Today's reading comes to us from 1Samuel Chapter 8. Today we will read  about Samuel's sons not judging the way Samuel judges, so the people  claim this as their excuse to want Samuel to find them a human king. God  reassures Samuel that the people are not turning away from him, they  are turning away from God as their king and forgetting about Him,  worshiping idols again. We will read about God's warning to the people  that if they wanted a human king they would end up serving him and would  eventually regret it and ask God to get rid of the king. God warned  them that when they called on Him to remove the king he would not answer  them. In our discussion today we will talk about the fact that God  gives us free will, including the free will to make our own mistakes and  deal with the consequences of choosing to do what we want rather than  do what God wants us to do.

Introduction and Purpose

00:00:02
Speaker
Hi there, everyone. Today is Monday. It's February 24th, 2025, and you are here with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching. We are here for our daily Bible reading.

Introduction to Day by Day Kids Bible

00:00:13
Speaker
We are reading through the entire Bible in one year, and we're doing that with the Day by Day Kids Bible, and it's been written by Karen Henley. This is a great version of the Bible if you are just joining us today and have just found us.
00:00:26
Speaker
Don't be discouraged. Don't click that off button and switch to the next video. Let me tell you why this version of the Bible is awesome. Just because it is a kid's Bible does not mean that it's not applicable for us grown-ups.
00:00:39
Speaker
Because what this is, is it's just an easier to understand version of the

Chronological Order of Bible Events

00:00:43
Speaker
Bible. But what makes it really unique is that it takes everything in the Bible and puts it in chronological order So we can see what happened when from Genesis through Revelation.
00:00:54
Speaker
So, for instance, when we get to the New Testament and where we have the same event recorded in the different Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, instead of repeating the events that happened, they will be consolidated.
00:01:10
Speaker
All of the different events will be put together and recorded as one story rather than hearing the same event recorded multiple times because they were all eyewitnesses.
00:01:21
Speaker
And ah rather than skipping around and saying, well, wait, I thought this already happened. When did this happen?

Understanding the Bible's Timeline

00:01:27
Speaker
The point of this Bible is for us to understand the timeline that everything happened in.
00:01:32
Speaker
So just as you can buy, ah you know, so they have there are different types of Bibles where they're geared toward different things. Like they might have Bible Promises Bible or a women's Bible where it has ah specific devotions for women or ah men's Bible where it has specific devotions for men.
00:01:48
Speaker
This Bible is written at an easy to understand level and gives us God's whole story from beginning to revelation. And it gives it to us in timeline order so that we can understand the big story of what happens in the Bible.
00:02:04
Speaker
And as always, every day, i will give us the chapters that our story is taken from. And then if you are hungry for more of God's Word, I would encourage you to head up your big Bible and check out those finer details.

Bible Readings' Daily Application

00:02:18
Speaker
So thank you for joining us today. I hope you stick around for the whole reading today. And another thing that we do every day with every reading is that we will have personal application as to how today's reading can be used in your life.
00:02:33
Speaker
God's Word is awesome, and every day we will have application for what we can see going on and how we can use it in our own lives today. And today is no different.
00:02:44
Speaker
We have some great stuff to get into today.

God's People Desire a King

00:02:47
Speaker
Today we are reading about God's people asking for a king.
00:02:55
Speaker
Did you say, I thought they already had a king? You would be right. Right now, who is their king? God is their king. That's right. And we will see the people coveting.
00:03:09
Speaker
What is coveting again? It's when you want with something you want something that somebody else has. And what we are going to see today is that God's people want what the nations the other nations have.
00:03:23
Speaker
They have a king that they can see. And just like they have to keep going back and worshiping idols, if we go back to look at the story when Moses was up on the mountain and they made

Faith vs. Sight

00:03:36
Speaker
the cow as a god, they told Aaron that they wanted a god that they could see.
00:03:43
Speaker
So they were wanting to live by sight. They couldn't see their king. They were relying on God to talk through the judges or the priests and to tell them what he wanted to do and what he wanted them to do.
00:03:58
Speaker
And so they could not see him. And so that is what they are wanting is somebody that they can see. And we are called to live by faith, not by sight.
00:04:10
Speaker
So this is what we will see is the people are wanting to live by sight. So let's head into our new section today. It is entitled, there's a whole section, it's a whole new section. And now it's called Saul, the first king.

Samuel and the Appointment of a King

00:04:26
Speaker
And this will come to us at a first Samuel chapter eight. And it is, ah the section is chapter eight is called, give us a king.
00:04:37
Speaker
Now Samuel got old and he told his sons that they could judge God's people. But Samuel's sons weren't like Samuel. They were not fair.
00:04:50
Speaker
People would pay Samuel's sons. Then his sons would not tell the truth. They would judge that those people were right and his sons would judge other people to be wrong.
00:05:05
Speaker
So the leaders came to Samuel. "'You're old now,' they said. "'Your sons don't judge the way you do. "'So choose a king for us. "'All the other nations have kings.'" And Samuel wasn't happy about this.
00:05:21
Speaker
So he asked God about it. "'They're not turning against you,' God said. "'They're turning against me as their king.'" They're doing what they have always done.
00:05:34
Speaker
They are forgetting me. They're following fake gods. So listen to them, but tell them what will happen. Tell them what a king will do.
00:05:47
Speaker
So Samuel told the people what God had said. Here is what God said. Here's what a king will do. he said He will make your sons work with his horses and chariots.
00:06:02
Speaker
They'll have to run in front of his chariots. Some will have to be captains in the army, and some will have to work in his fields. Some will have to make spears to fight, and your daughters will have to cook and bake for him.
00:06:19
Speaker
They'll have to make perfume for him. A king will take your best fields to be his own. He will take some of your grain and wine.
00:06:32
Speaker
He will take some of your servants. He will take your best cows, sheeps, and donkeys. You'll have to serve him.
00:06:44
Speaker
Then you'll cry to God. You'll want to get rid of your king. God won't answer you. The people would not listen to Samuel.
00:06:55
Speaker
They said, no, we want a king. Then we'll be like the other nations. A king can lead us. He can lead us out to fight. Samuel told the god what told God what the people had said.
00:07:11
Speaker
Then God said, get a king for them. So Samuel said he would. Then he told the people to go home.
00:07:24
Speaker
How does that make you feel?

Consequences of Choosing a Human King

00:07:27
Speaker
Makes me sad.
00:07:31
Speaker
When the first thing that God did was he reassured Samuel when Samuel came to God and said that the people wanted a king. God reassured him and said, they're not turning against you, Samuel.
00:07:45
Speaker
They're turning against me as their king.
00:07:51
Speaker
God was their king. And they didn't have to work in his fields for him to support him. Instead, God was providing for them.
00:08:02
Speaker
So they would have less freedom. They were going to have to work harder now. If that was what they wanted, they would get it. They had free will, and God was going to let them make their own mistakes.
00:08:18
Speaker
There is freedom in Jesus. That is our New Testament parallel. We have more freedom when we choose to live God's way than we do when we choose to live our own way.

Obedience to God vs. Human Desires

00:08:32
Speaker
When we do things our own way, we make things harder for us. When we do things God's way, he makes it easier for us. He takes care of us.
00:08:43
Speaker
He says, seek first the kingdom of God and everything else will be given to you. But here, they don't want to serve God. They're gonna have to serve a king. And they said, that's fine, no, no, we want a king. Give us someone we can see.
00:08:58
Speaker
They wanted somebody who would lead them into battle. Who was leading them into battle already? That's right, God was. The Ark box would go out in front.
00:09:09
Speaker
Who was in front? God was in front. Now God would tell them, that they would be in front of of the king's chariots.
00:09:20
Speaker
They would go in front.
00:09:23
Speaker
So there is not freedom in getting what we want. One of the things that I've heard people say before is, well, if God didn't want me to have this, I wouldn't have it.
00:09:37
Speaker
But you know what? We are not seeing that to be true as we read this year, are we? Let's remember when Balaam, The man who was paid by the king, he was going to be paid by the king to pray bad things for God's people.
00:09:56
Speaker
He asked God about it and God told him, no, you may not pray bad things. He said, don't go with the king's men. The king sent more men. And so Balaam asked him again.
00:10:09
Speaker
And God said, all right, you can go. But I told you, you can't pray anything bad. Why even bother to go? So what happened was that then God's angel, Jesus, stood in front of the way and the donkey was trying to turn around.
00:10:24
Speaker
And Balaam was very mean to his donkey. And the in Jesus told him when he finally showed himself, he said, you you know, you weren't supposed to go.
00:10:36
Speaker
and he says, well, if you want me to turn back, then I'll turn back. And he said, no, you can go, but you're not going to be able to pray anything bad. You can only say what I tell you to say. And so God lets us do things our way, but he when we end up not ah having things turn out the way we would like for them to.
00:10:59
Speaker
So he was probably hoping that he could get paid still, right? And he didn't. He didn't pray any bad things. Now let's look ahead to Barak, who was told by Deborah that he was supposed to lead the army,
00:11:17
Speaker
and fight against Sisera, the a captain of the enemy enemy's army. And he told Deborah, I won't go unless you go with me.
00:11:29
Speaker
And Deborah told him, all right, I'll go, but that's not the way God wants it. So he went and she said, a woman will win the battle.
00:11:41
Speaker
And sure enough, while he was fighting, Sisera took off running and he chased Sisera down. But who killed Sisera? A woman. And her name was Jael.
00:11:53
Speaker
And so he did not get the glory for that battle. Jael did. And her name is recorded in the Bible as having won. So God has told him, it won't be the way you want it to be.
00:12:06
Speaker
You can have it your way, but it's not going to work the way you think it is. When we do things God's way, things work out better.

Free Will and Consequences

00:12:15
Speaker
Gideon followed what God told him to do.
00:12:19
Speaker
And so he gets credit for winning the battle with God. God used him. And so we see here that God gives us free will.
00:12:31
Speaker
And he says, you can do it your way. But now look, you're going to end up paying for it. There's always a consequence when we do things our own way. So ah when when you are looking for something and we ask God about it and he says no and then we do it anyways, it's not right to say, well, God must have wanted me to have this or to do this or he wouldn't have let me do it.
00:12:59
Speaker
Because we see that in the Bible that is not so. God does not stand there and say, you're not permitted to do this. Because that would be taking away our free will.
00:13:10
Speaker
He lets us make our own mistakes. So it's kind of like when our mom and dad tell us, no, you really shouldn't do this when you ask for permission to do something.
00:13:23
Speaker
And mom and dad say, no, it's not a good idea for you to do this because if you do, this will happen. And then you say, well, I'm going to do it anyways. That's fine. That's fine.
00:13:34
Speaker
And then what happens? It happens the way they said it would. And then you're unhappy with what happened. Can you think of anything where mom or dad has told you it's not a good idea for you to do this, but you can make your own choice and then you've regretted not doing it the way that you were told not to do it?

God's Guidance and Parental Advice

00:13:52
Speaker
I know I can think of my own examples.
00:13:56
Speaker
And so God is our heavenly father. And when we grow up, we have that same thing. When we ask God and he tells us no, and then we come back and we say, but I want this.
00:14:08
Speaker
He may say, go ahead, do it your way, but there will be consequences. And so when we go out and we do things anyway, even though it looks very much like God has closed the door on something and we work and work to try to get what we want anyways,
00:14:22
Speaker
then God will let us have our own consequences. And that doesn't mean that God will not still work. So that's our big takeaway today.
00:14:32
Speaker
And i wanted to point out, I wanted to circle back around to when God told Samuel, They are not turning against you. They are turning against me as their king.
00:14:45
Speaker
Our New Testament parallel to that is when Jesus said, the world will hate you because it hated me first. So at first we see that God is saying, don't take it personally because he was the one.
00:15:02
Speaker
that they were actually hating. And Jesus is telling us now that when they hate us, it is because they hate him. And so they are seeing him through us.
00:15:15
Speaker
And now God lives in us when we have the Holy Spirit. And so they are, when people see and they don't like what we are doing and they are hating us, Jesus told us, be aware They're not going to not hate you. They're going to hate you because they hated me first.
00:15:34
Speaker
And it all comes back to that what people are hating is God. They are seeing God in you. And that is what people are turning against. It is not us that people are turning against. It is God that people are turning against.
00:15:51
Speaker
And so I wanted us to remember that too.
00:15:56
Speaker
All right, well, I think that is everything I have today.

Key Lesson: Seeking God's Will

00:16:08
Speaker
So just to recap, our daily application is to honor God when he tells us no about something and not to think that just because we got it anyways, by ways of what we were trying to do to get it,
00:16:25
Speaker
ah that not to say, oh well, um' this must be God's will or I wouldn't have gotten what I got. and Because that's not necessarily the case. if If we are determined to do things our way, God will let us have our way because we have free will.
00:16:41
Speaker
So it is always best to seek God's will because whatever it is that we want to do, it will turn out better if we do things God's way. It might not be the way we want to do it, but remember, God's ways are higher than our ways.
00:16:57
Speaker
And so whatever it is that we're doing, ah we need to look to do it God's way instead of our own way. Because it may seem right to us, but God knows best. Sounds like a TV show. There used to be a really old TV show called Father Knows Best.
00:17:11
Speaker
And we could make a little TV show called God Knows Best. and And then, you know, think about all the different episodes we could do with that. Wouldn't that be funny? um It was usually those are those are sitcoms. Those are meant to be funny things.
00:17:26
Speaker
But um we we could have a little thing. God knows best. And he really does. And he only has our best in mind when the people ah had him as their king.
00:17:40
Speaker
They didn't have to pay ah to support him. They didn't have to run in front of his chariots.

Reliance on Divine Guidance

00:17:48
Speaker
they he They didn't have to make perfume for him.
00:17:52
Speaker
we bring things to God as offering and we give to God as offering. But now they would have to support a king because now a king would be expected to take care of them.
00:18:03
Speaker
And so they're looking for a king to take care of them instead of God to take care of them. And we can do that today, too, where we can look to our government to take care of us.
00:18:15
Speaker
And we should not be looking to our government to take care of us. We should be looking to God to take care of us. Because it's not... ah anybody's responsibility but God to take care of us.
00:18:28
Speaker
We are meant to put our faith in God, not in our leaders. And that is what God is telling them is that you're you're going to regret that and you're going to want them out of office.
00:18:40
Speaker
And I'm not going to do that because once he they've set up a system, that's the system we have now, isn't it? We have presidents, we have kings. there is There was no other nation in the world who had God as their king.
00:18:54
Speaker
Everybody else had regular kings. And this will be the time that we see all of that change. And we do have a time coming where when Jesus comes back, he's supposed to reign for a thousand years.
00:19:05
Speaker
So I'm curious what that will look like. And we're supposed to have a thousand years peace when that happens. So I don't think we will probably see that. We might be a little far off, but who knows? so Nobody knows the time or day that that will happen.
00:19:22
Speaker
So thank you for being with me here today.

Spreading God's Word and Engagement

00:19:25
Speaker
and hope that wasn't a little too long winded for you. I hope everybody has a great rest of their day. And if you feel that God has lit your light, then please click that light button. It looks like a like button.
00:19:37
Speaker
But it's really a light button. And together we can light up YouTube. We can light up TikTok. We can light up our favorite podcasting app. And we can help get this event a little more attention so we can put our light towards God.
00:19:51
Speaker
Because he is are the light of the world. Jesus is the light of the world. And he shines through us. And ah let's spread the word about reading God's word. So thank you so much for joining me today.
00:20:02
Speaker
I'll see everybody tomorrow.
