Introduction to Speedway Stories and Special Guest
00:01:29
Speaker
Welcome everybody to another edition of Speedway Stories. um I hope you guys all had an awesome weekend. um My weekend was pretty good and everything else. It's your boy Wally and Johnny.
00:01:40
Speaker
um Tonight, guys, we have a very special guest. um This is pretty amazing what this backstory yeah that's going to be shared with you guys tonight.
00:01:51
Speaker
um it a It's a great thing. um We have tonight one of the youngest up-and-coming stars of Megatruck Racing here tonight for you guys as a special guest with his dad and everything.
00:02:07
Speaker
um He drives, as you've seen in the background that I had, I borrowed the picture and everything that they sent me. ah This is actually their shirt um of the Aggravator.
00:02:17
Speaker
They are on Facebook and everything else. Go give them a follow, like, and stuff. Follow along. um I also want to give a shout-out. to a former guest Brad that was on the show from Berserker Motorsports.
00:02:29
Speaker
um Buddy, if it wasn't for you, man, and being friends with you, i don't think I'd have the opportunity to get the privilege of this family here to share the stories that we're going to hear tonight and everything
Racing Experiences and Early Challenges
00:02:42
Speaker
else. So without further ado, I am going to bring Jackson and his father up, everybody. You got questions or anything, let me know, and we'll check we'll get them answered the best we can tonight.
00:02:56
Speaker
Hi Jackson, welcome to the show. Yeah. I seen your guys' at Facebook post. I heard you had an exciting weekend racing.
00:03:07
Speaker
Yeah, we, it was interesting to say the least. We, um, We got it loaded up on the trailer and my power steering started acting up as we were loading it up. And we were like, hey, it's probably fine. It's probably just because it has some air bubbles or it's low.
00:03:22
Speaker
So we filled it up and everything. We got to the track, realized as I'm backing it off the trailer, I have no power steering. So that night we're trying to find a pump, everything. He stays up, him and um one of our friends that helps us work on the truck, my dad and Chris Crowley.
00:03:40
Speaker
Okay. All night till sunrise, getting a new pump in still doesn't work. Then we try putting a new orbital valve in doesn't work. So I end up running the day with no power steering first round, little bit all over the place because there's some weird ruts and stuff.
00:03:58
Speaker
Still won. I still won the pass by a good bit. but
Journey from Power Wheels to Megatrucks
00:04:03
Speaker
um so That skipped me through the loser's bracket and I got put into the quarterfinals? think semifinals are semifinals. Really? Nice.
00:04:16
Speaker
they threw me into the semifinals or quarterfinals or something and ended up racing one of our friends thomas ball in naughty by nature he's one of the fastest his truck is really fast i've grown up watching that truck win back to back to back when chris lieback drove it so i was a little intimidated but i went out there ran my race and kept it pretty straight and came into the turn pretty even but I think because he had some power steering and I had nothing, it he kind of got me out of turn. So coming into the turn, we were about dead even, and it was a truck length coming out of the turn, and it kind of just stayed there until a finish line.
00:04:54
Speaker
Yeah, I've seen the video posted of that race, and you were right there side by side, like you said. that was awesome. the hu going up against one of the best, like you said, to race and stay there. I think it would have been a lot closer if you would have had power steering.
00:05:11
Speaker
um But, yeah, congratulations on your weekend other than the power steering and everything else. yeah So we're going to go ahead, um now that we got your race weekend kind of out of the way, yeah give us a little back story and everything on what got you started into the racing scene, bud.
00:05:32
Speaker
So as long as I can remember, I've grown up watching Uncle Adam and Uncle Ryan Weston and everybody racing mega trucks and monster trucks all over the place.
00:05:43
Speaker
And I'd say since I could talk right, Dad, I've said I want to do that one day. That's going to be me one day. And then. When I was about four years old, Weston got into the first version of the Bob Hog Megatruck and I was like, Dad, I want to follow in Weston's footsteps. so i want to do it how he did. So I started out in power wheels at four years old and o eventually we got a really fast power wheels. We got a little silver F-150 power wheels that we put a custom frame underneath and a Toyota starter motor in. and hooked it up to what, like 48 volts or something? like Yeah, 48 volts to a Toyota. smell
00:06:25
Speaker
And that blew up every time I raced it because the motor would just get burnt out. So I did that. Eventually, I got too big for power wheels, couldn't fit in them anymore. And then i was kind of done with that stuff for probably a year or two, maybe three.
Family Passion and Support in Racing
00:06:42
Speaker
Then one day, one of my friends, Jesse Turley, got in a tough truck, and I was like,
00:06:48
Speaker
Hey, he doesn't have a license and he's racing tough trucks. Because ever since I was little, my dad said, well, when you get a license, we'll get you a tough truck or a mega truck and we'll get you going. And I was like, he doesn't have a license. He's in tough truck. Then Dennis walks up behind my dad and says, yeah, dad, go get him a tough truck. I'll let him race out here. So then as we got the name aggravator, I annoyed the crap out of him and aggravated him until I got a tough truck.
00:07:16
Speaker
Nice. Heck yeah. um Started out in power wheels and tough trucks. And then I did tough trucks for a while.
00:07:27
Speaker
And then I graduated to where I'm at now. I'll tell you what, that's a big step for, uh, for young men, your age and stuff to be where you're at right now, which is, it's amazing to see.
00:07:40
Speaker
Um, I'll be honest. I, I, I'm fortunate. i got I got three kids of my own. um they're They're older. um My son, he's the oldest.
00:07:52
Speaker
He's really taking a liking. um This will be his second year. He's going to be racing tough trucks with me. and Me and him are splitting driving time in our Jeep that we're building. So, yeah. Trying to get my my second oldest, my daughter one of my daughters.
00:08:06
Speaker
She's all about it. She'd rather watch than watch. actually get behind the wheel. So, I mean, it's cool. but But to see your generation this day and time, and I'm sure your dad can vouch for, because we grew up at era.
00:08:20
Speaker
If you were in the garage, you know, you you had it running through your veins. Most kids your age is video games, buddy. And here you're out here hanging with some of the best in the business and mega truck racing and give a run for their money. You know,
Megatruck Details and Racing Career Aspirations
00:08:34
Speaker
that's, it's amazing thing to hear about.
00:08:41
Speaker
So who's some of your biggest influences? Sorry. oh Go ahead. I was just trying to keep moving. Go ahead. What are you going to say? i was going to say, so it sounds like you've got some huge influences um for doing this stuff. yeah who would Right now, who whoses would you say is your biggest influence besides your dad?
00:09:05
Speaker
Probably... Teeny because ever since I was Weston, ever since I was little, I've watched him saying I want to do that. So I've grown up watching him and now I'm kind of where he started or not started, but I'm kind of where he was at when I was four years old.
00:09:22
Speaker
So I'd say he's probably one of my bigger and biggest influences that and Uncle Adam growing up watching him in monster trucks and racing the old Bad Company mega truck ripping around the park.
00:09:35
Speaker
Them two are probably my biggest influences. in these Yeah, you definitely got got a family there you guys have that got a legacy to live up to because I idolize Dennis big time. so um on the on For your racing and stuff, what style of Mega Truck do you have?
00:09:58
Speaker
I mean, I know personally, but I don't know. I have what's classified as a one ton super truck, which is pretty much very similar chassis to most of the mega trucks. Only the only thing that separates um us from a full blown mega truck is we have one ton axles and anything one ton and under is classified as a one ton super truck and mega trucks are any or two and a half ton axles or larger. okay And really the only differences between the two are one tons tend to be a little bit lighter and sometimes even a little faster.
00:10:40
Speaker
Like we've been to places like Twitty's Mudbog where they don't have enough trucks in either class. So they just combine the two class into one big class. And back when Duke Bohannon had the Wicked Frog mega truck, that was a one ton that went out and woofed up everybody. So, but the only real real difference is axle size. I mean, we have a lot of similar motors and everything. Don't forget about Mike Snyder. Oh, and Mike Snyder. Mike Snyder, he's one of our fast one-ton guys. He'll go to places like Dennis' for North versus South where it's just one big V-tread class, one-tons, megas, everything. Like last year, he went up he went out against some of the fastest.
00:11:21
Speaker
um mega trucks in the country and one north versus south in a one ton think it was bogging for boobies it was yeah it was bogging for boobies rank one north versus south right yeah really really fast he rank actually holds the record at dennis's track with 15 seconds around the whole track it's one crazy fast truck nice yeah right
00:11:45
Speaker
so also another thing your dad sent me some stuff that i'm gonna run down with him um But another thing I wanted to congratulate you on, didn't get to, for being 14 years old. I hear you're going to a monster truck school and stuff. Get to do that while you're going to high school. so Yep, here in a couple of weeks we're going down to Morgan Twin, North Carolina for the horse is it Horsepower Park. Horsepower Park, Kayla Savage and her family. Yep, they're going to let me hop in the USA 1 monster truck.
00:12:16
Speaker
That's what I was going to say. Whatever. I don't know who knows what body is on it or whatever it is. But Kayla's truck, she's going to. Her and him are pretty close to the same size. So we think he'll fit in her seat.
00:12:28
Speaker
Oh, yeah. question for you, Dad. What do you think about that, stepping up to the big the big leagues like that? Pretty excited for him and nervous? As long as he doesn't have to pay for it. I couldn't be more happy and more excited to get this opportunity for him. I mean, this has been a lifelong goal of his, and to see him reach it you know so early in life is really, really,
Sportsmanship and Overcoming Challenges
00:12:52
Speaker
really cool. I mean, his mom and I have always tried to teach him that – you know win or lose always be a good sport and be there for your fans you know sign autographs try to keep your your uh mentality positive try to keep your energy positive and you know don't complain just go out there and have a good time and have fun and as long as you continue to do that you'll go far you know if you're good sport and you're good to your fans things will work out in the end and so we've been waiting you know
00:13:21
Speaker
I shouldn't say we've been waiting, but we've been planning and preparing him for this for, you know, as long as he's wanted to do it and then try to teach him all the ins and outs of what it takes to be a monster truck driver. Because, you know, a lot of, a lot of kids will see that and be like, Oh yeah, I want to go drive a monster truck someday. That's what I want to do. But.
00:13:40
Speaker
They don't realize like the time and effort it puts in actually get to that stage in like both the mental, you have to have the willpower to be able to get there, but also a lot of Monster Jam drivers take physical abuse from those trucks, jumping way, way up in the air and landing funky.
00:14:00
Speaker
So you got to be able to handle what it takes to be be up at that level of driving. ah Yeah, and people, and honestly, and people think they can just jump in, get showed how to do the controls. They don't realize the physical physical aspect of driving one of those things.
00:14:18
Speaker
Yeah, and you've got to be able to tell when you're going a little too fast and when it's about big flipping the turns and you got to be able to have the quick reaction time and quick thinking to know what to do. it's It's a lot trickier than it may look because a lot of times when people are watching Monster Jam professionals, those are seasoned veterans and trained people who've been doing this for a few years or they've had a lot of practice, and so they make it look easy. Yeah. Oh, yeah, especially Adam and Ryan.
00:14:48
Speaker
yeah Yeah. The thing that we've, you know, that I've kind of studied and watched over the years and tried to prepare him for is, you know, being a, you know, whether it's Monster Jam or whether it's one of the independent teams or, you know, wherever you're going race with, you know, being a monster truck driver, there's a lot more to it than just going up and showing up at the track and and racing. You know, it's it's a lot of it is about promoting the sport, promoting the race that you're going to. Signing autographs. Signing autographs. Being there for the fans and being a positive influence on all those people that are coming out to support you. Because without the fans, there is no sport.
00:15:27
Speaker
So you've you've got to stay a positive role model. He's got to keep being a good kid. And he is. He's a really good kid. I'm really proud of him. But, ah you know, that...
00:15:38
Speaker
maintaining a positive image has a lot to do with this. So, I mean, you know, nobody wants to see a complainer. Nobody wants to see somebody that's, you know, whining and crying about how they lost the race. You know, you've got to always find something positive. So whether it's, you know,
00:15:53
Speaker
Whether we come, you know, we go out to an event and we beat three guys or we beat 30 guys, we're just happy about, you know, whatever we can be happy about. you know You know, if we go through an event and we load the truck on a trailer by ourselves and we didn't break nothing, hey, that's a win. You know, if we go to an event and and we don't come in last, hey, that's a win, you know. And if we actually win, hey, that's a big win. You know, we always find little things to celebrate, whatever it is. You know, we always find something to be happy about.
00:16:18
Speaker
And I think that's really important to anybody that's getting into the sport because anybody that's in motorsports knows that like we're not in it for the money. Like anybody from... Oh, no. No.
00:16:31
Speaker
You're never going to make as much money in the sport as you put into it. And it's's it's just something that's really a lot of fun to do. And it's a great passion. And it's
Technical Aspects and Racing Mishaps
00:16:42
Speaker
You know, it's something that if that's what drives your heart and you want to follow it, then, you know, hopefully you'll get to the point someday where you get to drive somebody else's truck. And that's what I'm hoping for him will happen some days that, you know, someday he'll be out of my pocketbook and then somebody else's.
00:16:58
Speaker
he he' be He'll be the new hired gun new hired gun that everybody will be like, hey, we want Jackson and in our truck. be Are you booked? you know And and and in a matter of time, the way things are going for you, buddy, at your young age, I look in the next five or six years, man, that we could be watching you racing for anybody, dude.
00:17:20
Speaker
You've got a lot of opportunity ahead of you.
00:17:25
Speaker
um Actually, there was one comment that I wanted to read out to you. um Mudbuster Racing said number one fan of you. I know I got to up on the screen there, but i wanted to I wanted to shout that out personally because that's what it's all about when you when you got that kind of support and stuff behind you, man. it's And like your dad said, that's your drive your drive for what you're doing is it's unheard of for most people, most kids. I mean, and it's great. You're doing it.
00:17:59
Speaker
um true That's actually one of my close friends, Hunter Crowley. um He helps us in the shop. He helps us work on the truck. We help him work on his, he races tough trucks. And so that's one of my friends that I've been hanging out with and help. He's helped us a lot. We've helped him.
00:18:19
Speaker
We kind of just, I guess we're kind of like a crew. i guess we help each other out. We're close friends. Yeah. Like Brad, I'll mention Brad again. He mentioned you guys and everything else, how much he enjoyed watching you come up through and being part of your growth and in this too.
00:18:39
Speaker
brad's Brad's an awesome guy. And you got, and you honestly, you, You guys have yourself surrounded with some amazing people um to help you with this and build.
00:18:51
Speaker
So what's it like turning wrenches on the MegaTruck, man, at your age? It's not easy. Sometimes it gets pretty frustrating, like, when something doesn't work the way it's supposed to. and But it's just one of those things, kind of, I guess, if you want to be able to keep going and keep promoting yourself and work your way up to your big dream of whatever it is, you got to be able to put in the work and the effort and the time to keep yourself going.
00:19:22
Speaker
man And while that question's up, I do want to mention that we wouldn't be where we are with today without a lot of the people that have helped us along the way. and And you see their names on the side of the truck. I mean, I'll go through them real quick and then Jackson. Go ahead. Tell about what Brad's done for us.
00:19:43
Speaker
Well, Brad Kovacs and Phil phil Hall Jr., they helped us build the truck and they've helped us work on it and get it ready for races. And we help Brad get his truck going a lot.
00:19:55
Speaker
But Brad actually, he saw me in a tough truck and we were kind of talking about getting me into mega trucks and stuff. And he said, well, Hey, if you want a mega truck chassis, I'll help you guys out and I'll build you one and I'll give you a good deal on it. If you guys want to be a help, be a part of it and help me build it and stuff.
00:20:16
Speaker
And so we took it to fill Phil's house and built it for what, close to a year probably. No, it was not when we started in December and we finished in May. Yeah, well, so, yeah. So, five six months. Six months. Six months. That's that's pretty good.
00:20:33
Speaker
Yeah. That's not bad at all. Yeah, and that started out from a total wreck truck that I rolled really, well, not badly, but the truck just wasn't built all that good. so It didn't have a real good cage. you know It wasn't real sick. It was more of deathtrap. It didn't have good brakes. Yeah.
00:20:51
Speaker
think a few times i called it a coffin wheels that truck didn't last very long we got it we got his first mega truck which was an old hill and hole truck which was it was really fast for a six cylinder hill and hole truck and that was a good starting place for him and so you know it was it was a really good straight line truck it wasn't really it it had a really long wheel base and a real really really narrow axle so it wasn't really built to be a mega truck but we kind of turned it into one and jackson made uh you know four or five races with it before he came in really let's see i made little 316 virginia and then i made half a pass in delaware so that's four and a half four and a half races and uh yeah he he was cooking down the the back stretch looked over right before the turn and realized that he was head and head with uh outlaw one of the one of our other friends that's in premier mega truck racing and
00:21:49
Speaker
instead of hitting the brakes and making nice turn like you're supposed to. That thing didn't have brakes. I was, I came in the turn off the last roller. I came off the roller and I was standing on the brakes and I was like, this thing is not slowing down. And I saw was right next to it and I was like, what's the worst that could happen? So I floored it and it comes right around the turn. It starts sliding on the grass. Then it digs through the grass, catches and goes up in the air.
00:22:14
Speaker
It slung my battery 30 feet up into the air and into the woods. Oh, my goodness. Pretty good little wreck. The battery survived. The cage was strong enough to hold through one rollover. It it it protected him that day. and Thankfully, he had a nice, well-mounted, butler-built seat in there that kept him nice and safe, and he walked out without a scratch. but couple trees wow couple A couple little bruises, but nothing major. and Then we decided after that wreck that that the chassis probably wouldn't survive another crash like that, so it was time to rebuild.
00:22:45
Speaker
It's time to build it? Heck yeah. That's awesome. Those guys helped you get you get you that chassis and everything to where it's at, where you're at now. So that's, ah yeah, that was actually the thing. Your dad sent me a thing, but I take we just answered a question about the Delaware wreck. So that was that was knocked off the checklist of questions asked on that one. So.
00:23:09
Speaker
And who else said who else do you have, buddy, that you want to you want to describe and give shout-out to for helping you guys out, man? Brad and Phil, and we have Alex Lindenball, who does a lot of the fabrication.
00:23:23
Speaker
stuff for us with talent fabrication up in Virginia Beach. He helps us with fabricating, getting new parts installed. Like when I was, so I'll say another thank you to Brad. He got me into the Monsters versus Megas w race, which was my first ever paid event. That didn't matter if I won or lost, I was getting paid either way.
00:23:44
Speaker
He got into that stuff with them and um went up there. ended up doing really good. i barely beat one of our friends, Mike, that drives a truck called Thunderstruck.
00:23:57
Speaker
Somehow, big blur motor against my little 460 truck. so luck but oh yeah Then i got a buy run, so I just kind of took it easy, kind of hopped up over all the jumps, and we didn't notice, but the pat that last pass before the buy run, i had actually cracked my housing, but because it was a speedway, we thought maybe it was just the bank, and I had a bad seal or something, so it was kind of sure what happened. But I had actually cracked my axle housing. So then I went up against Uncle Gary driving King Sling.
00:24:32
Speaker
And i actually had two wheel drive, left the line and nothing but spin. And I watched him take off and I was like, dang, I knew this was going to be a blowout, but not this bad. And I'm slipping and sliding all over the place and I come off the last jump.
00:24:46
Speaker
and I didn't feel it. And the truck was driving and steering just fine. I get back to the pits and park it and my dad's looking like this and I'm like, what did something break? And I get out in the truck, say to chow. And once some ti to the tire was all twisted up like this while the other one was like normal. Oh oh no.
00:25:04
Speaker
So Alex, we got it. We got it up to the shop. um Probably about two days after We got it back home and washed up and cleaned up.
00:25:19
Speaker
And we ripped the axle out and get a new axle and he helps us fab up a new brace. And so far it's held up pretty good. So he's helped us with a lot of fabrication stuff. We got Hunter and Chris Crowley, who we've already mentioned that help us work on the truck. And Chris is building us a so couple race motors for backups and stuff. so Nice.
00:25:41
Speaker
Heck yeah. Cody Carlton, who we reached with Carlton Motorsports, he's actually a local dirt track racer around here, who we reached out to for some headers because we got a new motor and the headers we had didn't fit. And so
Family Dynamics and Support in Racing Scene
00:25:56
Speaker
we made some spider leg looking zoomies that didn't weren't that good for the motor. So we reached out and- He gave us a price and we were kind of in and then he said, well, I like what you're doing and I think you got some potential. So I'll help you out. And he built us a set of headers with a good discount on it. And so far they've been really good for the motor. I love the way they sound.
00:26:18
Speaker
And we got obviously the monster truck driving school and Butler built seats who we've mentioned anywhere else. No, but I will say with the monster truck driving school, yeah, mom and dad, the big sponsors. i was going to say, don't forget mom and dad. Yeah. but and With the monster truck driving school, you know, one of the things that we told them that we were gonna do from the start was, you know, as we go to all these events, we got their sticker on the side, but we also sell raffle tickets at all the events that we go to for a monster truck driving school experience so that whoever wins the raffle can come and, you know,
00:26:55
Speaker
go along with us or go along at their own time whenever they schedule a time to uh you know get a chance to drive a monster truck of their own they start at seven years old so they have not only monster trucks but they've got the mini monsters and then they've got something that's kind of about the size of a mega truck for the teenagers pretty much what i yeah pretty much what he has okay yeah dollars each set ye and then they have the full-blown monster trucks for licensed drivers and adults they made a little exception for him but uh But ah so we've we've kind of struggled a little bit to sell tickets at some of these events just because there's so much going on and we're
00:27:33
Speaker
Off to not such a great we'll start with our season. you know We've had you know problems with our truck that we've been working on until wee hours of the morning and night before the race. So we haven't had a lot of time to like walk around and sell raffle tickets. So one of the things I want to tell anybody that's watching is you know watch for our Facebook page. We're to be posting a link to where all any of our fans can do like Venmo, Cash App, something like that.
00:27:54
Speaker
to get raffle tickets. They don't actually have to meet us at a race to get a raffle ticket. And we hope to sell those here in the next couple of months. We're going try to sell 170 raffle tickets, which equals a little over $3,000, which is about what the experience costs.
00:28:08
Speaker
And then maybe somebody will get to either come out the week that Jackson's racing and then go out there and drive a monster truck with him or schedule a time that works for them and and come out and enjoy the experience.
00:28:20
Speaker
that ah That is actually awesome to have. I wish they'd do stuff yeah somewhere around where I'm at here in Ohio. I mean, every now and then you'll get a promoter that'll do do a raffle car or something like that for a derby or anything.
00:28:36
Speaker
But to get an experience to go to a monster truck driving school for a day, that is yeah cool that'd be cool as all get out to have something like that. Yeah.
00:28:47
Speaker
Awesome, man. All right. We're going to have Jackson introduce Mama Aggravator. His mom whose mom's going to sit in with him for a couple minutes. So if you've got any mama questions, you can answer. Definitely. well Well, I'll definitely hit her with some. I've got a few anyway for her, too. Hi, there.
00:29:04
Speaker
was trying to chime in via Facebook, but I got booted out of Facebook when I got a new phone, and then it was lagging. So here I am. I apologize. Well, well welcome to welcome to Speedway Stories. um Like I told your husband and Jackson,
00:29:19
Speaker
I appreciate you guys taking the time tonight to come up and very much so let this this amazing young man share his his passion and his story of his career and so far.
00:29:31
Speaker
um So how nervous do you get at races? I mean, now or three years ago? because those are two is All around, basically. From the time you started to now, I mean, do you still get the nerve-wracking races?

Speaker
mom nerves whenever he straps into the straps into the truck i can honestly say i'm more excited now i used to get really nervous when when they first my dear sweet boys got this truck and the very first thing i think i said i was like safety you will not drive this thing in its current form so yeah because we got it and it was a beat up old junkyard truck no roll cage stock seats oh Oh, I've been, me being a me and being a parent?
00:30:18
Speaker
Before I was even allowed to take it for a test drive around Uncle Adam's house on his track or anything, she was like, you have to have a seat and you have to have some sort of roll bar or roll cage or something.
00:30:32
Speaker
That one. so honestly safety first especially when you're playing with stuff stuff like that oh yeah that's all the way it is so it was really great to you know start with the jeep i will say that eased into it uh his first rollover the branchville mud bug guys and some of our southeast dot friends will always joke like don't wave to mom mr starstruck is my nickname now don't drive because he was waving to me on the sideline and yeah was looking at her and the return lane to the pits was right between two mud pits they had a shallow pit and a deep pit and the return lane was right between it and I was driving down the return lane and I was looking in the crowd from my mom and hadn't learned the lesson you you drive where you look so I was found her in the crowd I was waving and I slowly started turning the wheel and the next thing I know I go whoop and I'm laying on my side
00:31:25
Speaker
that's not no but man so That being said, you know, now when they mentioned the rollover in his s ten body, when he had that in the new truck before the new chassis was built, that was actually the first parents the first race my parents had ever come to to see him because it was some supposed to their house. So it was a grandma. right on She's kind of skeptical about the whole racing thing. for She's like, well, if he gets cra if he crashes, he's going to get hurt.
00:31:56
Speaker
and We always tell her and her sister Aunt Bonnie, I'm safer in that truck than I am driving in a normal car. I could get in i yeah run to whatever I wanted in that truck at 80 miles an hour and leave with nothing but a couple bruises probably. Totally.
00:32:14
Speaker
And so that was their first race there, made half a pass. And of course I was in the far lane and that outlaw truck come around the turn slinging a bunch of roost and everything. And I just disappeared in the roost. And then when the she was my in the video, you could actually hear my grandma go, where is he? And mom goes, he. I don't know why he's calling her grandma. He's never called her grandma a day in her life. bob sha Anyways.
00:32:40
Speaker
you could hear her say, where'd go? And mom says, he flipped. And she's like, what? And she like has a mini heart attack. I would have one. i was gonna say I'd had one and seen that. with If he was my kid, I'd be like...
00:32:55
Speaker
To be fair, ah Lee Sermon, if you're watching, he was right there at the ready to help him out. and lee ran in out It was a narrow chassis and it's kind of cramped in there and my window net didn't want to open and I started cool freaking out and I started trying to kick the windshield out. So Lee Sermon comes in, unbolts my window net and comes and pulls me out. And I'm like, thank you, because I started kicking out the windshield, getting ready to crawl off the windshield.
00:33:21
Speaker
I feel better knowing he's obviously well protected between the roll cage and the chassis that Brad and Phil and everybody's made. And he and Jarrett go through drills to access his fire extinguisher if he needs it. So my mama nerves have calmed down and some liquid courage definitely helps because I'm not driving.
00:33:44
Speaker
category I will say that, but but it's truly. You're good. He loves it, you know, so it's put on joy and bragging on him is makes me really proud.
00:33:57
Speaker
right I got a couple of shout outs in the comments. If you guys didn't see him on the screen, um Morgan Cornog is actually Matt Motorsports is. Hmm.
00:34:09
Speaker
uh, internet guy, he deals with a lot of the independent art, uh, monster trucks and stuff out in Oklahoma. He's in charge of helping put the mommy, uh, Oklahoma race that's coming on. And he, he, uh, said you're doing a great job and everything else. And plus Brad, Brad said it it's, uh, an honor being able to help, help you guys out and everything else. But I wanted to give those guys a shout out real quick in the comments, even though it's on the screen.
00:34:35
Speaker
Um, it's awesome to see people, uh, reaching out to you, man, because of the success and your drive for once again, for what you're doing. Thank you. And Misty Rose for her awesome pictures. She's not the only one, but she definitely calls us that. I've been going back through her stuff, checking out some of the older pictures.
00:34:57
Speaker
She kills it even with with the way she does. and They turn out awesome. I will say, since she wasn't able to go to VMS, I haven't seen any pictures from there yet by photographers but she takes it yeah um mud cat all about mud we've had some really really great photographer friends that are yeah but misty never fails to get some great pictures of me i I remember last year at the October race, King of the Megas at Virginia Motor Speedway. I told her I was doing freestyle and she's like, oh, cool. Do you want me to get any cool pictures? And i said pointed out this one jump and I said, yeah, I'm going back all the way up to the cornfield or the field in the back and I'm going hit it as fast as I can. So can you get your camera ready? And she said, yeah, I don't know how dark it'll be, but I'll get my i'll do my best. And so I sent the jump and she got a really good picture of it. was a little dark, but...
00:35:51
Speaker
It's still a good picture. She never fails to get some good pictures, and i always love her pictures. Nice. Yeah, and your ah your but buddy Hunter Crowley just commented, too, that we'll never forget everything that your guys' family has done to help him and and his racing career as well.
00:36:10
Speaker
He gave you a big shout-out there in the in the chat again. um Actually, i'm gonna have i will actually have him up on the show next Thursday night, believe or not. He'll reach out to me.
00:36:21
Speaker
He told me, and I said, I'll tune in and watch him. Yep. Yeah. right after Actually, right after your dad got a hold of me about setting up a time this time with you guys, he the two days later, he hit me up. I'm like, I'm more than happy.
00:36:36
Speaker
Bring it on. Get on, man. So where's your next big race going to be at, buddy?
00:36:46
Speaker
think. Dad, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think our next one's going to be at Mud Jam, which is a local track. Dennis Anderson's Muddy Motorsports Park in Curritup. It's going to be the Mud Jam race, I think, is what our next race who we're shooting for is. think it's the last of last weekend of May. Yep, it's May 30th. Nice.
00:37:07
Speaker
So in couple weeks, then. Racing starts at noon and gates open at 9. Nice. going to be right.
00:37:18
Speaker
So with your racing schedule for the summer, um does that driving school actually work with you um with your racing schedule? Yeah, so they're actually letting us kind of schedule when we want to come in and drive monster trucks. And they're letting us pick those weekends when we're not doing anything.
00:37:42
Speaker
racing megatruck wise. So yeah, they're actually working with us quite a bit to allow us to come in and get some practice. And this is his last week of school, which is also my mom teacher brain. It's like, go back. Why are you here so much? i like know Yeah, you'll have that. um Yeah, this is next week's my kids is last week up here in Ohio and stuff for them. They had to
Future Races and Community Support
00:38:08
Speaker
added three extra days on because of the snow days that we had this year. So They were actually supposed to get out this Friday, but unfortunately they're they're not.
00:38:18
Speaker
um So the biggest race for this year that out of the MegaTrucks series that you're in, the non-points races and stuff, what's the biggest race you're looking forward to this year in 2026,
00:38:35
Speaker
Um, as of right now, going to Twitty's truck's gone wild in November because I haven't been able to take my new truck up there yet because we were getting ready to when I rolled the S10 version of this truck and I've only ever had my tough truck slash DOT truck up there. So I'm really excited in November as long as the truck holds together until then, fingers crossed, to go up there and kind of meet meet some of my South Carolina friends I haven't seen in a while.
00:39:09
Speaker
and um yeah, distracting me. Sorry. oh well i was asking a question because there's a race that i love to go to up in masters and so there's there's a couple tracks in south carolina and where jackson has like met some demons for lack of a better way to describe it and i'm like ready for him to do it when we hopefully get things running smoothly so orangeberg I was
00:39:40
Speaker
Orangeburg and Masters Motorplex. And I wasn't sure. This is where I was trying to get insight if where the premier race was, but it's going to be at the Masters Motorplex. But we love Orangeburg as well. So. Okay.
00:39:52
Speaker
grangeberg i've struggled with actually the first time i went there i struggled with making it all the way around the track and you just kind of struggled with nerves there because don't know why i get really nervous there it's huge track the turn is it je man was so wide i could come through the mud pit full throttle and i didn't even have to lift coming into the turn and i could stay full throttle all the way around the turn And, um, and Orangeburg mom wasn't there. She was on a work vacation for this one. Work trip or trip, not vacation.
00:40:29
Speaker
Um, she wasn't able to make it, but I went out first pass laid down a really good pass. Had a lot of the guys that I am usually scared of, scared of me. They were one of our friends, Chandler Smiley. He's usually one of the top contenders. in South Carolina for DOT trucks.
00:40:47
Speaker
He came up to me after my pass or after we decided that the truck wasn't going to run because I came out of the pit and crossed the finish line and blew a fuse and the truck wasn't able to keep going on.
00:40:59
Speaker
He came up to us and was like, I know it really sucks that um that you weren't able to keep going, but I was actually kind of scared of meeting you in the finals or something because I knew I'd have to drive my butt off and he actually ended up and went on to win that day.
00:41:17
Speaker
But to continue on to your comment about tracks that or events that we're excited for, some of them I don't know knows about yet because I manage the schedule and I'm the one that kind of puts together which events we go to and I got a schedule with not over not only what he wants but what Mama's work schedule will allow and what my work schedule and everything else.
00:41:41
Speaker
I will say that we're very excited to be going back to Lebanon Valley Speedway this this summer, August, for Monsters vs. Megas. That'll be August 1st.
00:41:52
Speaker
and that yeah and And we're going to have plenty of spare parts with us this time, so we hope we can keep the truck going for the whole weekend and then not have to worry about breaking too much. And then the weekend after that, we may be going off to Ohio for another monster trucks versus mega truck type sort of kind of event. Well, if we... get invited. Kevin Willicki is kind of the promoter, the guy in charge of all that stuff. And there's a couple of trucks that he's already invited and he's kind of waiting to see and make sure that they've all been committed. But if a slot opens up, we're kind of we're we're we're on backup or we're on standby. So if that works out, we're done
00:42:36
Speaker
And nice lastly, I do want to point out, I don't know how many people are going to see this, but maybe we'll see what happens. Kayla Savage, who is obviously one of our biggest sponsors for Monster Truck Driving School. She's been thrown around the idea of having a an event at her track horsepower park and in morganton north carolina uh uh labor day weekend in september that's going to include monster trucks mega trucks mini monsters tough trucks it's going to be a whole horsepower kind of weekend with all kinds of yeah yeah horsepower mania
00:43:13
Speaker
different activities going on there so that's something that's still in the works not 100 positive on uh whether we'll pull it all together this year or if it'll be a future event for years of them coming but wanted to throw it out there so so you guys like and follow horsepower park to watch and see if that if that actually comes to life we'll probably know within the next uh month or so whether or not we're actually gonna be able to pull that off but if so it's It seemed to be you know probably six monster trucks, six megatrucks, handful of mini monster trucks going out there and showing what the minis can do. And then we'll get a pretty decent crowd of tough trucks as well. So it'll be all kinds of fun off-road racing. That'd be cool.
00:43:56
Speaker
Yeah, man. It'd be really cool. I do have one question from the comments, Morgan. It kind of goes back – it's from Morgan.
00:44:06
Speaker
he He wanted to know what it was like racing against Kingsling at West Lebanon. Well, i knew I was going to be blown out of the water and less by some miracle Gary made oopsie and crashed or broke or something. yeah but here Mom said down with Gary. But
00:44:29
Speaker
oh but I came up and I hadn't been in the top lane all weekend and because it's a speedway. It's sloped, so the bottom lane was actually flat and the other lane was tilted a little bit. And especially when they had two-wheel drive and breaking the back tires loose, I came off the line and immediately slid sideways and went off the first jump because I hadn't had that lane all night, so I didn't know.
00:44:51
Speaker
what it was going to do. and um, yeah, I kind of just sat there trying to keep my truck straight and go off the jumps halfway smoothly while I watched Gary kind of pull away.
00:45:04
Speaker
Nice. Um, well, Johnny, you got any questions? You said you had a couple you wanted to, you, you had, I thought you wanted to ask, like or did he answer them all with ah everything? A lot of them were kind of answered during the conversation. Dude, it's,
00:45:21
Speaker
i'm blown away kind of seeing progress where it's coming with well the generation coming up and you yourself man i'm proud you it's awesome yeah so i just saw comment pop up mike wittick who's a friend of ours from the tough truck racing days said uh are you faster than fifth grader and i thought that was pretty funny That was our first t-shirt. Yeah, when we first had it. Our second t-shirt. First one on tonight. Yeah, he's wearing the OG t-shirts. Oh, he's got one of the OG shirts on. One of our first Tough Truck Racing t-shirts that we actually had was Are You Faster a Fifth Grader on that. got it from a TV show. What was it? Yep, Smarter Than Fifth Grader. I remember that show. Oh, yeah.
00:46:12
Speaker
that was That was pretty funny, and it worked hand in hand with the whole aggravator theme, because when we were in Southeast DOT series, you know we weren't usually the fastest, but we weren't we were far from the bottom of the barrel, too. so We were kind of the middle of the pack, and it was always fun to see who would get aggravated that weekend, – Every once in a while, you know one of the bigger batter trucks that usually would beat us any day of the week would make a mistake, and he'd be right there on their tail and come take it away from him. so It was always funny to kind of throw that joke around. Oh, you just got beat by a fifth grader.
00:46:44
Speaker
well Now the but now the bad part and the sad part of it is is most of these guy older guys and stuff are getting beat by a 14-year-old, and that's that's awesome to see. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
00:46:57
Speaker
He's in eighth grade now getting and ready to go into ninth. So it's been a little while. I can't use that slogan anymore, but yeah it's still a lot of fun while we had it. Oh, yeah, definitely. yeah Yeah, that's the first time I've seen it used outside of that TV show Smarter Than a Fifth Grader. That's pretty cool you guys use that for racing.
00:47:14
Speaker
That is awesome. Oh, goodness. ah goodness ah So while we're at it, and kind of I'm trying to take a couple other questions ask. You want to go ahead and shout out your sponsors, man, that that helps back you guys besides mom and dad?
00:47:33
Speaker
Yeah. So, yeah, mom and dad, obviously. We got Monster Truck Driving School. Got dad's company, Cook Renovations. um We got Cody Carlton with Carlton Motorsports, map automotive performance, Chris and Hunter, talent fabrication, Alex, and then monster fabrication with Brad and Phil. and PJ services, which is Phil's company with like repair and landscaping.
00:48:04
Speaker
And we have Butler built seats. um Anything else? Can we just give a shout out to all the other racers and drivers? who you're morgan You're more than welcome to. Go ahead. I've said this to couple of the drivers over the weekend and even at prior races. It's the only sport that I've experienced in my life where everybody jumps in to pitch in and help and just be there. so like Underwoods this past weekend. ja There's others. I am probably going to forget, but
00:48:38
Speaker
everybody just wants to help. And i it could be your rival, your arch enemy, the guy who's been trying to beat for years, but always just manages slip away from you. And he'll hear you're having a issue and he'll come jump in and help you. And it's really nice. And, Like mom said, the Underwoods this weekend, they gave us a steering pump that didn't work. They gave us a new order. That wasn't the fix.
00:49:05
Speaker
It's not to say that it didn't work. It just didn't solve it. We haven't figured out what the problem yet. My goal to do with drivers. Yeah, and they get they always help us and they gave us a new orbital valve. All the drivers always pitch in to help each other. And when we hear somebody's having an issue, if we have an idea that might work or if we know how to fix it or if we have a part they could use, we always pitch in and help and do our part that we can do to help.
00:49:30
Speaker
And I want to give you a huge, huge shout out to Joey Hilton and Landon Hilton. Joey is the one of the owners and promoters of Premier Megatruck Racing. yeah hey Landon is his son who who races in the series. One of my friends that I've raced a couple times. They actually, we got to the first race of the season with a brand new race motor and we didn't really have it dialed in yet and we had some issues and we had...
00:49:57
Speaker
and we weren't able to race and the motor got all messed up. And they actually came in. We were thinking about maybe quitting the series and going just to kind of do our own. Take it easy. Take it easy. Have pocketbook. Yeah.
00:50:15
Speaker
And have just a relaxed season and go to some of our fun tracks and see some friends and actually they were like, well, we don't want you to drop out of series. We want y'all to be able to have fun. And we got Landon just got a brand new blower motor in his truck, but we have his old motor. And so Landon and Joey come up to us and say, Hey, we'll give you the motor. Y'all can have the motor. And that's actually the motor that's in my truck right now that I've been doing really good with. Yep. That is awesome. yeah Continuing that same line of thought, Jeff Glass is another competitor slash friend of ours. um So...
00:50:54
Speaker
during that same time you know i think it was you know saturday the morning of the race you know when we realized that the motor that we'd spent most of the off-season building was just it had some quirks going on that we weren't going to be able to figure out in time for the race and we had to tear the motor down and and we're going have to still go through it and figure out what exactly you know is going on with it that that's not that's making it not work right but um you know when Joey and Landon offered us the motor uh Jeff was there and he said hey if you need a place to stay you need somebody help put the motor in you know let me know so I literally called him up Sunday morning and I was like I hope you're serious because uh I'm taking a couple days off of work and I literally went up there Monday morning after the race I got the motor from Joey the Monday afternoon and then he took the camp Monday yeah I took the camper and I stayed at Jeff's place and uh
00:51:45
Speaker
So Monday night we we we got the motor taken out and then Tuesday, you know, Wednesday we started putting in and then, you know, by Wednesday morning we had it all in, dialed up, ready to go and I drove home. So just like in my old Jeep, we kept breaking axles and stuff. So we got really good where we could change out a whole rear front rear axle within a day or two. We've gotten really good at changing motors in this truck. It usually takes right and hours of solid labor and we can change out a motor. i thought about the my
00:52:19
Speaker
yeah We don't want to talk about all that.
00:52:24
Speaker
But yeah, I mean, it it's awesome. Um, I, the motor sport motor sports family. Um, I I've got it up here in Ohio with my tough truck family. Uh,
00:52:36
Speaker
my drag and drive and drag racing family. But I've noticed more in the off-road families are more tight-knit than the other communities that I've ever been part of.
00:52:47
Speaker
Like you guys said, it could be your biggest rival, everything else when it comes to racing. But yeah, they'll get their shirt off their back if you need something that they can help. And and you couldn't ask for better.
00:52:59
Speaker
Well, and a blessing in disguise was, you know, even though we weren't able to race that first weekend of the series, some good friends and bars from New Jersey with the Freedom Express mega truck, they made their first pass and it was a killer smoking and pass, but they blew out a shock on their first pass. And I went running it up to them. I went up running right up to them. I said, hey. We got a truck just sitting there. We can't drive it. Do you need a shock? And they said, yeah.
00:53:24
Speaker
So we went quick, you know, stole a shock off our truck, threw it on their truck, and they went a second pass, blew another shock. So same thing. right, let's go grab another one. And we just, our truck, we're going to be in the parts truck for the day. For anybody that broke anything, they rob parts off of our truck for a little while to keep them going. And, they actually know that day i think they came in third place and then the day but you know it's it's always fun to support your friends and watch them do well and everybody else helps us out just as much as we try to help help everybody else out and they've helped us like if we're having an issue and they're there they're always helping us with ideas and stuff and and that's what it's all that's what it's all about yeah when you're when you're in the pits and everything else
00:54:07
Speaker
It's a giant friends and family, mostly family. I throw the friends thing out the window. But
Focus and Strategy in Racing
00:54:13
Speaker
as soon as you guys line up and stuff, you kind of got to turn that blinder on like, yep, this ain't my friend or anything right now. We're competitors is as the race getting ready to race. so
00:54:27
Speaker
Yeah. So did you have your blinder? but Don't worry so much about who the truck is in the lane next to you. Just you know pick your line, look at the ruts, look at the track, try to figure out where you want to race and try to concentrate on going as fast as you possibly can. and Whatever happens in the other lane, you don't need to be thinking about. You just think about trying to make your fastest pass. Exactly.
00:54:51
Speaker
You could be going ah up against one of the fastest guys there, one of the fastest guys in the sport, and you think you're going totally get blown out of the water. And this has happened to me a couple times and you end up going, launching off the trans break and you're not paying attention to them.
00:55:10
Speaker
And then you get to the turn or you get to the finish line and you're like, Oh, they broke. Oh, they crashed. I win. Yeah. Yep. That's that's like the the philosophy. i don't know if your dad would do it.
00:55:25
Speaker
And it's like you see if you get tunnel vision, you got to keep that focus where it's just you, your truck, and that that part of the track you're on.
00:55:36
Speaker
After the race is done, then you can find out, well hey, this person broke or like you said, you know something happened to them. But yeah, that's the main thing you got to do. And for you having that such a young age, you're going to make us old guys look bad.
00:55:50
Speaker
I mean, you're already doing it with having tunnel vision at 14 years old racing. I mean, a lot of us old guys, just a little distraction anymore usually costs us a race. Yeah.
00:56:05
Speaker
And we try to stay focused on what we can control and not worry about what we can't. We can't control
Closing Remarks and Gratitude
00:56:10
Speaker
the guy that's landing up next to us. All we can control control is our truck and trying to pick the best line and trying to make our truck and our race be as fast as we can possibly make it.
00:56:20
Speaker
Yes, sir. That's exactly right. um Other than that, unless you guys got anything else, I'll be honest with you. I really I'm out of questions now because we pretty much hit everything on the head and I've really enjoyed tonight's show. I'm here.
00:56:36
Speaker
Thank you guys. If do you guys have anything else. Oh, any time you guys are more than welcome. Anytime you ever want to come back up or whatever later on in the year. um I'll message you. You guys message me. I'd be more than happy to find out, especially at the end of the race season. It'd be awesome to get a recap of how your year went.
00:56:56
Speaker
But I and really appreciate you guys coming up, taking the time. We're kind of a no-name podcast, making a name for ourselves. And I'm sure I started my but my best friend, honestly. I'll be straight with you.
00:57:10
Speaker
I started this podcast over five years ago, this network. But he's actually been doing... our Saturday shows where we invite everybody up and just kind of hang out. Um, he's been doing it almost 10 years, but I'm going on my second year of doing this motor sports show and the people I've met as guests are here. And I'm going to say it now. You guys has been actually one of the best ones I've had on here.
00:57:35
Speaker
Um, I've had some amazing people, including Brad and everybody, but to have this, this here, um, so far as top, the top, the guest list. And I've had some pretty good people on here.
00:57:47
Speaker
And I appreciate you guys taking your time tonight and spending an hour of your night with us and sharing your story. And I wish you the best of luck the rest of the season. And yeah, probably around October, maybe even after November, if you get to go to that race, we'll set something up and we'll have you back up here say you guys can recap your season and everything. But I will definitely be pulling for you and hitting up all your Facebook links and stuff. So And I'll stay in contact. And like I said, thank you guys. um If you guys got any other shout-outs before I drop you down and we wrap this up, you're more than welcome to give them out.
00:58:23
Speaker
I think you we're good. The only question I have for you is where are you guys based out of? I'm actually based out of Ohio. um okay My co-host is actually out of New York. we met We actually become friends through the network on that Saturday panel. Don't.
00:58:40
Speaker
I was flying solo doing this show, and one night i I keep bearded dragons and snakes, and he used to keep leopard geckos. I used to do a reptile show too. and geto He's got a gecko. Nice, man. Nice, man.
00:58:55
Speaker
So we headed off talking about animals, and ye one night he's like, i'm in we started talking motocross. I'm like, hey, by the way, welcome to Monday night. You're now my new co-host, and it's been that way ever since. So it's been a good thing.
00:59:10

That's the one that we may or may not be coming to. We're kind of an alternate right now. Let me know whose legs I got to break so you guys can come. If one of the guys happens to break their truck and can't get it fixed in time, or you know if we get a phone call, we're kind of on standby. So we may be at that show too.
