First Thanksgiving Feast: What Was Served?

00:00:53
Speaker
Now for our fun fact of the day. Let's talk about what was actually served at the very first Thanksgiving feast in 1621.
00:01:02
Speaker
While we pictured Turkey as the centerpiece today, Historians aren't sure turkey was even present. What we do know for sure is that venison was definitely on the menu.
00:01:13
Speaker
And forget about mashed potatoes, potatoes hadn't even made their way to North America yet. Instead, the pilgrims and Wampanoag enjoyed a variety of seafood, including lobsters, clams, and mussels.
00:01:25
Speaker
That sounds like my kind of Thanksgiving. Anyway. I know. i kind of like the idea. we don't usually have some food for Thanksgiving. I'd love to add a little shellfish in there.
00:01:37
Speaker
And corn was definitely present, but as cornmeal for bread and porridge, not the corn on the cob we might imagine. And all those Thanksgiving desserts we love, There was none of that.
00:01:50
Speaker
There was no pumpkin pie because they lacked butter and wheat flour to make crusts. They probably just roasted or stewed their pumpkins instead.

Pecan Pie vs. Pumpkin Pie: Personal Preferences

00:01:58
Speaker
All right, let's move on to a quick round of this or that based on today's theme.
00:02:04
Speaker
This or that. Pecan pie or pumpkin pie? i have never been a fan of pecan pie so I have to go with pumpkin pie. That is my absolute favorite Thanksgiving dessert. What about you? mean, it is a classic.
00:02:19
Speaker
I'm a Southern girl now, but even before that, i loved pecan pie. i don't know if it's just like the texture of the toasty nuts on top. I don't know. The pumpkin pie can be a little too mushy for me. i keep trying to say pecan like you. It's just how we say it in the South, you know? okay. All right. Well, when you move back up here, you got to say pecan again. Okay. This or

Stuffing vs. Mashed Potatoes: Best Side Dish Debate

00:02:43
Speaker
that.
00:02:43
Speaker
Best side, stuffing or mashed potatoes? Okay. I will say our mom makes the best of both of these. She does.
00:02:54
Speaker
She makes the best mashed potatoes. Something about the spices that she puts in there, like the garlic and the onion powder or something. I don't know. So good. And she doesn't mash them all the way. and i just think that makes it. Yeah.
00:03:05
Speaker
And it's very buttery. So good. But she also makes those stuffing balls. And that's not like a childhood thing. Like I feel like she recently started making those. But her stuffing balls, oh my god, so gooey on the inside, but then like kind of crispy on the outside. Yeah.
00:03:21
Speaker
I think I got to go with stuffing. I love stuffing. I got to with stuffing too. I love those stuffing balls. Yeah. Stuffing. We agree on that. We're goingnna make a double batch of that Thanksgiving. Okay.
