Introduction to the Podcast
00:00:06
Speaker
Well, hello, welcome to this week's episode of the Purple Door Podcast, a friend's rewatch pod. I'm one of your hosts, Alistair, alongside Dian. Dian, how are you today?
00:00:17
Speaker
I'm excellent, Al. Excellent. Enjoying my weekend. and get you better A very busy, fun weekend you have had.
Weekend Stories and Weird Al Concert
00:00:27
Speaker
Very busy, very fun. Got to go see Weird Al with my family. And my favorite part, I love me some Weird Al, but my favorite part was watching my 11-year-old son laugh hysterically and cheer.
00:00:42
Speaker
So that, it was awesome. Lots of good people seeing. Just a good time. I love it. Sounds like the perfect weekend.
Discussion on Phoebe's Dad Episode
00:00:52
Speaker
But how can we top off a perfect weekend other than getting stuck in straight to random bamboozled? We will be talking about the one with Phoebe's dad.
00:01:01
Speaker
And I love that you reminded me a little bit of what this episode was about, but I'd forgotten other pieces. So it was i was excited to watch it. So what I will tell you, though, is that Parts of this episode i was thinking of, but then I was also confusing it with later whenever we actually meet Frank at the funeral. Yes.
00:01:28
Speaker
oh Yeah, that's where i I got a little confused and couldn't yeah quite remember you know yeah Phoebe met that or quite what happened. So it was good to revisit this episode.
Bamboozled Trivia Game Begins
00:01:41
Speaker
ah Well, how many questions do you have for Bamboozled today? Twelve. Seven, eight, nine, ten.
00:01:51
Speaker
I have twelve and a bonus from Kate. All right. Look at us go. Why don't you want to start us off? Sure. In the opening scene, what's Ross doing?
00:02:06
Speaker
Oh, that's a good question. Let's see. In the opening scene,
00:02:14
Speaker
is Ross decorating a Christmas tree? Ross is not. He is not. Phoebe's over there doing something with the Christmas tree. Then she looks across and she sees ugly naked guy.
00:02:27
Speaker
That's right. And then it pans over to Ross. He's doing something pretty specific. And then... It goes over to the girl. is he sitting at the kitchen table doing something? No. Nope. He's over on the couch.
00:02:44
Speaker
He's on the couch. He's over there in the living room. Not far from Phoebe. Yeah. You're going have to give it to me. I don't remember. Okay. So I had to watch it because i was he's holding a menorah and then he's got like a screwdriver or something. I think he's cleaning out the excess la Ah, that's very specific.
Comparing Friends and Frasier
00:03:07
Speaker
Yes. like it. I didn't remember that at all. Yeah. Well, and I just, I like watching for the Jewish things that pop up. Right.
00:03:18
Speaker
And the Christmas stuff. Because it's very, you know, it's not there in your face, but like that right there totally made sense and tracks for what he would be doing.
00:03:30
Speaker
i It's one of the things I love. We've talked about Frasier before, my other other favorite show. Sorry, that's my computer going nuts. Let me turn that down. um Oh, we can't. I can't hear it. Oh, yeah. Okay. It popped through my ears. Okay.
00:03:45
Speaker
is, you know, Frasier has a son with Lilith in Cheers. And in Frasier, obviously, they bring that relationship forward. But, you know, Frasier celebrates Christmas, but Freddie is half Jewish because Lilith is Jewish.
00:04:00
Speaker
And some of the funniest episodes of Frasier are where they're playing the the sort of the Christian holiday and the Jewish holiday off of each other. And it's just superb. So I like it in Friends 2.
00:04:13
Speaker
um Yeah, when the menorahs come out. um Well, let's see. ah certainly We certainly know the answer to this first question from the coffee house, the first scene in the coffee house.
Birthday Near Christmas Stories
00:04:25
Speaker
What date is it at the beginning of this episode? It's the 23rd, Christmas Eve Eve. That's exactly it. Happy Christmas Eve, Eve. Yes. It is also one of my good friends growing up, her birthday.
00:04:39
Speaker
Ah, like It's always happy birthday on Christmas Eve Eve. I love it. What a great day to have a birthday. Well, it probably depends. My father-in-law's birthday is Christmas Eve.
00:04:53
Speaker
And um while that's very nice, I think it probably gets overshadowed. I've got two friends who have birthdays on Christmas day and always thought that would really stink.
00:05:05
Speaker
Actually. Like, I think I would just choose another day and just, I'm going to celebrate my birthday on another day. Your half birthday. Yes. That's what I think that's what I would do.
00:05:18
Speaker
Um, all right. What have you got for me? All right. So who all did the girls tip with Christmas cookies?
Rachel's List of Ross's Flaws
00:05:29
Speaker
Oh, I think I've got three. All right. So the super, Mr. Trigger, the newspaper delivery guy, and the mailman.
00:05:42
Speaker
Very good. Nice. All right. I think I was surprised they got a newspaper delivered. and it starts But then again, it's the 90s. People did more than now. And you do see them reading the paper. So it makes sense that they get it delivered.
00:05:58
Speaker
And he did the crossword puzzle. How? That's right. Although I don't know if the right answer is bite me, bite me, bite me. I mean, I'm not familiar with musicals, but I would go see that one. and All right. For you, the second question.
00:06:17
Speaker
Where did Ross get the picture frame that Ben is going to give to his parents? Oh, third floor Macy's ah home something.
00:06:27
Speaker
Home furnishings? You are correct. Home furnishings it is. Nice. Yes. um All right. So what did Ross do with the slinky after Rachel wasn't impressed?
00:06:41
Speaker
I've got thoughts on the slinky. He gave it to Gunther. Yeah, he did. Yeah, go now. And what did we notice about this?
00:06:54
Speaker
Well, Gunther lives in a place of stairs. He says, like, go nuts. I'm not sure. Oh, okay.
Exploring Gunther's Character
00:07:00
Speaker
Well, oh, maybe I'm wrong then. But, like, I got to see Gunther say something to Rachel, but you didn't whenever he leaving.
00:07:11
Speaker
And so is this not the first time that you've seen Gunther, like, actually have a line? We've seen him have a line once before, ah think.
00:07:24
Speaker
Okay. I think. Okay. Okay. Yes. We'll need to double check that. Okay. Well, as much as we have talked about Gunther and everything else.
00:07:38
Speaker
Yes. And then in the episode where Ross kissed Rachel. Yep. He's had a line there, but it got cut out on your version. Right. Right.
00:07:49
Speaker
And so I was like, have we seen him talk another time? i don't know. But it was, yeah, that was his line. Well, I'll need to have a look at that. yeah Gunther.
00:08:03
Speaker
man Underrated. Love love some Gunther. He's so good. So good. Um, let's see. Okay. So my quest, my third one for you, this is a little tricky, maybe a bit unfair.
00:08:16
Speaker
Phoebe's grandma brings out a box with the alleged photos of Phoebe's dad. What decoration is all over the box?
00:08:28
Speaker
Wow. Yeah, this is, this is gold. Wasn't it? Oh, it, Yeah, that's a very predominant color of what it was that was painted.
00:08:39
Speaker
e type of ah shade. does I have no clue, Al. All right. Yeah, that was a different one. It was a gaudy box. yeah It was. It had sunflowers all over it, which would be the yellow, the gold. You know, that's where that would come from.
00:09:00
Speaker
All right. Go for it. What did Phoebe think her dad did for a living, and what does he actually do? She thought that he was a world-famous tree surgeon in Burma, which is just great, but he's actually a pharmacist.
00:09:16
Speaker
Yes, very good. And speaking of Phoebe's dad, what's his address?
00:09:24
Speaker
ah It's Drive. five laurel drive In Middleton. I've got 74, but... Dang it! I had 74 and then I had changed it to 75. Oh, how funny. Because I wasn't sure.
00:09:40
Speaker
and out well. Oh, well. Yeah, I'm sure you're right. I'm sure it is 74.
00:09:47
Speaker
All right. You're up. Yes. All right. What were three things that were on Rachel's list for Ross's?
00:09:57
Speaker
Oh, yes, because that's one of my questions. I've got them. ah He's whiny, insecure, obsessive, and googles bonus points for gutless and too much hit gel in his hair.
00:10:11
Speaker
yeah Very good. Yeah, there we go. Way to get all five out. Thank you. That's right. Just got lucky that that was one of mine. When Ross and Monica come in with supplies for the party, they have three bags with them.
00:10:26
Speaker
Two of them are plain brown bags, and one has the name of a place, or name of a store. Mm-mm. No. Roscoe's. No, it is, don't know how pronounce it, Zabar's or Zay-bar's, and it's a real bagel place.
00:10:42
Speaker
Oh, wow. Huh. Yep. Yeah. And ah both Kate and recognized it. And we're like, maybe we've had a bagel from there. We're not sure. But we both recognized the name. That jumped out at us.
00:10:54
Speaker
Nice. So who broke the radiator? ah Ross broke the radiator. That's right. Nice. Broke the thing off the top.
00:11:04
Speaker
Yeah. um I'm going to ask, but again, this is unfair. I just spotted a tiny, tiny detail. um Phoebe's grandma hands her the keys to the taxi.
00:11:18
Speaker
There's a key chain on it along with keys. Holy cow. Yeah, yeah, that's unfair. This is not fair. What what's what is the key chain? An apple. You know what? You've got the right color.
00:11:30
Speaker
So at least you get an espresso shot for that. Is it lips? Yeah. It's not. It is a red dice. Oh. Yeah. um but I knew that was unfair, but I'm like, you know what? I'm going to write it down.
00:11:45
Speaker
I love it. All right. ah Who ended up solving the issue with the radiator? That would be Joey, who turns it off underneath. And I've got some thoughts about that when we get there.
00:11:58
Speaker
Okay. Because know absolutely nothing about radiators. Right. And I know... i i I know that my car has one too.
00:12:09
Speaker
Right. This is true. And there you go. This is true. And they need water, I think. Yes. Yeah, I think it depends on the type. Some take oil, some take water.
00:12:19
Speaker
But yes, yes, a fluid to heat up. d There you go. I'm basically an expert. An expert. I think so. I think so ah so. When Phoebe says, wish me luck, Grandpa, who is the picture of?
00:12:39
Speaker
Oh, it's of Albert Einstein. It is indeed. Yes. Yeah, I've got, that's one of my questions. Who does Phoebe think is her grandpa? Right.
00:12:50
Speaker
I love it. All right. and So why can't Traeger get the part for the radiator until Tuesday?
00:12:59
Speaker
Is it because the store is closed? Uh-huh. All right. Had to think about that one. All right. This one I've been looking forward to asking you because I believe you have asked me the same question many episodes ago.
00:13:15
Speaker
Whoa. Yes. And there's two parts to this sort of. um What is this number on the top and on the side of Phoebe's cab? Yeah. ah I can tell you the one on the top.
00:13:27
Speaker
Okay. 7E85. So that was going to be my original question. And then I saw the door open and I saw a different number on the side. And was like, I think Wilson asked me what that number was.
00:13:40
Speaker
Okay, so here's the deal, and I have. um But in this episode, on my TV, on the DVD, it's not clear enough to be able to piece together what it says and what the number is.
00:13:57
Speaker
so The original question was just number on the top. Is that valid excuse? It is a valid excuse. You got my original question right, but on the side it is 3609.
00:14:09
Speaker
Wow. There you go. Nice. Well, that was my question number 11. All right. All right. What
Phoebe's Family History
00:14:18
Speaker
kind of car did Phoebe's mom drive?
00:14:24
Speaker
Wow. What kind of car did Phoebe's mom drive? I can't even remember where that might have been mentioned. I have no idea.
00:14:35
Speaker
Okay. Okay. ah So Phoebe's grandma will always remember her dad as the loser who knocked her up and stole her.
00:14:48
Speaker
going to guess a Buick LeSabre. Nope. Gremlin. Gremlin. That's right. Mm-hmm. That's right. Yeah. my dad My dad apparently drove a Gremlin whenever my mom and him very first got married, and he drove a Gremlin. I love that.
00:15:07
Speaker
Mm-hmm. Yep. a speaking Speaking of cars, why doesn't the taxi have a seatbelt in the front passenger seat? And there's my question number 12. Oh, dear. Because it got cut out by the paramedics. It did indeed.
00:15:25
Speaker
So are you out of questions? I'm out Al. I have three more. for Two from me, one from Kate. Great. I am ready. All right.
00:15:36
Speaker
How much does Ross tip Mr. Trigger and why? Why? Okay, so he gives him a 50 the first time because he's seizing the day.
00:15:47
Speaker
And he thinks that it's because the girls gave him cookies that he won't fix the radiator. Right. And then he gives him another 50 because Rachel egged him on.
00:16:01
Speaker
Yes. She egged him on, so it ended up being $100. $100, absolutely. Well, really, $95. ah hundred dollars absolutely but well ninety fiveve Oh, because he gives five back.
00:16:14
Speaker
That's right. That's right. All right. What does Rachel say the mistletoe actually is? Basil. Yes.
00:16:25
Speaker
Basil or Basil. However you pronounce it. but yeah um Okay. For everyone back home. Who calls it Basil? Our friends back home.
00:16:37
Speaker
Hey, I'm sorry. Is that like from the mixed up files of Mrs. Basil Lee, Franklin Waller? It might just be. don't know. I don't know.
00:16:48
Speaker
Okay. And then Kate has a bonus question for you. So I said to Kate that this afterwards, it dawned on me that, and I've not fact checked this, but I don't think we see inside the boys apartment at all in this episode.
00:17:04
Speaker
Mm-mm. And she said, she agreed, she said, we don't, but we do see what's hanging on their door. who I know! You know it? I do!
00:17:16
Speaker
It's giant here I didn't notice it at all. I was like, when did we see their door? yeah Yes, at the very beginning because they open up. The girls have the big wreath.
00:17:28
Speaker
And then they open up the door. And then in the background, you can see this giant white front of a reindeer. yeah I missed it completely. Yeah.
00:17:40
Speaker
i will need to go back. You'll to let Kate know. I saw it. I saw it. Right. Yeah. You guys have a much better eye than I do. I have a note.
00:17:51
Speaker
I have it in my notes that there's giant reindeer on the door. I love it. I love it. Yeah, didn't see it. ah Well, you said that's in the first episode, episode, which were out first steps the first scene. We're starting off in the girl's apartment.
00:18:09
Speaker
Ugly naked guy is decorating his tree. um And then Joey, let's see, Chandler and Joey come in. Yeah, and that's when you see the reindeer. That's when you see it. Okay.
00:18:21
Speaker
And they ask about tipping. How do you feel about tipping? um Just in a general, I feel it can be a a bone of contention. People sometimes disagree. Okay.
00:18:34
Speaker
So talking about tipping like at a restaurant or like that or what? See, this is the whole, this is the minefield restaurant.
00:18:46
Speaker
ah You know, or if you go to, i don't know, Starbucks, I think you can tip if you go in. Yes. You know, you can tip on the app. Right. and and Okay.
00:18:57
Speaker
Now, stuff like that, like at a restaurant and people are waiting on you. um at at Starbucks, they're making your drink. And if it tastes good, I'm all about it.
00:19:13
Speaker
um But if people are being paid below and they're having to do a service for you that otherwise like you can't, this makes me think of Dwight.
00:19:28
Speaker
This makes me think of Dwight. Right. He's like, I won't tip somebody who does something I can't do myself. Yes. Yes. Tips his proctologist. Right. I mean, but like, I, I will always tip,
00:19:44
Speaker
Like 20%. Right. That's what you do That's the right thing. Because being a server is hard. Right. i And I will die on that hill. That is a hard job that not everybody can do.
00:20:01
Speaker
we i tried it. And I was a terrible waitress. And I think I've talked to you about this. Right. Yeah. But it's hard. Yeah. And people are terrible. People can be so terrible.
00:20:14
Speaker
And like whenever we went on our tours on vacation and stuff like that, like being a tour guide, appreciate. It's your way of showing appreciation. Yeah. And thank you for doing a good job.
00:20:29
Speaker
Now, if you just took my order, And that's it? Like, why am I tipping you? Right. I agree with you here.
00:20:41
Speaker
You took my order. I'm going to go sit down. You're going to call my number. I'm going come grab it. I'm not going to tip you. Why would I? Right. I'm also going to be busting my own table. Like, come on.
00:20:52
Speaker
Right. That's ridiculous. yeah I agree with you. And I get really torn because like if somebody is particularly good waiter or waitress and they're friendly, but blah, blah, blah, I will tip very generously. Like here comes 30%. Well, you know, we' just...
00:21:11
Speaker
yeah if but If you're just in a foul mood and not friendly and like, I don't know. I'll still tip, but your tip, I don't know. I'm not just going to tip for the sake of it.
00:21:23
Speaker
Although I do. But definitely I'm with you. Not up at the counter. If I'm going up to the counter and stuff, no. Hey.
Views on Tipping
00:21:32
Speaker
So I was listening to this other podcast the other day and it was talking about the allure of the mean friend and they were going on this whole thing about like social norms and, and how like mean people, some people are drawn to them and everything.
00:21:48
Speaker
And so they talked to some waitresses and they like ran an experiment with these two different waitresses and, um There was a girl and she was a waitress and she was always like really friendly and outgoing and all of this anne ah shoot there was a group that came in and so she was just normal. She wasn't real chatty with them. You know, she wasn't unfriendly, but um she only like engaged in anything extra at the very beginning of the meal and at the very end of the meal.
00:22:25
Speaker
And the rest of the time she was just shuttling and and doing and not friendly. right And then there was another one that she was like overly friendly to.
00:22:36
Speaker
And they tipped the same. Right. But then there was a person that was ah like a regular. And normally, you know, she says she's normally real chatty with him and all of this. And this time she just wasn't.
00:22:53
Speaker
Like he was trying to engage in conversation with her and she just kind of would shut it down. And hand it and he always tipped 22% all the time. She said it was always the exact same.
00:23:06
Speaker
And then because she acted like that, he tipped her like 35%. Because he thought something was wrong with her or something. Okay. Yeah. That's what I thought.
00:23:18
Speaker
Yeah. But the guy used that to prove his point that people um like grovel to people who are Yeah. And I was like, yeah, he could have just known that that was way out of character and was like, here, or maybe this will brighten her day a little bit. Right.
00:23:37
Speaker
ah So I choose to believe that people don't aren't all terrible. but a I'm right there with Just an interesting aside, if it really was, it was, I don't know.
00:23:49
Speaker
It made me think about like mean girls from high school and stuff like that. Right. not Not that I knew any of them or anything. Of course not. No. It's an interesting an interesting topic, how people tip. and dev Yeah, it's it's it's a shame that it's needed, I do think.
00:24:10
Speaker
It'd be nice if people would charge me a couple of dollars more for my dinner and make the and have the staff have a better living wage and exactly be able to afford their rent um and not have to rely on tips.
00:24:24
Speaker
Well, and and like I said, they work so hard. Oh, I could. yeah I worked in a bar. I was a barman, but I couldn't do the food. I know that that I would struggle.
00:24:37
Speaker
One summer I did, and I was terrible at it. I couldn't. It was awful. I was awful. It's it's hard work. Yeah. Yeah. Not enough respect given in that.
00:24:49
Speaker
No, it's not for me. Yeah. But Monica, they's she's certainly not tipping with cash. She's tipping with cookies this year. Because they're broke.
00:25:00
Speaker
They're broke. Which, A, I understand. And, B, I think it's quite a sweet thing. Like, I get it. Everyone loves a little bit of extra cash. Who doesn't? but I think I'm kind of on board with Monica.
00:25:11
Speaker
You know, when our neighbors have brought over some home-baked goods, that's a really sweet, lovely touch. It really is. I like it. Yes, and our next-door neighbors do that every year, and it's so sweet.
00:25:27
Speaker
It's always sweet, and I'm always like, man, they're so awesome. I want to do that. Yeah, I think it it means we get busy. I think it means a lot um when people do that.
00:25:39
Speaker
The newspaper delivery guy obviously didn't appreciate it, as we discussed, and bamboozled, because it gets slammed against the door pretty hard as well. um And then yeah he's he's written across the crosswalk. He smashed the cookies in the paper.
00:25:57
Speaker
it's In the sports section. That's right. In the sports section. um And they have the conversation about the cookies.
00:26:08
Speaker
Do they say these things? And then mon oh Phoebe says she's had brownies. Oh, the brownies. before That's right. Are they funny brownies? um but Not particularly. Yeah. That's a great, great line. Yeah.
00:26:24
Speaker
it's ah Yes, what that's one of my favorite in this episode. Not particularly. um We bounce on over to Central Park and then Joey kind of can't believe it's Christmas already, but I've got to talk to you about this slinky.
00:26:40
Speaker
Why is Ross showing up with a slinky for Rachel? a no steps in in the apartment. B, that's a terrible gift unless... I mean, I suppose they've got steps going down as you know in the hallway.
00:26:54
Speaker
Right. Of all the things, why a slinky?
00:27:00
Speaker
Why a slinky? Exactly. And he does the little rhyme from the commercial. but do you Do you know the whole commercial song? Because I've never heard it before, but again, Kate knew it.
00:27:12
Speaker
Oh, wow. Yeah. i'm Who's something downstairs? Everybody knows it's Slinky. That's it. but And I can see the whole thing and like with the little kid on there. like thought And I thought Slinkies were so cool. And I just wanted a house that's stairs.
00:27:31
Speaker
Right. ellen but and But yeah, it seems like a totally random... Random... That he picked up in a store. Like, he you know, he punches this. Well, did Because it's not in a package.
00:27:50
Speaker
That's true. That's true. Was it something that somebody gave him at work, maybe? Or left on? I don't know. It's just weird. Yeah. Just an odd and an odd one.
00:28:02
Speaker
Very lame for somebody who's trying to make up with her. Yeah, that I agree. and he And he is a good gift giver.
00:28:15
Speaker
You know what? The Harrison Harris towels look pretty fluffy, pretty soft. ah Yeah. I think I would enjoy those towels. Yeah. The shirt for his mom, questionable at best.
00:28:28
Speaker
Right. Well, I was more thinking of the brooch that he got Rachel. Ah, that's right. Yeah. You know, like he is capable of giving good gifts. So he's got the brooch. He apparently got Carol, that crystal duck in that same scene that she wanted. Yeah. And then he's got towels. He gets, oh, he gets Phoebe, that bike. That is...
00:28:51
Speaker
alter its peak Ross goodness when he buys Phoebe bicycle later on. So you're absolutely right. He is a good gift giver. Yeah. So that's... Boo!
00:29:04
Speaker
but Boo! Boo! We'll give him a tiny bit of credit for being a good gift giver. um But he's got his, let's see, his parents a frame from Ben, but Phoebe thinks that's her dad in the frame.
00:29:23
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Poor old Phoebe. Poor old Phoebe. um Is this the only time we, I know we see the apartment more, but is this the only time we actually meet Phoebe's grandma?
00:29:39
Speaker
I think so. The next time that we see her, isn't she in an urn? I think so. I think she is as well. I think this is the one and only time. ah very well yeah Very well acted, a good character.
00:29:51
Speaker
But Phoebe comes over to her grandma's to look at um pictures of her dad, and miraculously he's just in the forest or at lots of graduations in all of these pictures in the box.
00:30:05
Speaker
um So... Yeah, Phoebe confronts Grandma and the Grandma kind of admits that he's a pharmacist upstate and this isn't isn't her dad.
00:30:19
Speaker
But it it made me laugh. Like whenever she keeps pulling out these pictures and here he is with a little boy in a meadow. That's right. And a graduation another and another graduation. ah graduation And then their calls are out the line about, you know, I smell smoke because somebody's pants are on fire.
00:30:46
Speaker
Grandma. Oh, man. ah That made me laugh. That made me laugh a lot. um But I felt so sad for her. Yeah.
00:30:57
Speaker
And sad for the grandma, too. Because... It's a good point. Like, what do you do? Like, they had this story concocted and, you know, and then she died.
00:31:13
Speaker
And so do you continue on with that line? Right. you know. Or tell Phoebe the truth. Yeah. Yeah. Like, I don't know. Yeah, that's a tough conundrum, that one.
00:31:25
Speaker
Mm-hmm. Yeah. Well, she finds out that her father is a pharmacist upstate.
Phoebe's Emotional Conflict
00:31:31
Speaker
Before we go back over to the girl's apartment, Chandler's reminiscing about his father being dressed up in, I can't remember how he describes it, but he's like, he said anything about Christmas.
00:31:42
Speaker
Yeah, a red suit and patent leather belt and boots. Right. Stumbling around drunk and woke everybody up. And who said anything about Christmas? And you're like, oh my gosh. And that just just fits the bill for for Chandler's upbringing, it seems.
00:31:59
Speaker
um I think Joey and Chandler come in and they're not worried. They haven't done their Christmas shopping yet. And it got me thinking, are you like an hourly shopper or a last minute shopper? I'm somewhere in the minute in the middle.
00:32:13
Speaker
But I'm not... you ah You won't see me buy in Christmas before Black Friday. Like, Black Friday is my... That's when it starts.
00:32:25
Speaker
That's it. Yes. But I have been known to be grabbing a last minute gift or two on the 23rd and unfortunately printing out pictures on the 24th.
00:32:40
Speaker
It happens to the best of us. Yes. Yeah. It's ah without a doubt. Kate likes to do the Christmas shopping. So we just kind of go, right, this year, this is the budget.
00:32:51
Speaker
And she has at it. She likes doing it. She's so good. She is, and because she's very organized by nature, so she has you know little spreadsheet,
00:33:04
Speaker
her Amazon account. It's much easier, actually, if just one person does it. And then I'll get, you know, her present and thing a few basic little things for other people. But that's, yeah, works out pretty well in this household, ah doing it that way.
00:33:20
Speaker
We find out at this point the mailman doesn't like Monica's cookies either, which, again, she's a chef, and I'm sure she makes non-mocklet delicious cookies. Yeah.
00:33:32
Speaker
Oh, of course she does. yeah And at the very beginning, Phoebe picks one up and is eating it. That's right. While she's walking around. So, I mean, they're going to be good.
00:33:42
Speaker
Yeah. But, you know, what I was wondering is that I wonder if this wasn't... why financially ah financially hard for everybody right then. Like if unemployment was really high right something along those lines to where somebody is like, oh my God, why didn't you just give me a couple of dollars?
00:34:07
Speaker
You know? Right. and We kind of go through those times where it seems like everybody is hurting. Yes. And so I was wondering if maybe...
00:34:19
Speaker
That'd be really interesting to find out actually. okay another thing Or if it was just for fun. you know Right. um This is where Ross cha ends up challenging Rachel to make the list about him that we discussed in Bamboozled.
00:34:34
Speaker
And Rachel fires off some zingers. like She comes right right you know out the gates pretty quickly. What was it? Whiny, insecure, obsessive, gutless, too much hair gel.
00:34:46
Speaker
I think you would agree with all five. I would. thought you might. And the thing is, is she even like, like elaborates a little bit on the gutless thing.
00:34:57
Speaker
Yes. You don't ever seize the day. And she kind of takes a stab at him and, a you know, and it's like, yeah. And then she's, I do feel better. And he's just like, rah, rah.
00:35:11
Speaker
Hey, here comes Ross. Hey. Phoebe's, and we go good it's he's got some redemption to make. Yeah, he does. A long way to go. luck, Ross.
00:35:24
Speaker
yeah and We go back over to Phoebe's grandmas and Phoebe's calling information. Pretty much calling everywhere, it seems. um Naming off towns, trying to find her dad.
00:35:35
Speaker
And then grandma comes in and confesses that she knows the address. Did you notice what was behind the couch on the wall? ah The scary picture. That's it. It's Gladys. The scary picture.
00:35:48
Speaker
Yes. Oh, my gosh. Because there ends up being two. Yes. Oh, she makes another one, doesn't she? She does. i don't remember quite the details, but you're right. She makes two.
00:36:01
Speaker
The scary picture. That's so funny. I can't wait until that makes it. Yes. Gladys is so funny. um Yeah. one my What was the answer? I was going to ask you, how do you know if you've gone too far past Phoebe's dad's house?
00:36:20
Speaker
don't know. If you hit the Dairy Queen. That's it. Dairy Queen. That was it. You've gone too far. But Phoebe can take the cab. um And we go straight. Phoebe is suddenly in the cab.
00:36:33
Speaker
Joey and Chandler are waiting outside of Central Park. There was a there was a slight... ah production error in this scene. Yes.
00:36:44
Speaker
I remember reading this a long time before, so I looked for it. And I didn't see it the first time I watched it, but saw it the second time. When the taxi comes around the corner and it bumps up onto the car, you can see a big metal, not rope, but, you know, huge piece of metal attached to the back of the car, the taxi that's pulling it onto the sidewalk.
00:37:10
Speaker
Really? Yeah. Now I'll have to go back and watch. Yeah, not the right warrant. But yeah, um I mean, thick gauge metal. And you can see it hooked on the car and it kind of bounces when the car bounces up onto the curb.
00:37:23
Speaker
Oh, fun. So that's kind of fun. um and I love the way Chandler gets in the front and then basically panics with the cheat sheet and no seat belt. And they end guessing in the back with Joey. Well, okay.
00:37:38
Speaker
But that line, whenever he's like, is Phoebe here yet? Oh, the invisible. The invisible, yeah, hop in. Right.
00:37:49
Speaker
That was so funny. Oh, my gosh. I laughed, I laughed, I laughed. To me, yeah it's like I guess it's really Matthew Perry. I think most people would you know sort of say, oh, yeah, in the invisible taxi and end the joke there.
00:38:02
Speaker
But you're right. That kind of hop in, add something to it. You know, it's so good. ah ah But they end up getting in the real cab, and Phoebe, I'm assuming, is not a very experienced driver, judging by the cheat sheet and the way that she arrived and leaves.
00:38:22
Speaker
um yeah But then we do see Ross in fine form here. He's being obsessive and bugging Monica about being obsessive. um So vintage Ross.
00:38:35
Speaker
But this is where he bring yeah he ends up breaking... The radiator so just snaps the knob off the top, um which i mean I'm sure can be done.
00:38:46
Speaker
um i was thinking the radiator we had radiators in our house growing up, but it was a plastic knob at the bottom. But I'm sure it's the same kind of thing. But I don't understand. From this point onwards, why don't they just open a window?
00:39:03
Speaker
That's a very good point. Yeah. Just, I mean, you you're spending the money on the heat anyway and you don't want it be hot. So why not just open some windows?
00:39:17
Speaker
Right. Yeah. it Just a window. a window. The one that's right beside the radiator. The one that you let, oh wait, did Ross crawl in through? Does that window open?
00:39:28
Speaker
Yep. That's how they get in there to the balcony. The one with the sort of side one. Yeah, that's like a door side window. That is a window. Yeah, why not open that? That's so silly.
00:39:39
Speaker
I've always wondered if the the big windows in front of the balcony, if those open up in any way or if they don't. I don't think we ever see them open up. Well, we do. Do we? Whenever they're all inside and they're sending, wait, are are they standing out on the balcony?
00:39:54
Speaker
Whenever they try to tap ugly naked guys. Yes. Oh, that's a good point. That might be it. Were they standing in the window? think they standing the window. think they would have to be to get the long poking device in a straight line. Right.
00:40:10
Speaker
Yeah. So that window opens. Yeah, but we don't ever see. I agree. Yeah. Interesting. Open those windows up. Your party's going to be fine.
00:40:20
Speaker
Well, how stupid. That never even occurred to me. Right? Because Well, and I don't have a lot of experience with radiators as we had talked about earlier.
00:40:33
Speaker
Yeah. But like, why wouldn't you just unplug it? Well, it's it's... Do they plug? No, this one will be a central heating running out the gas lines, I'm sure.
00:40:45
Speaker
oh Because they have they have gas in the apartment, we know, because they think they smell a gas leak much later on in the series. um So it's almost certainly these old radiators are all wild you know they're all hooked into each other.
00:41:00
Speaker
Oh, okay. Into a mains gas supply. Okay. Well, in my defense, I don't know anything about that at all. And and you've but you've lived either in this area or farther south basically your entire life, right? So radiators yeah are not commonplace.
00:41:19
Speaker
No. Not at all. ye So I don't i don't know. Okay. Well, there you go. Yeah. Why didn't you open a window? Yeah. Opening window would solve all the problems here.
00:41:32
Speaker
Um... Phoebe's sitting outside in her cab, sitting outside of dad's house. And she's not sure about going in. I think she's, it's, it seems like she's tried a couple of times.
00:41:45
Speaker
Cause I think Chandler says like, you got to the mailbox this time or something. Yeah. Yeah. He exactly says that. Yeah.
Joey Fixes Monica's Radiator
00:41:53
Speaker
it's got to be pretty scary, pretty scary stuff for Phoebe. Cause you're right. You, she's even though she's not, she never knew her dad.
00:42:02
Speaker
Um, You're losing the the the the illusion if he turns out to be a jerk. Right. Yeah. yeah I thought that was sad.
00:42:13
Speaker
Yeah, it was sad. We'll talk about it whenever we get to her part. Oh. Yeah. But that it wasn't there. Is that later? Oh, that's right. Yeah, that's in a couple of scenes time.
00:42:24
Speaker
Yeah. um Yeah, because I've got thoughts about this too. Yeah. um Yeah, before that, the girls are having this party. um in the apartment and Trigger comes up to the party and yeah have Ross tips him for Christmas and then Rachel's basically like I can't remember what she says but sort try harder you know you need to do more so he's yeah she says something about yeah wasn't it like way to seize the day or what about seizing the day she made some comment about
00:42:56
Speaker
their conversation referring back to the list at the very beginning. Right. That, uh, yeah, and it was definite.
00:43:08
Speaker
Oh, Oh, Monica told him, looks like he's playing baseball. That's right. Yeah. that's And then he's like hardball. And so then he went and and did that.
00:43:19
Speaker
And it was after that that she says, nice seizing the day, gel boy. And then she walked right to left Yes, gel boy. i do like Trigger as a character.
00:43:31
Speaker
would say he's so nice. He is. And spoiler alert, he will certainly get my gun through Central Park for another episode. um later on because he's in a few more um but I just he seems like a nice guy you know like I don't know I like him a lot and I'm sure a bit like being a waiter or a waitress not an easy job you probably see the worst of people right you know and people probably blame you for everything a bit like Ross not really blaming him but the store is closed until Tuesday there's nothing he can do
00:44:07
Speaker
you know, and, and it's not his fault. Um, I think he would fix it straight away if he could. Um, so we go back over Phoebe and Joey and Chandler. They're still sitting in the cab.
00:44:20
Speaker
Um, yeah and she says she's scared. He's a dirt bag, I think. And so decides that this was enough for today. Um, My only thought was, well, not really thought, it's just a slight continuity error.
00:44:34
Speaker
Because we do find out later on that Phoebe has met her dad when she was a baby, because he used to sing a certain song to her. I don't know if you remember.
00:44:48
Speaker
No, I don't remember this. It's when they first meet and she realizes that that's her dad and he realizes. And he says, oh, you're a baby when you were trying to, when you were fussy or something. He says, go to sleep, go to sleep.
00:45:02
Speaker
Why won't you go to sleep? Oh, yes. the tune of Smelly Cat. yeah So they they do, they have met, but maybe that was just grandma, you know, slept the timeframe's slightly off.
00:45:14
Speaker
He abandoned them very soon after she was born. Who knows? Yeah. Yes, it was just something that jumped out to me. But what are your thoughts on that, on Phoebe kind of deciding not to go?
00:45:25
Speaker
Yeah, like I got it. Whenever she said, you know, yesterday he was a famous tree surgeon and then, you know, he might be a really cool pharmacist guy, but he also might suck.
00:45:38
Speaker
Right. You know, and either way, he's not who I thought he was yesterday. And so maybe I'm not ready. Yeah. and it's And, you know, like, she's just such a good character.
00:45:53
Speaker
Like, she really is. She is. and For me, she's the most diverse. ah You know, she can be ditzy and silly, and then but she can also be really touching and and and some beautiful moments with Phoebe. Like, there's a huge range of her character.
00:46:12
Speaker
Yes. which Which I i love. I think is wonderful. Yeah. Yeah. And I think we end this episode with, be we're back in the girl's apartment. Joey walks in and just turns the gas off at the bottom.
00:46:27
Speaker
um off How does Trigger not know how to do that? Would be my first thought because it's gas. So it's going to have like a, most things like the gas will have two ways of turning it off in case something like this happens.
00:46:41
Speaker
So gas doesn't pour into the building. How would Trigger would know surely to turn it off in the bottom? Of course he would. Yeah. But it made me laugh because they're all sitting there and they're all crabby because they're hot.
00:46:56
Speaker
right like Why are you all hanging out in here still? Right. but But then whenever he comes, holy crap, it's hot in here. Y'all should turn it down. And she's like, why didn't we think of that earlier? Right. you are Only that's not what she says.
00:47:13
Speaker
She says, like, we could use that kind of thinking in earlier tonight. You know, real sarcastic. But then actually you could have used them earlier in the night.
00:47:25
Speaker
It's ah it's an an easy joke, but again, Matthew Perry, that whole oh holy crap, it's aren't he yes so well delivered. He makes it a great joke.
00:47:36
Speaker
like It's it's yeah very, very funny.
Wrap-Up and Next Episode Preview
00:47:40
Speaker
but I think that's kind of where we end the episode, right? this is We're still in the girls' apartment. And then they get to open up their gifts from Joey and Chandler.
Humorous Gift Exchange
00:47:52
Speaker
Okay, so I didn't see this in the episode, but I thought... Is is it stuff from the gas station? It is! Right, okay, I've seen it before on the on the TV, but it wasn't on the stream. Like, this is this was not on on the stream. And I was like, I'm sure this is the one where it's like a lemon-lime soda and toilet seat covers, all of that.
00:48:17
Speaker
Yes. Yes, and so that's exactly right, because... and Like that's the closing scene where they're all in the girl's apartment and then they've got this box.
00:48:28
Speaker
Right. you know Nothing's wrapped. And so he's like what a windshield wiper blades. And then she's like, I don't even own a car. but You will, or you'll think you do with this new car smell. You know, and then and they give Phoebe toilet seat covers and she's like genuinely excited about it. As Phoebe would be. Yes. And then Ross, you know, they give him the cola drink and a lemon. And a lemon lime. That's right. Yeah.
00:49:01
Speaker
And then they give Monica something else and then Monica and Ross trade. Right. So, you know. But I just... Oh, it's so silly. I was sure that was at the end of this episode. So it's good to know. Good to know that for some reason was just cut out.
00:49:18
Speaker
ah yeah um kids that's Yes. it's a very funny... Yeah, that to me, again, that lemon lime line... um I just for some reason I find that very very funny see and then i laugh at Phoebe's line whatever is she's like just so funny Yes.
00:49:45
Speaker
She's hilarious, which leads us quite nicely into I've got a funny feeling about your Gunther Central Park. You might feeling. I might have a suspicion of where we're going with this. But again, remind us, assuming that it is Phoebe, remind me of why why you've chosen Phoebe this week.
00:50:02
Speaker
Okay, so you know you you always talk about you know Sometimes whenever you're giving it you're talking about the actor or the actress And then other times you talk about the character and um for this one.
00:50:17
Speaker
It's like both it's Phoebe as a whole because like that line at the very end whenever she's like toilet seat cover like that's hysterical And then, but then the character, like, ah you genuinely feel bad for her.
00:50:34
Speaker
you and And you feel the conflict and the worry and the anxiety. And i so I guess that is more Lisa Kudrow than Phoebe. But like...
00:50:46
Speaker
It's such an interesting mix of pulling on your heartstrings and, oh, my goodness, i really i really feel sympathy for this character.
00:50:58
Speaker
And at the same time, she's hysterical. So So funny. Yeah, so maybe it's more Lisa Kudrow versus Phoebe, but whatever. Right, but either way. For me, it's all one and the same, I think.
00:51:12
Speaker
Yes, yes, the total package. And for all the reasons you listed, I also chose Phoebe um slash Lisa Kudrow. It's just, dear she was the one that stood out. a very Phoebe central or centered episode, and she just nails it. It's just so good.
00:51:33
Speaker
Yes. I don't think there was anyone else who came close. No. um Close this week. Although I did very much appreciate Graham. Yes.
00:51:44
Speaker
Yeah, I would like to have seen more of Graham. um She seemed kind of like a bit of a spitfire, like a fun character. Uh-huh. I think very much... Yes, that eclectic edge.
00:51:58
Speaker
It's just occurred to me, I wonder how long she's lived there, because I wonder why Phoebe was homeless if Grandma lived there in Manhattan. Who knows? But, ah yeah, why she didn't go stay at grandma's Grandma's house? Maybe she was rebellious and up to no good, and Grandma didn't want that.
00:52:18
Speaker
Maybe. I don't know. Yeah. It's a good question. Yeah, just occurred to me just now. Well, I'm curious as to how you feel ah about next week's episode, which, of course, I don't want to know until we discuss it.
00:52:33
Speaker
But wait. Oh, there's more? Al. Yes. If you were going to be ordering your steaming cups of hot coffee.
00:52:44
Speaker
I forgot. How many cups of hot coffee would you give, sir? So i I give this a seven and an espresso shot.
00:52:55
Speaker
it's It's a good episode. It's a good episode. Phoebe carries it, I think. I liked it a little better than the list. I think there's more fun funnier moments. um So we're coming in at a seven and a half, which again, it's a good score. It's a good score.
00:53:12
Speaker
But it's not one of my favorites, certainly. Okay. so And what about you? I feel all the exact same things, but I gave it eight. Right. And because I did not like it less than the one with the list.
00:53:29
Speaker
so Okay. So liked it, you know? like So that's where I'm at. Yeah, I went up one. Seven last week, seven and a half this week. There you go so I didn't review what I did last week. I don't remember.
00:53:43
Speaker
Yes, I just happen to have it in front of me on the same piece of paper. Otherwise, there's no way I would remember. um Okay. Yeah, thank you for jumping in. i completely I don't know why I skipped over that.
00:53:54
Speaker
Late on the Sunday. Not late. Because you're just excited about next week. I am. It's like double Ross because it's the one with Russ. Oh, gosh. Oh, God.
00:54:06
Speaker
Yeah. yeah Okay. I'm not going to say anything else. I am excited to hear your opinions on the one with Russ, which will be coming out next Thursday morning, as our as our episodes always do.
00:54:26
Speaker
Seven o'clock on a Thursday morning, just in time for your drive to work. But any other kind of closing thoughts? Yes, yeah I do.
00:54:38
Speaker
So, Al, at the very beginning of this episode, we were talking about Gunther's first lines. Yes. And yes.
00:54:49
Speaker
So, depending on which... um which version you are watching. Okay. His first line was either ah whatever it was, come on in or ah come on or whatever it was whenever he was leaving The thing in the one where Ross finds out?
00:55:14
Speaker
Yes. or it is Gunther's first line in Friends yeah. He says it to Ross in season two episode, the one with Phoebe's dad.
00:55:27
Speaker
Dun! jump bu Gunther's first line if you're streaming it. Because that's right. I did not have that scene where was it Rachel's locking the door or something and Gunther can't leave yet. I didn't have that. So yeah, this was but for us streaming on HBO people or wherever you get friends.
00:55:46
Speaker
This is it. A monumental moment because we do love Gunther. Yay, Gunther! Good for Gunther. Nailed his first line and got a swanky. I'd like to change my Gunther central perk.
00:55:57
Speaker
Right? To Gunther. Yeah, to Gunther. I love it. You're free to do so. That's good. No, I was just kidding. I was just kidding. good to Good to know, though. now I'll never forget that the slinky is not only weird, it's Gunther's first line in in the streaming the streaming universe.
00:56:19
Speaker
That's fantastic. Yeah, well, we will be back next week, as always, with the one with Russ. But again, as always, thank you all for tuning in to the Purple Door Podcast.
