Introduction and Hosts' Life Updates

00:00:02
Speaker
Hello and welcome to episode number 27 of Just Shillin. I am one of your hosts, Sean Huffman. And I'm your other host, Andy Bell. heyed I'm okay. I'm It's been like a roller coaster the last couple of weeks. And so ah like it's not i'm not bad. there's not It's not a bad thing. It's just like, whoo, whoo, whoo, up and down, up and down, up and down. ah so But other than that, I mean, for the most part, I'm um i'm i'm above water. you know i'm doing I'm doing well. How about yourself? I'm good, man. um I was about to say, are you in a bit of a funk because you're kind of trying to get back to reality? Because that's where I am at the moment.
00:00:49
Speaker
you know we had you' You've had an extremely busy and immense June, early July. I was away for the first couple of weeks in July and the last week and a half since getting back has been tough. It's been really, really tough, man. I mean, it's trying to get back into the spirit of of work um and to remain enthused has been quite a challenge for me the last week and a half. I mean, there is some pretty exciting stuff going on that um I'm getting involved in, which is great.
00:01:27
Speaker
um and that's that That's kind of slowly but surely dripping, drip feeding some adrenaline back into me. But um yeah, it's been tough, man. And it's, um it doesn't help.

Weather Comparisons: UK vs. Sierra Nevada

00:01:41
Speaker
I don't really want to do the typical Brit thing and talk about the weather, but it doesn't help being back in the UK, being back in the UK in the middle of summer and it's raining and it's like, oh no. Can we not at least enjoy the summer anyway? But no, we can't.
00:02:01
Speaker
But yeah no, um' i'm ah I'm all right, man. I'm all right. I'm all right. big yeah i can I can make you feel more great gratitude more gratitude towards that. At least you don't live in a state that is so dry that a single bolt of lightning will just catch half the state on fire. so But it rate rate constant rain does does get tiring. you You haven't had any scares yet, have you you guys? nothing Nothing close. I mean, there's there's always fires until I have like the the alerts on my phone and kind of keep track of them. But nothing nothing close. So we're we're all good here. Knock on wood. and you And I remember you talking about when you were talking about um
00:02:42
Speaker
how the state, I mean, the state bans fireworks for 4th of July, et cetera, et cetera. But if there is a fire in the region, do you guys have all the infrastructure in place to kind of reach out for yourselves? So living it in the the Sierra Nevada mountains, we have an overwhelming amount of uh like fire resources here and then they'll also pull like depending on where it's at how big it is they'll bring in like state resources or even federally they'll bring in resources i'll have to send you a picture we actually have this plane um here that's called like a scoop like a scooper plane so it'll fly and scoop the water out of the lake without stopping and then just come up and then go drop it in places so it can just keep doing loops it's uh
00:03:30
Speaker
That's pretty cool. But yeah, we have we have tons of resources. I think the the biggest issue is a lot of the fires always and start out remotely. um And everything, everything is just so tight so so dry that it just ignites really fast. like But they've been doing a lot of work um with ah controlled burns, where they where they kind of do break everything, the piles and burn it and they burn areas and try to get rid of like the low the low vegetation. But you can't do that everywhere. Like you can only do it in so much and so little at a time ah just to try to prevent. So when there is a fire, it's not like this giant fires that are burning so hot that they just roast everything really quickly. But yeah, we have to we have all that say we have a lot of resources. um Good. we We also have a lot of fires. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:04:15
Speaker
but luckily the mentality is changing from what it was 20, 30, 50, 100 years ago um and less about fire prevention, like absolutely no fires and yada, yada, yada, but now they're going into more controlled burns and like fires required and fires and necessity and like, but how do we control it and have smaller fires that we can control so they don't get absolutely overwhelming like they did two years ago when the fires were really close to our place and we had to evacuate.

Office Mishaps and Ergonomics

00:04:45
Speaker
yeah was ah got it good different world to me mate different world to me i mean we get um we get too much heat the whole country shuts down that we get too much rain the whole country shuts down we have a little bit of snow let's say half an inch on the floor and goodness me it's armageddon um it's uh yeah we're we're we're we're we're reassuringly um under resourced um and ill prepared for anything
00:05:14
Speaker
like the most simple of rain condition oh sorry simple of weather conditions. I have done a couple of things this week though, which a couple of things have happened to me this week that's quite exciting. So um in order to cheer myself up, I made the most of the yeah the prime sale. um last week and I bought myself an office chair because you and I have spoken about how bad our backs are and how ill prepared we are ah ill fit we are for our ah ah podcasting endeavors and I've finally got a ah chair which you can see here a high back chair with lumber support and
00:05:50
Speaker
Very, very nice headrest. um and um you don't want to You don't want to push it around at all? You're not going to? No, no, no. Thanks for that. Thanks for that. um I might as well share it then. um Yeah, so I built it last one night. It's on what they call easy glide rollers or easy glide wheels. And um I was on a call with a new partner of ours, um Today at work and um I forgot that this chair was on rollers and so while I'm. Engaging with these people on a on a video call I make the silly mistake of just leaning back very very slightly in my chair only for the.
00:06:32
Speaker
the momentum of that motion to carry me across the room into a bookcase, um which was interesting um for both myself and and the partner at the time, because it wasn't it wasn't particularly graceful. And it made quite a lot of noise and a lot of things, including my bloody Lego Omnithopter from June model, um, fell on the floor and smashed into a million pieces.

Mental Health Initiatives at Work

00:07:05
Speaker
So, um, yeah, that was interesting, but I'm loving the chair. Now I've got used to it. I just need to remember that it's got wheels on it. Um, yeah, that was, that was a bit embarrassing, but the good news is, um,
00:07:23
Speaker
um, and I'm, I don't normally blow my own trumpet or anything like that but got I got an award at work um today which was nice. um So I am part of the diversity and inclusion team at work and um Part of my um my passion is towards mental health and mental and health awareness and wellbeing. and we had an My team did an awful lot of work ah in May, being that May is the yeah the Mental Health Awareness Month globally. and We did a heck of a lot of work raising awareness. and
00:08:03
Speaker
you know, sort of sharing personal stories, I mean, you know, the circumstances of my father, for example, and, and I use that as kind of my springboard as to why I feel passionate about mental health, especially when it comes down to burnout anxiety at work and, and mental illness that come from from work related stress or work related illnesses. um Anyway, it was it seemed to have resonated quite well in the organization and um Yeah, we got we got a bit of an award for that, which was at the end of year because our fiscal years work as you know, our fiscal years work from um July to June, every single year, sorry, of ah every year. um it's It's the way that our business works. And so this this was the celebrations for last year being up till
00:08:51
Speaker
the end of June this year. um And yeah, we got an award for that. And and for all of the things that um I've done at work, that's probably um more one of the things I'm most proudest for because it's so close to my heart. So yeah, pretty chuffed, pretty chuffed. Hell yeah, man. That's awesome. um That was good to to be recognized and the team that supported me with it did so much really, really good work. um I'm really, really proud of all of them. Anyway, that was that. um i wish we I wish we had more of that in across more industries, like just even in focus. I mean, for, you know, like i I work many years in Silicon Valley and still kind of, I work in tech and things like that. And that is that is something that I think a lot of companies talk about.
00:09:40
Speaker
um Like I know there's jokes all over the internet of like, hey, we want to do something really good for you. Oh, cool. Do we get more days off? They're like, how about a pizza party? um And it's it's nice to see more companies and more people truly getting invested in in mental health and mental health awareness. Beyond maybe the low-hanging fruit that everybody always assumes like oh, you know You should meditate or you should do this that and the other but like really getting involved in in making it more of a conversation um and maybe removing some of the stigma about it because I think there's a lot of times where it's Oh for sure but you you can recognize that but it's it's it's but you don't you don't want to talk about it So I think I'm glad that we're kind of moving in that direction. That's awesome that you're a part of it
00:10:25
Speaker
Oh, I mean, without a doubt, I mean, if you look at the, you know, even the most recent statistics, I think the latest latest ones that I'm using at the moment from WHO or WHO is, um you know, so stigma is still, despite all of the amazing work that's happened in the last, let's say, 10 years, 10, 15 years, the stigma all of of mental health, anxiety or depression is still the most pervasive
00:10:55
Speaker
barrier to tackle, if you like. yeah it's the it's it's still It's still the biggest barrier to tackle. And indeed, you know especially if especially if you're part of a minority, um where um yeah if you're a minority, I mean, one of the one of the statistics that I find interesting is that if you're part of the LGBTQI community in particular, you're more likely to um suffer from depression, um but most importantly,
00:11:27
Speaker
um or Sorry, not suffering from depression depression, anxiety or or stress. um But most importantly, you're less likely to to to find help um because because of the stigma associated not only with your condition, but also stigma associated with how you identify. And it's these kind of statistics which are mind blowing to me that, you know, in a day like 2024, we're still, we're still having to fight those kind of battles. So yeah, no, it's, it's, um, there's a, there's a long way to go, but, um, I'm really, I'm really proud of the team that I work with that support me with this. And, um, and most importantly, I'm, I'm happy with the way that our business has
00:12:12
Speaker
embraced it and allowed people like me to talk about it a lot more. I mean, one of some of the some of the ah support facilities that we have for our employees now can now can apply to their loved ones as well, which I think is amazing. And and quite frankly, you know when you think about um Sorry, we will stop, I promise you, but we think about you know suicide being the second largest killer of children um between the ages of 12 and 18. It's amazing that that that the people that I work with recognize that and they're now thinking about it's not just about you, about the you know we want to look after our employee, of course we do, we want to look after our asset, we've put a lot of money into them.
00:13:00
Speaker
um But also making sure they've got ah a sound or a balanced home life is equally as important because they'll perform better. I mean, at at the end of the day, it's about, you know, it's about commerce. yeah Most businesses. is But the fact that they're now extending our service, our support services to loved ones, partners, yeah ah and and and their dependents, I think is... um is really quite, is really, it's really good and quite progressive. So, um, yeah, were we're long way to go, but, um, yeah, very happy. We're a, some of our parts and the better our community, our tight-knit community, or even just our yeah larger community is the the better everybody is and is, and you know, it is, it is for business reasons, but you know, Hey, support is support and I'm here for it. Um, uh,
00:13:47
Speaker
Yeah, I'm a big fan of the progress we've made in the mental health space. And obviously, we still have a ways to go. But you know, that's awesome. Congratulations on the award. Thank you on board. Thank you. Right now. so what about So what about news this week, my friend? Have you have you heard it anything? I mean, there's a couple of... I'll be honest with you, because we finished because we finished last week, we finished Ahsoka last week, and we do have some, as promised to our many, many monistlers, we do have some irons in the fire with some very, very special people that hopefully will be joining us soon. But, you know, first week back um after the after the yeah the the finale of Ahsoka,

Home Improvement Adventures

00:14:31
Speaker
soaker of the acolyte ah of the acolyte um I didn't think we'd have anything to talk about so I have done some research but but you go first So, so mine's kind of news. And so first I want to start off with a correction or acknowledgement apology or whatever it is. And you know, fall on my sword for this one. Um, last week, if for some reason you were listening to the episode and it just kind of cut off.
00:15:02
Speaker
and it stopped after like an hour. ah That was me. That was, I don't mean, I don't know what the root cause was, but that was me because I upload the episode. I re-uploaded it, the full version, where I think the the tail end is a lot better. So I encourage you to give it a listen. But if you ran into that, just to delete the delete delete the episode and re-download it and it'll be their corrected version. um But yeah, that was now something on my checklist that I'm going to check for to make sure it doesn't happen again. Not sure what happened, but yeah, that did. ah So there's that. The other news kind of also mixed with my week a little bit. um maybe I'm thinking about maybe doing an episode all about you know refinishing outdoor wood and how to identify wood rot. And I also learned that there's no such thing as dry rot. It's a made up term. um But yeah, i i may do I may do a solo episode where I do a brain dump about what
00:16:00
Speaker
ah the the The ups and downs of the roller coaster of refinishing a deck that is way bigger than you ever thought it was, and all the nuances there. um So yeah, I've been learning a lot about that, so it's that's fun. i have a I have a confession. I did curse your name the other day. the weekend At the weekend, it was actually good weather, so I thought, great, I'll get out in the garden. And my neighbors, they have a huge, huge um apple tree and they're, they're getting on a bit and they can't maintain their garden. Um, and they have a huge apple tree that, that kind of very much unless controlled and you know how fast apple trees can grow. If you cut them back hardy, you know, if you can really, really cut them back and, um, they'll grow quite prolifically anyway, it's growing quite prolifically. It's like, okay, I'm going to come over. I'll cut, I'll cut everything down.
00:16:57
Speaker
and the And as I was climbing over our dividing fence, I put my step ladder down. I don't think I'd say dividing fence. I think that's just what a fence is. A fence, sorry. A fence. Because it's easier than actually going down the drive, up the road to their house, and then up their drive to their place. It's easy just to jump over the fence. Anyway, I put my step ladder down, and I went straight through my decking. it' like Hell yeah. Complete rot. Complete rot for about, I would say, six foot square piece of our decking. And like the first thing I thought of was, Hoffman, you've cursed me. You've cursed my decking.
00:17:42
Speaker
So yeah, that's got to be fixed soon. I don't know if I'll get around to it this year, but, um, hopefully it'll all rot over the winter and Lucy will agree. That's a good idea to pave the whole thing. Anyway, just throw so i interrupt throw a piece of plywood over the top of it for like two years. Yeah. Do what you did. Yeah, exactly. Don't, don't put any more paint or sealant on it and just let it just add as add fuel to the fire. Like like a metaphorical fire. Yeah. And just, yeah, you'll be amazed at what it, what it can do in a, in a short amount of time. Sorry, I interrupted you, man. Sorry. No, no, no, that's totally fine. But yeah, I've been. and One project has spun into like six. Yeah, what's funny, what's funny is is Madison and I will go on walks like every morning and it's usually in the evening to before it's a good way to start our day, especially since we work from home and it's claustrophobic and crazy. um We've noticed in the last couple of weeks
00:18:36
Speaker
walking around, it's like, oh, there's a lot of other people. Like, so we're kind of like off this highway and then you kind of go back into the neighborhood. If we go back, you see more people doing similar things to what we're doing varying degrees. It's like, oh, I wonder if people have driven by and then somebody's partners like, you know what, we should do that. And then somebody there's other people cursing my name, being like, I don't want to do that because now I see a lot of people doing similar things. to what we're doing, not to the scale and scope because nothing's been done. Dude, du it's a thing. It's a thing. People see other people doing modifications or refurbishment or restoration to their house and usually one of the other half will say, well,
00:19:24
Speaker
We need to do that as well. So it's it's a thing. It's a thing. And that's the best part. That's the best part is we to my fate are one of our neighbors who we we interact with a lot. ah His he for work, he actually does like finish woodworking like really nice finish woodworking for houses and builds decks and yada yada yada and staircases and all that stuff like that's his job. It's what he's done forever. And he's been talking about he has an absolutely massive deck. That's the cost of a carport and all this stuff that he's been talking about. As long as we've lived here, like, oh, we're going to redo that, you know, next year, next year, next year. And now there's always a convenient reason. Like, oh, I think they're going to Ireland or something later this summer. It's like, oh, cool. And that makes sense. No wonder you're so excited to do that, because now you don't have to build a deck or pay for a deck. Yeah. But what's funny is, is I think because they live past us,
00:20:16
Speaker
I think they've been seeing us do this. And so the other day he was out and like rebuilding, like they have like a porch swing, like a wooden porch swing, but broke from the snow. And he's out there just building it. I'm like, Oh. working on your deck? He's like, No, she wanted she wanted me to fix fix the port swing. So now I'm just gonna do this really fast. He's just going real fast. And like, yes, I like to believe, because we kind of have an antagonistic neighborly relationship anyways, for a multitude of reasons. But it's kind of like, I hear i hope that
00:20:49
Speaker
I was the cause of this. I hope there was a conversation of like, well, if they're working on their crappy deco, at least you can do is rebuild our swing. And so excellent. Yeah. So i I sleep better at night knowing that. I've been my ears were itching or burning, where they say, I hope that I hope I had a hand in that. But anyways, other than that, the news, so I've apologized for messing up the

Exciting Movie Trailers and Adaptations

00:21:15
Speaker
episode. I've waxed poetic about my my love for refinishing this deck. I don't have any other news. i I've seen stuff come out about Star Wars, the game, and other things, but that's all. I didn't pick that up, but it's met it's mainly about yeah they the silver screen, actually. um So a couple of trailers came out this week.
00:21:37
Speaker
um or since we last spoke, which tickled my fancy. First of all, Captain America Brave New World, that came out. um And I don't know a lot about it, but um I've listened to a couple of pods that are starting to speculate what it's about. And it seems to be that, oh, I've forgotten the guy's name. So Harrison Ford's playing, oh, what's Betty's dad called? Betty's dad. but he's the red hole yeah yeah And and he he basically becomes the red hulk, which sounds interesting. i didn't know I don't know anything about the story, that I don't know anything about the lore. And because of that, i'm I can't speculate whether it's going to be or think whether it's going to be good or bad. i'm just It looks quite good. And again, I haven't really seen, in fact, the first Disney movie we're going to see for God's sake is going to be next week when we go to pop and see what tickets booked for. um
00:22:37
Speaker
Deadpool and Wolverine coming up so anyway this looks like this this also looks quite interesting and I think it's a kind of attempt to reboot along with Deadpool it's kind of attempt to reboot um the franchise a little bit um inject also so in yeah exactly also saw um the and i mentioned this a couple of weeks ago because it came out of the balloon i didn't know anything about it but there's the this anime terminator series that's coming out on tv soon and the first um the first trailer for terminator zero came out looks really cool looks really really cool very
00:23:19
Speaker
What can I say? is it's It's anime. it's um It looks very, very ghost in the shell. It looks really, really cool. um So I'm really looking forward to that. I think that comes out in August. um
00:23:35
Speaker
Expanded trailer for June Prophecy. So this is the TV series that is set hundreds of years before um Paula Trades. And we spoke a little bit about it last time. It's kind of like the the the origins of the Ben Nijezeret sisterhood, which I'm really excited about because I have read a lot of Frank Herbert. I haven't read them all. I certainly don't know an awful lot of the about the time before the um uh, Paula Trades. So I'm really looking forward to that. And it looks really tasty. And I think I said at the time, the aesthetics look very, very akin to Denis Villeneuve's, um, Dune as well. So there might be, you know, of course it's a different director's take on it, but it looks like it's paying homage.
00:24:27
Speaker
um and wanting to to be in the same kind of universe, of course it is but you know what I mean, the same same aesthetic ah universe as as Denny's film. Sighted about that because you know I like a little bit of Dune and then lastly the um the last ah trailer I saw was actually a featurette and it was a featurette for Borderlands. The um the new film that's coming out also in August um based on the um the popular video game. I really want to enjoy this film because I will go and see it because I loved, you know, I'm i'm a great um a great um fan of the franchise. I think it's hilarious, but it's not landing with me at the moment. It feels like
00:25:23
Speaker
I hope it, sorry, stay positive, that's what we do. I hope it's not a another another production company or another um studio trying to find their version of Guardians of the Galaxy, because it's a very, very different franchise to that. And at the moment, the overly comedic um
00:25:53
Speaker
um the manner of the of the of the trailer um it just has me a little bit worried that's all my and again you that that Do you remember me saying to you that in my mind, the best video game to silver screen conversions are those that don't try to be identical to the video game. They don't try and copy it. They do their own spin. Fallout, classic example. I mean, aesthetically, it looks similar, but they dial down some of the
00:26:27
Speaker
the that the the that the saturation of of the video game environment. And I don't see that at the moment with with with Borderlands. And I really, really hope I'm like umm i'm wrong. um i'm just a little I'm just a little bit nervous because i do like I said, I do like the franchise. Do you want to know what it reminds me of? It reminds me, the previews remind me of in the show The Boys when they show like Vought productions of like Vought movies. Yes. It's like a parody of like something else. It's like it seems like it's like a not self-aware parody of another Borderlands movie like a skit almost. And it's like is the way is this the real thing or is it like it just feels it feels like there's like a
00:27:11
Speaker
like a plastic sheen on it. It's like, I, is it going to be serious or is it going to be just out of pocket? I don't think it's going to be serious because the, because the, you know, the game itself isn't serious, but it's, it's not, but it's not, it's not, it's
00:27:31
Speaker
I don't know. It's not Guardians. It's not Guardians humor. It's not it's not Ragnarok. it's it's It's something else. It's more akin to um if Mad Max met the the fascist humor of of of um um Starship Troopers, for example. yeah So it's it's it's it's overt, but it's not trying to be funny. The that the humor comes from its irony or from its yeah bad taste. ummit yeah Does that make sense? Yeah. I'm i'm curious to see how it how it shakes out because it's almost yeah the previews make it seem like it doesn't know what its voice
00:28:16
Speaker
wants to be. Like, is it going to be like a Deadpool 2? Is it going to be like a Starship Troopers? Is it going to be the more like a weird mix of all all of them? like how Or is it going to be? Yeah. Because I think the game is going to be hard to translate in those terms. without It is. It is. ah very It is. awareness um And there there are some tropes like the big monster that they shoot the car through in the trailer. You know, that's that's very Guardians-esque as well, you know, from Guardians 2 kind of thing. ah But yeah, we we'll we'll see. We shall see. And they've got, you know for in terms of video video game conversions or translations, they've got a high bar to to beat with um with Fallout. I thought they did an amazing job with Fallout, so we shall see. Anyway, um the other thing I heard
00:29:08
Speaker
unfortunately for you, mate, is I've heard that they're canceling the Halo TV series after two seasons, which um um I immediately thought of you because I know that... and I'm the only person who enjoyed it. No, you're not. No, you're not. It's got quite a following. it's It really has got quite a following. I think with... I certainly think with open-minded people that, like me, you know, a direct video game translation or again, yeah translation um to a silver screen is really, really tough and they didn't do that. They did their own spin on the story or of their own spin. you know it's it's a different but It's a different universe or a parallel universe. It's just a story, right? and i i certainly loved i so I still haven't finished season one yet, but I certainly love the aesthetics and the the tech porn and the and the and and the and and
00:30:04
Speaker
you know, the ship porn in in it's the production values are amazing. um And it's got, and in in my investigation, it's got a lot of people gutted. And so yeah, I naturally thought of you when i when I heard the news. I heard some, I mean, this could be complete talking out of my butt. But for some reason, I feel like I saw something on social media, which could be completely wrong. That sounds like somebody else was trying to get the rights to it, to like, ah Halo TV and film to like maybe redo it a different way but I don't know somebody more knowledgeable that Michael I'll do more research been it's been in development hell for years though wasn't it didn't Peter Jackson have it at some time at some point as well

I mean, I think pay jackson I think some kind of Halo thing has been in the works for a very, very, very long time. Yeah, at different phases. I remember the whole thing about like, people talking about like district nine spinning out of conversations about potentially doing Halo stuff to varying degrees, which I'm glad it wasn't because I love district nine. I love that movie so much. I did. I love that film as well. It's It'd be interesting. I do hope that somebody goes back in and does. I don't want to direct game adapt adaptation, because I think the game is one of those things where it's you spend so many hours building the story, building narrative. I think that's incredibly difficult to to make into a a movie or a show, kind of like red kind of like a Red Dead. Like, I don't think a Red Dead movie would be good unless you adapted it in a different way, because otherwise it's going to be six hours of riding a horse.
00:31:40
Speaker
It's difficult, but I hope somebody comes back in at some point in time and and and and takes ah takes a stab at it. Well, I know one guy that would be particularly happy about it sitting in front of a TV watching. John Marston writer. I i'd hope that that person would get to be in the film, in the series or film like and as a background character or something. I don't know. Exactly. Exactly. But going back to your point, um, they've kind of made a role for their own back a little bit, um, in that they, you know, they tried to establish character development for a character, for the main character who spent the entire gaming franchise in
00:32:24
Speaker
behind a mask in relative in relative um is the word I hate, anonymity, you know what I mean, in re in relative in in ah in ah in a shroud of secrecy. um And that was the whole that was how the whole attraction of of of um Master Chief was that no one knew who he was. you know There was that there was that ah mysticism about him. um And then you you know you you release ah a TV series and create a um try to create some characters. That's a really tough job, really, a really tough job. So like you, if they do if they do reboot or they do restart or they rethink about it, what I would love to see is the is the ODST stuff. i A, I love that game anyway.
00:33:16
Speaker
um And B, it gives you an extremely broad palette to work from because they are humans. they they're soldiers They're great soldiers, but they are humans. They they are they are unaltered um grunts. and um the ability to take that forward while still have the Spartans, if you like, as this, I wouldn't say God like, but this, this amazing, um, higher echelons of the military. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. there These higher echelons of the military that that may well jump in and save the day on occasion and then disappear off into the
00:33:56
Speaker
off into the yeah the ether. that that would be That would be kind of cool. But no, I felt for you, man, because i I did think, you know from what you were saying, from what I'm hearing from others, that the that series two really, really did start inventing itself quite cleverly. um So I'm gutted for you. So while I've provided some bad news, I've also got some really good news that I i thought you may or may not have picked up on, but um my favourite show of the year so far um has without a doubt been Shogun and um really really overjoyed to find out that Shogun's been nominated for 25 Emmys and I really really hope they get their just desserts and um and do well out of that ah because um
00:34:47
Speaker
For me, it's the most it's the it's the c it's the series this year that has left um a mark on me the longest. you know And that's what I picked up in the news, my friend. So I do I do remember I had some news. One of them was about Deadpool and Wolverine. It's not news, but it's more of a thought on Deadpool and Wolverine. Are you going to see that on opening day or opening day ish? No day after and day after day after day after because I think i'm gonna do I don't know what day it comes out but I think i'm now that you've talked about it like I think i'm gonna go see it like day of or day after because I feel like that's one of those ones where it's gonna have there's gonna be something there's gonna be some stuff in it that is gonna we don't know about yet or maybe it's not widely known yeah I don't know about it and I have a feeling as soon as that movie comes out
00:35:43
Speaker
It's one of those ones that spoilers are going to be impossible to avoid. um And so I feel like, oh, dude, I got to go see it like the first couple of days. I mean, I could I can I'm not hugely on social media as it is, but. I just I don't I'm excited for this film more than I thought I ever would be. And i so I think I'm going to do the same. I think I'm going to go see it when it comes out. Yeah. So that's what I'm done. I'm doing it because like guardian like I know what we're talking about Guardians, we're using it as a reference point earlier on, but I love Guardians. um And um they are the film out of all of the MCU. I can't speak, you know, I don't know how what your MCU experience has been, but mine has been, you know, since since Iron Man kind of shook everyone's world and and turned everything upside down when it came down to what we thought of um
00:36:35
Speaker
of Marvel movies um and where the where the franchise was going I pretty much tried to stay faithful um right up until the point where I would say it was right up until it must be endgame it's got to be endgame yeah it was right let's say right up to endgame and then I've only I've only in the cinema followed up since then, um in the cinema, Spider-Man, because he was my he was my hero when I was a kid, Spider-Man, Guardians, because that space bit kind of, for me, it's like a, I wouldn't say a poor man's Star Wars, but you know what I'm trying to say. It's kind of like, it's like that for me, they're less superheroes and more,

Media Fatigue and Strategic Content Choices

00:37:29
Speaker
ah more Star Wars-y or yeah spacey. so yeah so So it's always been Spider-Man, Guardians, and Deadpool because Deadpool appeals to my sense of humor. um And same with Lucy as well. so um shell chill kind of and that that's So we're going because of that. We're going because of that. um But I am intrigued to be going because I do think it's a really great opportunity to Feige to really reset reset a few things.
00:38:01
Speaker
and take it in in ah in a new direction. or right well yeah You'll appreciate this. I feel like after in-game, I feel like the Marvel, the MCU has been on long-term support. And I feel like they're just now ramping up to start like the next the next big release. It's like, oh, it's all the kind of trickling things that are kind of left over from like the first big MCU push. And now I feel like with Captain America and Deadpool stuff, it's like we're starting a new kind of generation. I think Marvel has gone is gone through or is going through the same kind of shit that that Star Wars went through, albeit a few years later, in that you know it's not a license to print money. um You do have to put some effort into it. There du does need to be um some planning and some forethought into into the direction you're going in. And I think that there is such a thing as MCU fatigue in this in the same way that we've heard.
00:38:53
Speaker
Many folks talk about star wars fatigue and i think that star wars had the upper hand when it came down to launching disney with something like the mandalorian because we've never seen anything like that before certainly not star wars on our tv before um and i think they had the upper hand there and there's a certain amount of um Good will and momentum that's come from that. But even now we're finding in ourselves in a situation that after, you know, after the acolyte, we've got what we've got, um, skeleton crew, then after skeleton crew, weve we know we've got Andor season two, we don't have anything after that. Good God, I hope I hope we've got something. I was gonna say, hey, good God, I hope we got,
00:39:40
Speaker
something to talk about, you know that they that they've got something to talk about when we're in Japan. But the point I'm trying to make is that is that i I think that all media And all studios are struggling with, are relatively rudderless at the moment and are struggling with a sense of purpose and direction. I think this has got every chance of being, if you like, the first out of the gate in a new course. um But yeah, you know, these aren't the pandemic years anymore. You're not going to get the subscribers you had on your streaming services anymore. You're going to have to think and cherry pick your, you know, your big bets.
00:40:23
Speaker
I mean, we saw we saw all of those um Marvel, that that Marvel stuff come out of on Disney Plus you know during the pandemic, starting with who was the first one? Was it? It's the first one. Was it Falcon or was it? um It was Falcon was the first one. Loki loke season one was during the pandemic wasn't it? Yeah, I think so. So had Loki. we had um echo falcon and the winter soldier um see see see after the i haven't seen the last i haven't seen the last three or four seasons series sorry i haven't seen i didn't see miss marvel i haven't seen
00:41:16
Speaker
um She hulk I haven't seen and it's not it's not for any reasons that certain type of people online will will will say is there reasons for not watching it is simply because I felt I Lost the how can I put this I'd lost the appetite to keep up. And to stay and to stay in touch um because I didn't, I didn't care so much anymore. Um, I haven't even been seen Loki. Yeah. For me, the TV stuff is like, it's, it's really exciting when it's part, a part of a larger initiative. Like when you're kind of invested in like just TV for the sake of TV, isn't enough a lot of times. Like, well, I haven't finished Loki season two because it's like, I don't.
00:42:03
Speaker
Like I've struggled with some of the series cause it's like, I mean, I've watched, I think I've watched all of them except for the last of Loki season two. But I think once they start ramping the movies back up again, I'll probably, I'll probably power through it. I think that's what's hard about maybe like Mando season three. until they started announcing like these larger initiatives of like, okay, Ahsoka, and I still believe that it's all, it's all kind of tied a big culminating event like these movies. So it's like, okay. Yeah, I think so. It's a part of something bigger. So I think it's, it's more motivating to kind of stay on the pulse of it. Um, then just whatever. And then just watch. I have a feeling and I have a feeling that so is, um,
00:42:46
Speaker
I think that's the plan for the MCU as well, but it doesn't to me at the moment seem apparent, which is the reason why I've probably dropped off. I mean, I haven't seen the second season of Loki. um And yet in the Deadpool trailer, it looks like that the agency that deals with multiple dimensions and everything, um they play a big part in this in this film that we're seeing next week. And I'm thinking to myself, you know do do i do I want to um Binge it really quick. Binge really quick so that I'm connected. you like I can connect all that. i can i can I can make sure I understand the connective tissue between each of the franchises at the moment. Well, sorry, each of the um the heroes at the moment. And um because I really, really, I'm kicking myself somewhat because I have to a certain degree, because I haven't, I lost interest. I really did lose interest. And um i'm I'm not saying because the the content was no good. I'm saying because I simply
00:43:45
Speaker
There's just too much content. like Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Too much crap in the world. But I also needed a breather and to do other stuff as well. I needed, you know, I need, I needed to, I need a panic cleanser. I don't know. I don't know how you feel about, um, I mean, i i I forever, until the day you guys or someone cuts me off in ah in a cardboard box, I will forever consume Star Wars, you know, whether it's great, whether it's bad, whether it's indifferent, whether it's, you know, what that that's just in my DNA, other stuff. um
00:44:20
Speaker
Um, like MCU, you it it requires a commitment and every now and again, I need a palette cleanser. And for me, palette cleansing is things like, Oh, Shogun, you know, it's totally different, totally different. Or it will be, I don't know. Let's, let's, let's re let's revisit Breaking Bad or, or, or whatever. Um, and we've, and we've talked about it a million times of like, it's also based on like where you are at in your life. and the things you have going on. Like for example, yeah like I cannot bring myself to watch season two of Game of Thrones right now. Like I hear our friends talking about it and how great it is. And it's just like, i it's just not for me at this moment for no particular reason.
00:44:58
Speaker
It's just like, that's fun it's not it's not for me right now. But like, okay, I I'm not fully into the MCU right now. So I'm not interested in Loki. But I have I have been watching some other things like you it your tastes. And it was so much content out there. our Our tastes can ebb and flow. Star Wars is going to be different because I feel like we're deeply entrenched into a community that is very much Consume it as it is released if not sooner. So I think that one that's kind of like the one that I'm always like It's the only one I know when they actually release the episodes and what time of day everything else is like I know roughly of like and I try to ah try to stay on top of it. Yeah, whatever but but yeah Also, I don't know. I don't know about you as well. I'm not that bothered if I'm spoiled as well I'm not I'm not really that bothered whereas with You know until I speak to Josh
00:45:52
Speaker
I won't, first thing in the morning, Josh, Catherine and the other guys are spelled out. I won't speak to anyone or look at any social media. And then after we've recorded, I'll then shut down until I speak to you in the evening, in my evening, sorry, your, you know, your afternoon. Um, but the point being is that I, I, and then I will engage. Um, whereas everything else, like I don't really, I'm okay if I'm spoiled, but it's, it's more, I engage for different reasons. Which goes on actually to our next point, which is I have one more news. I have one more news. Oh, sorry. so Sorry. Sorry. Sorry. A big one that we've completely neglected. San Diego Comic Con starts tomorrow. Uh, and so well, nothing, mean nothing yet. I'm hoping some stuff comes out of it. I mean, there is one thing, but it's, uh, I'm hoping some big news comes out of it.
00:46:44
Speaker
You know what I'm asking, don't you? And oh what? ah Like, did you find anyone? I have somebody who is going to keep an eye out. I mean, I don't I don't expect anybody to go like wait in line or fight. Like, hey, if you see this thing, will you please? get it for me so I don't have to look and tempt to myself with eBay. We better explain for context, folks. So if you've listened to this show at all, you're familiar with me waxing poetic about ah the Micro Galaxy Squadron toys, Star Wars toys, which are the little ah like micro machines kind of glue but action fleet remakes that they've been doing.
00:47:31
Speaker
Um, my, all of my frustrations with that line aside with their chase vehicles and how they'll make the coolest ones limited runs and they're impossible to find and they're always scalped on eBay. They're releasing a San Diego comic con exclusive. Um, I do not know how many, but I, I really want it. Um, I do not want to pay eBay prices for it, but basically it is a, it's. the The packaging is based on like the old Star Wars arcade game. And then it's got an X-Wing and a TIE Fighter inside, but they have ah custom paint schemes.
00:48:08
Speaker
that look like the Star Wars arcade games. So like the TIE Fighter is like black and neon with neon green accents, kind of like it's a cell shaded. And then the X-Wing is like purple, red, and like some other colors to match like the arcade kind of style. um Yeah, the the original the original game, the original game was ah was one of the first vector games. that came out in the arcades and it was um it's it's ah it's it's basically a line drawing of a of a of an-wing and a TIE fighter and these guys have basically um accented the these models um with the colours of the original game and they look sick. If you if you can imagine
00:48:57
Speaker
The best way of explaining it is if you can imagine Star Wars cross with Tron, you'll get close to it because they look really, really, really cool. So, um, this is a, um, and they glow in a black light and that's awesome. Yeah. Yeah. And they glow as well. Yeah. I'm 14 years old again. So, so, um, if any of, uh, many, many, many, many followers are going to, uh, San Diego Comic Con and you do find them.
00:49:28
Speaker
can you Can you help out my mate? And just tap him up and say, they're here. I've found them. Do you want them? He's good for it, I promise you. Yes, I do want them.
00:49:41
Speaker
Sorry, I rail read you again because I thought that's what you were about to say is I've found someone to get these for me. I do. I do have some but I don't want to like put him on the spot and I also. No, of course not. I don't have my hopes up too high because it's like, hey, because I know I wouldn't want somebody to do like I've had people ask me a conventions before and they've asked in similar ways like, hey, if you happen to come across this. Like, and I'll be like, that's fine. And then it's so it's not like this thing is like, will you guarantee me you're going to go and wait in line? Like if it's a line, don't wait on it. Don't do that. But if it's like the opportunity arises and it's like, I can do this without it taking away from my experience, then hell yeah, please do that. But don't. Don't don't overextend or do whatever. So I don't have my hopes up you super, super high. But the there are my feelers are out there and I do really want it. But at the end of the day,
00:50:31
Speaker
I can always just go on eBay or whatever and wait for the prices to come down. Because I'm sure they're going to be astronaut. I think people have already got them out for like 375 bucks. And it's like, but not worth that much to me, but no. Other than that, not at all. So i will so other than ah other than that, Salio, Comic Con coming. We don't have anything on the slate at the moment beyond and or season two. Do you think we might get a little snippet or a little little order of that served to us during Comic Con before the big push, hopefully gobbling next April? I think the majority of I don't think we're going to get
00:51:18
Speaker
I think we're going to get a lot of cool stuff out of San Diego Comic Con, specifically for Star Wars. I don't think we will. This is based on... Do you know when we get a trailer for Skeleton Crew? I don't... I think they'll give more information. I don't think they'll do a trailer at San Diego Comic Con. Or do you think Wednesday 24? Wednesday 24, that's coming up soon as well, isn't it? Well, D23, I'm not sure about 24. D23 is an...
00:51:43
Speaker
Another month, another month or two. um Even there, I don't. I just don't see them. Really, I don't know. This is based on just pure conjecture, like no insider information. It's like I just don't see it ah another Star Wars trailer coming out at either one of these two events. ah I don't know why. I feel like it's going to be Marvel. There will be Marvel heavy stuff. I think it's going to be yeah pushing. Hey, here's also successful ah like D23. I think it's going to be like, hey, here's Wolverine Deadpool stuff and here's Deadpool stuff in the parks. And I think they'll get teasers about more Marvel stuff. because I feel like that's starting to gear up um with the Captain America things and et cetera, et cetera. You see the more investments in the park and the more mixing Marvel with park experiences. I think it's going to be heavy on that.
00:52:36
Speaker
But I feel like Star Wars is going to back burner a little bit until skeleton crew gets closer, which I'm sure will lead to people complaining like post going to crew didn't have the marketing that it's going to have, it's going to have a solo level marketing. I just, I think that's going to be abrupt and sudden and ramp up really quick, really close to when it launches. But I don't, I don't think of either is's coming it's coming out around Christmas time. Isn't it? To me, that says December 24th or 26th. It's like, oh, it's coming in the end of the year. It's like, yeah, one episode. One episode will be released in 2020. I think that's quite smart. I think that's quite smart. Maybe not that late, but certainly early December would be quite smart if it certainly is an Amblin-esque. God, words today.
00:53:27
Speaker
anon a man And Anyway, sorry. um Yeah, if it is an Amblin-esque production or type of show. Alkalite. um
00:53:43
Speaker
i'm old um it will What perfect time of year to come out like that. To come out but ah with ah with ah with a show like that. That would be that would be awesome. Absolutely awesome. I have high hopes for that show. I'm I'm i'm just i I I have the vibe in my feeling. It's like it's going to be a feel good. Yeah. so I'm just I'm I'm I'm very hopeful. And if it's not. Who cares? Like whatever. But I do have high hopes, not expectations. Me too. Hopes not expectations. Me too. So yeah, Sandy Guego Comic Con is coming. I don't know what's going to happen. We'll see. We'll talk about it next week.

TV Series Binge-Watching and Reflections

00:54:23
Speaker
What have you been watching? Anything exciting? Any watching, listening to, did you buy anything? Have you seen anything cool? Yes, I have. Um, yes. Okay. Thank you for asking me first. I've got a lot to go through. So didn't have a lot to talk through last week because we'd only just got back from holiday, but, um, so therefore we, we hammered it. We absolutely hammered it. So we finished the boys. So we're up to date now on the boys season four concluded. I'm not going to spoil it for you. Um, all I will say is I, it's not, I'm not spoiling it. I'm not spoiling it. I've, I've said this to you already. Um, all I'm going to say is all I, all I'm going to do is reaffirm my original comment to you a few weeks back, which was.
00:55:18
Speaker
it's I'm glad they've got an end point in sight or an ending in sight with season five. I enjoyed it a great deal, but ending on a high is a really smart strategy for them. um And I did enjoy season four. I'm just kind of deviating from the comics. I mean, I already had. Yeah, you had to. Yeah, I had to. They're not going that path. It's just so much better. No, I'm I'm on episode five of eight, by the way. So I've been that's what I've been. OK, OK, OK. So very soon you're going to you're going to come across an episode which you're going to think what the.
00:55:58
Speaker
is going on it's it's it's all i can describe as batshit crazy and it's so so funny um for hopefully all the right reasons um i will talk about it when you get past it because it just made me laugh and it's my favorite episode of the entire scene season um finished Derry Girls, I think I said to you, you know, we we always have something light hearted on the background. And after finishing the in between as a few ah few a few weeks ago, Lucy and I have been watching Derry Girls, the um very, very funny, um but very, very, let's call it black comedy. You know, it's very, it's very, very serious comedy um of these um girls brought up in a convent.
00:56:46
Speaker
um
00:56:50
Speaker
but but yeah ah born and brought up in ah and in a convent that are basically surviving the eighty s and ninety s um in in ah Northern Ireland during the Troubles. And the the season also the series itself concludes with the um concludes with the um
00:57:19
Speaker
the signing of the Good Friday Agreement, which is when basically um they but they the Catholics and the Protestants came together and their respective political parties came together, shook hands and decided to vie for peace rather than conflict, which to this day still, I can remember it to this day when it happened. Anyway, yeah, finished that. Saw Beverly Hills Cop, Axel F. on Netflix. And I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was really, really good. Really, really enjoyed it. I didn't go in with any expectations whatsoever. Is it a rinse and repeat of what's come before? Yeah, it is. But I tell you what, it's a rinse and repeat of Beverly Hills Cop 1 and maybe not 2 and 3. And I really, really enjoyed it. And the comedy in it is is is is really quite funny. And then lastly, um
00:58:16
Speaker
I rewatched, I'm gonna read, I'm gonna leave that to the end actually. um Started watching Cobra Kai. That's back out again on on on Netflix, which is great. um Only seen one one of the what episode of the of the new season season ah so far. um And I've i've resurrected, Um, the ones who lived. So this is the, if you remember, this is the walking dead spin-off with, um, Rick and Michonne. Um, I've, I've finally got through two of the episodes. It's only six episodes, so it's not a big deal. Um, so I, I, I promise myself that I will endure and watch it and they're okay. They're okay. It's not.
00:59:07
Speaker
It's still not you know seasons one, two, and three of the of the original of the original series, but it's it's certainly... um more up my alley than perhaps some of the other stuff um in in recent years from that from that franchise still watching house the dragon season two uh i won't ruin it for you um it's good it's good it was heavy which is why which is why i really understand you know if you if you're not in that in that mindset at the moment and in that place to watch it take your time man it's not going anywhere it is very good though but goodness me it um
00:59:43
Speaker
It's exhausting um at the end of it. Still watching Dark Matter. I've only got an episode to go, but this will make you laugh. It's on Apple TV. Apple TV subscription is through my my data plan at work that' so i work on my phone. and um I know about you guys, but we get over here, we can get benefits or apps with depending on which data plan you're on. and I flipped my service, my ancillary service on my phone from Apple TV to, of course, Roaming.
01:00:18
Speaker
I was on holiday and I've got to wait a couple of weeks until I can flip it back. So unfortunately dark matter. I've only got one episode to go and I can't finish it yet because I don't have Apple TV yet for at least a couple of weeks. What I've been listening to has been pretty inspiring. I've been getting back into the sack off show. Um, and I, you know, when she, when it lands, it went lands really, really well. Recently, she interviewed Ashley Eckstein. Um, you know, big fan of Ashley's from, uh, her affiliation with everything. Star Wars from, um, uh, obviously the Clone Wars Rebels and indeed, um, what else was there?
01:01:05
Speaker
Clone Wars Rebels and Tales of Jedi, um but also everything she'd done for the fandom in itself, you know the parks, her own her own um um clothing line, et cetera, et cetera. But what really what I really enjoyed about the episode was um her focus, her own focus on mental health. And the fact that her entire kind of clothing brand was um and her inspiration to be there the figurehead or the the the um the spokesperson that she is today was really about pushing back against bullies and in particular
01:01:40
Speaker
um the mental well-being of young people and that ah that I thought was it was a phenomenal episode and then recently um the last the last episode I've just listened to was Simon Peck so um you know many people like him many people love him um he's a he's very much a yeah ah mixed bag when it comes down to his following but I followed Simon's career since he was ah a young ah young comedian in the UK and um Um, with himself and, um, Edgar, i call name of the director's name Edgar Wright and Nick Frost when they got together and, you know, one of the most.
01:02:24
Speaker
one of my most memorable and and and favorite comedy series was back in the 90s called Spaced, where they but the three of them got together and created this kind of sense of humor that wasn't it wasn't overt, it was very much of its tie its sorry it' made much of the time, and it wasn't, shall we say, alternative comedy that we saw in the late 80s. It wasn't in your face, it was it was subtle, it was um ironic. it was um It was great. It was really, really good. And um so I listened to him and he spoke an awful lot about his family, about his success, about his Hollywood stuff. And obviously the likes of people like Tom Cruise came into the conversation, which kind of lost my attention a little bit. But um ultimately it was really about his his his roots. And um I didn't realize he still he's still quite grounded in the UK. He lives in North London. um And I kind of thought he was pretty much
01:03:19
Speaker
have been ah um assimilated by Hollywood, but that's not the case. But it's a good one. And then lastly, or sorry, second to last, I haven't read anything, but I have started again, because I'm feeling flat from not being on a holiday um i bought a whole bunch of graphic novels for my next holiday so we're going away for a very very small break in november which seems like an all a long long way again um so but i've bought a bunch of graphic novels to uh a uh to give you something to look forward to and and b stimulate give me some stimulation while i'm feeling so crap being back at work um
01:03:58
Speaker
And then lastly, I was just going to say, I did promise you, or I did say to you that I was going to do a rerun of the acolyte, um, back to back. And I did that on Sunday. So Lucy was busy with her family and I left the place to myself, um, for that day. And I literally burnt through the entire season in one go on Sunday. And it's a very, very different experience. I know I've kind of given you a hint of as already on, on on our discord as to what I thought, but it's a very, very different viewing experience. And in many ways, so much more powerful if you see it back to back, because those, those longer, you know, we saw the flashback episodes in ah episode three and seven, episode three and seven, we saw those flashback episodes and they took the entire episode up, which.
01:04:54
Speaker
you know And you're thinking to yourself, I want to get back to the the here and now, and I want to get back to the action. What's going on? you know Have we wasted an episode? But they're so much more powerful if you watch it back to back. um If you do watch it back to back, I would say not the negative side, but and and an observation that I also made was that there's an awful lot of spurious stuff or or stuff that doesn't really add context to the story or the progression of the story. You mentioned it a couple of weeks ago about Pip. Pip being a delightful you know merchandising opportunity um for for the bit, but but what so what purpose did did Pip serve in the story? Very, very little.
01:05:38
Speaker
when you spend time characterizing something like that as opposed to using normal tools. yeah And it got me thinking at the end of it, good God, this would have been an amazing movie, an absolutely amazing movie where you've got kind of like, and I ah know I'm repeating myself and I apologize for that, but you've got this amazing buildup as to where we are. and You know, you're asking yourself the question, you know, what is going on here? And then you have, these these flashback moments, which could have been spread, shall we say, more conservatively, but thinner across the entire movie itself. A little bit, I know I'm repeating myself, a little bit like Glass Onion or or Knives Out, where you get different people's perspectives. I'd have loved to have seen it in the cinema. I'd have loved to have seen it in the cinema in a make in a more condensed manner.
01:06:33
Speaker
Yeah, there is some stuff there that you could cut out. There's an awful lot of... There's some pedestrian moments, for example, they spend an awful lot of time in Coruscant, which is great to see, but does it actually add to the add to the add to the tension or indeed progress the plot? They they spend some time... that i said to I said at the end of season, sorry, episode two, they go back to Coruscant and then go on to go and try and find Kalnaka. Whereas if they knew where he was already, they could have just shot to Kalnaka and you could have cut out that that section and Coruscant, which was amazing to see, especially when you're talking about Jackie and the training that she was going through, but did it progress the story? And so while I was watching it, I kept asking myself the question,
01:07:27
Speaker
How would I improve it? And I wouldn't ah i can't improve it. it's I really, really enjoyed it. But a little bit of subtle editing could have quite easily got this in in the cinemas. And I've really enjoyed it. Really, really enjoyed it. See, i don't want to I don't want to see it go to the cinemas because I think that's you're cutting out a lot of cut out a lot of content. and i can I don't want to see it go to... like two movies. But I do I do wish we'd bring back the this this show is really I and did enjoy I enjoyed it a lot. It makes me wish we'd bring back the day of like the mini series almost like whatever whatever they called them like the micro series where it's like instead of
01:08:09
Speaker
eight episodes or 10 episodes, 30 minutes, 40 minutes, 20 minutes, whatever, like do do like an three hour and 15 hour and 20 minute long, like micro movies, like make the format more interesting. Like more engaging, more of a commitment, but not a three hour movie, like, or a two hour movie. Do like an hour, 15 minutes. Do like, like almost do like three acts, almost like a play, like a real, a really long play. Like, oh, here's act one where it's setting everything up and then a flashback, whatever.
01:08:43
Speaker
act two, then all of a sudden, now you're getting into you're introducing like, some of the the major arcs and the conflicts and whatever, then act three is the the chase, the chase and the conclusions and things like that. I think that'd be an interesting way. I wish like I know there's business sides of it. We're like, and there's like, a entertainment, yeah like union and kind of things that they're also playing towards, it was like, oh, you have a certain number of episodes, you get syndicated, yada, yada, yada. Like they're they're playing within those boundaries. But I do wish there was a way that you could make it more tailored to the story that they're trying to tell in the content. Like I do think I got a three parter would be an interesting way to cut this. Hmm.
01:09:29
Speaker
So it's not like the week, the week, the week thing. Um, just cause I think that was some same, same points that you made basically. like But yeah, yeah it I just, I mean, don't get me wrong. I, I lapped it up the way it was. yeah I was just, um, I was just being. just just curious as to what I mean, I was almost kind of asking myself the question, you know, what would you do differently? You know, how would you get this onto the silver screen? Because it's quite interesting. I was listening to these scruffies on Sunday night and um but sorry, on Monday, because they recorded Sunday night. And it was um one of the things that Kev said really resonated me with me is that is that his biggest concern is
01:10:11
Speaker
is getting Star Wars back in the movie theaters, because it has to land, it has to make money. And it got me thinking, and and that's kind of kind of one of the one of the things that got me thinking about you know what would i how would you get the Mandalorian in cinema? How would you get a Zoka in cinema? How would you be able to land? And like and and that hence the reason why I thought about, obviously, the latest entertainment, because I'd just seen it. and um And there's a few other things I would do. Like, for example, I wouldn't perhaps have given away the, the, the, I wouldn't have cameoed, um, Plagueis so early in, in, in episode eight, yeah maybe if it was, I would have actually stuck that at the end, even after, after the Yoda moment to a certain degree to give
01:11:06
Speaker
to give the audience the the surprise of there is something more than then the And come here. So, um, but yeah, no, I really did enjoy it second time round. And I implore anyone that, that, that, that even half enjoyed it the first time round to watch it back to back because, um, it's very, very powerful. And like I said, the main thing for me, the weakest episodes for me up until now have been the the flashbacks and good God, they, they had context and they were grounded. Uh, when I was watching it in context to the, or sorry, back to back with the other episodes.
01:11:45
Speaker
Cool man. So yeah, that's been my that's been my week of televisual and at pleasure. What about yourself? Have you been watching anything, reading anything, listening to anything? I have not been reading anything. um I have been watching The Boys. I've just started like two days ago. I've just been binging through it. Sweet. I think I'm at the tail end of episode five right now. um one thing One thing I do like about the show is that like you can tell like it doesn't take itself too seriously. Like there's times where it just doesn't care about the the canon or the lore too much where it's like
01:12:25
Speaker
Yeah, we're just going to, we're like, I don't mean this in a negative way. I mean, it's like, I like this about where it can just be the content and moving forward. It's like, well, how did we, how did we get here? Like, it doesn't matter. Like just keep, just keep up. And so I like that they're, they're not getting bogged down in the details. It's refreshing. No, no, no, no. And I also think that I love the, I love the, you know, I love the creative team there anyway, because they don't, I mean, to your point, they don't give a toss about their, um, uh um at canon per se yeah but also their their social media prowess i think is on a par with leslie headland i think they're brilliant i think they're absolutely brilliant and because i'm sure you know that this season has come down with an awful lot of flack from certain types of people oh it's on it is it's it's it's blatant and on the nose and i love every minute of it it's like
01:13:15
Speaker
But but it's it's it's like the creators are like, did you not suss this out between seasons one and three? Why did you have to wait till four to work out what this is about? Anyway, but there but the but the. The the the no fuss given approach about their social media presence is something I respect. Yeah, I really do. And good fun, though. So I'll be I'll be done with that in like the next day. I'll probably finish wrap that up. Um, one thing that was interesting is we had we had a hiker stay over the weekend. And through some part of conversation, it came out that like Madison had never seen the movie Swingers ah with young Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn. And so we we popped that in. And I don't think I've seen that movie in, God, 20 years.
01:14:10
Speaker
And it's just, it it was jarring how much, I'm like, I forgot how much, like, your money, baby, baby, your money. Like, I forgot how much of that movie is that. And it's just, it's just a movie of a time. And it's just, ah I enjoyed it thoroughly. Yeah. And I it's taken me. The three, three or four days to stop talking like that. um And also to stop replying to everything as high as his neck, his neck, you leave a message. Just it's such it's such a good movie and like for what it is, like, no, it's not cinema masterpiece or anything like that, but just. It's just a funny, funny viewpoint. I mean, it's it's crude at points. It didn't age the best, but
01:15:00
Speaker
It's just a, it's just a funny movie and a good watch. So I was glad I got to watch that. Um, another thing happened. So this isn't mine, but this did come in, you know, I got the, the Andor record. Oh,

Home Projects and Personal Hobbies

01:15:17
Speaker
target holy grail. The target exclusive orange vinyl plus a poster that is accounted for, but it did come in and it's going to come come with me to Japan probably or whenever. for one of our friends who who requested it. um And another thing this is this is this is my next project. So I'm tired of the cats always trying to beat down my door when I'm recording a podcast or working. So I picked up a
01:15:44
Speaker
a cat, a French doors that you install on your door to my office and it'll feel like they open so you can like lock them. Wait, how did I do this? Oh, there it is. And so I can open it. like You I drill a hole in my door and these little French doors installed so I can lock them out and see them or I can open it so they can come in and out freely if I want them to. Yeah. OK, so a normal a normal cat flap was not sufficient. ah you you you You bought some patio door. you You bought some French doors for the for the cat. There was a reason I got the French doors. I think it was because I wanted to go to lock it from. I wanted to be able to lock it from both sides, I believe, is what the issue was. But then for some reason, it's like an Amazon Prime thing, too, i was like.
01:16:34
Speaker
that I was going to say, in fact, they do look rather special. I mean, I hope the cats are very, very appreciative because they're not going to be. They're going to be jerks about it. And you know what? But that's my role. I always tell Madison, I'm like, it's tough being the bottom of the totem pole. You know, you're surrounded by dirt, but you know, you hold everybody else up. and Yeah. Yeah. It's it's really it's really a tough job. But I know that feeling, man. ah outside of that, I've been catching up on the sack off show. And I think your point about it being like when it hits, it hits. When when it doesn't, it just doesn't. And so it's like if people if people are going to pick up on it, which I do recommend, I do recommend people listen to it. But if there's an episode you're just like, you're not fine feeling just don't like just just skip it. But like I do like to go.
01:17:23
Speaker
I was going to say, if you don't like it, skip it, but do persevere with her pod because they're awesome absolute gems within her backlog. There are some gems. I keep talking about Kevin Smith. The way he dominated and interviewed her in the end was phenomenal. Amazing guy. Yeah, i thought that I thought that one was really good. The Seth Green one was really good. um Yeah, there's a couple there's a couple in there that are that are really, really interesting. And there's a couple of them that aren't. um and you know I can't remember the name of the individual who was in them, but I was like, that was a weird episode. But it's good. I do enjoy the pod. um What else? I think that's i think that's mostly it. um Trying to just quickly scan through my head. Yeah, that's about it.
01:18:18
Speaker
Yeah, we're going to be on a drought now, so we need to start pulling up. you know start start but as As I said earlier on, or i hinted towards earlier on, we've got some irons in the fire. But um I think what we'll start doing is giving each other homework over the coming weeks so that we can start um having a either either we either we find a new series that we haven't seen together. Oh, by the way, have you seen Blue Eye Samurai yet? I have not, it's on deck and I also have, um, three body problem on deck as well. Those are both queued up. Okay. Okay. I'm going to do some homework while over the next week or over the next few days. Sorry. I'm going to come back to you with a suggestion of something that we both haven't seen that can become our, I'm not going to call it filler, but our, our, our,
01:19:15
Speaker
review, if you like, yeah to replace Star Wars content while we're not there while we're not while it's not there. um And we'll start landing some of these irons that we have, toasting away as well. Good. But I am i am looking forward to some more Star Wars. I felt very, very well fed at the end of last week. um And a break will be very well fed. A break will be nice. A break will be nice. But, um, yeah, December seems a long, long way away at the moment. Blank and you'll miss it. There's going to be, adding on and there's some cool content coming out that I think is going to hold us over until then. So I think it'll be nice to to be able to take a step away. I'm excited for the Marvel stuff coming out. I think that's going to be a nice little holdover.
01:20:04
Speaker
um And then like rings of power and a couple other things come out in the next month as well. Time time is already yeah time time is or oh that' a good point um time is already flying by. i mean it wasn't it wasn't It was only a couple of days ago that our buddy Chris over at the um ah The scruffy's reminded me that it's only a few weeks we're only a few weeks away now till when I hook up with them again. We're going toy hunting again, going to another another another toy fair um up north and um I think both of us have got quite the shopping list. Oh, that's that's a good point actually. i've um yeah ah yeah i've When we talk next week, i'll I'll show you some more things I've been buying.
01:20:49
Speaker
I've been by i'm I'm not I'm not collecting. I'm not collecting. I've kicked that habit. Hopefully I have underneath your chair or something. no Yeah, yeah. Also, there's some nails to to to pin put it down. um But no, I'm not collecting, but I am. I am buying the occasional. I'm cherry picking the occasional piece of plastic crap, which what does that even mean? I'm sorry. I'm not addicted. I do it recreationally. It's like, what are you talking about? I'm not buying a line, I'm not buying, I'm not buying, I'm not in any cut-ups, you know, I'm not in that kind of, gotta catch them all. You're not being a completionist, you're not being, and i'm a like, you're not going to kill it. No, I'm not And I'm not really looking at, I'm not really looking at, you know, that Black Series or Hasbro or all Lego or anything like that, I'm just buying the most spurious of things at the moment. Hence the reason why every now and again you might get a text from me saying, hmm, shipping on this is shit, if you see this,
01:21:48
Speaker
in your travels over in the over in the US. Could you grab one for me? um So you're going to see a lot more of that coming your way because there is some bizarre. You're more of a bespoke collector. you know Exactly. Exactly. You don't just get anything and everything off the street just because it's there. You're not getting raw duty to see 3PO salt and pepper shakers in a playing card. You're getting the cool stuff. Exactly. And I can justify it because every time I kind of clean these shelves, I always make a little bit of a gap for new things to fill. So in other words, I kind of push the collection ever so slightly closer together. You can see my feed just like I can see yours. You're preaching to the choir, my friend. Yeah. So more to come on that as well. But cool. You know, great, great. There's a lot to look forward to. A lot to look forward

Buddy, thank you for recording with me again. I love this. This is my therapy. I love it. Absolutely love it. So thank you, Buddy. I love it too. I love that I could just burn a Wednesday. So it's a good little long lunch in the middle of the day. I look forward to it every week. Uh, I don't know why I always worry like, what are we going to talk about? There's no acolyte alkali alkali. All you got to do is stick us in a room together or stick us anywhere together and we'll find somebody to talk about. Never going to worry about that. yeah We can, we can have a whole, we can have a whole episode about how to request cabs from front desk receptionist. Then in the UK, we can, there you go. Put it on the list. Another topic.
01:23:42
Speaker
Another topic. Doing doing things the hard way. This week on preserving your decking with Sean. Dude, take us out. I can do that. Thank you, everybody, for listening. Thank you to everybody who reached out ah emails, direct messages and stuff. Yeah. um Last week when I foobard the episode, um Cheers to all the people who I didn't know listened, but then came out of the woodwork with well-intentioned. I don't mean that like in a bad way. But thank you. I really do appreciate it. Thank you. i It's nice positive feedback that ah that people are listening and that they enjoy it. That's really cool. um If I do it again, don't hesitate. Just ring me right up again.
01:24:34

um keep keep ah keep ah Keep an eye out for your mental health, reach out to a friend, ask them how they're doing. It's ah it's never, it doesn't that cost anything and it really means a lot to everybody. But yeah, until next week, I've had a great time. My good friend Andy, he's awesome. and You know where to find us, joshilland.com, blah, blah, blah. Until next week.
