Oomancy and Witch Trials

00:01:20
Speaker
Let's talk about a fortune-telling practice called oomancy. It's an ancient form of divination where people would drop egg whites into hot water to reveal the future from whatever shapes formed.
00:01:32
Speaker
Young women especially loved this trick to predict who their future husbands would be. For example, if the egg whites formed the shape of a horse, they might marry a farmer. and the shape of a boat might suggest they'd marry a fisherman.
00:01:47
Speaker
Which all sounds fun, but here's where it gets a little dark. Nine-year-old Elizabeth Paris and 11-year-old Abigail Williams, who were the first to accuse someone of witchcraft during the Salem witch trials, reportedly practiced oomancy before their strange behavior began.
00:02:05
Speaker
One of them allegedly saw the shape of a coffin form in the egg, which would have been an ominous sign. Soon they started acting strange, barking like dogs, and their bodies contorting unnaturally.
00:02:18
Speaker
They accused Elizabeth Paris's servant, Tituba, of teaching them this witchy ritual, which set the witch hunt in motion. I mean, I remember playing light as a feather, stiff as a board at sleepovers when we were younger, but I can't imagine freaking ourselves out so much that we start accusing people of witchcraft. I know, right?
00:02:38
Speaker
And I've seen things in my food before. i guess a coffin would freak me out, but probably shouldn't read too much into those things. No, we've definitely learned our lesson after a few centuries.
00:02:48
Speaker
Yes. All right, let's move on to a quick round of this or that based on today's theme.

Witch-themed 'This or That' Game

00:02:58
Speaker
This or that. If you were a witch, which one would you rather have as your familiar? a black cat or a raven? Ooh, that's a tough one. I think I have to go with Raven.
00:03:12
Speaker
I used to think they were bad luck and kind of ominous, but i think they're actually a good sign. So I think I'd have to choose that. I mean, that's what Maleficent had. She had Diablo the Raven.
00:03:24
Speaker
think it would be just like her. Yes. ah And nice we good I think I'd have to choose a black cat, even though I am allergic to cats. But I just think there's something very, like, mysterious and magical about them. and Yeah.
00:03:37
Speaker
Yeah, I'd have to choose a black cat. Okay, this or that. Spooky season theme song. I put a spell on you or season of the witch. Oh, those are both really good. And every time I think of...
00:03:51
Speaker
I put a spell on you. I think of Hocus Pocus, which I love that movie. Me too. The Halloween party scene. Yes. But I think I'd have to go with Season of the Witch right now. I feel like that's a good festive song.
00:04:03
Speaker
Yeah. I agree with you. I would choose Season of the Witch, especially Lana Del Rey's version. That's my favorite. It's the best. All right.
