Autoimmunity and Autism

Now another cause of immune dysregulation is autoimmunity to self proteins. So there's been a number of studies that have found autistic subjects to have various antibodies in their blood to their own tissues, such as those of the gut barrier, the brain and the central nervous system.

Antibodies and Autism Severity

as well as other cellular components. So for example, researchers have found levels of antibodies to basically cerebellar neurons or brain cells to be associated with higher autism severity. In that study, children with more severe autism had higher levels of antibodies than children with mild to moderate autism.

Research Needs and Opportunities

Other studies have also found autism severity to be associated with antibodies to tissues in the brain. And here are some of these studies. Again, you can dig in a little bit deeper in your own time if you wish. I think

Testing and Intervention

Speaker
the most important thing is to understand that more research needs to be done in this area because there certainly seems to be in a subset of autistic children, there seems to be an autoimmune component to the immune system dysregulation.

So there are tests out there that I will cover later that do test for antibodies. And I'm not saying you need to run them in all cases, but in some cases at the discretion of your practitioner, they can make a more educated decision based on your child's health history and so on.

whether some of those tests are a good idea to run. Because if you identify antibodies like that, then you have more information with which to make changes, again, to protocols, to lifestyle interventions that may help to reduce the causes of why those antibodies are being created.
