The Tritone - Devil's Interval

00:00:50
Speaker
Now for our fun fact of the day.
00:00:52
Speaker
In music, have you ever heard of tritone, also known as the devil's interval? Well, it sounds like something that would be on Satan's workout playlist. It probably is.
00:01:05
Speaker
So without going into the technical definition of it, it's basically a specific combination of notes that sound very unsettling. Apparently, in medieval times, they discouraged the sound from being used in church music because it sounded evil.
00:01:19
Speaker
They called it the devil in the music.

Tritone in Pop Culture

00:01:22
Speaker
All right, so what does it sound like? Apparently it's in a lot of things. It's in The Simpsons theme song. It's in a lot of musical scores from horror movies like The Shining and Jaws.
00:01:34
Speaker
And it's all over Toxic by Britney Spears. Okay, that would explain why it gives me anxiety when I listen to that song, but I love it. Yes, I love that song too.
00:01:45
Speaker
And we'll get to a question about that song in a minute. But anyway, most of all, I think it's in metal music, which makes sense. It's intentionally supposed to make you feel unsettled and uneasy.

This or That - Creepy Songs

00:01:56
Speaker
All right, let's move on to a quick round of This or That based on today's theme.
00:02:04
Speaker
This or That. Creepy songs. creep by TLC or creep by radio head. Ooh, I feel like a lot of people do it like covers of radio head, but I really like creep by TLC.
00:02:21
Speaker
i know that is a really good song. That was on my playlist a lot back in the day. Early 2000s. Yes. I think I'd have to go with Creep by Radiohead because i know we were talking about in a previous episode, I love the Book of Life and the main character does a cover of that song. See?
00:02:42
Speaker
so many people do covers. If I could choose that one, i would choose that one. Okay. This or that. Songs from Wicked. Popular or defying gravity?
00:02:54
Speaker
i I think I'd have to pick popular because if I'm singing them, that's probably more in my vocal range than Defying Gravity. i can't do that note at the end there. Powerhouse.
00:03:07
Speaker
Yeah. What about you? i think I like popular better too. They're both great songs. Interesting. Okay. I mean โ€“ Gosh, I really, I mean, Cynthia Erivo singing Defying Gravity, I'd rather hear her sing that.
00:03:19
Speaker
I don't think anybody wants to hear me sing either one, but that's okay. I'll sing by
