Year Without a Summer: 1816

00:00:58
Speaker
Time for our fun fact of the day. Today we're talking about the year without a summer. Kind of sounds like an apocalyptic movie, but this was actually an event from history.
00:01:09
Speaker
The year was 1816, so this is one of the most bizarre climate events in modern history. In April of 1815, Mount Tambora in Indonesia erupted.
00:01:21
Speaker
It was the largest volcanic eruption in 1300 years. It ejected so much volcanic ash into the atmosphere, it limited sunlight across the world for two years.
00:01:33
Speaker
So fast forward 1816, New England and parts of Europe had frost in June, July, and August. Crops failed across the Northern Hemisphere, which led to famine and poverty.
00:01:46
Speaker
But there were some interesting cultural outcomes, too. We've talked on this show before about how Mary Shelley started writing Frankenstein during a summer trip to Switzerland with her husband and friends.
00:01:58
Speaker
And guess which year that was? It was 1816. The bad weather forced Mary Shelley and her friends to stay indoors. To pass the time, they had a competition to write the best horror story, and that's how Frankenstein was born.
00:02:13
Speaker
It's also thought that the bicycle was invented because of this time as well. There was a shortage of oats to feed horses. People needed an alternative to horses for transportation, so German inventor Karl von Drays came up with the early version of the bicycle.
00:02:31
Speaker
It's also said that the sunsets were beautiful during this time because the volcanic ash in the atmosphere made them bright red and orange.

This or That: Ice Cream and Cool Songs

00:02:40
Speaker
All right, let's jump into a quick round of This or That based on today's theme.
00:02:47
Speaker
This or That. Ben and Jerry's ice cream flavors named after musicians. Cherry Garcia or One Love. And Cherry Garcia is cherry ice cream with cherries and chocolate chunks.
00:03:02
Speaker
And One Love is banana ice cream with caramel, graham cracker, swirls, and chocolate peace signs. I would choose Cherry Garcia all the way. Okay. I mean, that's a classic.
00:03:14
Speaker
Yeah. like I mean, you get one cherry on a hot fudge sundae. It always wants you one wanting more. so That's a good point. I just think cherry and chocolate is like the best food combination. I agree. Flavor combination. Yeah.
00:03:27
Speaker
I'm probably really strange because there are a lot of fruit that I don't understand the combination of fruit and chocolate, but banana and cherry are like the two best combinations with chocolate in my opinion.
00:03:39
Speaker
But I don't know. I think I would have to go with One Love. No offense to the Grateful Dead, but i do prefer Bob Marley's music over Grateful Dead music.
00:03:50
Speaker
All right. This or that. Chili songs, Cool by the Jonas Brothers or Cool by Gwen Stefani. I love both of those songs. And I know Cool by the Jonas Brothers is kind of making a comeback because...
00:04:04
Speaker
Everyone's saying it sounds like the life of a showgirl by Taylor Swift. um But I think I'd have to go with Cool by Gwen Stefani. I think I have to agree with you. They're both really good songs.
00:04:14
Speaker
but They are. But there's something about Gwen Stefani's voice that I love in that song. All right. Let's get into our trivia questions on all things cold. All right. Let's go.

Ski Slope Symbols and Personal Story

00:11:51
Speaker
Before we go, let's give you the answer to our opening question.
00:11:55
Speaker
Did you find the connection between a bunny, a black diamond, and a blue square? The answer is they're all symbols associated with ski slopes.
00:12:06
Speaker
Beginners usually start on the bunny slope, the black diamond is a more challenging slope, and the blue square represents an intermediate slope. And for those of you who don't ski, there's also the green circle, which is for easy trails, and the double black diamond, which is for an extra challenge.
00:12:24
Speaker
We've had experience with that before. We do. We got stuck on a double black diamond once. Didn't mean to go there. Yeah. How did we end up there? Do we remember? It was an accident for sure. Wrong turn. It really was.
00:12:36
Speaker
It was very bumpy, very icy, and we ended up sliding down the whole way. Yep. And we survived. We learned our lesson. It made us better skiers, that's sure. And pay attention to directions.
00:12:50
Speaker
Yeah.
