Speaker
where you can let me know but that you watched the video today. And if you would like to tell me something about what you enjoyed about the reading as well. Well, without any further ado, let's get started reading on our January 7th day, where we are going to pick up on Genesis 20. And we're going to hear about how Abraham lies again.
00:02:11
Speaker
Abraham moved to Gerar for a while. He told people there that his wife Sarah was his sister. So the king brought Sarah to his palace and he planned to make her his wife. But God came to the king one night in a dream. God said to the king, you are in big trouble. Sarah is already married.
00:02:36
Speaker
Abraham told me she was his sister, said the king. I didn't mean to do anything wrong. I know, said God. Now give Sarah back to Abraham. And if you don't, then you and your family will die. The king called his leaders together early the next morning. He told them about his dream. They were very scared. Then the king called for Abraham.
00:03:05
Speaker
Why did you do this to me? asked the king. I thought you would kill me, said Abraham. That way you could have Sarah to be your wife. Then the king gave Abraham sheep and cows and servants, and he gave Sarah back to Abraham too. The king said, live wherever you want to live in my land.
00:03:31
Speaker
Then the king spoke to Sarah. I was wrong to bring you to my palace, he said. So I will give 1,000 pieces of silver to Abraham, and this will make up for the wrong that I did.
00:03:47
Speaker
Genesis 21, two sons. God kept his promise to Sarah. She and Abraham had a son, even though they were very old.
00:04:00
Speaker
The baby came just when God said it would. Abraham named the baby Isaac. Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac was born. God has let me laugh, said Sarah. Anyone who hears about this will laugh and be happy too. Who would have thought Abraham and I would have a But I had a baby boy for old Abraham. One day Abraham had a party for Isaac.
00:04:30
Speaker
But Ishmael, Hagar's son, made fun of Isaac. So Sarah told Abraham, get rid of Hagar and Ishmael. I don't want Ishmael to get anything that belongs to Isaac. Now Abraham was upset because Ishmael was his son too. But God said, don't be upset. Listen to Sarah. Isaac is the son that a whole nation of people will come from.
00:04:59
Speaker
but I'll make Ishmael's family into a nation too." So early the next day, Abraham gave Hagar some food. He gave her some water and a bag made from animal skins. Then he sent Hagar and Ishmael away. Hagar carried the food and water on her shoulders. She and Ishmael went off into the desert. One day Hagar and Ishmael drank the last of the water.
00:05:29
Speaker
Hagar set Ishmael under a bush. Then she sat nearby. I can't stand to see him die. She saw it and she started crying. Ishmael was crying too. God heard him. God's angel called out. What's wrong, Hagar?
00:05:53
Speaker
Don't be scared. God hears Ishmael crying. Go, hold his hand. Tell him to get up. I'm going to make his family into a big nation. Then God let Hagar see a well of water. She filled her bag with water. She gave Ishmael a drink.
00:06:15
Speaker
So God watched over Ishmael. Ishmael grew up in the desert. He was good at using a bow and arrow. He married a woman from Egypt. Now the king of Jarar spoke to Abraham. I know God takes care of you, he said. I have been kind to you, so promise that you will be kind to me. I promise, said Abraham, but your servants took one of my wells.
00:06:44
Speaker
I didn't know that, said the king. I don't know who did it. So Abraham and the king made a deal. Abraham took seven lambs to the king. I'm giving you these lambs, said Abraham. This shows I'm telling the truth. I dug this well. Then the king went home. Abraham planted a tree there and worshiped God.
00:07:14
Speaker
He lived in that land for a long time.
00:07:20
Speaker
Abraham's test, Genesis 22. One day God gave Abraham a test. God called, Abraham, I'm here, said Abraham. Isaac is your only son, said God. He is the son you love. Take him to the land of Moriah. I will show you a mountain.
00:07:44
Speaker
put Isaac on an altar, and he will be the gift you give me on the altar." So the next morning Abraham got up early. He put a saddle on his donkey. He cut wood to put on the altar. Then he took Isaac and two servants, and they left. They traveled for two days.
00:08:05
Speaker
The next day, Abraham looked out over the land. He saw the place where God wanted him to go. So Abraham told his servants, keep the donkey here and Isaac and I will go worship God and then we'll come back. Isaac carried the wood and Abraham carried the fire and the knife for the gift. They would give a gift to God on the altar.
00:08:34
Speaker
Abraham and Isaac walked on together. Father, said Isaac. Yes, said Abraham. We have wood, said Isaac. We can make a fire. But where's the lamb for the altar? God will give it to us, said Isaac, Abraham. And they walked on.
00:09:01
Speaker
At last they came to the place God told Abraham about. Abraham piled up stones to make an altar. He put the wood on it. Then he put Isaac on the wood on the altar. Isaac would be the gift on the altar. But God's angel called out, Abraham, I'm here, said Abraham. Take Isaac off the altar, he said.
00:09:30
Speaker
Now I know God is the most important one to you. You were going to obey God. You were going to give him your only son. Then Abraham looked up. He saw a ram. His horns were stuck in a bush. So Abraham took Isaac off the altar. He got the ram. He put it on the altar as the gift for God. God's angel called to Abraham again.
00:10:00
Speaker
Here's what God says. You were going to give me your only son. So I promise I'll give my riches to you. Isaac's children will become a very big family. There will be as many people as stars in the sky. There will be as many as sand on the beach. God will come to all nations on earth and it's all because you obeyed me.
00:10:30
Speaker
Abraham and Isaac went down the mountain. The servants were waiting for them and they all went home. And that's the end of our reading for today.

Reflections and Faithfulness

00:10:49
Speaker
Well, we saw today's story that Abraham first lied and once again, asked Sarah to lie for him as well. And they said that he was her brother and that Sarah was his sister. And once again, we see that God is the one who actually stepped in to protect Sarah from being married to another man. Once again, it was not Abraham's lie or Sarah's lie that saved them because the king was going to make her his wife.
00:11:25
Speaker
And the God said, you may not do that. She's already someone's wife. And God was gracious when the king said that he didn't know. God said, I know you don't know. That's why I'm telling you.
00:11:41
Speaker
And so our God is so gracious to take care of us. And He knows our hearts. He knows if we mean to do something wrong or if we don't. And if we don't mean to do something wrong, and yet God gives us conviction in our heart that something that we are doing is not right, then it is up to us to then listen to God and do what He is telling us to do is right and to ask for forgiveness.
00:12:10
Speaker
and to not do that wrong thing that we were going to do, not knowing that it was initially wrong. And then we saw Abraham's faithfulness to God and how his faithfulness is actually part of and our reward because we are part of Abraham's family. We are part of God's family because Abraham obeyed God.
00:12:40
Speaker
And we are as many as the stars in the sky. You can't count how many brothers and sisters we have in the body of Christ. And I'm so thankful to Abraham for his obedience to God, ah to put Isaac on the altar when God told him. And then God said, don't, I know you would have, but you don't need to. And I'm so glad that God has taken us as his family as to be his children.
00:13:11
Speaker
So thank you for joining me today as we heard this wonderful story about Abraham's faithfulness to God and how God saved Abraham and Sarah.
