Introduction and Holiday Plans

Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to another episode of Daily Forest here at the Global Sports Podcast Network. My name is Stuart and joining me to talk about one season wonders at Forest in light of my my my selection being, unfortunately, in the news recently. First of all, we have Marley. Marley, how are you doing? Still rocking the yellow Christmas jumper. Was that every day until Christmas? We didn't expect to be seeing you wearing that.
00:00:32
Marley
Yep, that is every day until Christmas day and then on Boxing Day, I'll be at the game. After that, I'll be back to wearing a different forest shirt each episode. Hopefully the home shirt will be coming through soon.

Black Friday Shopping

00:00:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
you How long ago did did you order it? Or do you mean coming through from Santa on Christmas Day?
00:00:52
Marley
Ordered it on Black Friday, if I'm honest.
00:00:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, okay.
00:00:55
James Rigby
ah
00:00:55
Marley
So, still waiting.
00:00:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, some good deals there. James, you're you're wearing, thanks again for joining James. You're wearing, I think it's last year's shirt. Was it that also ah an end of season clearance sale or would you buy that?
00:01:07
James Rigby
Yeah, yeah, this is this is last year's end of season. and So try and get them in before they're all gone. But yeah, getting ready for Christmas. Got the tricky tree up. And yeah, it's a good look charm that for all the the Christmas games coming up.
00:01:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, we'll certainly get on to chat about our upcoming fixture list later on in the week. But for Wild Card Wednesday, which I always enjoy, we get to talk about something a bit different from what's in in the news at the moment.

One-Season Wonders: Michael Antonio

00:01:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've done our favorite South American players, our favorite matches against Arsenal, and an episode dedicated to Thomas Tuchel. But today, because he unfortunately suffered that car crash over the weekend, we wanted to do an episode just on Michael and Antonio.
00:01:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
and when we'll come to him, I think, last in our running order. I'll explain why he's one of my top five, if not top three, Forest players of all time. But it gave us the idea to do a theme of one season wonders.
00:02:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
So talking about other players like Michael Antonio, who only had one year at Forest, but they really did impress in that one year. So James, who would you like to

Oliver Burke's Career Journey

00:02:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
talk about today?
00:02:20
James Rigby
So but my player, he was there for more than one year, but senior team wise, he'd just come on the scene and he didn't even get a full season. and Oliver Burke. um I remember being at the games and I saw him, I can't remember who it was against now, but I saw him running down the wing. I thought, oh my days, who's that? you know He was the next big thing. and But then I think Fawaz, it was at the time, got his little spreadsheet out and realized,
00:02:47
James Rigby
the condition of being on too long so he needed to sell someone um and the the red bull team came came knocking for berk we got some good money for him but i think it's one of those kind of sliding doors moments.
00:03:02
James Rigby
you know You look back at the stories of Gareth Bale, who was almost coming to Forrest, but then he stayed at Spurs and became this superstar. Would he have become that person at Forrest? And kind of like that thing with Burke, if he'd have stayed at Forrest, would he have had an amazing season and kicked on um a bit like Antonio did, and then gone up there up the tree as such, but instead he kind of Didn't work out for him in Germany. and But yeah, it was fantastic. You guys remember him?
00:03:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, so what's um interesting about Oliver Burke is exactly it's a sliding dorm doors moment.
00:03:35
Marley
Yeah.
00:03:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's actually back in Germany now. He's at Werder Bremen. But he's had such an eclectic career. I think he's played for about 10 teams since Forest. And his six goals in that wonderful time at Forest was like half a season.
00:03:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
He still scored more goals for Forest than he has for all his other teams. He's never hit more than one or two at a huge variety of random clubs across Europe he's played for.
00:04:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Marley, I think in our memorable debut episode, talked about Thomas Lamb, I seem to recall, and that was one of the games on Verberk was best player in the world, as it seemed.
00:04:05
James Rigby
Wow.
00:04:16
Marley
yes and ah an interesting thing about Oliver Burke is that a man who used to work with my uncle who is now a hairdresser he is friends with someone in Oliver Burke's family and a few years ago when Oliver Burke first moved out to Germany my dad sent him one of my forest shirts on the season Oliver Burke played for us to send over to Germany to get signed by Oliver Burke and I still have it holding up on my wall to this day it is right here ignore this horrible sponsor
00:04:44
James Rigby
Wow.
00:04:46
Marley
but that is a beautiful little signature. And there is another shirt at the back of my room, which is an a away shirt signed by Michael Dawson as well.
00:04:57
Marley
So yes.
00:04:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Very nice.
00:04:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, Oliver Burks, I think, specifically yeah in that Burton game, it was 4-3, didn't he score two and set up two for the other two for a sombre longer, something like that, where, as as James said, he looked electric.
00:05:07
Marley
Please go.
00:05:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was certainly at the time felt he was too good for the championship. So it was certainly the case of it was our red, bright spark at the time suddenly sold off to to Red Bull at a time when it wasn't so common for young British teenagers to go abroad.
00:05:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
And it certainly seemed like we
00:05:23
James Rigby
but
00:05:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
We're going to miss out on our Gareth Bale or our Theo Wolcott if he was being taken from us. so um
00:05:31
James Rigby
Yeah, I kind of put him in the the brackets with you Michael Dawson as your main genus, you know, Brandon Johnson now going away to the bigger Premier League teams as it was at the time, and that he would kind of just become another one of those who did play at the higher level, but it just didn't work out for him, unfortunately.
00:05:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
and When we did our Academy episodes a few weeks ago, did we mention him once?
00:05:52
Marley
yeah
00:05:55
Marley
Yeah I mean the last two clubs I can remember him playing for are Millwall and for Birmingham City. I don't know if he's been anywhere else in the last few years.
00:05:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't think we did. um We thought thought out at the time he was looking so good, but the fact that we'd completely forgotten about him when we talked about the Academy just shows how his career just did not work out the way web we thought it might have done.
00:06:08
Marley
yeah i mean the last two clubs i can remember in playing for are millwall and for birmingham city
00:06:09
James Rigby
Yeah.
00:06:14
Marley
ah don't know if hes been anywhere else in the last few years
00:06:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, so they were both on loan from Verda Bremen.
00:06:19
Marley
interest
00:06:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, I'm not, she's had, I think, a permanent license. Forrest had been RB Leipzig, West Brom and Verda Bremen, but loads of loan spells. He's been on loan to Celtic.
00:06:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's been on loan in La Liga. He played for Alaves for a bit, so he's had such a...
00:06:37
Marley
And then there's an interesting portfolio of played for both players, the Forest and Birmingham, by the way, Trevor Francis, Oliver Burt, Gary Gardner, Lee Camp.
00:06:38
James Rigby
yeah what
00:06:51
James Rigby
produce the Alfie, just got us ah the full list. So Forest Youth, Forest on 18s, Bradford on loan, then Forest under 18s again, 14, 15, then 15, 16, Forest first team, that was when he started pulling up trees, and then to RB Leipzig, and then to West Brom, then from West Brom on loan to Celtic, then to West Brom,
00:07:21
James Rigby
Alves, West Brom, Sheffield United, Millwall, Sheffield United, Werder Bremen, Millwall, Werder Bremen, Birmingham, Werder Bremen. So, yeah, almost as good as Chris would.
00:07:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
But you know butdoma maybe he will, like Chris, would get better with age. Maybe he was that teenage sensation, didn't didn't quite work out for him after he left Forest. it And maybe and that that's going to happen in the future. Maybe his next move will be back to the world-famous city grounds, will be back amongst his family. Marley's uncle's dad's friend will be his hairdresser again. And then things all things will be all right. And yeah, maybe that's what he's been missing is the Settle Home, which, yeah, moving from from Nottingham to to Leipzig age 18 is not the and but my most common move people take. yeah maybe It could well be at least just just didn't just didn't settle it in that first move and since then it's been a spiral as he tries to work his way back to so home.
00:08:20
James Rigby
Yeah, it might be a little bit off topic on

Premier League Records and Player Pride

00:08:22
James Rigby
the Chris Wood thing, but maybe it's not. Maybe this is Chris Wood's one season wonder and that this will be the best season of his life and that next season won't quite be as good because we'll have a real big name up front.
00:08:36
James Rigby
Who knows? Who knows? But it was his birthday at the weekend and after the game, they gave him a present and it was a personalized mug. Have either of you seen it?
00:08:46
Marley
Yeah.
00:08:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, not seen him.
00:08:47
James Rigby
No.
00:08:47
Marley
Just leading the video.
00:08:48
James Rigby
Have you seen it, Molly?
00:08:50
Marley
Yeah.
00:08:51
James Rigby
Yeah, with the ah it's got ah a picture. I saw it on social media a few weeks ago, I think, um and they've they've obviously copied it and got it put on a mug. It's of Robin Hood, a famous picture of like Robin Hood, but they've with Chris Wood's face on it. Obviously, AI has put his face on it. It looks really good, ah but whoever did it, ah you know bravo, and you want to write into forest with your fig for your artwork.
00:09:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
marli
00:09:23
Marley
ah Yeah an interesting ah thing I saw today about Chris Wood is if he scores another 21 goals while at Forest then a Forest player who is actively playing for Nottingham Forest will be a member of the Premier League 100 Club in terms of scoring 100 goals in the league.
00:09:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, that's yet and it's an incredible, these sort of um records, I know, in in theory,
00:09:42
Marley
That is incredibly close.
00:09:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's a sky-invented football, a sky-invented Premier League records, but still it is a definite show of quality that someone like that playing for Forrest, scoring most of his goals for Forrest, is able to possibly become a real legend of the league.
00:10:04
James Rigby
Yeah and and when people start looking at you know the international players that we've got to have a player chosen for the first the men's first team for Brazil and called up and to have them chosen for England. It's a real like badge of honour to have those players going out and to for them to play as well. and Yeah, it's really good.
00:10:28
Marley
Another thing about Chris Wood as well is that I don't know if you've also seen that he's now matched Alan Shearer's greatness and that only him and Alan Shearer have of being the top scorer in the Premier League for two separate clubs.
00:10:41
James Rigby
Yes.
00:10:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
did you see his Match of the Day interview where he was congratulated on that and he was clear and no clue which Alan Shearer's two clubs were. So he's like, oh yeah, happy for Alan Shearer. He was grateful for those two clubs. um So he presumably, I'm assuming he knew Newcastle.
00:10:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was a former Newcastle player himself, but you tell Chris when, no clue that ah that Blackburn of course was, was the other team.
00:10:57
Marley
Black Earth. It'll be Black Earth, I think.
00:11:01
James Rigby
Bla bla, yeah.
00:11:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
But there is certainly the great conversation to be in.
00:11:05
Marley
aarron
00:11:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
And yeah, I think just to to wrap up on Oliver Burke, we had so much lost potential that We're on to Chris Wood's topic.

Surprising One-Season Wonder: Nelson Oliveira

00:11:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's just straight away that it shows that he truly was.
00:11:16
James Rigby
Sorry.
00:11:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, it's good. I think it works well. And he was such a one-season wonder that and we got he's we could briefly remember him shining so briefly and so brightly and then just didn't didn't do anything else for the remainder of his career.
00:11:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we'll quickly go into the first advert.
00:11:32
Marley
Yeah.
00:11:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then Marley, you can chat about your your one-season wonder. And yeah, it looked interesting to hear you talk about someone a bit more recent than in the forest, forest history.
00:12:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Marley, unlike Oliver Burke, your one season wonder achieved something in a forest shirt.
00:12:15
Marley
Um, I'd like to correct you there because I have thrown a curve ball.
00:12:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, okay.
00:12:19
Marley
I wanted to surprise you and James today. So the player I mentioned before we started recording is not the player I am going with.
00:12:26
James Rigby
Oh, you liar.
00:12:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought you were gonna surprise us is by having your first choice, Jed Spence, walk into your bedroom right now. So if you're listening, guys, we'll have to do another another episode on Jed Spence. So Marley, who is your curveball one season wonder?
00:12:39
Marley
Honestly, I think Jed Spencer's best left for a wildcard Wednesday specifically on that season. Maybe even on the all the six lone players we had that season. One season wonder I've gone with is a player who played for as around the same time as your two's picks. It is Nelson Oliveira.
00:12:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Also very good choice, very good choice.
00:12:57
James Rigby
OK.
00:12:57
Marley
He obviously came through at Benfica.
00:12:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Why I'm seeing that important person.
00:13:02
Marley
He obviously came through at Benfica. Went on a number of loans to Rio Ave. Pacos Ferreira, Deportivo, La Corona, Rene, Swansea and us before going to Norwich. While at Norwich he went on loan to Reading. He eventually went on to move to Athens, Palk and then Konyasbo and he's currently playing with another former Forest player, a club that we've just signed a player from called Victoria Gamais.
00:13:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, as you mentioned, I think was it was yesterday or or a couple of days ago, the the Tiago, hit he was a teammate of Tiago Silver and John Silver at Victoria last year, that's right. So I think there's one very particular moment in a forest shirt, I hope you're going to tell us all about.
00:13:47
Marley
Um, I'll be honest. I can't remember many in particular moments because obviously that's one of the seasons where I was banned from football, but I do remember that he was, uh, because my mom and stepdad thought I was too obsessed with it.
00:13:55
James Rigby
Whoa, whoa, whoa, why were you banned?
00:14:03
James Rigby
Oh, okay.

Owner Behaviors and Notable Former Players

00:14:04
James Rigby
I thought you meant by the authorities.
00:14:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Don't tell them you're doing your podcast.
00:14:04
Marley
I wouldn't, I would.
00:14:08
Marley
Uh, they thought that I was ah too obsessed with it. So I was not allowed to watch the sport or play it full stock.
00:14:17
Marley
ah but yeah I remember he was a it was a very good winger.
00:14:17
James Rigby
I'm getting there with Alfred.
00:14:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
like me a wildco essay on its own yeah We could re-educate Marley on what he missed during his ban. So you missed an Oliveira winner against Darby. That's what he's probably most most known for.
00:14:29
Marley
I remember him as a pacy winger, a lightning winger, a creative winger. I know he brought a lot to our team. and Honestly, I wish we had made him permanent.
00:14:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think he was signed in that summer, the year we had a transfer ban. So we could only sign free transfers and loans and we couldn't pay more than 10K a week, which even then in, was it 15, 16 season in the championship, having a 10K a week cap was significant.
00:14:48
Marley
Oh.
00:15:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
The average championship salary at the time was already well over 10K a week. So it certainly was a coup and a surprise that we signed him. As you said, he had been on loan at Swansea in the Premier League, the season four he came to us.
00:15:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
think I think it ends up with our top scorer with nine goals. I think you've probably got his Wikipedia up now, Marley, but I think it was nine goals. But the fact is, we can celebrate someone who scored nine goals as a top scorer, showed how mediocre that year was under foul as James.
00:15:20
Marley
it was yes he played 28 games for us got the nine goals within no 28 games it was the season we had our special gold trimmed kit and our golden blue away kit for our 150th anniversary year it was a
00:15:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's his knees, Marley.
00:15:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, so that it is again, i I let the side down. I don't often often wear forage shirts whilst recording, but I do have that that shirt with me. I bought it two years after that season.
00:15:56
James Rigby
um
00:15:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
I was still on sale hanging around the club shop for a fiver. So despite it being that anniversary year or such a mediocre year that even the club shirt was still available two years later in in the club shop in the in the bargain bin.
00:16:09
James Rigby
Was that the Darby game that he he scored at? Was that the one where Fowers ended up jumping on someone's car out the back of the main stand after us? Do you remember that?
00:16:21
James Rigby
He came out and whoever was parked there in the little white fiesta or something, he jumped on the bonnet and walked all over it, cheering. And I'm just like, how rude.
00:16:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
and We certainly attract some ah characters as our owners. Is jumping on a Fiat is it worse than spitting on the floor near a referee? I don't know.
00:16:41
James Rigby
but Yeah, you can imagine Maranakis jumping on a car.
00:16:44
Marley
ha Yeah, there's a reason Phawas wasn't our most popular owner.
00:16:47
James Rigby
Oh, dear.
00:16:51
James Rigby
you know I think I've got another one, you know and Ian Wright.
00:16:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:16:56
James Rigby
Ian Wright, in the knockings of his career, needed some money and was going out alone to the high bidder. and I remember but it was one of the years I had a Junior Red Season ticket and I couldn't believe we were watching Ian Wright in a forest shirt.
00:17:10
James Rigby
It wasn't very good, but it was Ian Wright in a forest shirt. so yeah
00:17:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, so that was yeah the first time someone other people had heard of was was playing for Forrest. That was my my second year um as a fan. They would have been yeah seven at the time. And that fact that someone would come on loan, who everyone had heard of it at school, well, E.E. Ian Wright, it was certainly yeah really cool having a famous player at Forrest for once. As you say, he he was good. I think he had two or three months on loan. He wasn't just picking up the paycheck.
00:17:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
like Andy Colden a few years later, ah right, he at least got a few goals in in the guy I've already read.
00:17:46
James Rigby
Yeah.
00:17:50
Marley
talking about players who have played for Forrest and been very famous there is another one who not many people know played for Forrest probably a lot of younger Forrest fans who are currently but younger than me I'd say don't know he played for Forrest and obviously it was
00:18:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
So Marley, let's interrupt you. Let's ah see if a producer, Alfie, who's a Forest fan younger than you, see if you can guess guess who you're gonna say. So give out Alfie one or two clue clues and see if you can guess who you might be thinking of here.
00:18:19
Marley
I don't know Alfie, a forest player, former forest player, he played for his own loan in the year 2000.
00:18:20
James Rigby
Go on.
00:18:25
Marley
He went on to become a very famous player, England captain at one point, I believe, but he only paid for two other clubs. One of them was Aston Villa.
00:18:32
James Rigby
Um.
00:18:36
James Rigby
And he was only alone. In the year 2000.
00:18:40
Marley
Yes, or I was born.
00:18:40
James Rigby
No idea. England captain, what position?
00:18:42
Marley
John Terry, centre back.
00:18:44
James Rigby
John Terry.
00:18:44
Marley
John Terry.
00:18:45
James Rigby
Wow. I do remember that now.
00:18:49
Marley
Raised six games for us in the year 2000 on loan, thanked us, I believe, upon retirement, saying that he would never have made it at Chelsea without his loan spell with us.
00:18:50
James Rigby
um but
00:18:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
and Do you remember who his central defensive partner was? What would you guess who it might have been in 2000? Someone else relatively well-known in the forest story.
00:19:05
Marley
when they Given it was I'm going to have a guess at Des Walker, but i obviously it wasn't alive.
00:19:12
James Rigby
but
00:19:14
Marley
so
00:19:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
i that
00:19:15
James Rigby
No.
00:19:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Colin Coldewood.
00:19:18
James Rigby
Oh.
00:19:19
Marley
Ah, cold water.
00:19:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
So our future future manager, when his I think he was also a one-season wonder as a player.
00:19:21
James Rigby
like
00:19:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
But when, yeah, when Coldwood was back as a manager, when he was first announced, the picture they always used was with him and John Terry together in the, in the forest shirt, just to show, yeah, he's a club legend.
00:19:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
He played with icons like John Terry, even though, of course, as you said, Marley, it was just a one or two month load spell for for Terry at at Forest.
00:19:43
James Rigby
like promotion winning manager.
00:19:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, there's are we've been always, thank Coldwood. I know we didn't last much longer upon promotion, but then again, neither did Cooper. He had got certain managers for certain tasks. Calderwood was a League One promotion specialist. I think he'd done it with north Northampton. He went on to do it as an assistant at Blackpool. So he got us into, out of league after the depths of League One, kept us in the championship a bit. And then the upgrade, Billy Davis came in and we suddenly became um chasing for playoffs.
00:20:14
Marley
Thank you.
00:20:16
James Rigby
Cool. Well, should we have that final advert and then go on to the beast himself, which is Mick Alantonio?
00:20:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Let's go for it.
00:20:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, so the inspiration for for this episode as a true one season wonder, I think Oliver Burke and Ian Wright, and that's not Olivera, they burned brightly briefly, but Antonio just had an an incredible

Mikkel Antonio's Impact at Nottingham Forest

00:20:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
season.
00:20:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
So in just one year at Forest from the wing, he got 19 goals.
00:21:00
James Rigby
Hmm.
00:21:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
And on his day, he was truly unplayable. It's one of his last appearances for for the for the team. So his main season was 14-15. They left on deadline day, end of August 2015. So we had the first few games of the 15-16 season on. And Forrest had Walsall in the Carabao Cup first round. And he was so good. He only came on for the last 10 minutes. He was so good against Walsall. And I hope this gets kept up for Zencaster. Mikkel Antonio was better for Forrest that day than Ronaldo and Messi were for their teams.
00:21:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
because in terms of the cloud difference in quality between Antonio and every other forest player was a greater goal than Ronaldo, the next best Madrid player and Messi, the next best Barcelona player. He made it look so easy. ah You could tell that it it was going to be his last game for the club. He could just walk through defenses, he had pace, he had power and he had an eye for goal.
00:21:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if it's some blogger has stayed fit in that Stuart Pierce year, then we could have could have got up and it appears we've got sex.
00:22:10
James Rigby
Yeah, no, I think Antonio, because I remember I always take pride in the fact that he'd come from Sheffield Wednesday and his career was in the doldrums and he came to Forrest a bit like Jed Spence did, you know, and absolutely tore it up and went on, not quite like Jed Spence, but went on to bigger and better things and has since done so.
00:22:11
Marley
And.
00:22:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:22:35
James Rigby
Unfortunately, the news broke the other day that he was involved in a car accident. When i first saw the um photo of the car, his Porsche, which was just cutting half.
00:22:46
James Rigby
Um, I thought it was like, I thought as he said something on a podcast and this is some funny meme, like, you know, yeah, yeah, something like that.
00:22:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
a car crash interview or something, yeah.
00:22:55
James Rigby
So I started searching for it because nothing was coming out on talk sport or BBC. You know, the, the notifications weren't coming up on the phone, but West Ham United central on Facebook seemed to have the photo and had broken it before the club and everyone.
00:23:10
James Rigby
But yeah, it was true, unfortunately. And the club um put out a statement yeah saying that it was correct and that he'd been taken to hospital.
00:23:13
Marley
Yeah, that was a
00:23:21
James Rigby
And then later said that he'd had surgery on a lower limb fracture, which I'm assuming is ah a broken leg. ah But it's a tough one, isn't it? Because is it a...
00:23:34
James Rigby
He got really lucky and it's just like a, it was a precaution. He was taken away in the helicopter, um, ambulance and it's just a broken ankle. He'd be back like Danny loaded, um, you know, six to eight weeks. He'll get back before the end of the season or is it a career ender? Um, yeah, it's a sad one, but yeah, he was absolutely fantastic.
00:23:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I think this isn't isn't his first car crash. Didn't he once a few years ago, dressed as a snowman, crash into his neighbor's car, neighbor's house or something very obscure.
00:24:03
James Rigby
Yeah.
00:24:06
James Rigby
Yeah.
00:24:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Can't believe this headline is true type type incident.
00:24:09
James Rigby
Yeah, wrecked.
00:24:12
James Rigby
Yeah, wrecked his Ferrari um that time.
00:24:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it shows he is a character off off the for field.
00:24:16
James Rigby
But.
00:24:17
Marley
Yeah.
00:24:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know that doesn't mean you you have have car crashes, but he is a bit of a personality. I think he is someone who a lot of neutrals in the Premier League still like. And we, as far as fans, don't begrudge him that move.
00:24:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
We still look at him fondly, even though he did force through the the the move to get the league up because we knew he deserved to play somewhere better.
00:24:34
James Rigby
Yeah.
00:24:37
James Rigby
um Yeah.
00:24:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
And his celebrations as Homer Simpson won his Carlton for the French Prince won. He is a character and he's also a fellow podcaster like us hosting a BBC Sounds podcast, Marley.
00:24:50
Marley
I just wanted to share with you the news, which I've just seen, has just popped up from my laptop as breaking. It's that after losing Edu to Maranakis, Arsenal are targeting former United director Dan Ashworth.
00:25:05
James Rigby
That guy, I can't believe what's going on with him. i don I know that's off off topic, but ah all that hoo-ha with Newcastle and Beyond Gardner leaving everything and then he comes into United and they sack him after five months. He mustn't have even sold his mansion in Newcastle yet.
00:25:23
James Rigby
ah
00:25:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
It must have been a long commute by a helicopter, maybe, from Newcastle to Manchester.
00:25:24
Marley
I think he left United actually because I think he left Manchester United because he was unhappy with them not listening to him. In other words, he wanted Gareth Southgate as manager and they wouldn't listen.
00:25:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was sacked, full-on sacked.
00:25:39
James Rigby
Wow.
00:25:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Your out mate, I don't think there's any, yeah, much choice in and the issue. Maybe he was sacked for suggesting our Southgate, but from what I've heard, it definitely wasn't his choice to go.
00:25:51
Marley
Maybe it was a bit of a loose United
00:25:51
James Rigby
well.
00:25:54
Marley
Luther Forest, if that's it, I'm gone. Bye bye.
00:25:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
honey
00:25:58
James Rigby
Yeah. Well back to back to Antonio I had a a point to make I think Antonio is one of the first ones that started to popularize the whole getting a hedge type of deal I don't remember him being so bulky when he was a forest he was a big lad and strong.
00:26:04
Marley
and
00:26:16
James Rigby
But over the next couple of seasons at West Ham, he just seemed to take on this sort of He-Man shape. And then you've got other players coming through behind him, but they were a little bit like that, like Torrey.
00:26:28
James Rigby
Is it Torrey? The fast guy at Wolves who wears baby eyes.
00:26:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, I don't know, try it right now.
00:26:34
James Rigby
Sorry, not well. ah But some some others are trying to think now ah but it did it just seem to become a thing like to just go all um san antonio prison hedge on the premier league defenses so please don't worry that over the the years and his injury problems but whatever is that you cannot imagine him get pushed off the ball and one on one at all.
00:27:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah I think he just shows his his work ethic because he's although he now last the last two years he's worn the number nine shirt at West Ham. ah If he was a winger at Forest and initially at West Ham he was a wing back or even a full back before finally finding his place as a striker.
00:27:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
We talked about Chris Wood being Burnley and Forest's all-time record Premier League scorer and Antonio's West Ham's all-time record Premier League scorer which just shows that he's got the longevity, he's got the work ethic, he's got the power, the pace and he's a great team player.
00:27:24
James Rigby
I mean.
00:27:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Marley, what's your thoughts?
00:27:32
Marley
I would like to use Michael Antonio to highlight just how far we've come as a football team because when we first sold Antonio, we would have said there is not one centre back at our team who could beat him in a one-on-one situation. Last season, West Ham visited the city ground. He was one-on-one with Marillo and Marillo stopped him. Very easily, might I add. So I think just shows how far we've come. As a team, then not only is our striker outperforming him at the minute,
00:27:58
Marley
but also our centre back is more than capable of going up against him and beating him in that 1-1 battle.
00:28:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, we wi switch January, sorry.
00:28:05
James Rigby
Can.
00:28:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Will we link with him January 24 or January 23? Because apparently he did really want to come back. But now, obviously he's just had a hard car crash, but even if he was fit, we don't need him back now. As Marley says, we have yeah found outgrown him.
00:28:20
James Rigby
Yeah i know just speaking quickly about marillo i'm from the game that we don't like to mention the three no loss to man city how amazing was it really was stood on the halfway line.
00:28:32
James Rigby
And the ball was coming towards him. Harlan was running after it. I think Harlan had it at his feet. And if Harlan went past him, he was almost in. And Rilo just kind of stuck his foot out. The ball stopped because he put his foot on the ball.
00:28:45
James Rigby
Then Harlan went tumbling past him. Rilo just carried on. And I was just like, amazing.
00:28:51
Marley
We spent about two minutes singing his song.
00:28:51
James Rigby
That's got to be a clip of the season.
00:28:54
Marley
We spent about two minutes after that singing.
00:28:55
James Rigby
Yeah.
00:28:55
Marley
His name's Marilla. He plays in red and got one in mind, but I think that might have been the West Ham one for him.
00:29:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
Does it end on a chant? Can any of you guys remember that Michael Antonio chants?
00:29:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
So it's to the tune of Red Balloons. Oh, Michael Antonio is quick and and strong, you know. Is that the one you guys know? What what what were you thinking of Molly?
00:29:25
Marley
um just figure antonio and soia and sony yeah and sony ah I Antonio. That's all I could think of.
00:29:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
and That's just his name. Ours is better. Ours had a bit of tune to it. So James, to finish us off, we've talked about Michael Antonio, Nelson Olivera, Oliver Burke, John Terry, Colin Coldwood, Ian Wright, Jed Spence, briefly, any other one-hit wonders you can remember for Forrest, good or bad, before we end.
00:29:52
James Rigby
I'm going to go with ah possibly good or bad. It's the one that that comes back to us every time.

Famous Short-Stint Players at Nottingham

00:30:00
James Rigby
and The guy we mentioned that when we first started doing this podcast.
00:30:04
James Rigby
ah How do you say his name?
00:30:07
Marley
graphic
00:30:08
James Rigby
Debajour. um
00:30:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I see even before my turn.
00:30:10
Marley
table.
00:30:10
James Rigby
ah shebo Yes, you know, he has to be. I wonder at how bad he was. One goal. and We were all all deceived by him. Actually, no, no, I'm not even going to do him. I'm going to go even further back. And I don't know how long he was with us, but Andrei Silenzi. I remember having Andrei Silenzi little bobblehead and he came to us and he scored like 17 goals or something.
00:30:42
James Rigby
thought he was amazing. I think he might have done two seasons and and he had one amazing season. The next season he was rubbish and he's never been any good anywhere else ever again.
00:30:53
James Rigby
ah And like it like you look at his stats and in one season for us, he had better stats than like the rest of his season. Andres Salenzi. One cap for Italy off the back of his performance at Forest.
00:31:03
Marley
i have I have got two I would like to mention. ah One, well, both of them bad really, but one of them i I have a weird obsession with.
00:31:14
Marley
I like him a lot for some reason. The one that I like a lot, I have a weird obsession with is a Barry Mackay.
00:31:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Ooh, okay.
00:31:23
Marley
He only paid for us in the 17, 18 seasons, have to squeeze him in. And the other one who is in here for all the wrong reasons being the laziest player I've ever seen put on a forest shirt is Luke Freeman.
00:31:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, I think Barry Mackay was okay.
00:31:36
James Rigby
Oh.
00:31:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
He was young at least, and I think we could sort him through a small profit via Luke Freeman. He's as bad as Harry Arter of those 2021 intakes, the Houston COVID year.
00:31:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I think we've got to
00:31:48
James Rigby
Yeah.
00:31:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
and and on a dour note by who's had to mention the Hughton word, had to mention the Arthur word. So this year is all up. I'm going to go for a happier one season wonder.
00:31:58
Marley

of Brazil International, don't think he won a cap in the season at Forest, but he eventually went on to, he's now in Saudi, but he loved Forest so much, he was in tears as he helped us to stay at that first Premier League year.
00:32:01
