Thank you for joining me today! Today's reading comes to us from Exodus  22-23, Leviticus 19, 23-24, and Deuteronomy 5, 22-24 for the sections  entitled Rules for Treating People Right. For the Section entitled Rules  About War, it covers Deuteronomy 20. The section entitled Moses' Song  comes to us from Deuteronomy 30-32, and 34. Today we will read about  God's desire for us to live generously, giving to others and allowing  others to share in what God has provided for us. Moses tells us that  these are not just rules, they are life. I don't know about you, but I  do feel these "rules" are not just ways to behave, they are how to LIVE.  We will be encouraged in today's reading to remember that "The battle  belongs to the LORD," and He will fight our battles for us. We do not  need to be afraid. I was very moved today to read the song that God gave  Moses to remember that GOD is the one who teaches His people, provides  for His people, and that we are to tell others about this fact. As  always, I will include my personal application to today's reading and  encourage you to see yourself in today's reading, listening for ways God  will give you to apply it to your own daily life. Happy Sunday,  everyone!

Introduction and Bible Reading Plan

00:00:03
Speaker
Happy Sunday, everyone. Welcome to Sunday, February 9, 2025. You are joining Robin with In the Family Way Coaching, and we're here for our daily Bible reading. We are going through the entire Bible in one year, and we are using the Day by Day Kids Bible, and that's written by Karen Henley.
00:00:25
Speaker
If you have your calendar, you can go ahead and bring that out. I have mine out today, and I have put my sticker on for today to show that I've read my daily entry. And you're getting ready to read the Bible too, so you can put your sticker on there too.

Audience Acknowledgment and Personal Experience

00:00:40
Speaker
Thank you so much for joining me today, whether you are listening via YouTube music or whether you are on Spotify, whether you have found me on TikTok, watching from my site, watching from YouTube or from any other of your favorite podcasting apps. Thank you so much for being here today. I really appreciate your audience and I hope that you've been enjoying these readings as much as I have enjoyed reading them with you.
00:01:06
Speaker
we are going to be heading into some additional rules today in our Bible reading. And I really love these. They can seem a little bit repetitive with some of the same things being said again, but it just is ah really goes to show us that these things were very important for God to say them over and over again. And I love that because I don't know about you, but I need that reminder.
00:01:33
Speaker
because I tend to fall into the same sins over and over again. And even though ah i I struggle with them, i have at least I have these readings that have really been helping me with ah putting my mind back on track with that technique that I told you about called changing the channel.
00:01:52
Speaker
So all day long, I am practicing my changing the channel when I find that my thoughts are going towards things that they shouldn't be spending time on. And I hope that you are finding that technique helpful for you as well.

God's Desire for Fellowship

00:02:04
Speaker
I know God has been very faithful to me to help me change the channel and to give me much more pleasant things to think about because he is so much more pleasant to think about than any of the things that I may be thinking about that are not as pleasant, such as somebody in particular who may be bothering at me, or just something that i I keep focusing on, that I should not be focusing on. And I want to be sure and give God all of my attention, because He is the one who never can get enough of you. He can never get enough of me. He wants all of our attention. And not because He is greedy, but because He tells us He is a jealous God, and He created us for Himself to have fellowship with Him.
00:02:45
Speaker
And I'm really thankful for that because I know that sometimes I can be frustrated that somebody is not giving me the attention or is not as excited about something that I am excited about.

Biblical Teachings on Kindness and Equality

00:02:56
Speaker
Because sometimes it just seems like people are not as excited about the things that I'm excited and about. And nobody is ever quite has just the amount of excitement that I would hope that they would have when I want to tell them about things.
00:03:11
Speaker
But you know what? God is always happy to hear from us. He wants us to talk with Him. He wants us to tell Him things and to treat Him like a friend. And so I love talking with Jesus and incorporating Him into my day. It is so much happier and it really makes my days go by better. So I hope that you are ah finding that that is the case with you as well. And that is one of my personal applications that I wanted to share with you today.
00:03:39
Speaker
So with that in mind, let's go ahead and get started with our daily reading. Today we have some rules about how ah rules for treating people right. I really like these rules. And basically they can be summed up in the statement of treat everybody as nicely as you can.
00:04:03
Speaker
These come to us from Exodus 22 to 23, Leviticus 19, 23 through 24, Deuteronomy 5, and 22 through 24.
00:04:18
Speaker
This is actually the very first thing they tell us is one of my very, very favorite rules that God gives us. Because God cares about everybody's wellbeing. He cares about us whether we have a little of something or whether we have a lot of something. And later on, Jesus tells us that for those who have been given much, much is expected of them. And for those who have been given little, little is expected of them. When we find that we have extra of anything,
00:04:46
Speaker
ah we should be encouraged to share it. And that's what I really like about um this very first rule that he gives us is that basically God will give us enough and that when we have enough, take what we have left over and share it. It says, when you gather crops, leave some in the field for the poor people. Leave it for people who come from other lands.

Empathy and Peace in Biblical Context

00:05:15
Speaker
Let's say you walk through your neighbor's grape field. You may eat all the grapes you want, but don't carry any out of the field with you. You may go into your neighbor's wheat field, but don't cut down his wheat. You may eat some of the grain. Don't take it out of the field. Be kind to your father and mother, then you'll live a long life. God will bring good things to you. Obey your father and mother.
00:05:47
Speaker
Stand up when an old person is with you. Be kind to old people. Be kind to women whose husbands have died. Be kind to children whose mother and father have died. Someone from another land may choose to live with you. He should follow the same laws your people follow. Treat him like one of your own people. Love him as you love yourself. Remember that you were strangers one time in Egypt.
00:06:18
Speaker
Don't say bad things about people who cannot hear. And do not put something in the way of someone who cannot see. Don't tell bad things about other people. Don't put somebody's life in danger. Don't hate other people.
00:06:39
Speaker
Don't try to get back at someone who has done you wrong. Love your neighbor as you love yourself. Let's say you find something that belongs to someone else. It may be his ox or his sheep. It may be his donkey or his coat or something else. Take it back to him. Don't want things that your neighbor has. Don't try to get what your neighbor has.
00:07:10
Speaker
Rules about war. This comes to us from Deuteronomy 20. Let's say you go to war. You see horses and chariots. You see a big army coming to fight you. Don't be afraid. God is with you. He will help you win. You might march up to a city far away, then offer peace to the people of the city. If they say they want peace, then they can work for you. But if they don't make peace, fight them.
00:07:44
Speaker
There are cities nearby. They are in the land God is giving you. Fight these cities and get rid of the people. If you don't, they'll teach you to worship their gods, then you will sin. Moses' song from Deuteronomy 30 through 32 and 34.

Moses' Final Teachings and Legacy

00:08:10
Speaker
Moses said to God's people,
00:08:12
Speaker
All of this isn't too hard for you. God's word is very close to you. It's in your mouth. It's in your heart. You can obey it. Today, I'm showing you what to choose from. Choose between life and death. Choose between good and bad. Choose life. Then you and your children can live and you can love God. Listen to him.
00:08:41
Speaker
Stay with him because God is your life. Then Moses told the people, I am 120 years old. I cannot lead you anymore. But God will go ahead of you and Joshua will go with you. God will help you win over your enemies. So don't be scared of them. God will go with you and he will never leave you. He will never forget about you.
00:09:11
Speaker
Then God told Moses, It's time for you to die. Get Joshua. Bring him to the worship tent. So Moses took Joshua to the worship tent. Then God came there in the tall cloud. The cloud stayed over the front of the tent. God spoke to Joshua, Be strong.
00:09:36
Speaker
Be brave. You will take the people into the promised land. I will be with you." Then God told Moses, These people will forget me. When they do, I'll be angry with them. They'll have hard times. They'll say that this happened because I was not with them. So write down this song. Teach it to the people. They can remember this song.
00:10:03
Speaker
So Moses wrote the song down. Then he taught it to the people. Listen, Skye, I will talk. Listen earth to the words I say. My teaching will come down like rain. It will be like rain on new grass. I'll tell about God's name, praise God's greatness. He is like a rock for us. Everything He does is right. He keeps His promises. He doesn't do anything wrong.
00:10:33
Speaker
Remember the old days. Ask your fathers. They'll tell you. God gave his people milk and wheat and grapes. But they began to worship idols. They forgot God. So God was angry. I'll turn my face away, he said. I'll send trouble to them. But God will be kind to people who serve him. God will win over his enemies. He will save his land and his people.
00:11:03
Speaker
Moses told the people, think about everything I have told you. Tell your children to obey God's laws. The law isn't just words. It's your life. So obey the law. Then you'll live a long time in God's promised land.
00:11:24
Speaker
That day, God told Moses, go up on the mountain. It's the one across from Jericho. You will die on this mountain. You won't be able to go into the promised land, but you may look at it. You can see it from the mountain. So Moses climbed up the mountain and God showed him the promised land. Then Moses died.
00:11:51
Speaker
His grave is in a valley, but nobody knows just where it is. Moses was 120 years old when he died, but he could still see and he was still strong. um God's people cried when Moses died. There has never been another prophet like Moses. God talked with him in a special way. Nobody else ever showed as much of God's great power. Moses did many wonders.
00:12:22
Speaker
And that's the end of our reading today.
00:12:29
Speaker
I love that God gave them a song to sing. We remember things easier sometimes when we sing it. And I don't know the music to sing it. And I i try to give it in God's voice so that we know that it is coming from God. It's not something that Moses was saying or making up himself.
00:12:50
Speaker
And God knew that his people would once again forget about him. And he was reminding them that he knows what's going to happen. But I love that God wrote that song. A song written by God. I never realized that before ah today's reading. So I hope that that is just as wondrous for you as it is for me today to think that our God wrote a song for his people to remember.
00:13:19
Speaker
i ah I love how Moses said that that the rules that God gives us are not just words, they are life. And I love that this Bible is ah version is written in story form because it's it's conversational. it's It's like we're talking together. And I like that very much. um So it really lends to the feeling that that the things that God is telling us are not just words.
00:13:49
Speaker
that they they are part of us and I love that. So I hope that you find that that is true for you as well today as we read these things and as you hear them.

Generosity and Challenges in Life

00:14:00
Speaker
I love how ah God said to leave food in the field for people.
00:14:06
Speaker
Later on we will see in the book of Ruth that she was going through Boaz's field and she was very careful to eat only the stalks of grain that were a single piece. you you They weren't permitted to take some that were three because that would be a full piece and that was for the for the owner of the wheat to be able to harvest.
00:14:29
Speaker
And we will see in the book of Ruth that Boaz is very generous where he and instructs his people to leave ah more wheat for people for her to discover. And I love that. So that is something that we can do as well. ah We can leave things, we can leave enough for people because God gives us so much. He gives us more than we need. And I love how he says on here that that we have permission, we don't do this anymore. There are rules in in our society today against um walking into somebody's yard and just helping themselves to fruit that is growing. But I love how that that was part of God's original rules is that it was permissible, it was permissible for anybody to walk through somebody's land. And while you could not harvest, meaning you could not take more than you could eat,
00:15:23
Speaker
If you were hungry, you could go through a field and eat somebody's food that was growing because who gave that food? God did. And I just love that. So I just want to encourage us to um share what we have and knowing that we have more than enough that God has provided for us.
00:15:47
Speaker
Let's see. I like how God um specifically encourages us again to be kind to people who are strangers from another land and that we should treat people as though they are ah ah love them and as ourselves. i It may seem that these are that these are common sense, but these are things that meant a lot to God. If he they weren't important to God, he wouldn't have had Moses write them down and instruct the people on how he wants us to behave.
00:16:19
Speaker
So I just wanted to encourage us. I know in my own application, i sometimes I can be um less than thoughtful of other people. And so this really reminds me of how God wants us to be. So that's that's my personal application there too. And I i love how ah we we have this saying that says, the battle belongs to the Lord.
00:16:48
Speaker
when and God was letting them know ahead of time again, that when they would face war, not to be afraid. So when we face hard times and we come across things that are challenging, let's let's not be scared of them, but to know that God is with us.
00:17:07
Speaker
I love that. and And notice how he said that when you when they would come in upon a city to first offer peace, but not specifically to the cities that were in the land that he was giving them. He was not going back on his commandment to or his directions, I should say, to get rid of the people who were doing bad in that land. Because remember, the people who were in that land were worshiping idols and they were doing really horrible things.
00:17:33
Speaker
he says like even sacrificing their own children to these false gods and these are things that in the big bible he uses the word detestable god hates these things so we want to
00:17:49
Speaker
make sure that ah they wanted, they were supposed to make sure that they got rid of the people who were doing these terrible, terrible things. But otherwise, if they came upon a city that they should first offer peace in certain air and certain times.
00:18:07
Speaker
And I love how God encourages us to be peaceful. That's one of the fruits of the spirit is peace. So I hope that you have found these things encouraging and that you have enjoyed our reading today.
