starting to get cold feet. Yes. Okay, but hold on. Yep. Hold on. Okay, I feel like you you kind of skipped over the part that made that kind of foreshadows and makes me laugh whenever he's like, okay, I found my roommate. And Monica's like, which one? The Italian guy? that's Because I want to be known as the funny one.
00:28:41
Speaker
And that's totally what happens. That's right. Yes, I did skip over that. um Yeah. Yeah, it's funny, this initial attraction between them.
00:28:54
Speaker
Okay, and then here's another question. Does it... Because Chandler like goes and and drops the cue ball here, right? and kind The way he throws it is very funny. Such a dork. ye ah It reminded me of this scene from ah Can't Hardly Wait.
00:29:16
Speaker
Whenever... um It's Seth Green, which Giovanni Ribisi and Seth Green, like they're interchangeable in my head. And I don't know why. Right. But they are.
00:29:30
Speaker
um But there's a scene from Can't Hardly Wait where Seth Green is listening to this girl talking and saying almost the exact same thing that Rachel says. And then he walks by and she's like, you know, the next guy that hits on me. And so then he immediately walks over to her and he's like, oh, are you an, um did you just fall or something? Because I see an angel right in front of me. so you know But it's the same kind of thing. as She makes him feel so stupid. But don't Chandler and Rachel know each other?
00:30:09
Speaker
This is debt they definitely definitely do. Whenever they were in college, whenever she her and Monica were still in high school. Yeah, they met. Oh, yeah, they met. um They met. We see them together in Ross and Monica's house, like, ah um at some point, because.
00:30:28
Speaker
Maybe she doesn't recognize him. He's got to go through. This might be. With Monica. Yeah. Yeah, they and they met in college. Rachel went to a college party and Ross and and Chandler were in Way No Way, you know, the band.
00:30:45
Speaker
So they they were all together in high school. Yeah, with the fucking seagulls hair. Yes. So she knows Chandler without a doubt how she wouldn't have put two two together with Monica when I think Monica even says something like, my friends and Chandler standing right there.
00:31:02
Speaker
Right. Yes. Glaring, glaring plot hole with that one. don't want to be all. But this is, well, anyway, we'll talk about it later. Yeah. I thought Rachel's, I mean, I say Rachel's rude to him, but this is old Rachel who is, you know, stuck up and all about marrying the doctor and that kind of stuff. So this kind of tracks for this alternate Rachel character.
00:31:30
Speaker
um You know, she's, all she really asks Monica is basically who she's dating, you know, because that's all that really seems to matter to Rachel. Okay, and so there was also a little scene that was cut out there. Whenever Monica, you know, he drops the cue ball and goes over there. And then he's like, and I picked it up again. and then Monica recognizes Rachel and she's like, oh my God, I went to high school with her. And she's like, Rachel, hi Yes. it's a rate ah And and then she like sticks her finger up like this. Right. And then Monica goes, is she giving me the finger?
00:32:12
Speaker
oh nice. That's right, because the ring's so big. She's so into her ring and everything else. But that so that was hilarious to me. And I was like, aw, that was like a cut.
00:32:29
Speaker
And that's sad. Yeah, that's a good... ter is That would be a good... Yeah, that's a good... then what does Monica say? You can't even see where the Titanic hit it or something, which is good line. Uh-huh. Yes. We're back in the girl's apartment and Ross is telling Carol to have this girl's night out with Susan, blissfully unaware of what may or may not be already going on over there. Yeah.
00:32:56
Speaker
Monica catches her taking the lamp out, but thinks quickly on her feet and says it needs to be rewired. Just like the stereo. Yeah, they've had it for a week. um this then we get the Even though this is a throwback in a sort of linear sense, this is the last time we will see Mr. Heckles.
00:33:16
Speaker
Because, of course, on the timeline, he's already passed. So a farewell to Mr. Heckles. They're disturbing his non-existent oboe practice. um I do love the way he you know ends up telling Eric you know that he's Chandler's new roommate, he told me in person. Yeah, what a... Yeah.
00:33:38
Speaker
And total creep. why Yeah. Why? And just, why Eric didn't... Eric says Chandler told him on the phone why he didn't call Chandler and say, hold on. knock on the door. Right, something.
00:33:54
Speaker
right there why not knock on the door and be like, hey, bro. What's happening here? yeah Yeah, I mean, that would be more like now. Hey, man. That's right.
00:34:06
Speaker
But why did he, yeah, this old crazy guy walking around the hallway in his his dressing gown. Like, why would he choose him? yeah you should he should have given Chandler a call. A call, or yeah he's right there. Yeah, go in and see him. And Chandler's home.
00:34:22
Speaker
Yeah. And then Chandler's left the door unlocked, so Mr. Heckles goes in and gives Chandler a... Such a good reaction. such a good reaction this The physical comedy is so good. Yes, it's so good in this episode. It really is.
00:34:44
Speaker
Matthew Perry and... um ah um Why can't I think of his name? You know, Ross... That would be David Schwimmer. Yeah, between the two of them, it's hilarious. and And Joey's hilarious. Yeah. it's all like yeah That's right. you met Well, we're coming because, yeah, he is um Oh, Joey's moving the boxes. Monica, they they end of flirting again in the hallway, and she invites him in for lemonade, literally just lemonade.
00:35:19
Speaker
He misinterprets this as an invitation for something else. um What's he thinking? What's he thinking? Okay. And then she's like, I mean, I guess it could happen. Not to anybody I know. Right. Anybody, anybody knows.
00:35:37
Speaker
But this is a throw forward or whatever to the story. Because, you know, later we're going to find out about Joey And different girls and like the story of the creeps, the single creeps out there. Right. And he's one of the stories.
00:36:02
Speaker
And he's like, oh, that is me. Do you remember that? is it where is it where he has a fake name? Yes. yeah Ken Adams. Ken Adams. Yes. Ken Adams. Yes. That's right. Ken Adams.
00:36:16
Speaker
character from the Simpsons. Right. Absolutely. Yes. Yeah. He, man, that's a ah bad mistake to make.
00:36:28
Speaker
Yes. You know, Monica just wanted to get to know him a little better over a glass of actual lemonade. um See, I think where she screwed up was whatever she said, make yourself care comfortable. Yeah.
00:36:42
Speaker
And then, ah but I say that. She didn't screw up. He's, Yeah, that this is all joy. What a creep. What a weirdo. Yeah. Yeah. No, no. It it seems to me like a good way to get yourself arrested, acting that. Oh, right? You know? Yeah. Bad things are going to happen. um I've got a question for you.
00:37:03
Speaker
In the next scene, we're still in the girls' apartment, and Monica is vacuuming and realizes that the bed is missing. This stood out to me as a rainbow vacuum, which I just remember seeing on, like, InfoMarshals. It was like a really โ€“ we talked about InfoMarshals last week. It was really expensive, like a Kirby. You know, it was like door-to-door, the last vacuum you'll ever buy.
00:37:25
Speaker
And I was curious, have you ever purchased one of those silly, expensive let's say silly, those really expensive vacuum cleaners? Heck no. I would never. Door-to-door salespeople terrify Right. They're so scary to me. Oh, my God.
00:37:45
Speaker
Okay. Have you ever bought any? Well, okay. Okay. Have I ever bought anything from a door-to-door salesperson? Absolutely not. I have not. i don't like it. I prefer not to answer my door. Right. like ah At my cousin's house one time, people came up to the door and she has like a screen door, but it's completely glass. Right. And we saw them walking up her drive and saying,
00:38:17
Speaker
You hid from the people.
00:38:22
Speaker
Like, that's, and ah what is that? I don't know. But do you want to know? do you want to know who does buy things from door-to-door salespeople? Would that be, it's it's either got to be Haley Lynn Phillips or Mr. Joseph Willison.
00:38:37
Speaker
Yes, Joseph Reed Woolison. And I have been so mad at him on multiple occasions. One time, whenever we were still living in Providence, there was this guy who would come around and he would be a meat salesman.
00:38:51
Speaker
Yes. And he got, uh-oh. Did you ever buy anything? from that guy Not a chance. It was delicious. It was delicious. Right. But absolutely not. But man, if you have a deal and a my husband, yep.
00:39:08
Speaker
Okay. So I got so mad. it wast her Fred was a baby. And I did not realize I had the bedroom doors open. Okay. like Right. not worth But my bedroom windows and the windows were right above the front porch. Okay. So I'm in there. I'm on the phone and it is after dark and it is probably nine o'clock at night on a school night.
00:39:34
Speaker
And our doorbell rings. And my husband goes to that door and he is outside talking to this meat guy. So I am on the phone with my mom. And I'm like, and I cannot believe that somebody would have the audacity to show up at my house at 9 o'clock and have a small school like to buy some shady ass, sorry, shady stuffed meat. Wait, all right, right?
00:40:02
Speaker
Right? Oh, and I was so mad and everything, but yeah, he sure did. He bought all kinds of meat from this man and then came upstairs to tell me that they could hear every single word I said and then I would call people die. but um But yeah, he had gotten in trouble because he was going around door to door without a permit in the and know what a big old no-no that is. Can't do that.
00:40:27
Speaker
No, but God, it was so good. it's the best chicken I have ever had. So there's a plus to it. But I like to think that it's because of all of my time I spent as an adult female living on my own. I don't answer the door for people that I don't know. You're being responsible. I'm not.
00:40:48
Speaker
buying anything i'm not i'm not gonna do that if i want something i will go to the store and purchase it yep i do not need you to drop dirt on my on my floor and try to vacuum it up you're not welcome Yeah, or leave le out leave a flyer in my door. that's That immediately makes me actually not want to use your business. I've got to be honest. if Because I've got no-soliciting sign-up. And if you leave something, you're ignore you're not respecting the sign.
00:41:16
Speaker
Y'all have cute one. Y'all. Yes, we do indeed. We're nice. We're kind people. But don't don't leave your your stuff attached to my door, please.
00:41:28
Speaker
Yes. Yeah. Well, Joseph has bought internet. Joseph has bought satellites. Joseph has bought meat. right neighbor child I will purchase I will oh they are invited yes right girls got cookies who is it you can solicit yeah but yeah if you're under the age of 15 16 you get to come along and I got you I think Joseph sold knives for a day or something right yeah Yeah, heavy do you know the knife salesman people?
00:42:08
Speaker
ah The only person I know is Phoebe, who who is going to do that for like a day when she's trying to make money. Okay. Yeah, but had to buy his knives.
00:42:21
Speaker
And then you go around and you sell them. This will be a question. We'll have a we'll have Joseph on the pod and we'll just ask him to share his feelings about door-to-door salesmen yeah he'll tell us the story. Well, nobody else in this household will have any feelings because I'm the only one who answers the door.
00:42:44
Speaker
It's a general... Like, if the doorbell rings and we're all downstairs, everyone just looks at me and they all say in unison, I'm not here. Yes. And that's this is how my world works.
00:42:57
Speaker
Yeah. Yes. Yeah, nobody's ever here but me. It's a funny thing. It's so weird. It's a weird thing. um Let's see. Yeah, I thought you might there might be a door-to-door sort of salesman a story there, so I'm glad I asked.
00:43:15
Speaker
um yeah But Phoebe ends up confessing she's moved out and she's told everyone else. um But they don't fall out over it, which I'm glad about, because I thought that that could like you know be some hurt feelings. But Monica, yeah she's hurt, but she understands.
00:43:33
Speaker
Well, okay. You say that, but guess what? There's a cut scene. There's another cut, yes. Where she's like, she you know tells her, everybody knows.
00:43:45
Speaker
And then and Monica gets all sad, and she's like, everybody knows? And she's like, well, that was... why and then monica goes i don't understand i thought we were doing so much better lately and phoebe's like right because i moved out right so she knew there had been some issues yeah yeah interesting and so that's so funny because i was like why would they cut that out but it's because that's what they wanted you to think is exactly where you were like
00:44:19
Speaker
you know, everything's good and she's not upset and it's all great. But like Monica was really upset. Interesting. um We jump over to the boys apartment. Joey introduces Chandler to Baywatch.
00:44:35
Speaker
He's instantly mesmerized with all the running. um And Joey has his beer right there. um Right there in the cooler. In the cooler. he's He's made himself at home and Chandler couldn't be happier at this point, I think. um yeah I was going to count the amount of beers I tried, but I couldn't in the cooler. It was unclear. But they but they do run out because Chandler goes over to Monica's and they it's not really foreshadowing, but it's a very touching moment of just the the friendship that's there.
00:45:08
Speaker
Okay. And it's just another piece where... yeah I just like them. they're just It's that foundation of friendship.
00:45:19
Speaker
And i mean, I don't know. They probably lived across from each other for a couple of years. um who You know, don't we don't really know.
00:45:29
Speaker
um i do. Sometimes i've thought I've wondered, is it a coincidence that they ended up living across from each other? Because they knew each other in high school. um Or did, like, Ross and Chandler go over to Rachel's and then Chandler saw a place, you know, for rent and was looking for a place? You know, how that happen? How did Chandler end up across the hall?
00:45:53
Speaker
Right. Or did Chandler, like, live there and then they found out that that was their grandma's place? Right. Right. Yeah, I don't know. Yeah, well interesting.
00:46:04
Speaker
I think it's, yeah, and it's also interesting because... Well, I guess they do drink still drink beer throughout the series, but not as much. like Not as much. here and You know, whenever they go over to the girls' apartment, they're not looking for alcohol.
00:46:23
Speaker
know and when um gorilla Have we had the one yet? nnt I've lost. i cannot remember where it is in the series. think it's later. um The one where the the friend we'd ever meet, this guy Gandalf,
00:46:37
Speaker
gendolph Yeah, he hasn't shown up. Yeah, that's later on. And so they go out because they're going party, but it gets to like, don't know, eight o'clock or something and they are done. Yeah.
00:46:48
Speaker
That's right, because they're 29. So yeah, it's much later on. ah yeah So yeah, the drinking, as as it does for most of us, I'm sure it kind of phases out um a little bit. Ooh.
00:47:00
Speaker
Yes. Okay. Fun piece of trivia. Since we're talking about Monica and Chandler and like their evolution and how much, you know, just that sweetness, right? Yeah. he She's standing there in a towel and he's just hugging her.
00:47:17
Speaker
Right. not it's It's not creepy or ooky. It's comfortable and and fine. There you go. Right. It's not the way Joey acted. Right. Right. Exactly.
00:47:32
Speaker
they were, this episode, they were testing out different couples to see how um the audience reacted. Ah, right. Which is why like Chandler and Rachel never knocked anything.
00:47:51
Speaker
Because it was a big... Ew. a big oo feedback from the audience. Interesting. So, yeah, I think that's interesting too.
00:48:03
Speaker
Yeah. No, I didn't, I didn't know that. Um, but it is, it's so wholesome, their friendship, um, which, which I, even the way he deals with the fact that he knew Phoebe had moved out, um,
00:48:18
Speaker
Yeah, he just handles it all so well. Speaking of not handling things well, Man Alive, I thought of you when we go over to the bar and Ross comes in. hi Like just ultimate 10 out of 10 sad sack behavior, which, i mean, somewhat understandable in this situation. But still.
00:48:37
Speaker
But in the way that he responds and declares. responds And ooh, Phoebe, he is not kind. and li Yeah. I'm sure somebody thinks he is.
00:48:55
Speaker
Yeah. And just not a good, decision that would not have been a good decision. um No. On anyone's part. So thankfully, um the pool table, the light, the pool balls, all these things got in their way of taking their activities any further. Yeah.
00:49:15
Speaker
but yeahll Oh, that's ah that's actually the next scene, isn't it? um Well, it kind of cuts in. There's a small cut in mine. Monica and Chandler still hugging. um and Yeah, yeah. Yeah, okay.
00:49:28
Speaker
Mine too. And it's whenever he's saying this is nice and you're like, oh, and then he's like talking about the towel. Yes. is it, what does it say, like cotton or 100% cotton or something? Yes. Yeah. And got it on sale.
00:49:45
Speaker
But, okay, but in that first scene with Ross and Phoebe and he's being a sad sack and all of that, but it made me, it It made me laugh and feel so sad for him at the same time. Whenever he's like, and I'd be out with my wife and she'd be like, wow, look at her. And I think, oh, my wife's so cool. Right? God dang, Ross. You were so close, Ross. Yeah. Yeah. But and I don't know.
00:50:17
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. We have a little little sympathy for Ross here. Yeah.
00:50:23
Speaker
But he's upset. He and Phoebe start kissing. I was going to try and have some trivia about the pool balls, but every scene or every like every time the camera moves, they change.
00:50:34
Speaker
Yeah. It's the same as that ice cream in the last one. Yes. Yes. Guys. Guys. Guys. But I guess... You know, the pool balls. Yeah, I don't know. Yeah, lots of takes, I'm sure. so funny.
00:50:52
Speaker
Like, that entire thing is so funny. And like we're the balls in and then he like sweeps them away and they all come right back. Right. They're in his way. And then it's just so funny.
00:51:08
Speaker
Yeah. It's ah it's an again, a bit of physical comedy, something about the way David Schwimmer sweeps the boy and then pauses. He's like, what do I do? They're all flying back at me. you know yeah and this Yes. And then, and hitting his head on the light. Yep.
00:51:24
Speaker
ah All of it. And just so just, it's just so good because it's you he knew. He knew. I don't know. It's just so funny.
00:51:35
Speaker
Yeah. It's, it's a good way to kind of end before we get to the very final scene, the penultimate scene here. Um, but then Joey and others come in and this is where Joey and Ross actually meet for the first time.
00:51:48
Speaker
um you know, wife's a lesbian. My wife's like, cool. Whatever it is he says. And, uh, Yeah, he's cool. Cool, and that's how they meet. yeah um But then the final scene in the bar, but it's not really in the bar, because Rachel's actually daydreaming ah about ah she and she and Chandler getting together, but she's actually...
00:52:10
Speaker
um driving home to Long Island, i assume, um after a night out with her friends. um I think that is, the if I recall correctly, that's the final scene. That's it.
00:52:25
Speaker
I did notice that on what really Monica's apartment door at this point, um there's no yellow frame around the peephole.

Episode Awards and Ratings

00:52:38
Speaker
That has not been added yet. Yep. So we don't have that iconic thing that's on our podcast when it goes out each week. The yellow frame.
00:52:50
Speaker
um It's just a purple door. Just a plain purple door. Yes. There you go. Yeah. So yeah, this it's an interesting one this week. Trying to think of a Gunther Central Park. Where did you land this week?
00:53:06
Speaker
Janice. yeah Yes. Yes. Janice, because all of this chaos and ridiculousness and plot holes and everything is all, thanks Janice. Janice is the reason.
00:53:20
Speaker
And Janice, and who's sitting around in a coffee house would even open up that conversation? Janice. Right. Janice does it. and you go Janice, she is, she is chaos and I love her. Well, I haven't had her in a long time. Good.
00:53:37
Speaker
Well, I think I was torn because I wanted to choose somebody, but i thought it's really not playing by the rules. And then I realized that we make the rules and who cares?
00:53:49
Speaker
So I just feel I want to give a little tip of the hat, a little nod to Mr. Heckles.
00:53:58
Speaker
It's the last time we'll see him. um is he in it much? No, but what he does is great. Yes. And honestly memorable and real.
00:54:09
Speaker
Exactly. And he's a good character. there's other you know Other characters are great, but nobody really stands out. So I just think a little honorable mention for Mr. Heckles this week. He's going to get the Gunther Central Park to thank him for his work. There you go.
00:54:26
Speaker
That's that's you's what we're going with. I didn't want pay. Right, exactly. So as soon as you said Janice, I was like, that's my my permission to go with my gut and go with Mr. Heckles.
00:54:38
Speaker
I love it. Yes, because we make the rules. Indeed. We have all the power over here. um Now, they're in a bar and they're drinking, a you know, knockoff. what It's designed to look like Bud Light that's not or Budweiser, but it's not. But it's all red and white labels. So we're going to have to go with 10 bottles of beer.
00:54:59
Speaker
um How many bottles of beer on the wall? ah Well, how many are sitting on the wall for you this week? Six and a half. that's That's one of your lower ones.
00:55:11
Speaker
It is. Yeah. Yeah. yeah no it's it's it it's this I found this one difficult to score. I ended up up with seven. um so similar Similar reasons for you, I'm sure. like It was okay.
00:55:26
Speaker
um i mean i I get a little nerdy and the plot holes bug me and I need to remind myself it's a television show and it doesn't matter. But i it I like it when it's consistent and and things add up. Wow. Well, and I am not one who actively looks for holes. I don't. write Right, right. I do. and and And spending time talking through this show with you has made me better at not focusing on those things. But yeah, like Rachel would have known Chandler.
00:56:04
Speaker
Yep. Yeah. it it The whole Carol and Ross thing, i mean, it just... it it's It's not right.
00:56:15
Speaker
It's not correct. It's just not. And so, yeah. i mean And it it was fine. it was funny. But like the flashbacks, that they weren't right.
00:56:26
Speaker
Yeah. It wasn't a necessary he episode. It was just, I feel like a filler. like we're We're not walking away with anything... from this. There's nothing that's done anything other than go, oh, Monica and Chandler are cute. Yeah, it's a standalone episode. Like, we don't... yeah And Phoebe could do way better than Ross. boom And maybe that's my real problem. Like, if we really want to dig down to the... Yes, peel back those layers. Phoebe's better taste.
00:57:00
Speaker
yeah me Phoebe, come on. Yeah, no, I 100% agree. um Next week, I remember the main storyline, but don't remember the rest. It is the one with the race car bed.
00:57:15
Speaker
Oh, I do remember this. Yeah. And funnily enough, and I won't ruin it, but one of the things that stands out to me, and I don't know why I find it so funny, is the delivery guy who makes the announcement that the bed has arrived.
00:57:31
Speaker
um It's just his delivery, like he's being beaten down. and this is the the the cards that life has dealt him. There's something about it I love. But we we won't mention that anymore.
00:57:42
Speaker
We'll save it for next week. um But i think that's it. Any final thoughts before we wrap this up?

Preview of the Next Episode

00:57:50
Speaker
um Well, I took it away so I can see myself in the camera and I'm still in the center, which is nice, but I have a giant zip right here.
00:58:00
Speaker
There you go. Will it be there next week? Will it be there next week? Tune in to find out. I just cover myself back up. Right. See? Yeah. Tune in next week to the Purple Door Podcast to find out.
00:58:16
Speaker
What are your final thoughts, Al? You know, i think i think we're on the same page. There's some funny stuff. um The continuity errors bug me a little more than perhaps they should.
00:58:27
Speaker
But it's a standalone episode that doesn't really serve a lot of purpose to me. um So funny, fine, but not one that I would miss if I never saw it again, and don't think. Yeah. Yeah, yeah the only thing I really liked is I liked seeing Central Park done as a bar. Just what I'm getting from this rewatch is enjoying looking at the set decorations and how things change and how they do it.
00:58:53
Speaker
um So I just, I enjoyed that. But that was kind of it. Kind of it. too All right. Well, as we said, next week, it will be the one with the race car bed. But on that note, thank you, as always, for listening to the Purple Door podcast.
