Introduction to Mitochondria and Energy Production

00:00:00
Speaker
You may remember from your biology classes in school what mitochondria are. In case you need a refresher, basically our mitochondria are the tiny little organelles in our cells whose primary function is to produce the energy that we need to live. They do have other important jobs though, it's not their only function.

ATP Production: The Role of Mitochondria

00:00:19
Speaker
Now, to create energy, what they do is they burn or oxidize the glucose and the fatty acids that we take in from our diet to produce a molecule called ATP, adenosine triphosphate, which is basically the molecule we use to carry energy in the body. So most processes in the body require ATP. So this energy is required to do everything, basically, for our gut, for our brain, to move our muscles, etc.

ASD and Mitochondrial Dysfunction

00:00:47
Speaker
And here is a quote from a study that states, individuals with ASD who also have mitochondrial dysfunction are reported to have more severe behavioral and cognitive disabilities and are prone to neurodevelopmental regression compared to those with ASD without mitochondrial dysfunction.
00:01:06
Speaker
So you might not be aware about how prevalent this is in autistic children, but this is an incredibly important topic to discuss for a number of reasons, which I will get into in

Metabolic Disturbances in Autism

Speaker
a second. So the research is increasingly showing that a large subset of autistic individuals have abnormalities in mitochondrial function.
00:01:25
Speaker
This makes it one of the most prevalent metabolic disturbances in autism.

Types of Mitochondrial Dysfunction

00:01:30
Speaker
Now, there's two basic types of mitochondrial dysfunction that we can classify. The first one is primary mitochondrial dysfunction. This refers usually to some type of defect in a gene directly involved in the function of the mitochondrial systems.
00:01:46
Speaker
And this is classified as mitochondrial disease in the medical world. And it's actually not as common as the secondary mitochondrial dysfunction, which refers to other metabolic or genetic abnormalities outside of the mitochondria that impair the ability of these little organelles to produce energy. And we will look at what causes this type of secondary dysfunction in a second as well.
