In today's reading we will read the Book of John Chapter 2. We will read about Jesus turning water into wine at the request of his mother, despite fussing at her that the matter had nothing to do with either of them. Then we will see Jesus passionately driving out animals from the temple market and turning over money changing tables and performing wonders at the Pass Over festival. When questioned by the leaders about his authority to do such things  and to perform a wonder to prove his authority, Jesus responded that he would rebuild the torn down temple in three days, alluding to his death and resurrection. With the various wonders he was performing he drew superficial believers and Jesus did not trust them because he knew their hearts.

In our discussion for daily application we will talk about the importance of loving Jesus and God with our whole heart, not just following rules thinking that is what will get us by. God has always desired a relationship with His people and with Jesus it is no different. God knows our hearts, the way Jesus knew who was really going to follow him and who would not, who was believing on the basis of seeing him do amazing things, and who believed in him without those signs. The amazing things that God and Jesus do are like frosting on a cake. They are not the basis for our belief. We love Jesus and God because they loved us first, not because Jesus performed miracles. Let us love Jesus and God with our whole hearts, making God the most important one in our lives, and then we will see God do amazing things in our lives.

The Miracle at Cana

00:00:42
Speaker
Today, we are going to be reading one of my favorite stories. I love it. This is the one where Jesus's mom tells him to do something about the wine being out being out of wine at a wedding.
00:00:58
Speaker
I love this story. So we're going to get right into it today.
00:01:05
Speaker
Today's reading comes to us from John chapter two, and it's the whole chapter.
00:01:13
Speaker
A wedding party is the title of our first section. And then after that, we will read about the money tables.
00:01:21
Speaker
So remember, this is actually everything that's occurring is happening right after another. So yesterday we saw that Jesus was, ah that John the Baptist saw Jesus and said, look, it's the Lamb of God.
00:01:34
Speaker
And some of his ah followers immediately went over to follow of Jesus. And then they went and told other people, their brothers, and then other people came and they also went and told people to come.
00:01:47
Speaker
So we were seeing Jesus, Jesus's followers are beginning to grow.

Significance of Jesus' Ministry Age

00:01:52
Speaker
One thing I wanted to note as well, you may remember that when these things happened, when Jesus was ah went through the baptism with John and he began his ministry and we read that he was 30 years old.
00:02:09
Speaker
So why is that detail included? Why is that important? Why? Because in Jewish tradition, 30 years is when a man would be considered old enough to be installed as a priest for his term of service, to be a priest at the temple.
00:02:28
Speaker
It would not start until he was 30. So you may remember it was, I think it was Ezekiel who, when God called him, Ezekiel said, but I'm just a boy. and it's because he was less than 30.
00:02:41
Speaker
He was younger. And God said, You don't get to tell me when you I'm ready to put you into service. But here Jesus reached ah the age that he would begin his ministry at age 30.
00:02:52
Speaker
And i learned today that that is because 30 is the age that the ah men would be considered of age. And it's written in in ah one of the books too, like Deuteronomy or Leviticus. It's one of the laws, one of the rules that when they reach that age, that's when their term of service would begin.
00:03:13
Speaker
So I just wanted to point that out. Nothing is is ah irrelevant in the details that we are given. All of the details are important if we take the time to figure out why they're there.
00:03:28
Speaker
So here we go. Yesterday, ah we saw, as I said, people coming into Jesus's ministry now, if that has begun. And so this says it was two days after that.
00:03:40
Speaker
So two days later, there was a wedding in Galilee and it was in a town called Cana or Cana, I'm not sure.

Impact of the Miracle at Cana

00:03:48
Speaker
Jesus and his friends went and Jesus's mother went too.
00:03:53
Speaker
But the people who were having the party ran out of wine. So Jesus's mother went to him. They're out of wine, she said. Why do you want me to take care of things like this?
00:04:05
Speaker
Said Jesus, it's not time yet. Jesus's mother talked to the servants. Do whatever he asks you to do, she told them. So there were six big stone jars close by, and the jars were there to hold water.
00:04:21
Speaker
And the water was used by the Jews to wash their hands in a special way. And each jar could hold about 20 to 30 gallons. That's a big jar.
00:04:34
Speaker
Fill those jars with water, Jesus told the servants. So the servants filled them all the way to the top. Now, said Jesus, dip some of it out and then take it to the man in charge of the party.
00:04:46
Speaker
So the servants did just what Jesus said. The man in charge took a drink. And he did not know that it had been water because it it had been turned into the wine.
00:05:00
Speaker
But the servants knew. So the man in charge talked to the people who got married. Most people give everyone the best wine first. After a while, every everyone has had too much to drink.
00:05:13
Speaker
And so then they bring out the wine that's not as good. But you, you saved the best wine for now. And this was the very first wonder that Jesus did.
00:05:27
Speaker
And it showed how great he was. Then Jesus's followers believed in him.

Cleansing of the Temple

00:05:35
Speaker
It was almost time for the Passover holiday, so Jesus went to the worship house in Jerusalem. Jesus found animals in the closed-in yard around the worship house. Men were selling cows and sheep and doves, and other men sat at money tables, and they were changing money so that people from different places could buy things.
00:05:57
Speaker
Jesus got some rope and made a whip. Then he chased out the sheep and the cows. He tossed the money here and there, and he turned the money tables over.
00:06:11
Speaker
Get these out of here, he told the people who were selling doves. How dare you turn my father's house into a store? And that made Jesus' followers remember a psalm.
00:06:25
Speaker
I care so much for your house. I just have to do something about it. said the song.
00:06:33
Speaker
But the Jews said, show us a wonder and prove that you have the right to do this. Tear down this worship house, said Jesus, and I will bring it back again in three days.
00:06:47
Speaker
Three days, said the Jews. It took 46 years to build this worship house. But Jesus was really talking about his own body.
00:06:58
Speaker
His followers remembered this after he died and came back to life. Then they believed the words that God had told the people to write down. And they believed the words that Jesus said.
00:07:12
Speaker
Many people saw Jesus at the Passover holiday and they saw the wonders that he was doing. So they believed in him. But Jesus did not trust the people.

Reflection on Jesus' Teachings

00:07:25
Speaker
He knew what was in their hearts.
00:07:30
Speaker
That's the end of our reading today.
00:07:35
Speaker
So let me tell you why I love the water into wine story. This must have been a close family friend type of a thing. They were at a wedding and this was apparently somebody that Mary knew.
00:07:48
Speaker
And when someone came to Mary and said, oh, we're out of wine, she knew that Jesus could do something about it. And so she went to him. And she told Jesus that they were out of wine.
00:08:01
Speaker
I'm going to read this out of the big Bible because I love the wording in there even more. it's it just It makes me laugh. It makes me laugh.
00:08:11
Speaker
John chapter 2.
00:08:17
Speaker
It says, when the wine ran out, Jesus's mother said to him, they don't have any wine. And Jesus said to her, woman, what does this have to do with you and me?
00:08:28
Speaker
My hour hasn't come yet. Now in true mother form, when mom told him to do something and he came up with a reason, why is this my problem?
00:08:41
Speaker
She didn't even bother to dignify him with an answer. She just completely ignored what he said and said to the servants, do whatever he tells you to do. Meaning she knew that he was going to do it anyways.
00:08:54
Speaker
No, it wasn't his problem. But Jesus obeyed his mom anyways. He fussed a little at her, but he did it.
00:09:07
Speaker
and And she didn't even bother to dignify him with an answer. I just love that. that That to me was just great. That that really, that but makes me laugh every time I read that passage.
00:09:20
Speaker
So it says at the end of that, that when the that the disciples saw that and that they, ah it says, Jesus did this, the first of the signs in Cana of the Galilee, and he revealed his glory and his disciples believed in him.
00:09:37
Speaker
I don't want us to become confused in the fact that they didn't believe in him prior to this. They believed in him already. You notice that they were already saying when they started to follow him, because first John the Baptist told the his followers, look, that is the lamb of God. I saw the spirit of God come down and land on him.
00:09:57
Speaker
And he is the one that God told me would be thet hit the the lamb of God, God's son to save the people from their sins. And the people came to him and they said that you are the anointed one. I found the prophet that Moses talked about. We have waited and for.
00:10:16
Speaker
And so they already believed that he was the Messiah. But now they were really believing even more. They were just shocked because remember, the people thought that he was initially coming as a political leader.
00:10:30
Speaker
a king So when they use the words, the king of the Jews, in their mind, they were thinking that he was there to save them from Rome. He was going to take over the the leadership. That's why Herod was ah so threatened by his birth.
00:10:46
Speaker
If Herod and the Jews had understood when he was born, that he was not to be a political leader, but to be the one that God would set up as as ruler of the earth, but in a spiritual manner, not in a political manner, that won't come until later.
00:11:04
Speaker
Then he wouldn't have been threatened by him and needed to kill all of the babies that were in born in Bethlehem that were two years old and younger. But people had the wrong idea. and it didn't change who jesus was it just meant that they didn't understand so now they were seeing him doing wonders and so now when we see him in the temple throwing over the money tables and having what we call zeal he was zealous for god's house he had a great deal of love for his father's house
00:11:36
Speaker
that he had to do something. The people were permitted to sell sacrificial animals to pay for their atonements and their sin offerings and to offer offerings to God.
00:11:49
Speaker
But they were making a huge profit on it. So they were ripping the people off. And they were turning it into a marketplace versus being a charitable place for for the service to ah obey God's commandments and his his laws.
00:12:09
Speaker
And then the the the leaders wanted him to perform a sign. And so he said the only sign that they would be given. Later on, he tells them the same thing. He says the only sign the people will be given is the sign of Jonah, where he goes into the belly of the earth for three days.
00:12:28
Speaker
So that's at least twice where he tells them that he will fulfill this ah in the three days. And... So he did not need to provide them a sign.
00:12:40
Speaker
They were doing it to be snotty. And in the same way, the people who saw him doing wonderful things, they were like, wow, that guy is great. Look, at he can perform all these signs.
00:12:51
Speaker
But Jesus knew their heart. Just the same way that we saw yesterday when Jesus saw Simon, he said, I'm going to call you Peter, the rock. When he saw Nathaniel coming, he said, now there is a Jew, who a man who tells the truth. In the big Bible, it says a Jew.
00:13:10
Speaker
He says that here's a man who tells the truth. There are no lies in him. And Nathaniel asked, how could you know me? Jesus knows our heart, just like God knows our hearts.
00:13:23
Speaker
And God has ah told us throughout the old covenant that he wants us to love him with our heart. He wants us to make him the most important one. It's not about actions. It's not about fulfilling a checklist of things. Yep, I read my Bible today. Yep, I read the Bible every single day.
00:13:40
Speaker
i make sure I never miss an event at church. I make sure when there are donations to be taken, I give donations. That's not what God is looking for. He's looking for us to love him.
00:13:52
Speaker
Those things are meant to be done out of a desire to to be obedient and to love him. It's not what we do. It's how we do it. Jesus didn't need ah circus followers.
00:14:08
Speaker
He was looking for people to follow him with their heart. So while these things were frosting and cherries on the top for the disciples, who didn't understand everything that he was there to do or how he was going to do it, they initially already were following him and believed in him.
00:14:28
Speaker
And all of the rest of the things that he showed them that they had the authority to do by casting out demons and, and, um, teaching the people and to perform healing and like that.
00:14:42
Speaker
Those were things that Jesus taught them that they had the authority to to do They didn't cause the disciples to believe. It was just that, wow, they really believed that he was, wow, God gave him all of this power and they were amazed, but their heart was already there with Jesus.
00:15:00
Speaker
And that's important. Jesus and God do amazing things through us, but we don't believe because he does amazing things through us. We already believe in him.
00:15:13
Speaker
We love him and we love him. Why? Because he first loved us. So it's, it's not what we do. It's how we do it. And God knows our hearts.

Encouragement to Share the Message

00:15:25
Speaker
And that's the most important thing today for our daily application is to be sure that we are loving God with our heart. not It's not simply about making sure we check the box for giving the tithe because he doesn't want us to do things out of a sense of obligation. He wants us to do things because we choose to.
00:15:43
Speaker
because we are doing what is right, because we understand the difference between what is right and what is wrong. God wants us to do the things that are right. And it's not about making sure that we do them, it's doing them with the right heart.
00:15:59
Speaker
So I hope that you feel that today's ah reading opened up your eyes and lit your light inside so that we make sure that we are motivated to do things the right way, that we are loving Jesus with our heart.
00:16:11
Speaker
And we're not just simply saying, okay, yeah, I'm doing these because he taught them and i'm hat and I have to do them and I'm supposed to do them. ah Kind of like how Jesus obeyed his mom today.
00:16:25
Speaker
So thank you for watching today. And if you do feel that God has lit your light today, then kindly click that light button. That one that looks like a share, a subscribe, follow, thumbs up, a heart, whatever it looks like.
00:16:40
Speaker
click that light button. And remember, it's not for me. has nothing to do with me. These are lights that attract people to reading God's word. We want people to learn about God and Jesus.
00:16:52
Speaker
And we can do that by clicking that light button because then it pops up for people to see it and they might go, oh, I'm sure that at least some of you are here because somebody has shared this event with you.
00:17:05
Speaker
I don't know, 22 people. 23 people now. So thank you yeah for whoever has subscribed in the last day, made 23 here on YouTube.
00:17:16
Speaker
It doesn't sound like a very impressive number, but you know what? I think it is it because God is is reaching the people that he wants to reach. And ah like I shared the other day with my coworker who was next to me and said that he would ah wanted to share this event with some of his Christian friends.
00:17:37
Speaker
i I just, I thought that was amazing that God just puts people at that right time. and God used him to to be a sharer. So you never know. so ah you are meant to be the one that shares this event so that other people can hear God's word. Cause we wanna spread the word about reading God's word.

Conclusion and Invitation for Future Engagement

00:17:57
Speaker
And I know that that's important for you too, if you are here listening or watching, ah that you also want to share the word about reading God's word. So we can do that by clicking that light button. That's the point there.
00:18:09
Speaker
So I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day, whatever you're doing or whenever time you get around to reading or or sorry, not reading. I'm reading. You're listening or watching ah today's entry for our daily Bible reading.
00:18:22
Speaker
And you know where I will be found tomorrow. You can find me right here, wherever you're listening or watching for tomorrow's daily reading. See you later.
