Death Valley and the Sailing Stones

00:00:57
Speaker
Now for our fun fact of the day. Let's talk about the hottest place in the U.S. Do you know where it is? It's Death Valley. It holds the record for the hottest recorded air temperature on Earth.
00:01:12
Speaker
On July 10, 1913, the temperature at Furnace Creek in Death Valley reached 134.1 degrees Fahrenheit. that sounds like hell I don't want to be there during that.
00:01:27
Speaker
Okay. So Death Valley is not only famous for its extreme weather, but also for a mystery that puzzled scientists for a while. Have you heard of the Sailing Stones? For those who haven't heard of this, there are these rocks in Death Valley's racetrack playa that appear to move across the desert floor all by themselves, leaving long trails behind them.
00:01:50
Speaker
For decades, scientists were completely stumped by how these heavy rocks, some weighing up to 700 pounds, could possibly be moving on their own. People came up with all sorts of theories, everything from powerful winds to magnetic forces to my favorite theory for everything, aliens.
00:02:09
Speaker
Of course you'd say aliens. ah But in 2014, researchers finally solved the mystery. It turns out that during winter, when the playa occasionally fills with water, thin sheets of ice form at night.
00:02:23
Speaker
When the sun comes up and the ice begins to melt and break apart, Light winds can push these ice sheets, and the rocks embedded in them, across the muddy bottom of the playa. And it's kind of crazy the answer is ice, because Death Valley is known for being hot and dry most of the year, so that's interesting.
00:02:42
Speaker
Yes, nature is full of surprises.

This or That Game: Hot Dog Eating Contest vs. Hot Ones

00:02:45
Speaker
All right, let's move on to a quick round of This or That based on today's theme.
00:02:52
Speaker
All right. This or that. Would you rather compete in the national hot dog eating contest or participate in an episode of Hot Ones? Okay. There's a clear winner for me here.
00:03:05
Speaker
I would bring my Flo's Relish and i would head over to the hot hotd dog eating contest. Okay. You're blowing my mind right now because I had a clear answer, but now that you say that, the Flo's Relish, which if anyone doesn't know what we're talking about, it's the most famous hot dog place in southern Maine.
00:03:25
Speaker
And if you ever go to Maine, you have to to go have the hot dogs there. But Flo's has the best relish. And I don't know if it's the celery salt that does it for me, but those are so good.
00:03:39
Speaker
Yeah, they have the house special with the mayo and celery salt with their Flo's Relish. So- That would be my secret weapon. Okay. I think the record is 73 hot dogs, which, I mean, Flo's hot dogs are good, but I don't know if I could do that many them. You've never eaten Flo's hot dogs in Lost Count because I have.
00:03:59
Speaker
it I don't know. I think I would still have to choose hot ones, though, because I prefer buffalo wings over hot dogs. Yeah. But I'd probably be like Jennifer Lawrence and be crying. and like
00:04:14
Speaker
Okay. This or that. Disco songs. Would you choose Hot Stuff by Donna Summer or Disco Inferno by The Tramps? I think I'd have to go with Disco Inferno.
00:04:26
Speaker
There's something about the burn, baby, burn. I like that line. Okay. Well, I realize this might make me sound like a hardcore gambler. There is a slot machine in many casinos named Hot Stuff Wicked Wheel.
00:04:39
Speaker
And I do not have the best luck on slot machines, but for some reason, this one, I have the best luck. And they play the song Hot Stuff by Donna Summer. So that song, special place in my heart.
00:04:52
Speaker
Okay. See, i never do I've never done well on slots, so I just have kind of given up on them. I think I've done the Titanic one and the Wheel of Fortune one, but never done the hot stuff one. You should try the Wicked Wheel.
00:05:09
Speaker
You have very good answers for both of these. Let's get into our 10 hot-themed trivia questions.

00:13:02
Speaker
Before we go, let's give you the answer to our opening question.
00:13:05
Speaker
Did you find the connection between wood, bridges, and calories? The answer is they're all things you can burn. And hey, we used to burn CDs in the 2000s, so we could have added that on here too.
00:13:19
Speaker
I actually have a storage box full of burned CDs and I need to get a CD player so I can remember what's on them. oh my gosh. I wish I still had mine. I don't know where any of mine went. so I probably have yours.
00:13:30
Speaker
It's probably a combination of mine and yours, but I'll have to, mean, who has a CD player anymore? I need to get one. It's like who has a VHS player. Like you have all those VHS tapes too.
