I'm doing awesome, Al. It's a an exciting day for me personally. it is my 18th wedding anniversary. Woohoo! Yeah. Very exciting.
00:00:27
Speaker
Yeah. Your marriage is an adult. They're grown up. There you go. Full grown adult. yes i love it i love it well a good day congratulations to you and mr woolison that's fantastic thanks awesome stuff how are you doing now oh yeah good i'm uh slowly walking through my my summer list the garage is now cleaned and i cleaned my car out a little bit got that reorganized um I'm working on another podcast, so I was doing a lot of that work this morning.
00:01:02
Speaker
um Just bits and pieces. I've got a long list of of lots of things, but nothing too major. So, slowly getting through them and slightly putting off writing my dissertation, which I just need to do. It's just the getting started.

Summer Tasks and Procrastination

00:01:18
Speaker
So, that will happen this week, I suppose. Yeah. Well done. That's very exciting stuff. yeah lots and Lots of good things.

Bamboozled Trivia Game

00:01:29
Speaker
But before dissertation, we need to have a round of bamboozled discussing the one with the baby on the bus. We have our priorities in order. um ah This, I feel, is a particularly was a good episode for bamboozled.
00:01:46
Speaker
I felt there were some good questions to be had. Yes. So I am intrigued see what you think. I agree with that. I agree with that very much. Now, I do only have nine questions, but I think there's probably only one, possibly two that we're going to, maybe three, that we're going to overlap on. but Okay, I have 11.
00:02:16
Speaker
Okay, all right. All right. would Well, I went first last time, so I do feel you should go first this time. Okay. All right. Go for it. Number one.
00:02:27
Speaker
What brand shirt is Chandler wearing? See, I was going to look this up. And it was the whole episode. It was the whole thing.
00:02:38
Speaker
It says and one. Yeah, that's the brand. didn't know if that was the brand name. Yes. And then that little guy and like with the muscles that you see on the back of his shirt. Yes. That's like the logo.
00:02:52
Speaker
Okay. Yeah. There you go. Nice job. i have a funny I have a funny anecdote about that shirt, but I will tell you off air. Oh, okay. So just remind me when we finish recording.
00:03:07
Speaker
um All right. All right. I feel like we're starting off fairly comfortably. What three things do we find that Ross is allergic to? Oh, can you hear me? i can. Okay.
00:03:18
Speaker
It just glitched for a split second on this end. Okay. All right. I think we're back. We're good to go. What three things do we find that Ross is allergic to? Okay. This is a repeat. Lobster, peanuts, and kiwi. There we go.
00:03:33
Speaker
Yeah. Which I want to discuss how ah frustrated I was with that entire situation. All right. Anyway. All all right.
00:03:45
Speaker
How much money does Phoebe make whenever she's sitting outside singing at Central Park? Ah, that's one of my, she makes $8.27, but she puts in two of those dollars.
00:03:58
Speaker
Very good. So 6.27 net profit. Very good. All right. this one This this might be a good question.
00:04:11
Speaker
but We're both of a similar age. Kate knew this immediately, and I thought it was going to be difficult. In Phoebe's song, she says that turgan, spelt backwards, is nurget.
00:04:22
Speaker
What in the world is turgan? Oh, it's shampoo. It is shampoo. I thought this was going to be something crazy. And Kate's like, ah, it's dandruff shampoo. Yeah. Yeah. that' So it's it's a brand name for kind of anything with coal tar in it.
00:04:38
Speaker
You can get turgan body wash and other things, but it's main thing. The main thing is turgan shampoo. I had never heard of that before. Kate knew it immediately.
00:04:48
Speaker
Yeah. Uh-huh. Yes. All right. All right. This one is a little nitpicky, but if you were looking for it, you saw it. Okay.

Nostalgic 90s Discussion

00:04:58
Speaker
and So whenever Chandler and Joey are standing outside of a record store that has a purple door, and there is a poster in the window for a new album that had just come out.
00:05:15
Speaker
Any idea but it is? I don't, but a great question. I'm going to go with...
00:05:24
Speaker
yeah I don't even remember when this came out. Joshua Tree by U2. Ooh, that's a good guess. Atlantis Morissette, Jagged Little Pill. That, yeah, it just turned like 30, like a few days ago, that album. One one of the most iconic albums of the 90s.
00:05:40
Speaker
That's a lot of fun. Right. Yes, and I thought that was so cool. And then, you know, last time we talked about Reverend Horton Heaton, his place yes in there.
00:05:51
Speaker
She is not so niche as he is, but, you know, still a fun music situation. Yeah, and Lance Marston, just phenomenal.
00:06:03
Speaker
We're going to, well, no, I'm going to. Am I going to ruin this? No, i'm not going to ruin it. We're going to talk about this in the review as well. When Joey and Chandler are outside with Ben, what 90s show did the woman who first approached them start in?
00:06:18
Speaker
Oh, oh, whoa, that's scary. Okay, because it's Leah Thompson and she was in Back to the Future and all that. What?
00:06:30
Speaker
Yes, that's where I know her from, but she is in a very... She stars. She stars in a very well-known sitcom in the It's yeah
00:06:42
Speaker
i it's not mad about you. It's not, but it's it it's in that in that universe. you know very very You know, that kind of Thursday night, 30-minute...
00:06:55
Speaker
Now, I will tell I've never seen this show, but I've always wanted to. Always wanted to watch it, and it's not available in its entirety to stream anywhere I have looked. I have no clue.
00:07:09
Speaker
The answer is Caroline and the City. oh She starred that. And there's a lot, I say a lot, quite a few crossovers in that show, just like there was in Mad About You.
00:07:23
Speaker
And we'll talk about it. This was another crossover night for NBC. So she was in Friends and there was other people in other things on the same night, which we'll get to. Wow, that's funny.
00:07:35
Speaker
Yeah, I know. Thinking about like the blackout night and then the um the other one where they crossed over from mad about you because of Phoebe and yeah, when they come and our salon, they come. Yes.
00:07:49
Speaker
Yeah. So this is one of the couple. Yeah. We'll talk about it. I'm excited to hear about that. Okay.

Musical Moments at Central Perk

00:07:56
Speaker
All right. Um, what song does Stephanie sing in central park?
00:08:04
Speaker
So that's a great question. Cause I could probably sing certainly the whole chorus. It, but i don't know if it is actually just called angel in the morning. Yep. a Okay. Of the morning.
00:08:15
Speaker
and Of the morning. It's one of those ones that everyone knows, but wasn't 100% sure what it was called. um All right. Yeah, it's such a great song. That was stuck in my head for hours after listening to Okay. So I have a question about that.
00:08:31
Speaker
On your episode, does she sing the full song?
00:08:36
Speaker
She does not. She sings. It's definitely not the full song. She sings a little more. then I would have thought she would. Like, you know, they can tell that this is a star. So they give her just, to me, an extra five or ten seconds than they would if it was anyone else.
00:08:52
Speaker
Okay, she sings for full-on minutes in the DVD version. i am We are watching that today. That has to be. Yeah, because it's so good.
00:09:06
Speaker
And then I didn't know who she was. So I had to, and then I was like, oh, okay. a Duh. yeah But you know I'm like watching, I'm like, oh, she's, I've got goosebumps. She's so good. So good. like And she's still singing. Like, this must be somebody.
00:09:26
Speaker
I love, yeah, she is yeah just phenomenal. um the When Phoebe, Phoebe's in Central Park for lots of this. She has one coffee cup. What color is that coffee cup?
00:09:38
Speaker
Oh my God. I know. I'm only doing this because i asked about the coffee cup last time. I won't make this a habit. Oh, yeah. No, now you have to because now I'll start paying attention and remembering.
00:09:51
Speaker
Is it yellow? It's not yellow. Is it blue? It is not blue. Dang, I don't know. Then it's green. It's green this time. Oh, yellow and blue. Obviously, I knew that. There we There we You were just breaking it down.
00:10:07
Speaker
Yeah, right, right. All right. So why did Chandler and Joey forget about the baby on the bus? Because they were too enamored with these two ladies who were on the bus. um I'm trying to think there's any more to the answer.
00:10:23
Speaker
That's it. yeah All right. no Yes. Ready to go get a drink with the ladies. um When Phoebe's playing outside Central Park, what color is her jacket?
00:10:37
Speaker
Oh, she wore this jacket in the last episode and she had purple shiny boots that matches the jacket. I love that jacket.
00:10:48
Speaker
It's a great jacket. It's a great jacket. It is. And so whenever I watched it the second time, I really paid attention to her shoes. Because I was like, where are those purple shoes that went so well with that jacket that she was wearing?
00:11:03
Speaker
Like the purple shoes in the last episode, she was wearing like a t-shirt and blue jeans and then these purple boots. It was so cute that matched. But like, it was a very dressed down outfit for the jacket and the boots.
00:11:18
Speaker
And then in this one, she's wearing, you know, the skirt and the tall boots, black boots and the purple jacket. So yeah, anyway. No, it's it's a great, it's it's it's quite a distinguishable jacket. Like, you know, it's Phoebe's. It's awesome. And it's so cute.
00:11:35
Speaker
yeah All right. ah So Chandler and Joey realize they have left the baby. They're running down the street. Chandler's got his little play gym thing around his neck. They're running, running, running.
00:11:48
Speaker
And then they round the corner. How many buses are there? There are three buses. Nice. And I know that ah because we went back and rewatched that scene a couple of times trying to watch the bus they were on.
00:12:01
Speaker
Which one was it? Yeah, we yeah were trying to figure out, can you tell? and We couldn't. No, you can't. Because the only distinguishing thing between those three is the amount of graffiti.
00:12:14
Speaker
Yes. don't ever see the full back to be able to determine how much graffiti it actually has. Correct. Yeah, I did too. I love that you looked for that.
00:12:25
Speaker
Well, I'm going to skip forward to a question because I want to talk to you about the bus as well. Okay. And this this is up there with your movie poster one. You either saw it or you didn't. um where is that Where is the bus going that Chandler and Joey get on?
00:12:42
Speaker
No. yeah won' it's once You you can't really guess it. um It's going to Fort Washington, which I looked up and is quite a small real park um in the city.
00:12:54
Speaker
But yeah, it says Fort Washington on the front. Huh, there you go. That's funny. Okay, what room number is health services where they talk to the guy whenever they they go to get in?
00:13:09
Speaker
You have completely stumped me with a numbers question. I didn't even notice there was a number. So I am going to guess 17. 214.
00:13:21
Speaker
214. Couldn't have been further away, really. All right. 214. All right. What coffee shop do the two women, Joanne Chandler, meet suggest going to?
00:13:38
Speaker
Was it a coffee shop? I thought it a bar. I thought it was. I have no idea. They know us there. They love us there. That's right. that's that's It's that scene. Maybe it's a bar. I thought it was a coffee shop. Could be a bar. But the name of the place is, I think, a tribute um to Marcel because the coffee shop is Markel's.
00:14:03
Speaker
ah They've just switched the C and the K. Oh. I choose to believe in my little friend's heart. could It could also be an homage to, um oh, God. What's his name?
00:14:16
Speaker
Paulo for Raquel. Oh, Raquel. They kind of blended Marcel and Raquel. I've got Markels. I love it. yeah All right. and

Comedic Baby Mishaps

00:14:28
Speaker
So what is the clue that gives Raquel?
00:14:33
Speaker
lets Ross know that maybe something a little more happened with Ben today. um It says Department of Human Services on the diaper that he's wearing.
00:14:47
Speaker
Yes. Yes. Nice. um What two chords does Phoebe ask Stephanie if she knows? D and A minor.
00:15:00
Speaker
And can you go from to A minor? I do love that bit. yeah Yes. Yes. I do. Your guitar have a strap. Okay. What room is Ben in
00:15:14
Speaker
at Department of Health Services? Oh, is this a number or a name? Number. Oh, you know what? I'm going to stick with it. Well, no, because if it was 214, 218. 201.
00:15:25
Speaker
two eighteen two oh one Two, while I went the other, should have gone the other direction. I was going up from 214. Well, and you would think so, like that you would go there first and then you would go, to but whatever, whatever.
00:15:44
Speaker
i Let's go with, what's the name of the doctor that Ross sees? yeah. He introduces himself when he walks in the room. Yeah, he does. And he's got a list. He does?
00:16:01
Speaker
I had to put on the closed captioning and I was slightly wrong about his name. Oh, dang. yes I don't know. I have no clue. I thought he said Dr. Carl, just C-A-R-L, but according to the closed captioning, it's Carlin, K-A-R-L-E-N.
00:16:20
Speaker
Oh, okay. Okay. Well, he is only credited as the doctor. Indeed, he is, which I find interesting. All right. Do you have any more for me?
00:16:32
Speaker
do not. Right. I don't think so, because I have one left for you. all right. what What is the name of Stephanie's first love? She writes a song for her first love, plays one chord and says one word, and then Phoebe starts drowning her out.
00:16:49
Speaker
Is it Tyler? It is not Tyler. My, I have no clue. Right. It is. She says Zachary. and the door flies open.
00:17:00
Speaker
And and yeah maybe she's so angry. Yes. Angry Phoebe. All right. That was, the I love that. ah The, the, the musical poster, the jagged little pill one.
00:17:12
Speaker
Yeah. Good. Good questions. Yeah, that was a good little round, I think. I liked it. Well, let's say we start in the girls' apartment. Monica is trying to calm Ben down.
00:17:25
Speaker
He starts to be fussy. Ross manages to calm him down. but every time he goes near Monica, there there there is wailing and crying and tears. um Chandler plays that very funny game.
00:17:39
Speaker
Taking her close. Yes.
00:17:44
Speaker
Let's see. Sorry. So I suddenly lost my place in my notes. She's worried that her own kid won't like her. And Chandler is like, you don't have to worry about that. you like You don't even have a boyfriend.
00:17:55
Speaker
Like a little heartless, a little on the nose. but Yeah. yeah Yeah. But I think he's just trying to make her feel better and saying whatever, you know.
00:18:08
Speaker
Right. Okay, but the line that made me laugh so harsh. is whenever Monica's holding them and then Ross is like, it's nothing that Mr. Keys can't fix or Happy Keys.
00:18:23
Speaker
And Joey goes, yeah, i know. jangle or Jangling pieces of jagged metal always cheers me up or something like that. i don't have that. Oh, gosh. I feel they're cutting out all the best stuff.
00:18:39
Speaker
Well, that one was so funny to me. But it was a very Chandler-esque line. But Joey was the one who said it, which made it ah hilarious to me. So, well, dang. I'm definitely re-watching this one because want to see um you know Angel in the Morning and it's in its full form.
00:18:57
Speaker
Yeah. So we got to watch that. um We have the opening credits. We come back and Chandler and Joey are still making fun of Monica and Ben crying. i Lost starts to happen. She knocks that basketball out the window. Right, like she just, out she goes. like And you kind of, you know, the scene out of that window changes occasionally, I think, in the beginning.
00:19:22
Speaker
Like, where does that lead? I mean, does that just drop four or five floors down, whatever it is, just to the street? Yeah. And just what about the people? Like, yeah. Should we have heard like squealing brakes or something? Right.
00:19:37
Speaker
Like, I don't know. But that really that's so funny to me. Yeah. Which is just like she didn't give a second thought, just out the window it goes. Yeah. And then that window is the same one that the bird flew into couple episodes ago. And yeah.
00:19:52
Speaker
and Yes. That window is getting some airtime the last couple of episodes. Yeah. I should have asked what color the basketball was because I don't remember if it was just like a normal orangey brown color. Was it?
00:20:04
Speaker
It was just normal. Just a normal basketball. All right. um Yeah, Ross starts to have an allergic reaction, um evidently to the kiwi, because it's a kiwi lime pie instead of a key lime pie.

Allergy Anecdotes and Games

00:20:17
Speaker
That's what makes it special. ah Yeah. and Okay, question. Do you like key lime pie? I do like key lime pie, yes.
00:20:27
Speaker
Yeah. oh I am not a fan, not a fan. But my wonder is if I would be more interested in kiwi lime pie because i very much like kiwi.
00:20:38
Speaker
Yeah, I don't really know what ki is. like I mean, ki lime but just a type of lime? I don't know. and That's what I think. thats I mean, that makes sense. I don't know. Yeah.
00:20:49
Speaker
Are you allergic to anything? Man, did we talk about allergies last week? I think maybe as well, didn't we? We have talked about it because I talked about pumpkin.
00:21:00
Speaker
That was it. So I might be allergic to something, which sounds weird. So the only time I've ever had an allergic reaction, this is a core memory of my childhood, was I got sent home from school one day because I broke out in this rash all over my arms and my hands because I'd used some kind of like poster paint, like some kind of paint at school, and that caused it to break out.
00:21:25
Speaker
But I've never had that reaction again. Huh. ah So I don't know if it was that, i don't know if it wasn't, a you know no idea. But other than that, I'm not allergic to anything that I know of.
00:21:37
Speaker
Well, so here's something interesting because people who are typically allergic to kiwi are also allergic to latex. Interesting. There's some similar, I didn't know that. Yeah.
00:21:52
Speaker
Yeah. I don't know why. i don't know why. But the, a Kiwi allergy is, is common, uh, along with like some kind of pollen and then latex.
00:22:05
Speaker
Right. My mom is allergic to latex and pineapples. And so I wonder if she's not allergic to kiwi too. and it would kind It would kind of track that she would be, ah think, at that point.
00:22:17
Speaker
Interesting. Well, Ross, his tongue starts to swell up. It's either that or my mouth's getting smaller, which one of those silly lines, but I find really funny. Yes.
00:22:28
Speaker
and But no, he doesn't want to go get a shot. And he said, yeah you know, why do we have a game of Scrabble?
00:22:34
Speaker
It's all better. Scrabble comes up. Like, I think I know it comes up with Marcel and it's up here and I know travel Scrabble comes up. Yeah. that How do you feel about Scrabble?
00:22:45
Speaker
Like on a scale of zero, you hate it. Ten, it's your favorite game. Where would Scrabble fall? Probably like a four. A four. Yeah. Like if there is, I will play it, but if there is literally almost anything else, ah I will play something else.

Babysitting Ben and Friends Strategy

00:23:02
Speaker
Right. That's fair. Yeah. Now I do like, I think we've talked about Words with Friends before though. Yes. i do enjoy Words with Friends, but real life Scrabble is not my jam.
00:23:13
Speaker
Right. You're Words with Friends. We haven't played that in years, but that's a fun game. yeah um But what are we going to do with Ben if Monica and Ross have to go to the hospital? Well, this is where Uncle Joey and Uncle Chandler step in.
00:23:25
Speaker
And Ross reluctantly agrees. um I did rewatch this scene to see if there would be closed captioning for what Ross was trying to say. There was nothing. Like, it's just nonsense.
00:23:37
Speaker
yeah But, yeah, Uncle Joey, Uncle Chandler, they've got this handled. They're going to be fine. Okay, so this is annoying to me. Right. and She's like, he just needs a shot.
00:23:51
Speaker
So the shot would be an epinephrine. That would be your epi shot. But if you have to go to the hospital to get the shot, think like, and they have enough time to like talk through this and everything else.
00:24:10
Speaker
Like in the 90s, did we not have an EpiPen that you could just do right then? Kate brought up the exact same point. we were was that Ross would have one. um and And if he doesn't, then it's not a life-threatening is situation.
00:24:24
Speaker
Take some Benadryl and then go. like yeah and like it just seems very dramatic. Dramatic. and dramatic yeah You would think monnet both Monica and Ross would have an EpiPen. Like if Ross would have one and Monica seems like the kind of person knowing that her brother has these allergies would probably have one too. Like just cause he's there all the time. Like cause she's that meticulous about things. It's very odd that there's no not an EpiPen to be found.
00:24:56
Speaker
Right. In this situation. And that it she would have not thought about the fact that he was allergic to kiwi. right i Yeah, I don't know.
00:25:08
Speaker
It's an odd one. it is an odd setup, I think, this one. Yeah. um we We bounce on over to Central Park and Phoebe's playing her new song for Rachel. And then Rachel's boss, is it Terry? I think his name is right. It is Terry, yes. I was ready. I just knew you were going ask me that, but then you asked me the doctor.
00:25:28
Speaker
I did. I was prepared for Terry. You're ready for Terry. I do quite like Terry. He's a good character.
00:25:40
Speaker
a He's so grumpy. He is a bit grumpy. like He's just done with life in a lot of ways, I think. He tells Rachel he's hired a new musician that's meant to be very good and he wants to like stick his finger in his eye and swirl his brain around when Phoebe plays.
00:25:57
Speaker
I wrote that down so bad. It makes me want to put my finger in my eye all the way to my brain and swirl it around. And the way that he delivers that line is hysterical.
00:26:09
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Like he's been tolerating Phoebe for years and he's finally snapped in a low key way. but He just can't handle it anymore. um but he's he's He's charged Rachel with delivering the bad news to Phoebe.
00:26:24
Speaker
um which is a shame. But this is where we bounce over to the street scene where Joey and Chandler are with Ben and discussing how Ben may get them the attention of women.

NBC Crossover and Musical Tension

00:26:34
Speaker
And this is where Leah Thompson, Caroline and the City, Back to the Future comes up, assuming that they're a couple and asks about um the brother. But let I'll kind of quickly run through it.
00:26:44
Speaker
So on this one night when this premiered, Leah Thompson, obviously in Friends, starring in Caroline and the City, The same night, David Schwimmer appeared as Ross in a show called The Single Guy. I don't know what that show is.
00:26:59
Speaker
But he appears as Ross there. And then Matthew Perry makes an appearance as Chandler on Caroline and the City. All within the space of an hour and a half of each other on this Thursday Oh, how fun.
00:27:12
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. and And I was speaking to Steve. You know, this is Steve's wheelhouse. And him and sent messages back and forth this morning. And he was like, Caroline the the City he had so many crossovers.
00:27:24
Speaker
He had several characters from Frasier make appearances too. um Like, it was a big thing in the 90s for comedy to do this, to get people to watch um you watch all these other shows and it it worked you know it it was really really good yes um but yeah leo tom but like you i immediately went man that's back to the future which i adore i adore those films oh yes no oh now oh no let's let's pause there put them in order so we go back to the future one two and three okay what's your favorite to worst of the three
00:28:01
Speaker
one three two and exactly the same. One is the classic. It's phenomenal. I do like the Western one. like I do quite like a lot of that. Two to me was a struggle. I believe two and three were meant to be one huge movie together. then Yes.
00:28:18
Speaker
Is that right? But then they started it to split it up. Yes. Did split it up. And I'm so glad they did. Yes. And I always get so excited because you'd be seeing all the fan trailers and ah and trailers Like they build them with AI using clips from um all of the characters and stuff that they're doing now.
00:28:41
Speaker
Yeah. To say Back to the Future 4. And I'm like, I wish. but It would be amazing. It's just an excellent franchise. It really is. mike Michael J. Fox's biography autobiography he wrote, it came a couple of years ago. It's phenomenal.
00:28:55
Speaker
Really worth the read. Yeah, really, really good. And he goes into being sick. You know, it's obviously been sick for quite a while, unfortunately. um But you know he kind of goes into that in his life, dealing with ah Parkinson's. so So really, really interesting. but Definitely recommend that to all of our listeners.
00:29:15
Speaker
I'm putting it on my book list right now. Excellent. He he does the, I think it's, I'm sure it's through the Denton Library. don't know you have access to that. um The audio book, and he he reads it.
00:29:28
Speaker
um Oh, see, I love that. yeah i am I loved Matthew Perry's and yes ah Matthew McConaughey's. Oh, Greenlights?
00:29:40
Speaker
Yes. So good. Such a good book. And it just I love it when the when the author reads it. To me, it gives us an authenticity. And Matthew McConaughey.
00:29:50
Speaker
I mean, it's like like ah just a perfect voice to read his own story. Oh, yes. So, so good. And then Matthew Perry's also. Yes. And it gave me chills.
00:30:02
Speaker
Yes. Whenever first read it or whenever I first listened to it because I didn't realize that he was the one reading it. Right. So as soon as it starts, it's like, oh my gosh, goosebumps and you just want to hug them.
00:30:15
Speaker
Yeah. you just Yeah. throw Throw your arm around him. It's an incredible, tragic, but incredible story. Yeah, definitely, definitely want to listen or a read.
00:30:26
Speaker
um Back in Central Park, unfortunately, Rachel has to break the news to Phoebe that she's not going to be playing anymore. But she kind of gets a gets a bit of a back pull. That's unfair to Rachel.
00:30:39
Speaker
But she decides to stand up for Phoebe. You know, back to Terry. Can't say, look, you know, can't she just play afterwards? I have a question about that. Yes. Knowing that in the last episode, we just talked about the money and all of that.
00:30:54
Speaker
And then Phoebe is raw about this whole money situation, right? Right, right. And she's like, why not you know put her in a throne with a crown and a stick with a ball on top?
00:31:09
Speaker
You know, but yeah, I don't know. i didn't necessarily like that a whole lot. I could see that, yeah. no I had not thought about what we reviewed last episode, and you're right.
00:31:22
Speaker
um Some sort of contradictory opinions about money for Phoebe, I guess. Something like that. Or just very raw. like Yeah. or I don't know.
00:31:35
Speaker
But then it's like, well, you could just get a real job. Right, there is that. Yeah. Yeah, don't get too crazy, but you could just get a ah nine to five somewhere.
00:31:47
Speaker
Oh, my gosh. And then whenever Rachel goes back to Terry is like, and I could clean the cappuccino machine. I don't ever want to get a cappuccino machine or a cappuccino out somewhere. Gross.
00:32:01
Speaker
I do imagine that they are a bit like, um you like every school has either has one or had one, like the popcorn machine on wheels. And they never go like they never get cleaned right because they're a nightmare to clean.
00:32:15
Speaker
Yeah. You know, things like that. I just, a cappuccino machine, maybe this is completely unfair and and just not true. But I imagine they're really difficult to clean. Yeah. And, you know, maybe not the cleanest of things if you get a drink. But who knows? That might be and unfair to our friends in the cappuccino industry. I don't know.
00:32:36
Speaker
ah Yeah. I don't know either. But what I do know is like the little instant cappuccino machines, like at 7-Eleven. Yes. I had a little stint in my adult life.
00:32:47
Speaker
It just made me quit the job because he was like, this is so dangerous. But I worked at 7-Eleven some nights and, um, but the, that cappuccino machine, it was real easy to like switch the stuff out.
00:33:03
Speaker
Right. It was nasty. Like it got nasty and gross. And so I imagine like, and that was just one of those instant ones. I would imagine ah real one. There's a lot more to it and that would get cleaned the way that it should.
00:33:18
Speaker
Yeah, I just feel there's lots of pipes and nozzles and bits and pieces. And it's a complex piece of machinery in my head. and But she's going to clean it.
00:33:30
Speaker
ah and And so there's a little misunderstanding. She's allowed to play after Stephanie. Phoebe assumes she's getting paid. But she's not. And she is not going to lower herself to being the free second act after a paid professional. The sloppy second charity being. Sloppy seconds. We're not going to have that. It ends up ah busking outside for money, i just playing on the street.
00:33:55
Speaker
um We head on over to the hospital where we meet Dr.

Hospital Humor and Sibling Banter

00:34:00
Speaker
Carlin. I think his name is. Ross needs a shot. um Has to be a needle. Ross being ridiculous. Yeah. And Ross had squirt gun idea in the mouth. Like Ross is a doctor.
00:34:12
Speaker
Obviously not a medical doctor, but he's an intelligent guy. um He knows that that's not that even a remote possibility. Yes, that's something about my third ethos idea.
00:34:29
Speaker
ah Yes. Squirt gun. The squirt gun idea. He squeezes Monica's hand far too tightly. um and And it's quite a quick scene. We go right back over to Joey and Chandler getting off the bus.
00:34:44
Speaker
are They're about to get um in a cab. Yeah. But then they see these two ladies get on the bus. And I do, again, ah throwaway line, but Chandler tapping the top of the cab and says, does he say? Like, just practicing. Good job.
00:34:58
Speaker
Yeah. It's the delivery. Yes. It's so good. And they hop on the the bus with these, um these two ladies. um And yeah, I can't remember what Joey says, but it's Chandler sort of calling him out for being a bit ridiculous. Yeah.
00:35:16
Speaker
Oh, well, okay. So my one is like where they're like, oh, he's so adorable. And she goes, yeah, could you tell him that? He thinks he's too pink.
00:35:27
Speaker
That's right. You know, like, it's just so silly. It's so silly. Yeah. Enjoy overcompensating to ensure they know that they're not gay. That's it. Yes, they're heterosexual.
00:35:39
Speaker
We're not out. We're not out. We're just two heterosexual guys doing. We can have to have other heterosexual friends kid. Like it's just, just ridiculous.
00:35:52
Speaker
um But they end up getting off the bus to have drinks, a coffee, whatever it may be at Markel's. um They know them there. um Now, when I was re-watching this scene, trying to see if it was the same bus, I did notice the street sign.
00:36:08
Speaker
They run along a street called called Holstead Street, which does not exist in New York. Now, obviously, this is shot in Los Angeles, of course, but I thought they might have put an actual...
00:36:20
Speaker
real street sign of a street that exists in New York City. But they don't. It's just, it's a random made up street. Maybe um I wrote it down because I thought, i wonder if that street name is in another show, you know, like they're using the same. Or if it's somebody's last name. somebody's last name there's some connection there i couldn't see i googled it couldn't see anything obvious so just left it but um holstead street is there for a reason but they they chased the bus because they've accidentally left baby ben um on the bus they round the corner and there is no telling which bus he is on um let's see so we um
00:37:02
Speaker
We end that scene there. We go back to the hospital. Monica's hand is sore, but not broken. Ross is feeling better. Monica's kind of irritated with him. um Yeah, because she's got a bone bruise and then a puncture wound where he squeezed her until her ring punctured her finger.
00:37:22
Speaker
Yeah. so I thought that was a funny little storyline. Like, unless I've missed something, like, kind of what's the point in Monica hurting her hand?
00:37:32
Speaker
It doesn't really play out to anything. And usually these things kind of lead to something. Well, it leads later to the conversation about all the terrible things. that's right. Yeah, it does. You're absolutely right.
00:37:46
Speaker
Yeah. But don't worry, because Ross now has his S's back. That's right. So there's no need to panic. That's right. He's feeling better. Yeah, Ross definitely is completely panicked to this point or anything. Right.
00:38:01
Speaker
um We go back to this outside of Central Park. I don't know why, but I like the shots that are outside of Central Park. I like the little sandwich board where it used to say Phoebe Buffay and now says carrot cake.
00:38:12
Speaker
yeah I like that set decoration of outside Central Park. And Stephanie comes along um and this is where know Phoebe asks her if she knows these couple of chords and Phoebe gets a little snobby when she finds out that her guitar doesn't have a strap, but Phoebe's does.
00:38:29
Speaker
yeah Yeah. Oh, she kind of looks down her nose at her. Like, oh, very nice. As she's walking away, she starts singing an ugly song about Stephanie. Stephanie.
00:38:46
Speaker
We've talked about instruments we've played before, I'm sure. But in case we haven't, have you ever played the guitar? Have you ever tried to play? Not really, no. Like, ah everybody in my house,
00:38:59
Speaker
plays some sort of guitar or bass or whatever. And so I'll, but beyond that, no, I'm, uh-uh. Now I did play church bells.
00:39:10
Speaker
I knew how to do that. so and my i hope that's on your IMDB because that's a pretty nifty skill to have. I'm just saying. Every day's a school day, 39 minutes. I did not know that. Bong, yeah.
00:39:24
Speaker
Bong, yeah. um yeah That's amazing. that is That's quite a skill. I like it. Thank you. Thank you. Yep. ah But yes, so Stephanie goes in, Phoebe breaks into a mean song.
00:39:37
Speaker
we're back We're back with Chandler and Joey. They're calling the transit authority, right? yeah because Chandler's writing a book. You know, what would happen if? um And i mean, understandably, they're in an enormous panic.
00:39:51
Speaker
Of course. God, could you imagine? I... I kept thinking about that. Like, could you imagine what, uh, I, uh, I don't know that I want to tell him myself for this, but like, I've lost my kids in a department store before.
00:40:09
Speaker
yeah And things like that. it It does. It happens. And, but that feeling where you're like, oh my God, I can't find the kid. That's a terrible feeling.
00:40:22
Speaker
Right. Could you imagine? Like, you have, like, no idea.

Parental Fears and Musical Rivalry

00:40:27
Speaker
You are out in the open, and you have literally no parameter of where they have gone. Right, they could be anywhere, right. Yeah, that's terrifying.
00:40:40
Speaker
yeah yeah Speaking of losing something that's not terrifying, did you ever find your season one notebook? No, no. I feel like it's got to be probably at the hotel in Fort Worth.
00:40:53
Speaker
That's probably where it is. But yeah, no. Okay. and It just reminded me of that. Yeah. Well, they kind of, they aren't terribly helpful, but I guess the they get some advice of of where to go, you know, where a baby would be taken.
00:41:09
Speaker
um But we go over to Central Park and this is where I guess you have the extended scene of Stephanie playing. um oh or is that not yet nope that's not yet this is where stephanie says she's going to play a song about her first love lost love because zachary and then the door the door flies open and phoebe uh drowns her out um which is again fantastic i love the way this is they play off each other um We go over to health services where you noticed all the door numbers and I didn't notice there even was a door number.
00:41:44
Speaker
um Ben is there. Now, did you recognize the guy behind the counter? I'm not, I'm, we must've talked about this.
00:41:56
Speaker
and i categorially I did recognize him. Like I have seen him in something before, but it did not, I couldn't tell you where or why. See, I can't remember. i It's one of these things I know we've talked about, but unfortunately, i don't remember if you loved the show or you didn't like it.
00:42:13
Speaker
But he is in the office. I love The Office. I thought you did. He's Hank, the security guard. Oh, okay. Yeah. Yay. Good old Hank. Unfortunately, rest in peace, Hank. He passed away years ago now. Yeah. I think he's 18. But yeah, he was, I saw and like, that's, it took me a second. That's, that's Hank. Yeah. couldn't remember his name.
00:42:36
Speaker
you remember whatever they call him? And then he's, hey, Hank. You. Yes. this so Hank is one of those characters in the office that isn't around much, but when he is, he's great.
00:42:49
Speaker
He's a great, great character. Yeah, okay. Uh-huh. Yeah, but they end up running into the nursery, and they don't know which one is Ben, and they have this whole debacle about clowns and ducks.
00:43:03
Speaker
Well, heads head for ducks. Ducks have heads.
00:43:09
Speaker
What kind of scary ass clowns came to your part? Great dialogue. Oh, yes. Well, they're just so, oh, he's got that cute mole.
00:43:19
Speaker
Well, the mole came off. Right. And then they got a flip for it. it Yes. his head and it's yeah like everything about that scene was funny of course this scene wouldn't work in in if there was a hint of reality that they let just these two strange guys who are not related to either baby go in choose a baby and leave with no supervision at all no supervision at all it would nobody's signing anything there's no there's there's yeah nothing going on yeah
00:43:53
Speaker
yeah Just go in choose a baby. Well, and they've been, you know, he's like, whenever they very first go in, I'm assuming one of you is the father. And then this, we're both the father. That's right. They they like have embraced that stereotype that yeah they've been trying to avoid all day. um Yeah.
00:44:18
Speaker
I don't know. It's so silly. It is. and and like just and I would assume that leaving a baby on a bus, now you might get a slap on the wrist, but that also could be some kind of crime, some kind of child endangerment.
00:44:32
Speaker
and Neglect. Child abandonment. Abandonment, yeah. I don't know if it is or not, but it it seems like they wouldn't probably just let you leave with a kid. but Whichever one, especially if... Yeah, that's crazy.
00:44:46
Speaker
But whatever. It is the It is the 90s. Everything. Fair game. Fair game in the It's all fine. Now, here's the very, very long scenes of her singing.
00:45:00
Speaker
Right. I love that. I love that that exists. I will watch that today. And there's a light flow in the and the coffee house and everybody's just sitting there listening in it.
00:45:14
Speaker
kind of pans over to Rachel who's watching and then she'll kind of look out at Phoebe and then they go back to her singing and yeah. And then, you know, we looked it up and I see that, oh, she's the lead singer of the Pretenders.
00:45:28
Speaker
Right. Yes. Which was big at that time. which Right. Okay. So that all kind of falls into line. And um what's funny is that on her IMDB page, it's,
00:45:43
Speaker
tied to happy feet. And I'm like, why would they care? Like, and that was in 2006. Like that hadn't even happened yet. But yeah, she's credited huge for the music and and happy feet.
00:45:56
Speaker
And, and then Joseph's like, oh yeah, that's blah, blah, blah. She's the lead singer of pretenders. I was like, oh, so then you Google her and then that pops up and states and and went down the IMDB rabbit hole and then is that she's got credited for the music videos, but right like that's not, yeah. um intra I didn't know she had anything to do with happy feet. I just know songs in the nineties.
00:46:24
Speaker
yeah well I'm looking forward to watching the DVD of that. um I do like that Rachel goes outside and kind of consoles Phoebe a bit.

Cameo and Future Role Foreshadowing

00:46:33
Speaker
Said that she'd requested Smelly Cat because it's our favorite.
00:46:38
Speaker
um And then I'm sure you noticed the guy that raced back. Giovanni Ribisi. It's Grace Jr. Yeah. Frank Jr. Yeah, not Frank junior Jr. But just Frank Jr. Again, a tiny role, couple of lines, but there's something about the way he runs away and he's all sort of disheveled with the shirt kind of all over the place.
00:47:01
Speaker
yeah i said Well, okay. And what I noticed too is he yells, Christine! That is not his future wife's name. That's right. That's right. Nope.
00:47:13
Speaker
Because I had to go and look because that was something else that we were talking about. And that's Alice. Alice is his future wife. just occurred to me, I wonder what he's 18 when he and Alice get married.
00:47:27
Speaker
the How many years in the future is that from this episode? I have no clue. If it's not this This season, it's gotta be soon.
00:47:39
Speaker
It's gotta to be soon, right? it's It's in the next season or two. Yeah, I don't, it's one of those things that kind of gets lost in a bit of a blur. um
00:47:51
Speaker
Yeah. Yes. Yes, it's good. It's good. Yeah, because, yeah, I just, I do love it. Okay, because she, Phoebe's having their baby,
00:48:05
Speaker
whenever or the babies, whenever Ross is marrying Emily.

Significant Friends Events and Iconic Songs

00:48:12
Speaker
Yep. Season four, I think is when we start to see Frank and Alice.
00:48:19
Speaker
Okay. Because then in season five, is it five or six is whenever Monica and Chandler are quiet and sneaking around? Yeah. It's five, five when Phoebe gives birth the triplets. So that's all in the same.
00:48:34
Speaker
yeah Same old time. day yes Yeah. So we're we're getting close. Season four is, I'm sure, season four ends with Ross saying, spoiler alert, Ross saying Rachel at the altar.
00:48:46
Speaker
Yeah. I think that's the cliffhanger. Yes, for season four. Yeah. And then then that's whenever but Monica and Chandler are sneaking around.
00:48:57
Speaker
Yes. That next season. That's, yeah. that That's whenever we start getting whenever it's really good. Mm-hmm. um but yeah so she makes a little bit of money but i just i like the way rachel comforts her here um but we kind of finish well the penultimate scene ross and monica are sitting discussing all the times they've hurt each other um over the years a little foreshadowing here um where ross says i hope ben has a little sister
00:49:29
Speaker
Oh. Yes. Just like he and Monica. Yeah. Uh-huh. Just a little tiny thing I noticed. Oh, that's cute. because ah In my head, i but I'm like, well, I guess he doesn't because, you know, he just kind of falls off the planet.
00:49:48
Speaker
and Yeah. Ends up with Emma, although we never see Ben and Emma together in a single scene. Right. Yeah. But I assume that Ben knows about Emma. We'll we'll go with that. I would hope so. But Chandler and Joey come back in with Ben.
00:50:04
Speaker
Ben doesn't cry when Monica picks him up in the look of panic on their faces. Oh, yeah. So good. that's So good. ah But then starts to cry and the the relief washes over their faces.
00:50:18
Speaker
um And that's when Ross goes to change him, as we talked about in Bamboozled. sees something written on Ben's behind and goes to chase Joe Joey at the apartment.
00:50:33
Speaker
um ah Again, that would be a pretty big thing to forgive. Accidents happen, things happen. It wasn't intentional. But if you forget to take my child off a bus because you are flirting with somebody, that's a pretty big deal in my book.
00:50:50
Speaker
so So my wonder would be, I wonder what the story is that they told if they said, that's true did they you know, yeahy yeah you know oh I thought Joey had them and I was carrying this and this, and I thought Chandler had them and you know, who knows.
00:51:08
Speaker
This is fine. Um, he just, said i had a whole bunch of crap and he had a whole bunch of crap and we were talking to the ladies and yeah it could it could happen like it's i could see it but we we end in central park and do you know why this is such a momentous scene in the fraser universe in the fraser universe why not fraser friends also say phrase i no idea neither would i why was i thinking fraser
00:51:40
Speaker
In the Friends universe. In my head, this is a pivotal moment in the Friends universe. Well, is it? i She's trying to teach her a smelly cat.
00:51:54
Speaker
Right. And smelly cat, you know, comes up later. And the way that they sing it, and then that other girl changes it. And it ends up being a big deal. But- I believe this is the very first time we hear the Smelly Cat song.
00:52:12
Speaker
I don't think, I think Rachel mentions it earlier. Yes. I think that's the first mention of it. And this, and I thought that I did a quick Google. Google seems to think that I'm right, which usually doesn't.
00:52:25
Speaker
But it looks like this is the very first time Smelly Cat is ever mentioned. is this episode yes it's life changing my life has been changed now yes yeah it's just such a such i mean it's just iconic with the show um but yeah we kind of end there um last week we struggled with our gunther central parks a little bit but where did you fall this week yeah okay this week i falled i falled wow
00:52:57
Speaker
I fell with Chandler. Chandler's hilarious. He's so funny. He's so, I mean, just consistent one-liners that were hysterical. And um and that that whole scene with that ends with the kind of scary clowns came to your birthday. yeah yeah I mean, I watched it through twice, but both times that made me laugh out loud because that was funny.
00:53:25
Speaker
And um yeah, so I went with Chandler just because he's hysterical. I like it. He is hysterical. And I think if it wasn't for... One scene in particular, I probably would have gone for Chandler too.
00:53:38
Speaker
I'm going with Rachel. I love the way she sits outside with Phoebe and consoles her. She sticks up for her inside of Central Park um with Terry. And again, that's... She requested Smelly Cat.
00:53:51
Speaker
She requested it. And I think it's, it's in my head, it's still a bit new for Rachel this one. Standing up to people. not getting what she wants and having to fight for what she wants a bit. And she's stuck up for her friend.
00:54:05
Speaker
So because of that, I'm going to go with Rachel this week. Awesome. All right. We're saying listening to to ah to Stephanie um you know singing and and we're enjoying it. How many cups of coffee are we having while we listen to Angel in the Morning? like I'm having seven and an espresso shot.
00:54:28
Speaker
I like it. i like it. I'm going to see your seven and espresso shot and raise you one more cup of coffee. I like this one a lot. I'm coming in at eight and a half. All right. Excellent. Yes.
00:54:40
Speaker
Yeah, i again, I kind of like to look at the main storyline of Ben, which I think is funny and played really well. And then having the crossovers.
00:54:52
Speaker
But the the B plot of Phoebe, I think, has done really well. So I think for me, that's strong. So I'm definitely going with an eight and a half over here.
00:55:03
Speaker
All right. Excellent. I like it. I love it. Well, let's think. Any final thoughts before we wrap this episode up? Yes, I just want to talk about that song for a minute, Angel of the Morning.
00:55:17
Speaker
Yes. All right. So that song was originally written in 1967. Really? It was written by a man named Chip Taylor, and it was first recorded by Evie Sands.
00:55:30
Speaker
But it wasn't until a year later, whenever Mary Lee Rush... redid it and then it made it into the billboard charts and i didn't know that i thought it was a pretenders original no and then juice newton which is typically whenever you hear the version like on an oldie station or whatever it's the juice newton uh version that you hear and that one was released in 1981
00:56:05
Speaker
Very interesting. I had no idea that song had such a history. It sure does. It sure does. And and it's ah it's a great song. And it's one i feel like everybody knows that song. You might not know the history of it. You might not know why you know that song, who originally sang it or anything like that.
00:56:26
Speaker
But it's just and I love, love this version of it. So I'm really excited for you to go and watch the full song. or yeah It's not the entire song, but it's big, huge portion. big chunk of it. All right. yeah That will happen this afternoon, without a doubt.
00:56:46
Speaker
um But yeah, if we are done on that note, o next week next week is the one where Ross finds out. john so on but um A pivotal moment in in Friends, the Friends storyline here.
00:57:02
Speaker
The one where Ross finds out. But yes, on that note, Woolison, thank you so much. And everybody out there listening, thank you for listening to the Purple Door podcast.
