Today's reading will cover Jeremiah Chapters 2-6. Today we will read about how God described the behavior of His people and how their behavior made Him feel. We will read about God feeling cheated upon by an unfaithful spouse. We will read about His heart hearting. We will read about How God longs for His people to return to Him, even one, that He might pardon the city. In our discussion for daily application we will once again talk about how important it is to know God, and in knowing His heart, to know what hurts Him so that we can avoid doing so. Our God is so faithful, kind, and loving to us. It is right that we should be faithful to Him, not turning away from Him or His kind love to worship other, false, gods or to turn to ourselves for provision or trust in people when God has shown us time and time again in our own lives how HE is the one who provides for us, especially in our times of need. Let us be faithful to our faithful, loving, kind God and avoid grieving Him and His Holy Spirit by remaining true to Him and His ways, loving Him with all of our hearts, minds, and souls. We are one with our God, made whole and complete in Him. Let us behave as such.

Introduction to Bible Reading Session

00:00:03
Speaker
Good day, everybody. Today is June 15th, and you are here with Robin at In the Family Way Coaching. We are here for what? That's right, our daily Bible reading.
00:00:16
Speaker
We are reading through the Bible this year, getting the whole big picture of God's story from Genesis to Revelation using the Day by Day Kids Bible written by Karen Henley.
00:00:28
Speaker
If you are new to this event, welcome. I am so glad that God led you here.

Benefits of Chronological Bible Reading

00:00:33
Speaker
This is not ah the complete Bible in the sense that it has every single detail, as you would find in what we are calling your Big Bible, but it is a very complete overview of the big picture.
00:00:48
Speaker
from Genesis to Revelation. And what's awesome about this version is that it is written in chronological order so that we have an easy way of understanding God's story.
00:00:59
Speaker
So sometimes in the Bible, in different books, the same stories are repeated. And so it can be confusing when we are reading them on a daily basis or and on a and a one-off basis here and there as to what we are reading, if that is something that has already occurred, that we have read about, or whether this is something different.
00:01:21
Speaker
And a lot of times, too, is that people have the same names as other people in the Bible. So this version has consolidated the entire story into one timeline.
00:01:32
Speaker
So it's easy for us to understand God's Word. Because it doesn't do us much good to read God's Word if we don't understand what we are reading.

Understanding Through Chronological Reading

00:01:42
Speaker
So we are reading and understanding the whole big story.
00:01:46
Speaker
And like yesterday, I was mentioning that what I have found is a personal benefit to this is that when I attend service on the weekend at church, now when we are talking about and doing other readings, I have a sense of where it is in the timeline instead of it just simply being relegated to Old Covenant and New Covenant, which is what we are calling the Old Testament or New Testament.
00:02:11
Speaker
So this Bible has really helped me have a broader understanding as well as a more in-depth understanding of what happened and when in the Bible.

Introduction to Jeremiah and Judah's Behavior

00:04:05
Speaker
But what I wanted to do is give us a little bit of perspective so that as we read today in Jeremiah chapters two through six, that we have a little bit of understanding.
00:04:16
Speaker
Jeremiah is considered or is called the weeping prophet. Okay. So ah he was often very sad about the news that he had to ah convey for God, as well as the fact that nobody was listening.
00:04:34
Speaker
And today we are going to hear more about God. We have read in the past, if you have been following along for a little bit, that God delights in us knowing him.
00:04:46
Speaker
And part of how we can know him is to read his word. And today he's going to tell us about things that make him sad and how he feels about his people not turning to him.
00:05:00
Speaker
So keep your ears open so that you can hear the things that God is telling us and how he makes him, how the behavior that is going on in his nation of Judah works.
00:05:13
Speaker
Because remember, Israel has already been taken into exile. it's Hear how God describes how Judah is now making him feel. In the New Testament, or the New Covenant, now that we have the Holy Spirit, this would be paralleled with grieving the Holy Spirit.
00:05:36
Speaker
What makes God sad? What makes the Holy Spirit sad? Now that we have understanding that we are one with God, we can see more readily and feel that Holy Spirit when he is sad by what we do.

Unity with the Holy Spirit

00:05:52
Speaker
Because just like in in this time of Jeremiah, we can still grieve God's Spirit. The Holy Spirit is an extension of our Holy Father. there So we are one with the Spirit.
00:06:07
Speaker
The Spirit has been placed in us. We have the mind of Jesus. Jesus only says what he hears from God, and then Jesus tells the Holy Spirit.
00:06:20
Speaker
So it's like a chain. And then we are the completing link. And so together, through that link, we have become one with God.
00:06:35
Speaker
So let's open up our hearts and our ears and our eyes today to see what makes our Holy Father sad so that we can avoid doing these things that hurt him because he is so much.
00:06:53
Speaker
He is so kind and he is love. And so he takes care of us and he loves us. He is gracious and it's just not right to try to make him sad.
00:07:04
Speaker
And it's not okay to make him sad even unintentionally. We might not do it on purpose, but let's learn about God and see what it is that makes him sad.
00:07:15
Speaker
Are you ready? We have a lot to read today.
00:07:21
Speaker
Jeremiah chapter two. This is entitled, A Bride's Love.

Jeremiah's Call for Repentance

00:07:29
Speaker
God said to go and tell this to the people of Jerusalem. I remember how you obeyed me when you were young. You loved me like a bride loves a groom.
00:07:42
Speaker
You followed me through the desert. My people were special and holy to me. What did your fathers find wrong with me?
00:07:53
Speaker
Asks God. Why did they go so far away from me? They followed idols that were no good. They became no good themselves.
00:08:06
Speaker
Look at the other nations. Do they change their gods even though their gods aren't real? But my people traded away their great God.
00:08:18
Speaker
They traded him for idols that were no good. My people did two wrong things. First, they turned away from me.
00:08:31
Speaker
Second, then they chose to shoot to trust themselves. I am like a river of living water for them, but they are like a well they dug themselves.
00:08:43
Speaker
It can't even hold water. My people were not born to be slaves. Then why are armies taking them away? My people, you are to blame.
00:08:57
Speaker
You turned away from me, the Lord your God. Your own sin will bring you trouble. Think about it. See the trouble that comes when you turn away from me?
00:09:10
Speaker
You get in trouble. Then you ask me to come and save you. So where are the idols you made? Let these fake gods save you.
00:09:23
Speaker
Chapter 3 Come Back Josiah was the king of Judah, and God said, Did you see what the people up north in Israel did?
00:09:36
Speaker
They worshipped idols. I thought they would come back to me. but they did not. So I sent them out of their land. Judah saw it, but Judah did not care.
00:09:50
Speaker
The people have worshipped idols too. Judah's people only acted like they were worshipping me and obeying me, says God. Come back, Israel, says God.
00:10:05
Speaker
I won't frown at you anymore. That's because I am kind and loving, says God. I won't be angry forever. Just tell me that you know you sinned.
00:10:19
Speaker
You turned against me, ye the Lord your God. And you worshipped other idols. You did not obey me, says God. Come back to me and I will help you keep following me.
00:10:35
Speaker
Yes, we will come back to you. You are the Lord our God and we know you will save us. We sinned against you, God, and we did not obey.
00:10:50
Speaker
Chapter 4, Jeremiah 6. A war cry. Come back, if you will, Israel, says God. Put away your idols.
00:11:01
Speaker
Don't do wrong anymore. Promise. Be true and fair and right. Then God will bring good things to the nations.
00:11:12
Speaker
They'll call God great.
00:11:16
Speaker
Here's what God says to Judah's people. Obey me. Do what is right. If you don't, I'll be angry. Look, he is coming like the clouds come.
00:11:29
Speaker
His chariots come like a fast, circling wind. His horses are faster than eagles. This is bad news for us. We lose.
00:11:41
Speaker
Oh, Jerusalem, clean the sin out of your heart. Be saved. This happened because of the way you acted.
00:11:52
Speaker
says god this trouble came to you because of the wrong you did it is very sad it hurts my heart and jeremiah's heart was very very very sad My heart pounds inside of me, he said.
00:12:13
Speaker
I can't stay quiet. I heard the horn of the fighters. More and comes. Our enemies tear up the whole land, and my tents are torn down in one moment.
00:12:27
Speaker
All of a sudden, my house is gone. How long will we see the flag of the army? How long will we hear the war horn?
00:12:39
Speaker
Chapter 5 and 6 Where the Roads Cross Tell this to my people, says God. Listen, you are foolish.
00:12:52
Speaker
You don't think. You have eyes, but you don't look. You have ears, but you don't listen. Shouldn't you treat me like someone one important?
00:13:05
Speaker
asked God. Shouldn't you I am with you? Who can I talk to? Who will listen? asked Jeremiah.
00:13:16
Speaker
How can I tell God's people what is going to happen? Their ears don't listen and they don't like what God is saying. It doesn't make them feel good. They are all wanting more and more things.
00:13:31
Speaker
says God. The prophets and priests lie. They think they can tape over the hurt places. They act as if things were not that bad.
00:13:42
Speaker
They say, peace, peace. But there is no peace. Do they feel bad about the wrong things they do No, they don't feel bad at all.
00:13:56
Speaker
Their faces don't even turn red when they sin. So I will bring trouble to them for what they have done, says God. Stand where the roads cross each other.
00:14:09
Speaker
Look down the roads. Ask, which is the good way? Then walk that way.
00:14:19
Speaker
Look. An army is coming. It's coming from the north. A great nation is moving in from far away. The people carry bows and spears.
00:14:30
Speaker
They are mean. They are not kind. They ride their horses, and it sounds like the seas roar. They come out to fight Jerusalem, says God.
00:14:45
Speaker
And that is the end of our reading today.

Layers in Jeremiah's Prophecies

00:14:50
Speaker
One of the other things that's important to notate about Jeremiah is that the prophecies contained within Jeremiah are deep. they They are three layers deep.
00:15:03
Speaker
There will be immediate fu fulfillment, which is when they had the 70 years of exile and they come back. And so part of the ah fulfillment of the prophecies when Jeremiah speaks about coming back and about what the judgments will be were fulfilled with the first exile.
00:15:25
Speaker
Then they will be fulfilled partially with Jesus is coming when he starts the Messianic era, which is what we are in now. And then there is also a third depth of the fulfillment of the prophecy, and that will be at the very end times.
00:15:44
Speaker
So Jeremiah ah is is delivering a very deep message here throughout his book.
00:15:53
Speaker
So did you hear how God feels? He is comparing Judah turning away like a couple, ah married couple.
00:16:06
Speaker
of a bride being so in love with her husband in the beginning. But Judah cheats on God. And she doesn't just cheat with one idol.
00:16:19
Speaker
she She cheats and cheats and cheats and cheats in this relationship that she had with God. and goes to many idols. God says, look at the other nations.
00:16:31
Speaker
Do they change their gods and they're not even real? And yet you throw me away. it makes God feel rejected and tossed away.
00:16:42
Speaker
makes God feel cheated upon. and God was faithful to his people. And yet as soon as they had trouble, who did they run back to Their beloved husband, their beloved God.
00:16:56
Speaker
like a wife who is running from somebody who hurt her and then comes back and says, save me, save and me. But God has always been there, but he is hurting.
00:17:09
Speaker
And he says, you even saw that how I disciplined your sister and yet you are still doing it. So God's feelings are very hurt.
00:17:19
Speaker
He says here that his heart hurts. It grieves His Spirit when we are not faithful to Him.

Impact of Human Actions on God

00:17:28
Speaker
So what are the things that we would do today?
00:17:31
Speaker
It says that they did two things wrong. First, they turned away from God. And second, they chose to trust themselves. We can do the exact same things today, can't we?
00:17:44
Speaker
The same things that hurt God's hurt way back then can still hurt God's heart today. When we turn away from God and we forget about the wonderful ways that He has taken care of us,
00:17:57
Speaker
And then we trust in ourselves. We trust in our jobs. We trust in our financial security. We trust in our friends. We trust in our cars. We trust in the fact that we have a home that we've paid off.
00:18:11
Speaker
We trust in the fact that we have plenty of food. And we forget about the fact that everything we have has come from God. We forget to give him a tenth of what we what he has given us.
00:18:25
Speaker
We forget that he is the one who loves us and takes care of us. And so these things hurt God. They hurt his feelings. We think of God as just being mighty and powerful and he is kind and he is loving.
00:18:40
Speaker
But we forget about the fact that God has feelings too. And when we are trusting in ourselves and turning away from him, This hurts him.
00:18:52
Speaker
And now that we have his spirit within us, what we do is when we we are grieving with the Holy Spirit. That is what it means. We are causing sadness to the Holy Spirit.
00:19:04
Speaker
When we are treating others poorly, when we are treating others unfairly, when we are mean and hurtful to others, these things hurt God. God says that they worshiped him and only acted like they were worshiping him.
00:19:20
Speaker
They weren't really worshiping him, meaning that they didn't they weren't acting, they weren't practicing what they preached. We like to say one thing, but then when it comes down to it in the moments when we are in situations, we need to remember that it is God's Holy Spirit that can empower us to do the right thing so that we do not grieve his Holy Spirit.
00:19:47
Speaker
In here, we see that
00:19:52
Speaker
the even the priests, even the pastors were lying to the people. It says in Jeremiah that God looked for even one person. Do you remember Sodom and Gomorrah when abram ah Abraham rather was ah interceding for his nephew Lot and he was concerned when God was going to destroy the city?
00:20:16
Speaker
He said, what if you find 30 people who are righteous? Will you save the city? What about 10? Five? And he goes down and down in number.
00:20:27
Speaker
And God said, yes, if there are even so many people who are righteous, I will save the city. And in Jeremiah, in our big Bible, God says, if there were even one person, just one person, would save the city.
00:20:47
Speaker
But there was none. Not even one single person. Can you imagine? You are a single person.
00:20:57
Speaker
And yet, if you were there, you would be the person who would have saved the city if you were worshiping God with your whole heart. But there was not one.

Encouragement to Live Righteously

00:21:08
Speaker
i'm going to turn to Jeremiah.
00:21:14
Speaker
Jeremiah chapter 5, verse 1. verse one says, roam the streets of Jerusalem. Look around and consider. Search through her squares if you can find a person.
00:21:28
Speaker
If there is one who does justice, who seeks truth, then I will pardon the city.
00:21:38
Speaker
But they did not find one. For God tells us here that there was none to be found. He says they are all wanting more and more things.
00:21:51
Speaker
Do they feel bad about the wrong things they've done, that they have done? No. They don't even blush when they do something wrong. They don't give it a second thought.
00:22:05
Speaker
God could find no one righteous to save the city, and it hurt his heart. So we are meant to be the light of the world. Let's not grieve God's spirit.
00:22:17
Speaker
Let us be ones who are set apart and holy by his commandments, by his love. We are called by Jesus to be his his emissaries in the world.
00:22:30
Speaker
to to witness and tell about God's transforming love and what it has what he has done for us in our lives. God wants us to speak well of him and to not grieve him, to tell others so that others can come together, as we read yesterday, to serve together with God.
00:22:50
Speaker
And that is our daily application today is to not grieve his spirit, to obey God, to not do those things that hurt him.

Motivation to Share Testimony and God's Love

00:23:01
Speaker
So I hope that you feel that God has lit your light today.
00:23:05
Speaker
and that you are motivated to share this event and to share your testimony and to share what God has taken you through with other people, to be God's witnesses, to let the other people know what grieves God and to help your brothers and sisters by being a good example, to not grieve the Holy Spirit, to not grieve God's spirit because God deserves all of our love.
00:23:33
Speaker
We love because he first loved us. So let us love one another and love God with all of our hearts and all of our minds and all of our soul. And then we will not grieve our Holy Spirit.
00:23:48
Speaker
So thank you for joining with me today. And I will be here with everyone again tomorrow.
