This is Beat Our Quest, an improvised comedy role-playing podcast using the Kids on Bikes system. And even though you can't see us, we are all wearing our helmets.
00:00:23
Speaker
Ivana Maria Mendez Bubble as Chad Boers. Tucker Dally Johnston as Alfie Towers. Nate Valentine as Janet Cromwell.
The Beeper Baby Plot
00:00:38
Speaker
Last time, the group decided that the best course of action was going to be to prevent other people from having an interest in beeper babies. Janet went home and discovered that her little sister had gotten a beeper baby and she did whatever she could to get rid of it, throwing her own away.
00:00:54
Speaker
um The party also decided that their best way to make beeper babies unavailable at school is to make them really unpopular. They did this by then picking the most popular girl at school and trying to convince her that beeper babies are bad.
00:01:10
Speaker
I forget what you actually said. Trying to kill her. Right. They're trying to kill her is what it actually was. Bad and scary. yeah And scary. So you broke into her room in beeper baby costumes.
Debate Over Tournament Entry
00:01:21
Speaker
scared her and then ran out and the next day at school there she was talking about how lame they were um but unfortunately at the end of that that was not before you found out that there was going to be a huge beeper baby tournament the next day at gameosaurus rex well at least we know that jared won't be there because he'll probably be in prison
00:01:42
Speaker
Or maybe tied up in the basement of girly swirlies after what he did to Chad. Okay, I told Alice not to share what she was going to do with him. Yeah, when that flyer says, tournament of beeper babies, does it mean that we have to use the beeper babies to win?
00:02:07
Speaker
Or is it just if you have a beeper baby, you pay with it, and then it's just a regular tournament fight to the death? Probably the former. Probably the first one that you said, Chad. First one, thank Yeah.
00:02:23
Speaker
Yeah. I mean, we've ah we've done a really good job of figuring out what's going on, but this is this is really bad, guys. I think we've got to go there and put an end to this once and for all, because if they have a bunch of kids fighting in the tournament, the first time that ah things go south, he kids are going to be hurting each other again.
00:02:45
Speaker
Do we need to enter the tournament to stop this or like, can we protest outside of it? Well, I, I sort of threw out my beeper baby last night. Uh, so maybe we should just go and, you know, if maybe they're selling them or something, I have some money saved up from my allowance.
Past Failures and New Plans
00:03:04
Speaker
So I think that's kind of our only option.
00:03:07
Speaker
You guys don't have beeper babies, right? Nah, Chad doesn't do well in protest settings. And i agree. Huh? How many protest settings have you been to, Chad? Three. Three?
00:03:18
Speaker
What were they in sequential order? In sequential order, the first time was because they didn't want to give us recess in first grade. Because i I ate the pizza that they brought in for the for the pizza party. ate all of it.
00:03:31
Speaker
So I protested by myself outside of the classroom. Um, that was the first one. but you You really want me to go on? Okay, that's fine. I get the feeling all three of them are going to be pizza related.
00:03:46
Speaker
The second one was because they only wanted to bring cheese pizza for the fourth grade pizza party. And so I was in protest because pepperoni pizza deserves representation too.
00:03:59
Speaker
ah And then the third one was because they weren't paying teachers enough and we protested. But then ah all the teachers got a suspension for the summer and they didn't actually get paid for the month of July.
00:04:13
Speaker
So told you all of them ended poorly. Wow. That is that's fair. I was worried that you didn't understand what a protest was. But that that last one, that that's that's real. Teachers wage.
00:04:26
Speaker
Teachers wage. Okay, so we should try to go to Gamosaurus Rex tomorrow, see what's going on, and then maybe Janet needs to buy another one. And I think you're the one who knows the most about Beeper Babies, and oh man, you can freaking talk to them, right? You have to be the one. You're you're a Beeper Baby gal, because you're gonna you gotta be the one. I don't think that Chatterai would really do i do very well in the fights.
00:04:56
Speaker
yeah Yeah, I guess I'm the only one who's fought one, although there's literally no skill involved. You just press a button. But yeah, i we should all go together, though, and figure out what's going on. You know, if there are fights, it's always good to have Chad on hand to to break it up.
00:05:11
Speaker
And yeah, I think we should just go and see. don't know, Janet. I don't know if I'm going to be useful, because last time I clearly was not useful enough. So law I don't know.
00:05:24
Speaker
I don't know I'm going to be useful for you. i don't know if I can protect you like I thought I could. Chad, you're going to great. And I'm going to kind of pat Chad on the, don't know, the tricep. That's a weird way to describe But, you know, I grab his arm and be like, Chad, you're going to great.
00:05:38
Speaker
don't Don't let what happened the other day get you down. Okay, Chad? All right. Means a lot coming from you, Janet. Thank you. um So
Convincing Janet's Sister
00:05:44
Speaker
that's okay, Slim. Let's have you guys just cut back home. If you have any activities for the night, Chad or Alfie, you have anything you want to do at home? and Change. You say change. Change.
00:05:52
Speaker
Yeah. I would like to check on Jeannie and make sure that my mom took her beeper baby. You come home. Your mom is gone. She's working for the night. But you do see that the door to Jeannie's room is closed.
00:06:05
Speaker
And that's unusual for her. She's usually keeping it open. ah Can I quiet? Not stealthily, but like, you know, in case she's asleep or something, because it's, well, it's not late at night, is it? It's just like 4 p.m.
00:06:19
Speaker
Yeah, you know she's in there. Then I'm going to fucking open the door. so hey, Jeannie. ah She turns and looks and tells you, just get out. Jeannie, are you mad at me because of because mom made you get rid of your beeper baby?
00:06:31
Speaker
course. I'm really sorry that I had to do that. You know, i was just looking out for you. And, you know, it's kind of the same reason why I always make sure that you wear a helmet when you ride your bike or make sure you do your homework because sometimes we have to do things that aren't fun because they're better for us, Jeannie.
00:06:50
Speaker
I trust you. So mom made you throw it out? Yeah, she came in here and took it. Okay, bye.
00:06:58
Speaker
I'm gonna go in my room and do the homework. Or something. May I ask, uh, I just wanna chat with my dad as I'm coming home real quick. Hey, Dario.
00:07:11
Speaker
hey there, sport. I have a question for you. I know you don't believe in, uh, in like punishments and stuff when students are misbehaving. I know you just like make them do laps.
00:07:24
Speaker
That's, that's just fun. Um, but. And that's not really a punishment. That's good for your body. Yeah, I know. I know. I agree. I agree. Everyone should be able to run 10 laps in under two minutes. Um, Jesus Christ.
00:07:37
Speaker
Have you confiscated any of those, you know, the little battle thingies that the the other kids have been using? Not me.
00:07:49
Speaker
You know, i don't like that stuff. But do you by any chance...
Tournament Chaos at Gameosaurus Rex
00:07:54
Speaker
Did you take any of them? Were they using them too much in class? Chet, make a charm roll of eight.
00:08:00
Speaker
Okay. oh Well, that's... By the way, my charm is ten, i would like to clarify. So I don't know how well this is going to go. Roll a d10.
00:08:12
Speaker
That, oh, well, no, that's a one. ah oh Not a six. He goes, well, firstly, Chad, if I were to confiscate anything from any of the kids, you know, it would go right to the school. So, yeah and I understand what you're after. I'm not going to start stealing things from kids and giving it to you anymore. You know how much trouble I got in that one time when you were reading those magazines and such.
00:08:35
Speaker
I really wanted to know how to change a tire, Dad. And like, I know you've taught me, but I wanted to be able to to have it with me just in case I forgot.
00:08:46
Speaker
Yeah, alright, I believe you. But let me be clear, no seven-year-old would need to change a tie. I don't know maybe maybe I was robbing a bank and I needed to find a fast escape, and then and then the car I took... Now you see why that's not a good excuse for anything, right, Chad? I see.
00:09:05
Speaker
i see how robbing a bank is not a good excuse. You guys make your way to Game of Soros Rex and you see this huge banner that's been set up. um There's a bunch of like vans and stuff that's is clearly being produced at some level by the Heart and Hand Corporation.
00:09:18
Speaker
You make their your way in there. You see there's a whole sign up. There's a bunch of tables and things around the room. These big cardboard standees of ah people's favorite beeper babies. um There's even a desk where people are able to buy a new beeper baby if they're interested in competing in the tournament.
00:09:32
Speaker
And you see ah there's a woman who clearly stands out amongst all the crowd. ah She's wearing a really clean suit that's been ah like like very sharp shoulder pad kind of look. um She stands really tall, straight black hair.
00:09:48
Speaker
um And she's clearly the representative um from the Heart and Hand Corporation, possibly the designer that had been mentioned. Janet, the one thing you notice as you're looking around the room You see her little sister is there. She's been dropped off by her mom.
00:10:04
Speaker
And she has taken the beeper baby that you threw away last night in the garbage. No! And took it for herself. So her mom took hers, but she took yours that you threw away. the stakes of stakes have risen. So you see her, and she goes wide-eyed, not having expected you to be there.
00:10:25
Speaker
And she goes, what are you doing here? Jeannie, I'm here to talk to the developer. cant Can i just, like, grab it out of her hand? Can I try to snatch it from her? ah You can. Make a flight roll of six.
00:10:38
Speaker
Flight with an L? Yes, flight.
00:10:43
Speaker
To, like, try to snatch it. That was an eight. So you grab it on her wrist and you're like, you're struggling with it. um And you hear a fight breaking out. um You do kind of start to un-open it off, but you see her start yelling and she starts going like, she's taking it from me!
00:10:58
Speaker
Judge! Judge! um And you see some guy come over with like a little ref outfit. I'm going approach them to try to help but try to help out and distract the situation. Just genie, genie, genie, my little enemy.
00:11:16
Speaker
We meet again. They're bullying me too. Oh, gee, stop it. You said that once we were out of the house, we could do a push-up competition. Uh, this is my little sister, and this is my little sister, and she stole this from me, and she's not allowed to be here.
00:11:33
Speaker
Mr. Referee, who's probably, like, two years younger than me. so Hey, I had to shave for this. Oh, that's a deep voice. You guys are arguing and talking, and eventually you can tell that you are clearly the authority figure, and they accept that.
00:11:46
Speaker
um The woman comes over and introduces herself as Tabitha Mealy. Folks, I don't want to have any issues here. I respect families and things like that. You know, it's your choice to, you know, if she's not old enough to participate that, but i want you to know, she spent money to participate in this tournament, and it's a non-refundable agreement.
00:12:03
Speaker
Maybe you can just let her... watch from the side or something like that. I'd feel bad to take away this opportunity from this kid. I don't care if she watches, but she is not competing and she is not wearing that beeper but baby.
00:12:16
Speaker
Hell, M.G. Nailed it. Maybe we can introduce her into more youth-friendly merchandise or something like that. And she gestures her to a table, and they've got like little stuffies and things like that.
00:12:26
Speaker
And Genie runs over to go play with some of those. We'll meet again, Genie. I want to talk to Tabitha. Tabitha Mealy? I want to look her in the eye and go,
00:12:39
Speaker
Sometimes it's hard to make kids obey because they always want to fight. But maybe if they consumed more literature, they would be better.
00:12:55
Speaker
Right? Don't you agree? She pauses for a second and gives you a long, cold, icy stare. And then she leans down so she's staring you face in the face.
00:13:05
Speaker
And under her breath she asks... Where did you hear that? Hear what? I'm just talking about my belief system and how we should raise our youth, ma'am. She smiles, and it's cold and unsettling.
00:13:18
Speaker
It goes almost ear to ear, and you see her lips start to turn white from the intensity of it all. Eventually, she stops and she ruffles your hair and goes, You're a smart kid. You should compete today.
00:13:30
Speaker
Maybe you'll win. And she hands you a beeper, baby. Oh, I couldn't. I am, um, I'm actually Amish. um I don't believe in electronics.
00:13:45
Speaker
And you you came, so you came into a video game store. There was a loud commotion. I just wanted to make sure everyone was um ah obeying the Lord as we all should. i have to go talk to Jebediah now.
00:13:58
Speaker
was about to call you little Jebediah.
00:14:03
Speaker
We know two things about Amish people. They make preserves. oh I'll take it. I'll take it. If he doesn't want it, I'll take it.
00:14:15
Speaker
She looks over to you, still has that smile and it doesn't fade, but it seems like it's losing that unearthly intensity. And she adds, great. Enjoy it.
00:14:26
Speaker
And she hands you fiddlesticks, the one that you had been dressed as a few days ago. You really have to work on the name for this one, ma'am. The name really doesn't match the image. Just want to let you know.
00:14:37
Speaker
was thinking of a wooden board with a face because it has the word sticks and sticks are part of a tree and boards come from trees. I don't think you get what we're going for, but I am thrilled to have you as a participant.
00:14:55
Speaker
Great. Thanks, suit. ah She looks back to Alfie as you walk away from her. She's staring at you from a distance. Something ah like you've clearly rattled her.
00:15:05
Speaker
o Eventually, she walks up to the little ceremony table. They've got like a little ah trophy set up for everyone. I just want to thank everyone for attending the first Beeper Baby Battle Tournament.
00:15:20
Speaker
Henceforth to be known as the Beeper Baby Battle Blitz. God damn it. Yeah, that's going to go great. All of you have a great chance to be a part of something unlike anything else.
00:15:32
Speaker
So we have a big lottery pool. You'll be putting your hand in and taking who you will be competing against. So please, can we have our first participant come down?
00:15:43
Speaker
And she stares. Alfie, are you participating? I forget. Chad took the one... that I had that she was gonna give to me. Alfie, why didn't you take it? Why didn't I take it? Yeah. Because um I'm physically small and that woman terrifies me and she looked at me um with those with those dead eyes.
00:16:05
Speaker
Oh, her eyes aren't dead. Yeah, she's like a shark. i agree. I mean, I i i can do it I can be the one to participate. I can do it. But you you guys got to watch my back because I think she might try to, you know, kidnap me or something or other horrible things people do.
00:16:26
Speaker
I'm just scared to use it because I'm scared of my own strength, Alfie. You listen to me, Captain. you You never have to be scared of who you are.
00:16:37
Speaker
or anything about what you do. You just gotta to believe in yourself. I don't wanna be a Jared, Alfie! I don't wanna be a Jared! Not gonna be a Jared! You just protect your neck! You protect that sweet neck!
Disruptive Strategies
00:16:49
Speaker
Can do. I can. And I will. Janet, i'm worried about you fighting with Iron Might. Mighty... i Iron Might. and Yeah. I did it right the first time.
00:17:02
Speaker
Because that's that's the one that makes people go crazy and throw the time. You know what i mean? Sorry, I didn't catch that. I mean, last time it didn't affect me. I just heard the the voice in my head. So I think I'm probably in a queer, but... think you're immune because you had such a good save, if I recall. Oh. Shoot. Shoot.
00:17:21
Speaker
While you're all talking, they call out a couple of names for the people who've signed up. ah You hear Clyde Mitchell Harris ah from that first day of school. And you also hear Alice Bernadetto Jr. who are going to be competing today.
00:17:33
Speaker
No! Not baby Alice! And they to the little table and they're fighting and things are going. And as you guys are talking, names are getting called out and people are going through... I just want to thank you all for being such wonderful consumers.
00:17:45
Speaker
And I wanted to make a special announcement for anyone here competing in this tournament. If you purchase two Beeper Babies, we're going to give you an additional two for free as a gift from us, from the Heart and Hand Corporation.
00:18:00
Speaker
And people go berserk. They start frantically looking around for the shelves that for any beeper babies that could possibly be for sale still in the store. Guys, we got to put an end to this. I don't know how, but this is this is making things worse. Our plan with Trixie Steele, everything's going to be for nothing if people buy four beeper babies today. i agree.
00:18:23
Speaker
Janet, I know you've said no to this idea before. But maybe this time it could work. What if we burn them all
00:18:40
Speaker
Well, I don't think that plan works right now because we are in the middle of the mall. You want to start a fire in the mall? I forgot that fire sometimes can't be contained.
00:18:55
Speaker
What if we try to find the power for the store and turn it off so this whole tournament shuts down and they can't process anyone's... ah cash purchases with the cash register because the power is out and credit cards probably aren't as ah ubiquitous because it's 1990 something metagaming for a second don't the credit cards in the 90s they just have the like ink thing they just like go like that to like just take an imprint of it and then they save it
00:19:27
Speaker
the good chunk chunk thing and it's just was more likely people wrote checks well you can't write checks in the dark guys is a perfect plan i like how by metagaming you meant like getting into the nitty-gritty on the history of credit card oh yeah yeah As you guys hear this, eventually, I forget, is it Chad or Alfie who's going to play?
00:19:47
Speaker
Because your name is about to be called. Chad. What? youre Your name is called. didn't give her my name! You're going playing... Well, you when you signed up, you hear your name, and you're playing against a woman named Betsy Pears. Oh, easy. Easy. Based on that name, you got this.
00:20:08
Speaker
I can take Betsy. Very sheepish, big owl-like eyes behind glasses. And she's like, I'm just very excited to be here. This is the most important day of my life. Nice to meet you, Chad. You're going down, Betsy.
00:20:18
Speaker
ah While this is going on, this is your guys' chance. Chad is up there on the tournament stage. is there anything you guys want to do to try to stop this? Yeah, I want to try to find the the main circuit breaker for games are Game of Source Rex.
00:20:33
Speaker
um Let's have you make a ah ah brains roll of eight. Can I... ah What do have to do to be cool under pressure? It's just an adversity token.
00:20:44
Speaker
I don't think I have any, and if I do, I haven't been paying attention, so I'm gonna actually roll a die for once in my life, and get a 12. Whoa! You slink away, as she's making this announcement, and they're about they're about to go down, and you flip the switches, and the power all power all goes out. and all And they're kids, so they all scream and start freaking out and having fun. They're like, ah!
00:21:07
Speaker
And you hear that coming from the side. I want to see, while that is happening, um if there's a back storeroom where the beeper babies are being held to see if I can find any more information out about this. You don knowt want to light the storeroom on fire?
00:21:22
Speaker
You know... part The inner demon part of yes, burn it all down. Start from scratch. Tear down society. But another part of me is like, remember that fire safety speech that that you had to do in home economics class? and You have to remember that. So, you know, I got a lot of conflicting emotions.
00:21:41
Speaker
let's have you do the same thing you have to make a brains roll of 12 to see if you can find anything that's unusual or suspicious that you think belongs to tabitha meal 16 wow okay uh you're digging through the back office and you find a safe uh you find a bunch of old game consoles that have been tucked away that aren't really supposed to be for sale uh you find a bunch of embarrassing things that belong to jared No, no, Paul, what what's Jared's embarrassing stuff in the room?
00:22:08
Speaker
It turns out Jared has been saved. I don't want to do anything creepy and weird. So what Jared does is he has a lot of security cam footage of himself dressed up as the Gamosaurus Rex having meals with the other ah robots because he's lonely.
00:22:22
Speaker
Oh, my That's so sad. I thought you said who didn't want to do creepy. Yeah. My God. So he's canonically a serial killer. Yes. Possibly the first furry, depending how you want it. I like that a lot more. I thought that started in the 70s.
00:22:39
Speaker
ah Maybe. I don't know anything. Metagaming for a second. It probably started in the 70s. You find a briefcase. you find ah ah briefcase that has the heart and heart and hand logo on the side.
00:22:56
Speaker
And it's got like little chamber locks along the top. Okay, is it is it locked? Yes. Great. im I'm gonna... I don't think I'm just gonna be able to guess the password, so I'm gonna take the whole briefcase. you Okay, so here's how this is all gonna go down, because a lot of things happen to once. Chad, you lose your beeper baby battle just as the lights go off.
00:23:17
Speaker
ah that Yeah, that makes sense. The lights shut down. Kids are screaming. Tabitha Mealy is trying to keep things organized. Like, all right, everyone. Hey, hey, no reason to scream. We can we can we can keep just it's just the power. It's just this building. Clearly, the place across the street is fine. Can I have you make a flight roll, Alfie, of 10 to sneak out with the suitcase?
00:23:45
Speaker
Okay, so I rolled, so my flight is a D8. I get eight plus one because of a thing that I definitely remember. I just rolled an eight, so I'm already at nine. Okay, great.
00:23:57
Speaker
And I exploded, I roll again. another eight! This is gonna be the sneakiest motherfucker ever. And then a three, so it's a grand total, ah nine, 17, 20.
00:24:10
Speaker
Whoa. How do you get out? um During all of this chaos with this suitcase, what have you done to sneak out? ah Because ah I'm in the darkness and I'm also wearing, you know, all black as Alfie is wanting to do He's practically invisible, um but he he feels the power of of holding a briefcase in his hand as he kind of pushes past people with with the authority of a business executive.
00:24:38
Speaker
Oh, pardon me, students, children, pardon me, many important meetings to get to bo but oo m The exchange.
00:24:49
Speaker
And then get out of the building and out of line of sight of Tabitha. ah You come back, Janet, to the darkness to find Chad. I'm sitting on the ground. I'm sitting on the ground just to potentially not like extend my leg and like trip people as they walk by to create even more chaos.
00:25:10
Speaker
And also to search for her my beeper baby on the ground blindly. I'm on all fours. Chad, Chad, are you okay?
00:25:22
Speaker
I lost it. I lost it, Janet. I can't find it It was here. It was here. We need to keep these off the streets like drugs. Have you seen the commercials? We got to keep them all off the streets.
00:25:34
Speaker
better That's true. But you know what? It's probably going to just get trampled. So i just you're and someone's going step on your fingers. Be careful. It's fine. It's fine. I've i've gone for worse. But I can't find it, Janet.
00:25:46
Speaker
What if someone else picks it up and they get hurt? That's on me. I think, I don't think we're going to be able to get rid of every single beeper, baby. I think we have to go to the source and stop Miss Mealy.
00:25:59
Speaker
Wow, that's a better idea. i like that idea. That's, that's really smart. Here, I'm going to offer ah Chad my hand and help him up onto his feet. Thank you. Wow, your hand is so small. Thank you.
00:26:10
Speaker
Oh, thank Thank you, actually. Thank As you you're looking around, and eventually, Chad, you see your Bieber baby on the floor, and you're about to reach for it, and you see this long bony hand reach out of Tabitha Mealy and go, looking for this?
00:26:29
Speaker
This wonderful thing we gave you? And she takes it, and she slaps it on her arm. You look up at her arm, and you see she's wearing dozens of these things over her arm.
00:26:41
Speaker
um you and they' started And then she reaches across her chest, Sorry, I'm looking Tucker's face.
00:26:49
Speaker
and you watch as the mechanic of the beeper babies begin to intertine and mix with her flesh you watch the wires of the beeper babies expand outwards and corrode across her neck and up through across her face and sh i'm looking at tucker's face You watch this this electrical kind of mechanism begins to glow and slowly cross from one arm across her body to this sort of half human, half digital monstrosity.
00:27:18
Speaker
And she looks at you, Alfie, from a distance as you've escaped the store. She sees you over there, and she looks to your two compatriots, and she gives you a little wave and turns on them.
00:27:30
Speaker
oh So we're back to the, like, horror... Oh, yeah. Mutilation, whatever. You guys are in this store. I'm going to set some stakes for you guys to give you some sense of what's going on in this area.
Final Showdown with Tabitha Mealy
00:27:43
Speaker
People are now running and screaming. This is chaos. This kind of half human, half monster is standing in this store. some things There are maybe four or five other kids in there, including your young sister, Jeannie.
00:27:54
Speaker
Okay. So this this this monster is there surrounding these kids are screaming. Each one of you feels this immediate ah emotional reaction, ah like a call to call to heroism inside of you.
00:28:08
Speaker
And you look down on your fanny packs that you're all wearing and notice that it's glowing. ah You all are free to unzip your fanny pack and activate your... What did I call these stupid things? ah These are your your galactic power armor or your your GPA.
00:28:23
Speaker
Oh, cute. Cute. You unzip, ah you activate your GPAs, and you are coated in this battle armor ah that aligns with the colors that we described a long time ago as you teleported to the Gudd battle station. Each one of you also has across your chest a little animal insignia that aligns with the animal that you we referenced as well. ah Chad, you have a ah peacock.
00:28:50
Speaker
Alfie, you have a hermit crab. And Janet, you have a phytic fox or like and us like a mountain, like one of those like little mountain foxes. A regular fox. I was not more specific.
00:29:02
Speaker
And you guys have activated your power armor um to fight this monster. I need each of you to roll a flight roll to represent your initiative in the combat. 10. Oh, I rolled an 80.
00:29:17
Speaker
So she's going to go first. She had a 13. Then it's going to go Alfie. Then it's going to Janet. Then it's going to go to Nah. yeah Yeah, it makes sense. You watch this creature roar.
00:29:30
Speaker
She sees Alfie from a distance and immediately she's going to grab one of the tables and huck it at the door of the shop to try to block the exit. Jesus.
00:29:42
Speaker
Nobody is in the way. So none of you are going to have to worry about ah that hurting anyone. But there is now a huge one of those wooden kind of game store ah tables blocking the exit.
00:29:54
Speaker
Am I outside? I'm outside the exit, so the the table is blocking me off? Yes. Okay. um Is it fully blocking the door, or is it something I can jump over?
00:30:06
Speaker
ah It's more blocking the door in the sense that there's a door that would stop it from opening and closing. Okay. I ha- if I remember correctly, when I- I- my- my GPA, right?
00:30:19
Speaker
I- I pull it out of the fanny pack, cause it's all... magic science. It's a big ol' shield, right? you have a You have a shield that kind of appears ah with your character suit. Each one of our heroes has a a thematic weapon to go with their GPA.
00:30:39
Speaker
um So yeah, do you have a like like an Iron Man, like or not an Iron Man, you have a like a Captain America-like shield. Great. I want to ah rush the door and try to bash my way through with the shield to try to get back to my my friends. ah We're going to make that a brawn roll?
00:30:57
Speaker
um Because you are wearing your suit, that's going to be with advantage, and that's just going to be a six to knock that door ah to knock the door clear. My brawn is my lowest stat. I roll a d4 for that.
00:31:09
Speaker
You said with advantage, which is good because that was a one. That's a four there. Okay. So I get to explode. Seven total. You ah describe how you smash this table open from the doorway.
00:31:23
Speaker
As the the shield forms around my hand, I've got one hand on the shield, one hand on the briefcase. um And ah I'm still a little confused, and I'm still kind of in business character. So Alfie just charges forward and goes, for the merger!
00:31:44
Speaker
ah And bashes through the door ah to get... to Tabitha and them, ah and then as he gets through the door he says, everyone else scatter, you gotta go. to go Is that still Alfie doing a ah deep man voice, like a grown up? It's hard to tell where Alfie begins and this character ends, and um, it's, put putting a voice on this is like putting a hat on a hat.
00:32:16
Speaker
great That means it's Janet's turn. um ah um I was not thinking ahead. i am going to, for, you know, continuity sake, I'm going to reach into my GPA fanny pack and take out my.
00:32:34
Speaker
I have a cheer baton, right? Yes. And i my initial inclination was to like jump on the monster or tackle it or something. But I think I'm not, I don't have enough mass to, to like, to get any motion behind me and and knock over.
00:32:52
Speaker
So I'm going to take my baton and kind of sweep it at her feet. and try to trip her? um I would say that's a fight roll. Fight.
00:33:02
Speaker
Okay. Oh, no, that's not okay, actually. Let's do something else. My fight's a four. Well, it's going the same thing. You're using your weapon, and so as long as you're going to be wearing your GPA, I'm going to give you advantage on any of your skill checks.
00:33:15
Speaker
So it's going to be a five. Since you're not really trying to hurt her, you're just trying to inconvenience her during this combat.
00:33:22
Speaker
One and a one. Can I use a pocket D6 on that? Yeah, let's say you do that. All right, great. Because I... I rolled a three total. All right. So you do that. you You're like, you let out this crackling energy and you your baton extends as you you release this blue ah current through your body through it and it gets grows longer and it slams into the leg of this ah monster, but it just doesn't have any give and you hear this loud clack as it hits and she turns and looks at you.
00:33:50
Speaker
She's going to reach down and grab this baton and shove it into your chest. She's going to make a fight roll against your ah grit. She's hitting me with my own baton. Hoisted by your own baton. Okay, well, before she does that, I want to say, like, oops.
00:34:05
Speaker
I really thought that would work. I don't know. I'm not a physical combat person. um I'm sorry. What am I rolling? ah You're rolling a grit roll against her fight.
00:34:17
Speaker
Grit roll. ah Same situation. You'll roll with advantage. It's an attack against you in your armor. It's relevant. I got a five. She rolled a six. So he actually just beat you a little bit. ah There isn't a wound system, but they do say like every time you lose one of those, you do take damage.
00:34:33
Speaker
um So we will say that this hit to your chest knocks the wind out of you. really do feel this. There's no real physical. There's a little bit of like pain in your chest, um but it doesn't feel like you have any like real long term repercussions from this. sure this is maybe one of the first times janet has ever been hurt uh in this kind of a way uh what prior to this what is the largest injury that janet had ever um well this feels like kind of a cop-out given the game we're playing but uh janet did break her elbow falling off her bike uh when she was 12 i didn't know where you were
00:35:06
Speaker
but um so yeah a broke a broken shoulder or a broken elbow i mean which which i will say hurt a lot um but uh very different from having the wind knocked out of your like solar plexus so that's certainly a new experience to be like have the breath stolen from you chad yeah you watch uh this hit to janet how do you react oh chad's pissed Like, furious.
00:35:34
Speaker
Because he finally came- not finally, that sounds really weird. he He knows we don't hit girls. um so and he And Janet's his friend, so he wants to protect her, obviously.
00:35:48
Speaker
um So, okay, you know how in these stores there's always like a demo machine? Yeah. Okay, so Chad is going to rip the controllers from the demo machine and use them as bolas and try to wrap the arm that has all of the beeper babies.
00:36:09
Speaker
Okay. Like wrap them around the arm just like... throw them and and wrap the arm. Cool. I will say that you don't have to make a brawn roll to yank that out, um but you will have to make a fight roll against her flight to see how well you can capture her. Okay.
00:36:28
Speaker
Okay. And do we think this is a sporty activity? No.
00:36:34
Speaker
No. We feeling any sports vibes here. All right. So I have a pretty extreme role. I don't want to tell you in which way we're going to go, but I'll tell you the truth. do you want to tell me yours first?
00:36:44
Speaker
Well, is she rolled a three. I got a four. Wow. Okay. ah So I will say you wrap up one of the like a couple of those controllers around her arm.
00:36:57
Speaker
ah Not enough to incapacitate her or tie her up, but certainly enough to inconvenience her in some sort of fashion. We don't hit girls! I'm a girl.
00:37:07
Speaker
You're a woman! i'm a girl She is going to let's have her make a strength roll to try to just tear that off or not a strength roll. She makes a brawn roll, which you failed.
00:37:21
Speaker
um So she's not able to like untangle her arm from that. But what she will do is with her other hand, she's going to reach out and grab one of the standees and just start pouring an electrical current from her body into it and starting a small fire on it.
00:37:37
Speaker
Come on. um So a fire has broken out inside of the store. She stole her idea. Alfie, that's back to you. You are there. You've smashed the door open, right? With your shield.
00:37:48
Speaker
Right. I'm in there. Is she still holding on to the the stand that she is causing this fire with? I'm going to to sort of drop the briefcase in it in a safe place that I'll be able to hopefully find later.
00:38:03
Speaker
And I'm going to disperse the shield for now. And I believe this is the perfect moment ah to do Alfie's sort of magical power that he has. Oh my god, I did not think about this. ah Alfie has the power to create water since he spent a lot of time in the earlier episodes just always being...
00:38:32
Speaker
relatively wet, um and where that comes out of is his pants pockets.
00:38:42
Speaker
open in your pocket with your hand and it like pours out? Yeah, he like, he like turns his pockets inside, he feels, he feels the water, the wetness, uh, building up a inside of him somehow.
00:38:59
Speaker
and he, he turns his pockets inside out and aims them like you would a cow's udder, ah Or a fire hose directly at, one, her being electrical and robotic. I don't know if she has any exposed wiring and at the fire to try to put it out.
00:39:21
Speaker
um I don't know how we did not exactly talk about how... We did not talk about how you dispense your water and it's made me uncomfortable. I guess I should not give creative freedom to players at some time.
00:39:33
Speaker
um ah ah I don't think fire makes a grit roll. So I'll let you put out the fire because I'm so uncomfortable about it.
00:39:43
Speaker
But I'm going to let you make a fight roll against her to see if you can make the electrical short out. Eight. ah You beat her by five.
00:39:54
Speaker
Whoa! Wow. Describe how she reacts to this short-circuiting. Mostly it's stunned bewilderment at... at how possibly all of this water is magically coming out of this boy's pants.
00:40:12
Speaker
ah And she he goes, ah Jesus. So much water coming out of this boy's pants, man. So much water coming out of this boy's pants. The woman couldn't prepare.
00:40:23
Speaker
Does she have a robotic voice? Did you give her a robotic voice? that would Yeah, i probably will. Yeah, all right. you tell You said something like that when you said, I'm a woman. ah I, I, she's just going to go with the classic, uh, I'm melting. You do. You heard that you screaming out this, I'm melting. The, the arm is shorting a little bit.
00:40:44
Speaker
Um, the little sparks on her chest and the wires have started to fray outwards from her skin. It's, she's still ah active. ah But whatever you've done has caused a lot of pain and slowed her down.
00:40:55
Speaker
We're going to move to the next in the chain, which is Janet. Great. um God. um I think now that she's distracted and I have established that my baton is not hefty enough for the job, I'm going tackle her legs this time.
00:41:13
Speaker
I'm going to get behind her and tackle her legs. um I think that's just going to... Is that just a flat brawn then, rather than fight even? Like, you're just trying to knock her over? You tell me. That sounds good.
00:41:24
Speaker
Let's make it a brawn. That's a brawn roll of six. Again, with advantage because you're ah using your your battle armor. I rolled a six. you You do this. You you come and you knock her to the ground, especially with the the like the stuttering and the the electrical coursing through the electrical pulses couls coursing through her.
00:41:43
Speaker
ah She's lost a lot of stability in her leg, and she falls to the ground. Her arm whips back and nearly hits you, but you manage to avoid that too. Chad. Speak of the devil, I would like to say, Chad.
00:41:55
Speaker
Yes. I think we need a citizen's arrest over here. Yes. but Janet, I've been waiting for you to say those words to me. I thought you might be. So please correct me if I'm wrong, but Chad's power is that he can develop sports equipment energy.
00:42:14
Speaker
Yes. Chad can, according to the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers CT RPG book, yeah Pink Ranger's ability is related to projectiles. So Chad can excellent conjure energy-based versions of sporting equipment. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
00:42:33
Speaker
Um, so I'm going to conjure a bat and I'm going to take one. Calm down. This is, I'm not going to bat her to death. Um, but take one of the cubes on display and I'm going to toss it up and just bat it straight at her head. I'm sorry. I'm going to buzz you. Oh, you're absolutely right. The Emerald's cube, Emerald's cube.
00:42:57
Speaker
You took the... That's great. Is that better? You want ivory cube? I'm not going to lie. That one's over my head. Ruby? Emerald? Instead of a ruby. Oh, emeryllic cube. Okay, cool, cool. Yep, that was way less complicated than I was trying to make it in my head. No, and no, no, no, no. Don't worry. Emeraldic cube. Yeah, I'm going to toss it in the air and try to bat it directly at her head.
00:43:20
Speaker
Because if she's knocked unconscious, then I can do the proper citizen's arrest. That's just going to be a flat fight roll, Chad. Okay. Fight, fight, fight. Let's hope these die don't betray me.
00:43:33
Speaker
oh wait a second. and it's going to be with advantage, too, because you're using your armor. There's not. Yeah, doesn't. Yes. Yeah, that's a 26. Holy shit. You beat it handedly.
00:43:46
Speaker
ah you you beat it handedly but Sorry, may I pivot rather than aiming at her head? Because I just don't. It feels a little bit abusive. Chad, you can do anything you want with a 26. Thank you.
00:44:00
Speaker
So I'm just going to aim it at the button that she pressed initially to to put on the suit to just like turn it off. Very clever.
00:44:12
Speaker
so smoke man she has ah She starts to stand up and she puts her hands up. And as she's getting up, Chad, you smash this cube. And it bursts a little bit because it's not designed for the impact of ah ah a Division I high school athlete swing.
00:44:27
Speaker
But the good chunk of it goes careening into her chest and slams into it. Her tie... is sizzling from the speed, cartoonish speed of the amaryllic cube as it slams into her chest. You watch her look down and freak out as slowly the electrical parts begin to wither away from her skin.
00:44:51
Speaker
But rather than flesh revealing, it's just missing, missing part. It has been consumed by the electrical pieces that she took on.
00:45:01
Speaker
ah You watch as you eventually let out screams and yells. Most of the people have escaped from the room due to to the the fire and people are freaking out. But you guys see basically the remains of Tabitha Mealy, representative of the Heart and Hand Corporation on the ground.
00:45:17
Speaker
Oh, my God. Right. Can I arrest her now? It's just there's not a lot to arrest. did Did you just kill her, Chad? No. I- no, no, I did not. I didn't. Don't say that. Don't say that.
00:45:28
Speaker
Don't say that. The beeper babies probably already had taken her over or something, I think. She was- yeah, she was already dead. She was definitely already dead. Yeah, that must be it.
00:45:40
Speaker
That's definitely it. That was pretty crazy, though. Huh? That was- that was so- yeah. Your sister! Your sister! Janet! Paul, where's Jeannie?
00:45:51
Speaker
Jeannie who ran out with everyone else. You can go find her outside if you want. are we Are we still in our GPAs or? Yes, you're still, you got, your GPAs are up. You guys, that was crazy. I am so wet.
00:46:04
Speaker
Oh, buddy, happened again. What? Did it happen again? Oh my goodness, it happened again. Janet. No, it was on purpose this time. Wait, that didn't, listen. Wait. but Alfie, what's that suitcase?
00:46:20
Speaker
Oh, I forgot about the suitcase, which I then picked up. the ah Tabitha's definitely she she gone, right? There's no... Oh yeah, there is nothing left. um ah When you turned off all the lights, I went into the back and I found this briefcase ah with the heart in the hand logo, and I think you know might be important for whatever...
00:46:41
Speaker
sinister evilness they got going on. Also, did she turn into a crazy frickin' robot? Yeah, something like that. I don't know. Um, but this has ah codes on it, and i i don't know I don't know what the code is, and I didn't think we had time, but I think we should try to open this up after we make sure everyone's safe and whatever.
00:47:01
Speaker
Pretty sure Janet can figure it out. Yeah, I guess we should check on people first. Um, hey, before we leave, I just... I want to say two things. One, I'm just really grateful that we did this together as a team.
00:47:15
Speaker
That was really nice. I'm sad someone is dead, but I'm just grateful. Second is I think we should take the list where we signed up that has our names and either burn it or take it with us so they so there's no trail that we were here.
00:47:32
Speaker
i think people might know we were here. We're all glowing. Well, not like us, us, but like... gar I'm going to cast the unanimity blanket now. You guys have the same luxury of almost any time you transform unless it's willfully done in front of other people.
00:47:50
Speaker
As long as it's done under some form of chaos or you guys are like, let's go. Nobody will notice you transform. If that makes sense. In the same way the Power Rangers are always like, let's get off screen. And then they come back and they're suited up.
00:48:02
Speaker
Going forth, as long as you make an effort to have it happen during moments of panic or concealed, nobody will notice you leave or come back out of armor. Then I agree with Chad about destroying the evidence we were ever here. yeah yeah you're really good at this. Have you ever considered robbing banks?
00:48:16
Speaker
Well, actually, when I was seven, I tried to get I tried to rob a bank, but there was no getaway car. oh So it's oh, my dad told me I can't talk about this.
00:48:29
Speaker
Never mind. I take it all back. Nothing happened. When I was seven, I was seven. I was normal. the
00:48:37
Speaker
um As the the the smoke settles and mall security comes in ah What was his name?
Aftermath and Cover-up
00:48:45
Speaker
Paul Blart. No, the last name is the same as his first name.
00:48:50
Speaker
Oh, yeah. oh Was it Mitchell Mitchell? Mitchelson? Or Mitchell Mitchell? Wait a second. um
00:49:02
Speaker
It's not him, though. It's a different officer, because I can't remember his name. ah Scoot Magoot. Scoot Magoot. Officer Scoot Magood is there and he's kind of breaking people up and he's calling. He's like, all right, everybody, let's ah let's calm down. Let's see what happened here. Oh, oh, oh. And he looks down to Jeannie and Jeannie's crying. She's like, I can't find my sister.
00:49:20
Speaker
I can't find my sister. You guys are able to D, you know, to take your GPAs down um and ah join the rest of the group if you're interested in that. Great. Yeah, I'm going to run up to Jeannie and i don't know I guess I give her a hug. Kind of like, it's all right, Jeannie.
00:49:35
Speaker
everything's gonna be okay um she lets out big sob she goes i didn't mean to steal i didn't want it i'll never take things out of the garbage again don't worry about that right now it's it's totally okay that's the only lesson i learned chad wasn't there chad went to go buy a hot dog without anyone seeing him and then he's gonna return to them with the hot dog and be like hey guys what happened everything everyone oh whoa whoa whoa what happened there Alfie is going to walk up to Officer Scoot Magoot.
00:50:06
Speaker
Yep, Scoot Magoot! ah Officer, I think I know what happened. um the The heart and the hand had a had big beeper baby tournament, and they had this really cool, like...
00:50:21
Speaker
robot mascot thing. Um, but I think it got a little wet and it started electrical fire and it sort of short circuited, uh, the power and, you know, it caused a little bit of chaos, but I think everything's fine now and there's no reason to write any reports on anything.
00:50:37
Speaker
Well, looks like you did all the work for me and I'm, you know, I'm one to listen to you. So, uh, kid, thanks for your work. And he gives you a nice thumbs up. He goes, all right, now everyone, let's close down. I'm gonna, uh, make sure everyone here gets home to their families and I'm not trying to make any big statement about cops.
00:50:51
Speaker
So, you guys gather up. You have the suitcase. All right. Um, well Janet, do you think you can open this? Uh, well, I'm not sure if this is going to work, but I have something I'd like to try.
00:51:05
Speaker
Do I have access to my baton when I'm not wearing my GPA? Not yet. Well, I'm out of ideas, guys. I'm going hand it to Chad. What? Oh, I can open this.
00:51:16
Speaker
Just try it. Try just smashing it against a rock or something. Okay, but um let's go outside to our bikes because I have a hammer in my bike.
Mysterious Notebook and Cliffhanger
00:51:23
Speaker
Okay. That's weird thing bike around with. That makes the most out of anything I've ever heard.
00:51:27
Speaker
yeah Okay, come on. Hey, Chad, why do you ride around with a hammer? Oh, I was just building something at school. What were you building? Right, you're not in shop class. That's fine. No, I'm not in shop class.
00:51:39
Speaker
No, you're building some bird houses for the community. Yeah, it's nice. Mine's pink. that tracks at this point. Yeah. Alright, let's outside so I can just crack this open with the hammer.
00:51:53
Speaker
ah Great. So you guys, I guess, sneak off from the bikes, go off away from other people, and Chad, I guess I'll just let you try to brawn roll this a briefcase open. Beat an eight, I guess, to smash open the briefcase.
00:52:08
Speaker
Let's see. I guess here's the thing. You could take a half roll, because you could take as long as you want with it, right? Like, you could... Great. have a 20, so that's a half roll. Not what I just rolled, which I will not say what it was. Not how I thought this would all go down.
00:52:22
Speaker
But, Chad, eventually you you take your second. and You smash the two locks. Chad, smash! And then you is as you you you you know there's you crack it open. And cinematically, I envision this a lot like the ah briefcase from Pulp Fiction.
00:52:36
Speaker
as There's like a kind of a like a light that consumes you as you open it up. ah But when you look inside... It's a very colorful looking notebook, like ah like a single like accordion ah folder.
00:52:50
Speaker
You know what I mean? um But there's the the print on it is shockingly vibrant. It is. colorful animals. There's like a cutesy unicorn doing a tug of war with an owl and the owl has the rope in its mouth.
00:53:04
Speaker
There's like a river with beautiful rainbow fish jumping out of it. Um, there's a whole skyline that has these unnatural colors on it. Um, and you open it up and it's this gray, disgusting, uh, color on the inside that just fills you with sadness and dread.
00:53:20
Speaker
When you look upon it, you can't even like really look at it that much that like that gray, whatever print and pattern on it just like makes you feel uncomfortable. And so you immediately snap it shut. And there's that vibrant animal print. and It's beautiful and colorful. Makes you feel positive and joyful. Chad, there's even a moment while you're holding this and you see it in front of you and you look up at your two compatriots and you don't want them to have it either. Right.
00:53:42
Speaker
That's yours. What? It's my notebook. It's pink. It matches me. Well, it has pink on it. It's fine. We need to figure... when Is there anything written in there?
00:53:54
Speaker
Can I see it? Mm-mm. No, it doesn't have your name on it. Does it have your name on it? It does on the inside. What? It says your name on it? Can I see? i don't understand. Yeah, on the inside. No, you can't have it. I'm so sorry.
00:54:06
Speaker
It's mine. um Maybe tomorrow. Maybe tomorrow you can have it for like a day. Chad, are you okay? Fine. Yeah, fine. I'm fine.
00:54:18
Speaker
Let's go get some ice cream. I'm going to give Alfie a little side eye. Like we we could tell what's going on, right? ah Sorry, Jen, is something wrong with your eye? Well, I was thinking, God, Alfie, are you hungry? i we could probably go for some more hot dogs.
00:54:35
Speaker
Whoa, okay. Chad, do you mind running inside and grabbing us like three more hot dogs or six more hot dogs? All right. Or 12 more hot dogs? Sure. Just give me one second. Let me, uh, I will. I can't just like close the briefcase again, right? Because I did hammer it open.
00:54:51
Speaker
Oh, but I do have my backpack. Just give me one second. Let me just put the notebook in my backpack and I'll. Well, you can't bring it back into the mall because the police are in there. So why don't you just let us hold it while you go grab 12 hot dogs?
00:55:02
Speaker
oh a Let's go together. don't really feel doing that. i Chad, give us the notebook right now.
00:55:13
Speaker
I try to grab it from Chad. Oh boy. Fuck, this is such a bad idea. Yeah. Make a flight roll against Chad's brawn. All right, little buddy. oh Seven plus one, eight. Sixteen.
00:55:27
Speaker
but Chad, how do you react to Alfie trying to steal your favorite thing? Yeah, pissed off. I'm a little pissed off, Alfie. Like, I like welcomed you into our team.
00:55:39
Speaker
you You've literally been, like, in my car with my dad.

00:55:58
Speaker
Look, Chad, something's clearly going on with you in that notebook. Okay. Yeah. Can we close the briefcase for one second? We can close the briefcase, Janet.
00:56:08
Speaker
Yeah. Let's close the briefcase, Janet. All right. I'm going to try to slam the briefcase shut with the book in it. my God. I don't know. is the Is the book inside of it, and Chad? It is inside of it. Can we put can come and put the book in the briefcase? You can hold the briefcase. Let's just close it.
00:56:23
Speaker
Okay. Sure. We can close it. But I'm holding the briefcase. Great. Okay. Fine. um Chad is going to put his fingers inside of the briefcase so it's not fully closed. God damn. I can't see it, Chad.
00:56:35
Speaker
on This is fun. This is fun. It's close. Can I tell that Chad is obviously doing this? Yes. ah Can I try to knock it out of the suitcase so he's knock his fingers out?
00:56:50
Speaker
Just real quick. this you know Not a force thing, just a little sleight of hand situation. I'll let you make one more flight roll against Chad. I brawn again? You're brawn again. I'm trying to think. Okay.
00:57:02
Speaker
If I have any better options, this is the worst person who could have opened this for you, Case. I know. TK here, Paul. um Okay, what am I rolling? A You tell me what you rolled first, Chad.
00:57:15
Speaker
rolled a three. I rolled three. Alfie, you have a chance yeah to do something crazy. Roll flight, and if you beat that three, you can knock it out. I'm going to be so mad at you, Tucker. I mean, Alfie.
00:57:27
Speaker
I rolled an eight and exploded. So eight plus one plus three is 12. Let me describe how this all goes down. Chad, you see Janet go for it.
00:57:38
Speaker
You're ready. You pull the suitcase kind of away to avoid him. But that's when Alfie takes his chance. Alfie, you full football tackle the suitcase out of Chad's hands with both.
00:57:52
Speaker
You knock it to the ground. It spills open. Because it wasn't closed all the way. Including the notebook. As you slide forward.
00:58:04
Speaker
We watch as you physically begin to go into the notebook hands and feet first. oh what And the two of you watch as you now see Alfie's legs slowly pulling into the weird colorful notebook.
00:58:20
Speaker
